Speaker 1 (00:02):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adham Talking your Team.
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
A Welcome back from the weekend. It is a Monday
edition of The A Team Sports Talk. Seven ninety wex
over there, AC right here, Astros give up eight unanswered.
All right, we can move on from spring training talk.
Let's get to the nitty gritty because you know me
(00:36):
and we spent time together, not that kind of time
on Friday night with this man in attendance, and then
the very next night you went and got him injured.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Cheer fulks. You were on the game. That's how that works.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Aman Thompson in a complete and utter blowout, which I
admittedly was not paying full attention to since I was
out of town and doing family things. I texted you
and I said, hey, uh, should he even been out there?
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Like? What was the cause?
Speaker 2 (01:07):
You know, when you're there and your action or just
watching it, you kind of know these things. And you
mentioned the fact that Dylan had just exited right before.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
That, literally one possession before that. Yeah, Jabari Smith Junior,
still out there, I knew they were winning, Still out there,
five and a half minutes left of an NBA game. Granted,
they were winning by a lot and more than just
their typical a lot, and they were going to win
the game, and it's pretty unlikely a team with as
little punch as the Pels were going to come back.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
And full disclosure, I texted you in part because I
got multiple texts from people saying.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
Why the bleep was even out there when they should
go one hundred and forty six and we're blowing him out,
and I'm like, I don't know, let me ask what
X he's there right now?
Speaker 4 (01:46):
Yeah, I mean there's we could. We will definitely get
into it. It's obviously unfortunate and he's probably going to
miss half of the rest of the regular season, maybe
a little bit more than that, depending on how things go.
Didn't get a bad news report, according to Sean Sharania
on exactly the grade of the strain. He stepped on
somebody's foot and he sprained his ankle and he had
(02:07):
to get taken out of the game at that point
in time, had to call a timeout so they could
get him off the floor and immediately back to the
locker room. They played tonight. Fred's listed as questionable. The
other point guards read Shepherd. He's obviously not playing. He
broke his thumb in the first of the two Pelicans game,
and the Rockets won them both, which is what they
clearly need to do, because unless the teams in the
playoff picture are playing each other, they pretty much don't
(02:30):
ever lose. So there's a couple of those games tonight
we'll get into that. What the Rockets have in store
for them, and only took almost the entire season for
them to see the Orlando Magic for the first time.
That is tonight, they'll see him again in less than
ten days. Of course, Today is also the beginning of
the NFL season. Essentially, it begins officially Wednesday afternoon during
(02:51):
our show at three o'clock, but the amount of agreements
that will be made starting today and into that day
is massive, and it includes quite a few moves for
the Houston Texans, although a move made by another team
may be the most significant move to the day for
your Houston Texans, just for the information that it provides
Nick Cassario, David Mullageta, and Derek Stingley Junior. There is
(03:15):
a new highest paid cornerback in the NFL at twenty
five million per year. Now who shares the same agent
as Derek Stingley Junior.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
For now. I think he'll share the agent for a while.
I was just doing that for effect.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
But he clearly knows where things are going. And this
to me is this is an agent again for about
the billionth time, talking about athletes first. In this particular agent,
he's just doing an insanely successful job for his clients,
all of them, even the ones that have stepped a
foul of the usual norms of both life and the NFL.
(03:49):
But you put this contract in front of that client
at this time in the off season, so you can
put a different, bigger number in front of a different
better And it's nothing wrong with j. C. Horn, but
the path to get to this deal. He actually probably
appreciates the Panthers for not signing him early. Another big
(04:09):
storyline this past weekend about what you should do with
players who are clearly awesome at football. So that little
piece of is out there. We'll get you into some
of the other deals that were made. Clearly talking about
some of the Houston deals that have been made. You
know that they added Christian Kirk via trade last week.
They are reportedly bringing back both daria A Goombalwally and
(04:32):
Derek Barnett, both as reserves. Goombawally currently the number three
tailback and number two kicker Derek Barnett their best available
edge rusher after Daniel Hunter and Will Anderson Junior airs
another bringing him back player, although the last two years
were spent with the Denver Broncos, Tremont Smith, who can
(04:52):
play corner, though he did not play corner the last
two years for Denver, but rather a special team's ace,
and he was signed to a two year year deal.
He was with the Texans twenty twenty one and twenty
twenty two. Now the reward for him. You got a
big contract from the Broncos to leave, and now you
get a bigger contract to come back when the Texans
aren't awful. Twenty twenty one twenty twenty two were some
(05:14):
of the worst years in Texans history. Not his fault,
of course, but now he gets to come back and
be a part of this team. I have to do this,
at least the first time we announced it. Alex Earl's
boyfriend has also been signed to a one year deal,
possibly as a special teamer. Also can play wide receiver,
is a slot receiver. He's been in the league for
a handful of years, and he was drafted by Nick
(05:37):
Cassario when Nick Cayley and Nick Cassario were together in
New England. It's Braxton Burios the player that I'm talking
about there and another bringing him back into the fold,
reportedly after a one year absence. When he got paid
to leave, Texans wanted him back.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Last year.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
The Cincinnati Bengals said we've got more money, and he said, okay,
I'll take it, and then he was hurt. A hamstring
injury and an illness kept Sheldon Rankins to just a
handful of games last year. He returns reportedly on a
one year deal. They expect some turnover again at their
defensive interior positions. He will now reassume the position, likely
(06:16):
as a starter here for the twenty twenty five Houston Texans.
Those are the moves they've initially reportedly made this offseason,
with players at positions of need getting big, fat, huge
contracts from other teams, and we'll start sprinkling those names
in as well.
Speaker 5 (06:34):
Well.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yeah, there's a lot of money flying around, which you
knew there would be, but it's not necessarily the fact
that it's flying around, it's who it's going to and
where those players are landing.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
I do like the fact that.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
The Jets and the Steelers are essentially well, let me
take that back.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
I like the fact that.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Aaron Rodgers is now the leader in the clubhouse for
the Steelers. And yeah, that the Jets and the Steelers
are essentially going to make a trade. Not really, it's
not really a trade. Who are the Steelers getting.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Aaron Rodgers? Oh? Okay, well, if he ends up signing there.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
That Arian Rodgers is not attached to any team because
he's attached to every team. Correct, it doesn't have a quarterback.
Two of those teams, the Seahawks now and the Jets
now as of earlier today. In both cases they now
have quarterbacks. So now he's not attached to those teams.
Every other team that did anything to either open a
(07:37):
spot because their quarterbacks spot was awful, or have since
opened up a spot like Seattle did when they sent
Geno Smith elsewhere every five set. Oh, there's an opening,
we better just report Aaron Rodgers. Keep an eye on
Aaron Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers could be in play. Yeah, we
know he doesn't have a team and they don't have
a quarterback. Let me know where he signs to play
bad football and I'll be happy to talk about it.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
Well, if he were to if he were to land
in Pittsburgh, would it be bad football because he's not
good anymore?
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Yes, okay, because I would hate to discount.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
I couldn't say, but it might not be an upgrade
from Justin Fields and Russell Wilson.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
But he's not good.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
No, Well, he hasn't been good the last couple of years,
one of which he was hurt and that's why he
quote wasn't good.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
He was on the field all year last year with
Garrett Wilson and for most of the year with DeVante Adams.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Which he made happen. Basically, I'm good.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
I just hate to I hate that he's now just
a name on the back of a jersey, and putting
him with a respectable coach like Mike Tomlin's not going
to change that necessary.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
Yeah, it is definitely something The Steelers should absolutely be
considering it because their options at this point are Russell
Wilson or a rookie or Aaron Rodgers. They are the
team that traded for DK Metcalf, DK Metcalf and George Pickens,
if everything went well, if quarterback play was strong, two
(09:00):
big ifs. Hard to beat that talent as a top
two just pure football talent. George Pickens is insane with
the talent. There's so many other issues with both his
offensive play, from his quarterback as OC's all that stuff
that it's brought him back down to earth, then his
own personal issues and dk Metcalf. He's been super productive.
(09:20):
But it's funny listening to how reported he was looking
for this. He was looking for that, just like Miles Garrett.
Guess what he was actually looking for. It starts with
a G and is followed by an R and two
e's and then an N. He was looking for green.
He's an athlete and he plays in the NFL. They're
all looking for it. They're all smart, their agents are smart.
(09:40):
It's the only thing they should ever be looking for
at those stages of their career. He's too good a
football player to not go get his bag, and that's
what he did. If he plays a couple of years
in Pittsburgh, maybe he will, maybe he won't. They were
the team that was going to pay him, so that's
who he is getting paid by. I'll go there because
they're gonna give me one hundred and fifty million. Well,
and you know the simple simple stuff, getting justin fields
(10:02):
for forty million, thirty of which is guaranteed. It's a
two year deal. We were talking about this before the show,
and I'm like, well, what are you doing? You just
had bad quarterback play and you brought up a very
good point. Well, there's just not a lot of good
quarterbacks available. If you don't draft one, if you don't
have one, if you can't miraculously develop one, which is
(10:23):
very difficult to do, and you're kind of stuck. Are
we attempting to lose? Well, I've got this player that's
making twenty million, i got another player that's These guys
are really pretty good. It'd be nice if we tried
to win somehow and tried to put a good product
out there. How do we We can't just take That's
why they signed Aaron Rodgers. It's why the Broncos signed
Russell Wilson a couple years ago. It's why the Steelers
(10:44):
signed Russell Wilson this past offseason. They believe their talent
is that we should be competitive, and if we got
reasonably good quarterback play, we can there's just no the
options aren't very good. It's why this it's why Sam
Darnold got paid. Honestly, Justin Field's not making anything. He's
making twenty million dollars a year.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
But what we want to talk about, you know, if
if you and the problem with this is are The
way I phrased it to Wextern before the show was, hey,
are are the Jets trying to have the next Sam Donald?
Which is funny because he left the Jets to become
Sam Donald, who's now a Seahawk.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
By the way, this is very confusing.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
But you know, if you're if you just getting a
quarterback to get one, wouldn't they be better off just
drafting a guy rather than wasting money on Justin Fields.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
Like I said, they they have the space. It's not
gonna hurt him in the future. It doesn't prevent them
from going at different avenue. It gives them some I mean,
they're really gonna have to change to the offense if
you want to win with Justin Fields. I think at
this point it's probably clear you're gonna have to do
things a little bit differently. I like him, I wish
he were better at throwing the football, he's just he
just isn't He's very inaccurate. It seems like everything's happening
(11:55):
too slowly, whether it's the players and the routes or
the players that are being called. He's supremely talented athlete,
and he's a really good runner as a quarterback. Maybe
there's a way you can have him augment your offense
some way. Steelers never really got around to putting them
both on the field together. They're a handful of plays
where they gave it to him to run the ball.
(12:16):
They probably didn't sign him to be a single threat
running quarterback, but it's good news. The Texans have a
team or two or six or eight in the AFC
that aren't going to be great. And quite honestly, when
a player is talented, I think as Sam Darnold does
not end up in Indianapolis or does not end up
(12:37):
in the AFC, and I think we could see this
coming if Seattle was trading Gino Smith. I think I
think this was the biggest reason why. Reportedly they essentially
offered Gino Smith very very similar money the money that
Sam Donald said yes to, but since Geno Smith said
no to it, they moved him and then they gave
it to Donald and got it something in return for Gino,
and we'll move forward with a new wide receiving group
(12:59):
because both Cavin Lockett are out, and that's the other
part of it that spins it back to Houston. They've
added Christian Kirk, They've added Braxton Barrios, they still have
Nuco Collins, and clearly they have question marks at both
Tech Dell's spot and Stefan Diggs vacated free agent spot
wide receiver, and the Texans in free agency should still meet.
(13:19):
In my opinion, there's more hole. There are holes to
me that are yet to be filled, and I don't
know that they plan on filling those holes exclusively with
the first several rounds of the upcoming NFL Draft, So
I would suspect they're still in on quite a few
second tier wide receiver free agents. We're almost already to
(13:40):
the second tier interior offensive linemen free agents. There have
been some massive deals for players. I bet the casual
fan has never even heard their names before. These offensive
linemen that are playing four years in one place and
then breaking the bank to leave. It's some people suggested
when you let Shaq Mason go, this was one of
(14:00):
the possible pitfalls of it because you're going to pay
so much money to replace and maybe it wasn't worth it.
I would push back on that, as I did on Friday.
They know they're going to have to spend money, and
hopefully all of the viable guard options won't be gone
before they unload some of their money.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
And they don't have a tremendous amount of it either.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
But I don't think they can go in the next
season without a realistic addition, expensive edition on the offensive line,
on the interior.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
But they can do that.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
They can do that. That's what the restructure to me,
time is ticking. Oh yeah, because of the names evaporating
off the list.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
Yes, you can't. You just can't watch the other It's expensive.
This is what free agency is. It's why you don't
want to Nobody builds their team in free agency correctly.
You fill in the gaps with free agency. You overcome
the mistakes you made in the draft in free agency,
and other teams are doing those things. The Texans haven't
made so many mistakes that this is the only the
(15:00):
option they have. But when you need it as badly
as they need it, that's the thing you really can't
say I'm not spending the money.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
You know, you just have to overspend.
Speaker 4 (15:10):
Like Patrick McCarry, a player played left guard to end
of the year with the Baltimore Ravens, seemed like someone
I would have imagined the Texans had interest in, and
even for the money, he ends up reportedly signing for
to go play for the Jaguars. It's it's right around
Shack Mason money, except he's younger.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
And can play the position.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
Well, I don't mind spending the money if I'm the Texans,
I just want better play.
Speaker 3 (15:37):
And that's what's gonna take.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
If you go find so many free agy whether it's
Will Fries, whether it was could have been McCary, whether
it's Brandon Shurf who's much older, whether it's Kevin Zeitdler
who's much older, they could still play. And somebody that
I just mentioned, if not somebody I haven't mentioned, maybe
the kid from Arizona as well. You gotta bring somebody in.
Can't just say out the guys we ought to be fine.
(16:00):
You'll cull pop a bitch whiched him into shape even
though he was here last year and couldn't.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
Boy, how much is coaching him up going to be
a factor in what the Texans do as far as
improving the offensive line this year. But you're right, like
you can hope for the best with drafting the guys
you need at that position, or you can get you know,
proven commodities that are absolutely more expensive, but they're proven commodities. Again,
(16:25):
have to emphasize the proven commodities part. And I don't
think you can afford to wait around on that aspect
of things with the way c J. Stroud got rocked
last season. So definitely a lot to get to as
far as the NFL today. Definitely a lot to get
to as far as the Rockets, who, by the way,
will be in action tonight, even though Amen Thompson won't
be there. And as you mentioned, kind of a random
(16:45):
injury read Shepherd.
Speaker 4 (16:48):
He heard it when he slapped the ball away from
Zion Williamson in the game on Thursday against the Pelicans.
It's just he's going to be in a splint for
four weeks, a little fractured thumb.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
I'll tell you know what.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
I will tell you my theory about how it's all
gonna go for the Rockets injury wise. When we come
back here to start the three o'clock hour. It's a
Monday edition of the A Team. Back on the clock,
as they say, next segment, the eighteen on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
Ninety two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking Your
Teams series, Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A
Team a.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
Straight up three o'clock on a Monday edition of the program.
It is the A Team. My name is Adam Clinton,
his name is Adam Wexler. We have you until six
o'clock tonight. Rockets basketball against the Orlando Magic. As you
heard wex mentioned in the first very long segment, the
Magic have yet to pop up on the calendar this year,
(17:57):
and now, of course you'll play them both times from
an East in Conference opponents standpoint in the next ten days,
starting here tonight inside Toyota Center, as the Rockets continue
to enjoy well they're out there. They are in the
midst of a long, extended home stand. I don't know
if they're enjoying it. Based on what happened the other
the other night. It's undefeated. It seems pretty good. Yeah,
(18:18):
but they're not as healthy as they were before the
weekend began. That's true, and actually technically they're they got
even less healthy Saturday, as you mentioned Reed Shepherd's broken thumb,
which is going to keep him out for a month.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
Oh no, mean, why you gotta be like that to read?
By all accounts, a very nice young man.
Speaker 4 (18:36):
He's a very nice young man. But for the third
pick in the draft, I want more third picking. This
year's draft might actually not look so bad. But he's
not gonna be there for several weeks with a broken
thumb and a splint that's going to be on it.
And men Thompson maybe two weeks, maybe a little bit more.
Hopefully it's an injury that does not have him injured
when they begin their first postseason in several years. But
he's gonna be out for a little bit of time.
