Speaker 1 (00:00):
Rolling with South Carolina artists. And this course is James Brown,
the Boss. And now we welcome in the Boss, Craig Way,
who does join us live from Joyrwold up.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Craig, Yeah, not from South Carolina, joining you from Arlington
in the Founders Club, where we were when we visited
a couple of days ago as they wrap up the
four eight Division two championship game between Carthage and Levega.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
But yeah, it's good to be back on again. Man.
It's day number.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Three of the UIL State High School Football Championships.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Yeah, yesterday a shocker between Columbus and Malakoff forty eight
to fourteen. And then you mentioned, of course that the
triple overtime game earlier between Ganado and Stamford, and then
we saw Gunter shut out wood Fill twenty eight. Nothing
take us through those games yesterday?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Well, I think so far to this point, Cam, everything
has gone according to plan, going all the way back
to Wenday. I stay courting the plant, going the way
that both Greg Tepper and Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine
and myself thought it might. We thought the two six
man games would be forty five point Mercy rules that's
exactly what they were with Jaydon winning over Oakwood in

(01:06):
the first game fifty four to eight. And so because
of the forty five point mercy rule, which says, if
you're up by forty five points or more at halftime
or any point in the second half, this is for
six man football only, but if those parameters come to play,
then the game is over. So it was over at
halftime on the first game. The second game, Gordon was
up on White Face sixty four to twenty fourth a half,
they're up forty, and we thought the game might get

(01:29):
into the second half, but that it wouldn't last long.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
And that's exactly what happened.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Her producer assets at half time since Gordon was going
to get the football first, needing only a touchdown to
end the game. On the mercy rule, do you how
many plays you think it'll take? And Granger Huntress, who
was my analyst on the telecast and the six man guru,
said one play, Well, if you don't count the second
half kickoff, it was. He was exactly right, because if
White Face tried an onside kick, they didn't recover. And

(01:53):
then on the very next play, Gordon went for a
forty five yard touchdown. Ry Reid did red is a
lot like you know, we were talking about Grayson Rigden
and making the transition from six man football to eleven
man football for Columbus, Ry Reid may well do the same.
He's a junior great player at Gordon High School and
he already is a scholarship offer on the table from

(02:14):
North Texas, so we may see that. And he was
the outstanding defensive player and the outstanding offensive player, or
the other way around. Striker Reid was the outstanding offensive
player and he was the outstanding defensive player the two cousins.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
So it's.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
All of that had gone according to plan. The night
game between Munster and Shiner, which we kind of referred
to as the Beer Geese Bowl, went down to the
final minute, Munster scoring with forty seconds to go to
win thirty six to twenty nine. And then the first
game yesterday, what a marvelous game. A friend, Mike Leslie
from WFA Channel eight up here in Dallas had the
call on that as he worked with Isaiah Stamback of

(02:54):
the Cowboys SilverStar Network coverage, and that was a great game.
It went triple overtime, Gnado winning its first eight title
as they won thirty to twenty eight. They were able
to get a two point conversion and then and then
intercept a path in the end zone from Stamford to
win it. So Ganada wins its first Ay title. Gunter

(03:14):
followed in the second they made it a three peat.
We thought they'd probably handle Woodville. They just methodically pulled away.
It was only seven to nothing at half, they pulled away.
They won twenty eight to nothing. And then the night game,
like you said, that was the shocker in terms of
the margin. It was number one Malakoff, who was the
defending state champs, unbeaten against Columbus who had lost one time.

(03:35):
But Columbus so explosive, and we thought that Columbus probably
had an edge. And so Columbus goes right down the
field and scores. And so they go down the field
and score, and then Malakoff goes down the field and scored.
With thought, okay, buckle up, it's gonna be a great game.
Malakoff didn't score again until there was a minute to
go in the ballgame. Columbus dominated the game. They won

(03:55):
forty eight fourteen. It was a night for the showbl
Family head coach Matt Shobel, who had played at TCU
and in the NFL, the head coach. His assistant coach
there at Columbus is Aaron Shoble, who also played at TCU,
who also played in the NFL, and their.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
Two sons factored in.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Adam Shobel was the offensive MVP, their outstanding quarterback who's
headed for TCU, and John Shobel, his cousin, was the
defensive MVP. They both had great games. Grayson Rigged in
the chorus, the six man transfer, had an outstanding game.
He scored four touchdowns, went over two thousand rushing yards
for the season. He did injure his knee in the

(04:34):
fourth quarter and came out of the ball game. We
talked to him after the game and said, how's the knee,
and he said, it hurts, but I'm gonna be okay.
Remember he's going to Wyoming on a scholarship. So that's
how it's gone. The first one in Carthage slowly pulling
away from a tough Lavega team in the fourth quarter
here of the four eight Division two contest.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
So how many in a row is that for Carthage?

