(00:00):
You're listening to. She is thevoice the female alternative artists that you need
to know. Here's your hosts AWarden All ninety eight seven, LA's new
alternative you're listening to. She isthe voice and it is my pleasure to
have back with us again. Mariafrom the Marias, Hello, thank you
so much for having me. I'mso glad to have you here on the
(00:20):
day that your album is out.Yes, so exciting. Submarine came out
today, second album from the Marias. And how excited are you to have
your baby out? I'm so excited, but I'm also nervous. It's like
mixed emotions. I'm excited that ourbaby's finally out, but I'm like,
I want to protect it at allcosts. I believe it. I believe
(00:43):
it. I mean, I feellike when I talk to artists when they
put out an album, it isit's like releasing your baby to the world.
You're getting opinions. People are,you know, judging, and usually
it's obviously like the fans are excitedand it's good stuff. But yeah,
percent yeah. I was actually talkingto my therapist about it because I was
telling her. I was like,I'm scared, like I don't you know,
(01:04):
I don't want to be perceived.I don't want this body of work
that like is me being so vulnerableand honest to like, you know,
people to like tear it apart oryou know, have you know, mixed
emotions about But and she said that, you know, releasing this album is
almost like being a mom, Likeyou can be a mom without being a
(01:26):
mom, And I feel that way. It's almost it's like motherhood. Yeah,
because you create, it's like agestation period. You're creating something and
like finally you have to cut theumbilical cord and it's out in the world
and it becomes its own thing,it becomes its own person, and you
want to protect it. But atthe end of the day, you just
(01:48):
have to like let go and andlearn to be okay with you know.
Yep, whatever happens well by allaccounts what I have seen and what I've
read, it's all incredibly positive. And I have listened to several tracks and
the first child from the album, run Your Mouth, is the song we've
(02:10):
been playing here for a while.Let's talk about that song. Yes,
so run your Mouth. It's funnybecause the first single off of Cinema was
Hush and this one is run yourMouth. Yes, oh, but that
they both kind of thematically talk aboutlike like just leave me alone. I
don't want to talk, and kindof like looking back, you know,
(02:34):
when when we write songs, likewe're very much in the moment and like
we don't have any intention except forjust like being honest and open and like
whatever happens with the song happens, and so a lot of the time,
like I'll write these lyrics and thenI'll look back and be like, oh,
that meant this, and that meantthat, but in the moment,
it doesn't click. So with runyour Mouth, I was listening back to
(02:59):
it and I was like, oh, yeah, like this is me being
very conflict avoidant. Like this isme being very like I don't want to
talk about anything. I don't wantyou to run your mouth, Like all
you do is want to talk, and I just don't want to, you
know, I don't want to dealwith it. I don't want to deal
with the conflict. I think Iwas just very at the time, like
in survival mode and like didn't Yeah, I just didn't want any conflict,
(03:23):
Like I would just push it undergot a rug and yeah, so that's
kind of what the song is aboutme being conflict avoidant. I also wanted
to I saw on your Instagram yousaid you made the childhood video of your
dreams. Yeah that song. Tellme why? Tell me? Tell me
why why you said that? Yeah, we wanted to draw I mean even
(03:46):
through like cinema, Like we weredrawing a lot of inspiration from like nineties
like Y two K, sort oflike music videos. And you know,
I grew up in like the Ytwo K era of like Brittany and TRL
and all of that, and sowith run your Mouth, I was like,
let's like bring that back, like, let's make a music video that
is from that could like belong inthat era. And and I am obsessed
(04:12):
with it. I love all thecolors and I love the energy. And
one of my best friends, BethanyVargus, directed it, and she's just
she always, you know, elevateslike any idea that we have. She's
like, how can we elevate this? And she does it so beautifully.
