Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to Local Voices. I'm brad Ford. This week we're
highlighting Oregon's environment and the role hunting and fishing plays
in it. The Pacific Northwest Sportsman Show runs February twelfth
through the sixteenth at the Portland Expost Center. It's an
opportunity to see the role that hunting and fishing plays
in Oregon's environment. Amanda Sola from the Oregon Deproperty Fish
and Wildlife joins us at Local Voices. ODIFNW will show

(00:27):
its efforts to save marine life and big horn sheep.
They're raffling two exclusive experiences at the Sportsman Show.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
This is something the agency is exceptionally excited about. We
have the great fortune to partner with the Sportsman Shows
where these raffles are going to be available for not
only at the Pacific Northwest Sportsman Show in Portland, but
the Central Oregon Sportsman Show in March in Rudmond. And
they're for volunteer experiences. Those are once in the lifetime

(00:58):
experiences you do not have the opportunity to get access
to as the average human. This is something our ODFW
staff members do professionally, but you get to go and
experience fishing within the Oregon Marine Reserves. That's one option.
You can go out with ODFW biologists and fish on

(01:20):
a hook and line survey to better understand and collect
data about population and abundance within those reserves. That's something
that is absolutely unique, and it's free to enter. The
winner and a guest will have the opportunity to go
on this day trip with those ODFW biologists. The other
trip is in Northeast Oregon, and it's the opportunity again

(01:42):
for the winner of that raffle and a guest to
participate in as much as they're willing and able a
big horn sheep capture and health check. I mean that
is something spectacular. These creatures are not the average experience
that you're going to be able to get up close
to personal with, and this is literally affording you the

(02:03):
opportunity to do it. So whether you are a hunter,
whether you are an angler, whether you are just someone
who loves animals generally or appreciates the species that are here,
this is a great opportunity to interact with bighorn sheep.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Talk to us about the free entry for a couple
of different groups.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
So free entry at the Pacific Northwest Sportsman Show for
our current Oregon Pioneer license holders. So if you've lived
in the state for fifty years it happened to be
sixty five years of age and older, you can show
your current license as well as your ID at the
door to get entry into the show. And that's something
that we're proud to partner again with the show on

(02:46):
is a joint celebration of odfw's fiftieth year of existence.
As ODFW in addition to the show celebrating its fiftieth
anniversary seemed apt and so we're really excited to make
it even easier for folks to come and engage with
us at the show. And then youth seventeen and under
also have that same opportunity, but there's not any special

(03:08):
licenses or anything they're going to have to show at
the door.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Yeah, talk to us about the ODFNW passport. What is that?

Speaker 2 (03:16):
The passport to the show is something that we're again
very much looking forward to interacting and engaging with as
many people as we can at the show. It's an
opportunity activity wise to win a ton of prizes while
you travel the show. Like most passports when you're thinking
of them as activities in hospitality and tourism. You collect

(03:40):
stamps as at varied locations. In this instance, there are
seven stamps at different locations throughout the show. Many of
those stamp locations are offering special prizes just for going
and getting a stamp at their particular booth. Once you
turn it in, after you've collected them all at the
ODFW booth, you'll have the opportunity to either collect another

(04:01):
wonderful collection of prizes, a lot of really useful gear
that you'd want to be using if you're going to
be outdoors recreating anyhow, there's a slew of choices there
from our partners. And then secondarily, it's an opportunity for
you to get an extra entry into that trip of
a lifetime raffle. It's the only way you can sweeten
your eyes. So we certainly encourage you. The passport's free

(04:25):
to participate in, and there's no rush to do it.
You do it at your leisure, and so if it
takes you a couple of days to do it, you
could do that, or you can get it all done
in a day.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Now, you say that there's magnet fishing.

Speaker 4 (04:38):
What's that magnet fishing?

