Speaker 1 (00:02):
Magic ninety five nine.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Hey, good morning, it is Paul James and a little
bit of background music for us this morning, as we
are going to spend some time today with a TV
legend by the name of Mark Price. And Mark you
may know as Skippy from Family Ties. Mark coming to
Marion to be at the Marian Palace Theater along with
(00:24):
Steve Heidner. He played Kenny Banya on Seinfeld and they
do stand up comedy and they're coming to Marion on Friday,
November fifteenth at seven point thirty with the Where Are
They Wow tour and Mark welcome to the show, My friend,
how are you?
Speaker 3 (00:42):
I don't know if I'm a legend, seize the legend.
I'll give him that. I think I'm more of a
a legend of Jason. I'm the neighbor of the legend.
I'm a pseudoelebrity.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Well, I'll tell you I grew up. You and I
are about the same age. I grew up watching Family
Ties and I got married and my wife and I
used to watch Seinfeld all the time, So we are
very familiar with the things that you guys have done
on TV. But you are bringing your comedy show to
Marian and I'm excited about this because, from what I understand,
(01:15):
this is kind of a while your part of the
show is going to be really a lot of fun
for folks that are Gen X, grew up in the
seventies and eighties and all that. Talk about your show
for a minute.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Yeah, and Steve's a boomer too, so we got the
roast of the generation there you go. Yeah, sometimes we
have a younger person, you know, hosting, and then we
really do cover it all, you know. But Steve is hysterical. Yeah,
I really enjoy hanging out with him. Not only the
great on stage, but he just keeps me laughing during
(01:51):
the tour when we're in the car heading to the
next gig and that kind of thing, just non stop rolling.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
I love it. So so looking forward to your show.
Obviously you did Family Ties and all of that stuff.
Talk a little bit about getting started. I understand that
your father was a comedian. You were doing stand up
comedy in your teens back in the early eighties, and
then family Ties came about.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Talk about that.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Well, we moved out to Hollywood, my dad and I
when I was about twelve years old, and the idea
was that he was going to get on a sick
hump because he had performed since the twenties. He's been
on Ed Sullivan many times, and he's done all kinds
of amazing things. He was on the radio with Fred
Allen in nineteen forty. Do you even know who Fred
(02:41):
Allen is?
Speaker 1 (02:41):
I do? I do? I do?
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Yeah? Yeah, him and Jack Benny were the two biggest
things in radio. And that's back in the day when
people would sit around and watch the radio. Yeah, they
didn't have anything else to watch. Anyway, he got really
famous and he's done it all. Worked with Sammy Davis Junior,
and he wrote with Lenny Bruce, and he performed at
(03:06):
the first integrated comedy show in the South and doctor
Martin Luther King was there and that kind of thing.
Amazing stuff. You couldn't even go over all the credit.
There wouldn't be time to go over all the stuff
he did as full, full career. And he had me
when he was fifty yeah, which now, of course that
(03:29):
I'm in my fifties, I respected so much. I didn't
have a clue back at the time. Now I'm like,
oh my god, I would have killed me.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Yeah, absolutely, yeah, no, I totally get that. So how
did the Family Times deal come about? You guys were
in Hollywood, you know, you were doing the comedy thing.
Your dad was trying to get on a sitcom and
then it just showed up.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
How'd that work out?
Speaker 3 (03:52):
So my dad was friends with everybody in show business,
and in those days, these to have older people on
TV and in the movie like, we forget about that now,
but that was commonplace. So his good friend played on
Laverne and Shirley. He played the grumpy father of Laverne,
mister Defosio.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Yeah, Frank Delfso yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Phill Foster was his name. An all time comedian, not
unlike my dad. Good friends with my dad, and those
guys all kind of knew each other. You know, there
weren't as many comedians as there are now, you know,
so they really did. They were friends and they played
golf and they went to the Friars Club roasts together
and that kind of thing. And so when I came
out to visit, Phil had me come over to Paramount
(04:36):
Studios to where they were taping Laverne and Shirley in
Happy Days and Mork and Mindy and Bosom Buddies and
blah blah blah, and he had me hang out with
him and it was a thrill, he could tell. I
loved it so much watching them work on the script
and figuring out how to make the physical bit happen
and stuff. And so he invited me to stay all
(04:56):
week and I walked around. He said, this is a
nine to eleven worlds. So he said, if anybody gives
any trouble, you just tell them you're Phil Foster's nephew.