(18:57):
Five and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter
of their enormous lopsided victory over the New Orleans Pelicans,
took a shot, stepped on an ankle, rolled it, and
left the game. Fred van Vliet is not too far
from a return, though no official word on if that
comes tonight unlikely, but he's not listed out. He's listed
as questionable As the team prepares for the second game
(19:18):
of their sixth game homestand played tonight, play again on Wednesday,
play Friday and Saturday, and then blah, play on St.
Pat's Day. Well we've done this before. Well this is
bigger than that. But you have to That's what I mean.
We did this before and I said, blah blah blah.
Texans just traded for Christian Kirk. You can't do that.
You got to bring way more energy. You gotta be
(19:40):
way more into it. You gotta yell the people of
the breaking news. You have to be excited about it.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
Give me another sound effect.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
I am so happy right now because I have ridded
myself of Laramie Tonsil. How's that sound? They just traded
him to the Commanders, and apparently they're getting quite the
draft pick hall at least, those are the words of
Ian Rappaport.
Speaker 3 (20:03):
Yeah, blockbuster trade.
Speaker 4 (20:05):
Texans finalizing a trade of five time Pro Bowl left
tackle sending into the Commanders. The Texans are getting a
third rounder, a second rounder, and a fourth rounder. They're
also adding a fourth round pick to the Tunsil portion
that's going to Washington. And in hindsight, as I encouraged
(20:27):
you to bring more than I did with they just
traded for Christian Kirk. I'd like to amend that in
a complete one eighty Yes, now there's more coming. I'm
sure the Texans have plans two or three days ago.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
What are the Seahawks doing.
Speaker 4 (20:41):
They're letting sending away DK Metcalf, They're letting Tyler Lockett go.
They just traded away their quarterback. What are they doing?
Are they even trying?
Speaker 5 (20:50):
What?
Speaker 4 (20:50):
This makes no sense a deal like this to me
unless there's something else going on inside the team, dynam
We're crying, practically one of us about the offensive line
play for three consecutive years. This is year three with
c J. Stroud. They have a bad center, to awful guards,
(21:17):
an okay tackle, and an elite left tackle who commits penalties.
And you just got rid of the best one by far,
and the most important.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
One by far. I'll wait till you're done. I know
you don't like that?
Speaker 6 (21:29):
Was it?
Speaker 4 (21:29):
That's all I have to say. I knew you recognize
there's more coming. Because if the starting offensive line next
year for the Texans is Blake Fisher and Titus Howard,
that is taking an enormous leap of faith by the
Houston Texans.
Speaker 5 (21:46):
YEP.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
Now Listen, all of what you said is absolutely in
theory true. What this tells me other than the obvious,
the obvious being there's something else going on or they
have some sort of plan because you don't trade your
best offensive lineman, which even I can admit that he
was their best offensive lineman.
Speaker 4 (22:02):
And that's even setting the bar low. Well, he's the
Texans best offensive lineman. Yeah, whooped to do right, but
he's actually one of the best offensive linemen.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
I think premium position on the field. Elite maybe a
little too strong, but it's close. He's close to it.
What this tells me just me, And I'm saying this
not only just from stuff that you and I have
and everybody else can look at, but just I'm also
saying this from a standpoint of things that I know.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
I think that his in.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
The locker room situation was probably worse than we were
even told.
Speaker 4 (22:41):
Yeah, unless I hear something that confirms that. I know
what kind of player he is, I know what kind
of person he is. I know how other teammates felt
about him. And I don't mean to say any of
those in a negative way. I mean, I'm always a
positive right, But I can't tell you that there weren't
wasn't an undercurrent of anything going on between this player
and that player, or how he went about things versus
how they went about things. If there was a bad
fit from this standpoint or other, someone would have to
(23:03):
tell me that at this point for me to say
that it had happened, because it certainly was not whatever
it was, if there even was anything, not a big
enough deal to do this. Not not in my opinion,
not even close the football itself, just the actual play
when when the ball is snapped and you block your
guy and you do your job.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
Awesome.
Speaker 4 (23:27):
Definitely one of the best five left tackles in football.
There's a total package to it. Any locker room stuff,
any leadership stuff, any attitude stuff, sure you can bring
that in there. Any injury history stuff always a part
of the story. And then the additional on the field stuff.
Constantly trying to cheat the system. I mean, he's gonna
snap it in a second anyway, I might as well
(23:48):
rock back. If they don't call it, I get away
with it.
Speaker 3 (23:50):
I get it. Most left tackles do that.
Speaker 4 (23:51):
He got caught more often than anybody else, and not
just this year, but every year. It was an issue
every year and these they don't have to kill your drive,
but it's seemed to with the Texans quite a bit.
So by no means a player that had no faults,
but this is an awfully talented player on an offense
that was not awfully productive to say, buy two.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
How about this?
Speaker 4 (24:15):
As you head into year three with your franchise quarterback.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
How about this?
Speaker 2 (24:19):
You know Nick Keyley had to okay this, this is
the new guy they're bringing in to be the OC.
He's not gonna let you trade him. He didn't have
the power to say no to this. Why because he's
the OC. Well he has. It's not about saying no
or yes. It's about the input that he had to
have had to make this deal. When we was just
guy done talking about how all of the offensive linemen
(24:41):
are being plucked off the free agent market that you
would potentially add to a Laramie Tunsil, and they're like, nah,
get out of here.
Speaker 3 (24:49):
We don't want what you bring to the table.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
Overall, that's what they're saying, like you could strip away everything.
But at the end of the day, if he's so good,
the Texans are like, we don't want you here. We
want what we can get for you here. Instead, we
want that more than we want you. Whatever elite level
of play you might provide being the blind side protector
for CJ. Stroud, it ain't good enough for everything else
(25:13):
that is your package.
Speaker 4 (25:16):
Yeah, I just the everything else.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
I just there.
Speaker 4 (25:18):
Someone's gonna have to tell me about it. I mean,
I'm there in effort. I have enough of a feel
for what's going on there, and we talked about some
of the things we believe are a part of it.
But man, I'm not trying to bag on the guy,
but I there better be some other really good reason
or the part I talked about initially that they have
a plan in place that there were minutes away from
(25:40):
hearing them finalize the deal for some other player. They
do have something, an idea of more than just we
can't move forward with him. Like they've gotten rid of
two of their offensive line. They were bad on the
offensive line. It was a bad group as offensive linemen
as a whole. This was a bad offensive line. And
they just told two of the starters don't come back,
(26:02):
said one, we're not paying you anymore, and said to
the other one, somebody else is gonna pay you now
because we're trading you there.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
I get that. When we said.
Speaker 4 (26:09):
They have to acknowledge there was a problem, you know,
that's the first step. You gotta admit there's a problem.
They're admitting it loudly as possible. Teams don't tell their
left tackles to get lost very often, very very infrequently,
especially teams that are at this stage. They're trying to
catch the Ravens, the Chiefs, and the Bills. And this
is early in the basically the beginning of the league year,
(26:34):
early in the process. This is what they've decided to
do to get better, to have CJ's life better, to
have Nick Cayley's first go round with the Texans as
a play caller. This is how they've chosen to make
themselves better. They don't have a starting left tackle as
we sit here. They have some money to spend, they
(26:54):
have a great draft arsenal now, but I think with
this point should be worried about the product on the
field more than well, this in the future and that
in the future. And this is what they could do
with that move, in this move, and it gives them fleck.
They don't need flexibility. They need players, players who can
play quick. Who's their best lineman. It's unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
Yeah, I uh again, and I'm about to tweet this
out like I definitely had overhauling the Texans offensive line
on Bingo Card. I don't know if this is the
route that I had them taking, but you have to
think there's some like, Okay, what's the haul again?
Speaker 4 (27:27):
Three picks come in your way, one going out, a second, third,
and a fourth coming in fourth going out.
Speaker 2 (27:33):
If you're Nick Cassio, and you are because you're Nick Cassario,
you liked you love to wheel in deal. He's got
to be trading up to get some guy he loves,
don't you think.
Speaker 3 (27:45):
Yeah, it's still pretty difficult with what they have.
Speaker 4 (27:49):
The commander's pick, I assume is the commander's second rounder.
Speaker 3 (27:53):
You don't have two.
Speaker 4 (27:53):
First, you have your own, which you can move and
you now need at the back of the rest. Yes,
draft the commanders pick, which is actually worse than your
pick in the second round.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
It's this is fascinating because I just this is not
something I saw coming. Even though you're right, I can't
sit here and say I hated Aaron mccutchell.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
I didn't really say that.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
I just didn't like some of the things that he did,
you know and I but he was clearly their best
offensive lineman. And what's even more fascinating about this, like
this is probably the last remnant of the Bill O'Brien
era getting shipped out the door today.
Speaker 4 (28:33):
Technically that is true, you know what I mean, until
they resign John Well, he.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Has his own category. Come on, man, John Weeks should
not ever catch strays for anything. All he's been is
like he's not catching astray for being a lifer here.
It's a bit, but I don't want to attach him
to the Bill O'Brien era. He was here for Gary Kubiak,
wasn't he. Yes, well, we want to hear from you.
Speaker 4 (28:52):
Obviously, this is such a big deal and definitely not
expected on the day that the teams are available able
to put together deals. They can technically come to an
agreement with players. They just can't sign the paperwork that
comes Wednesday, And obviously they can orchestrate deals. And in
that regard, you know the Christian Kirk deals set to
become official on the twelfth. This deal, I would imagine
(29:15):
very similar to that. So there are a lot of
wheels in motion. The Irons had better be in the
fire for the Texans, and it also changes their cap
structure quite a bit with what Laramie Tunks was on
the books for previously, what it will now cost them
with a trade, and what else is well still in
the pipeline, because the pipeline can't be empty, not by
(29:36):
any means. And as much as we were uncertain of
what this off season might look like, you know, a
couple of years ago, the off season was really the draft.
You just brought in CJ. Strattenwill Anderson, here's your brand
new football team. Last offseason was we're splashy, we have
tons of money, we have a lot of opportunities to
make things happen, and they did. Daniel Hunter is a Texan,
(29:57):
as he's Al Shaier is a Texan multiple along the defense.
Elsewhere are Texans. Here comes Joe Mixon, and now you
know what to expect with this offseason. An absolute complete
overhaul of the Texans offensive line. Two of the three
players who made significant money no longer Houston Texans. Laramie
(30:17):
Tunstall no longer a Houston Texans offensive lineman. We're talking
about it here on the eight Team, The.
Speaker 1 (30:26):
Eight Team on Sports Talk seven ninety back to Adam
Clinton and Adam Wexler the eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (30:41):
It is the eight team Sports Talk seven ninety. Very
very busy.
Speaker 3 (30:44):
You know what.
Speaker 2 (30:45):
Thank you to the Houston Texans for waiting for the
weekend to be over with Well, I don't know, I look,
I can. I can tell you this just kind of
digging around the I mean, and it's not even takes
digging around. This is common sense. If you're shipping out
Laramie Tunzel and you're getting a bunch of draft picks back,
you're using a combination of what your war chest contains
(31:10):
to move up in the draft higher than you already are,
which is back into the first round to get a
badass left tackle.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
You have to.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
And then you said, ooh, like the draft sucks, No,
it doesn't suck.
Speaker 4 (31:22):
But where how far up do you think you can
go the terms of the deal. If you have not
been made aware, the Texas are training Laramie Tunsel, according
to multiple reports to the Washington Commanders. You know, the
team that we were talking about being basically in the
same position a year behind. They thought, our very young
stud quarterback who's already taking our team to the playoffs
just like CJ did. We think he needs some awesome
(31:44):
left tackle. We've got him. He's Laramie Tunsel. He's now
gonna be blocking for Jayden Daniels. Laramie Tunsell and this
year's fourth rounder go to Washington. In return, Texans get
two picks in this year's draft, a third and a seventh,
and two picks in next year's draft, a second and
a fourth.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
So, by the way, Caden Bullock was your fourth round
pick last year. Correct round pick? Oh, I'm sorry, all right,
Well it's not as good as I thought.
Speaker 4 (32:13):
Yeah, I mean the third trying to compare rounder this year,
provided it's the Commanders, which I believe it is, is late.
Speaker 3 (32:19):
It's in the nineties or late eighties.
Speaker 4 (32:23):
The second rounder you get from the Commanders in twenty
six is undetermined, but likely somewhere after fifty. So I'm
not sure what you think you added today that is
definitely going to allow you to go from twenty five
to the targeted young offensive lineman that.
Speaker 3 (32:42):
Now has to step end.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
You have been started immediately conversations with another team out
there to facilitate this move up, like you think you
can get this magical person you like so much and
you know that with that team's pick you could get them.
Speaker 3 (32:59):
Then you make a deal like.
Speaker 4 (33:00):
This, right, But those things don't come together in March.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
Why not?
Speaker 4 (33:06):
They just don't, I mean, why trade him because you're
preparing for the league year to begin. So the timing
was right for that. There are a handful of offensive
linemen that I'm sure will go top fifteen, which if
that's where the Texans are trying to get to, names
like Will Campbell, like Arma Membu sec sec get used
(33:27):
to hearing that with Nick Tyler, Booker sec. These are
all guys that are probably in that range. They probably
could have drafted an offensive lineman right there at twenty five.
Probably should mention Kelvin Banks. A lot of people think
the Texans like him where he goes in the draft,
at least according to some who are prognosticating that that's
anywhere from ten to twenty five. But this is I'm
(33:50):
still a little bit shocked. I imagine you can hear
it in my voice. This is as bold a move
as the Texans have made since, certainly since they traded
for Will Anderson. Possibly in it side by side with
trading for Will Anderson. You don't even know what Will
Anderson was gonna be. You know what, Laramie Tunsel is,
(34:12):
he's got your left side on lock. He's gonna give
up a sack or two a year. Maybe he's gonna
give up a handful of pressures each year. Maybe he's
gonna commit fifteen penalties, most of which should be avoided
false starts and off sides and stuff like that.
Speaker 3 (34:26):
What what about his replace? Can I make a joke
about that next guy?
Speaker 2 (34:29):
Since he just got a text to Timmy he just
got called for another false star in his way out
of the Snake.
Speaker 4 (34:33):
Caserio got called for a false start and he still
went through with this.
Speaker 3 (34:37):
It's gonna be all right, I promise he look.
Speaker 4 (34:40):
Is that what you guys have full unadult traded faith
in Nick Cassario because he's done such a masterful job.
It's a good point in the offensive line together. Listen,
pat him on the back again. This move's going to work.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
It's it's hard for me, with everything I've said to
our argue against some of the points you are making.
Speaker 3 (35:02):
But again, I don't think they do.
Speaker 2 (35:05):
This just because they have their eyes on somebody in
the draft. It's gotta be a combination of I mean,
here's the deal.
Speaker 4 (35:14):
Can I just give him till six o'clock? Who the
Texans if they think there's an offensive lineman in place
who plays left tackle at an unbelievably high level, then.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
Money is this still flying around? It is?
Speaker 2 (35:27):
But my thing is this, how about like you know,
we always talk about the magical truth serum that no
one ever uses.
Speaker 3 (35:34):
Who just talk about it? What's CJ.
Speaker 2 (35:36):
Stroud thinking right now? Or better yet? Did he give
his blessing? And that's not a joke. This is a
franchise quarterback and you're talking about moving his blind side
protector for whatever reason or reasons. You don't think he
was consulted about this.
Speaker 4 (35:55):
He better have been consulted as an interesting thought, and
we'll see if we believe and have learned.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
If that were was in fact the.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
Case I were running the Texans, I would definitely talk
to him first before I did this.
Speaker 4 (36:07):
Would you consult him or would you just tell him
here's what we're thinking we're about to do.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
That's a good you want to let you know, which
is how you read about it. So you're saying they
went Ryan Presley on him. In that sense, we're doing
this we're just letting you know about it instead of
you finding out about on sports saying I trust his opinion.
I understand he's in the locker room when they're not.
He's going to know better than anybody how good or
not good he is on and off the field.
Speaker 4 (36:30):
And so do people who evaluate tape.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
Yeah, but they're not getting crushed if he doesn't do
his job. True, I'm just wondering. I'm not like even
this isn't even for a fact, like that's how much
I think. And I also believe in CJ. Stroud, and
I think the Texans agree with me. I think that's
how they feel about the kid. I just can't imagine
making a this is a seismic franchise altering deal one
(36:56):
way or the other. I can't imagine he wasn't a
part of the process in some way. Yeah, nothing so.
Speaker 4 (37:00):
Far on the on the old ig from either King
Tunsel or at CJ. Stroud, but I'm sure there will
be at some point.