Speaker 2 (04:42):
I can't necessarily give you a river in the middle
of the exposigner. So these are going to be wooden fish,
but you'll have the opportunity to test your metal, shall
we say, against some of these fish.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
There's a variety of.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Species from warm water to the iconic steelhead in salmon
here in Oregon. See what you can reel in and
then you can win some prizes. You'll get a little
harvest tag based on what you catch, turn it back
in at the o'd have to be a booth and
again you can pick up some tackle to help you
target those species. Or after you've done that, we want
to encourage you to then be going to visit the

(05:17):
Next Adventure booth as well as Fisherman Marine the Outdoor.
They're offering some fantastic grand prizes. There's a Perception Sunrise
ten kayak that is going to be raffled off only
to those magnet fishing participants and then thank you very
much the Next Adventure for that exceptionally kind donation for

(05:40):
this effort. And then a Fisherman's Marine and Outdoors offering
a camp chef smoke pro xt pellet grill as well
as a large Fisherman's fish cooler bag. It's kind of
like a kill bag, and these are again exceptional prizes
and exclusive to those participants. It's free to participate in

(06:01):
magnet fishing, no harm, no foul, and come on down
and enjoy.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
The experience terrific. There's always a lot of seminars. Talk
to us about the seminars that are available at the show.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
There are dozens of seminars and there are countless topics
that are going to be covered. ODFW is pleased to
be back this year offering more seminars with our staff
and biologists. We're going to be covering a lot of
interesting topics, specifically shell fishing in the North and Central
Coast and opportunities that.

Speaker 4 (06:35):
People might not necessarily realize how.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
Easy it is and where to go, so we're going
to try to help demystify that for folks. There's a
seminar where we're going to cover surf perch fishing off
jetties and peers, which is another opportunity I think that
has broad appeal for all ages. Will cover fall turkey
hunting as well as kind of more broad turkey hunting overview.

Speaker 4 (07:01):
They'll be waterfowl.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Hunting with the hyper focus on Savvy Island or a
lot of individuals that love waterfowl hunting on Savvy. We're
going to try to help make that as simple as
possible to understand so that you can have a lot
of success when you're out there. We'll also cover something
that's really important to the agency that we really want
to make sure hunters know about and what they can

(07:24):
do to help us, and that has to do with
chronic wasting disease. There will be a special guest that
will be arriving during that seminar, but you'll have to
come to the seminar to figure out who that is.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
But you will not be disappointed.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
And I think we're just really excited to be sharing
a lot of the really important information that ODFW has
available to us all the time about where to find
a lot of these particular opportunities, how to access them,
how to maximize the time that you're out in the
field and on the water so that people are as

(08:04):
happy with the experiences and harvesting and having a great time.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
Yeah, So there are another couple of shows coming up.
Tell us about those.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
Yeah, we're excited to be at a variety of shows
coming up. The first one immediately after the Pacific Northwest
Sportsman Show, it's going to be held in Salem at
the Oregon State Fairgrounds.

Speaker 4 (08:22):
It's the Saltwater Sport Fishing Show.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
We're going to have a variety of marine biologists that
will be present to go into in depth or with
regards to shellfish opportunity, ocean fishing opportunity. We can certainly
have further discussions about the marine reserves and what the
studies that are happening out there. It'll be a great opportunity.
Then we are going to be in Redmond at the

(08:46):
Dsute County Fairgrounds and Expous Center. That will be March
sixth through ninth in Redmond again and it'll be well,
you'll see a lot of the same installations that we're
having at the Pacific Northwest Sportsman Show, but the seminar
topics will be different, the passport experience will be different.

(09:06):
So there is absolutely value in making sure that you're
coming and seeing us at each of these experiences to
learn about a variety of different things that the agency
is proud to offer.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
Terrific and so if people listeners want to find out more,
they can check out the Saltwater Sport Fishing Show or
the Central Oregon Sportsman Show. Let me ask you about
something else. ODFMW partners with the important Trailblazers for Everyone
Belongs Outdoors Day tell us about that.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
So this is something that's brand new for the agency,
but we are also looking forward to doing on March
twenty third. It's a three pm game on a Sunday.
It's against the reigning champions, the Boston Celtics, and we
are just trying to get as many individuals that are hunters, anglers, conservation.

(10:00):
If you identify as someone who really cares about fish,
wildlife and the outdoors and Oregon, we'd love to see
you there at the game and sort of celebrating in
community the value of the splendor of Oregon's outdoors here
and how much we care about it and enjoy recreating
in it. We want to be able to encourage as
many individuals that enjoy all of those things to show

(10:24):
up and help us celebrate together. And we have a
discount code that we can share with everyone that will
allow you twenty percent off your tickets. It'll get your
early entry, you'll get a chance to get down on
the court and shoot some postgame free throws. Potentially some
additional interactions with folks there at the game, and it'll

(10:47):
just be a really good time. But you'll want to
make sure you buy your tickets by February twenty third
via that link to secure that discount and those exclusive experiences.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
Great. Where do they find that link?

