Speaker 1 (00:05):
He's a Texas legend, a Hall of Fame broadcaster, the
voice of the Texas Longhorns, and your host of the
Craigway Show.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Here he is now craig.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Way Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred of the Zone Andrews

(00:39):
and we'll hang out with you this Monday afternoon. After
a ginormous win for the Texas women's basketball team, put
it on the board, sixty five forty eight win against
the Illinois Fighting.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
And Orange Illy Illinis.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Either way, Longhorns women move on to the Sweet sixteen,
and Craig Way had that final game call.

Speaker 4 (01:06):
This is what it sounded like.

Speaker 5 (01:08):
For the fourth time in his five seasons as head coach,
Vick Chafer will take the Texas women's basketball team.

Speaker 4 (01:16):
To the Sweet sixteen.

Speaker 5 (01:18):
Final score this afternoon here in Austin, the Texas Longhorns
sixty five the Illinois Fighting ALAINI forty eight. Next up,
burning up Aham, Alabama and matchup number two with the
Tennessee Lady Balls as Texas wins its thirty third game
of the season to advance to the Sweet sixteen.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
And in that win, Madison Booker twenty points nine of eighteen,
shooting six rebounds, one assist, two steals in the win,
and the Longhorns they went on a game of runs. Obviously,
when you talk about basketball, it's a make or miss league.
When you talk about the Texas women will they made
a lot of them in that win. Shot forty six

(02:04):
percent from the field and they didn't even need to
hit a three from downtown. The way that Vick Shaffer's
team had played in this contest, it was force turnovers,
which they did plenty of twenty turnovers by Illinois and
the Texas win and then get to the free throw
line and shoot some free throws, not of twelve for
the Longhorns this afternoon. So that is what is going

(02:27):
to come down to. That's what it came down to
today for Texas. They came in as obviously the slight
favorite against number eight seeded Illinois, and now they go
on and take on the Lady Bols, a team that
they played earlier this season. You got to feel pretty
good about where Texas is coming in to the final

(02:49):
stretch right Sweet sixteen allite eate. This is the team
that's trying to get over the hump and get to
the final four in the national Championship. When you look
at the rest of the NCAA bracket. The teams that
they have to beat are still very much still in contention.
Right We talked about that ultimate The box office trio
is what I'm calling it. The opportunity to play three

(03:11):
seeded Notre Dame, potentially one seed out of the number
two overall one seat I should say in you the
South Carolina Game Cocks, and then potentially Yukon on the
other side of the bracket. This box office trio that
I'm calling it is still very much in play for
the Texas long runs. But of course they got to

(03:32):
get past the Lady Bowls and the Sweet Sixteen first
you go through the rest of women's basketball. One other
game finished up earlier today. That's two seed and c
State taking Michigan State to the Cleaners eighty three p
forty nine win for the wolf Pack, and that's in
Region one, in the Spokane Region. Obviously other games going

(03:52):
on right now. They've staggered these games where it's one
after the other after the other out of the SEC
number three seeded Klahoma versus number six seeded Iowa. That
game just tipped off seven thirty one left in the
first quarter. Iowa leading Oklahoma eight to four. That's in
Region four in the Spokane region as well.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
Tonight.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
A lot of a men's basketball to get into. None
of those game is going to be happening during the show,
but the lineup card for tonight a couple of heavy hitters.
Number two seeded Alabama versus six seeded BYU one seed
in Florida versus four seeded Maryland. See how Maryland one
the other night, one seeded Duke versus four seeded Zona,

(04:35):
and three seeded Tech versus ten seeded Arkansas. And this
past weekend, if you were locked in on college basketball,
you were one of millions. We all were watching our
brackets kind of go up in flames. It's always after
that first couple days, that Thursday, if you can keep
it perfect, you're doing better than most. You can keep
it perfect. Going into the weekend, you feel really confident,

(04:58):
But it's always that fir, just the weekend of tournament
play that you gotta tell everybody, Hey take the kids out,
Hey take the dog out, Hey take the cleaners out,
take the garbage out. I'm not leaving this couch. I
want to watch all of these games. How they're all
gonna stack up. And it was an exciting weekend, obviously

(05:18):
for the men. Obviously an excited weekend for the men.
This this past weekend, Saint John's losing two Calipari's Arkansas
razorback team. I didn't have it in the cards. I
didn't think that that was what was gonna happen. I
had Saint John. I bought into the Big East hype.