And somehow that worked. Wow, I was everywhere. Yeah, Tom
Hanks came over. He saw a little kid on the
side of the set and he came over and he
started juggling and doing stick for me and introduced himself.
(05:17):
Nobody knew who he was yet, right, you know, Robin
Williams was the biggest star in the country and there
I was watching him make work and mindy, it was.
It was an incredible experience, it really was, and I
credit it with a lot. I mean, and I had
these other stand up comedy is something I'd been a
part of my whole life, you know. And in fact,
(05:38):
I went on the MERV Griffin Show when I was
fourteen years old as a little stand up comedian, but
acting in stickcoms. That was a whole new thing for me,
and I fell in love, and so Phil Foster said, hey,
you want to hang out all week? You know, go ahead.
And then it was a couple of years later there
I was in the same studio auditioning at first for
(05:59):
Faan We ties at Paramount Studios right where they did
Bosom Buddies. Yeah, and then and then they invited me
back to do more. And the rest is his story.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
It is his story, there's no question.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
So to our listeners, guys, if all of these names
and all of these shows and all of this is
familiar to you, you will love this show that's coming up.
It's called where Are They Wow. The tour features Mark
Skippy Price and Steve Heidner. Steve was Kenny on Seinfeld
and they're coming to Marion on Friday, November fifteenth at
(06:37):
seven thirty and they are bringing this stand up comedy show.
You don't want to miss it. Ticket prices start at
twenty nine dollars. You can go to Marionpalace dot org
to secure your ticket or stop buy the box office
and get your tickets because these are going to go fast.
I'm really excited about the show and One of the
things I wanted to talk to you a little bit about,
Mark is that you still are having a wonderful relationship
(07:00):
with everybody from Family Ties, and your tour actually is
helping to raise money for the Michael J.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Fox Foundation. Talk a little bit about that in your
mission there.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
Well, he's a hero of mine and remains an inspiration
from the first moment I met him, when nobody knew
who he was, and he was the coolest and funniest
guy I had ever met. But then it was just
a few years later he was the biggest star in
the country. I watched the transformation. He always stayed real
and cool and treated me like a little brother. Didn't
(07:34):
treat me like a kid, you know. He actually it
was cool. I'm not that much younger than I don't
want to make him feel that old, but just enough
where you know, it could have been easy for him
to just ignore me, and Mallory did, yes, but a lot.
But no, he really took me under his wing, and
(07:55):
I'm really forever grateful. So we raised money for his foundation,
which is a wonderful foundation on the tour, and hey,
Marion could be where Family Ties took place very well.
The Columbus, Ohio area. It was I remember originally in
the show, people might not know this. It was just Keaton, Ohio.
(08:16):
It was just a fictional place, nowhere specific, just somewhere
in Ohio. But then as the show got popular, or
actually right before the show got really popular, the different
cities vie for their to be the one. I don't
know if you know this. People were sending jerseys and
cake and food and stuff they were sending like Barogi's
(08:39):
and things that were from their cities to try to
woo over the producers to make the decision. So I
don't know what the mayor of Columbus sent, but it
worked well.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
And what's really cool is and I grew up in
Columbus and so it was an attachment. And I actually
did stuff at WOSU, which was the public television station
and still is in Columbus. So in our world when
we would go to you know, to the station at
Ohio State, we would be like, you know, family ties
is here.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
You know.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
It was kind of it became sort of a thing,
and people knew that I did things at WOSU, and
some people actually bought into it thinking that you know,
Michael Gross was actually there, right, I mean they played
the game, but really, I mean that that is really
cool that And you're doing a show in Columbus too, right,
I amderstand.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
I yeah, I'm touring around the area. In fact, last
weekend it was in Steve and I were in three
cities in Michigan. Yeah, I'm in New Jersey right now.
I'm going to do some stuff this weekend without Stephen.
Then we meet up again him and I in Illinois
next weekend. So we tour together sometimes and then sometimes
(09:51):
we tour solo, or sometimes he goes off to Europe
on vacation and stuff like that was his wife.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
Yeah, oh that's cool. I love that.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
So yeah, so now I go with my dog and
I go with my day.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
You go with your dog because you are married time bachelor, right, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
Absolutely, I've never had any kids. That's why I still
have all my hair.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
But is it gray?