Speaker 3 (37:07):
The commanders have weighed in.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
I'm telling you right now though, with the way Nick
Kate like, that's why I bring that up. He's probably
wanting to change the way the line plays, not just
it needs to be better, but the actual way they play,
Like when the Texans got the zone blocking scheme installed,
when Kobiat guy here, that took a little bit of
time to overhaul the cast of characters they had in
(37:29):
front of David Carr before, so that you know, Matt
Schaub could then bootleg.
Speaker 4 (37:35):
True, but not not all of it. But most of
that stuff is on the interior. I mean, if you're
saying that they want their left tackle to be better
at X, whatever that is. I mean, he's not the
greatest run blocker. We've talked about that for all the
years that he's been here. He's not an elite run blocker.
(37:55):
But most teams that have a great pass blocking left
tackle still prefer to have a great pass blocking left
tackle because it means your quarterbacks getting hit less. It
means you can operate your offense more. If you can't
block for the run, okay, then run somewhere else, or
don't run at this edge rusher that's great against the
run on his side. There are ways around that, and
it's certainly not crippling your team like others on the
(38:18):
offensive line certainly were.
Speaker 3 (38:20):
It's a big deal. It is a huge, huge, deal.
Speaker 4 (38:23):
It is a major shift, and you continue pulling away
from this team players that make tremendous money. As much
as it's hard half ramifications of that, Jack Mason was
one of their most highly paid players. He wasn't he
didn't have some unbelievable contract, But with how young this
team is, there just aren't that many players pulling in
eight figures per season or hitting the cap at well
(38:45):
above eight figures.
Speaker 3 (38:46):
He was one of them.
Speaker 4 (38:47):
It definitely changes things when you pull that away from
Laramie Tunsll, and it's not fully away because of the
way the cap works and put what will still be
hit because of it. But you're not paying Laramie Tunssell
in the future. Maybe a small portion of it. I
don't think much of a significance, but you're really gonna
have to change the way you do things. A cap
number that you know basically was in the twenty one
(39:09):
million dollar range, a base salary was in the twenty
million dollar range.
Speaker 3 (39:13):
That's not you're not gonna be hit with that in
the future.
Speaker 4 (39:16):
We hit with a small portion of that this upcoming
year because you've traded him, which I assume will go
into effect as it happens, but it's incredible.
Speaker 3 (39:26):
This is an incredible move.
Speaker 4 (39:29):
If you look around the entire NFL, and we weren't
with you from Friday afternoon until Monday. At now three
twenty seven, the freaking Browns had a complete one eighty
miles and that's nothing compared to what the Texans just did.
The Browns are awful. They're going to say anyway, irrelevant
if they move him or if they keep him. Texans
(39:51):
are the fourth best team in the AFC two years running.
They're trying to make sure their quarterback remains among the
elite AFC quarterbacks. And they just got rid of not one,
but two offensive linemen on the same side, and one
of them is clearly a very very good left tackle.
And their roster boasts two tackles with playing experience at tackle,
(40:13):
one who finished the year on the interior because they
were so bad on the interior, Titus Howard, and the
other we'll be going into his second year Blake Fisher,
a second round pick drafted to be a starter. It's
almost a lock that Blake Fisher is protecting C. J.
Stroud for every play next year at tackle while they're
(40:35):
both healthy. Apparently, Nick c and Nick c are both
good with that.
Speaker 2 (40:40):
I want to talk about that aspect a little bit
more when we come back. Laramie ton soul is a
Washington commander. Will he be a Redskin in the future.
That's another thing I got to think about. But that's
that's neither here nor there for the Houston Texans. We
will continue to discuss when we come back the eight
On Sports Talk seven ninety you've been in any sort
(41:02):
of motor vehicle collision and you don't know who to
turn to. Well, I'm glad you're listening to me because
I would like to send you to a proud partner
of the Houston Rockets. I'm talking about Mocarum Injury Lawyers,
and I'm talking about a law firm that has been
helping Houstonians for over thirty years and is always available.
And when I say always, I mean twenty four to seven,
(41:24):
three sixty five, even leap years. They've got you covered
twenty four seven. You can call them at two eight
one two two two, twenty two to twenty two your consultation.
That's always going to be free and you won't pay
a single dime unless you win. Wellcarum Injury lawyers. They
are out to help get your life back on track,
to help you obtain the highest possible compensation for your injuries,
(41:46):
and of course by doing all that, they're allowing you
to avoid the headaches that come with being in that
collision and just basically get yourself back up to a
clean bill of health, especially if you've been in a
serious accident.
Speaker 3 (41:58):
So give them a call to.
Speaker 2 (42:00):
Eight one two two two twenty two twenty two, twenty
four to seven three sixty five at two eight one
two two two twenty two to twenty two for more
carum injury lawyers.
Speaker 3 (42:10):
Please five for five. Hey, it's Craig Vigio. Listen to
the Home of the Astros in your home. Just tell
your smart speaker.
Speaker 2 (42:17):
Play Sports Talk seven to ninety on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 4 (42:24):
Yeah, we're talking about it. Laramie Tonsel's a commander. Laramie
Tonsels not protecting CJ. Stroud anymore. A deal has been
put in place for the Texans to send their left
tackle for half a decade elsewhere.
Speaker 3 (42:38):
He's going to the Commanders along with one pick.
Speaker 4 (42:40):
The Texans will be receiving back four picks, a couple
of them this year's draft. Couple of them in the
twenty sixth draft, one a second, one a third, one
a fourth, and one a seventh.
Speaker 3 (42:51):
And the Texans.
Speaker 4 (42:52):
I don't know if it's a new era of Texans football,
but we certainly need to continue digging in on their
complete overall their offensive line. Mason already told he's going
to be released, and now Jeremie Tunsell not needed on
next year's or any future years. Houston Texans roster seven one, three, two, two, five,
seven ninety the number to join in on that conversation,
(43:13):
along with a little bit of a recap of what
else is going on in the NFL. Specific to the
Texans who have seen one of the players off of
last year's team. He found the end zone in their
last home game last year, Eric Murray, finding a new
home elsewhere. We want to hear from you. We'll do
that here, getting out to Joe joining us here on.
Speaker 1 (43:30):
The A team.
Speaker 4 (43:31):
All right, Joe, what do you got for us today?
On Tunsl?
Speaker 1 (43:35):
I was just wondering why we got rid of Tunsl
if we really need line though, and what pick do
we get for this year's draft? And I'll hang up
and listen.
Speaker 4 (43:44):
The simplicity with which you ask us. That question is
so profound. I don't tell me why they're getting rid
of tunsil if they're trying to improve their offensive line.
It sounds so simple, and yet this is the question
where actually trying to answer. Well, here's the thing, and
I'll give you the picks in just a second.
Speaker 2 (44:05):
If you're having to ask that question, don't you feel like,
just by in principle, something was a miss from a
It might be just a pure plaything, but I doubt it.
I think I'm telling you I don't know anything other
than just when this kind of thing happens, it's almost
always a personality conflict of some kind.
Speaker 4 (44:27):
Okay, last couple of years there's been a personality conflict
with Laramie Tonsel. Right, I'm assuming we're but this is
purely hypothetical. Yeah, okay, so what he's good at football is?
Is this really derailing your your desires?
Speaker 3 (44:43):
Your example?
Speaker 4 (44:44):
Our culture like this is culture doesn't have to be
front and center, and culture's probably talked about more than
it should be, but they talk about it more than anybody.
And we are all on, bah my god, look at
how quickly Demico changed the culture.
Speaker 3 (44:57):
Yeah, because they drafted CJ. And will.
Speaker 4 (44:59):
Not only are they all at football, they happen to
be awesome dudes. They're phenomenal leaders.
Speaker 2 (45:02):
They've added a bunch of other players that are also
great leaders and great expect There were people already there
that were also awesome, and he was also already there,
And if he wasn't awesome from that standpoint, then I
could see them doing this.
Speaker 3 (45:14):
Let me give you example.
Speaker 2 (45:16):
I don't know, totally lost well, Nico Collins, Yeah, Laramie
was already there doing what playing for one of the
worst franchises in football. Who can create culture with that?
They suck Their culture is embarrassing.
Speaker 3 (45:25):
Nico Collins was there too, on the injured list for
two years.
Speaker 2 (45:29):
Okay, Niko Collins is not going to lead this team
as a rookie in twenty twenty one?
Speaker 5 (45:33):
Is he?
Speaker 3 (45:34):
CJ.
Speaker 2 (45:34):
Stroud led this team as a rookie. You're back, Okay. Well,
if you want me to give you answers, I will.
If you want to just keep saying why I'm wrong
with every answer I give you, we can do that too.
I don't understand why you're the biggest cheerleader on the
planet for this kind. By the way, I'm serious what's changed,
something else changed, nothing changed, so that they can maybe
afford to get rid of his attitude. Now, if that's
what it is, I'm not even saying that's what it is.
(45:54):
I'm just saying I don't You rarely see people shipped
out the door in their prime that are as good
as you think he is at his job, at their job,
unless something's amiss, non playing standpoint.
Speaker 4 (46:07):
As in, you think they're okay hypothetically in taking that
perceived problem out the door and getting worse and putting
their quarterback in jail.
Speaker 2 (46:17):
Well, this is the part where I wanted to Okay,
So you have a coworker, this is not about us.
Speaker 3 (46:25):
Let me let me prefer this is true.
Speaker 5 (46:27):
I have one.
Speaker 2 (46:27):
You have a coworker, You host a show with them,
I'll just go all in.
Speaker 3 (46:32):
I'll lean all in. You host a show with them.
Speaker 2 (46:34):
It could be sports, it could be politics, it could
be a podcast, what have you. And you know it's
it's all good because you have high ratings and you're
getting revenue and you're getting bonus checks and everything's great.
And then but you don't like each other. I should
probably point that out. Definitely not us. You got a
personality conflict, and it's it's deep.
Speaker 3 (46:54):
It's to the.
Speaker 2 (46:55):
Point where like bosses are involved and you've been hauled
in the office, and you know, it's just it's not
a great working environment, right, it's untenable. But you're still
getting the bonus checks, you're still getting the high ratings.
You're still getting everybody thinks it's a great show, even
or maybe they think it's a great show because you
hate each other, I don't know. And then one day
(47:15):
he just the check stopped coming because the ratings have
taken just a slight dip, just a slight dip, and
so at that exact moment, boom gone because you could
afford to part ways because you are no longer producing
whatever it was that made you such a good Now,
take that to the last two years of Demico culture,
(47:36):
because that's all we've got, right, yep. Well, the first
year they won ten games, they went to the postseason,
all sorts of accolades and awards and all that good stuff.
Speaker 4 (47:45):
Almost one Coach of the Year, but the dummies gave
it to Stefanski.
Speaker 2 (47:48):
Right, and that which really looks stupid now, but that
happens a million times in all sorts of categories.
Speaker 3 (47:53):
A year later, ten wins again.
Speaker 2 (47:56):
But nobody is confusing those two seasons with you know,
nobody's confusing last season with this past one. And it's
just the offense and specifically the offensive line is marketedly
worse by all accounts, and Cj'd probably be the first
person to say that if you had the truth serum,
So it's he's expendable. Now from that standpoint, I absolutely
(48:20):
agree with you that he's one of the best in
the league. But if two things are at play here, A,
the personality conflict and the line play, eh, and you
think he's a part of that for whatever reason, which
seems stupid on the surface because of what we're talking about.
But b if you're just about to you got rid
of your offensive coordinator, you got rid of your offensive
line coach, you have new people in play at those
(48:41):
very important positions that are tasked with making your quarterbacks
life better.
Speaker 3 (48:47):
And if you're overhauling that whole.
Speaker 2 (48:50):
Scenario anyway, then this sort of kind of starts to
make sense when you combine it with the personality conflict
if that's there, And again, yeah, a lot of hypothetical
on my part too. I'm not saying everybody in the
locker room hated Larry Tunssel. It's not what I'm saying,
But if they didn't like necessarily.
Speaker 4 (49:04):
It's probably also fair to say, we know that's not
the case and.
Speaker 3 (49:09):
Those guys that.
Speaker 2 (49:11):
But I don't know, Like I have no doubt in
my mind, there's like guys on the roster that you
would say their names and everybody in that locker room
would go to war, run through a brick wall for
that guy, because not only are they a great guy,
not only a great player, they are all about the
team first.
Speaker 3 (49:28):
I don't know if you can say that about Laramie Tunsel.
I really don't.
Speaker 2 (49:31):
I think he likes some of the things that come
with the prestige and the position and the money and
all that kind. But I don't know that he's I
don't know that he was ever. Just football is my passion,
my love. Ye get me wrong, though, a.
Speaker 4 (49:43):
Lot of football likely left in his career as he
turns past thirty. Probably a contract extension in the works,
I would imagine with the Commanders. This allows the Texans
to get a lot less expensive, It should allow them
all so to get younger. I'm not sure that they're
going to trade out a very expensive older tackle to
(50:04):
bring in a very expensive older tackle. Doesn't seem like
that's the plan in places or what they would like
to do. I don't know the answer today, but the
element as you kind of walked everybody through your kind
of position on THATIO think about this, I think there's
a point to be made. It's not quite like it
is from a big team standpoint. I just got done
saying Miles Garrett's a Brown, Miles Garrett's not a Brown.
Speaker 3 (50:26):
What difference does it make.
Speaker 4 (50:27):
They're awful and that was clearly true with Laramie Tunsel
as a Texan when they went from winning with Bill
to losing for two years and then winning again. The
impact on the big picture, it's it's hard to quantify it.
But he's also part of a smaller picture. He's part
of their offensive line. There's five offensive linemen on the
field every play, sometimes six. He's part of the line
(50:49):
that was pretty good last year or average, and he
was part of a line that was not good this
year at all.
Speaker 3 (50:55):
I mean, I.
Speaker 4 (50:55):
Don't think they're going to get individual left tackle one
on one pass blocking play better than what they got
from laramiets one last year. But is it possible they're
going to have better offensive line play as a group.
They're going to provide better protection for CJ. Stroud and
this offense to operate. They're going to open up holes
(51:16):
for anybody that's behind, not just Joe Mixon and nobody
else because all of a sudden they could run the
ball a little bit with Joe. I mean, it is
absolutely possible you had one of the five least productive
offensive lines as a group, both pass blocking, run blocking,
you know, their win percentage, all those things. That's what
they had last year. They were one of the five worst.
(51:39):
So how much crying should I be doing if two
of the five players aren't coming back?
Speaker 2 (51:44):
And just to really lean into what I said before
we go to break, they extended one of the guys
that was here for the lean years and they just
shipped the other one out the door.
Speaker 4 (51:52):
Well, they also extended Titus, but that was yeah, Nick
did that.
Speaker 3 (51:56):
That's just a bad decision, that's all that was.
Speaker 4 (51:59):
Yeah, three or seven tventy five million dollars that's the
contract that Laramie's playing under when he signed the most
recent extension, So basically twenty five year caphits a little
bit different each year and declining from the time he
signed it, but not the biggest concern for the Texans anywhere.
You know, we haven't discussed on this the hall. You
just traded one of the best left tackles individually speaking,
(52:20):
and what did you get in return? How are you
going to make sure you got enough in return? He's
made a blockbuster deal before, trading an established talent for
nothing but future assets.
Speaker 3 (52:31):
That worked out quite well.
Speaker 4 (52:32):
We'll discuss what we think about this hall for this
player coming from the Commanders to the Texans next.
Speaker 1 (52:40):
The A team on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (52:45):
So we can be a pain in each other's backsides,
but it's not joint pain. It's not like lasting joint pain.
And if you want lasting relief for said pain and
you don't want to go under the knife for surgery,
and you want to not do with a downtime and
the drugs that come with a surgery, and you want
type of lasting relief that comes with regenerative, cutting edge medicine,
(53:08):
there's only one place to go to x QC Kinetics.
Speaker 4 (53:11):
Is that one place right here? With four Houston area locations,
you got seven one, three, nine one three fifty two
eighty five. Remember that number. We've told you about it
for years now. Many of you have taken them up
on that and got yourself set up for free consultation
and made sure you with your own body. As a
matter of fact, saying no to chronic joint pain. That's right.
(53:31):
Regenerative medicine, that's what we're talking about. It's cutting edge technology,
the leaders in the industry. It's why we're sending you
to q C Kinetics seven one three nine one three
fifty two eighty five. If joint pain is holding you back,
make that phone call today. You could be a great
candidate for their regenerative medicine treatment. Seven to one three
nine to one three fifty two eighty five. Set up
(53:53):
with a free consultation with QC Kinetics.