(05:39):
I bought into the Johnnys and they disappointed me once again.
Another game that Saint john loses when they felt like
the better team. I went through the records, I went
through the shooting for Saint John's this season in the
Red Storm as a team, nine percent from downtown, twenty

(06:01):
eight percent from the field. And there's teams that are
obviously built for March, and there's teams that just aren't
ready for that spotlight. And you know, you like Patino,
you like what he's been able to do. He feels
like the godfather of college basketball in a lot of ways.
But in a game like that, you gotta find a
way to either call timeouts, get your guys back under control,

(06:24):
let them potentially, you know, get their legs back underneath them,
and then stop shooting.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
The three.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
It seems like everybody wants to be this three point
shooting team. They want to go out of their way
to be a team if they're not really like and
Saint John's fell into that trap on Saturday. They wanted
to be this team that got out, that scored the
shot threes, and it just did not work out for
Saint john in that one. But the sneaky thing, and

(06:52):
I think the thing that people aren't going to be
talking about going into this Thursday slate of games is
how bad Arkansas was from downtown as well, two of
nineteen shooting ten percent. Again, if Arkansas wasn't able to
dominate the glass the way that they were getting forty
five rebounds, if they weren't able to play defense the
way that they were forcing six turnovers and get to

(07:14):
the rim against Saint John's, this is a different story.
It was a game that now where it's in the
rearview mirror, I don't see Arkansas moving much further. I
don't see this team getting to an elite EID or
a Final four because of their lack of shooting, because
of the fact that they haven't looked great from downtown.

(07:37):
Now Texas Tech obviously has their work cutout for him.
Sweet sixteen team. They are a team I think when
we made the brackets earlier last week, I was talking
to Ishmael Johnson from Dave Campbell's, who does a really
good job on the college basketball podcast over there. We
were talking about what's the most likely team out of
the state of Texas to make a run. Houston was
the one that everybody circled. Baylor was a potential upset

(08:01):
and an upset team, and Texas Tech was a team
that we both kind of agreed on that we're warm on,
we're not hot on. We like them, we don't love them.
And Tech against Arkansas, I'm taking the Red Raiders in
that matchup. Other news, obviously, the Longhorns securing their next
head coach, Sean Miller after Xavier loses this past weekend.

(08:23):
Jerry still out. I'm gonna I'm gonna hold out. I'm
gonna I'm gonna hold out my thoughts and my opinions
on this highre for a little bit longer. I know
a lot of people are jumping on it, They're very excited. Clearly,
I'm gonna hold out. I'm gonna get wait to see
what that introductory press conference looks like I'm gonna wait
to see what that recruiting class looks like before I

(08:45):
pick my side one way or the other. I will
say this though, Roddy Terry leaving with a lot of grace.
Love to see the way that his final press release
will get into that a little bit later in the show.
I love to see the reaction from fans as well
as he exits stage left. Dream job, got to coach
his dream school. Love to see that. When we come
back more from the Texas women's win, a sixty five

(09:09):
to forty eight win against number eight ceed Illinois. We'll
try to get you some of that postgame audio as
well as play your post game with Craig Way and
Vic Shaffer.

Speaker 4 (09:18):
All that coming up next.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
Craigway Show continues Andrew Zimmill sitting in for Craig on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Hopefully you guys
had an excellent weekend. A lot of college basketball happening
over the weekend. How many brackets are left perfect? I
think I saw this in the morning was one. I
think I saw one bracket according to ESPN, was still

(09:41):
perfect throughout all of this, which is kind of crazy
to think about that.

Speaker 4 (09:45):
There's millions of us every year.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
Who put it all together, who try to, you know,
come up with the perfect bracket. We spend time watching
college basketball all year, putting it all together, and still
can't get close to a perfect bracket. Can't get close
even having what half of a day on Thursday close
enough to a perfect bracket. A lot to get into, obviously.