So I'm really proud of it.Yeah it is. It's a really fun
video. All ninety eight seven LA'snew Alternative We are here with Maria singer
(04:35):
of the band The Marias, Andthis is actually the second time you've been
on She is the Voice. Today. Your new album came out, Submarine,
and let's talk about the imagery.Let's talk about it's beautiful, it's
it's it seems like there's a themeof underwater, and I know you had
(04:55):
that idea a long time ago todo that for this album, but yeah,
tell tell us about that. Yeah, we started teasing honestly the underwater
idea or Coachelli set, but thematicallyfor the album, like it's it's an
album that I really devoted myself andreally committed to being just as honest as
(05:17):
I could, which was really hard. And it's the first album that Josh
and I we were romantic partners throughoutSubmarine and throughout Cinema, and this was
the first project that we weren't that, and so it was really difficult,
like at the start of this writingprocess for us. But when Submarine,
(05:41):
like the concept of like being underwater, I feel like fits so well in
like what we were going through becausewe were like discovering almost like discovering a
new iteration of our relationship. Andso like with Submarine, I just imagine
like being very very like almost claustrophobicin a space, but in the ocean,
(06:05):
which is like ninety percent of itis like undiscovered, So it's like
being alone in a space that's notdiscovered yet. Yeah, kind of how
I saw us going into this albumand discovering like the new part of like
this new evolution of our relationship.Cool playing live, I know, is
(06:25):
something that the band. I mean, you guys are amazing live. You
have two shows coming up in LosAngeles sold out at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery,
which is such a cool place tosee music, live music. Have
you seen shows there before? Isaw one show there James Blake, and
(06:46):
it was beautiful and I just lovedthe entire experience, Like I loved walking
to the stage through the cemetery andit was a full moon and like the
palm trees. It was just likereally magical. And then yeah, I
mean seeing seeing the show just outsidelike it was it was. It was
amazing. So when we were thinkingabout where do we want to play in
(07:09):
our hometown, that was the firstplace that came. That's what I was
going to ask, is was thisthe band's idea? Yes, So all
the guys they were born and raisedin LA and so they've been going to
Hollywood forever, like since yeah forever. Yeah, and yeah, so that
was their first first choice, andI was like, Okay, I need
to check it out first before Icommit to this. Yes, yes,
(07:31):
so I did, and I hadan amazing experience of the James Blake show.
So yeah, I've seen several showsthere, and for listeners who haven't
been, it's crazy because you literallycan park and there's gravestones, like right,
it sounds right there, and somereally famous people are buried there and
(07:51):
it's wild. And seeing live musicwhere you're going to play because there's the
mausoleum and and like there's a placewhere you can play inside, but you
guys are outside in the big grassyinolearea and it's incredible. They sell alcohol,
you can have food there, andit's just an experience and it's a
(08:11):
vibe. Yeah, I can't wait. We wanted it to almost feel like
a little mini festival, like we'vealways had this dream of like having our
own festival, and so this islike, well, let's like plan into
that idea a little bit and makeit so we'll have like, you know,
taco stands, and I don't tryto try to make it like a
really fun experience for people here. The fans are going to love that.
(08:33):
I can't wait for that. So, yes, the Maria is sold out.
If you don't have your tickets, sorry, they're sold out August twenty
second and twenty third, and you'reheaded to Mexico City very soon for four
shows. That's gonna be insane.Yeah, it's the first like place where
we're playing the Submarine songs live. But we wanted it to feel like a
(08:56):
celebration of it. I mean itlike those shows are two weeks after the
album, you know, in twoweeks, and but we honestly like didn't
want to celebrate it with anyone elselike Mexico. The fans in Mexico have
always been like so sweet and sosupportive, and yeah, it's a really
special place for us, so Iimagine it is. And for people that
(09:22):
might not be familiar with The Maria'smusic. You sing on this album,
You've got a couple songs you singin Spanish, and that's kind of been
something that you've always done. Someof the songs are in English, somewhere
in Spanish and let's talk about that. For I mean, it's something that
I grew up in the US,but I was born in Puerto Rico.
(09:45):
Both of my parents you know, are Hispanic and speak Spanish at the house,
and culturally like you know, yeah, I mean, I'm Latin,
but I was raised here. Yes, And so both languages and like both
cultures like make up who I amand make up my experience of just being
me. And so the first songthat I wrote was in Spanish, and
(10:09):
then the second song was in English, and then the third was in Spanish
and then you know, so itwas just it's something that's always just come
natural to me because of its It'show I was raised. Yep. But
it's really fun and and I lovethat, Like the guys are all open
to that part of who we are, and they will sing harmonies in Spanish
(10:31):
without like knowing a word of whatthey're singing about, but they'll sing it
anyway, and they'll they'll like embraceit when we're with my family, they
just like embrace the culture, embracethe food. And yeah, so I
love I love being both. Yeah. No, and I love it too.
Because You've got such a diverse fanbase, you know, you're pulling
(10:54):
from. I think there's fans thatreally are drawn to the fact that you
are singing in Spanish and some ofthe songs. It's it's really cool to
see, and especially in Los Angeleswhere a lot of the you know,
over half the market is Spanish.Yeah, so very cool. Let's talk
about So we played run Your Mouthearlier. Why don't you tell me a
(11:16):
couple other songs on this album thatjust means something special to you that you're
particularly excited about. Yeah. Imean they're all they're all our babies.
