Speaker 1 (00:00):
Solid game. Defensively, I don't know his stats right off
the top of my head. We had a really solid game,
So they've got guys that are playing really good football.
I expect this game to be whoever makes the fewest mistakes,
who can out execute, and who can control the ball
and you know, maintain the clock.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
So let's take out the strategy, let's take out the rivalry, everything,
just from a pure enjoyment standpoint, Really, how much fun
is it to be able to play Ridgdale, especially a
second game of the season.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
I really like it this year because it opens up
our home season. You know, we were away Week one,
have a tough game, come home, Riggiale gets a win,
a tough win, So we kind of have opposing trajectories
as far as a win loss, but we're both still
trying to work to get better. And that creates a
lot of excitement in the community because people feel it
could go either way or that it's going to be

(00:52):
a tough game. So I think it's gonna be awesome
for our communities to get together and battle it out.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
All right, coach, thanks for stopping by and letting us talk.

Back here at Elgin High School for the premiere optometry countdown.
To kickoff, let's go through some of the other games
going on in the area. Other Marion County teams. They're
in action tonight. Ashland travels to Harding. They're playing for
the Eerie Bell, so that'll be a fun game to watch.
Ashland actually has that bell from the victory last year.
Hope well A Louden visits Pleasant. This match up a

(04:02):
really good matchup between two traditionally powerful teams. Hope all
A Louden just north of here in Seneca County, I believe,
or just north of there, so this should be a
good game between those two River Valley travels to Madison
Comprehensive to take on Mansfield Madison. Madison was very competitive
with Shelby last week for the first half. Then Shelby

(04:24):
was able to overcome that and able to win that game.
River Valley obviously took a loss last week. After keeping
that game close and being tied in the fourth quarter,
a couple of late turnovers doom them. In the northern ten,
Buckeye Central travels to Ada, Colonel Crawford goes to Cardinal Stritch,
Mohawk travels to Cardington, Winford goes to East Knox, Gallion

(04:46):
is at carry Seneca, East is at Gibsonburg, Upper Sandusky
at Mount Gilead, and be Cyrus is at Triad.

Speaker 6 (04:54):
Other games.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
In the MOAC, Clear Fork goes to Grandville, Highland travels
to Dalton, Centerberg visit It's Ontario, and Shelby travels to Lexington.
In the KMAC, Danville goes to Utica in Loudonville travels
to Worthington Christian and then other area teams of note.
Buckeye Valley goes to Heath, North Union travels to Liberty Union,

(05:17):
and Kenton goes to Ottawa Glandorf. So those are some
of the games that are going on tonight in the area,
a lot of good football to watch, and as coach
Kuzio has said many times, if you see lights on,
go ahead and stop at the game, right coach.

Speaker 8 (05:30):
Yeah, there's no question. This is the best entertainment in
town right now, wherever you're at, if you see lights on, stop,
support the kids, support the coaches and the communities, and
hopefully they'll put on a good show for you tonight.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
And we expect there to be a good show here
tonight at Elgin as we're anxiously awaiting the kickoff of
the Matthew sonda Acura Game of the Week between Elgin
and Ridgdale. We'll go ahead and take a break when
we come back. Comments from Ridgdale coach Corey Chapman, you're
listening to countdown to kickoff on fourteen ninety w.

Speaker 15 (09:02):
Joining me right now.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Richielle and head coach Cory Chapman coached nice win last
week at a hilltop and it is hilltop, right. I
always get it wrong. You traveled a long way to
get there, but you were able to get the victory.
And you mentioned that you were great from twenty to
the twenty, but you guys kind of stalled out. What
were some of the things that you saw that maybe

(09:23):
caused that? And then what were some of the things
that you really liked what you saw on that team?

Speaker 15 (09:28):
Well?

Speaker 6 (09:28):
What caused did?

Speaker 16 (09:29):
I think just some people in different positions maybe ran
the wrong route or didn't get enough depth, or we
missed the block. But those are things that happened week one.
You know you're gonna have some ups and downs. Things
I liked is how physical we were up front on
the offensive line, we ran the ball I think two

(09:51):
ninety five total my junior running back Michael D's to
thirty three on.

Speaker 6 (09:57):
Thirty one carries.

Speaker 16 (09:58):
Now that's a lot of care Arrius one guy, especially
Week one and how hot it was and everything. But
you didn't he never fell backwards. I was thinking everything
was going forward, and I think the line fed.

Speaker 6 (10:10):
Off of that as well. So that was a good
thing to say.

Speaker 16 (10:12):
In defense, they held tight.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
Okay, So, and you talked about Michael D's last year
very much like a role player. He was a starter,
but didn't didn't necessarily factor into the offensive game plan
as much. He looks to be bigger this year and
he looks like he's probably a very strong runner. Talk
about his progress from last year to this year.

Speaker 16 (10:36):
Oh, you're right. So he was a role player last year. Yes,
he was in the backfield, but just like a lot
of the kids this year, he didn't have to do
He wasn't asked to do a lot. We had the
Nathan Thales and Landon Murphy's, Evan Ricketts, Brandon Townshend's. We
had those guys in positions already this year. Nathan land

(11:03):
and they're gone so we're asking other people to step
in those shoes and feel those positions, and I think
Michael took that.

Speaker 6 (11:11):
He took it to heart.

Speaker 16 (11:13):
He was in the weight room, working out, getting stronger,
getting faster, and he knew team was gonna need him
and he had to get his body ready for it.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
So I want to kind of move to the defense now.
Yet you lost a heck of a defensive player, Nathan Thiel,
one of the best linebackers I think I'd seen in
the county. But you still return a really good chunk
of that defense. And I think something that was maybe
in my opinion underrated last year year's secondary really some

(11:47):
hard hitters back there. What did you see in that
first game that you really liked out of your defense?

Speaker 16 (11:53):
Well, yes, our secondary we got some thing as a
clean up there. But you forget we're bringing back to
all Ohio d ms Okay, Evan Rickets, and Brandon Townsend.
But then we also are bringing back Michael Justice. He
tours ACL last year against Elgin week two. He's back, stronger, bigger,

(12:18):
faster than healthy. So that front four for us is amazing.

Speaker 6 (12:26):
I put them.

Speaker 16 (12:27):
Against anybody in the county in our conference. I put
him against anybody stopped the rod and pass rush.

Speaker 6 (12:35):
Our secondary. We bring back JJ.

Speaker 16 (12:39):
Now he tours his knee up at the end of
the season, so we're slowly.

Speaker 6 (12:43):
Bringing him back.

Speaker 16 (12:44):
But week one he went out there and he was
our thumper in the backfield and the backs and he
came up and thumped a lot of people and it
just it was natural for him. We also have Caden Daniel,
our big, tall one dB. He didn't have to play
defense last year, and last year it was one of

(13:05):
those we'd throw them in he didn't want to. But
this year he's all committed and he had two interceptions,
could have had three, dropped one, but just the ballhawks
that we have, we dropped a lot of interceptions last week.
But those guys were flying around. You can't can't hold
yourselves hold your head down on that. Our linebackers got

(13:29):
some young guys, but we also got some guys.

Speaker 6 (13:31):
Who can deliver the blows.

Speaker 16 (13:32):
So we're gonna be flying around this week.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
Yeah, well, let's talk about this week. You've got Elgin
last year, very one sided loss, you know, just a
lopside of game. And I got the feeling in talking
with you after that game and just seeing how the
season went, you felt like you just didn't represent yourselves
physically like you thought you could. So this very much.

(13:57):
I think what I've been hearing is is kind of
a revenge game for you guys to kind of get
back what you felt like you didn't get last year.
So talk about this comment team and how you feel
like you guys stack up against them.

Speaker 6 (14:10):
Oh, yeah, you were correct.

Speaker 16 (14:12):
Last year we didn't put our best foot forward, and
I think as a staff and myself, the game might
have been bigger. We made it bigger than what it was,
and I think our guys felt that, and they exuded
a lot of energy.

Speaker 15 (14:30):
Early, and you.

Speaker 6 (14:31):
Know how it is.

Speaker 16 (14:33):
Once you desert that energy, if you don't have anything
in reserve tank, it's gone. But I think that was
last year. So this year it's one game. Yes it's
a rivalry game, but it's one game. And I stressed
that last year at the end of that game was
it wasn't our best. But we still have eight more

(14:54):
and the same thing this year, except now it's more
we're working on little things, cleaning up the little things,
and hopefully we're able to show that this Friday.

Back Here at Elchin High School with the Matthews Sonda
Actre High School Game of the Night. Both teams out
on the field and getting ready to have uh have
the UH national anthem played, and right now they're honoring
one of the Elgin players. I didn't catch what that

(17:04):
was all about land in the valley. A senior defensive
lineman missed a whole bunch of last year apparently, and
he was doing basic training. Okay, very nice, So congratulations
to him, coach. What do you make of this crowd
out here tonight, I'll.

Speaker 8 (17:24):
Tell you it's good to be back here at Elgin.
That always is fields in great condition, and it's a

Back here at Elgin High School for the Matthews Hondakri
a high school game of the week between Ridgedale and Elgin.
Eric Moseley alongside coach John Cuzio. Eighty eight degrees is
our game time temperature. It was really hot as that
as we first got here. When we got here early. Luckily,
Jason Hicks, the ad here at Elgin, takes care of

(19:56):
everyone so well. He had an air conditioner up in
the press box and had this thing shut off to
everything and it was nice and cool in here, So
hats off to him. He is a class act. Coach.
Go ahead and give us the starting lineups if you will.

Speaker 8 (20:10):
Okay, Starting for the offense for the Comets, we got
number nine at quarterback, Zach Bauers number ten. Nash Lust
receiver Quinton Harrison is their go to guy on offense,
number thirteen, running back, Gavin Rhoades number eighteen running back,
tight end Barrett Helms number twenty four, and the Van

(20:32):
Gundy Jack Van Gundy forty five at running back. Emery
Skaggs fifty will be on the line at guard, Landon
Shepherd fifty one tackle, Dylan Phillips fifty two at center,
Henry Greenley number fifty at tackle, and Garrett Lowry defensive
tackle number fifty two for the Comets all right Elgin
offensive line guard. Elgin will receive the opening kickoff. National

(20:55):
ust back to receive kicking for Ridgdale will be number thirteen,
Derek Mahaffey at junior and Elgin in all red accented
by gray silver helmets with the red stripe gray letters.
Ridgdale white jerseys with blue lettering red accents. They're Caroline

(21:16):
blue pants with red stripe white helmets with the word
rocket on one side. There's the kickoff and it goes
hits at the twelve. Luss takes it at the ten,
up ahead to the twenty, cuts it outside and he's
taken down actually at about the nineteen yard line. That's
where the comments will start. First and ten after that
Ohio State University at Marion kickoff. Yeah, real nice tackle there.

(21:38):
Looked like number thirteen on the tackle. That was Derek Mahaffey,
junior for the Rockets. Sophomore Kingston McGarry will be at
strong safety, linebacker, Michael D's cornerback, Caden Daniel, Aiden Saire
at free safety. JJ Slaughterback at strong safety. We'll get

(22:03):
the rest of him here in a second. Jack Van
Gundy in the backfield. Man in motion is Harrison Now
on a rollout, there's the quarterback throws deep downfield that
is almost picked off, and that was Zach Bauers on
the pass. And I can't tell who it was intended for,
but he just kind of threw a rainbow up there
on that rollout. Yeah, it was intended for number twenty four.

(22:24):
Barrett Helms, tight end, was kind of going down in
the middle, but he kind of threw it up for
grabs and almost intercepted. Rest of the Rockets Evan Ricketts,
you'll hear hear him a lot. Defensive end, linebacker Hunter Hutchinson, linebacker,
freshman Briton Potcutter, defensive tackle Michael Justice, linebacker Brody Foltz,

(22:49):
and defensive tackle Lake Mitchell.

Speaker 2 (22:52):
Second and ten, handoff on a sweep goes to Chase Gilliam.
He gets to the outside and tackled about the twenty
six yard line. Excuse me, that was Brennan Lukart on
the carry.

Speaker 8 (23:06):
Yeah, comments try to catch him nap it on the
first play of the game, try to throw it up,
but they go to the go to guy there and
pick up a nice gain on second down. Now it's
gonna be third and a very manageable about four and
a half yards.

Speaker 2 (23:20):
So third and four for the Comets up under center Bowers.
Now he hands off to Harrison, runs the outside up
to the thirties, got the first down and more down
at the thirty seven yard line. That's Matthews Hondaker a
first down for the Comics.

Speaker 7 (23:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (23:37):
Actually it's gonna be Roads on the carry.

Speaker 8 (23:39):
Number of Roads, Yeah, coming around on the sweep there
and picking up a first line first down as you stated,
And the Comets are gonna now try to go on
the ground and see what the defensive line from Ridgdale's
made of here.

Speaker 6 (23:53):
Early in this game.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
So I just realized up under is Quentin Harrison. So
he hands the ball off straight ahead, that goes to
Jack van Gundy and about again of three. But that's interesting.
Zach Bauers was starting last week and we had not
gotten any indication that he wouldn't be playing. But and

(24:17):
it's apologies to everyone, it's hard for us to see
the numbers a little bit because they kind of blend in.
So I didn't even realize that wasn't Bowers out there.
But Quentin Harrison has been up under center this whole time. Yeah,
it was also on the carry probably before that. Believe
was that last number ten. I apologize for that too.
So second down in seven and out to the outside

(24:40):
of Harrison. Now he throws it across an incomplete intended
receiver was open, but just underthrew him. Brings up third down. Yeah,
third and long. For the comments, they don't really like
to have that situation run on the wing tea, but
looks like they really want to try Harrison a quarterback
here tonight. And maybe they saw something here that Harrison

(25:02):
can show other than just running the football. So we're
gonna see what happens here. Comments are faced with a
big third down play early in this game, and Harrison
takes it straight ahead and is making some headway and
actually gets the first down. That was a rugby scrum
right there for the Matthews Hondiaker first down.

Speaker 8 (25:20):
Yeah, they do it as well as anybody. And now
that you're allowed to push and shove the running back
down the field, there were a few years ago that
you weren't allowed to do that. But right now going
down the field picking up a first down, and maybe
they're figure in Ridgdale's going to be in a third
and soft defense anticipating the pass and paid off for him.

Speaker 2 (25:42):
First and ten at the Elgin forty seven yard line. Again,
the same play, in this time he breaks through up
ahead to the forty It looked like he was stopped
at the forty nine yard line and now he breaks
ahead for another Matthews Hondaker first down. That was Harrison
up to the thirty nine yard line of Ridgdale.

Speaker 8 (26:02):
Yeah. Up until this year he was the guy that
was toting the rock quite a bit for him. But
this time the only difference is now he doesn't have
to make a hand off, He just takes it and goes.
Quinton has grown a lot since last year. He's six
foot one point eight. He's put on some weights, a
lot of nice strength there, and it, boy, it showed
there as he went up through right in the middle
of the heart of the Rocket defense. So two slots

(26:25):
won back in the backfield in the wing t Harrison
under center. Now he goes up again. They've run that
play three straight plays that time, picks up about five yards,
brings up second down. And I saw that Coach Chapman
had gone up to the referee, and I think he
was kind of complaining, Hey, you know, the can they
really push him like that? But like you said, coach,
it's a rule now they can actually push him. Well,

(26:47):
I'll tell you what Coach Chapman was, you know, kind
of not bragging, but telling him that his defensive line
is pretty stout.

Speaker 6 (26:53):
And they do look pretty stout. But I'll tell you what.

Speaker 8 (26:56):
The comments right now are pretty much having their way
with him on a quarterback sneak.

Speaker 2 (27:01):
So let's see if they change it up here and
maybe go outside same formation. Harrison up under center, man
in motion is lust. He takes it around the right
side and he is wrapped up and actually gains a
couple more yards close to the first down, goes out
of bounds at the thirty one yard line.

Speaker 8 (27:19):
Another correction, Gavin Rhodes running back five eight one sixty.
It's hard to tell the difference between the eight and
the zero out there. And since both guys run the football,
that was the wing coming around and there goes Lust
on the outside. So Lust is going to be more
on the outside of split end and Roads is going
to be at the wing.

Speaker 2 (27:40):
Third and short and Rhodes takes it to the right
side up ahead of the twenty and that's another Matthews
Hondiaker first down.

Speaker 8 (27:49):
Yeah, they coach talked about how Rhoades is the second
go to guy in the in the Comet offense, and
he's shown it tonight. That takes a lot of heat
off Harrison. And right now in a couple carries, he's
picked up some nice games and first down for the Comets.