Speaker 1 (53:56):
Adam Clinton, Adam Wentfler eighteen Continue on Sports Talk to
seven ninety goes.
Speaker 7 (54:03):
Up, Stars, Rockets, Basketball lives here. I love days like
this because a lot of people say a lot of.
Speaker 2 (54:19):
Things and then in hindsight they end up looking foolish,
or I guess some can look like a genius. That's
why when when days like today happen and they're rare,
I think because of who you're talking about, because of
where he's at in his time. He's thirty one, but
(54:40):
he's not thirty five. He's not you know, at the
back end, necessarily he can still he still has some
good years left in him talking about Laramie Tunsel. But
the culture you're talking about. The more time passes, the
more minutes that have gone by since we found out
about this deal, the more I think that had to
do with like eighty percent of this, eighty percent of it.
Speaker 4 (55:01):
At some point you do get to this and I
keep questioning, well, why what's different last year, this year,
the next year, the year before that. I mean, it's
really anything that's happened since the arrival of Demiko's is
the only timeline that matters. Anything that happened before that's
not really relevant. Nobody in the building is holding it
against him or giving him props for it. It's a new era,
and they're two and a half years in now, or
two years and a couple of months into the Domico
(55:22):
Ryans era. If he perceives that this team can be
in a better place in every area, locker room culture,
you name it, all of it by making this move.
I'm sure that he does feel that way. There must
be additionally to that, and earlier we were talking about
you know Nick Cayley, you know he has to be
in favor of this move. Dimiko has to be in
favor of this move. Whether it was Demiko that brought
it to Nick's attention or Nick that brought it to
(55:44):
Dimiko's attention, that this is something that I could do.
If it's Nick or Demiko saying why don't you look
in to see if you can do it certainly comes
from that. That's the top. It comes from the top.
From a football standpoint, they're definitely on board, and it is.
It's done with only possible plans in place. You know,
Gino Smith getting traded from Seattle, so moments later they
(56:07):
could sign Sam Donald. They probably had a pretty good idea,
we're going to execute Plan A, so then we can
follow it up with Plan B and everything will be
fine and we will see basically no difference in our
quarterback play.
Speaker 3 (56:18):
If that's what they believe.
Speaker 4 (56:19):
I think they're actually acting like Geno Smith wasn't pretty good,
because probably just as good as Sam was. Sam just
in a better situation the year ago. But I don't
know that the Texans really are in a position to
say that, And I don't think we're going to be
sitting here tomorrow with the other side of that coming together,
Like the other side of the Geno Smith Sam Donald
thing came together rather quickly over span of just a
(56:39):
couple of days. Here's what we want to do, because
we know we can do that. I think they know
they can't go into next season with the current group
of offensive linemen. They do have a little bit of
a haul on draft days in the upcoming years, not
all for this year, but again to re report it
for you as many around the country, Aaron Wilson right
here in Houston of course with US and KPRC two
(57:00):
who has reported it is a twenty twenty five fourth
rounder and Laramie Tunsel going to Washington in return for
two picks this year, two picks next year, a third
and seventh this year, a second and fourth next year.
So you essentially you get three players in return. Two
(57:20):
of them should be starting for you as soon as
next year when the second round comes in.
Speaker 3 (57:27):
That's twenty twenty six.
Speaker 4 (57:28):
The other picks the seventh and probably the fourth or
maybe something for Nick to decide what to do with.
He just traded a seventh round picking back to back
years for Joe Mixon last offseason and Christian Kirk this offseason,
and the pick they used for the Christian Kirk deal
added in the cam Akers deal done during the season.
That pick to him is I'm sure, let me just
(57:49):
go get something I can use to trade the other picks.
You gotta hit somebody the second round or they get
in twenty six, which is, like I said, it's probably
not a very good pick in the second round, after
the best fifty players are off the board. I sure
hope somebody that's really good comes from this deal.
Speaker 3 (58:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (58:07):
I think that they think that someone will, and I
think we will find out who that is a lot
sooner rather than later.
Speaker 3 (58:15):
We will continue discussing.
Speaker 1 (58:16):
This next the eight on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (58:24):

Speaker 1 (58:57):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys Am Talking Your Teams series
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A team.
Speaker 2 (59:10):
A Welcome in to the four o'clock hour here on
a Monday edition of The Eight Team Sports Talk seven
ninety and now simulcast on Space City Home Network for
the remainder of the show. So now you can all
see how we are reacting to the fact that the
Texans have sent out Laramie Tunsel in a trade that
(59:33):
you mentioned it earlier. You know, Miles Garrett was probably
the most remarkable I guess decision of the weekend when
you consider that he was like, I'm out of here
and I'm not going to talk to the owner. I mean,
there's big deals that he made a weekend. He wanted
to talk to the right He told him no, right
way around, and then they sign him, they extend him,
and like you said, and I totally agree, it didn't
(59:53):
matter if he was there or not. They're going to
be terrible next year because they don't have a quarterback.
But are the Texans going to be better in twenty
twenty five than they were in twenty twenty four? And
all indications were that that would hopefully be the case
with some of the decisions they were making this offseason.
Speaker 3 (01:00:10):
This one they made the day. I really feel like
it is split.
Speaker 2 (01:00:15):
Some people are like trying to jump off the roof
of the building over this, and some people like me
are like, well, I mean I was never a huge
fan of Laramie Tunsel anyway, for a variety of reasons.
And if you're trying to overhaul the line in more
ways than one, i e. Culture, maybe this is a
good move, contingent upon what you end up doing with
(01:00:37):
the assets you've received and what you already had.
Speaker 4 (01:00:40):
To me, it's a second, third, fourth, and seventh, that's
what you've gotten. You've really just swap one of those picks,
so you're really just getting three picks back in return,
a second, a third, and a seventh. Only one of
those comes in twenty six, that's the second. I hope
you got gained some financial flexibility from this, because those
players aren't helping CJ win this year. They might not
(01:01:01):
even help CJ win next year. And what's worse, they
might not help CJ win ever. They might not help
Demiko will Anderson or anybody in Hughton. They might not
help Callahannah win.
Speaker 3 (01:01:09):
Ever.
Speaker 4 (01:01:11):
I don't know how much Larrymy was helping them win,
but he was on both of the recent editions of
some of the best Texans teams they've ever had. He
was on the Joshaun Watson teams that likely should have
they were in position to do more damage in the postseason,
and now he's on the CJ. Stroud teams that have
(01:01:31):
won the division in back to back years. There's four
teams that made it to the second round of the
playoffs and back to back years in the AFC, and
they're one of them. One of them just paid Lamar
Jackson last offseason a crazy amount of money, one of
them just gave the reigning MVP Josh Allen this past
weekend a crazy amount of money.
Speaker 3 (01:01:49):
And the other one has Pat Mahomes. You have CJ. Stroud. CJ.
Speaker 4 (01:01:53):
Stroud's getting paid nothing compared to them, nothing in a year,
four in a year compared to them, and even in
year five after he's signed his contract extension, he still
won't be getting paid quite like those guys are hopefully
still playing close to what those guys are and hopefully
you've done the things that are necessary to put you
in position to beat those teams. It's not even just
(01:02:16):
the then of it. The win over the Bills this year,
you know, the three point win, the defense that did
his job against Josh Allen when he went nine to thirty.
That seems like the game that's out of place. The
anomaly in the last two years against the Bills and
the Chiefs and the Ravens. It's nothing but a list
(01:02:38):
of it looked like we were in the game in your.
Speaker 2 (01:02:41):
Loss loss loss loss loss loss loss to these teams
that are better than you. The scores haven't been awful
all the time Christmas Day was, but you're not better
than these teams.
Speaker 4 (01:02:54):
That's what this offseason is supposed to be about. Getting
better than those teams, at least holding off. You know,
the other three teams that made the playoffs. The Broncos
are getting better. You could probably argue that Jaguars, even
with who James Gladstone said game on about let them go.
Evan Ingram and Christian Kirk, etc. They've made some moves
today that I would argue probably put them in position
(01:03:15):
to be better. I mean, you got to stay better
than them, at the very least win the division again.
But I don't want to be talking about at the
very least, I don't want to be talking about the
bar remaining in the same place. Isn't it time to
be making that next step? They got to show me.
I have some time, They have some time. The league
year hasn't even started yet, but right now, if they
were to play a game in mid March, which they've
(01:03:36):
never done before in the NFL, at least not since
I've been alive, their starting tackles would be Blake Fisher
and Titus Howard. So if after whom have started a
tackle in the NFL previously.
Speaker 2 (01:03:46):
Yeah, So, if you're looking at Nico Collins and Jill
Mixon and then you're adding Braxton Barrios Christian Kirk, and
you're thinking about what kind of and I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:04:00):
What's going to be the tight end situation.
Speaker 2 (01:04:02):
I mean it's I don't think there's gonna be a
ton of changes unless they just decide to draft.
Speaker 4 (01:04:06):
Well, I mean, they got three tight ends under contract.
Speaker 3 (01:04:09):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (01:04:10):
That's that's what I'm saying. That's the main reason they do.
But so once once this thing gets to training camp,
for example, you know what kind of line and specifically
what kind of scheme is Nick Cayley and company running?
And you know, does the personnel you already have and
(01:04:30):
will add make that line a better offensive line than
the one that blocked for CJ. Stroud in twenty twenty four,
Because at the end of the day, everything you want
to accomplish in becoming better than those teams you mentioned
and everything else. If that's not the case, what are
you doing? What did you do today?
Speaker 4 (01:04:49):
In other words, it's bold, it's unexpected, it's surprising. We're
talking about the reports of this deal, and you know
talking we were seeing some of what Aaron Wilson is
describing about the It is surprising from him inside that
locker room, disappointing some of the players, and how could
it not? This is kind of what I was getting at.
It doesn't really matter what. I don't think. What hypothetical
(01:05:13):
issues might exist inside a sixty nine player NFL locker room,
they usually go away. They usually aren't significant, They don't
matter enough. If you can play, and this is on
the very low end of the if you can play scale,
because we know how many players who are actual you know,
they're breaking the law off the field, They're doing things
that would have them in jail other if they weren't
(01:05:35):
NFL players, And yet they fit right in the locker room.
Why because they can play and teams give them a
third and fifth and tenth chance because they can play.
And Laramie's nothing like any of that. But that's kind
of my point. It's such a small degree. How much
could you really weigh this into your decision that you're
trying to make yourself better, you're making the team better. Granted,
(01:05:55):
the offensive line's bad, it's not all his fault. But
he's not Is he not doing enough to help his group?
Is he not doing is he so solely individually focused
on here's my job.
Speaker 3 (01:06:06):
I block edge rusher.
Speaker 4 (01:06:09):
That's it. You guys take care of the rest. I'm
not leaning here, we're not shifting left. I know my
responsibility is there, but I'm more focused on this. And
even doing that, you know what he is doing. He's
protecting the quarterback from taking in the additional hit it
may ruin the play.
Speaker 3 (01:06:23):
But it's gonna keep CJ. Stroud up right.
Speaker 2 (01:06:25):
I can't like there's you know, Adam Schefter for example,
put the full terms out and just some of the comments.
This is why I said, it's so divided. Not sure
what the Texans are doing here? What was an offensive
line their biggest need? Now that's gonna be the first thing.
And everybody says when they hear this, because you just
traded your best offensive lineman. Texans got robbed. Seems like
(01:06:46):
a lot, but probably will be worth it. Texans definitely
get the better end of this deal. Good trade for
both sides, I mean, is it is just varying across
the board.
Speaker 3 (01:06:57):
I hope he's good. That's a lot of draft capital.
Speaker 4 (01:07:00):
See to me like good trade from both sides. Let's
spend a minute or two on the commander's side of things.
They swap fourth round picks. Okay, let's just not talk
about that. It's a swap of picks from two good teams,
and it's the same pick roughly, and it's not in
the top three round. So now instead we'll talk about
the second third and seventh. You gave up a second
third and seventh and took on a twenty plus million
(01:07:20):
dollar player for the next two years. Who's gonna block
for the blind side of Jaden Daniels although he has
hardly a blind side because he's running all over the
place because he's so freaking awesome. Where's the downside for
the Commanders? They're doing what the Texans did last offseason
with a different group of players. Why is Daniel Hunter
a Texan when CJ. Stroud's in his second year? Why
(01:07:41):
is Joe Mixon a Texan? Why Stefan Diggs a Texan?
Speaker 3 (01:07:44):
And CJ.
Speaker 2 (01:07:44):
Stroud's second year? Because they have the opportunity to win
big immediately, and everybody in the building and everybody in
the locker room knows it.
Speaker 4 (01:07:54):
Now, it's the Commanders. That's all I've changed. Pluck the
Texans name out and drop the commander's name. Why are
they trading for Laramie Tunzell because they have Jaden Daniels,
because they just played in the conference title game? Why
are they making the other moves they've made. They've been
one of the more active teams here this offseason, trying
to make their second year quarterbacks life. Their span of
(01:08:16):
their franchise is life. While they have this quarterback as
strong as possible, as quickly as possible, and you're letting
them do that because you're telling them, here's our really
good player.
Speaker 3 (01:08:26):
Well, so you're the first thing.
Speaker 2 (01:08:28):
You're having to assume that the rest of their offensive
line doesn't suck, right, and you added Laramie tunzel to it.
Speaker 4 (01:08:35):
I think that's a reasonable assumption.
Speaker 2 (01:08:37):
Yes, Okay, So Laramie Tunzell didn't help you win big
here in Houston because he was part of an offensive
line that sucked.
Speaker 3 (01:08:45):
See.
Speaker 4 (01:08:45):
I think the winning and losing it just can't be
a part of it, not on one guy, just like
it can't be for Miles Garrett or JJ Watter or
any of these guys that can't win an MVP because
of where they play. They don't play quarterback. They cannot
impact wins and losses at that level. They can't impact
your quarterbacks ability to win and lose. And they can
clearly win with the line they had last year. Sook
(01:09:05):
at the Texans. Somehow, the Commanders could clearly win with
the line they had last year.
Speaker 3 (01:09:10):
They lost one.
Speaker 4 (01:09:11):
They lost the last NFC game of the season.
Speaker 3 (01:09:15):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (01:09:16):
They were one win away and a one well played game.
Well for playing in the Super Bowl without Laramie Tons,
I've crapped on the Texans line quite a bit, so,
just to be fair, from an offensive line standpoint, pass
block win rate, run block win rate, the Texans rated
twenty second and thirty first in the NFL last year.
As a line, the Commanders ranked ninth and second in
(01:09:39):
those areas last year.
Speaker 3 (01:09:40):
He's not going to a bad line.
Speaker 2 (01:09:42):
Well, it's and it's going to make him look better
as much as he will make them look better. But
that's the thing I always felt like when they won,
it was almost in spite of the fact that CJ
didn't have enough time, And it was again, it wasn't
all on the line. CJ made mistakes, but I never
wanted to feel like, Okay, he's not reaching his potential
because of the line.
Speaker 3 (01:10:03):
And I felt like that every week, every week.
Speaker 4 (01:10:05):
And yet the whole season you said this zero times. Man,
if they just got a left tackle, a could pass block, man,
if they could just get better play out of their
left tackle. Now I can't say you didn't say I
sure wish they didn't have this left tackle, because you did,
and many others have said the same. Because of the
(01:10:25):
problems that they had and the problems that he had.
Speaker 2 (01:10:28):
But they said Texans just committed highway robbery and gain
about forty five yards of offense per game.
Speaker 3 (01:10:35):
That's a little lofty.
Speaker 4 (01:10:36):
They probably gained five to ten yards per if you
had seventeen penalties and most were five and a handful
or ten.
Speaker 3 (01:10:41):
Yeah, you did.
Speaker 4 (01:10:42):
Literally, they just improved their offense. It's a five, five
to ten yard increments every other day.
Speaker 2 (01:10:48):
It's a fascinating deal, which we will continue to discuss
here on a Monday edition of the program.
Speaker 1 (01:10:55):
The A Team on Sports Talk seven NINETYD. I'm Clinton.
Adam Wexler continues Big Ball Football batall my Sports Talk
seven ninety home for your home teams.
Speaker 2 (01:11:18):
Creating your franchise left tackle with your star rookie contract
quarterback entering his third season and when the majority of
the rest of your offensive line was brutal is a
perplexing choice by the Texans. Signed Chris Trepasso. Okay, NFL Network,
NFL dot Com.
Speaker 3 (01:11:40):
Yes whatever.