Speaker 2 (11:00):
You can go to MYODFW dot com to find it directly.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Trey Carskadan is the organizer of the Pacific Northwest Sportsman Show.

Speaker 5 (11:08):
Trey, this is the fiftieth year for the show. What
an accomplishment it really is. It's you know, Lachland Trade
Shows is an eighty year old company and these sports
shows actually started before you know, but they were travel
and sports shows. So it's a pure sportsman show, and
a sportsman show combines fishing and hunting primarily and also

(11:29):
about some outdoor recreation, but that's the primary focus, and
it's it's it's a unique category within the category of
sportsman shows in the United States and actually North America.
It's one of the largest, it's second largest in North America,
but in terms of the retail impact, it's the largest

(11:51):
in the country. It's certainly the largest west of the Mississippi,
and in terms of what it does in terms of
the balance between hunting and fishing. It is singular in
that regard. There's nothing else like it, and so folks
here locally across the region. This is what they have
to measure other shows against. So if you're another show,

(12:13):
I'm sorry, but they've become so used to it that
I think they've lost some idea of just how special
this show really is. There's nothing else like it.

Speaker 1 (12:27):
How many vendors you know, in terms.

Speaker 6 (12:30):
Of exhibits, we have about eight hundred vendors. I'd say,
you know, somewhere between six and seven hundred. Kind of
the magic sauce with this show is the blend of
manufacturers and retailers. So we have a number of large
retailers that are in the show, and we have manufacturer boosts.
In the case of Next Adventure, for example, you have
the Next Adventure booth, which is the retail portion of it,

(12:51):
and then we have manufacturer boosts that are surround to
jem Boil. With Johnston Outdoors, you have a number of
kayak manufacturers. You can go talk to the factory experts,
you can look at the products, and you can walk
across the island buy it. And that's what makes this
show unique among any other show of its kind in
the country. And now you multiply that with Fisherman's Marine

(13:14):
and Outdoor England Marine Supply Buy mart G four and
it goes on and on and on. The presenting sponsor
of the show Loophold, which is also a local company.
They're in the show. They're into optics, so folks that
are looking for, you know, discontinued items, hard to find items,
new items are just released. It's another reason they come

(13:35):
to the show. And a place like Loophold, you know
they'll be showcasing all that as well as the other
six or seven hundred that are in the show.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
Wow. Another big highlight are the seminars that are held.
Talk to us about those. It really runs a very
wide range of topics.

Speaker 6 (13:51):
We worked very hard on that, Brad. It starts in
June and we start making our calls and kind of
putting our strategy together. Again, nothing else like it with America.
It is the single best similar series in in uh
this continent. And and that's that's a tall order. We
only used speakers once, so it's one and done because

(14:13):
you know how many times you're gonna see the same
movie in in a week. So and it goes from
everything from surf perch fishing and black tail hunting to
fall turkey to you know, all kinds of salmon, steel ahead,
bass trout. Uh, you know, we cover it all really
and so if somebody, you know, really enthusiasts show up,

(14:34):
because other experts are giving these seminars and there's something
to learn, and if you're new to it, it's an
opportunity to kind of dip your toe in the water
and see, you know, what's out there and what the
opportunities are. This year unlike any other that we've had.
We've you know, our relationship with the Oregon Department of
Fish and Wildlife has grown substantially and they have a

(14:57):
major footprint in this year's show. So we've been We
tried it last year and it worked really well to
have a couple of their biologists, a few of their
biologists give seminars. These are the folks that know where,
you know, the gems are and they're out there in
the field. They know where the abundance is and now
they're going to share that with you where to go

(15:18):
and what to do. And it's on a number of
different topics. We have all the seminars and really encourage
folks to take a look at it on our website,
the sportshows dot com. There's literally dozens of seminars being
offered over the five days of the show.

Speaker 1 (15:33):
Terrific. I know when I took our kids there, they
had the trout pond. Is that still part of the show.

Speaker 6 (15:38):
It is the leshchweb Kids Free trout Pond. It's an
iconic feature in the show. It's become multi generational, so
grandparents they caught their first trout in that pond are
now bringing their grandkids to do the same thing. So
it's in fact, we had a gentleman last year that
had his son and his grandson and they had a

(15:59):
news clip thing from back in the seventies or seventies
sometimes showing him with his son catching the trout, and
he'd done the same thing. So you know, it's really
cool to see what goes on and really popular.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
Yeah. Yeah, our kids loved it and they just loved it.
You talked about the total number of vendors who are there.
This is really a cross country show. I mean, give
people an idea of how vendors come across the scenery
to come to this show.