Speaker 2 (28:05):
Eight twenty clock running here in the first period, no
score be a first down and ten at the Rocket
twenty yard line. Rockets just trying to get a stop
and you know, I think Elgin tried to get them
off balance with a couple of passes. But now Elgin
realizing we just need to run the ball, fakes a

(28:28):
toss to Roads, gives it to Van Gundy and jack
Van Gundy up ahead to the fifteen yard line gain
of five.

Speaker 6 (28:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (28:36):
You know we've seen Van Gundy the last couple of
years playing the full back position. He's a really great
blocker and he's just mister steady, wouldn't you say, Eric, Yep,
he just gets the ball and picks up what he can.
In that time, he picked up a nice five yard
gain just on a basic handoff. And that's the thing
about the wing t you're trying to figure out where
the ball's going.

Speaker 2 (28:55):
They may fake the pitch. They may give it to
that up man, fake the pitching and then give it
to the up man. I it to the guy that's
coming around on the on the outside. There's so much
movement this time, counterplay to the left side. Five touchdown Elgin.
That was number twenty eight. Brendan Lukar with a touchdown.

(29:15):
I think it's the twenty eight or twenty Well, they
just the announce they just announced twenty eight.

Speaker 8 (29:20):
Okay, I'll tell you what. You could have drove a
truck through there. You could have cranked up the diesel
through that one and uh, you know anything about the
history of the comets driving that truck through the diesel
in that area.

Speaker 6 (29:32):
Boy, I'll tell you what he faked. A quick pitch,
hit him on the counter, and a big hole there.

Speaker 8 (29:37):
I think the running back was actually surprised that was
that large.

Speaker 2 (29:41):
Yeah, fifteen yard touchdown run makes it six nothing. Now
the handoff for two is no good. So that's where
we're at here in the first period, seven fourteen left
in the first period, Elgin on top six to nothing.
You're listening to high school football and fourteen Wmril.

Speaker 2 (31:36):
Back here at Elgin High School, Elgin with the early
six to nothing lead over Ridgdale from the Matthews Hondaktor
a high School Game of the Week at Eric Moseley
alongside coach John Couzio. Coach Elgin just kind of rammed
it down Bridgdale's throat that first drive. Yeah, they try
to open it up with a pass and then we're
pretty fortunate did get intercepted. But then they went to

(31:58):
what they do the best and keep it on the ground.

Speaker 6 (32:00):
Three.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
Oh oh wow. So Elgin hate to cut you off,
their coach, but go ahead. Elgin literally did a sky
high about ten yard kick and it was just straight
up in the air. One of the front linemen on
that return team just basically tried to camp under it

(32:22):
and catch it and it went right through his hands
and Elgin recovers that. So not an on side kick,
but a kick that's a little tricky there.

Speaker 8 (32:32):
Yeah, it looked like and I kind of I thought
it was Luke Nelson, number forty four, sophomore tight end,
defensive lineman, five eleven one sixth. He was a guy
that made the recovery. But the comments are all down
on one knee right now in respect for injured rocket,
and we're trying to get his number.

Speaker 6 (32:50):
It's a one in.

Speaker 2 (32:51):
A I can't tell if it's a ten or if
it's an eighteen. If it's eighteen, it's Hutter Hutchison. It
is eighteen. Yes, So he got the win knocked out
of him and looks like he is walking off on
his own power.

Speaker 6 (33:03):
Good to see him up and moving.

Speaker 8 (33:06):
And now for the Comets defensively, a Malachi Middleton at
defensive back. Nash Lust will be a defensive back, Quinton Harrison,
who's been playing quarterback, will be a linebacker. Gavin Rhoades
will be a linebacker defensive line. No, they're back, Okay,
I'm gonna go ahead and give their defense anyway. Finn

(33:27):
Van Gundy defensive end. Boston rose Brow a defensive back
Colton long defensive line. So it looks like the Comets
are back on offense here and uh, probably going to
go right at the Rockets to see there's not going
to be a lot of recover. They've got a lot
of guys going both ways. On a day night like tonight,

(33:47):
that could pay dividends for the Comets.

Speaker 2 (33:50):
Hand off on the sweep up ahead to the forty
and to the thirty five, and that looks to be
taking out of bounds at the thirty six yard line,
but a nice gain on first down.

Speaker 8 (34:06):
That's another extra added running back there lining up in
the split end position, coming around on that jet sweep.
And boy, they've got three nice running backs that can
carry the football. Actually four with the young man number
twenty eight, Luke Cart scoring the touchdown. Had off to

(34:26):
Van Gutdy straight ahead up to the thirty and crosses
to the twenty nine yard line. That's Matthew Hondaker, first
down for Van Gundy. Yeah, win in doubt, Keep it simple,
give it to the full back, pick up the first down,
keep the chains moving, keep the clock moving, and go
up a couple of touchdowns and Bridgedale has yet to
have the football, So comments are just taking their time

(34:49):
right now. And the difference in this game so far.
I don't know if you agree, but Elgin seems to
be really crisp.

Speaker 6 (34:57):
Yeah, and.

Speaker 8 (34:59):
They they aren't, you know, no penalties to speak of,
and last year they were penalized quite a bit.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
And Harrison keeps it, cuts it back up, you fake
the handoff to the right, then cut it back up
the middle and down for about a gain of five
to the twenty five yard line. Second down.

Speaker 6 (35:20):
I think it's pretty good strategy.

Speaker 8 (35:22):
Coach Winslow has you take your best running back and
making your quarterback and he gets to touch the ball
every single play instead of putting him a running back.
And he's gonna touch it maybe thirty times a game.
So pretty good strategy so far, paying off for the comments.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
So second down and make it five, Harrison hands it
off to the up back or the deep back and
he gets stopped right at the first down marker. And
that was number eighteen Gavin Rhodes, and I think it's
enough for Matthews Sondak for a first down.

Speaker 8 (36:00):
Gonnaquizy on the formation, you remember what they used to
call that. You get the full back right behind the
quarterback and then another fullback's at fullhouse. Well, no, they
used to call it the Kansas City eye, oh years
and years ago. And then the guy in a tailback
position about eight yards deep. So comments changing up their
formation basically keeping the ball on the ground, picking up

(36:22):
another first down.

Speaker 2 (36:24):
So first and ten at the Ridgedale eighteen yard line,
Harrison hands it off to the right side up ahead
to the fifteen yard line. That's roads again. Second down, Yeah, number.

Speaker 8 (36:37):
Two, we'll try to get some tackles here. We've got
D's Michael D's, linebacker and running back for the Rockets,
making a play. You know, he really is coming into
his own this year. Last year he was really fine
player for him and if you listen to any of
the interviews a coach Chapman, and he really dedicated himself
in the weight room to get in the off season

(36:58):
to make himself even better. So wishing the best of
luck to him for this game and the rest of
the season.

Speaker 2 (37:06):
So second down, and I'd say about seven yards.

Speaker 6 (37:12):
Went unbalanced to the left here.

Speaker 2 (37:15):
Motion man in motion that is Luke Cart who goes
to the outside, A flag comes down. He gets all
the way up to about the five yard line. But
my guess as a hole.

Speaker 8 (37:28):
And Luke Cart's coming around there and there's really nobody
they're doing a good job of blocking on that side,
and if that's the point of attack with the hole,
that's pretty much why he was able to get around there.
But they went unbalanced and I don't believe Ridgdale adjusted
to it.

Speaker 2 (37:44):
No, not at all. And that was a penalty on Elgin.
So that brings it back to the twenty one yard line.
So it remains second down, second in about eleven while
they're saying thirteen. So yeah, if you're tuning in, there's
four thirteen to go in the first quarter and the Comets,

(38:05):
playing at home, are up six to nothing. They were
not successful in their two point conversion second down in
thirteen at the twenty one yard line. Quarterback in shotgun,
he fakes the handoff, now he runs and he is
buried in the backfield first, real big defensive stop there
by Ridgdale.

Speaker 8 (38:25):
Yeah, they look like D's in there on the tackle
and I'm trying to get the other young man's number.
Really fine play, look like number seven Kingston McGarry over
there on that other side and tackling for a loss

(38:46):
there for the Rockets. Nice defensive play.

Speaker 2 (38:48):
Be interesting to see if Elgin lines up, does that
quarterback sneak up under center. It's four down territory here
third and fourteen. Know, they run a counter to the
outside and tackled another flag. That's the second time on
that counter that they've gotten a flag.

Speaker 8 (39:05):
Luke Cart with the carry well ridge Dale was waiting
for at that time, and you know, comments were successful
a couple of times, but Ridgdale made the adjustment and
they also comtment's actually held on that again. And so
one of the things that coach was talking about was
winslow was the fact they had some penalties and some

(39:27):
mental mistakes last week. It kind of cost them the
football game. So they started off pretty strong here and
now they've kind of shot themselves in the foot and
they're forced with about a third and well, it's going
to be over twenty like twenty.

Speaker 2 (39:41):
Five yards to go at least twenty five. Yeah, so
they're saying twenty four. So third and long, Harrison up
under center, He fakes the Luke Cart, rolls to his
right now just drops it off of ahead to Van
Gutti at thirty twenty five to twenty fifteen and he
gets a nice chunk. Still going to be a decent

(40:02):
amount to try to get first down on fourth down,
but made up a ton of it.

Speaker 6 (40:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (40:07):
Aiden Saer, junior free safety, had to make the tackle
picking up a big chunk. Comments, obviously are going to
go for it here? Four down territory. Real nice play call.
They ransom people off in the full back. Nobody covered
him out of the backfield.

Speaker 2 (40:23):
So fourth down in seven, two thirty six in counting
here in the first period, elgend up six to nothing
and Elgin just taking their time, and I'm wondering if
they were going to go ahead and call time out
because they are just literally just taking all their time.
That's interesting. That's really interesting, don't you think.

Speaker 8 (40:45):
Well, I think coach Winslow is smart. He's taking her
time thinking about the play. Fourth down play, not getting
a hurry. They're up six nothing. Ridgdale has yet to
have the football in this game, and you know, take
their chances, call a play and then go on defense
short in the game as much as you can.

Speaker 2 (41:06):
That's true. And that's the way Elgin plays with this
wing tea. It's all about keeping that clock moving and
then this is probably more passing than we would have
ever expected to see out of Elgin tonight.

Speaker 6 (41:18):
Okay, we have a score here.

Speaker 2 (41:21):
Hope Will allowed and up over Pleasant eight to nothing
here in the first period.

Speaker 6 (41:25):
Yeah, that's right next door.

Speaker 8 (41:28):
And you know, Pleasant to playing somebody that's perennially in
the playoffs and has a program, and that's what they
wanted to do. So looks like it could be a
really good football game over at Pleasant tonight. It's up
eight nothing, so Elgin will allowed fourth and seven at
the fifth original fifteen yard line. And for Ridgdale having

(41:51):
not gotten the ball on offense yet, you know, giving
up the long touchdown drive in the first possession, this
would be a huge stop and maybe turn the momentum
a little bit if they can get to stop here. Yeah,
there's no question about that. They had the miss Q
on the kickoff and gave the Comets a great field
position and that kind of gets you sitting back on

(42:13):
your heels, and their defense haven't hasn't left the field yet,
and and they're just waiting to get the hands on
the football.

Speaker 2 (42:21):
Play here up under center, he rolls out to his left.

Speaker 6 (42:24):
He's chased.

Speaker 2 (42:25):
Now, throwback across the field and oh, wide open, miss
Barrett Helms. The ball kind of got laid up there.
It was lobbed up, but Helms all by himself and
it was just a little bit too much pressure. Threw
his hands turnover on downs to the Rockets.

Speaker 8 (42:41):
I think he was trying to throw it to lust
who was actually getting face guarded in the end zone
and there was contact down in the corner and the
Helms came from the middle and like you say, he just,
you know, just dropped it.

Speaker 6 (42:52):
He was wide open.

Speaker 8 (42:54):
Could have been a touchdown, big break for the Rockets here.
And we're gonna get to see what they're made here
on offense to try to get this thing going offensively
for the Rockets.

Speaker 6 (43:05):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (43:06):
We got Cayden Daniel at receiver, Michael D's will be
a running back, quarterback, Brydon Townsend senior receiver, Aiden Sawyer slaughterback,
JJ Slaughterback as a receiver, Evan Ricketts receiver. How do
you how do you have that many receivers? Hunter hutcheson
full back and I'm just reading off the coaches notes here,

(43:28):
guard Michael Justice and we'll get the rest of them
here after this play.

Speaker 2 (43:32):
D's in the backfield with Townsend shotgun. Two wide receivers
on each side. Townsend three step drop. Now he takes
it up ahead and he is sacked. The line collapsed
on him quite quickly. Loss on that play, it.

Speaker 8 (43:46):
Was Colton long defensive end five to seven five for
the comments, remember him from last year.

Speaker 6 (43:51):
He's very active player.

Speaker 19 (43:53):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (43:54):
Brody Foults will be at the other guard, Jamison Potts
will be center, Lake Mitchell tackle, and Paul Edwards Woodward
will be a tackle.

Speaker 2 (44:07):
So second down and make it about thirteen for the Rockets.
Now I'm up under center. Is Townsend I backfield? They
hand to D's. D's goes to his left and is
tackled right away. No gain on that one.

Speaker 8 (44:22):
Third down looks like jumping up from that one is
UH fifty one and.

Speaker 6 (44:29):
That's a very good player.

Speaker 8 (44:32):
Landon Shepherd six two ninety and I couldn't get the
second UH player will try to get their numbers here.

Speaker 2 (44:42):
Now and we'll say, looking at how the comments are
lined up right now. On defense, they're playing two really
deep safety. You don't usually see high school run two
safeties that deep. Now, four wide receivers on this side,
one on the other side townshend alone in the backfield.
A swing pass the outside that's completed up to the
ten makes a man miss and tackled at about the

(45:05):
thirteen or fourteen yard line. And I believe that was
Aiden Saler.

Speaker 6 (45:13):
I believe no number zero.

Speaker 8 (45:15):
Oh that's a Cayden Daniel and really hit hard by
number fifty one, covering a lot of ground landing. Shepherd
got from one side of the other on that and uh,
I thought that young man got the wind knocked out
him a little bit. He kind of stood up and
kind of but he's okay, jogging off the officials making

(45:35):
him go out for one play.

Speaker 2 (45:37):
So that's three and out for the Rockets, twenty nine
seconds left in the first period, elging up six to nothing,
and they will receive this punt back to receive it
as number ten Nash alust and punting will be. Is
that Aiden Saler I believe is punting for the Rockets.

Speaker 6 (46:02):
That's number twelve. Yes, you're right, Aiden Salier.

Speaker 2 (46:06):
He's set up at about the two yard line and
he's not quite but he does get it off. Not
a bad kick, A little short get away from that
one that bounces at the thirty one rolls up to
the thirty and is down out of bounds at about
the twenty seven yard line. So good field position again
for the Commets.

Speaker 8 (46:25):
Well, right now the Rockets are playing on their heels
and they've got the goalpost right to their backs, and
Comets have all the momentum. But they're going to change
the ends of the field and they're going to be
going from right to left instead of left to right.

Speaker 2 (46:41):
So that's the end of the first period. Elgin with
the lead six to nothing over Ridgdale. We'll take a
break and we'll come back with the start of the
second period. You're listening to high school football in fourteen
ninety WMR.

Speaker 2 (48:00):
Back here at Elgin High School. First and ten. Here
at the beginning of the second period, Elgin up on
top six to nothing Roads, Roads for a five yard gain.
Second down, Now a sweep to the outside up to
the twenty fifteen ten and tackled at about the seven
yard line. That's Brendan Lucar for the Matthews Hontaker a

(48:22):
first down. Yeah, Carments are wasting no time coming to
the left side again. That's your favorite spot with Luke
Caart coming around from the wing position. First and goal.
Actually at the nine yard line. Now a quarterback keeper
a scrum up the middle gets it up to about
the three yard line.

Speaker 6 (48:38):
Second down. I think they sense it.

Speaker 8 (48:39):
They've got the Rockets on a run here and they're
hurrying up no huddle, get up to the line and
trying to force Ridgdale to call time out.

Speaker 2 (48:48):
And I believe that's what they did. As Ridgdale does well,
I don't know because Chapman is discussing something with the referee,
so I don't know what what he's discussing. It was
not a time out and water boy went out there

(49:13):
and he's got to run right back off for the Commets.
So second down and goal from the three yard line
up the line of scrimmage is elgind Harrison up under center,
Ben Gundhy in the backfield. Now hands off on the
sweeping up the middle for the touchdown. That's number eighteen

(49:34):
Gavin Rhodes for the comments. So that makes the score
twelve to nothing. Elgin on top.

Speaker 8 (49:42):
That's what happens when you get a short field to
go playing good field position, there's kind of a bad punt.
Comments taking over inside the thirty yard line with a
few plays and punching it in up twelve nothing, eleven
eleven to go.