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Now not so much in a row, because they didn't
win last year film were penough. But it's ten state
titles and all ten under Scott Sarrat. Carthage has never
lost a state championship game.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
That's the thing that's that's interesting.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Alito has the most titles with twelve, but that split
up between three coaches. Tim mccannon with most of them,
Steve Wood with a title, Robbie Jones with a title.
This guy Scott Sarrat, who by the way, is married
to Barry Switzer's daughter.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Interesting story.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
There ten rings, and there's this great story about how
he keeps all of his state championship rings in a.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
Sack like a Walmart sack or something.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Isn't it doesn't display him or anything like that, but
he is. He's quite the head coach and he is
and he's turned down bigger jobs along the way. The
community is so involved with the program and so intertwined
with the team, and he's had the same staff, so
the school board and everybody both they keep those guys
happy and they keep them i think four to fied

(05:57):
enough at their salaries and things like that, and so
they the thing running.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
And that's one of the things.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
That makes Carthage as tough as they do, although they
have some very talented athletes as well.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
That's an impressive feat already, but to be able to
do it in the twenty first century, I think is
even more impressive, especially with how big the game of
a high school football has gotten up the six classes. Now, okay,
two more games today, Craig Selena first Killed four A
Division one at three o'clock and then the five eight
Division two game at seven South O'll click versus Richmond Randall.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Yeah, the first game that comes up here in a
little while between. Salina the number one team in the state,
undefeated and they've been number one pretty much the entire season,
and they're playing a kill Gore team that beat Carthage
by the way first game of the year.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
But they've had their ups and downs.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
They've lost a couple of ball games, and there's times
when they look really really good and they have great athletes,
and then there's times when they do things just slip
off the table a little bit. But if they're on
their game, they make it tough. Solina is like a machine,
a lot of precision, very much. It's like Carthage in
that respect. And if if if you see Kilgore able

(07:06):
to stay away from the stakes and turnovers, It's gonna
be a really good game.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
Otherwise I think Solana could wind up winning it.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
Obviously, Tomorrow he will be at dk RS Texas takes
on Clemson. But three really good games starting off with
Highland Park for Smithson Valley in eleven to five A
Division one, and then the two local Austin teams at
three o'clock six A Division two South Lake Carroll against
Vandergriff and then seven o'clock six A Division one North
Crowley Firsus Austin Westlake. What do you think about these

(07:33):
three matchups tomorrow?

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Craig Well, and I didn't want to sell tonight's game short.
I failed to mention that Richman Ranstafocliff five A Division two.
I think it's gonna be a throwdown that thing. Two
teams very well coached, very athletic, and.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Kind of mean.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
It could it could really be something physical to watch
tonight now tomorrow. I think Tepper put it best when
he talked ab Highland Park at Smithson Valley. He said,
if you like blocking and tacking, you're gonna love this
because it is precision football, hard hitting defenses I could
see a twenty one to fourteen ball game either way.

(08:09):
I think both ball clubs are really good. And then
you mentioned the two area schools. Obviously, Vandergriff I think
has a really good chance. Does Vandergriff to win the
state title? Now they're playing South Lake. Carrol's used to
be in there. Carroll's won eight state championships, but they've
lost both of the running backs. They've had to find
other ways to do it. Vandergriff has been very well balanced.

