Speaker 1 (00:06):
You ANDDI Soccer will take on the Montana Griz a
little later this season in non conference play, but they
busied themselves in the recent week taking on one of
the top programs that has ever existed in women's collegiate soccer.
This is just their most recent edition that expects to
be in the mix for another national title. Head coach
Chris Logan joins the program from you indie women's soccer everybody,
(00:28):
So let me ask you an experience like that. You know,
sometimes the players will look around and look at the
facility and say wow. And then but the coach will
look around and say, boy, look at some of the
players that we're playing against right now, and you'll say wow.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
So give me your rundown. What was that experience?
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Like?
Speaker 2 (00:47):
I mean, you guys, maybe.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
The early goal maybe would say you have to change
up your your formula going up against North Carolina, but
you stayed in it, and I think that can I
think that was a guys were resolute and kind of
deciding how you wanted to play that game.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Correct.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
Yeah, I think that if we'd come out and gone
at them, it could have gone a little bit uglier.
The other problem with it was getting the ball off them.
To do that, that was the most incredible team I've
ever seen, you know, the number two in the Yeah,
and I've never seen anything like it, you know, And
hats off to our team because we dug in and survived.
(01:25):
I mean, two of the three goals were off set plays,
one was a corner kick, one was a penalty, so
one only one of the goals came in actually were
live play. And you know, the last ten minutes we
opened up a bit and tried to have a go
and see what we can get one back, but it
was just so hard getting the ball off them. But
as an experience for our team to play against somebody
who will genuinely be competing to win the national championship
(01:46):
this year, it was cool that we hung around with them.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Does that the ability to play as cohesively as a
defensive unit in that scenario where you know you're going
to just face pressure constantly, you're trying to get clearances,
you're just trying to get possession momentarily to disrupt, to
get a leg in, to disrupt that. That isn't necessarily
the way I know that you enjoy your soccer and
(02:12):
the way that you want to see a team play,
but it may serve you well to know that you
are fairly resolute in the ability to defend effectively through
a period of a game, which might come in handy
at points.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
This season, I think we had to And you know,
the funny thing is we were We knew we'd have
to defend a little bit deeper, but ten minutes in
we were almost on top of our own goal box.
Not by them because we couldn't get the ball off them.
But what we did is we dug in and we
were We gave our best effort, and we had character,
and we had soul with the way we defended, and
we gave everything we had and defensively, and I think
(02:47):
that we can still do a little bit better with
the ball at times, but generally, I mean, we had
one practice to put this together and yeah, and it
was down and not here. I mean, the heat joined
the game was one hundred and two degrees. It was
the way it felt on the field and.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Humidity and everything was just oppressive.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
Yeah, and I think we went through. I mean, we
got a lot of people in the games. I think
we got through about twenty three twenty four field players,
So you know, we got We've got some good depth
this year, and everyone stepped up to the play and
it was cool just to be in that environment.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
It was.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
It was awesome, and I just wonder how could we
have done if it was, you know, later in the day,
late in the season, when the weather's a bit cooler. Yeah,
because the weather was a factor and you you know,
you've got a little bit more enery because it's cooler
and stuff.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
I would have been interested to see.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Were you impressed with the way your players maybe put
aside the wild factor? You know, I think there's probably
initially that of look where we're playing, look who we're playing.
But in order to do the job appropriately and give
yourself at least a fighting chance in that game, you
got to set that aside as a student athlete and
(03:49):
just get into the battle. And I'm assuming you're feeling
like your players did that for the most part.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
YEA. Our team are willing to sacrifice for each other.
That's something that's great this year.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
We have great team chemistry and they sacrifice want to
And I think the most impressive aspect of this was
probably the fact that Grace Miller, a freshman.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Was in goal and she was she had to come.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Off late in the game. She got a little bit
of a knock and she walked past the Carolina bench.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
They applauded her. That's a freshman in goal.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
How cool is that?