(10:10):
In this hour two of The Craig Way Show, Texas
women win their matchup against Illinois earlier today in what
was relatively a one sided game, especially considering the second
half sixty five forty eight win for the women.

Speaker 4 (10:27):
Leading scorer, for you.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
Was Madison Booker with twenty points, nine of eighteen shooting
from the four, six rebounds, two steals, one assists. That's
why she is the SEC Player of the Year. Taylor
Jones twelve points in the win with five or five rebounds,
and Rory Harmon to four steals in the win with
seven assists played very well for the Texas women well.

Speaker 4 (10:52):
Obviously.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
The big games coming out of the weekend for college
basketball the forty Acres was the signing the made official
Xavier's head coach Sean Miller reaching an agreement to be
the next head coach of the Texas Longhorns. Now Miller
was a veteran head coach who led teams to thirteen
NCAA Tournament appearances in his career, including two of the
past three years at Xavier. He's won four hundred and

(11:14):
eighty seven games, a winning percentage above seventy one percent. Quote.
Sean played a key role in getting the Musk Year
basketball back on track. Xavor eighty great Christopher said in
a statement.

Speaker 6 (11:26):
Quote.

Speaker 3 (11:27):
He guided our program through a rapidly evolving college basketball
landscape and is a great partner in the process. We're
grateful for everything Sean has done for Xavier basketball over
the past three seasons. Now Roddy Terry was let go
and form Sunday We now return. Terry had taken over

(11:47):
on an interim basis for Chris Beard after the suspension
in twenty twenty two. He got the official job after
a twenty twenty three Elite eight appearance. He got long
Horns through the NCAA Tournament in each of the past
two seasons Xavier heedd Texas obviously in the first four
Texas was able to hold on. I got a thirteen
point lead at one point before it was erased by

(12:08):
the Musketeers. Yeah, so big for the University of Texas, obviously,
finding their guy. You hope that this is the coach
moving forward. You hope that this is the right move
for the Longhorse moving forward.

Speaker 4 (12:21):
I'm still holding out judgment.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
I'm waiting for that introductory press conference to decide one
way or the other how I feel about this move,
because John Miller is a very good coach. But when
I saw the reports earlier this week or at least
this weekend after that Texas loss, the idea that was
it was gonna be big game hunting. I was expecting
a Caylee Pario. I was expecting a Rick Patino. I
was expecting a Jay Wright. I was expecting somebody with

(12:46):
like a lot of name gravitas. Sean Miller is a
very good coach, obviously, But when you consider the last
hire that happened at the University of Texas, it was
a coach that was playing in a national championship just
a couple of weeks earlier. Actually, let's be honest, a
couple of days earlier. In Jim Slosnagle for the baseball program,
so when you say to me, hey, we're going after
some big game hunting, I'm thinking to myself, Okay, well

(13:07):
we're not going to have a decision until early April
because I'm going to expect to see the national championship
coach come into Texas. But you know, like I said,
I'm excited for Sean Miller. I'm not saying that I'm not.
I'm just holding out judgment to decide one way or
the other how excited I should be. I think that's fair.
I don't think anybody would disagree with me. Update right

(13:29):
now after the first quarter, number three seeded Oklahoma leading
six seeded Iowa twenty to eleven. As that one continues
to roll on other news as we wait for the
NCAA Tournament to start their postgame press conference with the
University of Texas women, We're gonna try to bring you
that press conference as live as we can. We also

(13:51):
have Jim Slasnagle coming up later in this hour as well,
his postgame after the Longhorns win big over the weekend,
a three or two to one series win against LSU
in what was a very good, exciting weekend of baseball. LSU,
the number two team in the country currently in the rankings.