(08:32):
I think this thing is almost a toss up. I
like Vandergriff. And then the game tomorrow night, Westlake and
North Crowley, I think it is a toss up. North
Crowley again with great athletes, but this is a team
that's much like the North Shore team that Tony Salas
are schemed up as well as anybody, and I've had
several coaches tell me that this week, and Tepper and

(08:54):
I were talking about as well. That was about as
solid and as spectacular a defensive game plan as any
of us have ever seen. What Westlake did defensively to
Galena Park North Shore last week. They're gonna need to
have a similar type not only plan, but also execution.
And Reecee Wise played really well last week on the
offensive side of quarterback for Westlake. If he has another

(09:15):
game like that, they've got a shot to win it
as well.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
It should be a lot of fun. Of course, you
can watch all the games on the fan Duel Sports Network. Okay,
last night, Craig, you're busy, but Jordan Pope forty two
points a Moody Center record, a career high for Jordan
Pope and fantastic performance and did it without Trey Johnson.
And of course the night before, Craig, you're on the
call on Sunday against Arkansas Pie and Bluff, we saw

(09:39):
Nick Cody had twenty points. We're seeing a lot of
guys now step up and we're seeing the death of
this Texas basketball team.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
Yeah, and I had it on my laptop while I
was calling the gig last night.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
On it you know I'm gonna be doing that.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Listening to Roger and Eddie Horn.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Yeah, yeah, the game as well, New Orleans game notes
Eddie orn h O R A N. But you know,
it was one of those things where we've we talked
to Jordan Pope in one of those preseason shows out
at Pluckers and the guy was a score when he

(10:16):
was at Oregon State, so we've been waiting to see
him and it's been slowly opening up for him, and
then it exploded. Obviously last night you mentioned they were
holding out Trey Johnson precautionarily. He gets even more rest now,
can get all the way to the twenty ninth before
they play another game, so that that sore hip feels
a lot better and I think he'll be fine. But

(10:37):
in Jordan Pope and some of those other guys, we
see what they can do offensively, and that was pretty
impressive to see.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Yeah, I think if it was a must winning game,
I think we would have seen both Trey Johnson and
Jason kenn out there. They both went through pregame warm ups,
they both were moving fine, they both looked happy. But
of course, going into SEC play, we know how physical
it's going to be. In the beginning of the schedule
for Texas basketball is super tough, starting off with Texas
A and M.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Yeah, absolutely, and so you want to get as many
reps and as many guys into as many combinations as
Rodney Terry and the staff want to see before they
open conference play in College Station on the fourth all
of that's really important.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
So you want to get as comfortable as you.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
Can with your guys out there before you take the
floor there at Rid Arena.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
Tomorrow, Texas Clemson in the second college football playoff game
for the Long Gordons. And you, of course you've been
able to call the first one and now the second one,
but the first time ever hosting a college football game
on site in the first round of college football playoff.
I'm sure you and Roger and Will Matthews are absolutely
stoked for this game tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
Yeah, And I've been talking about this during the course
of the week, and I think I did an interview
with some folks on Serious XM about it, and they
asked me about the playoff games being at home and
how did I think it would roll out, And I said, well,
in Austin, it all roll out just fine, and the
games is sellout. Temperature will be in the low of
the mid sixties anywhere from whatever sixty two to sixty
five grees Sonny. Gonna be great conditions for football. But also,

(12:04):
when you think about it, the four locations where they
have on campus games, Yeah, you can pick out some
other ones that are probably just as tradition Layden and
historic places like Alabama or Nebraska or some of the
other places of Michigan the Big House, but in the Horseshoe,

(12:25):
in Columbus, Happy Valley, at Penn State Touchdown Jesus at
Notre Dame, and then of course at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium.
It's hard to imagine too many more venues that are
equally as traditioned. Layden to host the first time ever
that they've had playoff games on campus sites, it's a
pretty good deal and I think we're all looking forward

(12:46):
to it.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
Yeah, I'm super excited to Bill a visit with you
and Roger tomorrow on Long Corms game there. Of course,
recovers begins at two o'clock with the Long corn Raio
Network game. Okay, last question for you, Craig. Last night,
something happened for the first time in the NFL, I
believe since the seventies, the rare fair catch kick from
Cameron Dicker a fifty seven yarder. I did not know

(13:09):
this was a rule. I'm sure you did. It took
me about ten minutes and a couple of YouTube videos
to understand what was happening last night, But how about
Cameron Dicker the fifty seven yard field goald off the
rare fair catch kick. Is Los Angeles able to come
back and win the game on Thursday Night football?