Speaker 6 (49:56):
We just got another score from over.

Speaker 8 (49:58):
At Pleasant I looks like they've tied it up eight
eight with eight forty one to go in the second
two point conversion.

Speaker 2 (50:06):
Try here for the comments. Harrison under center hands it
to Rhodes, runs at the outside, nobody there, and he
takes it in. Two point conversion is good and that
will make the score. Here at Elgin Elgin fourteen, ridge
Dale nothing. We'll take a break. We'll come back with
more of the second period. Here at Elgin, you're listening

(50:27):
to high school football on fourteen ninety Wmrin.

Speaker 2 (51:38):
Back here at Elgin High School. Elgin extends their lead
fourteen to nothing over Ridge Dale eleven eleven left in
the second period, Ridgel takes the ball at the thirty
and up ahead to the thirty three yard line. That
was Caden Daniel and that's where the Rockets will take
over first and ten.

Speaker 8 (51:55):
Yeah, you know, we want to make a little correction here.
That was a nationalist on the two point conversion. Really
did a nice job showing his speed to get through
the end zone and helping the comments go up fourteen
to nothing. One of the things, Eric, I want to mention,
the comments just seem like they're a lot more physical,
would you say.

Speaker 2 (52:11):
Yeah, a lot like it was last year, not necessarily.
I don't think it's as hard hitting as it was
last year, especially the defense, but they definitely are using
a lot of muscle right now in that front line,
which for Ridgdale on the defensive side, is one of
their strengths. It seems like Elgin is winning that battle
on the front line.

Speaker 8 (52:30):
Yeah, And when your defense is showing a lot of
strength and they're very aggressive, that you're playing with a
lot of confidence. And right now the Rockets have their
backs against the wall here. Down fourteen to nothing in
the second quarter.

Speaker 2 (52:44):
First and ten for the Rockets, Townsend hands it to
D's and he takes it up ahead and gets about
a gain of one maybe two yards, brings up second down.

Speaker 8 (52:56):
Yeah, the comments really hit by the come up about
four guys making the tackle. Harrison coming up from his
safety position was in on the tackle as well as
three or four of his buddy. So it's really making
the Rockets work for every yard that tyke there that
they're going to earn tonight.

Speaker 2 (53:15):
And I think the Rockets, especially in the skilled positions,
have some speed, but they just can't take advantage of
it right now because the defensive front for Elgin is
just breaking through so quick it's making it difficult. Three
are yeah, three wide receivers up top, one down here
near us Townsend in the backfield with D's back to

(53:39):
past Towns and he's going deep, airing it out and
just behind the intended receiver that was Evan Ricketts And
that's a third down.

Speaker 8 (53:48):
Nash Lust really nice coverage there, and I think the
quarterback was hit on the play just as he was
braiding Townsend. Tall kid, he also plays defensive end, has
a pretty good arm, but I think he was bumped
a little bit and kind of rainbowed out there and
the ball actually went a little bit out of bounds

(54:09):
so nobody could catch it.

Speaker 2 (54:11):
It would seem like for Ridgdale right now they've got
to try to complete some sort of quick pass because
they just don't have much time to set up for anything.
Three wide receivers up top, one down here Townsend back pass.
Now he rolls out to his left looking, he throws
it and it is complete. Is it a catch? No?
Out of bounds? But a great job there by Caden

(54:34):
Daniel to try to get his feet down for the completion.

Speaker 8 (54:38):
Wow, that was a hit on the quarterback and it
must be Evidently he thought it was simultaneous. As he
was releasing the ball, the quarterback's helmet flew off, and
he's going to have to go out. Townsend's going to
have to go out for a play boy. That was
really really close for being a penalty there.

Speaker 2 (55:00):
Sal you're back to punt back to receive his number thirteen.
Quentin Harrison sow, you're set up at his twenty three
yard line, snap his back and double clutches. He actually,

(55:21):
I think he thought it was going to get blocked.

Speaker 6 (55:24):
Just get away from it.

Speaker 2 (55:25):
And then and Richdale downs that. You could tell he
it didn't come back to him real quick, and he
started his first couple steps and I think he thought
somebody was breaking through, double clutched it, then went ahead
and kicked it. So again, comments with really good field
position first and ten.

Speaker 8 (55:42):
Yeah, right now the game has slowed down for him.
They're in control, nine forty nine to go, and we'll
see what type of plays the coach calls. They're up
fourteen to nothing. Really kind of an anemic rocket offense tonight,
and that was pretty much caused by the aggressive play
by the Common defense.

Speaker 2 (56:04):
Some scores right now, Mohawk up over Carnington thirteen to nothing,
Upper Sandusky seven, Mount Gilliad six, Madison up over River
Valley seven to nothing, and Pleasant and Hope will allowd
and tied at eight. And now they've switched quarterback again.
But the handoff ends up going to number eighteen Roads

(56:25):
and he gets ahead up to the first down marker
at the forty and that is enough for Matthew Tondaker
first down. But now Zach Bauer's in at quarterback and
they move Harrison back to running back.

Speaker 8 (56:37):
Yeah, he's gonna switch it up a little bit. That's
a smart move. Give Bauers some experience here. He's only
a sophomore, and I will say, a second game of season,
you're considered only a sophomore. So they're trying to get
him going. I think they just used Quinton Harrison just
to kind of get the lead here, and now they're
gonna let Buyers go to work.

Speaker 2 (56:58):
Harrison takes the handoff on the sweep up ahead to
the thirty six yard line, a gain of about four
brings up second down.

Speaker 8 (57:06):
Looks like D's on the tackle at number thirty. Try
to get some of these names. Britain Potcutter only a
freshman but tell you what, he's a stout young man
playing linebacker for the Rockets, and just last year he
was playing junior high football. So welcome to high school football.

Speaker 6 (57:25):
Young man.

Speaker 2 (57:27):
Lust comes out of the game. Finn Van Gundy comes
in and what is this called?

Speaker 6 (57:34):
Coach the Kansas City.

Speaker 2 (57:39):
And handoff goes to Harrison behind two blockers up to
the thirty now cuts it back twenty five and takes
a few olive ball comes out but is taken up
by the Comets. So I lost a couple of yards there,
but still good enough for Matthew Tondaker first down for
the Comets.

Speaker 8 (57:55):
I was just gonna say, what coach Winslow wants to
do right now to finish this half is keep the
ball on the ground, keep the clock moving, and play
clean football, no fumbles, no penalties.

Speaker 2 (58:07):
So first and ten at the Ridgedale twenty four yard
line again Elgin with the fourteen to nothing lead, eight
to nineteen left until halftime, Van Gundy behind the quarterback,
Harrison back behind him, handoff goes straight ahead to Van
Gundy and he gets to the twenty yard line a

(58:30):
beast of a carry for about five yards. Second down.

Speaker 6 (58:34):
Yeah, mister steady right up the middle.

Speaker 8 (58:36):
I'll tell you he's a workhorse in there at full back,
plays great defense, and he's the kind of guy you
want on your football team.

Speaker 2 (58:45):
So Rockets are going to take a time out, we
will as well. Seven fifty four left until halftime, Elgin
on top, fourteen to nothing. You're listening to high school

The Matthews Honda Acura High School Game of the Week.

Speaker 2 (01:00:02):
Out for the swing pass and taken right away and
actually really lucky to catch that. That was to Quentin Harrison.
No gain on it, but the defender was right there
when that ball arrived.

Speaker 8 (01:00:18):
He that was Kingston McGarry number seven, and then Brayden
Townsend came in to make to clean it up.

Speaker 6 (01:00:24):
At the end.

Speaker 8 (01:00:24):
But you're right, he was very lucky to catch that football.
Otherwise you know Rockets are going to get it back,
but they needed a big play at that point. So
the comments are a third and a very managable five
yard line on nineteen.

Speaker 2 (01:00:39):
Up under center is Bowers. He pitches it out to Harrison,
runs to the right and he is stopped. Now a
penalty flag and they're saying that he was down, but
a hold is going to bring that back.

Speaker 6 (01:00:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (01:00:59):
Evan Ricketts was the young man on the play number
fifteen for the Rockets, and the offender of that hold
was kind of down around his legs, I believe in
grabbing onto his legs. So Rickets did a nice job
of turning him back and they're going to really benefit
from that hole. Now it's going to be third and
long for the Comets.

Speaker 2 (01:01:20):
Be third and it would appear to be about sixteen,
maybe seventeen or the comments, but they showed on a
previous drive that's not really much of a problem for them.

Speaker 15 (01:01:31):
No.

Speaker 8 (01:01:32):
Seven oh seven to go up fourteen to nothing. They're
in control right now, balling the Rockets territory once again
on about the thirty one yard line.

Speaker 2 (01:01:43):
Ours still in a quarterback. He's up under center, split backfield,
Harrison and Van Gundy. One ride receiver down here slot
on the right and Harrison takes it. But again a
flag comes in from across the field and that's right
in the area of hold again and.

Speaker 6 (01:01:59):
That was it's number fifty one.

Speaker 8 (01:02:01):
Michael Justice, he also plays guard defensive tackle. Young man's
on a lot of plays and I think listening to
coach Chapman. He was injured last year, wasn't he, Eric, Yes,
and he's come back strong, and we're really glad to
see the young man out there.

Speaker 2 (01:02:19):
So moving back even further so be third down back
at the Ridgedale forty one yard line, third and twenty six.
But again, Elgin was in that situation before they threw
just a little screen pass really till the full back

(01:02:40):
was able to get a big chunk of it hours
up under center, hands off on the sweep and tackled
at the forty that's Gavin Rhodes on the carry. Maybe
a gain of one fourth down.

Speaker 8 (01:02:54):
That was real fine play by Braydon Townsend as a
defensive end, stringing it out and having to make the
tackle by himself. And I'll tell you what, that was
really nice play by the young man to get out
there and keep outside leverage and make the tackle.

Speaker 2 (01:03:09):
So that's a big, big stop for the Rockets. They
haven't been able to stop Elgin much tonight, but that
time on that series did a very nice job. And
seemingly Elgin is punting, yes, so they're setting up for
the punt back to receive. Is Caden Daniel and JJ slaughterback,

(01:03:36):
snap comes back, and now Harrison's taking it himself, and
now he decides to kick it.

Speaker 6 (01:03:41):
Not a good kick.

Speaker 2 (01:03:44):
And it goes sideways and oh man, so late Daniel
comes running through there, and I think he thought slaughter
Beck was going to pick it up and he was
going to deliver a block, but that ball almost just
bounced up and hit him.

Speaker 8 (01:04:00):
You got to be aware of what's going on. I
believe Harrison was running to his left. He's also a
left footed kicker, so it is a really nice call
there to avoid getting a I don't believe he was
gonna he was actually gonna run the fake because they
were probaly too much down and this.

Speaker 2 (01:04:16):
And you do it just to see, yeah, let's see
if it opens up and he's a good enough runner
that if it does happen, because you're hoping, hey, these
guys are just going to drop back. Yeah I have room.

Speaker 8 (01:04:27):
Now he's running to the short side of the field,
which is kind of tough, but really, you know, they
the comments pick up about twenty some yards on that
particular play just by doing that instead of giving them
an opportunity to maybe running back. So real nice play there.
Comments will be on defense again, Rockets on their own eighteen.

Speaker 2 (01:04:47):
So first and ten for the Rockets at their own
eighteen yard line. Townsend the shotgun almost drops it now,
swings it out to Daniel and he gets it up
ahead positive yards zero and Daniel slow to get up,

(01:05:07):
maybe a gain of two knocking down.

Speaker 8 (01:05:10):
And that was Harrison, and it looked like fifteen was
in there. That was land In Lavalet, then young man
that was honored before the game. And fifty one. He's
on a lot of plays. That's Landon Shepherd six to one,
and he's all over the place. They have him listed
as a Yeah, they have him listed as a Linebackery's

(01:05:31):
inside Linebackery played there last year and the year before that.
He's just a just a solid player. If you want
to start a defense, you're going to start it with Landing.

Speaker 2 (01:05:41):
So second down and eight, pickup of two Townsend and
the shotgun hands the ball off and nowhere to go.
And I didn't even see who was running that. It
might have been slaughter Back or sallyar and tell who
it was. Actually no Hunter Hutchison running the ball there.

(01:06:04):
So third down that's a loss.

Speaker 8 (01:06:06):
Actually, yeah, right now you've got a lot of doubt
in the Rockets offensive line because Elgin's defensive line is
really pushing him back. And we'll have to acknowledge those guys.
And that's Finn van Gundy number twenty five. We've already
mentioned number fifteen, la Vale, number sixty six, Drew Brown

(01:06:27):
at the nose. I'll tell you these guys are really
pushing back here.

Speaker 2 (01:06:30):
Townsend rolling to his right now, throws it to slaughter
Beck and just off his hands and that would have
been up close enough to maybe get the first down.
It wasn't a great pass, but it did hit his hands,
brings up fourth down.

Speaker 8 (01:06:42):
Yeah, and Lust was right there on the defense in
pretty good coverage. But like you said, it was a
very high pass. And now the Commets, with three point
fifty four to go up fourteen in the second quarter,
have an opportunity to put more points on the board.

Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
Ridgedale, looking to punt from their own twenty two punter
is set up at the five. That's Salar. I believe
punt is off. It's a high kick and comes down
at the thirty six and rolls back to the thirty

(01:07:21):
and actually down at the thirty one. So Comets again,
really good field position to start this possession three forty
five till halftime, looking to add to their lead.

Speaker 8 (01:07:32):
Yeah, the Comets have got to look up when the
ball's coming, especially if it's a short kick, so it
doesn't accidentally hit them, and they just need to get away.
No one really needs to get close to that football.
Could have really hurt them if they would have got
hit with the ball. But right now Comets on the
thirty one yard line knocking on the door once again.

(01:07:53):
Three forty five to go in the second quarter.

Speaker 2 (01:07:57):
So Comets set up at the thirty one yard line
first and ten Bowers hands it off to Van Gundy
who goes straight ahead up to the twenty and barrels
through to about the fifteen. That's a Matthews Hondaker first
down run.

Speaker 8 (01:08:15):
Hey win in doubt, go to your base wing t offense,
double tight end wing and run the football right up
the middle. And that's what the comments are doing. I
think coach Winslow is smelling the smelling the goal line
right now with his team, and they just want to
get one right before another one before the half and
go up twenty one to nothing.

Speaker 2 (01:08:36):
First and ten at the seventeen, Bowers hands it to
Van Gundy again. He gets to the right, tries to
break through two defenders, just gets tossed down. No gain there,
brings up second down.

Speaker 8 (01:08:46):
It's time to go outside with harrisoner one of the
other guy's roads or lost. They've run Van Gundy twice
up the middle. They're setting something up here, maybe on
the counter. The counter has been good to him, coming
especially to this left side.

Speaker 2 (01:09:00):
Well, I know that coach Winslow has mentioned he wants
to be able to use play action and this would
be a great place to do that, but we've seen
they haven't really been able to use it yet. Maybe
this is that opportunity to do it. But I agree
with you, coach. If they can get it to Harrison
to the outside, that should be a key and one
of the double wings double wing and archer Johnston with

(01:09:23):
the carry there and another flag and that will be
a hold more than likely. And it is so really
Elgin has moved the ball. Well, the Rockets have had
a few good stops, but the thing that's been stopping Elgin,
which was the case in week one, is the penalties.

Speaker 8 (01:09:45):
Yeah, it looks like Drew Brown, who also plays noseguard,
he's only a sophomore six foot one fifty is in
the game and he's going in at line and line position.
One of the comments lineman came out and he might
have been the culprit on a couple of the hold
so we're going to give him a break. And this

(01:10:05):
time comments once again are going to the double wing
one back set.

Speaker 2 (01:10:11):
Second down and long. This one goes to Brennan Lukart
and he's tackled in the backfield and another loss there,
So third down and long.

Speaker 8 (01:10:22):
I'll tell you if the Comets have a double reverse
in their repertoire of plays, this would be a good
time to run one, because everybody from the Rockets there's
flying over here to the side on that particular play.
Because the Comets have been very good of picking up
a lot of yards. They picked up a touchdown on
that play, and if they would just run something back

(01:10:42):
in the other direction misdirection, it could be there. Because
I don't believe anybody's staying at home on the backside.

Speaker 2 (01:10:49):
Third and twenty two ball is at the Ridgedale twenty
nine yard line, and I would think Ridgdale gets to
stop here, maybe take a time out. Man in motion.
Now they hand it off on the counter up ahead
to the twenty, cuts it up the middle fifteen and
down at the twelve yard line and Luke Art with

(01:11:12):
the carry there, so makes it a manageable fourth down.