Speaker 4 (04:16):
It was unreal. She was absolutely fantastic. And then Sid
Bauritis went in, and I keep telling Sid, she's the
first goalkeeper in the country to shut North Carolina out
because she had a minute in forty one seconds of
playing time she can get scored on, So she's technically
the best goalie against North Carolina the country.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
So good job.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Said, there you go, Sid, way to go. That's awesome.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
So you turn around and knowing what you were facing
in the heat, in humidity, and you're only going to
get more of it in your other game down in Charleston,
South Carolina against the College of the Charleston. You fell
to nil in that game to wrap up the road trip.
Also a very solid program. What did you think in
the response the second game on that road trip.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
I think it was hard, but I feel like we
had a physical mental hangover from the first game. I
think it was so draining on us because Charleston's quality,
I mean the five and one there were quality team,
but you know, the first half, I felt as though
we could have performed better. The second half was pretty even.
We missed a really good chance right before they got
the second goal. You know, they're a good team in
(05:18):
good form. But that was the one that we would
love to have back because I feel as though, again
it was really hot and you could tell that they
were more used to that heat. But still both teams
have to play in those temperatures. So I just think
that our team was just not as mentally maybe ready
as we needed to be for that one. That's when
I wish we could have back.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
The one interesting thing is is that, you know, it's
how you can kind of string together a weekend. It
can be awfully hard, especially two great opponents like that.
But yeah, maybe had that just that uneven first half
of that match, and it kind of it makes it
a little tougher, kind of like you're going uphill at
that juncture basically against a team of that caliber. But
how did you make out injury wise? I mean it
(06:01):
we kind of had taken some bumps and bruises early
in the season. How's your team doing after a couple
of parts.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
And I think that's something that really hurts us Sunday too.
Is our depth in a lot of positions. We are
a little bit down right now with some injuries. Nothing's
we had one in the first game of the season,
which was a pretty major one end of the season,
but the most of them are going to be ones
that we're going to recover from. But right now we're
probably in a little bit of a waiting game. I
would say by conference we're going to be fine. I
think the next two weeks, you know, we're going to
(06:27):
be a little bit thinner. But the fortunate thing is
that the players that we do have available, we are
a lot deeper this year. And that's I mean, you know, again,
playing North Carolina and playing twenty three twenty four field
players was pretty good. So unfortunate timing with some of
the injuries, but these things happen. That's why you have
a squad. And I think we'll you know, we'll be
bound this week against a good Idaho State team and
(06:47):
hopefully we were ready.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Well, you weren't able to find the back of the
goal on this road trip, playing very good competition. However,
Bronson Field, well you've been with the ball. You've scored
nineteen times, so far at home this season. Now, obviously
your teams, like they do, they play more confident. Oftentimes,
(07:09):
playing confident, you're more clinical, and you're finishing hopefully just
the comfy confines. Basically, the return back to Bronson Field
maybe play a role in your offensive side and the
offensive game going against Idaho State.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
I would hope.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
So, I mean, being comfortable on our home field and
confident on our home field's important. And we try to
direct the team today to we've got to get back
to being who we were. You know, North Carolina we
had the effort that we normally have, but stylistically we
were different.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Charleston.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
We had an off day, you know, I would say,
and we're trying to redirect. We've got to be the
best version of ourselves that we have been up until
maybe the Charleston game terms of our best effort and focus,
and if we do.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
You know, Ida Hostate's a good team.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
You know, they're very good defensively, but we look at
ourselves as we have to be the aggressive on Friday
and go after them and again get back on track
with being who we truly are.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
So certainly you are a team that certainly has a
really emerging for the last couple of years. And Amy Leffler,
who puts you know, definitely draws attention from other teams
her ability to score and do things in front of
goal at the same time as you merge into your
(08:17):
offensive things. And I know it was more stunted this weekend,
especially when you're playing North Carolina.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
But when you're really going, are you using your.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Flanks because you feel like you can get at teams
with the paciness. Are you trying to work through the
middle where you have some very clever, creative players.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Where do you.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Feel like the strength of your team as you're starting
to work your way through the first third of the season.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
Yeah, I mean, I'd say that the biggest thing that's
strength of our team on both sides, but is our
work rate and our effort and our ability to win
individual battles on both sides of the ball. I would
say generally when we attack, we usually go down the
sides with the idea of getting the boat down the
side so we can get it into the box. And
that's where Amy's really dangerous. Kaylee Fowl has had a
strong start to the year as well, and she stepped
(08:59):
in with some good goal and we still feel there's
more to come in. I think that Morgan Huff is
somebody that as time goes on, you'll see she's a
very good player and it's hard as a freshman to
have all this weight on your shoulders. She's a very creative,
very fun player to watch, and I think that she's
somebody that's going to continue to evolve and provide a
lot of dangerous opportunities for us. In addition to Samdads
(09:20):
is a fifth year. She can play through the middle,
she can play wide, Caroline Coon, She's a really explosive,
dynamic wide player as well. How to move back a
little bit because of all the injuries we've got right now?