Speaker 3 (10:15):
Not yet?
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Not yet?
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Just for just for men.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
As much as we know, I understand, why do.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
They call it just for men? You really put that
stuff on just for the women.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Really, You're right, that is a really good point. So
I understand the show features some physical comedy.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
You really interact with the audience talk a little bit
about that.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
So well, I think we're doing something special at the
Merion for for next Friday night. It's not the next Friday.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
Night, a couple of weeks down the road, November.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
November Friday, whatever that is. And it's what is the
date again, It's November fifteenth.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
It's the fifteenth.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
Friday, November fifteenth, one night only. We're going to do
something special. We're going to do my Dancing with the
Stars audition tape. Really, so someone of the audience is
there's someone listening right now. They love to dance, they
live to dance. Come on and volunteer yourself and then
let's show them what we've got. I want that. I
want that judge, you know the judge from Dancing with
the Stars, as a few of them, but you know
(11:14):
the one that says, Skippy, you up beautiful. Yes, I
love the way you move your body. You make that
feel anyway, I'm looking for the good review from him.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Well one, I hope you do.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
That's a good man, right, yeah, anyway, that's good stuff.
So Mark, you are bringing the show and looking forward
to it. Friday November fifteenth, seven thirty. It is sponsored
by Whirlpool and we do get started with the show
at seven thirty. Ticket price to start at twenty nine
dollars Marionpalace dot org to secure your tickets. And I
(11:48):
assume Mark Skippy Price that you have been doing a
lot of shows at some beautiful theaters. Wait till you
see the Marion Palace Theater. It is a historic theater
that has been complete redone. It might be one of
the coolest and neatest places you've ever done a show.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
Well, I live for that, I do. And you know,
there's a good chance my dad played there. Oh, you know,
that's the amazing thing. That's the amazing thing with these
old theaters, and I feel a connection. He couldn't have
played every old theator in America, but certainly on the
East and I guess you guys are considered the Midwest.
He did so much of it that any theater of
it was really popular back in the day. There's a
(12:26):
good chance that he played there. You know, my dad
was and here's the name. A lot of your listeners
are just gonna not know, but he was Rudy Valley's protege. Wow, yeah, yeah,
my dad did it all. I'm telling you. He did it.
He did it all. But you know what, my mom
hates it because I always leave her out. So let
me just take a brief moment to just say my
mom was fantastically talented. She was a singer. The two
(12:49):
of them used to work together. Right in those days,
they didn't have three comedians on the same show. They
had a singer and a comedian. That was common, and
so they would bring me out when I was born.
I was a little I was a cheap device for
applause at the end of the show that they would
bring out the baby and the audience would go crazy,
and that's how I got hooked.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
I love it.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
Anyway. My mom was hugely talented and recorded with famous
producers and was on bandstand and played in Vegas and
all over. And then she hated show business. Really, she
really hated it, and she hated my father, and so
they got divorced and she became a cop. Really, how
(13:34):
about that?
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Yeah, that's a change her career.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
One of the first female officers on the force in
the seventies. Pretty incredible, that isn't I'm proud of her now.
When I was a kid, I was embarrassed. My friends
would come over and they see the police uniform in
the handcuffs and I'd be like, Oh, my mom's a stripper,
kind of like my mom feels about me. Now your
son is touring the Midwest as a comedian. He joined
(14:00):
El Taita Wow.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Where are they Wow?
Speaker 2 (14:06):
The tour is coming to the Marryon Palace Theater Friday,
November fifteenth at seven point thirty featuring Mark Skippy Price
and Steven Heidner. It will be at the Palace. Ticket
start at twenty nine dollars. You can get tickets at
Marionpalace dot org. And Mark, I feel like I cut
you off. You were going to say something.
Speaker 3 (14:23):
There, Well, that's all just it's Gold Jerry Gold. That's
his famous cat frae. Yeah, and his show is Gold.
It really is. It's so funny, and hanging out with
him might even be more funny. I just I love
working with Steve. I really do well.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
And it's really cool because you know so many people
you know, especially in the nineties, watched the Seinfeld Show
and they looked forward to the comedy between Jerry and
Steven obviously Kenny and the show and it was just,
I mean, they're battles there everything, but it was so funny,
so I expect that realness from him as well. So
(15:00):
I think it'd be a great show I'm looking forward to.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
We both know Jerry. Of course he knows Jerry worked
with them Salong and Jerry loved him. They put him
in the finale. He put him into the when they
did the Curb Your Enthusiasm reunion there was Kenny Banya
there again. Jerry loves Steve and and I love Jerry.