Speaker 8 (01:11:15):
Yeah, it wasn't a double reverse, but it was a
counter and on the inside they really did a nice
job of blocking. They've got the Rockets really flying to
the play side on fakes and they're if they're watching
the backs, the backs are going to lie to you.
The linemen are going to tell you the truth. So
that time the Comets picked up a really nice.

Speaker 2 (01:11:35):
Game and hand off on the counter here up ahead
to the five and into the end zone.

Speaker 6 (01:11:41):
Touchdown.

Speaker 2 (01:11:42):
That is Brennan Lucart, and we.

Speaker 8 (01:11:46):
Knew nothing about him coming into this game, and he's
really coming on to his own. He's kind of a
tall kid, it seems, you know, twenty eight at six
two one seventy five and he's coming around in that
wing position and just kind of loping.

Speaker 6 (01:12:00):
Down through there.

Speaker 8 (01:12:01):
That time he went on the inside counter once again
and they only needed five yards and he got all
they needed for a touchdown fifty six seconds to go.

Speaker 6 (01:12:09):
Commet's up twenty to nothing.

Speaker 2 (01:12:12):
So back to kick is Elgin. Kick is up and
kick is good and that is freshman kicker Bailey Abbott.
She is uh five six, one hundred and thirty pounds
and she gets the extra point and gives the Commas
a twenty one to nothing lead.

Speaker 8 (01:12:33):
I'll tell you I was watching her before the game
and she was really kicking him through. I'm really glad
Coach Winslow decided to go to that and he'd getting
back on track. They're up twenty one to nothing, fifty
six seconds to go in the half. Right now, the
Commets at home are looking really strong.

Speaker 2 (01:12:49):
They absolutely are. So we're only about fifty six seconds
till halftime, and we'll take a break during halftime, then
Coach and I will go over the first half update
scores and then obviously our weekly question for coach. Right
now at halftime, hope will Allowding up fifteen to eight

(01:13:12):
over pleasant, So what have a lot of other scores
for you guys? Again Here at Elgin, Elgin on top,
twenty one to nothing, under a minute left until the half.
Ridgedale will get the ball first in the second half.
Back to kick is Jack van Gundy. He gets it out,

(01:13:37):
rolls up to Daniel, he cuts it up the middle,
up to the thirty five forty out to the outside
and just gets tackled by Luke Cart. Luke Cart doesn't
stop him. He is off to the races.

Speaker 8 (01:13:52):
And with forty eight seconds to go, the Rockets have
pretty good field position here, they have an opportunity.

Speaker 6 (01:13:59):
Looks like they've got him man.

Speaker 2 (01:14:00):
Down and I think that is Daniel. He got thrown
down pretty hard. And just to go back on that
extra point. You know, most people don't make a big
deal about an extra point, but number one, Bailey Abbott.
You know, she's a freshman, she's a girl on the
football team and here at Elgin, I'm guessing she probably

(01:14:24):
had played soccer growing up. At Elgin there is no
soccer team and so it's nice to see she's found
an outlet to be able to do something that she
probably loves.

Speaker 8 (01:14:33):
Yeah, there's no question, I tell you the form the
soccer style kicker. Before the game, we noticed that she
was really putting them through there, and coach Winslow is
going to utilize her throughout this whole season.

Speaker 2 (01:14:49):
So again, Kayden Daniel up taking off the field.

Speaker 8 (01:14:55):
Yeah, they can't afford to lose him. He's been very
active this evening number Z. He plays wide receiver and
cornerback for the Rockets. So now for the Rockets, you
get the ball first in the second half, you know,
maybe try to run something that can pick up a chunk.
But right now you're just kind of wanting to get
into halftime and probably regroup. Well, you definitely don't want

(01:15:21):
to throw an interception, get a pick six or something
like that. But it looks like the Rockets are going to
stay spread out with Towns and a quarterback back there.
He's got a nice arm. They can give him some time,
and they've got a couple receivers with some pretty good
speed if they can get behind And I know talking
to someone before the game that the Comets had a

(01:15:42):
couple missed assignments last week where the Cartington receivers were
able to get behind him.

Speaker 2 (01:15:48):
Handoff off to slaughter Back on the sweep and he's
tackled about five yards deep in the backfield second down.

Speaker 8 (01:15:55):
Yeah, it looks like number fifteen was in there, and
that's Lavalle defensive tackle. Defensive line fifty one is all
over the place. That's Landon Shepherd in this left side
thirty two. We talked about him a lot. That's Colton
long defensive end. Here comes number twenty five in finnvan Gundy.

(01:16:21):
He's a defensive lineman. These guys are really really active,
the linebackers and the other Van Gundy number forty five.

Speaker 6 (01:16:27):
They really have a nose for football.

Speaker 2 (01:16:31):
Second down and fifteen two seconds left, townsend back to pass.
Now he just steps up, throws it across the middle
and oh, just out of slaughter Beck's hands and he's
hit a little late, but not enough for it to
be a late hitting. Now, Quintin Harrison being held back,

(01:16:52):
he threw his helmet down.

Speaker 8 (01:16:54):
There's no there wasn't anything really happened there. The kid
hit him, the ball was already gone and evidently met.

Speaker 6 (01:17:07):
Harrison took offense to it. And that's the half.

Speaker 2 (01:17:12):
Yep, that's the half. Slaughter Beck got hit and the
defender was coming pretty strong, but it I don't think
it was anything dirty. And then you know, people get
a little fired up. Now Coach Chapman really fired up
and yelling at the referees. And now a penalty flag
on coach Chapman because he came out on the field

(01:17:33):
to the referees yelling, So they're telling him to get
to the sideline. Coach Chapman's got to calm down, and.

Speaker 8 (01:17:40):
He's got to calm down because if he gets another one,
he won't get to play next week.

Speaker 6 (01:17:45):
That's coach Chapman.

Speaker 8 (01:17:46):
So hopefully I think he'll cool down and get his
team regroup coming. What happened was the young man from
Ridgdale came to the slaughter Becks defense. Yeah, and he
hit one of the uh Elgin kids, but not you know,
just bumped them and then pretty soon everybody was sort
of kind of gathering around. It was a lot less

(01:18:07):
than what people are making it out to be.

Speaker 6 (01:18:09):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (01:18:10):
So that's the end of the first half. Elgin on top,
twenty one to nothing. So we'll take a break. When
we come back, we'll recap some of the first half
and also go over area scores and preview the second half.
But again, Elgin up twenty one to nothing over Ridgedale.

Halftime here at Elgin High School. The Matthews Honda High

twenty one to nothing. I'm Eric Mosley alongside coach John Cuzio.

Knox twelve, Winford six, Ontario and center Berg. It says
are tied at zero's. But I have a hard time

(01:30:10):
believing that. So let's see if I can find that
one out. Galleon up seven to nothing over Carry, Madison
up to fourteen to nothing over River Valley, Ashland twenty five,
Harding seven. That's in the second period. Northmore South Central

(01:30:39):
is tied at nothing, but I believe that's just a
score that has not been updated. Dalton up twenty seven
to thirteen over Highland triad and but Cyrus tied at six,
and Gibsonburg up big over Seneca East forty two to
twenty one eight to thirty five, Buckeye Central zero, Heath fourteen,

(01:31:02):
Buckeye Valley seven, Carl Crawford forty eight, Richmond Heights zero.
So that's just a rundown of the scores that we
have currently. And the score here at Elgin again twenty

Speaker 2 (01:32:33):
Back here at Elgin High School halftime again, Elgin up
twenty one to nothing over Ridgedale, Eric Moseley alongside coach
John Cuzio, and right now we're enjoying, enjoying the Elgin
band as they are out here performing right now. Just
recap the scoring here all Elgin. First quarter at the

(01:32:57):
seven to fourteen mark, fifteen yard touchdo down run by
Brennan Luhart, two point conversion was no good, made the
score Elgin six, Ridgdale nothing. Then the second period at
the eleven eleven mark, it was a three yard touchdown
run by Rhodes and a two point conversion by Lust
made the score Elgin fourteen, Ridgdale nothing. And then fifty

(01:33:22):
six seconds left until halftime, a fifteen yard touchdown run
by Brennan Lukart. The pat kick was good by Bailey
Abbott and that's what got us to the twenty one
nothing mark here against Ridgdale and coach Elgin just seemingly
moving the ball at will. But there have been a

(01:33:43):
few times that they've stalled a little bit, but really
more so than not because they've shot themselves in the foot.

Speaker 8 (01:33:50):
Yeah, right now, the strength and they've got the numbers
on Ridgdale as far as subs and that type of thing,
and they've got Ridge, you Knowdale right off the bat.
We're basically playing defense the whole first quarter and the
offense didn't ever get a chance to get on track.

Speaker 6 (01:34:07):
But Elgin right now is just out.

Speaker 8 (01:34:09):
Hitting them and they're showing a lot of strength and
a lot of physicality to the Rockets.

Speaker 2 (01:34:16):
And Ridgdale looking to just regroup at halftime. There was
a couple times where some of their players seemed to
get up slowly. I didn't see anybody that maybe was
on the field a little bit longer after they came out.
I didn't see none of any of them not come
back in, so that's a good thing. But it's it's
been a lot more physical for Ridgdale than it was

(01:34:38):
last week for sure.

Speaker 8 (01:34:39):
Yeah, there's no question. This heat isn't really good for anybody,
whether you have the subs or not. But it's cool
down in just a little bit. But you know for
those players out on the field, you know Elgin was
out on the field but went around five point fifteen
and full gear, warming up and warming up. They really
need to warm up because it was already warn But yeah,

(01:35:01):
right now they're just playing their game. They're going to
their Uh you know the thing that wasn't that when
they lined up and went for a third and long
they just ran the quarterback sneak and picked up about
fifteen yards on that And uh, it's just they're just
out being out physical with Ridgdale.

Speaker 2 (01:35:19):
So again we're at twenty one to nothing here at halftime.
Elegin on top. Now our weekly question for coach, and
I'm trying I'm to the point now we've done this
now for at least three years. I'm trying not to
repeat questions, but this could be one we've done before.
But if we did, it's been a long time. But
this is more about memories. And obviously you've heard us

(01:35:43):
talk a lot about our connections to Elgin. We both
also have connections to Ridgdale. Coach's wife was a teacher
there for many many years. I coached over at Ridgdale
for a few years, so we have ties to both
of these teams. So, coach, I just wanted to ask,
you know, what are some of the memories you have
of coaching against Ridgdale. Uh, you know, you were in

(01:36:06):
the Elgin system for years and then you were an
assistant at Pleasant, so you you coached against Ridgdale for
a long time. What are some of your memories of
coaching against Ridgdale.

Speaker 8 (01:36:17):
Well, you know, we knew a lot of the kids
because my wife had him in class when they were
in second and third grade, and a lot of really
great families over there, and we made a lot of friends,
and matter of fact, you know, not to avoid your question,
but uh, I texted my wife and asked her what
she was doing tonight. She knew I was coming over
to do the Elgin Ridgdale game, and she said, I

(01:36:39):
don't know, but I hope it's a tie. And so
that's that's a pretty good answer there. But you know,
we we've had some really good games. I can remember
one game we were down uh one score and just
had not a lot of time on the clock. Uh,
back with the court Hamilton Days and those guys and
and we it's like lesson, I don't know, less than

(01:37:01):
a minute to go. And we tried out our two
minute offense and it worked out and went down and
scored and beat them. And really some tough, some tough
matchups there along the way, because when you're playing against people,
you know, there's a lot of emotion involved. If you're
playing against people you don't know, you just you know
you're playing football. When you add in that emotion and

(01:37:21):
make sometimes it makes it even tougher. So yeah, I
remember just a lot of you know, the fields that
was the fields over there at Ridgdale and the Richmonds
and those kids. Those guys just really were great athletes
and good kids that we played against. And uh, I

(01:37:43):
remember a game here where we they kicked tried to
kick a field goal and we picked it up and
took it all the way back for a touchdown.

Speaker 6 (01:37:53):
But we had an Inadverton whistle and that was one
of the games.

Speaker 8 (01:37:57):
And I can't remember where I put my glasses from
I wall it, but I somehow I remember that.

Speaker 6 (01:38:02):
And they tried it again and and and I don't know.

Speaker 8 (01:38:06):
I can't remember if they made it or missed it,
but it was one of those things where dag gone
if they referee, we got penalized. The kid missed the
field goal, but yet we got penalized to give him
another chance. But those are the kind of things that
you remember, and many many games with Ridge Dale as
well as all the other teams that we played against,
and I just my hat goes off to all of

(01:38:27):
these coaches. Coach Chapman's doing a well of a job
over there, and he's got numbers this year and right
now the comments are, you know, be playing a lot
better than they are tonight. But I'm sure the Rockets
will get straightened out. But we got a whole second
half to go. And I don't know if I answered
your question, but we well that's memory. We have a
lot of memories, a lot of close games, and what

(01:38:51):
about a lot of emotions.

Speaker 2 (01:38:52):
What about the eighty eight playoff team, Richdale upset them
in the regular season, almost like we didn't even expect it,
right at Ridgdale, if I remember right, And that was
Jim Oyster coaching that team.

Speaker 8 (01:39:06):
Yeah, Coach Witter was the head coach. I was an assistant,
and uh we were at that time, I believe we
were one and two and we went to Riverdale and
then we strung like seven in a row and went
eight one and one or something like that to get
to play Columbus Academy in the playoff game. And uh well,

(01:39:28):
those were those were good memories, I'll tell you. And
Coach Oyster, he's actually from my hometown in Newcomberland, West Virginia,
went to Oaklenn the same school I did, and also
the same college. You brought his name up, So I'd
like to give a shout out to him wherever you are, coach,
And uh just a really got great guy.

Speaker 6 (01:39:45):
You know, went to was in the service of Vietnam.

Speaker 2 (01:39:49):
And uh got a little sniff of the NFL.

Speaker 8 (01:39:51):
Yeah, oh yeah, he's was a kicker for Fairmont and
that is where I went to school. And uh so,
isn't that funny you come all this way up here
from West Virginia and you you're coaching against guys And
I believe he even started the wrestling program. Oyster family
at Oak Glenn High School in West Virginia was a
really big wrestling family. And uh so, anyway, shout out

(01:40:15):
to him and yeah, Ridgdale really really a lot of great.

Speaker 6 (01:40:20):
People over there.

Speaker 2 (01:40:20):
Well, and you mentioned some of those names at Ridgdale Fields.
Richmond's you know, my days coaching. I was a middle
school coach, but it was right at the beginning of
the Doug Green years, and so I had Jeff Thiel
in middle school, I had Richie Collins, I had you know,
just all these guys had Michael Richmond when he was

(01:40:41):
in middle school. And it was neat to see because
before then Ridgdale hadn't had a lot of success in football.
They were always a team that could be scrappy, but
they hadn't had a lot of success, and it was
really cool to see at that point with football. You
knew after that first year that they were in middle school,
it was like, Wow, this is a team that's going

(01:41:03):
to start. These are kids that are going to make
a legacy here. And it coincided with Doug Green coming
there perfectly, who at that time had never had a
hit coaching position, and that was he had been at
Pleasant and he was able to put Ridgdale football on
the map and created a tradition there. So it's so

(01:41:23):
much love and history between these for us between these schools.
Obviously our time spent at Elgin, but also our relationship
with people at Ridgdale. And if you think about it,
other than that gap where Ridgdale had left the MOAC
and went into the end ten Elgin and Ridgdale played
each other since the start of Elgin High School in

(01:41:46):
nineteen sixty four. I mean, that's a long time to
be playing a school.

Speaker 6 (01:41:50):
Right, no question about it. A lot of history there.

Speaker 8 (01:41:54):
And before we go back, I start the second half
a good friend of mine, Dave Wigton, who's also my
son's father in law. We got one person listening that
he's enjoying the broadcast. Eric, Okay, my hat goes off
and shout out to Dave Wigton and I hope you're
enjoying enjoy the whole second half.

Speaker 2 (01:42:12):
Yeah, I mean we want we're doing this for you, guys.
We tell each other all the time. Nobody's listening to
hear us. They're listening to hear the game, and we
want to do as much as we can to highlight
the game. But we like to highlight the past too,
because there's a strong, strong tradition of football in Marion
County that everybody can be proud of. So we like
talking about that. Both teams out on the field now

(01:42:36):
and Ridgdale will get the ball first and second half. Coach,
what do you think Ridgdale could possibly try to do
to just maybe make a dent in this in this
Elgin defense.

Speaker 8 (01:42:47):
Well, they have to go against a really tough, commic defense,
and I really think if they're going to try to
throw the ball, they've got to get it out quick
and fast and run short route five yard routes and
get Townshend to get the ball out. But they've got
to hold onto the football. They can't have any penalties.