We're excited about all of them. But I think one that I'm really excited
about, le Joseti, is oneof them in Spanish, and it just
(11:37):
reminds me of like, you know, I of being far from my family
and like how how difficult that issometimes and sometimes and you know, I'm
the only one in my family thatlives in La And where is the rest
of your family in Puerto Rico andGeorgia and New York and Spain. Yeah,
(12:01):
but my parents, my parents,my dad lives in Puerto Rico and
yeah, so it's it's a fartrip from La Yeah, and you know,
as they get older, like itjust it really does weigh on me,
you know, to be far fromthem. And they're obviously really proud
of me and like understand me,you know, living here and and doing
(12:22):
doing what I do, but itdoes weigh on me being far from them.
So the song I remember, rightafter I wrote it, I sent
it to my dad and he goeslike, this song is for me.
You wrote this about me because itsays you know Lejosti translates to far from
you. So how beautiful. Yeah, it reminds me of my family when
I sing that song. Well, they must be so proud of you.
(12:45):
I mean just the success of youand the band. I mean they almost
just I bet when they come tothe shows. It's really fun. Yeah,
it's it's really fun because like neitherof them, like there's nobody in
my family that even is remotely closeto the me industry. Like my mom
is an ESOL teacher and my dad'sa mechanic and you know, so all
(13:05):
these milestones they just kind of werelike, oh, that's cool, you
know, but they don't understand.Really, They're like, oh, Wendy
do montricos, Like you sold alot of CDs, right, I'm like
Yeah, we've sold a lot ofCDs. That's so cute. Yeah,
and I kind of love that because, yeah, I think it keeps you
grounded kind of for sure. Yeah. And they must come to the shows
(13:28):
and be like, oh wow, like you're amongst thousands of people, like
and your fans are rabbids. Soand I think my dad, like,
I mean he plays music, andI think he plays music, but he
never like even got close to likeperforming it live or like you know,
yeah any of that. So he'slike come to a couple of shows and
(13:50):
like gone on stage and just likehyped the crowd because he's like such a
hype that is so okay. Evenin Spain at our show there and he
was like just hyping up the crowd. He was in the Puerto Rico show
and yeah, he just has somuch energy and the fans love him.
That is adorable. Yeah, hebecame a meme actually he we I was
(14:11):
performing with Bad Bunny in Puerto Ricoand my dad was there at the show
and he was on stage and itwas televised this particular performance and he's just
like with the crowd just like this. You know, grandfather Fate, he's
older, his grandfather figure, justlike with all these young people, like
you know, hyping up on TV. And then there was a meme that
(14:33):
was created after the show that waslike me asking where my grandfather is,
and it's like andretanto, like mymy grandfather's at the Bad Bunny Show or
it was something like that. Itbecame and it became viral and like he
was getting recognized. That is amazing. He was interviewed on Telemundo because of
it, and like he had hislittle fame moment. It was really cute.
(14:54):
Oh that is so funny. Well, so, Maria, you mentioned
that you're kind of the first inyour family to have a career in music.
What artists did you listen to whilegrowing up and what kind of led
you to this space for your youknow, for your life, for your
career. Yeah, I mean Ilistened to Oh my God, just a
(15:16):
very eclectic mix like my mix CDshad, like Julia Lenox, followed by
Lone Star, followed by Boys toMen Fall by Lauren Hill, followed by
Lon oh Mad and then Selena. You know, it was just all over
the place. But I mean Ialways like I was a little entertainer when
I was a little like I alwayswanted to entertain. I always wanted to
(15:39):
sing, and I was writing songs. But I never thought that it was
possible to even have a career inmusic, Like I always saw it as
just like this Hollywood sort of loreof if you're from Hollywood, then that's
where you make it, you know. I was raised in a really small
town in Georgia, Snellville, shoutout Snowville, Georgia, where like our
forray into the music industry was likeAmerican idol, yeah, you know yeah.
(16:03):
And it wasn't until a friend ofmine moved to La from Atlanta that
she was like, you need tocome pursue music here. And I was
like, all right, let's tryit. So I want a Halloween costume
contest and moved here. But itall kind of started Instnoville, Georgia,
listening to, listening to and themuch Amazing and here you are and here
(16:26):
I am so Maria from the Marias. The new album Submarine is out today,
Go stream it, go listen. It's beautiful. Maria's will be at
Hollywood Forever Cemetery August twenty second andtwenty third. It is my pleasure to
