Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hey, welcome to Lisa's Book Club, a podcast where I
interview best selling authors from the New England area, pulling
back the curtain on what it's really like being a
best selling author. They're guilty pleasures, latest projects, and so
much more. Hey, we had Juliana from Newton, who won
The Bachelor this season, and she came into the studio

(00:24):
live and my son Riley, who you know watches The
Bachelor and calls into the show, actually got to meet
his favorite girl. You don't want to miss this podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
We have a special guest in studio, Juliana from The Bachelor.
Welcome home.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Thank you so much, thanks for letting me come in
and join you today.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
This is pretty cool. Words Grant.

Speaker 4 (00:45):
Grant is actually on his way from la to Boston
as we speak. Ah, coming for another little visit.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Okay, so you'll be meeting him at the airport.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
I'm guessing I sure will.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Oh isn't that romantic? It really is. We have so
many questions. Okay, First of all, congratulations, I heard you're
the first person from Boston to ever win The Bachelor.

Speaker 4 (01:04):
Hey, if you heard it, it's probably true. I think
so there. I haven't watched the show for too long.
But I don't know that I can name off the
top of my head anybody from Boston. It's been on it.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
All of our listeners, all of Boston. We were all
rooting for you since from day one.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Oh absolutely absolutely. Some of them were a little annoying,
but I'm sure they're all wonderful people. So I said,
welcome home. What's it been like like when you come
home from a national show, a really popular show like
The Bachelor? What's it like when you get home to
the neighborhood and such?

Speaker 4 (01:36):
Well, walking my dog has become different. You know, all
my neighbors see me and they'll come out and say, Hi,
just want to know all the tea, all of the
behind the scenes stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
That's funny. We do too.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
Yeah, but it's really like a whirlwind. You know.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
You take a couple of days to just decompress and
get back into you know, your normal headspace, and you
try to just take it day by day honestly.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Now, do you have your own place here or are
you sleeping in your bedroom at your parents' house?

Speaker 3 (02:03):
I have my own apartment in Waltham with my roommate.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, don't give out the addressed god for he that,
but it's.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Been nice and I do. I go.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
It's really close to Newton, so I go to visit
my parents like every day.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
So when you are Grant are out together, do you
constantly get recognized?

Speaker 5 (02:18):
Now?

Speaker 3 (02:19):
Yes, for sure. He's hard to miss.

Speaker 4 (02:22):
So when we're together, it's like people are very excited
to see him, and then I'm kind of like there
with him.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
I'm like, hey, but do.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
You like getting recognized everywhere you go? I guess that's
part of the game, right.

Speaker 4 (02:37):
It's part of the game, for sure. It's taking It
has taken some getting used to. You know, I am
a bit of an awkward person, I think, just like
by nature, I'm kind of shy a bit, so, you know,
but it's been really fun and it's really cool to
see the excitement of people and just kind of feel
like you're connected to them through this weird, strange event.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Now, what are I mean? Obviously we saw your family
at the famous backyard party, yes, which everybody wanted to
be there. It just your family seems like a very welcoming,
very friendly, very cool family. Absolutely, But what's the family conversation?
Now that you're home? They must have questions that they
didn't want to ask when they were on TV and such.

Speaker 4 (03:19):
Yeah, you know, my family, I'm so blessed. My family
really cares about just me and you know, my headspace,
and so every day they're checking in, you know, how's
your head, how's your heart?

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Like those types of.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
Questions, and you know, I think the priority for them
is that I'm happy and that I feel like good
in what's happening. So, you know, they wanted to know
a little bit more about Grant. They had a couple
questions about, you know, what he does for his day
to day job, like does he how close is he
with his family? Like those types of things. And even

(03:53):
my dad and his dad talk a lot, and my
mom and his mom talk a lot.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
I talk to his sister Taylor quite a bit. So
it's it's nice and good. Yeah, really good. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Want to ask.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
I want to ask a question. When you guys were
done filming and you knew that you guys were together, Yeah,
where did you meet up?

Speaker 4 (04:12):
Like?

Speaker 6 (04:12):
How did you keep it a secret?

Speaker 4 (04:14):
So they they will let us get together in La
every couple of weeks. And you're really kind of just
in a house hanging out alone.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
You don't leave.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
You don't, you know, have any connection to the outside
world again, So it's an unconventional way to I don't know,
stay connected because personally, I prefer just facetiming him every day,
waiting till we can be.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
In the public. But that's kind of how that goes.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
You meet up every like two or three weeks out
in la and just spend like a weekend together.

