Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hey guys, welcome into the Bonus chapter Saturday edition of
Lisa's Book Club. I'm Lisa Donavan and I'm here with
producer Riley, and we're hanging out in the studio chatting
about books and movies and everything that we.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Like, anything that comes to mind. So I was reading
this book. It's like the fifth book in a series
that I've read multiple times. It's one of my favorite
all time series, and I forgot how much I like
one of the characters. And he's like the main character
of the first three books. I just like want to
put him in my pocket. So when I was reading
this being like, oh my god, I love him so much,
(00:37):
I was wondering, if you have like an all time
favorite like movie or book character that you like, you
either just like for who they are, like relate to,
or anything like that.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Well, I mean, this is going way back, but book
and a movie kind of duo would be the devil
worst protest. So the book was from Lauren Weisberger, and
she based it on her time as a writer for
Vogue magazine. And before I came to radio, I was
in public relations for ten years and I had the
(01:06):
opportunity to work in New York City in the fashion business.
So I was in house pr for Coach, the handbag company,
and I got to see that side of the world,
the fashion world. I wasn't a writer, but I was,
you know, dealing with and meeting with all of the
editorial staff, all kind of people all of the major
magazines back then, and it was really really fun. But
(01:30):
it really gave me good insight into what Lauren had
experienced with Vogue and with Anna Wintour. So just reading
that book, I could totally relate to it. And then
when I saw the movie, it was even better. And
the fact that they're doing a Devil Worst Product too
now and all of the same cast members are coming back,
like Meryl Streep and Hathaway, Emily Blunt, I cannot wait.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
I'm so excited. One of my all time movies. Yeah,
Like I feel like it's on everybody's list. So Meryl
Streep in that movie God Tear, She's just amazing.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
I know, and all of them though, like even Giselle
Bunchen was in it, her little cameo, I know, it
was so cute. I just I cannot wait for this movie,
and I'm so happy that all of the characters are
coming back. And then I do want to mention a
little shout out to the book Wild, and then it
was also made into The Wild was written by Cheryl
strad who has a connection to New England, and the
(02:24):
movie starred Reese Witherspoon. And I remember doing book in
a movie and that character, like I think, as a mom,
I've always been kind of slightly jealous of that character.
Now I know she did it because she was on
a personal journey to get herself back on track again,
because she was having a really really tough time personally
(02:44):
with a lot of different things. But I remember thinking
to myself, God, I really wish I had the time
to go on like a thousand mile hike by myself,
just to sort of center myself. Right. Yeah, And as
a mom, and I know that there are a lot
of moms, you know, out there listening. Just to have
that space to really work on yourself was always something
(03:04):
that I admired. And I really loved that book and
I really loved the movie.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
I feel like my mom would completely relate to that.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
I wonder if she's read that book, you should ask her,
I should, Yeah, she's seen the movie, If she hasn't
read it.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
Now. You mentioned to me this week that you want
me to give you the Charlotte and the God Book
for your mom.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
Oh yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
After she was like because she wanted to go, but
she couldn't make it because it's tax season, and she
was like, maybe like I.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Could borrow the book from Lisa. Oh no, I don't
have to buy it now.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
I'm gonna give it to you. Has all of my
notes in it, I mean, like lots of scribbling. So
hopefully she won't mind that.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
I kind of think she'll find that fun because she'll
be like, oh my god, this is such a good
question by Lisa. Like she's gonna give it back to
me and be like can you let her know that
all her questions were so good?
Speaker 1 (03:43):
But I wonder do you ever do that? Like when
you read a book, do you underline certain sentences or
passages that you really like and you want to go
back to?
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Yeah, so annotating like books. I know obviously it's like
a big thing, but like during COVID, everybody on like
book TikTok or like anitate books, antatate books. I gave
it a try with this one book where I was
like purposely going into it like I'm gonna annotate this book,
and I ended.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Up hating the book because you were.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
I don't I think it was the book, but part
of it was just like it's just has a ton
of underlining and then it just.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
Drops off like a book.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
I subconsciously do it every single time I read a book,
just because I like I I love going back to
certain you know thoughts, yeah, conversations.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
My copy of Beach read by Emily Henry, has a
ton of underline in it because it's I that's one
of the one of my favorite characters, because I related
to her so much.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
I January loved her so much. You're right though. She
has such a funny way about her. I laugh out
loud at some of the things she writes.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Oh my god, I'll be reading her books like twirling
my hair, kicking my feet, giggling.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
To myself, like I just love her writing.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Yeah she's really fair.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
But if you read that one January that that's the
character's name, I felt like I was like, this is me,
so like a lot of her like external dialogue and
internal dialogue, I have like highlighted and underlined because I'm like,
I just like relate to her so much.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
I love that you found that one person.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Yeah, I know, and all of her books are so good.
