Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is Colorado's Morning News.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Marty Lens, Gina Ganda, Good morning, the Denver Nuggets hosting
the Clippers again tonight at Ball Arena, Game two. Of course,
the Nuggets coming off that overtime thriller one twelve, one
ten over the Clippers this past Saturday.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
And joining us now on the KWA Common Spirit Health
Hotline to talk all things Nuggets. Former coach and player
now a reporter for Altitude Sports, It's Bill Handsleck.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Bill, thank you so much for your time.
Speaker 4 (00:19):
As always, Gina, Marty, great catching up. It's a great
time of year NBA playoffs, So nothing better than the
Nuggets winning at home.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Absolutely, And when we look at these two teams and
what we saw with the Nuggets wins so far top
strong suit, what would you say that is for both
the Nuggets and for the Clippers at the moment.
Speaker 4 (00:40):
Well, I think sort of top strong suit. And a
little bit of a surprise for a lot of people
was how good both teams were defensively outside of the
first quarter where the Nuggets were all of shaky. Wow,
they put a defensive clinic on the Clippers and not
able to slowly scratch and claw and get back in
(01:03):
the game and eventually win it in overtime.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
And well and having the Clippers probably fully healthy. We
knew coming in that that was going to be the case.
And you have an elite defender that's back on the
court they didn't have before, and I'm sure that made
a big difference for the Clippers and made it more
difficult on the Nuggets.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
Yeah, I mean, they get Kawhi Leonard back, and I
think he played most of the last thirty seven games
of the season, or maybe had thirty seven total games.
But the Clippers went eighteen and three over the last
twenty one games, including eighth straight, So they were riding
(01:40):
with a lot of confidence, a lot of emotion, and
they came out like game busters, and the Nuggets did
a great job of kind of stemming the tide and
guys stepping up a coach of course, nikolejkicch but Russell
Westbrook an outstanding game, Gordon Jamal Murray who'd only played
(02:03):
Jamal only played a couple of games after coming off
that hamstring problem. So uh wow, it was it was
just a thriller on Saturday afternoons.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Well, last I checked, it looked like the Clippers were
favored to even the series tonight.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Your thoughts on that are your prediction for the game?
Speaker 4 (02:21):
Bill, Well, the game twos, especially when when the home
team wins game one, but game twos of a of
a series, UH are always the toughest to win. Uh.
Changes will be made by both teams. You'll make adjustments
to what it is, but I expect war again. Both
(02:43):
these teams rely heavily on their starters, and their starters
played monster minutes. You know, the Nuggets whole starting lineup
outside of Michael Porter Junior were big, big minutes. So
we'll see if that has an effect on the game.
And the Clippers did the same thing benches. That was
(03:03):
a rarity. By the way, the Nuggets bench actually outscored
the Clippers and that was primarily because of Russell Westbrook.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Bill, what do the Nuggets have to do? What do
they need to clean up as they get into game two?
That you saw is a shortcoming in game one?
Speaker 4 (03:19):
Well, you sure hope they should have loved better from
three point line, but kle Lee, I like what they did.
They're going to have to just David Allen is gonna
did it. By the way, did a great job of
coaching this team, keeping on his emotions under control and
really just doing it. I had a great game plan,
so much of the same. They've got to defend well,
(03:41):
they got to use Joker and when if the Clippers
single them up, Jokers Joker could score better. I mean
he he missed some shots he normally doesn't miss. But
I'll tell you what, when they started doubling, they were
worried about him. Late, he made the passes to the
right people and they made shots. He had twelve assistem
in the game. Eight of those came in the second half.
(04:01):
So I kind of like what they did. I think
you're just gonna have to react in the game to
see what the Clippers attempt to do.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Bill at the minute we have left, and speaking of Joker,
the list is out for the NBA Award finalists.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Again. Joker on the list for MVP.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
But I saw some people on Reddit saying that Christian
Brown was kind of snubbed for the finalists for most
Improved Players. So what's your overall thoughts on what we
see of the finalists so far?
Speaker 4 (04:24):
Oh? Wow, gud, I think it's great. Yeah, Christian Christians
should have been in that thing. I mean, I don't know.
Some of the the national figureheads, I don't know. Sometimes
I got to shake my head. When it comes to MVP.
There are only two that you can consider Shane Joseph
Alexander Okay, see and you understand from his end, I mean,
(04:46):
they had a remarkable season. He had a remarkable scoring season.
But how can you pass up Nikola Jokic his stats?
This seter one of I don't know. It's a three
or four guys in the history of the NBA that
averaged the triple double. There are four big categories. He
was either second or third in points, rebounds, assists. Feels
(05:12):
nobody's ever done that. I mean, it's just it'll be
interesting to see how close that final race is. But
some people have jokers sometimes Alexander, and we'll see what happens.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Denver Nugget legend now reporter and the analysts for Altitude Sports.
For the Nuggets, it's Bill Handslink. Thanks Bill,