(01:43:08):
They got to play perfect offensively. Defensively, they've got to
do whatever they can and sell out defensively and wrap up.
And they've got to take care of that counter because
right now that counter is really killing them.

Speaker 2 (01:43:19):
So a delay of game penalty, which I believe is
a carryover from the penalty that came at halftime with
coach Chapman and the referees. So fifteen yards forward for
the comic kicking team up to the Ridgedale thirty five
yard line. And you know, we talked about everybody seemed
to be coming in here and asking us you know,

(01:43:41):
did we think that was a late hit or whatever.
I think it was a bang bang play. But no
matter what, you've got to keep it under control, whether
you're player or coach.

Speaker 6 (01:43:52):
And hopefully both teams.

Speaker 2 (01:43:54):
The coach has talked about not being chippy in the
second half, regardless of what happens with the score. So
ball comes down to Ridgdale up to the twenty twenty
five thirty and down at the thirty five that is
Evan Ricketts with the return and a penalty flag comes
in late.

Speaker 6 (01:44:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (01:44:13):
See that's the kind of stuff that you know, we
just I just mentioned you can't if you're gonna win, uh,
you know, win without that. You don't need any late
hits or anything like that. I don't know if it's
verbal or exactly what happened the if they're getting together
and they're talking about exactly what the call.

Speaker 6 (01:44:30):
Is gonna be, but I know coach Winslow is not
gonna put up with it. All right, So.

Speaker 2 (01:44:38):
It's a personal foul against Elgins. So really the the
fifteen yard penalty that was against Ridgedal before the kick,
now you've made that back, you know, a mental mistake
here and and again it was chippy it going into half.
But they've got to be smart about both sides because
this game is not over. It's one nothing anything can happen.

Speaker 8 (01:45:02):
Yeah, I mean, what hat This looks like they're they're
trying to get it figured out here where the ball
should be spotted before it starts. It looks like he's
marching it off. It's going towards the Comets.

Speaker 2 (01:45:14):
So we're right at midfield.

Speaker 8 (01:45:16):
Yeah, right at midfield after all of that, and Rockets
have pretty good field position and we'll see if the
Comets can keep their composure. They're up twenty one nothing,
there's really nothing to be upset about. So first and
ten at midfield. Ridgedale has the ball first here in
the second half, Townsend in the backfield alone, three wide

(01:45:37):
receivers on the near side, two on the opposite side,
and there's the play whistle man in motion and that's
a fake handoff Towns and runs to his left up
to the fifty forty five and down at about the
forty three yard line. A nice game there for Yeah,

(01:46:00):
it looks like Harrison was on the tackle and also
number seven Malachi Middleton, senior defensive back over there and
they're having to feel from the safety position, and that's
not good if you're filling. And he's lining up well,
at least on this particular play. Second in short, he's
lining up almost twenty yards deep. Every play I was watching.

Speaker 2 (01:46:24):
On every play, the safeties are playing deep middle, which
I think is strange. Second down and four, now Townsend
rolling to his right and he throws it just a
little bit too low for the intended receiver, which was Ricketts.
Brings up third down.

Speaker 8 (01:46:40):
Yeah, Harrison was on coverage. Looks like eighteen. That's roads
on coverage. And you know the Rockets will not run
the football on second and short. So now they're forced
to possibly throw the ball again with third and about
three yards to go here, and they've got to take

(01:47:01):
advantage of that penalty and string some first downs together.

Speaker 2 (01:47:08):
So third down and three and I would think everything
is pretty much four down territory at this point. Townsend,
with two backs, gives it to d straight ahead. He
cuts it up and gets close to the first down.
He may be a little short. Brings up fourth and short.

Speaker 6 (01:47:28):
Yeah, it looks like Van Gundy was in there, one
of them. That's forty five. Yeah, that was.

Speaker 8 (01:47:35):
Jack van Gundy and a host of others. Very difficult
to see numbers. They've got the red.

Speaker 6 (01:47:41):
Jerseys with the silver gray numbers outlined in white.

Speaker 2 (01:47:46):
Townsend takes it himself and he's trying to push forward
and it is a stack up and it's no good.
That is, that's just strength against strength.

Speaker 8 (01:47:58):
The I think the quarterback tried to hold the ball out.
Looks like they did give him forward progress. Oh really
on holding the ball out over the line, and wow, I.

Speaker 2 (01:48:11):
Was sure that that was stopped. But obviously the referees
right there. So it is first and ten. Matthew hondaaker
a first down for the Rockets, and I believe that's
the first first down for them tonight.

Speaker 8 (01:48:24):
Yes, it is as it is, so maybe the Rockets
can get something going, get a little bit of confidence here.

Speaker 6 (01:48:29):
After picking up.

Speaker 8 (01:48:30):
A first down ball on the forty yard line, down
twenty one to nothing, ten eleven to go and clock running,
Townsend takes it himself up ahead and gains about three yards,
brings up second down. It's ten eleven to go in
the third quarter, that is, and they're trying to take
a page out of a comments playbook with a quarterback

(01:48:51):
keep up the middle, and they really tough two yards
on that Eric, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:48:57):
And they're doing it from shotgun, whereas the Comets are
really doing it from up under center with everybody bunched in.

Speaker 18 (01:49:06):
Well.

Speaker 8 (01:49:06):
Right now, the comments are loving the fact that they
are running the football because it just takes time off the.

Speaker 6 (01:49:11):
Clock, and the clock is in the comets favor right now.

Speaker 2 (01:49:17):
For five receivers, four on this side, one up top,
Townsend alone in the backfield. Two step drop. Now he
takes off to the right, up ahead to the thirty five,
thirty cuts through to twenty five and down at about
the twenty four make it the twenty three yard line.
That's another Matthew's Hondakker first down, and we have an
elgent player slow to get up.

Speaker 8 (01:49:38):
Real nice effort by the quarterback Towns and he puts
a shot on the guy. And right now, I don't
know if it's Harrison, but boy, they can't afford to
lose him. You're almost in a position at this point
on a night like tonight where it's hot and your
quarterback or you know, your best running back.

Speaker 6 (01:49:57):
May not have to play defense.

Speaker 2 (01:49:59):
Ye him off the field, and I don't think it's Harrison.
I see him kneeling over here.

Speaker 8 (01:50:04):
Okay, well, in any case, any player as valuable as him,
but this young man looks like they're checking down around
his ankle, and hopefully, uh it's not You're not serious.

Speaker 2 (01:50:20):
I want to let everyone know that at the end
of the game, we will be giving the Pillar Credit
Union Player of the Game and also a new little segment.
This week we have the Fahi Bank Play of the game,
So coach and I will decide what that will be
as comment player comes off the field. I believe that's
Malachi Middleton, senior defensive back.

Speaker 8 (01:50:44):
It doesn't he's not putting any weight on that leg,
so don't really know what it is, but hopefully the
young man will be Okay.

Speaker 2 (01:50:53):
The Rockets have a Matthews hondaktor a first down, first
and ten at the Elgin twenty three yard line, their
deepest penetration into Elgent territory. Tonight townsend back pass. Now
steps up and drills a pass just at the line
of scrimmage. I think he was across the line of
scrimmage and they're saying it was incomplete anyway. Yeah, now
they're saying it's a hold.

Speaker 6 (01:51:14):
Yeah, he passed the line of scrimmage, but.

Speaker 8 (01:51:21):
I thought he was going to try to run with it,
and he kind of pulled up and tried to hit
the receiver out on the outside, but to no avail.
Wipes out everything and they've got a hold. So it's
a beneficial play for the comments here. And it's still
going to be first in about twenty at the thirty
three yard line of Elgin. But again four down territory

(01:51:42):
here probably for most of the rest of the night,
and unless Bridgedale can get it within a score, I
would imagine they're kind of leaving everything out on the
field right now. Got two backs in the backfield offset
from the quarterback hand off to D's to the left.
He cuts through, gets to thirty up to the twenty five.

(01:52:02):
A nice run by Michael d'es picks up about eight
yards on first down. Looks like coach Chapman's got the
offense fired up from halftime.

Speaker 6 (01:52:12):
You know, they come out in the second half.

Speaker 8 (01:52:13):
They're showing a lot of life and Townsend has shown
a lot of a lot of leadership out there.

Speaker 6 (01:52:19):
D's on that run ran hard. The line's picking it
up a little bit.

Speaker 8 (01:52:23):
Comments are kind of playing a little bit of lethargic
tear defensively and h you know, they they got a
penalty on the Rockets. And but the Rockets have had
the football here and really doing a pretty good job
on this drive.

Speaker 2 (01:52:37):
Go backs in the backfield Towns and swing pass out
to slaughter Back and he is just hammered in the
backfield and takes a loss. And really there was that
was blown up because Aidan Sallier could not get his
man blocked.

Speaker 6 (01:52:53):
Yeah, I mean it was just and.

Speaker 2 (01:52:55):
That's tough for a wide receiver anyways to get that
block out there.

Speaker 6 (01:52:58):
Yeah, he knew it too. Yeah, Yeah, he was upset
with himself.

Speaker 8 (01:53:03):
He couldn't get his head in front, so he didn't
throw the block at all, and if he would have,
he would have got penalized for it.

Speaker 6 (01:53:09):
But boy, they lost yardage there.

Speaker 8 (01:53:11):
And it's third and back to about eighteen on the
thirty one yard line, and big defensive play for the Comets.
Get the ball back. I'm sure, like you were mentioned
in earlier four down territory for the Rockets.

Speaker 2 (01:53:26):
No backs in the backfield, five wide, three on the
near side, two up top. Townsend gets a snap, but
a penalty flag and I'm guessing oh, off side, somebody
lined up off sides for the Comets. I was expecting
maybe delay a game. Well, this is a part of
the game where you're up twenty one to nothing in

(01:53:47):
the third quarter and you feel like you're in control,
and so you have some mental lapses and you can't
afford to do that.

Speaker 15 (01:53:56):
You know.

Speaker 8 (01:53:56):
You mentioned, you know, in the rundown of the scores
with the Ashland Arrows being up twenty five to seven Overhearding,
and that's really a surprise to me as well as
Harding played last week, but that's why you play him.

Speaker 6 (01:54:09):
You know, you're week to week. And and I think
we've got another score here. It looks like.

Speaker 8 (01:54:17):
Lowry just scored on a touchdown for Pleasant and oh wow,
they've got a barn burner over there.

Speaker 2 (01:54:27):
Now another penalty flag false start, so Richdale gives back
those penalty yards they gained and it feels like this
game has just slowed to a snail's pace.

Speaker 6 (01:54:39):
Now.

Speaker 8 (01:54:39):
Yeah, because like I said, comments are in control, and
so you know you can't go You can't can't nap
on a team because if the other team's inspired, they
can jump up and get you. And the Rockets just
need to take advantage of the comets complacency right now
on defense, so it'll be third down and eighteen, and

(01:55:05):
everything that's kind of run to the outside has worked
relatively well for Ridgedal in this second half. Now the
swing pass hasn't worked real well, but D's off tackle
has worked, and Townshend running has worked. Townshend back to pass.

Speaker 2 (01:55:19):
Now he's rushed, gets away from one, throws it across
the middle, it's tipped up and intercepted by the comments
up ahead to the twenty twenty five thirty and out
of bounds. I didn't see who got it.

Speaker 6 (01:55:32):
I think it might have been Lust.

Speaker 2 (01:55:35):
Yeah, it looks like was it lust or no, wait,
he's right there.

Speaker 6 (01:55:39):
That's twenty twenty three TJ.

Speaker 2 (01:55:45):
Britten Nope, Umber eighteen roads. So Gavin Rhodes.

Speaker 8 (01:55:52):
Young Man's played a heck of a ball game, running
the ball on the counters and a big interception there
to stop the rocket drive. And let's see if the
comments can be inspired on that and get something going offensively.

Speaker 2 (01:56:06):
And you know it was it was a pretty good pass.
It just was a little bit too high, but he
threw a rocket and the you know, just the problem there.
It got tipped up in the air. Do you mean
to say that? He thought, Oh, yeah, I know it's
it's the rockets. But he did throw a rocket. He
threw a rocket. So first and ten for the comments

(01:56:31):
and hand off straight ahead to Luke Cart, I believe,
and gets about five yards, brings up second down.

Speaker 8 (01:56:40):
Well let's see if that was Luke Cart until the
way they walk that was Rhodes Roads. Yeah, eighteen. They've
got him in that in that Kansas City. I see,
I'm lined up.

Speaker 2 (01:56:53):
We turned the light on in the press box, so
it helps us to see everything in front of us.
But now it feels like the shadows are Yeah, it's
a lot harder. But as soon as I turn it
off then I won't be able to see anything. I've
written down number.

Speaker 8 (01:57:07):
Twenty eight in Luke Cart, So there's a good chance
he's gonna get the football lined up in the wing
right position.

Speaker 2 (01:57:15):
And off up ahead to the thirty five forty forty five.
And that was I'm wretty sure that was Jack van Gundy.

Speaker 6 (01:57:24):
Yeah, there's no question.

Speaker 8 (01:57:25):
He just missed. Steady right up the middle. Two hands
on the football. Knows what's at stake here, Keep the football,
keep the clock running five thirteen to go in the
third quarter, Commet's up twenty one to nothing. Coach wins Low,
you could tell the way he's calling the plays now,
he's going to keep it on the ground. He's got
a sophomore quarterback in the game and he's going to

(01:57:47):
get him some experience and hopefully a touchdown at the
end of the drive for the Commets here at least,
they're wishing that.

Speaker 2 (01:57:54):
Run to the left to Van Gundy and he's stopped
at the line of scrimmage. That makes the second down.

Speaker 8 (01:57:59):
Yeah, Van Gundy, he was not there, and it looked
like Townsend and I'm trying to see if pot Cutter
was in there. He was on that side, freshman from Ridgedale.
And these guys are still working hard. I'm telling you
it's they got a second long, four thirty two to go,

(01:58:19):
and they have no choice but to keep playing with
a lot of pride here right now and try to
get a stop here against the Comets.

Speaker 2 (01:58:26):
We're getting dive bombed by flies in here. That's what
we get for opening the windows exactly. A sweet play
to the left up to the fifty and across to
the forty seven, and that would be Brennan Lukart on
the carry game of about five.

Speaker 8 (01:58:42):
He doesn't look like he's moving very far, but when
he does, he's so tall, he's got long legs, and
I tell you, he covers some ground and he puts
his shoulder down and he just sort of glides through there.

Speaker 6 (01:58:54):
And it really does a nice job coming on that counter.

Speaker 2 (01:58:58):
So that makes it third down, and I think it's
about five. The scoreboard is saying four.

Speaker 6 (01:59:05):
It's part of the game where we've got to give
the offensive line some love.

Speaker 8 (01:59:08):
Here. Emery Skaggs number fifty, it's a guard Land and
Shepherd fifty one, Dylan Phillips, Greenleaf and Lowry. These guys
are the guys that are making a go.

Speaker 2 (01:59:20):
Parson takes it himself from my under center. He gets
down the sideline and its knocked out of bounds at
about the fifteen yard line. And he was up under
center at quarterback, was trying to take it on the
sneak himself and very astutely cuts it to the outside
when the middle was closed up and gets the Matthews
Hondaker first down.

Speaker 6 (01:59:41):
And we got to give another score here.

Speaker 2 (01:59:44):
Hope allowed and with a seventy five yard touchdown pass
defensive back went for the pick and no safety help.
We got detailed texts.

Speaker 8 (01:59:53):
We're getting Colin Boyd, former Elgent player, over at Pleasant
tonight watching the game and giving me basically giving us
play by play. A counterplay here doesn't get much to
the right, and I believe that was Harrison with the carries.
So second down and Elgin's playing their game now right,

(02:00:18):
just low it down. This is their perfect scenario for
the common offense up twenty one to nothing.

Speaker 6 (02:00:23):
They're not in a hurry.

Speaker 8 (02:00:25):
They're calling their plays right out of their basic playbook.
And two point fifty four of the clock's moving and
coach Winslow would love nothing more than to just methodically
take the ball, run as much time off.

Speaker 6 (02:00:40):
The clock, and put points on the board.

Speaker 2 (02:00:43):
Zach Bauer's up under center, Harrison in motion, They hand
it to him to the left side, and they tackle
him in the backfield. He gets thrown down. That's not Harrison,
that's actually Gavin Rhodes. And I think we have a
player I'm guessing a cramp the way he's holding his
leg up in the air.

Speaker 8 (02:01:03):
Yeah, it's that time of the game where these guys
it seems like no matter how much water you drink,
it's just sometimes still isn't enough.