Speaker 2 (01:11:41):
The Washington Commander's account just had the and this is
I don't even know how to describe this emoji.
Speaker 4 (01:11:47):
And I tried myself. I needed to go to the source,
like find it so I can hover over it to
determine what it is. Look at us. Basically, hey, look
what's happening?
Speaker 2 (01:11:57):
Okay, just getting some someational reaction to this. Texans allowed
the fifth highest pressure rate, the eighth highest sack rate,
third most sacks, and the seventh fastest time to pressure
and have now traded away their left tackle, Laramie Tonsil.
Speaker 3 (01:12:15):
That's from Lindsay Rhodes.
Speaker 4 (01:12:17):
Yeah, and considered, I can't help but point out these
things that seem so obvious. There's only really two players
on the whole team that we talk about this about.
Talk like this about twenty two starters plus your special
team starters. How are you gonna win without blank? We
(01:12:37):
don't say it about a running back. We don't say
it about wide receivers. We don't say it about edge rushers.
We don't say it about linebackers. We don't say it
about shut down corners. We say it about left tackles
and quarterbacks. They went into each of the last two
years with zero concern about those two.
Speaker 3 (01:12:53):
Spots, So then why did they trade him?
Speaker 4 (01:12:56):
Now they have concerns about half of them.
Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
Charles Robinson had my favorite man X is broken worse
than I thought. Now it's telling me the Texans traded
Laramie Tunsel.
Speaker 3 (01:13:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:13:07):
By the way, if you hadn't heard, because you would
might not have noticed. Today is a bad day for
your social media platforms not to be operational for part
of the day. I hope it helped people realize we
get all our where do we get You get your
information from us here on the radio, and we were
live and alive, and.
Speaker 3 (01:13:25):
There's no problem.
Speaker 4 (01:13:26):
Sometimes you get information from us via social media like
the X platform, you know, at a game or as
we break news here, but we still have a hub.
You can check us out online at SportsTalk seven ninety
dot com. You're gonna have the app fired up, the
iHeartRadio app where I already know you have us number
one on your presets. Duhhh, you need to have Sports
Talk seven ninety number one on your presets. Makes your
(01:13:48):
day go by that much more easily. And you're gonna
get your information without having to go to social media
because we're here for you. Well, these outlets that employ
all these reporters, they have a hub also though, whether
it's their television product or their online product. Old school,
you actually needed to go to one of those places
as they were writing stories on it and updating blog
(01:14:11):
posts with it, all while you were wondering, I can't
believe there's been no activity in the NFL for the
last half hour. That's weird. I better not check Twitter.
Speaker 3 (01:14:20):
Huh. That's a shame.
Speaker 4 (01:14:21):
Yeah, it went out for a bit of today multiple times.
Texans have made plenty of moves, and the ones that
they've made pale in comparison to the magnitude of the
move that we've been talking about since it came down.
But bringing back both Daria and Goombawalle and Derek Barnett
off of last year's team. Reported earlier this week about
(01:14:42):
Darry reported earlier today about Barnett bringing back two former Texans.
Tremont Smith, a special teamer, has been very good the
last couple of years with Denver. He was with the
Texans the two years prior to that. He comes back.
Sheldon Rankins was on the first Timiko Ryans led Houston
Texans team on the defensive line, had one of his
best seasons, then signed a two year deal with the
(01:15:03):
Bengals starting last year. Did not go well. It was
not healthy, was not productive. He's back with the Texans
on a deal it could pay him as much as
seven million dollars, and two wide receivers are ready to
be in the Texans fold. Although one's likely to make
an impact as a wide receiver, the other one I'm
not so sure. Christian kirktrade we talked about last week
become official on Wednesday in Braxton, Barrios was reportedly signed
(01:15:26):
to a one year, two million dollar deal. I didn't
talk much about him in the opening segment when was
laying out kind of what the Texans had reportedly already done,
mainly because I'm not sure where he fits in.
Speaker 3 (01:15:37):
He didn't do anything.
Speaker 4 (01:15:39):
As a wide receiver last year for the Miami Dolphins,
tallied zero catches. I missed the bulk of the season though,
because he had ACL surgery on October thirtieth, so the
timeline for his participation in return would be a little
bit questionable. His work as a wide receiver during his
six years in the NFL has been a little hit
or miss, smaller player, slot guy most of the time.
(01:16:01):
Interesting that he was actually drafted by Nick Cassario and
Nick Kayley when they were both with the Patriots.
Speaker 3 (01:16:06):
That's where he was drafted.
Speaker 4 (01:16:07):
He was ird his first year and he was cut
before year two began, So he's played for two other
teams and not their teams, and now he's brought in here.
But Nico Collins is established, zero other players on their
roster are established, Christian Kirk is established, and the still
and what else remains. They still need someone who can
(01:16:28):
step on the field immediately Game one. That player if
they's on the roster at Xavier Hutchinson. If he's on
the roster, it's John Metchi. And I'm not sure that
they want to go into the season like that now
that they clearly have other issues, because what their offensive
look line looks like today with current Texans Fisher and
Howard at tackle, Patterson Scruggs, and Kenyan Green at guard,
(01:16:53):
that's what your current roster is. There not gonna play
with that, So it shouldn't make you grown. It doesn't
matter you don't play games. Green's name, So I had
to well, I mean, I could give it to somebody
who didn't even get on the field last year.
Speaker 3 (01:17:03):
In voluntary response.
Speaker 4 (01:17:05):
That's a major major problem, and as of today, they
have done nothing to increase its ability to play well.
I can't say they've done nothing to fix it because
their belief is getting rid of players will help, getting
rid of the money owed to them will help. Maybe
getting younger, although with tackles, I don't really care. If
(01:17:26):
you're getting younger at tackle, you don't need to. Laramie
Tunzel is not close to the end of the line.
Larry Tunseel's production's not close to the end of the line.
There's five more years of Laramie Tunzel. There's a second,
maybe third contract in front of Laramie Tunsel. If he
was looking for a restructure now not a concern like
they want to get younger. That should not be a goal.
(01:17:48):
They're not thirty five years old. These players they've let go.
Speaker 2 (01:17:51):
Like I wonder if Washington waits a year to extend
him and then does it, or if they just you know,
because when the Texans traded for Laramie Tunsel, they are
also like, hey, here's a shiny new deal.
Speaker 4 (01:17:59):
And then Nick has also extended him, so there's a
lot of money that was made here. He's acted as
his own agent through that time and has done very well.
And I think it's I don't know if it will
apply to more players in the future, because sometimes it's
just man as much guaranteed money as I can get,
I'll get, and I'm not super concerned about whatever fake
number of years is attached to it. Laramie Tunzel doesn't
(01:18:21):
sign contract with fake years because they've all been short term.
He signs a short term deal, gets premium money, and
then he's right back on the market again or right
back in position to ask his current team, Hey, you know,
I'm one of the best left tackles in football, right,
go ahead and pay me like it.
Speaker 3 (01:18:36):
And they do.
Speaker 4 (01:18:37):
And it's a strategy not other, not many other players
have taken as early in their career as he did. Financially,
it's paid off tremendously well for him.
Speaker 3 (01:18:47):
Oh my gosh, he's made tons of money.
Speaker 4 (01:18:50):
In my mind, more than he would have made had
he signed what other tackles normally signed, longer term deals
that don't necessarily earn you a second contract or lee
or for more money.
Speaker 3 (01:19:02):
He's done that. It's just because we don't.
Speaker 2 (01:19:05):
And look when when Nick Cassario, when any GM makes
deals like this that presumably have if you want to
call a contingency plan or whatever, everything has to fall
into place. The dust has to settle, the smoke cast
to clear all the cliches you can use. But they
know when they hit that send button or whatever, it's
(01:19:29):
like an email. You can't get it back.
Speaker 4 (01:19:31):
It looks like the Texans want to make a deal here, Commissioner.
I saw they posted it on Twitter. Should we approve it?
Speaker 3 (01:19:36):
It's like a tweet or it's like a loaded gun.
Speaker 4 (01:19:39):
A few minutes ago, you read off something from NFL
dot Com.
Speaker 3 (01:19:42):
I was not sure who was from. I asked you.
Speaker 4 (01:19:44):
You told me, man, I do the same back to you.
You all know who this is from. But I'm just
going to read it as an appear to guess. Yeah,
after Okay, it's on the X platform. It's a national
it's a national viewpoint. I guess you could say it's
not Houston. I'm so happy to hear that we have
traded for Laramie Tunsel exclamation point. He's one of the
best left tackles in the NFL. Will help protect our
superstar quarterback Jaden Daniels. Period super job to our GM.
(01:20:07):
Adam Peters hands clapping at Commanders all.
Speaker 3 (01:20:13):
That's who wrote it.
Speaker 4 (01:20:15):
No, he just had he just Commanders his team.
Speaker 3 (01:20:19):
Gosh, part of the organization.
Speaker 4 (01:20:24):
Yeah, we have traded for Laramie Tunsel. Yeah, but lots
of people use we and this this person used it appropriately.
Speaker 3 (01:20:32):
I'm assuming it's a player.
Speaker 2 (01:20:33):
It's not a player, not an active NFL player. He
once played another sport.
Speaker 3 (01:20:39):
I got nothing.
Speaker 4 (01:20:40):
This is from the official Twitter account of Irvin Magic Johnson.
Speaker 2 (01:20:44):
Oh my gosh, I'm surprised he didn't like lay out
the terms of the deal in the most obvious way possible.
Speaker 3 (01:20:52):
I do.
Speaker 4 (01:20:52):
It is interesting that we're in this. You know, it's
always interesting when when people inside make comments. He's a
great No, he's the most interesting because it's never run
of the mill. We always enjoy it. But I there's
two sides to this deal, and I am struggling to
like the what's the discussion, like we talked about the
(01:21:15):
hall earlier, and the viewpoint from the commanders, like this
is phenomenal, This is unbelievable. This is take the next
step caliber. If you're a commander, if you're in their
locker room, if you're on their fan base, if you're
in their front office. They took the team that just
narrowly missed winning the division, narrowly missed winning the conference,
(01:21:38):
and now they have Laramie Tunsel to help guide the
way offensively for Jake and Daniels and the rest of
their super talented offense.
Speaker 3 (01:21:45):
Well, they better win the division. Let's just get there.
Speaker 4 (01:21:48):
Oh, it's got to be better than the Super Bowl champs.
That's a bigger leap than the Texans have to make.
Speaker 3 (01:21:52):
Yeah, well, we'll see what happens.
Speaker 2 (01:21:55):
The Laramie Tunseel fallout discussion continues here on the eighteen.
Speaker 1 (01:22:01):
The A team on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:22:05):
Hey, Sparky from the Astros broadcast team.
Speaker 3 (01:22:10):
Catch every Astros game of Sports Talk.
Speaker 5 (01:22:12):
Seven ninety an iHeartRadio ass.
Speaker 1 (01:22:15):
Home of your Astros. Now the good, good, the bad
that's not good, and the ugly that's getting real ugly.
Speaker 4 (01:22:27):
With the A team, kind of feels like this should
be the good from the Texans, the bad from the Texans,
the ugly from the Texans, but it should only be
Laramie Tunseel related.
Speaker 3 (01:22:39):
That's fine with me. I'm very good.
Speaker 4 (01:22:41):
About the Laramie Tunseel trade. For those that have not heard,
Laramie Tunsel will be playing as football for the Commanders
in the near future, as in his very next game.
Speaker 2 (01:22:48):
Well, you're the goods. You have to tell us that
the Texans. This is a group effort. The Texans will
have a fourth round pick also being shipped to Washington
along with Laramie Tunzel to get a four round pick back.
They'll also get a second, third, and seventh. Those picks
will be spread out over this year and next year's draft.
The good, as we've discussed, I suppose you want to
(01:23:11):
spin it, if you want to pretend there is one, if.
Speaker 3 (01:23:13):
You want to say that, yeah, there absolutely is one.
Speaker 4 (01:23:16):
You just took one of the definitely the worst position
group on your team and said, enough of it, We're
sick of it, We're done with it. This five person
group wasn't working. And the two players who made the
most sense to get rid of, either for play or
for salary or Laramie Tunszell and Shack Mason, we've done that.
Shack Mason's being released and Laramie Tunzel has now been traded.
(01:23:39):
We've got money, whether we can utilize it this year,
the money that won't be spent on him in the future,
that's there too.
Speaker 3 (01:23:46):
That's the good.
Speaker 4 (01:23:47):
The good is we recognize a problem, we see an issue,
and we are diving in as head first as possible,
no stone unturned. You're gone. You're gone, you're starting in
a new position. You're not coming back. We're bringing in competition.
Speaker 3 (01:24:04):
That good.
Speaker 2 (01:24:05):
Well, you mentioned the term bold and if you feel
like you need to make significant changes to the most
weak position group on your roster, and it's like, it's
not a debate like we can debate about and we,
being the society that watches football, can debate about whether
or not you think this is a good trade for
the Texans based on the individual player. But the funny
(01:24:27):
thing is there's no debate that this player who all
these people who are just up in arms about the
Texans trading, they would they're lying if they think that
he was a part of a good offensive line. They're
just gonna say that he wasn't the problem, which is
kind of it's the same thing. It's semantics.
Speaker 4 (01:24:44):
He's not the problem. Okay, great, well, there's five guys
that are on the offensive line. He's not the problem.
But we're just gonna change it anyway. So brings us
to the bad. And what's the bad. I just gave
you the parameters. I gave you a good. What's the bad?
The bad is that we don't know what this will be.
You know what I mean, like, we don't know what's gonna.
Speaker 3 (01:25:01):
Look like the uncertainty. Correct, that's the best most discinct
way to put this.
Speaker 4 (01:25:05):
Because you're saving the ugly for oh my ugly.
Speaker 2 (01:25:09):
Could be this is their line, He's gonna die, that's sir.
Speaker 4 (01:25:14):
Yeah, would you have you used the word for this
year's line?
Speaker 5 (01:25:16):
Right?
Speaker 3 (01:25:17):
It was disastrous? Their play was poor.
Speaker 4 (01:25:19):
You ran through the statistics, did you know how his
percentage of pressures he was under?
Speaker 3 (01:25:24):
And we've hearst asked it. I just agreed with them.
Speaker 4 (01:25:27):
And you're telling me they're gonna they're gonna be better
coached because Cole Popovich has now been promoted off of
last year's work and Nick Cayley's been brought in because
last year's offensive problems were tied to the OC. Now
that's been fixed. Nick Cayley's here. He have zero plays
called before. I mean he's probably called Sean McVay priably
said no, that's your play, we'll run it. So he
(01:25:48):
hadn't been a full time play caller before fixed and Fixed,
and now that they don't have to send Laramie Tunsel
out there for his one penalty on seventy snaps. This
afternoon that we're so crushed by and it's such a
personal affront to his ten other teammates that he cost
the team five yards today. Now he's not here? Now
(01:26:11):
what now?
Speaker 3 (01:26:12):
What's this guy gonna do?
Speaker 4 (01:26:14):
Zero fall starts for the Texans left tackle in twenty
twenty five?
Speaker 3 (01:26:18):
And how's the offense gonna look?
Speaker 4 (01:26:20):
And how are you gonna be able to keep a
clean pocket for CJ? How do you think the edge
rushers on the Texans schedule feel about this deal? I
haven't checked the latest from our favorite in division edge
rushing poster on the X platform, Josh heinz Allen. He
couldn't believe Christian Kirk was going to become a Texan.
What do you think he can believe that he's no
(01:26:42):
longer going up against Laramie Tunsel. Do you think he's
gonna send out that Tunsil out of the division? I
don't believe this. They should be jumping for joy. The
possibility for the Texans to be worse on offensive line
this coming year probably did exist before this deal, and
(01:27:03):
now it does.
Speaker 2 (01:27:04):
That's the ugly or the flip side of it is
everything that was good about the Texans might actually get
better because they improved the offensive line overall as a
unit and were really screwed as the other members of
this division.
Speaker 4 (01:27:20):
Yeah, we mentioned some of the reports involving both this
Larmie Tunsell deal and some other moves the Texas have
been made from reports from Aaron Wilson earlier. He's going
to join the show at five o'clock this afternoon to
discuss some of the things we've brought up, some of
the hypotheticals with Larmie Tunzell's place here in this locker room.
Six years since he was acquired by Bill O'Brien and
(01:27:41):
six years of starting and six years of earning multiple
nods from his peers and appearances in the Pro Bowl
and or Pro Bowl games.
Speaker 3 (01:27:49):
And I mentioned it earlier.
Speaker 4 (01:27:50):
When the Texans were at their best in the Bill
O'Brien era, he was out there. Deshaun Watson was the quarterback.