Speaker 6 (04:46):
You arrive separately, yes, oh yes, Now is there a
date like wedding plans or has there been a discussion
or is it too early?

Speaker 4 (04:57):
Too early for sure, I think that there's just so
much getting used to in this new normal for us
before we take that next step, because I also really
just want to enjoy it. I don't want I know,
wedding planning can be stressful. I have a big family,
you know, I know everyone wants to know everything all
the time. So we're kind of just putting it on

(05:17):
the back burner for a bit, just to really enjoy
each other's company.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
And we have a couple of good trips coming up now.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Juliana, if you look directly across from you in the studio,
you'll notice I'm sure you've been wondering why is there
a young teenage boy sitting in the studio at a microphone.
I'm guessing you probably wondered, right.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Yeah, tell me about that.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Riley Dunovan happened to be Lisa Dunovan's son. Yeah, but
here's the story. Since he was nine years old, he
has been a dedicated fan of the show The Bachelor,
so much so that once a week, the morning after
the episode, Riley comes on and breaks it all down.
That's correct, So awesome, Riley. Do you have questions for Juliana?

Speaker 5 (05:59):
Yeah? I have a lot. This is super Bowl, Yeah,
I mean Boston, this is crazy, like this is this
is so surreal to have a winner from Boston. First
of all. But first of all, i'd like to say,
because I've been thinking all season, I'm like, you know,
from the first episode, when you know girls start obviously
kissing Grant, It's like, yeah, what does his breath smell like?

(06:22):
Was it good, like a wave of heat that like
just like moves over you or is it just is
it good?

Speaker 3 (06:29):
It was very good.

Speaker 5 (06:30):
You know.

Speaker 4 (06:30):
I think that the team does a really good job
of also having like mints, and.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
So it was really good. He is good breath.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
Yeah, that's good, and let me just write that down.
Grant has very good breath.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
That's good.

Speaker 5 (06:46):
I can relax now.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
That's good.

Speaker 5 (06:49):
That was my That was my that was my hot question.
So as we went throughout the season, I noticed like
as we got through, like more of the women who
like just seemed like less like interest at the beginning
just sort of fell off and it's more of like
more interest as you get later in the season. So, like,

(07:09):
I know that a lot of the women were like, oh,
I absolutely love this guy after like three episodes in
which is like I'm assuming like three weeks or so.
It's like, what happens to those women? Are they like,
are they forced to like play along with the game
in reality when they're like, oh I can't. I just
couldn't see this working.

Speaker 4 (07:27):
Yeah, Well, you know, I think that there's so many
different ways you could go about this process, right, you'd
want to be true to yourself, but I think ultimately,
you know you're on the Bachelor, you know there's other
women involved. It's kind of how fast you want to
let your guard down to have that connection with him,
versus what I kind of did was kind of.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Just was like, yeah, I like him.

Speaker 4 (07:49):
But like, you know, I'm not sure I need to
spend more time with him to really get to know him.
And I think some of the girls did that as well,
and then they were like, the minimal amount of time
that you really get to spend with him in the
beginning unless you get one on ones, it's hard to
really like find that true connection of the possibility of
being in.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
Love or engaged at the end of it.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
So at some point, I think some of the girls
are like, eh, like this is not for me.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
I'm not going to get enough time.

Speaker 4 (08:15):
I've got to go, and they're just like kind of
playing the game at that point. And then some girls
are like, oh no, I want to be here till
the end. I'm gonna let my guard down and let
him into every aspect of me and just keep my
fingers crossed.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Well, it is an unusual process, super unusual. So the
moment you felt you loved Grant, yeah, was it hard
to listen to the other remaining women talking about their
relationships with Grant.

Speaker 4 (08:43):
For some reason, it wasn't hard for me because I
think it took me a really long time to even
like acknowledge that within my own head. And then verbalize
it to him. But at the same time, I just
always knew, like we are on the Bachelor, there are
other girls. I'm going to protect myself and I did
try and like get some information from girls, like where

(09:05):
are you.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
At with him, you know, to help myself out.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
I was so impressed that you stayed out of the drama. Yeah,
was that hard to do?

Speaker 4 (09:13):
You know, there really wasn't too much drama. I really
had such a good experience with a lot of the girls.
Of course, there was the one situation where I did
my best to like have a non confrontational conversation, and
you know, however it turned and was portrayed like it's
not up to me.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
But it really wasn't that hard.

Speaker 4 (09:34):
I was kind of just really friendly with everybody and
they were really respectful.

Speaker 2 (09:37):
So now we heard Grant is moving here. Yes, is
that accurate?