Speaker 6 (16:28):
Vendors come from all over the world, from Africa and
New Zealand and Europe, certainly Canada Alaska to be a
part of the show. We have lots of local folks
as well, major tackle manufacturers, major hunting manufacturers, optics and apparel,
and virtually every category is covered. We also offer a

(16:49):
two day pass. If you get the two day pass,
you can really immerse yourself. The problem with going only
one day is you'll take a look at the seminar
schedule and go, Jez, I can spend all day just
in these seminars, and so if you really want to
get the full benefit of the show, really recommend that
people plan for two days.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
And so if people want to find out more, maybe
plan what they're going to go see. Look at the vendors,
look at what seminars are available. That's all listed on
the website.

Speaker 6 (17:17):
It is, it is, It's all right there the Sports
Shows dot com.

Speaker 1 (17:21):
Magnet fishing is growing in popularity. Brian Knutson, co founder
of Next Adventure outdoor Gear and Apparel, joins us on
local Voices. Brian magnet fishing is using magnets to fish
for metal things on the bottom of rivers, and lakes.
But there's a different type of magnet fishing going on
at the Pacific Northwest Sportsman Show.

Speaker 7 (17:39):
Outside of the show, you know, it's big magnets in
the water pulling stuff up from the bottom. But at
the show ODFW has taken it and brought it inside,
which is pretty cool. And you got these wooden fish
that you get to go go for with your magnets,
and we have donated a kayak to that as one
of the prizes, is one of the prizes, one of

(17:59):
the grand so somebody magnet fishing theoretically will win a kayak.

Speaker 1 (18:05):
Wow. Now you have a kayak pond at the show,
tell us weep that we do.

Speaker 7 (18:09):
It's thirty six feet across, about four foot deep and
it's been one of those fun things that's kind of
started out with us smaller and then.

Speaker 1 (18:19):
Bill and Trey really came.

Speaker 7 (18:20):
To us and said, hey, listen, how can we expand
the kayaking section of the show, because it became something
that was you know, kayakfishing has really kind of grown
in the last few years, and so it's been really
great with them and they man, they have stepped up
provided a big pond for us and it really is
things that we will be able to put people on

(18:40):
it so they can show you how to outfit your boat,
how to paddle the boat, maybe different stances for fishing.
So we'll have multiple seminars on there every day for
people to kind of watch and get a field for it.
And you know, see how these kayaks react in the
water and do some of that kind of stuff. So
that's the idea really behind it.

Speaker 1 (18:58):
And you guys have deals on the we are for.

Speaker 7 (19:01):
This show and this show only. We're going to have
some crazy VIP deals of like as low as six
as much as sixty seven percent off.

Speaker 1 (19:07):
Talk to us a little bit about next Adventure. Outdoor
Gear and Apparel its in downtown Portland. Everybody knows where
it is. If you like, I'll give you a tiny
bit of history.

Speaker 7 (19:16):
So Deak and I I've been friends since we were
six and eight, and that's my business partner, dep and
his mom and my mom went to high school together,
so that's how long we've known each other. And for
many many years we you know, we were always outdoor fishing.
My dad I was fishing with you know, we would
go to CQ, we'd go to all these places. So
the outdoors was really a big chunk of what we

(19:38):
did in those days. And then we decided one day
it's like, man, it's hard to find equipment at good
prices and stuff. So we always wanted to kind of
do something together and Portland just happened to be the place.
It was the right time at the right moment, and
we opened up our first door at like fifteen hundred
square feet, which is right where the one is on
Stark and Grand right now, and you know, hope that

(19:59):
hope that we could sell one hundred dollars a day
and you know, make it. And I think the first
day we sold three hundred and never really looked back
after that day.

Speaker 1 (20:06):
So yeah, So we slowly took.

Speaker 7 (20:08):
Over the Grand on the corner there and then, which
is doing really well. And then we also have the
Paddle Sports Center, which is one of the largest kayak
shops around in the in the Northwest, which is only
about I don't know, two and a half blocks away
from the Grand Store.

Speaker 1 (20:25):
And then we're out at Scappoose Bay out there.