Speaker 2 (13:25):
Yeah, it's a rule, and it's been around obviously a
long long time. And I will tell you the first
time I really became aware of it, believe it or not,
it was in a playoff game between the Cowboys and
the Rams. And this goes back to be nineteen eighty
five when Eric Dickerson had a great year and the
Rams shut out the Cowboys that day in Anaheim. That

(13:48):
when they were playing their home games there in Anaheim,
they beat them twenty to nothing. There was a deal
just like that, and I think it was right at
the end of the first half where a fair catch. Now,
it wasn't a deal with the inner few pearance of
a fair catch as we saw. It was a legitimate
fair catch that the Cowboys signal for caught it. Tom
Landery knew about the rule. They tried it but missed it,

(14:09):
missed the field goal there. So, like you said, it
hadn't happened since the seventies. But that goes back cam
to things like the drop kicks, that are legal, you
can drop kick a field goal or an extra point,
and that's a lost art in football. And this is
another one of those obscure rules that if you fair

(14:29):
catch it anywhere on the field, you can free kick
a field goal with no rush from the opponent. Now,
the reason why it isn't really done much is because
most punts you wind up going well on the other
side of midfield, and so you wouldn't realistically try it.
Maybe at the end of a half or end of
a game, but most of them are going to be

(14:51):
deep enough to where it's unrealistic to try.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
A field goal of that distance.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
It was interesting hearing Jim Harball talk about saying it's
his favorite rule and he's done it before and wanted
to do it again. His favorite rule, but the circumstances
have to be right, and the circumstances were right because
of the kick catch interference and the penalty yardage that
then gave Cameron Dicker an opportunity to knock one down
from fifty seven yards, So that all the circumstances have

(15:21):
to work out to make it work, and it did
for the Chargers last time in the game they really
needed to win. Now, if the Coltson Dolphins lose over
the weekend, then the Chargers clinch the playoffs. Right, And
I'll leave you with this can when I get back
in the studio on Monday, you're gonna like this. I
was digging through my backpack because I was looking for

(15:44):
a credential and I found the credential.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
But I was digging through my backpack. The other thing
I found.

Speaker 2 (15:49):
In my backpack, written down on an envelope are predictions
for the year. Who was going to be, who was
going to win the division since and who we're gonna
be the wild cards and the conference champions and the
super Bowl champion.

Speaker 3 (16:05):
So you're you're you're gonna have a laugh. I'm gonna
have a laugh too.

Speaker 2 (16:09):
I don't know if you remember them, but uh, a
couple of moer you're gonna go, I really made that
pick and I did.

Speaker 3 (16:17):
The same thing. Yeah. So that's then.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
And we made some picks that look good right now,
look really good. But there were some that we went
you look at now and go, wow, I actually picked that.

Speaker 3 (16:29):
So, uh, that will be coming Monday.

Speaker 2 (16:30):
We're gonna do that, uh, you know, when our our
final show before the holiday, since we're off Christmas, even
Christmas Day, so we're gonna do that on Monday.

Speaker 1 (16:39):
There's two teams I know, I picked one in each
conference and both have had their head coach fired middle
of season, so I went, hope I won't spoil it,
but I'm sure listeners can figure it out. Hey, Craig,
thanks so much for stopping by. Let me know if
you buy that eighty dollars yeaty tumbler at Jerry Roll
with the Cowboys, big d on it and I look

(16:59):
for or there talking to you and Roger the Marrow
down a DKR.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
I don't think I'd even spend eighty dollars on a
Dodger tumblrt oh. I already have a Dodger tumbler at
home now think about it, So yeah, I wouldn't need
doing that.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
All right, Greig, we'll talk to you tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Thanks. Take care.

Speaker 1 (17:13):
Of course, you can watch the Texas High school football
state Championships on the FanDuel Sports Network again. Carthage and
Wakel Lavega wrapping up, but two more games in action
today up at Gerald Selena, first Kilgore at three, and
then South Oak Cliff and Richmond Randall tomorrow or tonight
at seven we'll be back with Inconceivable and a special one.

(17:34):
It's Friday. That means we go to the more flasks
of the lower forty eight states. It's a Florida Man Friday.