Sure with Caroline's back in a more offensive role, I
think it will help. And say with Brinn Belcher whence
she's back, she's a pretty good attacking player too. And
I'm missing a couple of people here, But yeah, we
were generally trying to get down the side and generate
(09:42):
a ton of offense and it's worked at home so far.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
How are your back four or players are so And
the reliability I know back there, you've got you know
a Mary Gasaway who's been a part of things for
a long time. That's pretty reliable, even though I think
if you put her up on top, she just as
reliable if you put her in the offensive side of things.
That's how good a player she is. And then you
got players like the Chedders who are playing in front
(10:07):
of them. But does does that give you some ability
to feel strong and spine wise your team in front
of Grace, to feel like you're gonna limit the quality
chances as games go on?
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (10:18):
Absolutely, I mean Chetter can play almost anywhere, and she'll
give you ten out of ten in work, right. You know,
she played in the back against North Carolina because she
had to, and then in the midfield she just does
so much running it's actually putting incredible. And yeah, maybe
Mary's a phenomenal defender. We actually speaking to which we
did put throw up top for the last ten minutes
on Sunday. Oh she was a handful, man, I mean
she was. She was a handful for them. So you know,
(10:41):
we never rule out Mary maybe taking it being taken
taking a look up top. I mean, obviously Amy was
a back and all of a sudden she's in the top
score in the Summit League.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
How does how does Mary take. Does she kind of
get her to do her eyes go bigger when you
say you get to play up top?
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Does she say this is weird for me? What does
she say when that happens.
Speaker 4 (10:59):
Yeah, it's she's got that look of curiosity in her
eyes of what am I going to be doing?
Speaker 3 (11:02):
Ok?
Speaker 4 (11:03):
Hey, but you know what, she's such an effective play
and such a physical specimen like constrosity that she is
just difficult.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
She's hard to play against, and she's she's a handful
of the same way.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Amy is Well, I tell you what really excited about
a couple of games here at home before you hit
the road again home on Friday afternoon at three against
Idaho State, then next week early against Jamestown before hitting
the road right away. So a couple of big ones
at Bronson Field. Like to see that place packed and roaring,
just like the Alert Center. Let's let's get some chance
(11:37):
going her songs going out there. Let's let's just have
some fun for the ladies and and ramp up a
great home weekend of soccer.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Yeah, there's no tickets left for Bronson, so you know,
just turn up.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Just just turn up and just tell you can even
bring your pet, bring your pet.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
I mean it's a great atmosphere at Bronson I love it.
And the weather looking like perfect soccer weather heading into
the Friday afternoon tilt, so looking forward to that. Coach Logan,
thanks for this and dropping by and filling us in
on kind of how your your last week has been.
It's been a whirlwind you got back late last night,
but another big week ahead here as you continue in
non conference play.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Appreciate this.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
Thank you, Chris Logan, head soccer coach of you and
d women's soccer home weekend ahead here against Idaho State
Friday afternoon at Bronson Field, then next Tuesday against Jamestown.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
When we return, we flipped the script.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
We talk a little bit about you and Di Volleyball
that picked up a nice win, pushed the host team
as well as far as they'd go, got a little
honor for it as well. Here today we'll talk about
that as head coach Jesse Tupac has made his way
in from practice. Undie Volleyball and head coach Jesse Tupac