Speaker 7 (20:29):
We have a place out there and we have a
I guess they call on it the Kayak Shack, but
it's basically a hangar that we bought that sits out
on the dock, and we keep all our rental boats
so you can go out there basically try all these
boats that you're interested in, you think about and stuff,
and I mean we try to provide that for people
because I mean, let's face it, you don't go and

(20:49):
buy a brand new car and not test drive it
a little bit, right, talk to.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
Me about your display at the Sportsman Show. What do
you have and what will people find there?

Speaker 7 (21:00):
Some of the things we'll have there which is gonna
be great. We're gonna have obviously a bunch of fishing
kayaks and a bunch of our our ambassadors there and
our staff there that are kind of experts in it
can really help set you up, you know. I mean
part of it is, you know, as Trey was saying,
the beginner sometimes is a little scared to ask. Yeah,
and we try, we pride ourselves on not creating that

(21:23):
type of thing. We you know, come on and ask
all the questions you want and we'll get you know,
try to get you set up. But it also as
an opportunity to really see a couple of them will
have their completely tricked out kayaks there which really kind
of allows you to kind of see, hey, this is
where I could get. This is like all the stuff
I could get on my kayak, and this is the
kind of stuff I need to set up. We'll also

(21:44):
have a bunch of camping equipment, so that's you know,
that's kind of what our booth is going to be, like,
we're gonna have deals and stuff there.

Speaker 1 (21:50):
You'll find Jared Higginbotham from Yakama Bay to the Pacific
Northwest Sportsman showed Jared tell us about the different kinds
of fishing in the Northwest.

Speaker 8 (21:58):
Well, the Northwest is unique. There's one reason I've never
left this place, and it's you know, from rivers to lakes,
to streams to creeks to oceans to farm ponds. The
Northwest is just a plethora of fishing, you know, and
as far as variety of fishing, you know, you've got
everything from you know your bass, small mouth and large mouth,
all your pan fish, you know, monster fish likes freshwater, sturgeon,
you got salmon, you know, different species from you know,

(22:20):
chinooks or kings, cohos, sac eyes, you know, it's just
and steelhead, you know, we got steel that then you
hit the ocean. You know, I mean not to mention
all were great trout fishing, but you hit the ocean
and then you got you know, everything that's in the ocean,
all the tooty critters and all the crazy yummy stuff
from crabbing to lin cod to halibit to go and
tunea fishing and we salmon fish out in the ocean
and all your bottom fishing and so, you know, and

(22:42):
clanning all. It's just the Northwest is just outdoors in Paradise. Really,
it's I love it here, so.

Speaker 1 (22:49):
It absolutely is. You work for Yakama Bait. Tell us
about your company.

Speaker 8 (22:53):
Yeah, so I'm very fortunate, you know. I mean, anybody
it's ever fished a rooster tail in their entire life, right,
and they know what a roostertail is.

Speaker 3 (23:01):
Well.

Speaker 8 (23:01):
The company I worked for, Yakumo Bate, designed the roostertail.
It was designed in the mid forties by a guy
named Howard Warden Henson named Warden Roostertail. Yako Mobate has
been around since nineteen thirty four. It was incorporated in
nineteen forty one. Originally it was called Warden's Lure Company,
and so when he incorporated his Buddies in forty one.
That's where Yakomo Bait Company came from because it's in
the Yakoma Valley and we've been thriving and kicking out

(23:23):
new gear, innovating new products and all that for fishermen
across the globe for over ninety years.

Speaker 1 (23:30):
Now. You have a spring chinook Mega seminar on I
think it's Friday, tell us about that.

Speaker 8 (23:35):
Those spring chinook are our favorite fish in the year
to fish for. It's really after winter. It's our first
chance to get out and get some trolling and fishing
for salmon again. But the spring chinook are unique, right,
they enter the river really early, but they spawned late,
and so when they come in the they have this
enormous announce of fat and so they're just like the
highest grade chinooks in salmon you can eat all year.
And so that's why these Everybody wants to catch these.