I have like one other big character that's like one
of my all time favorites, not even because I relate
to her, because she's like a fantasy like main character
Alan Galathinius from Throne of Glass.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
It's by the author that wrote the fairy porn.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Oh that Meil Robins said was reading this.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Throne of Glass is her original. It's like an eight
series book. I mean, hello, eight book series, and it's
one of my favorite, favorite favorite all time series ever.
I think it's better than the other one Acatar, I
think it's way better.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
So are you you have to have the actual book
in hand or can you you know, do audio or kindle?
Speaker 3 (05:50):
I'm both.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
I read a lot on my phone just because it's
like easier. But I have like a bookcase at home
that has like my all time favorite books. If I
read something on my kindle that I like, am like,
I need to have this in paperback, I'll buy it again.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
I don't care.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
Yeah, I'm the same way. I have to have the book.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Yeah, there are some that I feel like if I've
bought it. It almost like gives you a purpose to
read it more if it's just sitting on your phone.
Sometimes I'm like, I'll get to that eventually. But when
you see the book in on your bookshelf or on
your bedside table, you're like, God, I got to get
to that.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
I spent the money.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Yeah, And plus it's like less screen time at least
for me, like when I'm sitting that's true book.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Yeah. I try not to think about reading as screen time,
which I know is probably it's like a justifiable thing
in my brain. But I'll be like, I mean, I'm
on my phone technically, but I'm not like scrolling through
like random crap on the internet. I'm actually like using
my brain and I'm reading. But that's just like a
(06:49):
self justification. So real quick, do you have a book
that you think everyone should read?
Speaker 1 (06:58):
So it's it's kind of a little self healthy, but
it's definitely if you haven't read it. It's called the
Four Agreements, And I know that Tom Brady always talks
about this book because it has things in it like
be impeccable with your word, do not take anything personally.
It's not always about you, do not make assumptions, and
always do your best. I think those four statements are
(07:20):
so powerful and you can really use them like throughout
your entire life.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
And do they give like ways how to implement it
and stuff they do? Okay, yeah, to pick that.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
And it's cute. It comes like in different forms, like
someone actually gave it to me and it looked like
a tiny little like like a pocket a tiny like
a little pocket book. They've got, you know, larger versions,
but it is like a nice book to have in
your house and to just sort of revisit because again
it's like stop taking things so personally. Yeah, everything is
(07:51):
about you, right, and that's like such a big lesson
for a lot of people. And then always do your best.
I know that Tom Brady's definitely talked about this book
a lot.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
As being very and he's so like focused on yes,
he implementing things into his line.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
It's like he lives by these four agreements.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
I have two, but they're a little less helpful than yours.
One is The Song of Achilles. It'll break your heart.
It's like a Greek retelling. It's the most heartbreaking book
I've ever read in my life. I sobbed through the
second half, So if you're into that, it's amazing. The
writing is just amazing. And then the other one is
(08:29):
Thirteen Reasons Why, because that was the book that got
me back into reading in high school, and it's like
the Bullying, the book about bullying, just amazing.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
With Selena Gomez. She directed, directed the show.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
And the show.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
If you've watched the show and didn't read the book,
it kind of go. The first season's pretty accurate, but
the rest of it is not based off the book.
They've just taken ideas from it.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
You know what I can't believe is that I remember
talking about that show on the Morning show. Yeah, and
the fact that you were in high school.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Oh my bad, it's so funny.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
You're like, you're so young and it's so great actually
your mid twenties, and yeah, because it's it's it's awesome.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
I might have been in middle school. I kind of forget.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Yeah, I think I might have been in I might
have been in middle school, eighth grade or so. Yeah,
either way, it doesn't matter. But I just remember reading
it and being like, wow, it is Yeah, and as
like a young kid too, absolutely, but even as an adult,
I still think about it because It is like you
have to think about your words and your actions and
(09:36):
how it affects people and stuff, and I wish more
people would. Yeah, yeah, read the book if you've watched
the show reading it.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
I might give it to one of my kids to read.
Yeah right, absolutely, yeah, I think it would be a
good time for him.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
To read that.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
I was gonna say, he's about the age that I
read it, So yeah, you know what I'm going to
do that, Riley.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