Speaker 2 (02:01:12):
I want to remind everybody after the game, we will
have the scoreboard show back in the studio. Racelin grab
in there tonight without his normal partner Alec Bichelman, because
mister Bichelman is getting married tomorrow.

Speaker 6 (02:01:28):
Wow. Yeah, so we used to have a full house
in there.

Speaker 15 (02:01:32):
I know.

Speaker 2 (02:01:33):
But I will say that there is someone in there
helping him tonight, and that person is probably better looking
than all of us.

Speaker 8 (02:01:42):
Well, I'll tell you, I really enjoy Kurt and Jimmy
coming down from We always teasing because it seems like
the only team they go and watch up there in
Magic ninety five is is Carrie.

Speaker 2 (02:01:56):
And I want to say that's where they're I can't remember.

Speaker 8 (02:02:01):
So there's probably nobody knows more about Carrie than those
two guys over the years of watching them play. And
you know, obviously Carrie won the state championship just a
few years ago.

Speaker 6 (02:02:11):
But we always tease him.

Speaker 8 (02:02:12):
But they've got a great program up there, and and
we we've always enjoyed their reports.

Speaker 2 (02:02:18):
So we want to give congratulations to Alex.

Speaker 8 (02:02:20):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (02:02:20):
Yeah, we're excited for him. And Racelan will be going
to the wedding tomorrow. I will be at Ohio State tomorrow,
you go. I will be down on the sideline, up
in the press box and can't believe. I mean, it
was hard enough to believe we had gotten to high
school football, which was great. Now I can't believe we're
actually at Buckeye football. And the only problem is that

(02:02:45):
game will be over after the you know, probably the
beginning of the second quarter.

Speaker 6 (02:02:51):
That number that's Caden Daniel.

Speaker 8 (02:02:53):
It looks like, yeah, he's up and moving and he's
going to have a sore haym string or calf muscle.
It looks like he's moving pretty good. They got to
get him some some uh some water over there, and
I'm sure he'll be okay and be back.

Speaker 2 (02:03:08):
Yeah. Sometimes with the cramp, it's it's just rub, rub
that cramp out as much as you can, but then walk.

Speaker 6 (02:03:15):
You just have to walk.

Speaker 8 (02:03:16):
Yeah, and then the next real sharp movement he comes
back again.

Speaker 2 (02:03:23):
So he'll be third down and ten for the Comets
at the Ridgedale fifteen yard line.

Speaker 6 (02:03:33):
Comments are lining up in that double wing, one back set.
That's their bread and butter.

Speaker 2 (02:03:37):
Right here, and a false start by the comets.

Speaker 8 (02:03:41):
Yeah, they had all that time to think about what
they're gonna do. And uh, the tight end on the
right side just got off the ball just a little
bit early. I believe that's the first one for them
on offense, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (02:03:54):
Yeah, they've had the mold plies. They have not had
any false starts, so that's pretty good. So this is
these are some things that the coach is going to
write down to talk about. You always have, no matter
you win early lose, especially when you win, you always
have things that you need to continue to work on.
Hand off on Harrison to the sweep right and then
he cuts it back up the middle and makes a

(02:04:16):
nice game back to the original line scrimmage. But that
will bring up fourth down, fourth inten another ridge deal
player down. I don't see who that is.

Speaker 8 (02:04:30):
And they only had two guys that didn't start the
game both ways and in a night late tonight. That's uh,
that's a big deal.

Speaker 6 (02:04:45):
The same thing. He's got his leg up. Uh yeah,
cramp cramp and his leg.

Speaker 2 (02:04:49):
I want to give a shout out, uh for the
hospitality that we got here at Elgin mentioned it in pregame.
Jason Hicks does such a great job. There's a lot
of media here tonight. We've got two three radio stations here,
we have newspaper, plus your normal people that are in
the press box. And Jason when we got here, he

(02:05:14):
met us with the van when we pulled in, came,
took the equipment out, carried it up the stairs for us,
which I've never seen somebody do. And it looks like
JJ slaughterback the one that was down and once we
got up here had a refrigerator full of beverages, got
Berwick pizza for everybody up here. Elgin has always treated

(02:05:37):
us so well and it's just another reminder of what
kind of a class program they try to run in
their athletic department.

Speaker 6 (02:05:47):
Yeah, it's good to be back.

Speaker 8 (02:05:48):
And I think we've talked about earlier as much as
the heat coach or mister Hicks talked about how they
kept the water on the field and made it very
safe for the kids.

Speaker 2 (02:06:01):
Back to pass and incomplete that was Bowers intended for.
I believe.

Speaker 6 (02:06:11):
In fact, there's a flag on the plane trying to see.

Speaker 2 (02:06:16):
The hold.

Speaker 8 (02:06:16):
Yeh, yep, good old hold. He was just trying to
hold himself up. He wasn't really trying to hold the
defensive man, so.

Speaker 2 (02:06:24):
That pass was intended for I can't tell if that was.
I think it's Nash Lusty Nationalust. So Rockets take over
first and ten. Now another Ridgedale player down, and I
believe that's that is either the quarterback Brydon Townsend or

(02:06:50):
it's Kayden Daniel who had got a cramp earlier. So,
like you said, Coach, that time of the night, yeah,
where you know it has been. Even though it's a
lot more comfortable now, it's very humid. Uh. These kids
they don't think about drinking the water. They just don't
think about it. You know, we were that age once too,

(02:07:13):
And when you're in the middle of a game, you
can't wait till the night before the game or the
night of the game to start drinking the water. It's
got to be all week and hopefully tonight. I think
the weather report looks like it's going to start milding
up a little bit the rest of this weekend and
then also next week Eric, so hopefully we'll get back

(02:07:35):
on normal football weather and these kids can keep hydrating
and they'll be healthy the rest of the way. So
it looks like that was Braden Townsend, the quarterback and
right now warming up on the sideline as Caden Parrish.
He is a freshman.

Speaker 8 (02:07:51):
I mentioned looked like a sub in for Elgion Colby.
Newman number two, junior six one sixty is out here
in the corner position. Three is that twenty three at safety?
That's uh TJ. Britten, sophomore five seven fifty. Real smart
for the coach to start inserting some of the younger

(02:08:13):
players in get him some experience, also keep those starters
healthy for next week.

Speaker 2 (02:08:18):
So Parish at quarterback gets the snap, hands off to
D's tries to take it to the left side, but
tackled right away.

Speaker 8 (02:08:29):
I'll tell you Filling hard landon Shepherd six two ninety.
He wasn't the only one there on the play, but
he was the guy I was watching. I isolated on
him at middle linebacker and he did nothing but just
stuffed the hole. And uh, he's just like a man
out there. You could tell these kids have been in
their new weight room, work it out and uh and

(02:08:51):
really they're tackling. H We mentioned it even last year
if you remember when we did their games. Uh, their
tackling is a lot better than it was in tree
some of the previous years.

Speaker 2 (02:09:01):
Second down in eleven one oh six left in the
third period, elging up twenty one to nothing. Ridgedale with
the ball, D's to the right side up to the
fifteen and breaks free and cuts out. Looks like he
has enough for Matthews Hondaker first down. If not, he's
a little short, but a nice run by D's there
to the right side out to the outside, real nice.

Speaker 6 (02:09:22):
Run by D's.

Speaker 8 (02:09:23):
There was a little bit of arm tackling there and
D's went right through it and he really picked up
a lot of yards after contact. And another Rocket player down,
another Rocket player down. Let's see, Wow, this is offensive lineman.
I think it was moving along pretty well in the

(02:09:43):
third quarter, but it's come to a standstill once again.
So under a minute left in the third period, and
that was enough for Matthew Tondaker first down. As the
Rocket player is up walking off the field. I think
that's number sixty one fifty one, Michael Justice. So the

(02:10:04):
Rockets still finding ways to pick up some yards and
other than the interception, the Rockets offense has done some
good things here in the second half. Yeah, they're working
and you know Townsend gets a little bit of some
running room. He's pretty impressive running the football, and they're

(02:10:25):
just trying to spread the Comets out. The Comets inside
defensive front four really has done a great job. And
that's Finn Van Gundy.

Speaker 6 (02:10:39):
Long in there.

Speaker 2 (02:10:42):
Townsend back in the game, hand off to the left
side to Ricketts and he picks up maybe two second down.

Speaker 8 (02:10:50):
Yeah, Drew Brown, he's only a sophomore, six foot one fifty,
he looks bigger than one fifty. Number sixty six playing
inside tackle. Has done an nice job in there on
the defensive line. And also, of course you can't say
enough about Land and Shepherd in the middle, and Garrett
Lowry was in there, number sixty two defensive line. These

(02:11:12):
guys have really shut down the inside game of the Rockets.

Speaker 2 (02:11:19):
Eighteen seconds left in the third period, four wide receivers
on the near side, second and eight at the Rocket
twenty seven yard line. Townshend back to pass, goes deep downfield.
He's got a man old just out of his hands.
But a beautiful pass, very nice pass that was intended

(02:11:39):
for Aiden Sallyre. That was going to be a big play,
but he laid it out there for Sallyre to catch.

Speaker 8 (02:11:45):
I'll tell you what that was. Right on the money.
He had some time that time, and Saler was right
behind the comets. And I think last week they had
some problems with receivers getting from Cardington getting behind and hey,
they went for broke on that one.

Speaker 6 (02:12:03):
Now they've got a third and about nine.

Speaker 2 (02:12:06):
They still have an opportunity to pick up a first
down and keep the drive moving. So three seconds left
in the third period, Ridgedale with third and nine, four
wide receivers down here, one up top, no backs in
the backfield. Townsend back to pass. Now he steps up,
breaks through, takes off running and is tackled at about

(02:12:30):
the thirty yard line. Got you to do it, and
that's the end of the third period. Comments stay on
top twenty one to nothing over Ridgdale. So we'll go
ahead and take a break. When we come back, we'll
have the start of the fourth quarter. You're listening to
high school football on fourteen ninety Wmris.

Speaker 15 (02:13:52):
The Matthews Honda Acura High School Game of the.

Speaker 2 (02:13:54):
Week, Ridgedale punts the ball off to Elgin to start
the fourth period. Ball rolls out of bounds at the
Elgin thirty eight yard line. Elgin on top start the
fourth period twenty one to nothing. Eric Mosley, Coach John

(02:14:15):
Cuzio here for you tonight, Week two action, and we've
been checking a lot of scores. Sounds like a.

Speaker 8 (02:14:22):
Slugfest over at Pleasant was tied and then a kid
went for the interception and missed it. Safety wasn't there,
and who will allowed and went up twenty two to fifteen.

Speaker 6 (02:14:40):
Yep.

Speaker 8 (02:14:41):
So it's really a good football game over there. We
will have it playing a good football game over here.
We will have Pleasant next week. Handoff goes to the
right on a sweep up ahead breaking through and that's
Harrison close to a first down up to the forty
eight yard line. Yeah, Comet's still playing up tempo. They

(02:15:02):
know that the Rockets a little bit tired here tonight. Yeah,
starting in the fourth quarter, and coach Winslow is staying
in his tight wing tea. And like you said earlier,
we talked about this. If they can get a lead
and they can run the football, that's what they're going
to try to do and stay in it. They got
their sophomore quarterback trying to get him some experience, and

(02:15:24):
they've got Harrison back in the backfield, and a.

Speaker 2 (02:15:26):
Sweep to Harrison to the right, he gets across the fifty,
up to the forty five, forty and down at about
now they're saying he got out of bounds at the forty,
but that's enough for Matthew hondiaker a first down.

Speaker 6 (02:15:39):
It looks like Pleasants losing a little traction there.

Speaker 2 (02:15:43):
Ooh, now it's twenty nine to fifteen. Hope will allowed
and over Pleasant so down fourteen points. Not sure how
much time is left.

Speaker 8 (02:15:55):
Towards the end of the third quarter with three something
when they were down twenty two to fifteen.

Speaker 2 (02:16:00):
One thing we know about that Pleasant team. They can
be quick strike and they have a veteran leading them
in Owen Lowry first and ten hand off straight ahead
and I believe that was to Gavin Rhodes.

Speaker 6 (02:16:15):
And we'll be over there next week.

Speaker 2 (02:16:17):
We will be over there next week as the Spartans
will be hosting Whitehall Yearling.

Speaker 6 (02:16:25):
Coach Rod Lightfoot is the head coach there.

Speaker 8 (02:16:29):
Coach Milt Lightfoot was I worked with him for many
years and then when I became the head coach, he
was my assistant defensive.

Speaker 2 (02:16:35):
CODA And wasn't Rod one of your players?

Speaker 6 (02:16:37):
Rod was one of our players and also Brian.

Speaker 2 (02:16:41):
Fumble on that carry and that was Van Gundy and
I think he was able to get the ball back.
But yeah, that's right at the line to make for
the first down. I think, yep, they're saying it's Matthew
Tonday after a first Yeah. The Lightfoot family at Elgin.

(02:17:03):
Coach Lightfoot was here from the time that this building
on the old school grounds was built. But he also
was teaching at LaRue before that, So I had coach
Lightfoot as a science teacher in middle school.

Speaker 6 (02:17:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (02:17:19):
I learned a lot of defensive football from him, and
well he was hard knows coach and really enjoyed coaching
with him for all those years.

Speaker 2 (02:17:29):
Counterplay to the left side and that was Rhodes for
a pickup of four.

Speaker 6 (02:17:35):
I remember.

Speaker 2 (02:17:38):
One thing that I think every Elgin player that had
coach Lightfoot, Coach Milt Lightfoot would quote. The one thing
he would always say is it ain't tag.

Speaker 6 (02:17:46):
I was gonna say that yet it ain't tagged.

Speaker 2 (02:17:49):
That was his defensive philosophy. If you didn't tackle somebody,
if you just touched him, it ain't tag.

Speaker 8 (02:17:56):
No question about it. It ain't tag out there any Wednesday.
That means that since we're at pleasant on Friday. Will
the Spartans be at Ralfie's.

Speaker 2 (02:18:05):
And that's the hope. I need to talk to their coach,
coach CJ. Westler is a sweet play goes ahead for
about three yards, but a penalty flag on that. But
as long as it's he's okay with it. But we
will be moving that show to Tuesday this trade. That's
right because the Buckeye, the McDaniel Automotive Buckeye ticket giveaway

(02:18:28):
is going to be on Wednesday because of the Popcorn
Festival and as everyone knows and Marion, everything shuts down
for the popcorn festival. So please come out and join us,
especially if we're able to get the Spartans out there,
that will be their first visit this year. One again,
think the Elgin and Ridgedale football teams, the communities for

(02:18:50):
coming out. You packed Ralphie's out on Wednesday. It was
amazing as a penalty flag on the sideline and I
think one of the coaches just got a flag called
on him or thrown on him for Ridgdale, so not

(02:19:13):
sure what it was, but it was against Ridgdale as
they talk it out. But again, uh, the atmosphere on
Wednesday was great.

Speaker 8 (02:19:22):
Yeah, there's no no doubt about it. Mark full does
a great job in there at Ralphie's. And uh, we
really enjoyed having the coaches there. The week before that
we had cart Or a harding coach, Coach Williamson and
the guys that they bring to talk and talk about,
you know, the positions they played and how how they
worked and and and they're playing with you know, team efforts.

Speaker 6 (02:19:46):
I tell you, it really does your heart good to
see those.

Speaker 8 (02:19:48):
Fine young men out there and and uh, you see
all the fans and people come there to support them,
their families and cousins and aunts and uncles and friends
and uh, and it's just really great to see. It's
enough lifting experience, I know for me to go in
there and visit with all those guys well.

Speaker 2 (02:20:06):
And it's something that the communities rally around. They like
coming out there and supporting their kids. And again it's
another one of those instances nobody is out there or
listening to hear us. It's the kids, the coaches, the
teams that are featured, and it's just fun to be
able to get to know them on a little bit

(02:20:26):
more of a one on one level. And then when
we're off the air, being able to talk to some
of the players, the other players that didn't get to
get on air, and getting some of those stories, talking
to the coaches, and the thing that I loved about
this past Wednesday, no matter what happens in this game,
there tons of respect between these two coaching staffs the teams.

(02:20:47):
You can't always sometimes you can't get two teams in
one space, and sometimes there's just so much tension you
could cut. It didn't feel that with these two teams.
There's a level of respect between them, and that starts
with the coaches.

Speaker 8 (02:20:59):
Yeah, there's that's a great point, and uh, both staffs
and I talked to some of the parents and people
I have known for years, and uh, it's really nice
to see. And we always talk about school always goes
better if your football team is having fun out there
and winning their games and and uh being successful. And

(02:21:19):
I know the other teachers in the school besides the
guys that are coaching, enjoy that too.