(23:56):
That's why these seminars are super important, because you know
you might get one or two, two, three, four chances
a day if you're lucky. And so these seminars and
I'm given we're talking about everything on the Columbia River
basically from what we call the Lower River which is
from the Ridgefield area to cath Lament, and then the
mid River which is basically from Ridgefield upriver to Bonneville Dam,
including like the Moltnomah Channel, and then Upper River which
is above Bonnleville Dam. So we fish these fishes, they

(24:19):
move up river and migrate, and as we can fish
these fish, you know, we get things like water flow changes,
water temperature changes, you know, the run timing when the
bulks of the fish come through. And you know, as
these things change, our techniques change, and the way we
fish them change, the places we fish them change, and
so it's a lot of times it's hard for people
to understand that. And so that's what this two hour
mega seminar is. Most of the time my seminars are

(24:42):
one hour. But to really explain this and get this
in detail, with all the little crumbs from the cookie,
you know, all the stuff that you really want that
inside info, it's going to take two hours. I'm not
doing it solo. My good friend Shane Maguson, who is
a phenomenal guy, been doing it for thirty years, one
of the best fishing in the Northwest. He and I
are tag team in this thing. So wealth and knowledge
from two guys have been salmon fishing for you know,

(25:02):
forty years plus.

Speaker 1 (25:03):
So it starts at three o'clock Friday, Is that right?

Speaker 8 (25:06):
Three o'clock Friday, three to five pm. Is in the
Blue Theater. That is at the Pacific Northwest Sportsman Show
in Portland, Oregon at the Expo Center. And it is fun.
My seminars are fun. I give away free stuff, and
there just might be there might be my bed friend
Shane's super secret spring salmon shrimp recipe that I put
inside of my seminar stuf. If you catch that seminar,

(25:26):
I would take your phone out and snap a shot
of that.

Speaker 1 (25:28):
Martin Lefever, owner of Addicted Fishing, will be at the
Pacific Northwest Sportsman Show. You got to check out his
website if you're a beginner or a novice. Martin tell
us about how Addicted Fishing got started.

Speaker 9 (25:39):
Yeah, so Addicted Fishing I actually started in two thousand
and nine and it was originally called Fishing Atticts Northwest.
And the whole motivation and passion behind it is, you know,
I grew up kind of in a pretty rough scenario.

Speaker 3 (25:53):
I was kind of in and out of foster care.

Speaker 9 (25:55):
My entire life, and you know, both my parents and
my siblings struggled from heroin addiction, unfortunately. And I had
some memories, you know, growing.

Speaker 3 (26:06):
Up fishing with my dad at Lackmus Lake, you know.

Speaker 9 (26:08):
Catching catfish here in Clark County, and I think that
kind of stuck with me as I got older.

Speaker 3 (26:14):
And I was just addicted to fishing. Like I think,
I loved fishing so much.

Speaker 9 (26:20):
I always wanted to be on the water that I
just never got into any of that stuff that my
family got into.

Speaker 3 (26:26):
I never got into drugs, I never got into.

Speaker 9 (26:28):
Anything of that because of my addiction to fishing. And
through all that, as I got older, you know, I
started thinking, like, how many kids or how many people
are out there like that that.

Speaker 3 (26:38):
Are like me. You know.

Speaker 9 (26:39):
Unfortunately, fishing in the Pacific Northwest especially, is very generational.
It's passed down from your grandpa to your dad to
the kids. And it's hard. You know, catching salmon and
steelhead and trout is not the easiest hobby to get
involved in. And so as I was growing up trying
to learn, there wasn't a lot of information out there.

Speaker 3 (26:59):
You know.

Speaker 9 (26:59):
There was a few magazines and a couple forums, online,
but there was nothing really out there to help you
kind of learn how to get into the sport. And
so I thought, man, I want to start. I want
to start something. And originally it wasn't even it wasn't
even a business. I had no intentions of trying to
make money. I just had this passion for fishing, and

(27:19):
I wanted to teach other people to be excited about
something that was so healthy, because the reality is is
when you get addicted, like a lot of the Northwest
community is, to fishing, you just don't like. It just
consumes you. You have no time for anything else because
all you care about is fishing.

Speaker 3 (27:37):
So that was how it was born.

Speaker 9 (27:38):
And then, you know, fast forward and now I changed
the name kind of halfway through the journey, realizing that
the mission could be so much bigger than just the Northwest.

Speaker 3 (27:49):
You know.

Speaker 9 (27:50):
I had it titled Fishing Addicts Northwest and it kind
of pigeonholed me into the corner to not really grow it.
And I wanted it to be nationwide someday. You know,
I thought, you know, how many other addicts or fishing
addicts are out there. They can have this healthy addiction
to something that's so awesome and so wholesome, and so
I changed the name to Addicted Fishing and I've been

(28:10):
kind of grinding ever since.

Speaker 1 (28:11):
