Speaker 1 (00:00):
One thing that I think is kind of interesting as
we bark on this college football playoff is I wasn't
expecting this, and I doubt I don't know how many
folks saw this in advance and started a howl about
it in advance. But Sark was asked about this, Daboshweeney

(00:26):
talked about it in his press conference, and apparently Rhet
Lashley went off on it as well. And that is
the portal window opening up during the playoff.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Today.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
At his news conference, Lastly, the SMU coach suggested that
they eliminate the December portal window, saying it's tough that
players have to make decisions about whether the transfer or
play in the playoff. Lastly said having an open portal
window while preparing for postseason games is terrible, while also
noting the decision that Penn State's backup quarterback Bo Prebula

(01:07):
made the decision to enter the portal. And I heard
James Franklin, the Penn State head coach, talking about that,
saying I know this. He said Bo did not want
to leave the program, but he felt like he didn't
have a choice because if he didn't go into the portal,
his opportunity to land somewhere else would escape him, so

(01:31):
you can't really fault him for that.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
And in fact, somebody else said the same thing.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Oh it was Jeff Traylor and UTSA at his news conference,
he said, don't fault the kids, faulty faulty adults, he said,
with this system, not just that, but he was also
referring to nil and the way it was going. But
we heard start talk about it yesterday saying maybe they
should look at an NFL model. Maybe maybe you don't

(01:56):
have a portal window open there and you don't know
it until the spring semester starts.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
And he said he understands and I get it as well.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Why it's important for a lot of programs to have
access to an open portal window during the month of
December because of spring practice. But as starting point out,
there is a gap. You could, you know, open it
in January. But a lot of the guys feel like
they've got to get student athletes on campus enrolled by

(02:28):
early by mid January or something like that, never mind
that spring practice might not start until March or February
in some cases April. They got to get him enrolled
and got him and get him in class. So that's
that's a tough deal to go through.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
And don't forget about the student athlete part of this,
because certain universities require you be enrolled into your classes,
have your class schedule, and a lot of that has
to be done by early January Craig. So if you wait, well,
let's just wait until the title game ends. That's January twentieth.
You're already three four weeks into your spring semester there,
so people forget that the student is still a part

(03:03):
of student athlete, even though we do forget about it.
And there's a reason why we have this portal right
now is so these students can enroll into their next
university and get on campus and get into class because
otherwise now you're waiting until the next fall to be
able to start taking classes. So what do you do
for the entire spring semester? You're still going to school

(03:23):
while you're not in the football team. And I know
Silas Bolden at Oregon State, but he was trying to
finish his degree, I think. So it's something that the
NCAA needs to figure out with the portal in these
universities as well.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Yeah, here are a couple other comments from lashly quote,
I feel so awful for our kids and kids around
the country. There's no other sport at all that has
free agency in the season. Remember Sart talked about that.
He said, also, there's free agency going on. It's sad,
it's terrible. You hear the story about their backup quarterback
saying I don't have a choice. He said, that's wrong,

(03:57):
that's unacceptable, that's not okay. He shouldn't have to make
that decision. He's got a situation like that. Remember, Kevin
Jennings was not SMU starting quarterback at the start of
the year. He quarterbacked them in their American Conference championship
win over Toulane last year, but it was still up
in the air whether it was going to be him

(04:17):
or Preston Stone at quarterback. Well Stone got hurt and
then Jennings got a stranglehold on the position and didn't
let up. He played extremely well, so Stone lost the
starting job in week three. The unique and interesting thing
about that he has chosen to stay with the Mustangs

(04:39):
during the playoff run. But Lastly said quote, we're working
with him, but it's still a juggling act. So the
window opened a week ago December ninth little over week
eight days ago, and it closes three days after Christmas,
although players whose teams made it to the college football
playoff do have a five day window to enter a

(05:00):
starting the day after their season ends. Now that's really
interesting too when you think about this. Let's say that
Texas goes all the way to the National Championship game
and then win or lose, they're playing on January twentieth.
So at that point, is there indeed a five day
window open for players like some of the defensive ends

(05:23):
who've talked about apparently so well, if it can work
for them, why couldn't you do it there?

Speaker 2 (05:28):
I mean, do you need nineteen days with the portal?

Speaker 1 (05:32):
And for those who get five days afterwards, maybe there's
that trial of where you can look at the stuff,
But schools can't make a decision on it until five
days after the final college football game is played or something.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
And that's the other thing that last week said interesting quotes.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
Here here's his quote.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
The real easy thing is you don't have a transfer
portal in That's the real easy answer, and it solves
all the problems. Why in the world would we put
kids in a position where they've got to decide do
I transfer or play in the playoff? Do I transfer
or play in my bowl game? Scholastically, it doesn't make
sense either because your year's end in May, not in December.

(06:18):
So he said, college football has to take another look
at the calendar. That's exactly what sarcer was talking about
and what now Bosweeney was talking about the calendar.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
And that's part of the word that I have heard.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
And I'll give you you guys a little bit of
a little sneak peek.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
So to speak.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
Cameron does a fabulous job of producing our broadcast open
for each Texas Long Horn football game during the year.
We have already produced what the open will be for
Saturday's game, and in it you hear me talk about
us that I use the word different. And in the

(07:00):
opposing coach feature with Dabosweeney you hear him talk about different.
Sark yesterday said different. That is the most operative word
about this college football player. For these teams, especially the
ones that are playing this week, the ones who got
the buys, it's more like just getting ready for regular
bowl game. You're just going to have more add ons

(07:21):
beyond that. But you know that's the whole thing is different.
Everything is different about it, and that's just accented the
whole thing about the portal more. He said, people are
bombarding our roster, trying to pick people off of our roster,
and we're trying to focus on the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
So yeah, it's really easy.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
Don't have a transfer portal in the summer, go to
the spring, and lastly said if that were to happen,
they should also consider moving more toward an NFL model,
which we heard from Sark yesterday when it comes to
spring practices, which would begin after the portal closes, like
OTAs in the NFL. So now we're hearing more and
more talk about that, so it'd be interesting to see

(08:00):
if that's the way we go with that.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
He said.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
We coaches have been saying this for the last three
or four years with all these changes, and what happens
is we just make all these random changes because we
don't want to get sued or we don't want to
do this, We don't want to do that. We don't
think about the long term effects that has on the
young people that we're supposed to be serving. Okay, I
agree with them on all that. I think we should
also be realistic to know and understand and realize that

(08:29):
with change is going to come some unintended consequences. The
change being the twelve teams in the playoff. Everybody likes it,
it's pretty cool, but there were going to be some
slings and arrows that came out of it, and those
are things that will have to be adjusted, and I
think they probably will be adjusted. But you know, for now,

(08:52):
teams like Texas and Clemson and SMU and Penn State
are seeing the effects of this. All right, We'll be
back to wrap up today's edition of the program, continuing
here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and
the iHeartRadio app.