(14:14):
This is a program on the baseball side of things
that after a serious win against Mississippi State in that
seventeen game win streak to start the season that I
have pretty I'm pretty high on right now. I don't
think anybody can disagree. The next time the Longhorns will
be at home is tomorrow's six thirty first pitch against
sam Houston State against the Bearcats before going to Columbia,

(14:37):
Missouri to take on Missouri. Now, the next big one
that I have circled on my calendar is that matchup
against Texas State. Now, I understand everybody, of course, rolling
their eyes collectively here. All you're excited for the Longhorns
to take on your Bobcats, this school that you graduated from.
You're excited for that one, obviously, Zimbo, you want to
see the long Horns and Bobcats play at the dish. Yeah, No,

(15:00):
I am excited for that because I think two things
can be true. I think that this could be a
very good matchup for the Longhorns. It's the Texas State
team that's kind of turning the corner a little bit here.
They're kind of figuring out their pitching staff. It's a
Tuesday game, and when you are the Texas Longhorns, and
when you are beating the number two team in the country,
you get a target on your back. This is one

(15:20):
of the best teams in the country. So while yeah,
Tuesday night game, you shrug your shoulders whatever you'll see.
You know it'll be a fun game. It's cool to
bring on the kittie cats, but whatever, I don't care.
I'm excited for it because I know the Longhorns are
going to get the best out of not only sam
Houston State, but also Texas State. I know that they're
going to throw their number one pitcher because they want

(15:42):
to beat Texas, which means the hitters for the long
Horns they are going to see good pitching, which means
the fans that are at the Dish are going to
see a good game. That's what I'm excited for. I
don't know why anybody wouldn't be excited for sam Houston
State coming to town. I don't know why anybody wouldn't
be excited for Texas State coming to town, because that's
the type of atmosphere the Dish springs, that's the type

(16:03):
of energy the Longhorns exude.

Speaker 4 (16:07):
I'm excited for it. I'm excited for tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (16:08):
I'm excited for next Tuesday when Texas State comes down.
Then they have a little bit of a home streak
as a Georgia rolls into town as well as Houston Christian.
So going to Missouri this weekend, another home series against
Georgia the following weekend, and it'll be it'll be good.
And this Texas baseball team against LSU looked great on Sunday.

(16:30):
Right Fielder Max Blue drove in four of the six
Texas scores, highlighted by a two run shot in the
fourth and rb at triple in the sixth inning. Blues
four hundred and three foot blast, you know the tape
measure set seventy two hundred fans in fury, in a frenzy,
i should say, after they jumped out to.

Speaker 4 (16:48):
A five zero leap.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
Early run support provided more than enough for right hander
Roger Rojos and southpaw Dylan Atlantis in his first start
as a in the burnt or Rost toss a career
co long five and two thirds innings with two run
baseball punched out six batters along the way. Valantis retired
nine to the final ten LSU batters, which is nothing

(17:11):
to turn your nose up at. Hold the visitors hitless
over the final three and one third frames. The freshman
struck out five of the six Tigers he faced. And
that has really been the story of this Longhorn baseball team.
And the story of this team obviously is going to
come down to the pitching staff. And I've talked to
Roger Wallace last week. I've talked to talk to Craig

(17:32):
as well about this. The pitching staff this season seems
a lot different. The vibes feel just a lot different
this year compared it to years past. And I don't
know what that is. A lot of people are attributing
it to Max, we know, the pitching coach. I tend
to agree, but it's weird to think that one coach

(17:54):
in one specialized position, pitching can completely turn around a
pitching staff like you wouldn't think about that. That's not
something that comes to mind, I think for the casual
baseball fan. Now, obviously, the guy who is listening and
watching and intaking every single Longhorn Baseball game will tell you, yeah,

(18:15):
you know, pitching is the most important thing. And as
a former pitcher now granted, not a Longhorn pitcher, not
a big game pitcher, but as a guy who used to,
you know, watch pitchers, I can tell you it is
the most important position. That every single play begins with
that guy touching the ball. I would say that's probably

(18:35):
kind of important, right. And the pitching staff like Texas
that's built with a bunch of young guys who are
already falling into line, and a bunch of young guys
who were faced against the Mississippi State team play excellent
facing the LSU team with big bats who LSU, who've
talked to their fans, they think they're going to Omaha.
They might early number top three team early season five

(19:00):
to get back to Omaha. And I would say, if
you put the board up, who's most likely to win
the whole thing? They're in that conversation, you face that
type of hitter in your place, and you pitch as
good as this pitching staff did. Yeah, I'm gonna say
I'm gonna take Texas. I feel good about this pitching staff.