They clearly don't have any downturns yet or maybe ever
in the Dubiko Ryans era, but he was obviously out
there for that too. He's been a part of all
these division winners. He's been a part of all these
teams that have at least won their playoff game at home,
and now he won't be and now they're going to
(01:28:11):
try to get better without him. Now they're going to
try to get better cohesive line play, win a different
scheme with a different coach, with very now we have
to say it, very different personnel. They should not be
promoting from within at multiple spots on this line.
Speaker 3 (01:28:27):
If you make a.
Speaker 4 (01:28:28):
Permanent starter out of Blake Fisher, that's one thing, but
he was already on the field end of the year.
If you keep Titus Howard a permanent starter, let's fine too.
He's been a starter here for many years at multiple spots.
The other three spots on this five person line are
essentially still one day, not even into free agency, unattended to.
(01:28:49):
So again I'll try to be fair. They've done if
they did this after they signed Dan Smith or Dan Moore,
excuse me, who was signed earlier today, off of this,
If they did this after they were the team to
give up a fourth round pick for Joe Tooney, if
they did an addition to the offensive line first, obviously
(01:29:10):
our perception will be totally different. And when I first
heard the news and you guys first heard us talking
about it, twelve or an hour ago. I did afford
them some time. I gave him till six o'clock today. No,
in reality, I'll give him to the end of the week.
The end of the week, that's it. That's Wednesday, Thursday,
and Friday. After the league year has begun. They're going
to attach a long term extension to Derrick Stingley Junior
(01:29:35):
this offseason, because I don't think in this area they're
as ill prepared or quite frankly as dumb as the
gms who can keep waiting like the one in Dallas.
You don't think the deal that Miles Garrett signed matters
to Micah Parsons and the Cowboys. Now, Michaeh might have
made it a one way street last year. So maybe
(01:29:56):
it's not all on Jerry, but they essentially have waited
on all these long term deals. And after Josh Allen
signed his long term extension or agreed to it in
the last couple of days, he almost caught up to
Dak Prescott and how much money he makes AAVY almost,
so the good, bad, the ugly. Your Texans move forward
without LT at LT. There's no Laramie Tunzel at left tackle.
(01:30:21):
He's a commander.
Speaker 2 (01:30:21):
Now when we come back, and this is kind of
going to be a carryover from the ugly segment of
the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Speaker 3 (01:30:32):
I'll tell you about one of.
Speaker 2 (01:30:34):
The things you will not be missing this upcoming season
with Laramie tunsl at your left tackle position. By the
way all the websites they are on it today, he's
already been moved to the command a lot of times.
Speaker 3 (01:30:45):
This takes a while.
Speaker 2 (01:30:46):
ESPN, for example, he is already number one on the
death chart at left tackle for the Commies. Just in
case you wonder about that sort of thing.
Speaker 1 (01:30:55):
The at on Sports Talk seven ninety Adam Clinton and
Adam Wexler. The A team now continues.
Speaker 2 (01:31:12):
The eighteen Sports Talk seven ninety here on a Monday
edition of the program, where the Texans have parted ways
with Laramie Tunsel. You mentioned he averaged one penalty per
contest last season. I was looking back at his game
log just from last year, and I knew that this
(01:31:34):
was the case. I didn't know how egregious it actually was.
So unless I'm reading this wrong, which I could be,
but I doubt it. The Texans got off to that
amazing start and then they ran into a buzz saw
at Minnesota, which traditionally has been a rough place for
them to play from the inception of the franchise. I
(01:31:57):
believe their total count was eleven, all these for eighty
eight yards that day, which is a lot.
Speaker 3 (01:32:03):
They were one. I believe they were up near the
top of.
Speaker 2 (01:32:06):
The most penalized teams in the league this year, just overall.
He had I believe six of those eleven penalties in
that game, and three of them were for false starts No.
Speaker 3 (01:32:20):
One two. Yeah, three of them were for false starts.
Speaker 4 (01:32:24):
And yeah, that was the day they drew the officiating
crew that got the memo from the league that said, hey,
today and today only, we'd like you to look for
this penalty that we don't want you to call on
the other sixteen games this team plays.
Speaker 3 (01:32:34):
And they did.
Speaker 4 (01:32:35):
Three times. Illegal formation.
Speaker 3 (01:32:36):
Yeah, he got three illegal formations.
Speaker 4 (01:32:38):
Three line up where he needed to the play was
a penalty before they even snapped it because the left
tackle lined up too far away from where he was supposed.
Speaker 2 (01:32:49):
To three times one game, and all of these were
just five yard penalties.
Speaker 4 (01:32:54):
That's what's so funny, the way you framed, You framed
this whole thing. They got off to such a good start,
so they were what four and one, right, I believe?
So okay, So he had two penalties in week one, two,
more in week two, six, in week three, two more
in week four. Did you do the quick math on that? No,
that the whole season's worth of penalties. He only had
seven penalties the rest of the season while they were losing.
(01:33:16):
They were winning, while he was getting penalized left and right.
Whatever he changed that day.
Speaker 2 (01:33:21):
It's crazy, though, because for a while there, and this
is a stretch that went from the very tail end
of the Minnesota game all the way to well, I'm
taking this back the other direction. So let me let
me rephrase this. False starts were his specialty until that
(01:33:45):
illegal formation game you're talking about, and very I mean
everybody holds every play. We always talk about that with
offensive linemen. He got a few too, but there was yeah,
he barely. It was just start or nothing.
Speaker 4 (01:34:01):
That's always been the case, and that's usually the case
with left tackles.
Speaker 3 (01:34:06):
Yeah, but their.
Speaker 2 (01:34:07):
Jumping well because they they feel like, well, I have
to everything I can possibly do, and week to week,
I don't know how much that is because I don't
know which officials we're gonna have today.
Speaker 3 (01:34:16):
I don't know which memo they got this week. He
did it.
Speaker 4 (01:34:19):
He did it every game. The games they felt like
calling it, they called it, and it's the yeah. I
mean the Kansas City team is the easiest to focus
on because everybody sees their game because it's so often
on national TV. And you know how many people were
just screaming at them. Are they really missing this? Every
snap he's rocking and they just will not call it.
(01:34:41):
Well because that day they didn't feel like calling it. Yeah,
it's something left tackles will do. They're furthest away from
the snap. They obviously aren't looking in to see it
because that cost them one tenth of a tenth of
a second. To when the edge rushers get their job
is so extremely important to the life of their quarterback
and the life of their offense. They they tried to
take every single possible advantage that they can and rocking
(01:35:03):
back and forth, knowing the snap count and essentially jumping
their own snap count to the smaller degree as you can.
What means you've jumped quickly, more quickly than the guy
on the other side, and that's what they're trying to do.
You guys, know, I probably pushed against it more than anybody. Okay, great,
he cost you five whole yards today. What about the
other sixty four snaps? Are you okay with those? Are
(01:35:25):
you okay with every others drive the entire game where
you didn't get penalized for anything?
Speaker 3 (01:35:30):
Is that fine with you?
Speaker 4 (01:35:32):
He's keeping your quarterback up. He's not worried that talk
about Miles Garrett today. You know what we didn't talk
about when the Texans played the Cleveland Browns in the
playoffs two years ago, Miles Garrett because Laramie Tunsil said,
forget it. Your day is done. It ain't begun yet,
and it's never gonna begin. You think they're gonna do
that this year to the Bills pass rush, the Gis
(01:35:55):
pass rush, the Ravens pass you know, all the first
place teams pass rush, and other great defenses they'll face
along the way.
Speaker 2 (01:36:02):
It just if if Tunsil and what good he brought
to the game is out, but the overall complexion of C. J.
Stroud's protection gets better, I just you'll forget about that
the instant.
Speaker 3 (01:36:19):
That's the case, for sure, it has to be the case.
Speaker 4 (01:36:21):
It has to be the case, and the other part
of it is the you know, smirky nuts. You don't
have to say it this way, but I do. But
everyone's gonna feel better. Their locker room's gonna have a
nice vibe. The culture will be neat, they'll they'll all
like each other. They'll they'll have everyone pulling in the
same direction. They'll have nothing but team first. Guys, great,
(01:36:43):
can you play?
Speaker 1 (01:36:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:36:46):
A lot was said about the Astros clubhouse, especially in
light of the scandal, but none of that matters. If
they're not hitting the ball the way they did, none
of that matters. If they're not one of the best
defenses out there, none of that matters. You know, it's
great to be a you know, camaraderie and come together
and it's us against the world.
Speaker 3 (01:37:03):
But they happen to be really good too. So I
don't know, I just for okay, what do we always
talk about for.
Speaker 2 (01:37:10):
The longest time with the Texans man, I think I
just get some guys with some checkered pasts.
Speaker 4 (01:37:14):
You know, Bob McNair just doesn't think they're advocating for it.
We were just saying, maybe you can a guy.
Speaker 3 (01:37:19):
But we were.
Speaker 2 (01:37:20):
Playing at the Baltimore's and the Steelers of the world
and saying, you know, these guys can be not great.
Speaker 3 (01:37:26):
Citizens and still win football games.
Speaker 2 (01:37:29):
You don't have to, you know, And Bob McNair for
the longest time, I'm not having that guy on my roster.
I'm not having him. Well, that's not happening. I'm not
even draft that guy.
Speaker 4 (01:37:37):
Well, one doesn't equal the other for sure. That's why
I think we were always there. One more quick note,
since Ian Rappaport just mentioned it as expected, the Texans
are still in the free agent wide receiver game. Chiefs
free agent wide receiver has agreed to terms with the
Houston Texans. His name one Justin Watson, pretty far down
(01:37:58):
the list of their prime targets, but that's more along
the lines. I thought they might be able to shoot
a little higher than that for what they their needs are.
Because this isn't a guy that in two or three
years just really hasn't gotten the opportunity. This is a
guy headed into year eight in the NFL. Last three years,
(01:38:20):
he's been out there pretty much to all three years
they were all with Kansas City. He's never had a
breakout year. He's had a couple of nice games, he's
been a nice part of their wide receiver group that's
been very much turned over over the past three years.
But he never really advanced to This is a guy
we want on the field. Fifty five sixty snaps a game.
Seen the new John Metchih He's different. I would describe
(01:38:44):
him very differently. He's a bigger, taller receiver, less of
the skill set that Mechi has.
Speaker 3 (01:38:50):
I just meant from the roster spots standpoint.
Speaker 4 (01:38:52):
Hey, honestly, this is the type of player that's in
competition for a roster spot. He doesn't take Mechi's unless
he outplays him, which is no given. This is just
we need more veterans here. We need more players. We've
got to create competition, and Justin Watson will do that.
Four years in Tampa, three years in Kansas City, twenty
eight years old, will be twenty nine for the upcoming season.
(01:39:14):
Like I said, a little bit bigger receiving target. But
I don't know. I wouldn't I wouldn't attach the word
special to him. No, he's a player on your roster, probably.
Speaker 2 (01:39:26):
Like Texans offensive line watch now becomes the most fascinating
thing over the next handful of weeks.
Speaker 3 (01:39:33):
I hope not weeks.
Speaker 2 (01:39:34):
Well, I'm just giving us room to get to the
NFL Draft, but I'm guessing they make a move before that.
Speaker 3 (01:39:42):
I hope so.
Speaker 2 (01:39:43):
But they have a lot of draft capital to do
something about it as well.
Speaker 4 (01:39:46):
Aaron Wilson gonna join the show next to go inside
the Laramie Tounsel trade to the Commanders.
Speaker 2 (01:39:55):
The A teen on Sports Talk seven ninety I'll tell
you never getting traded Big City Wings. Why would you
get rid of the best in the entire city.
Speaker 3 (01:40:06):
And that's what they are. They're Houston's wing Joint.
Speaker 2 (01:40:08):
Food is made fresh daily, wall the wall TVs to
watch the games, a family friendly restaurant, and I do
mean that with something on the menu for everyone. And
on top of that, wherever you are listening to the
sound of our voices, there is a location nearby because
they got thirteen convenient locations.
Speaker 3 (01:40:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:40:25):
Good news is sometimes when you're within range of our voices,
you might actually be inside Big City Wings. So you
can see us too, right there on those TVs that
you mentioned. Made to order items delicious, fresh, awesome, tremendous wings,
bone in, boneless wings.
Speaker 3 (01:40:38):
Whatever it is you're looking for.
Speaker 4 (01:40:39):
Desserts are great daily specials on food and drink, and
I mean every single day including Mondays, Dollar Tenders all day,
bud Lights, and Ultrusts throughout the evening. So make your
way on over to one of the thirteen area Big
City Wing joints. Big City Wings Houston's wing joint.
Speaker 1 (01:41:00):
Lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking Your Teams series,
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team A.
Speaker 4 (01:41:12):
Team five o'clock here on the eight Team. Time to
(01:41:34):
talk a little bit more Houston Texans. Our good friend
and Texans insider both here and at KPRC Channel too,
Aaron Wilson. The Texans have made a bunch of moves today.
Speaker 2 (01:41:44):
The only one that's garnered our attention for the last
several hours, though, is the one that sends their starting
left tackle for the past six years to the Washington Commanders,
with four draft picks coming back this way, all the
ones essentially a pick swap of Fourth's Aaron, why did
the Texans trade Laramie Tunsil?
Speaker 5 (01:42:07):
If near horizon things in it?
Speaker 2 (01:42:13):
HM, Well, we will try to get that remedied. It's
always a fantastic problem to have here at the station.
But that is the that's gonna be the not only
the question moving into the draft, but you know, the
question as this shakes out, whether or not you think
it was a good deal, whether or not. You know,
(01:42:33):
there's all sorts of big trades you can point to
in Houston sports history, and I think as soon as
you hear that name or those names that are involved,
you kind of have a feeling one way or the other,
or maybe you have a you know somewhere in between.
Speaker 3 (01:42:46):
Ah, would you have made that deal? Probably not.
Speaker 2 (01:42:48):
Ah. I definitely think they should have made that deal.
It could have gone either way. You hardly ever hear that.
So why they ended up trading for or trading Laramie
Tunsel Aaron is the question that was asked, So we'll
hopefully get your answer this time around.
Speaker 1 (01:43:04):
They moved on.
Speaker 5 (01:43:06):
They were not big in the YEA and they're best
interests and his best interest in communicating that.
Speaker 4 (01:43:13):
You can go ahead and cut him off again because
Sarin is not a chipmunk, even though he's portraying one
on our show, and we apologize for that.
Speaker 3 (01:43:21):
Technical issues are just the best O.
Speaker 4 (01:43:24):
There's the same ones every day at this time. So
I don't know that they're fixable, because otherwise we would
have fixed them.
Speaker 3 (01:43:30):
I really want to hear it.
Speaker 2 (01:43:31):
Aaron has to say too, and I know a lot
of you guys do as well, because he's in that
locker room all the time. Aaron and I had interesting
conversations about the offensive line, not only going into that
game at Kansas City, and obviously after that game, you
got to remember that game, the regular season one a
(01:43:53):
very very somber Texans locker room after what happened to
Tank Dell. And you know you're not gonna that's gonna
override every bit of the question and answer session you're
gonna have in the locker room. But you know it's
it's just for a third time. Hey, Aaron, what did
the Texans trade Laramie Tunsel?
Speaker 5 (01:44:13):
Yeah? How does that sound better?
Speaker 4 (01:44:15):
Oh my god, you're a regular les human being now,
all right?
Speaker 5 (01:44:19):
Thanks?
Speaker 6 (01:44:19):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (01:44:20):
The way it was explained to the Punsil camp is
that it was in their best interest and they thought
his best interest to part ways at this time. It
was a situation where if they have some big things
coming down the pike financially, they'll make their extinctly the
highest paid corner. I believe this off season and then
a year from now, Will Anderson Junior and CG. Straw
(01:44:41):
will become eligible for new contracts. So they weaken the
left tackle spot, but they will try to bolster it
some other ways. That plan unclear right now. There's not
a lot out there that's outstanding. Maybe they can trade
for somebody, but I think it's tough. They do have time.
This talented Blake Fisher, who have some left tackle experience
(01:45:04):
on the roster currently, But yeah, it's a big move
and he leaves C. J. Stroud's windside a bit vulnerable
at the moment. But they don't play a game un
till September, if they've got time to address this position.
But yeah, definitely surprised and disappointed some teammates. And no,
I know that Tunsall was not happy to be traded,
(01:45:24):
wanted to stay, but business is business and they move on.