Speaker 6 (02:21:25):
People are in a better mood.

Speaker 8 (02:21:26):
And Uh, I just think it's a great high school
experience when when you got these guys and you got
a whole bunch of cheerleaders down here, tonight.

Speaker 6 (02:21:33):
We saw both bands play tonight.

Speaker 8 (02:21:35):
It's just a positive experience in Marion County and we
like to take our hats off to them once again.

Speaker 2 (02:21:41):
So comments are down inside the red zone. Actually second
in goal makes it third and goal to dive plays
after the penalty was assessed and we weren't sure if that.
I think it was on something on the sideline, but
put the ball within the five yard line, so it's
third down and goal at the three for the Comets.

Speaker 6 (02:22:03):
It's hard to believe we had to come up with
all of that talk because there wasn't much.

Speaker 8 (02:22:08):
Going on down there. They weren't even playing. I think
the referees were just taking a break or well they.

Speaker 2 (02:22:14):
Were trying to figure out. I mean, I would think
if something was going on on the sideline, it's a
pretty easy thing. This guy said this. It's a fifteen
yard pilder, So third and goal at the three, a
pitch out, sweep and touchdown and that is Harrison the
three yard run at the eight oh one mark of

(02:22:35):
the fourth period, and that's that extends the Comet lead
twenty seven to nothing, eight oh.

Speaker 6 (02:22:43):
One to go in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 8 (02:22:46):
Twenty seven nothing Comets, Uh are pretty well at hand
here and.

Speaker 2 (02:22:52):
We have our kicker in there, Bailey Abbott.

Speaker 6 (02:22:57):
Bailey Abbot, and I think there's going to be a
flag on the y that's.

Speaker 2 (02:23:02):
An encroachment, so that moves it up a little bit closer.

Speaker 6 (02:23:08):
Let her kick it.

Speaker 8 (02:23:09):
Yeah, a lot of teams will go if they get
a penalty, go for two. But in this situation, asked you,
they're going to go ahead?

Speaker 2 (02:23:15):
Line up again, yep, they're letting her kick it. So
half the distance to the goal and Abbott lining up
for the kick. Snap is good, hold his good kick
us up and it is blocked. But a good attempt
there and that keeps the score twenty seven to nothing.
Elgin over Ridgedale. We'll keep it right here, you know, coach,

(02:23:38):
Let's we kind of touched on it. But this crowd
is really good. And again from my days of plane
at Elgin, you know, we didn't used to have people
really sitting in the end zone. Now you have them
bringing chairs. They've got a bench right there behind the goal,
a goal.

Speaker 8 (02:23:57):
Post, well I remember a bench, and down by the
bell we had some people, but all the way across
it's like they're sitting at the beach and I guess
they've started that a little bit of a tradition there.
But boy, I tell you to night like tonight, you
want to be out there where you can feel that air,
and the night air seems like it's not cool, but
it's comfortable. There's a breeze that was a little bit

(02:24:19):
of a breeze, so it's turned out to be really
a really nice, comfortable night. And they there are people
sitting around the Nick Hajar Victory bell, and I'm proud
to say that my graduating class of ninety four was
the one that we were able to put that together.
But they also, you know a little inside information. There's

(02:24:41):
a victory bell that they ring inside the locker room too,
and that thing has been around forever and it's literally
a hammer, a metal hammer in this this iron bell
with a stick. Well, the one that we had was
presented to us by Bill Seger and UH, the Saga family.
And Bill was a real fine football player here and

(02:25:03):
they Mike Mike Segar, I believe that worked the chain
gangs over there, UH for years, and they came in
one day. I was assistant coach with this this bell,
so meet teaching industrial arts. We built this box and
decorated it up with a comment on it and everything,

(02:25:25):
and and uh we assigned where the seniors assigned a
senior to carry that on away.

Speaker 6 (02:25:33):
Trips, and uh we had.

Speaker 8 (02:25:36):
With the lock, and we got that thing out when
we had a victory, and we rang it as many
times and we barked out how many times, how many
points that we got, And it's just, uh, it's tradition
and and that when you can have that kind of
stuff happening and pass it down along to the to
the Uh. You know some of these kids or nephews

(02:25:58):
and brothers, cousins and grandsons of former Elgin players. So
it's really a big deal.

Speaker 2 (02:26:06):
Penalty flag against the Comets. Ridgedale took the kickoff the
Ohio State University at Marion kickoff and farra Cotta at
the thirty five and off sides by Elgin brings it
up to the forty.

Speaker 6 (02:26:22):
So we got some subs in aiden Danners in at
corner for Elgin. Get some names here. Number forty four
is in there. He's defensive end.

Speaker 2 (02:26:30):
Townshend with a bullet across the middle incomplete. I like
the way that Townshend just stood in the pocket there
though it brings up second down.

Speaker 8 (02:26:38):
Yeah, Luke Nelson's in at defensive end. Twenty four Barry
to Helms, he's played. Let's see who else do we have?
Number Two's in there. Kolby Newman on the other side,
looks like twenty eight. He's carried the ball quite a
bit on offense. That's Brendan Lukart. But he's over there

(02:27:00):
playing some defense now, So we'll try to get some
of the rest of these numbers and these new kids
that are in seven fifty six to go.

Speaker 6 (02:27:07):
Commet's up twenty seven to nothing.

Speaker 2 (02:27:10):
Second and five for the Rockets. Townsend three step drop.
Now he goes deep trying to get his man. There's
a little bit of tugging there, yep. And that's a
pass interference, yep, no question about it. The pass was
intended for Aiden Sallyer.

Speaker 8 (02:27:27):
It's like twenty one on coverage. Jayden Tanner got just
a little bit too close. Fifty fours in the game
for the Comets. That's Cooper Liking sophomore. They're getting a
lot of their younger players in their twenties coming out.

Speaker 6 (02:27:39):
He was in and that's Chase Gillim. He's only a freshman.
Big kid.

Speaker 8 (02:27:45):
Uh, that's six to two hundred, so they've Commet's future
still looks bright.

Speaker 2 (02:27:51):
Absolutely makes it a Matthew's Honda Acur a first down
at the Comet forty five yard line Ridgedale. Even though
this game is well in control of the com it's
still playing really tough. Two wide receivers on each side,
one back in the backfield, Townshend aligning his receivers. Man
in motion, that's Ricketts. He moves to the right side.

(02:28:16):
Townsend rolls right, he's looking looking, throws it and just
tiped through the hands of Rickets and he comes up limping.
I think it's another cramp.

Speaker 8 (02:28:27):
Yeah, it just seems like any jerky motion. Now, these guys,
they're really Uh. I think their training staff definitely is
gonna have to reevaluate what they've been doing during the
week and uh just hydrate him more, I guess. And
and uh, like I said, I'm hoping that this heat

(02:28:49):
for all of the athletes all across the state of
Ohio get a get a reprieve from it, because he
can't be fun for anybody.

Speaker 2 (02:28:57):
A few score updates in the fourth quarter, Ohawk up
big over Carrington, forty seven to six Hope will A
Louden now up thirty six to fifteen over Pleasant. In
the fourth quarter, Gallion up fourteen to nothing over Carry
Upper Sandusky is beating Mount Gay at twenty seven to eighteen.

(02:29:17):
Madison's still up fourteen to seven over River Valley second
down and nine. Townsend rolls to his right again and
is being yanked at, but throws it an incomplete all
of the hands of the intended receiver and that was
number three Ajmbody.

Speaker 8 (02:29:37):
Forty four Luke Nelson, sophomore was in on pressuring the quarterback,
and number fifteen Landon Lavallet, senior defensive lineman, was in
there for put pressure on the quarterback. Townsend, Ontario is
beating Centerberg fourteen to seven. East Knocks up twenty five

(02:29:57):
to twelve over Winford. North Union up by two over
Liberty Union twenty eight to twenty six. Ashland still at
big Overhearting thirty nine to fourteen and a penalty flag.
That's encroachment again.

Speaker 2 (02:30:16):
Well, no actually lined up off sides was a receiver,
so that's a penalty on the rockets. Northmore up forty
nine to nothing over South Central Dalton forty one Highland
nineteen triad Up nineteen to twelve over b Cyrus eight
to forty two, Buckeye Central nothing, Gibsonburg forty two, Senekeast

(02:30:37):
twenty eight, Heath fourteen, Buckeye Valley seven.

Speaker 6 (02:30:43):
One.

Speaker 2 (02:30:44):
Final Columbus Academy beat Jonathan Alder twenty seven to nine,
Colonel Crawford forty eight, Richmond Heights zero. And I'm going
to try to find you Mount Vernon score, coach, because
you were wondering, So let's see if I can find it.

Speaker 8 (02:31:02):
Yeah, I try to do comparisons from one week to
the next, you know, when I try to evaluate how
good a team really is when they win the game
and that that's so and so forth. Kind of wanted
to see, you know, how good Ashland you know, is
because they're putting it on Harding, and I thought Harding
was pretty impressive that last week.

Speaker 2 (02:31:20):
So well. As never know, Ashland had a battle with
River Valley. Even though he ended up winning by two scores,
it wasn't that it was close all the way up
into the fourth quarter. So right now Newark is beating
Mount Vernon seventeen to seven. In the fourth quarter. Townsend

(02:31:42):
rolls to his right, sets up now throws it and
incomplete intended for I think that's Colt Colt Rawlins. That's
a freshman number one.

Speaker 8 (02:31:56):
Yeah, he had an opportunity to make a nice catch
out there in the open field and couldn't come up
with it. Young man's a little upset with himself, but
he's got a long way to go. He's got to
just shake it off and get back to the huddle
and try it again.

Speaker 2 (02:32:13):
So now fourth down and thirty, So Ridgdale going to
punt seven twenty seven left in the fourth period. It
feels like no time has ticked off the clock.

Speaker 6 (02:32:33):
There was a span there where it was like they
were just down there, Yeah, down there visiting or something.
I don't know what was going on there.

Speaker 2 (02:32:42):
Snap back. That's a nice punt all the way down
to the thirty. Went from a twenty five to the
thirty and rolls down to about the sixteen yard line.
Really good punt thereby Ridgdale, and I believe.

Speaker 6 (02:32:58):
That was We're gonna have.

Speaker 8 (02:33:01):
We're gonna have a host of others on offense for
the comments, So we'll try to get the numbers of
the running backs, and I'm sure comments will keep it
on the ground.

Speaker 6 (02:33:11):
And they've got seven to nineteen.

Speaker 8 (02:33:17):
Looks like their starters are out of the game, which
is a smart move for coach Winslow with eight more
games to go playoff possibilities. Yes, I did say playoffs, Eric,
I can't believe. I know, second game of the season.
I've gone against my better judgment to ever talk about
playoffs until after about the ninth game of the season,

(02:33:42):
until you tell me it's playoff time.

Speaker 2 (02:33:44):
Yeah, I mean, you know, the way it's set up.
You know, you don't get any kind of rankings until
about week five as the handoff goes to the right side,
but a penalty flag. I mean, there's more lawn and
stacked up here than at a laundry mat. There's no
doubt about it, you know. And the teams you have

(02:34:07):
to always be aware. I mean, at this point in
the season, everybody's still in playoff potential, you know, and
with taking sixteen teams now, I mean almost everybody, and
until late in the season, I mean you have to
be losing about four in a row to really be
out of the playoffs. Early on in the season, yeah, I.

Speaker 8 (02:34:28):
Mean, we've had teams where they didn't even have to
win the last game to make the first round of
the playoffs, and you don't want to do that because
you want to have momentum going in.

Speaker 6 (02:34:39):
So I don't really like start talking about the playoffs
until after until about week seven or week eight.

Speaker 8 (02:34:46):
Well, remember and how teams stack up, because you don't
really even know what type of a team you really
have until after about the third fourth ball game.

Speaker 2 (02:34:55):
So a turnover here, didn't even realize there was a fumble.
So still with the ball, Townsend throws it complete up
ahead to the five, down.

Speaker 1 (02:35:06):
To the.

Speaker 2 (02:35:08):
Two yard line.

Speaker 8 (02:35:13):
Well, here's where the defensive backs have got to try
to keep the receivers and running backs inbounds. We talk
about clock management. I know they've got the the younger
players in for the comments, but they still have to
learn situation football. And I know the defensive coordinator and
probably the defense is probably thinking, whether you know, possible

(02:35:36):
shutout is going to go down the wayside, But I
guess the score is more important than the shutout and
get keeping your players healthy.

Speaker 2 (02:35:46):
So how how important is that really for a coach?
Because let's face it, point differential can play into the
computer rankings, but I don't think it's as much of
a unless it's somebody that maybe is a higher division.
But in this case, it's not really that much of
a big deal, no, And.

Speaker 8 (02:36:03):
I think at this point common sense has to come
into play and keeping your kids healthy. And there's no
reason why any starter should be in the ballgame at
this time for Elgin, and and they're not. They've got
them out of there and getting those younger kids and
in there. Well, you had the younger kids in there
and they fumbled the football. So what did they learn?
They got to take care of the football. In this situation,

(02:36:26):
Ridgdale's going to be trying to strip the ball from him.
So that situation, every time you take a snap, you
learn something, and as a younger player, Elgin's offense learned something.
So that's just gonna make them better. Plus they work
all week too, and they get an opportunity to come
out here and play on Friday night, and coach Winslow's
rewarding them for that.

Speaker 2 (02:36:46):
So Richdale takes a time out. We'll keep it right here,
you know, coach you mentioned you know some of these
teams when they get into the playoffs or are in
playoff position, you know, don't have to to win the league.
They don't have to do too much anymore. Remember two
years ago, Pleasant made the playoffs with a two to

(02:37:07):
eight record based off of their two victories being against
teams that were in playoff position and higher division because
of the expanded playoff. And we've gone back and forth, Yeah,
since that year that they expanded the playoffs about the
merits of it, and I think they're still trying to

(02:37:28):
find a way to make it work. I feel like
last year teams were maybe a little bit more evenly matched.
But then you know, we had here at Elgin last year,
an Elgin team that was a higher seed but got
beat by handily by a team that seemingly was the
lower seed. So you really don't know.

Speaker 8 (02:37:47):
Yeah, it depends on the league and the competition they play.
And that's why it's a good idea for teams like
Pleasant to play Hope well loud and find out what
their team is all about.

Speaker 6 (02:37:58):
Now coach.

Speaker 8 (02:38:00):
Westler is going to be able to go back to
the drawing board and find out, Okay, last week they
beat North Union forty four to nothing or whatever, and
this week they get beat So you know, if they
had a false sense of confidence, I'm sure that you
know they'll be able to get those things corrected for
next week and when they play Whitehall again at home.

(02:38:21):
So you know, these are things that these teams are
going to evaluate each and every week. And if you're
playing somebody from not in your area, and that's a
good thing.

Speaker 2 (02:38:31):
So Townsend dives in for the one yard touchdown run
for the Rockets. So the Rockets on the board at
the six twenty seven mark of the fourth period, and
then to kick the extra point is Derek Mahaffey, number

(02:38:55):
thirteen junior, and everybody is lined up, snap back, bounces back,
now running and oh, two point conversion on the pass
from Colt Rollins. I didn't see who caught it, but

(02:39:22):
that's two point conversion makes the score. Elgin twenty seven,
Ridge Dale eight.

Speaker 6 (02:39:29):
Real nice effort by the young man. The ball was
actually rolled back.

Speaker 8 (02:39:34):
He picked it up out of necessity and the good
old fireplay, you just yell fire or whatever their code
word is, and the receivers just go out into a
pass route. And the young man picked it up and
rolled out and throw a nice ball, the low one
to the only the receiver could catch, and he got
it in the end zone for a two point conversion,
so real nice execution on that two point. So at

(02:39:58):
this point, you know, coach talked about how when the
young players are in there and the mistakes happen. I
like you, for example, the turnover by Elgin on offense,
you kind of like there's probably some ways of looking
at it, like, oh, well it's late in the game
and all that. But as a coach, you have to

(02:40:18):
be like, hey, guys, that was your opportunity, right, and
you hate to win the game and kind of limp
off the field, like you just basically let them score
twice and score eight points because you put the younger
players in. But those younger players are going to have
to learn how to play. And if this was a

(02:40:39):
cooler evening and so on and so forth. I still
am a proponent of getting those older kids out of
the game, your starters and those younger kids, and they
just have to get ready for next week. A little
squib kick there, and it looked like Ridge Dow had
a pretty good opportunity there getting that again. No quitting
these rocks kits still you know, under just about six

(02:41:04):
minutes left in the game, Well, you still don't want
to take out your special teams. You still want to
have your first team kickoff return or hands team in
and that situation on an on side kick. And so
it looks like the Comments are going back with their
second group and maybe they'll have an opportunity in the backs.