Speaker 3 (09:42):
Yes it is.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
Have you found a place yet together or are you looking?

Speaker 4 (09:47):
Or we actually have Mike EV's fabulous wife, Kelsey. She's
going to be helping us out. Yes, yeah, yes, we've been, Yes,
she is, and so we've just been kind of chit
chatting with her.

Speaker 3 (09:59):
Not thing.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
We don't have like a time frame necessarily for it
because we have so much travel coming up in the
next couple of months that, you know, we want to
make it make sense when we like, pick a place
and they're paying you.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
Is there an area you've got your mind off.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
We're really open to anything.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
You know.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
I would love to be in the city, but I'm
also not opposed to being outside of the city because
that's where I am now and it's easy to go
in and out for work. So I'm really up for
whatever makes the most sense.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
Let's go to the correspondent.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
Have any other questions?

Speaker 5 (10:26):
Yeah, yeah, and I would say, mm hmm. Well, the
reason why I picked I picked you to win, and
I picked the final two, which was Latia and Juliana.
I really felt like that the growth in the relationship.
Whenever someone gets the first impression Rose, I feel like
that personally starts off a little bit too strong. I've
never picked the winner of the show to be the

(10:48):
first impression Rose because I just feel like that's going
to crash. And I feel like that's kind of like
what happened with like Carolina, for example. I thought that
they started off really good, but then they they they
fell off and they crashed off, and I think one
of the great things about you guys' relationship was it
started much more normal and much more natural, and you
almost became like best friends, and then it's skyrocketed from there. Yeah,

(11:11):
which was good totally.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Do you agree with that?

Speaker 4 (11:13):
Yeah, I think that it's so awesome to see that
that's what you kind of picked up on because Grant
and I, the most important thing that we talked about
was wanting to like establish a friendship first, and so that's.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
What we did.

Speaker 4 (11:25):
It was slow and steady, and then once we got
to the end, we were kind of like okay, times
running out like are we in love? Or like are
we just going to be friends forever? And I did
tell him very early on. I think it was like
night two, I said, do not give me an early
one on one because I won't be able to open up.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
And those are the times.

Speaker 4 (11:46):
That you really have to just have isolated time morning
and night to like talk about things. And I knew
I was, like, I am such a like slow burn,
a closed book, like if you give it to me
too early, like I won't tell you the things I
would have wanted to tell you had it been later
on in the season.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
So we're talking with Juliana from The Bachelor, first person
from Boston to actually win The Bachelor. I have to
ask this before you got here today, were you aware
that we had a fourteen year old correspondent. We covered
The Bachelor every episode in the morning at.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
Anyone in your family tell you yes, my auntie Lynn,
my aunty.

Speaker 5 (12:24):
Lynn, thank you, Auntiulan, thank you.

Speaker 3 (12:29):
And she told me she's like, you better talk to him,
you better get on there with him.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
Go care Wow. So when you and Grant get together
and do we still say ty the not, do you
know what the two of you are going to be
doing here in the Boston area.

Speaker 4 (12:44):
I mean, he does a lot of remote work, so
he can kind of be flexible with whatever. I hope
to still have my job. I love my job.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
And you don't know yet. No, no, I didn't fire
you were It's okay.

Speaker 3 (12:56):
So I think I'm on a good, a good pace
to still have a job. But you know, I think
it's just a matter of.

Speaker 4 (13:04):
Taking advantage of the opportunities that come from all of this,
as long as it doesn't, you know, change my normalcy
in my life to a certain degree, because I just
I'm a creature of habit.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
You know, I'm really close with my family.

Speaker 4 (13:17):
I really do like to have kind of just that
safety net of the people around me. So yeah, I
think it's it's we're gonna we're gonna travel a lot,
We're gonna work hard, but we're gonna play hard too,
and just be around people that love us and celebrate
all the time.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
We should just have a thousand questions because you're a
huge super fan, Well.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
Are you now going to be doing stuff for the Bachelor,
like throughout the year, like doing appearances and things like
that where people can meet up with you.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
I think so, you know, I I don't really know
what that looks like. There's not too much insight into
like the months that are to come, like what happens
with it, So it is really.

Speaker 3 (13:52):
Day by day.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
But I I hope that I can do that, and
I hope that I can like connect with people and
and just you know, be a reason that we all
get together.

Speaker 5 (14:02):
Juliana, I want to ask if I wanna if I
want to I want to ask, so at the at
the final at the final episode, it was the Dominican Republic, right,
was it? Yes? So what was going through your mind?
Did you expect the result to be how it how
it ended up? Did you respect like, did you see

(14:23):
signs that you you felt like, Oh, I think it's
gonna be me.