Speaker 4 (01:45:29):
Well, he's certainly in a good situation, you would think,
and he went from a situation of Miami to a
better one here. Now he goes from Houston to a
better one or at least as comparable as one there.
But I'm curious as he laid out some of these
future financial considerations, all of which I'm sure we've talked
about many times. Stingley's deal gets done this offseason, the
other deals you mentioned in the future, so the impact
(01:45:49):
of those deals wouldn't really have a huge play on
this year's current cap situation. But considering Laramie's deal that
he's playing under right now, is there some thought some
sense to be made that trading him currently this offseason
to get something that they got in return the three
draft picks that aren't the pick swap for the fourth.
(01:46:10):
In order to do that, in order to get that haul,
they needed to trade him with time on his contract,
not just one year where it'd be attached with well,
we don't want that player unless he's going to sign
with us long term, and even so, we're not going
to give you as much. Did they make this deal
today to get more hal Yes.
Speaker 5 (01:46:27):
And the fact is that as he gets a year older,
he has had some knee issues in the past, it
gets tougher to trade him and get this kind of hall.
So it's the best deal they can make today and
a year from now. No, there's no first round draft
pick coming for a player that's going to be thirty two,
not this year, but next year. So in August soil
(01:46:50):
subway to thirty first birthday doesn't mean that there's an
expiration day that he doesn't know allow to get football
left in him. But I think they balanced the opportunity
to have draft pick compensation and they simply want to
overhaul the line after a rough year for the offensive
line in general. And I know he only allowed two
to have facts. We did have a lot of penalties.
(01:47:11):
He's a part of this offensive line and I think
they're going to look too overhaul in terms of leadership everything.
So it's not just him. You know, Shack Mason got
the acts the other day. They'll get nine million. It's
not just money, it's not just performance. It's a matter
of all of it put together that leads to a
move like this. But yeah, it's definitely a franchise shifting
(01:47:36):
move to have Larmie Council no longer protecting Cjstrial. But
you know, all things come to an end, and it
did today for Larmie Counscle. I can say this, he's
very popular at locker room. It wasn't like, you know,
players didn't like him or coaches. He had no issues.
Wasn't some kind of locker room lawyer. There's been a
(01:47:57):
few things out there on social media from people I
don't think know much about the team or are close
to the situation, but that's okay. That's what happens. People
want to It's never just one thing, right when you
do a deal like this, it's many films and they
move on. But they you know, don't can the trade compensation.
(01:48:18):
It just depends, you know, does he plays an all
pro level with the commanders. If he does trade, don't
look is good? It really to be continued on this one.
Speaker 2 (01:48:27):
We're talking to Aaron Wilson here on Sports Talk seven
ninety about the Laramie Tunsel trade and yeah, I think
you know what you just got done, saying I was
hypothetically wondering aloud if that had.
Speaker 3 (01:48:38):
Anything to do with this deal.
Speaker 2 (01:48:40):
But also I was wondering and you might not know
the answer to this question, but I think it's a
it's a very important one. This is the left tackle.
This is the blind side protector for CJ Stroud. Do
you think CJ Stroud was consulted about this deal or
do you think he was at least made aware that
this was going to happen before it hit the public.
Speaker 5 (01:49:02):
I would doubt that they would do that or that
might not please everyone. But I don't think that they
don't double check with him. It's not that type of situation.
They don't even get in Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes,
and they definitely did do that with Tom Brady New England,
where they double checked with the player. Heyes, wanted me
to know. I think it was they found out, I
(01:49:25):
guess about the trade. In terms of the tunsil camp,
this was about five ten minutes before the announcement. They
were actually contacted by the commanders win by the Texans,
so it was kind of a gang bang. I got
a call a little bit before and I needed to
get someone direct we'd be able to report, and I
(01:49:47):
did to get it in the timely manner. But yeah,
it happened fast, came together, and I would say Adam
Peters and Nick Caserio, who are former roommates when both
were good in Patriots Spouts, good friends, and they did
a good job of keeping this out of wraps until
it was done, so it wasn't leaking out that they
(01:50:10):
were working on the trade. It was done by that point.
It's just a matter of finding out. What's the drafted compensation. Yeah,
it was a deal done between two friends, longtime friends
that used to play pick up basketball in Foxboro together. Yeah,
they did some business today.
Speaker 4 (01:50:27):
Uh, considering what they have and you brought up, you know,
their tackles, do you believe that the two tackles they
have are likely to be starting next year with say
Blake Fisher at right tackle and Titus Howard at left.
Speaker 5 (01:50:44):
I think that's a stroke possibility if Sarahl to go
out there, no rookies necessarily going to plant those guys.
I think that unless you can get involved with a
left tackle from another team or someone that you know
is comparable, maybe a lot of Pro Bowl but like
you know, a solid starter. And this wasn't a great
(01:51:04):
tackle market for free agency. It's a pretty good guard market.
I expect them to diff into that at some point.
But I think it's a strong possibility that these are
the guys. But we're still in March, you know, a
long time between now September. But as it stands right now, yeah,
I would line up with those guys. He's got to
pick who's the right tackle, who's the left tackle? Hour
(01:51:27):
to go out experienced at left tackle played it before.
That's what Fisher I think was supposed to do, but
wound up at right tackle, and I could see them
adding to the position. I think there's gonna be at
least another tackle coming to the roster.
Speaker 4 (01:51:41):
To answer your question, very interesting to watch the day
they drafted Blake Fisher last year of Friday Night Say
two of the draft. I said he was drafted to
be a starter in twenty twenty six. Did not envision
it would play out the way it has, but it
looks like they're very well may have him as a
starter there. Keep following Aaron Wilson right here on Sports
Talk seven ninety, over there at KPRC Channel two, and
of course at Aaron Wilson underscore NFL more moves coming
(01:52:04):
both here and league wide. Aaron, we always appreciate the
insight and your time and patience today.
Speaker 3 (01:52:10):
Thank you.
Speaker 4 (01:52:11):
Appreciate Dan also making that connection third times a charm.
We appreciate that Texans have also according to Aaron, and
didn't get a mention that with him before we hit
the break here.
Speaker 3 (01:52:21):
They want their defense to be good again. Go figure.
Speaker 4 (01:52:24):
Darryl Taylor of the Chicago Bears five point twenty five million.
He wants, he wants that money from cal He's going
to become a Houston Texan. Derek Barnett, Darryl Taylor, Will Anderson,
and Denico Audrey or and excuse me, Danielle Hunter. Probably
your top four edge rushers. It might open the door
(01:52:44):
for them to do something other than keep Denico Autry.
He's in the second year of his deal, that's an option,
or maybe he's playing more inside a lot to play out.
We're not even fully through day one of the tampering
period here in the NFL. More on your Texans, What next? Well,
that's next.
Speaker 1 (01:53:04):
The eight on Sports Talk seven ninety. We now returned
to Adam Clinton and Adam wexlerth on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:53:17):
Thanks again to Aaron Wilson joining us last segment. It's
been a very, very busy day. It's not often that,
and I'm trying to figure out. Let me look back here. Yeah,
Larry Tunsell got traded just after three o'clock, or at
least the announcement came out to the Washington Commanders and
the draft picks coming back, the swaps of the fourth
(01:53:38):
rounders and everything that fell out right after we got
into our first real official hours the Astros and Blue
Jays game kind of ate into the beginning part of
when our show usually starts today, so we weren't on
the air but maybe twenty to thirty minutes before this happened,
and it's been NonStop conversation about it ever since, as
it should be when the only left tackle c J.
(01:54:00):
Stroud has ever had protect him on the NFL level
is now gonna be in Washington playing for the Commanders
next year. And if you listen to Aaron Wilson last segment,
you know he's pretty certain that another tackle will be
added to the roster, but wasn't particularly enthusiastic about the trade.
Speaker 3 (01:54:24):
Market for something like that, because.
Speaker 2 (01:54:25):
We always talk about this, if it's a good left tackle,
you're very rarely trading him. And that's what goes back
to what he said about, you know, locker room issues.
I'm just you're you're asking me to believe if that's
the case, and it very may well, you know, may
very well be the case. That the the biggest overriding
(01:54:50):
factor as to why Laramie Tunsel is no longer a
Houston Texan is because you're about to pay Derek Stingley Jr.
Speaker 3 (01:54:59):
Will Anderson Jr.
Speaker 5 (01:55:01):
And c J.
Speaker 2 (01:55:01):
Stroud, And I'm you know, I'm obviously would rather have
those three on the team versus Laramie Tunsel because we've
seen what happens when it's basically just Laramie Tunzel on
the team. But boy, left, tackles that are able to
protect your quarterback's blind side do not just grow on trees.
(01:55:23):
So maybe they will trade up to get a guy
that they think can answer the call in the draft.
But it sounded to me like there's a good chance
that Titus Howard and Blake Fisher are your tackles next year.
And if that's the case, I just I'm gonna have
a hard time thinking the offensive line got better. An
(01:55:46):
offensive line that was much worse in year two of c. J.
Stroud than year one of c J. Stroud. You know,
it's interesting when you talk about the type of signings
that I just mentioned, the Derek Stingley's of the world,
the you know, there's guys around the league that are
waiting on this and JJ Watt weighed in on this
(01:56:08):
very situation, and this was, you know, long before the
Laramie Tunzel news came down. But he was talking about
the Bengals and the Cowboys, and Wex has mentioned this
a million times, so I know he's patting himself on
the back until he's bleeding on his drive over to
Toyota Center right now. If he's listening but talking about,
you know, the Jamar Chases and the Micah Parsons of
(01:56:30):
the world. JJ Watt said, reward your players earlier and
reaped the benefits in the long run. Dragging it out
not only ends up costing more, it creates unnecessary tension.
The longer you wait, the higher the price. That last
part Wex has probably said until he's blew in the face,
and it is. It's why the Texans, I think, have
(01:56:55):
not only extended Nico Collins, but have now restructured Nico
Collins in the same calendar year. But they just wanted
to get that done. It's why they're going to try
and do the same thing with Derek Stingley Junior and
sooner rather than later with CJ. Stroud and Will Anderson Junior.
The numbers two and three, respectively picks of that twenty
three draft, and here you have Micah Parsons and Jamar
(01:57:17):
Chase still not locked up. And what's interesting about the
name Micah Parsons is that you could bring that around
to what happened today because he also reacted to the
Laramie Tunzell trade. Laramie Tunzel is now going to, for
all intents and purposes, line up against Micah Parsons should
they get that deal done.
Speaker 3 (01:57:38):
Twice a year at least.
Speaker 2 (01:57:41):
And you know, if the Dallas Cowboys ever get their
act together, then maybe they'll meet in the postseason as well.
But the Commanders, you know, went on a very deep
run and now their line, which was already good, just
got better. If you believe that Laramie Tunzel at left
tackle is a good thing for your franchise, and I
do think the Washington for one, did, because that's why
(01:58:01):
they traded a boatload of picks for him.
Speaker 3 (01:58:04):
So MICHAEH.
Speaker 2 (01:58:04):
Parsons looks at Adam Schefter's tweet from earlier about two
hours ago, and he announced the trade, saying the Texans
are trading five time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Laramie Tunsel
to the Washington Commanders for a package of picks.
Speaker 3 (01:58:18):
He quote with you that it's like WTF.
Speaker 2 (01:58:23):
I don't know if that's like just talking about he
can't believe the Texans traded Laramie Tunsel. If he's talking
about I can't believe one of two teams ahead of
mine for sure in the NFC East just got even better.
And specifically, my position and my job trying to get
after the quarterback just got a whole heck of a
(01:58:44):
lot harder. That's probably where he went with that, or
where he was going with that. But yeah, Michaeh. Parsons
with three little letters reacting to that trade, a trade
that I don't know if it's shaken the NFL, but
it's certainly shaken Houston to believe that, you know, some
of these some of these Texans fans are not doing
(01:59:04):
very well with this, and I get it. I get
it where people like WEX are coming from as well.
All Right, you might not have liked this, that and
the other, but he was right up there near the
top of the list with lowest percentage of basically letting
guys get after and hit your quarterback. And if your
main complaint, as it is for one Adam Clanton, that'll
(01:59:27):
be me, is the fact that the Texans offensive line
just is not getting the job done protecting CJ. Stroud
it's franchise quarterback. Well, then you better come up with
a plan or you better have a plan in place
as to how you're gonna spell not only left tackle,
but the other four positions along that offensive line to
make sure that he's not wearing turf more often than not,
(01:59:47):
because nobody got after, uh or no, nobody was gotten
after at the quarterback position more than CJ.
Speaker 3 (01:59:54):
Stroud last year.
Speaker 2 (01:59:55):
And it has been it's been well chronicled, it's been
well doted, it's been beaten like a dead horse that
this is going to have to be something that they
tackle this offseason. So the first, well, I guess it's
the second big offensive line related move that is made
after the Shaq Mason release is trading your left tackle
(02:00:21):
and no real visible, at least contingency plan is in place. Now.
Speaker 3 (02:00:28):
Again, I said this earlier.
Speaker 2 (02:00:30):
You know, when stuff like this happens, you want to
kind of wait, you want to lay out you don't
want to be the knee jerk reactor. Was as easy
for somebody like me to say. But you know, until
you see the dust settle, until you see the smoke clear,
you're not feeling great about the Texans offensive line, right
about now, cause you've got a second year kid that
(02:00:55):
is going to be tasked with playing one of your
tackle positions as it stands, and the other guy has
been probably underwhelming, would be the nicest way to put
Titus Howard, But yet they've extended him. All of you
that thought the Texans have quote invested so much in
their offensive line, well you're about to find out unless
(02:01:16):
something changes, just how much that investment and just how
that investment is going to play out, because the best
member of that not very good offensive line just walked
out that door. I do still think that a draft
play is in the works, just don't know what it is.
Don't know if they're wanting to trade up or if
(02:01:38):
they think they can get somebody at the back end
of the first round that's gonna help this In this
regard of protecting your not even extended yet third year
superstar quarterback.
Speaker 3 (02:01:51):
I think he'll be a superstar. But that's the other thing.
If you think CJ.
Speaker 2 (02:01:57):
Shroud regressed last year, and you think it's any combination
of him versus the offensive line not being being able
to protect him properly, whatever you think the percentages are
for each of those scenarios, because I think those are
the two biggest factors at play.
Speaker 3 (02:02:13):
You know, what did CJ. Stroud do or not do?
Speaker 2 (02:02:15):
And how bad was that offensive line at protecting him
in pass protection? You know, it's how is that going
to get better from where you stand right now in
March tenth, twenty twenty five, having traded Laramie Tunzel, Because
if if you don't, let's just say you think that
the answer is in the draft, right, Okay, Well that's
(02:02:39):
still a rookie. You're tasked with doing whatever you think
is going to make it a better cohesive five man unit.
Speaker 3 (02:02:47):
Going forward.
Speaker 2 (02:02:48):
And I just think that's a lot of confidence and
a lot of pressure to put into whomever that is,
plus the guys that are already in place. So I was,
I'll be honest with you, when Aaron Wilson, who again,
he knows his stuff, he knows what he's talking about.
He's in there every single day. He's not somebody that
will stay something like this lightly. But when Aaron Wilson
(02:03:12):
didn't really sound like, you know, the alternative to playing
those two tackles was at play, I was. I was alarmed,
and I was further alarmed when it seemed like the
overriding factor and making this decision was because you had
big contracts that are coming up.
Speaker 3 (02:03:31):
I'm all for CJ.
Speaker 2 (02:03:32):
Stroud obviously, but Will Anderson Junior and Derek Stingley Junior
being a part of this team long term, I think
they have to be in order for you to win
at the highest level. But in order to win at
the highest level, you got to have a franchise quarterback.
And a franchise quarterback is only as good as the
offensive line in front of him, because even if you
have a guy that can, that has the escapability and
(02:03:54):
on and on and on, it can go badly south
in a hurry. See our G three in case you
missed it. Things we have not gotten to Coming up next.
Speaker 1 (02:04:06):
The Age on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 6 (02:04:10):
This is Jabari Smith Jafari for three Smith watchest It
stay cut with the iHeartRadio app here every Rockets game
on Sports Talk seven nineties.
Speaker 3 (02:04:21):
Sure well that music means in case you missed it.
So we get to some of the.
Speaker 2 (02:04:28):
Things we have not talked about today, which is probably
a long list considering all we've talked about is Laramie
Tunsel being traded. But before we hand things off to
Dan here. I don't know if you're a follower on
social media, specifically the Instagram variety of any of the
Houston Texans or any athletes in general. I tend to
(02:04:50):
follow most of the ones that are currently here in town,
but I tend to also unfollow them when they leave town.