I was fortunate enough to go on tour with Jerry
Seinfeld before he had the Seinfeld TV show. Really yes
(15:26):
and now. Back in those days, he was already the
most famous comedian in the United States, him and Jay Leno.
So don't get me wrong. It wasn't like he needed
the loan or nobody knew who he was. He was
already as successful as somebody could get in comedy. But
he didn't have a TV series and he wanted one.
(15:46):
All those guys wanted one. They all you know, Drew Kerry,
Tim Allen, name a guy that ended up Paul Reiser.
I met all these guys before they had their series,
and I had a series. They wanted to know about it.
They came to He used to gravitate to me when
we were at the improv or whatever, and if Paul
Reiser even came to the set and checked out how
(16:08):
we did family ties and stuff like that. Anyway, But Jerry,
Jerry is a he's it's a mind blower because Jerry
he the way he works and the way he writes
and the way he is disciplined. And he wasn't the
kind that drank and partied and did all that stuff.
There's a lot of great comedians that didn't do that,
(16:30):
so don't get me wrong, but Jerry was more of
a straight laced kind of guy. But man, so funny,
so capable.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Oh absolutely yeah. I had a chance to meet Paul
Raisner a year or so ago he did his comedy thing.
Is a lot of the guys doing that, I mean,
you know, I know Seinfeld's back doing a lot of
different things, and of course he just had the pop
tard deal.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
You know, Riisner's torn around doing his stand up.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
Is that kind of a lot of that. I could
answer that. We're not back to anything. We never left.
That's what we love to do. Stand up comedy is
our first love. A TV show, hosting his talk show,
all that stuff, is great because it lets us do
our stand up comedy more. That's why we love it. Honestly,
I can speak for all those guys. Stand up comedy
(17:13):
is in front of a live audience. That's the first
love I've done some movies and stuff. In fact, it's
Halloween now and I'm in a movie called Trick or
Treat with Ozzy Osbourne and Gene Simmons. And there's a
great heavy metal soundtrack from a group called Fastway, and
every Halloween it comes up. There's going to be a
screening this year in Chicago. I'm going to be at it.
And there's at the Whiskey in Hollywood on Sun simple
(17:37):
of are the famous Whiskey and Go Go Club. There's
actually going to be a heavy metal group paying homage
to our movie with the soundtrack and the music and stuff.
It's incredible. And there's a new horror movie that I'm
in now it's all these years later, cut to decades later,
cut the fifty pounds later, yea, And they say that
(17:58):
not being in front of the camera and ten pounds
have you heard that?
Speaker 1 (18:01):
Yeah, well I've heard that.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
Yeah. It turns out not being in front of the
camera for the last three decades plus added fifty pounds.
Speaker 1 (18:07):
Yeah for me, but I get that.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
The new the new improve Me, Extra Chunky, New Improved
Kippie Extra Chunky is in a movie called Witchy Ways
and they're just finishing editing it now. They had their
first screening. It'll be on platforms hopefully before the end
of the year, maybe just after the New year. And
it's exciting. First time I've acted in a long time.
I'm not the I'm still the annoying neighbor. Yeah, so
(18:32):
it wasn't that big a stretch. But I'm not the
monster and I'm not the killer. But I am the
antagonist in this movie, which is something I've never done before.
And so the characters are real.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
They that is really cool. That is really cool.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
And of course you're going to be bringing that and
that stand up comedy that you talk about as being
what you all do everything for to the marian Palace
Theater once again.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
Guys.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
It is Friday, Nova, November fifteenth, seven thirty Ticket start
at twenty nine dollars. Get them today at Marionpalace dot org.
The show is called Where Are They Wow? The tour
featuring Mark Price, Skippy and Steve Heidner, who played Kenny
Banya on Seinfeld coming to Marion on November fifteenth, and Mark,
(19:19):
thank you so much for the time today.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
I really appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
Love your guts, Paul, that's the opposite of hate your guts.
It's a very loving, positive thing.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
I love that.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
I love that, and I want to wish you guys
a wonderful day there and look forward to seeing everybody
on Friday the fifteenth.