(02:41:24):
I'm sure we're told two hands on the football, stay
in bounds, and you know they can take second efforts,
but boy, they've got to keep take their hands. And
there's nothing wrong with punting the football with probably less
than five minutes to go, there's six twenty seven to go.
Even if they don't pick up a first down, they
just have to get the clock moving. And you know,
I think the Rockets even have some of their second sin.

Speaker 2 (02:41:47):
So Trevor Kaplinger, freshman in at quarterback, up under center
and a handoff on a sweep up ahead to forty
to the forty five, trying to get a number. Is
that twenty seven? Gavin Lukart, Yes, number twenty seven, So

(02:42:08):
he's a freshman running back. I mean there's a ton
of luke Arts. There's a ton of Van Gundys.

Speaker 6 (02:42:17):
You know, it just there.

Speaker 2 (02:42:18):
There's all these names that you always see. It seems like, yep,
even back from the day I'm seeing an Elswick on here.

Speaker 6 (02:42:27):
Yeah, cam Elswick seventy two. I wonder if that's Vic's.

Speaker 2 (02:42:32):
Run to the left side, and that's enough for Matthew's
Hondakra first down across to the Rigdale forty five and
that's Bryden Lowry five, ten, sophomore, and I.

Speaker 8 (02:42:45):
Believe he's got his brother. Might has to be landing
or h that is. I thought there was another Lowry,
I think, so I have to look across here.

Speaker 2 (02:42:55):
There's a Corbin Lowry.

Speaker 6 (02:42:56):
Yeah, there you go, Ethan.

Speaker 2 (02:42:58):
There's a Garrett Lowry. Yeah, Garrett Lowry sixty two is
a family affair out here at Elgin had off straight
ahead and a nice game. They're still going forward up
to the thirty.

Speaker 8 (02:43:15):
That's twenty Chase Gillim. He's a freshman six to two hundred.

Speaker 6 (02:43:19):
Wow, he's a load going through there. And he picked
his knees up and picked up some yardies. So there's their.

Speaker 8 (02:43:25):
Future right there with h he's gonna take Van Gundy's
spot well.

Speaker 6 (02:43:31):
And there was steady number forty five.

Speaker 2 (02:43:33):
Van Gundy, and before Van Gundy was playing in that position,
lou Car, there was another lu Cart who was that
kind of bruising back that came.

Speaker 6 (02:43:42):
Through there like that. So I believe his number was thirty.

Speaker 2 (02:43:45):
Last yep here Matthews Hondaker first down, now pitched to
the right side. Oh a nice hard hitting. I'll tell
you what, lass America, both of them. Wow, they both
delivered a hit to each other. So that was twenty seven.
Gavin lukeart with a carry and then that Isaac lust

(02:44:05):
with its stop.

Speaker 6 (02:44:07):
That was brutal.

Speaker 7 (02:44:09):
Man.

Speaker 8 (02:44:09):
I heard it clear up here. Yeah, we have our
window open. But boy, I'll tell you, I hope. I'm
just glad both guys got up after that.

Speaker 2 (02:44:16):
Well, they both delivered a hit to each other, and
that was just that was good old football right there.
So a loss on that play second and twelve. I mean,
come on, coach, let's face it. There were hits back
in the day.

Speaker 6 (02:44:33):
That was a hit.

Speaker 2 (02:44:34):
I mean, I don't think I ever delivered a hit
like that, but I got delivered hits like that.

Speaker 6 (02:44:40):
And you're still here and I'm still here. I might
have had it back then.

Speaker 2 (02:44:44):
You didn't even think about a concussion, but I bet
you I probably had at least three.

Speaker 8 (02:44:48):
Well, you don't know what a suspension helmet is, and
for all you old timers out there, I remember wearing
a suspension helmet in.

Speaker 6 (02:44:55):
Junior high and I'll tell you what. Wow.

Speaker 8 (02:44:59):
Yeah, it's like it wasn't as bad as the leather helmets.
Well yeah, Jim Thorpe played, but it wasn't much better.

Speaker 6 (02:45:07):
I'm just glad the equipment is so much better now.

Speaker 2 (02:45:10):
Second down or third down and nine for the Comets.
Three twenty eight left in this game, and off on
the sweep to Zach Bauers and he's taken down hard
as he crossed the line of scrimmage. Or excuse me,
I'm sorry. Press and Russell.

Speaker 8 (02:45:29):
Yeah, freshman five six one five. They've got some guys.
I think the numbers are up this year from last year,
and uh, we've got it. Looks like they've got a
nice freshman group, nice sophomore group.

Speaker 6 (02:45:42):
So uh things are things are shaping up for the
Commets in the future.

Speaker 2 (02:45:49):
Eighteen freshmen on this team, Yes, that's I mean every
coach dreams of being able to get eighteen freshmen out
because you think, man our future, we can keep these
kids playing.

Speaker 8 (02:46:00):
There's nothing like experience. It's just you can't substitute it.
There's so many things that happened to you in a game,
especially defensively, that it's hard to teach. They have to
have it happen to them so they can get it corrected.
If you were ever an outside linebacker and got cracked
back on. And I know they have rules that you
can't do certain things, but boy, I'll tell you what, Uh,

(02:46:23):
it only takes one time to know how to defend
that the next time.

Speaker 2 (02:46:26):
But that happened to me my freshman year in practice,
and it was rich Oswald, who was probably the hardest
hitter on the team that year. That's one of those
It's funny that you said outside linebacker crack back because
that's exactly what happened.

Speaker 8 (02:46:41):
And you do remember it's always the corner's job to
call it out so that you know how to defend it.
And I'll tell you what, just so many things situation
football that the kids who have played a lot, You
could tell with Harrison and some of these older players
on the Commons team, they've been through a lot, and
they've they've experienced you know, Lust has been out there

(02:47:03):
through four years, and uh, they know how to they
know how to play so and they teach the younger
players well.

Speaker 2 (02:47:09):
And it looks like this team is very united. You
talked about last week with Harding's whole team is engaged.
Everybody's right there watching everything on the sideline that isn't
in the game. Uh. And that's what you want to
see as a coach, back to pass down the middle incomplete,
and that was I see who that was intended for.

(02:47:32):
But Caden Parrish backing at quarterback for the Rockets.

Speaker 8 (02:47:35):
Yeah, Coach Chapman getting his younger players in Also, he's
realistically realistic to know that he's got, you know, eight
more games in the season, and he's got to get
his guys out, especially they have had several guys with
these cramps in their legs and getting those younger kids
in there playing against the Elgins younger players.

Speaker 2 (02:47:57):
Second down and ten at the Ridge twenty two yard
line to twenty three left in this game.

Speaker 6 (02:48:04):
I'm not sure we're going to make it the post game,
are we.

Speaker 2 (02:48:06):
Well, it's actually it's only nine to twenty nine. I
mean it feels like it should later. Uh, but it's
not rolling out to the left and coming up ahead
and a nice hard tackle there. But again with the carry,
Caden Parrish decided to keep it himself and was able

(02:48:27):
to make a couple of yards, but brings up third down.

Speaker 8 (02:48:29):
Yeah, freshman Gavin lu Cart five eleven, one fifty put
a shot on him and brought him down, and now
the Rockets are forced with third and about seven. Important
thing for the Comics is the clock keeps moving. With
one forty eight to go and counting down. It's take

(02:48:52):
number eleven for Algon Owen Crepps, freshman six three, one
sixty is in the game. I mean, you gotta be
he's got to be a basketball player too. Well, that's
why I was gonna say.

Speaker 2 (02:49:04):
The coaches for the football team are excited to have
him out here, by betch of the basketball team can't
wait to get him out there either. He looks like
a man out there. Third down, hand off to the
right side, now cutting back to the left, up ahead
of the thirty. But a penalty flag. I think that's
going to be a late Well, no, it might be
a hold.

Speaker 6 (02:49:24):
It's a hole.

Speaker 8 (02:49:25):
I thought it was a guy from Ridgedale, guy from
Algimer down on the ground.

Speaker 6 (02:49:28):
It was old. One of them wouldn't let the other
went up. So yuess they're gonna call a hold.

Speaker 2 (02:49:32):
On that river Valley and Madison tied at fourteen in
the fourth quarter, Upper Sandusky twenty seven, Mount Gilly at eighteen,
Ontario twenty one to seven in the fourth quarter over
Centerberg Liberty Union, with the lead over North Union now
thirty two to twenty eight, still thirty nine to fourteen

(02:49:54):
Ashland overhearding. Final score at Pleasant Hope will allowed and
with the victory thirty six to fifteen over the Spartans,
So that's the Spartans first loss of the season. Gallion
ends up beating Carrie fourteen to eight, Gallon starting the
season two to zero. That would be Carrie's first loss
of the season. Mohawk wins big over Cardington fifty four

(02:50:16):
to six East Knox. In the final victory over Winford
fifty or twenty five to twelve Northmore forty nine South
Central nothing long pass down field incomplete. I like the
arm there though by Caden Parrish.

Speaker 8 (02:50:35):
Yeah, real nice throw down the field just overthrew them
a little bit. A couple guys got in for the
comments Billy Lingrel freshman six foot two oh five linemen
and number seventy two cam Elswick freshman six two one ninety.
So they're getting some freshmen and sophomores in late in
the game here, getting them a little playing time under

(02:50:57):
the lights.

Speaker 2 (02:50:58):
And I don't know, I'm guess just because of numbers,
but I could be wrong. There probably is not a
JV game tomorrow, So this is their JV game back
to punt Ridgedale that comes down at the forty four
yard line and rolls past the fifty to the elgin

(02:51:21):
forty nine thirty seconds left. All Elgind has to do
is kneel it out, maybe run a play, but more
than likely kneel it out, you know. And it's this
is what the comments wanted. They wanted that bounce back.
They felt like they kind of handed a game away
to Cardington last week. Not taking anything away from Cardington,

(02:51:42):
but there were a lot of turnovers, a lot of mistakes,
and still with under two minutes left they had a
chance to win that game. So it was really important
for them, in coach Winslow, to come out here and
make a statement in this game.

Speaker 6 (02:51:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (02:51:56):
I think early in the game the comments, you know,
physically dominated them, and I think it kind of, uh,
the Rockets kind of woke up a little bit there
on that, but they were just frustrated because defensively, they
were on the field the whole first quarter and a
lot of the second quarter. In the Elgin was pretty
much uh dominant in the first half, running the football

(02:52:18):
and doing what they wanted to do. So but my
haad goes off to the to the to the Rockets
for fighting and playing the whole game really hard and
uh and also the.

Speaker 2 (02:52:30):
Comments and this is not the end of the season
for the Rockets. There is still a lot to play for. Uh,
you know, first game of the league schedule, so they're
starting the league off zero to one. But this is
probably one of your tougher opponents from here on out

(02:52:50):
until you maybe get to a Waynesfield Goshen, Hardened, Hardened
Northern's pretty good too, but really Richdale can make a
run now possible, get themselves right in the playoff position,
maybe even sneak in as a maybe tie for eleague title.
So the final score here at Elgin. Elgin went the

(02:53:12):
victory twenty seven to eight over Ridgdale, and it was
not quite as dominant a game as it was last
season for Elgin. I think Ridgdale definitely hung in there
a lot longer this season than they did last season,
but the physicality, like kind of like last year definitely

(02:53:36):
leaned Elgin's way.

Speaker 8 (02:53:38):
Yeah, I mean, I really like the leadership of Harrison.
I like in fact they you know, I think coach
Winslow had a good game plan of starting off strong
offensively by putting Harrison a quarterback.

Speaker 6 (02:53:51):
Like I said, he gets to handle the ball every play.

Speaker 8 (02:53:54):
And then once they got that fourteen point lead, if
you remember, they substituted Harrison for the other quarterback sophomore
and moved Harrison to running back where he's probably more comfortable,
and they continued tomorch on and score two more times.
So you know they coach had a good game playing
there to just get the league quick and let the

(02:54:16):
defense do their work.

Speaker 2 (02:54:18):
And it was a very very well played game. There
was a stretch there where the penalties did kind of
stack up, and I think both teams, but especially Elgin
I think more so because there were quite a bit
of penalties for Elgin. I think that's one of those
things Coach Winslow is going to be like, look, guys,
it's two games in a row where we were shooting

(02:54:41):
ourselves in the foot, and this time it didn't hurt us.

Speaker 6 (02:54:43):
Too much.

Speaker 2 (02:54:44):
But we can't keep doing this every week. And I
think it's going to be an emphasis for both teams,
but especially for Elgin.

Speaker 8 (02:54:51):
Yeah, I see coach Chapman down there talking to his
troops down on the thirty yard line on the middle
of the field. They're in the thirty yard line and
the common bell going off. All the traditional stuff here
going on, and you just have been in up both
positions where you were able to ring the bell and

(02:55:11):
also address your team after a tough loss. And like
I say, my hat goes off to these coaches. They
spend many, many hours and when you don't come up
with a win, it's tough. But the sun's going to
come up tomorrow for these guys and we wish them
the best of luck the rest of the season.

Speaker 2 (02:55:29):
So we're going to need to come up with a
player of the game. And when I look, I will
go through the recap of the scoring first. Maybe that
kind of gives some insight. And the first quarter, at
the seven fourteen mark, Elgin took the initial lead a
fifteen yard touchdown run by Brendan Lukart. Two point conversion
was no good made the score Elgin six. Ridgdale nothing.

(02:55:53):
In the second quarter, at the eleven eleven mark three
yard touchdown run by Rhodes, two point conversion was good
by Lust extended the Elgin lead fourteen to nothing. That
was it for the scoring in the first half. Then
in the third period, fifty six seconds left, a fifteen

(02:56:14):
yard touchdown run by Brennan Luke Art and pat was
good by Bailey Abbott and that made the score twenty
one to nothing, Elgin on top. Then the fourth period,
at the eight oh one mark, three yard touchdown run
by Harrison, his only score of the evening, pat was
no good extended the Elgin lead to twenty seven to nothing.

(02:56:35):
Then with six twenty eight left, six twenty seven left
in the game, Ridgdale gets on the board Townshend with
a one yard touchdown run two point conversion was good
and that's how we arrived at our final score of
twenty seven to eight. So if we go by scoring,
say it we see Brennan Lukehart would be and I

(02:56:56):
would say overall, you could say Harris when he ran
at quarterback, running in the backfield, he was very good tonight.
I also but I also think the play that was
really working for him was that counter with the counter
with Luke Cart and that's that's where I would go too.
So our Pillar Credit Union player the game is Brendan Lukeart.

(02:57:20):
I wish I had stats to tell you how many
yards he ran for, but it was at least close
to one hundred, if not over and two scores tonight
and then the fay he Bank play of the game. Boy,
that's hard to narrow down because there was no real
big play. I do think that first touchdown, that fifteen

(02:57:40):
yard Brendan Lucart touchdown with seven fourteen left in the
first period kind of really set the tone for the night.
So nobody touched so that would be the fay he
Bank play of the game. Seven fourteen in the first
quarter Elgin Brendan Lucart with the fifteen yard touchdown run

(02:58:00):
for Elgin. So we thank Fahi Bank for coming on
as a sponsor for the play of the game. Coach,
you have any final thoughts for tonight.

Speaker 8 (02:58:09):
It's been great being out here at Elgin and watching
the comments and the rockets. What two great communities getting
together tonight. And if you missed the game tonight and
turned on the radio towards the end and hopefully maybe
next week if you like football, we're gonna be over
at Pleasant and we just want to wish the comments

(02:58:33):
in the Rockets keep them healthy. We always tell the
coaches always when I talk to them, keep them healthy,
and good luck to the next game.

Speaker 2 (02:58:40):
All right, well, thanks for joining us tonight here at Elgin.
Next week the Comments will stay home to take on
North Baltimore, while Ridgdale will be hosting Ridgemont, And like
coach said, we will be at Pleasant next week as
the Spartans host Whitehall Yearling. Now stick around for the
scoreboard show Racelyn Graver. We'll cover all the area games
plus talk about the latest in college and pro football.

(02:59:03):
And he has a special guest in there with him tonight,
and it's someone that I know that I enjoy quite
a bit, so I hope you guys do too, and
we'll join the conversation when we get there again. The
final score tonight Elgin twenty seven, Ridgedale eight. So for
Coach Couzio here with me and Raceland back at the station,
we say so long and hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

(02:59:26):
Good night, everyone, showers and thunderstorm.

Speaker 7 (02:59:28):
Chances are going to remain with us here through much
of the weekend.

Speaker 14 (02:59:31):
Cooling trend on the way for next week as temperatures
will cool into the seventies to kick off the new week.

Speaker 7 (02:59:36):
Scattered thunderstorms eighty one here this afternoon