At Titus Howard fifty eight, just a black screen with
the text I'm sick right now and the crying tears emoji,
just in case you're wanting a litmus test on how
(02:05:11):
other members of the offensive line are doing in light
of the news that Laramie Tunsel is a Washington commander.
Rolls right out the tongue.
Speaker 3 (02:05:18):
Dan definitely does.
Speaker 6 (02:05:20):
And I mean, as you heard Aaron allude to, very
popular in the locker room, and the offensive line usually
regarded as the closest group of any of the position
groups on football teams, so you can kind of understand that.
But something else that Aaron had mentioned about the Texans
terming this, I guess unofficially as in the best centrist
for both sides to move on. Now, It's no secret
(02:05:42):
that Laramie Tonsel he would start training camp late, he
would have veteran rest days, all these different types of things.
I bring that up because this was Demico Ryans during
his end of season press conference when he said this
very thing, And as soon as he said it, I
sat up straight because I was like, Oh, he's talking
about somebody individually.
Speaker 8 (02:06:03):
It's very hard to show up the first day of
off season training to expect yourself to be ready to
go at training camp. That's just a little too late,
and there's not enough time than nine week window to
get yourself ready to go.
Speaker 3 (02:06:16):
For the season.
Speaker 6 (02:06:18):
Buy or so he's talking about Laramy Tunsel right there
of yeah, hey, like we start camp, we need you
like we need you there, We need you part of
this line, and we need you ready to go.
Speaker 2 (02:06:30):
So that's why when Aaron Wilson said what he said
about the locker room and about you know, people on
social media not knowing and then look all that's probably
accurate because nobody's in there as much as he is.
I don't think there's anybody there that's more than he
is unless they're a member of the organization.
Speaker 3 (02:06:50):
But there's just too many things like that out there.
Speaker 2 (02:06:56):
There are other people I've talked to that are adamant
that even if it's not a locker room thing.
Speaker 3 (02:07:07):
It's not a.
Speaker 2 (02:07:09):
You know, football is a number one priority necessarily thing.
Speaker 3 (02:07:13):
It's his job.
Speaker 2 (02:07:14):
It's again, these are all just speculative opinions one way
or the other.
Speaker 6 (02:07:20):
He's good at it, he doesn't necessarily love what goes
into doing it.
Speaker 2 (02:07:24):
And look how many times have we talked about athletes
like that, and sometimes they're so good that it supersedes
that and then can get away with it. You know,
like a perfect example, two different kinds of approaches to
the same game that happened to be very good friends
(02:07:47):
until they weren't. Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley. And I'm
not saying Laramy Tunsel is Charles Barkley. I just mean that, like,
think about what Charles would have been considering what he
was had he really dedicated himself to the physical side
of things a little bit more than he did. Shaq
and Kobe, Yeah, I mean Shaq playing his way into
(02:08:10):
shape every year. Kobe wasn't that guy. And you can't really, honestly,
you can't manufacture that. You can't try and put that
in somebody if it's not already there. That's honestly psychopathic
in a lot of ways the way Kobe and especially
Jordan were, I'm not asking Laramy Tunzel to do that.
(02:08:31):
I'm just you know, he, whether fair or not, he
did have a bit of a reputation from that standpoint.
Just how it was it start, you know what, it
started on draft night, probably a little unfairly. But once
you're in the NFL, well, then the reason you fell
in the draft because of a photo and all that
(02:08:51):
kind of stuff, that's wayside stuff. But now you've got
your resume, and you know, while a lot of your
on field play is you know, like Wex would say,
of the elite variety, why is that kind of stuff
attached to you? It's not attached to everybody. So I
just wonder about that. I don't doubt Aaron Wilson. I
(02:09:14):
don't necessarily disagree completely with Wex on the elite play.
Speaker 3 (02:09:20):
I don't know if i'd call him an elite left
tackle though.
Speaker 2 (02:09:23):
Just because Wex says he's elite doesn't mean I think
he's elite.
Speaker 3 (02:09:27):
That's how this show works. What else you got?
Speaker 2 (02:09:30):
All? Right?
Speaker 3 (02:09:31):
Baseball news?
Speaker 6 (02:09:32):
The Yankees finally make the announcement Garrett Cole done for
twenty twenty five he's gonna undergo TJ.
Speaker 2 (02:09:38):
Yeah, that's real sad. That's real, real sad. They finally
made it to the World Series last year. They didn't win,
they made it, and now their highest compensated pitcher, the
ace of their rotation, has has Tommy John surgery. And
you know, not without having anything in front of me,
(02:09:59):
I am just I'm positive that Yankees fans were full
of well wishes when that happened.
Speaker 3 (02:10:05):
To Justin Berlander a few years back.
Speaker 2 (02:10:08):
But it's okay when they did that because you know,
the astros is cheated and all that, so it's different.
I don't wish for anybody to get hurt. I don't
wish for anybody to be injured. I also don't care
that the Yankees three hundred and twenty four million dollar
pitcher has to miss the next year and probably won't
be nearly the picture he was for two full seasons.
Also will not lose a second of sleep over that, all.
Speaker 6 (02:10:31):
Right, Well, at least there's some good news on the
Christian Walker front. So we talked about it a little
bit on Friday, that he got the MRI no strain
on the left obleiaque. That's good news. He's back in
West Palm Beach. He's running and stretching with the team,
still waiting a few days before he picks up a
bat again.
Speaker 2 (02:10:48):
Yeah, so obliques are you know, tricky, kind of like
hamstrings in that way.
Speaker 3 (02:10:53):
You don't want to rush it, You don't want to
do anything like that.
Speaker 2 (02:10:57):
My guess is you are slow roll the crap out
of this if you're the Astros, because you can't.
Speaker 3 (02:11:06):
You can't lose what they lost.
Speaker 2 (02:11:09):
And then one of the you know, supplementals so to speak,
replacements of the production that you watched walk out the
door in various ways, can't play for a stretch, you know,
don't You don't want a different version of Jose to
bray you all over.
Speaker 3 (02:11:26):
Again at first base.
Speaker 2 (02:11:27):
And by that I mean the unavailability for whatever reason.
But yeah, I I I would definitely expect them to
slow roll this, and Dan, I would expect them to
not really be forthcoming about it in any way, shape
or form.
Speaker 3 (02:11:42):
Dude, I talked about that on Saturday.
Speaker 6 (02:11:44):
Is I mean, I'm glad to see or at least
believe that things are progressing nicely for Christian Walker, but
I'm like, don't put this back on us, Like I'm
talking to the Astros in this regard. Don't put this
back on us whenever we immediately assume the worst because
you guys have slow played it so many times with
injuries that it's you know again, Oh it's a little
(02:12:05):
bit of discomfort. And then three months later like what, like,
how do we even get from one point to the
other there, I you're losing me on that of like
at first trying to say, ah, you know, day to day, Well,
we'll take a look at it, and then all of
a sudden, it's justin Verlander and you're out for a
month and a half like that.
Speaker 2 (02:12:23):
They're the ones doing this, not us. Yeah, it's it's
not fun because here's the thing. You want to know
what the Astros actually are. And if the Astros don't
have a fully healthy Christian Walker to play first base
to start twenty twenty five, not really optimistic. I'll just
be honest, great pitching still available. By the way, Cam
(02:12:48):
Smith's making the opening day roster. I'll just go ahead
and say it now. You guys can tell me I'm
crazier that I need to slow play that. What are
you doing if you If he doesn't, I get it.
Speaker 3 (02:13:00):
I know all the rules. I'm not supposed to think that.
I'm just being a fan boy.
Speaker 2 (02:13:03):
Yeah, I'd like Cam Smith on my opening day roster
and playing right field.
Speaker 1 (02:13:07):
Call me crazy the eight on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (02:13:14):
What are you gonna watch all of these athletes we
just mentioned? Are you gonna watch it with SOSO vision
or are you going to watch it with twenty twenty vision?
That is life changing from Berkeley I Center. You'll see better,
You'll live better because of it. I absolutely guarantee it.
That's what Berkeley Eye Center is all about. So, whether
you're going to a game, whether you're just gonna watch
(02:13:36):
one on TV, whatever you are doing, why would you
do it with less than twenty twenty vision? Fitting Lasik
into your current budget, however, isn't always easy, So let
Berkeley do it for no cost. They're gonna customize a
payment plan with savings financing and maybe a little insurance
coverage that will have you seeing better and living better
in about sixty seconds. All you gotta do is give
(02:13:58):
them a phone call seven one three five six eyes
seven one three five two six e y E s
Let Berkeley put Lasik in your future easily and affordably
all in about sixty seconds. Seven one three, five two
six Eyes is the number to call today for Berkeley
I Center.
Speaker 1 (02:14:16):
It's the Hey, Team Clinton, Pat, Adam Wexler, Fine Sports
Talk seven ninety, your rockets, your astros, your voice.
Speaker 2 (02:14:31):
Just an absolutely fascinating weekend that bled into the opening
half hour or so of our show. I honestly thought
we would get to a number of things we didn't
get to today that just immediately got tossed out the
window because Laramie Tunsel got traded from the Texans. But
if you think about, you know, what, what what happened
(02:14:56):
between when we left here on Friday afternoon and you
know when we got back in here today, it's insane.
We haven't even mentioned the fact that Josh Allen got extended,
massive extension, earned every penny of it, by the way,
you know.
Speaker 3 (02:15:12):
It just all sorts of stuff.
Speaker 2 (02:15:15):
We kind of briefly mentioned the Garrett Cole News kind
of thought that was the case all weekend long. I'll
tell you this. When I saw that it was an elbow,
I was like, oh, he's done. Like you kind of know,
especially on with the situation when it happens and you know,
as soon as I saw the well we're looking for
(02:15:36):
a second opinion, that sound familiar Astros fans. That was
justin Verlander and you meanwhile, you had Chandler Rome over
here saying, hey, he's done, guys, you can read all
the articles you want. He's done. And people just eviscerating
Chandler because they're stupid. Who knows more about the Astros
than pretty much anybody that is, you know, covering the
(02:15:57):
team not named Brian McTaggart. I mean, those two, that's
that's where I would go. But uh yeah, like I
just was convinced that that's it. Just all sorts of
stuff that we normally would have likely gotten to on
a daylight today, and it just obliterated by the fact
(02:16:18):
that Laramie Tunsel left tackle of six years here in Houston.
Laramie Tunsel is now a Washington commander. And you know,
going back to what Wex was saying about he is,
I think they'll have him for two more years. That's
when his contracts up. At least he's thirty one. Given
(02:16:41):
his age, given his durability, I mean, he's never really
had like major injury concerns, especially here in Houston. You know,
Wex said, this might not even be the this his
next extension, might not even be his last. It's actually
incredible when you think about offensive linemen and what their
(02:17:03):
job is in the sport that that job comes in,
and how durable and how long lasting those careers can be.
Not everybody, but listen, you're thinking about. Your job is
to basically keep some of the most amazing physical specimens,
freaks of nature, honestly, from getting to your store star
(02:17:26):
quarterback over and over and over again during an afternoon,
and then the next week, and then the next week,
and then the next year, and then the next year
after that, in the next decade. And some of these
guys play like near twenty years in the NFL, and
it's just it's insane that they last as long as
they do in a sport where, for example, the guy
(02:17:48):
that is running behind you that you block four has
a shelf life on average of three and a half years.
But you know, some of the great oilers linemen, and
and you know, once once you've gotten to like Laramie
Tunseel's thirty one year mark, and you're still going strong
and you've got a lot left ahead of you, you know,
(02:18:09):
he's probably gonna be one of those guys. And it's
just incredible to me that some of these guys can
play as much as fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, close to twenty
seasons doing what they do at the size they do it.
You know, it's not easy on your joints. You always
see these guys that retire as an offensive lineman and
then you see them in person, like a year later,
(02:18:30):
and they're like half the size they used to be.
You know the uh I mean, I saw what was
it the first time I saw Jeff Saturday on television
after he retired from the Colts. You know, Steve McKinney
from the original Texans offensive line and just on and
on and on running into Chester Pits every now and again,
and you see, you know, you remember what he looked
(02:18:52):
like when he played Sick's crazy it. You know, like
Dwayne Brown, longtime left tackle the for the Texans, It'll
be the same thing with him.
Speaker 3 (02:19:00):
I can almost guarantee it. That guy's gonna lose a
ton of weight.
Speaker 2 (02:19:04):
So for Laramie Tuns a little for the chapter of
his career to now be over here in Houston is
pretty incredible all things considered, especially when it comes, and
especially not just when it comes in his individual lifespan
at thirty one, but when it did the season that
it's coming after the fact that you're like, well, offensive
(02:19:26):
line ain't great, but at least you got left tackle covered.
And again, I go back and forth on this, because
I was as critical as anybody of Laramie Tunzel. I
did tend to think that he just didn't get after
it the way I would have liked.
Speaker 5 (02:19:42):
You know.
Speaker 2 (02:19:42):
Cecil Shortz went on Fox with Will Konkle was talking
about this, that the entire line as a cohesive unit
didn't have that nastiness about them that you'd like to see.
Just got a text message a little while ago from
someone else. To be a cohesive O line, you got
(02:20:04):
to practice together and communicate and you know this veteran
rest days and you know, lackadaisical summers, all that kind
of stuff.
Speaker 3 (02:20:16):
I don't know. I don't know. Aaron Wilson saying he's
well liked in that locker room.
Speaker 2 (02:20:21):
You saw Titus Howard's posts. It's a he is one
of the most He is a giant enigma in Texans history.
There's no doubt about the talent there's no doubt about
the ability. There's no doubt about the numbers that back up,
you know, his ability to protect from us, specifically from
(02:20:43):
a pass protection standpoint, also numbers backing up that he's
not the greatest run protector run blocker, but no offensive
lineman or very few of them, I would say, I
guess are perfect. But Laramie Tunsel is about his good
of guys you've had at that position and really on
the offensive line since Dwayne Brown was in his heyday.
(02:21:05):
I can't think of anybody that came in between. And
for all the things that that Bill O'Brien did in
his tenure here as not only Texans head coach, but
then later the fake GM that he was the trade
for Laramie Tunzell. It's it's not the worst move he made.
(02:21:27):
We know what the worst move he made was, but
probably is his best personnel move that he made as
the quote GM of the Texans. When you look back
on it, it's not like there's a big long resume
and it's not like there's a lot of good moves,
so it's not exactly a high bar there. But again,
(02:21:49):
Larimy Tunzell spelled you at the left tackle position in
a league where you got to have one more often
than not, and where the Texans go from here and
what they do at that position is probablyably about as
big a question that has to be answered moving forward
as anything else. And you didn't think you were going
to be answering that question as recently as twelve hours ago,
(02:22:13):
let alone twenty four hours ago. And as this kind
of settles and we see what happens in the draft,
and you know, free agency still has yet to be
all completely dolled out, but a lot of guys are
already off the market, and like I said, left tackles
that are as effective and efficient at times as Laramie
Tonsel was don't grow on trees. And here I am
(02:22:34):
sitting in the same chair where I criticized the guy
week after week after week for the penalties and just
the overall I thought lack of intensity. I would have liked,
we'll find out. We'll find out real quick and specifically
CJ will find out. And maybe I was in the
minority thinking I'd probably run that by my franchise quarterback.
(02:22:56):
I you know, Tom Brady didn't know about things. Pat
Mahomes didn't. I don't know, I'm just saying how I
would do it. I'm not running an NFL franchise.
Speaker 5 (02:23:05):
Though.
Speaker 2 (02:23:06):
We will continue to talk about this topic tomorrow and
so much more when we revisit you guys on the A.
Speaker 1 (02:23:11):
Team, the A Team on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (02:23:18):
For a step aside for good.
Speaker 2 (02:23:19):
Here on a Monday night, I want to tell you
guys about prime Way Federal Credit Union. They know that
sometimes you get into debt, and because you have debt,
you have stress. Those are two things that they would
like to eliminate in your life. If you have been spending,
or if you did spend, maybe towards the holidays and
it's March and you're like, I'm still in debt because
these credit cards and the interest that piles on is
(02:23:41):
not allowing me to get a debt. Well, prime Way
Federal Credit Union is the place to go because they're
all about giving you solutions to your financial problems. And
so if you're in debt for whatever reason, and however
big or small that debt is, don't let high interest
rates keep you drowning in even more debt. Consolidate that
debt into one low monthly payment and with low introductory
rate you'll be able to see a future where you
(02:24:02):
are debt free.
Speaker 3 (02:24:03):
Eliminate that stress I was talking about.
Speaker 2 (02:24:05):