Speaker 4 (14:26):
Yeah, I mean I think what's so hard about that
is you know there's somebody else involved, but you also
know the strength of your relationships, so you try to
pay attention to that. But for me, it was never
like I never was like, it's one hundred percent me
because I don't want to discredit the fact that there
is another relationship and person involved in this, and so

(14:50):
I did my best to be really hopeful and really excited,
but also like, no matter what happens, I'm gonna be okay.

Speaker 5 (14:56):
Did you talk with Letia like during those last couple
episodes or because the way that the show is produced,
it was it really seemed like they weren't. You guys
were like in like separate like hotels and separate, Like
we were totally separated. You really don't see each other?

Speaker 4 (15:10):
Oh wow, yeah, it's after after Scotland, we totally like
the only time we saw the girls was the Rose
Cermon But.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
It was weird how the two of you went at
the same time. I know, final moment, I'm like.

Speaker 4 (15:22):
Oh my god, it's so funny because it was so
rainy that day that you know, it was like my
producers like, all right, let's get ready to go, and
then we'd get walk towards the car and they'd be
like all right, never mind, and I'm like, okay, I'll
have another mimosa, and then it's like a right time
to go, and then we're in the car and we're
waiting for a really long time. And it never crossed
my mind that like he was having you know, issues

(15:46):
or trouble making a decision. I just think I knew
a majority of it, whatever, whether it was me or
Letia being sent home, he was having a hard time
trying to figure out how to do that. And then
I thought the weather had a big play in it.

Speaker 5 (15:59):
I think it always seems to rain on the final
episode in all the seasons, no matter what place you
go to, it always seems like it's raining. And I
don't know how that's possible.

Speaker 4 (16:09):
The same rain's good luck right on wedding days at least.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
So when you and Grant get married, is mikey V
going to be the DJ?

Speaker 1 (16:18):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (16:18):
Heck yeah. I think about a doubt.

Speaker 1 (16:21):
Hey, have you been able to hang out with any
of the Golden Bachelorette contestants at all? Did you get
to meet any of them?

Speaker 3 (16:27):
I did not so far.

Speaker 4 (16:29):
But Kathy from Bachelor Happy Hour or I think it's
Bachelor Happy Hour, she actually grew up in Newton and
so she DMed me and she knows my uncle Paul
and all of that. So it's been really cool to
just kind of see the odd strange connections you have to,
like some of the people in Bachelor Nation.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
When Grant is here, do you have favorite places of
your own that you want to take Grant to and
if so, what are they?

Speaker 1 (16:54):
Yes?

Speaker 4 (16:54):
Of course, Well, I mean my hometown was very true
to like who I am. We my family lives at
Olivia's Bistro and and so I mean I took him
there when he was here a couple of weeks ago.
Definitely going to take him there again. I love Brico
in the North End.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
Just like favorite, Yeah.

Speaker 4 (17:12):
Really yummy food, greatest Russo Martinis, in my workout places.
You know, I took him to be tone, It's like
just the I have a few staples in my life
that I really don't stray too far from and I'm like,
all right, come on, the.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
Ring you're wearing, is that the exact ring that you
were given on the show. Do you get to alter
it at all if you want?

Speaker 3 (17:31):
I don't believe so.

Speaker 4 (17:33):
I mean, honestly, they really just gave it to me
and there was no conversation about it. So but they
had to take it to get it sized appropriate.

Speaker 5 (17:40):
Ring neel mm hm.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
Question about Jesse.

Speaker 1 (17:44):
Palmer because you always talk about how often do you.

Speaker 4 (17:46):
See him really just at just at the ceremony.

Speaker 3 (17:50):
Yeah, he's the he's really like it.

Speaker 5 (17:52):
I laugh every time because I was watching the finale
and it's like, you know, they'll they'll zoom in on
the last rows and it's like, well, no kidding, Jessee,
it's the final rode.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
Everybody knows that.

Speaker 5 (18:02):
Everybody knows that.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
Yeah, we don't need that.

Speaker 1 (18:05):
That's funny.

Speaker 3 (18:05):
You don't really see him except for the roast.

Speaker 2 (18:07):
What it is, it's an easy gig.

Speaker 5 (18:12):
What does he do in his spare time? Is he
like Tanning and like the Dominican Republic Beach.

Speaker 4 (18:17):
I actually did run into him at one of the
resorts in the d R and he looked like he
was just having breakfast, like hanging out and good gig.

Speaker 3 (18:25):
Yeah, he was living his best life.

Speaker 2 (18:27):

this is great.