(19:24):
I feel better about this pitching staff then maybe I
have ever And that's saying something, and again that goes
credit to Jims Slashdangle the head coach and gives credit
to Max Wiener, the pitching coach. All right, when we
come back, we'll hear from Jimmer Slashdangle. We're also trying
to get you that Texas women's post game as a
head coach Vick Schaeffer and his players talk to the

(19:46):
NCAA media. Longhorn women win today, move on to the
sweet sixteen bought sixty five to forty eight win against Illinois.
We'll have more with you or more for you here
in a bit on the Craig Way Show. Andrews Im
will hanging out with you on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Andrews Im will hanging out with you this after noon.

(20:09):
And we continue to work our way into this Texas
Women's post game, where we're still waiting for the nc
double A to give us our to give us our
postgame audio as they do what they do, what they do.
All right, So we wanted to hear from head coach

(20:30):
Jim Slowsnagle as he and his crew win big this
past weekend.

Speaker 4 (20:38):
Let's hear it sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (20:46):
Okay, let's we're still getting weird feedback here. We'll try
to get it fixed for you here in a second.
It's it's one of those things where you're working in
live radio, you're trying to get everything going and you
still don't have your Jim slopsnangles sound.

Speaker 4 (21:02):
That's fine, all right, right now, let's give you an update.

Speaker 3 (21:04):
Is we got four to thirty left going into a
halftime of number three Oklahoma and number six Iowa thirty
two to twenty one. The Sooners lead the Hawk guys
in Region four Round two, as that one of those
teams trying to advance to the Sweet sixteen as well,
Texas Punch they're taking to the Sweet sixteen. Longhorns win

(21:27):
sixty five to forty eight against number eight seeded Illinois
earlier today. Leading scorer for the Longhorns was Madison Booker
twenty points, nine of eighteen shooting from the floor, oh
one from downtown, six rebounds, assist in two steals, and
she was really everywhere on the court this afternoon, just

(21:49):
doing everything that you wanted the SEC player of the
Year to do, which is, you know, one of those
things that as we talked throughout the season, this is
one of the best players in college basketball. This is
the best player in the SEC, and I continue to
not hear her name or the Longhorn's name nearly enough

(22:12):
for the national conversation. I'm looking, I'm listening, I'm reading,
and I cannot find anybody who's picking Texas to move
on past the final four. In fact, I've seen a
lot of Notre Dame coming out of the Birmingham region,
the Region two or Region three out of Birmingham. I
haven't seen a lot of Texas, which concerns me. I

(22:35):
don't understand what the disrespect is coming from, because, look,
Vick Shafer is a coach who's cut down plenty of nets,
and he's gotten this Longhorn team to a spot here
that you feel very comfortable putting a lot of eggs
in the basket. You feel very comfortable putting a lot
of support and a lot of.

Speaker 4 (22:57):
You know, just a lot.

Speaker 3 (22:58):
You feel very comfortable putting respect on the Texas women
going forward, and I don't understand why we're not seeing
more of that from the national media. And I always
credited to living in a burnt orange bubble. I always
say that that might be part of my problem, is
that because I'm living where I'm living in the area
that I'm living in that that is the reason I'm

(23:21):
not seeing more of it that you know, it's the
old school, build a chip on the shoulder type of thing.
Like I'm more Are we actually being disrespected or is
it just me? Is it a perceived disrespect or is
an actual disrespect? So speaking of disrespect, speaking of a
disrespect to the sport, I've been standing on, shouting from

(23:43):
the hilltops the mountaintops to anybody who would listen that
Baseball deciding to go across the pond, decided to go
to Japan to start Opening Day, did not feel like
the right thing for the fans, pe only the right
thing from Ajor League Baseball. They made a lot of
money off of it felt like the very best thing
for Major League Baseball because they're going and taking the

(24:05):
biggest star of the sports show, Heatani back to his
home market, Tokyo, Japan, and they're gonna fill out the
Tokyo Dome. They're gonna absolutely kill with the domestic media there.
I think I heard Jeff Passing from ESPN say that
was twenty five million people watched the first two games
with the Cubs and Dodgers. Now the Dodgers won both games.

(24:27):
They're supremely talented, they're the favorite to win the whole thing.
But I was disrespected as a fan of the sport
because I'm having to wake up at five am to
try to watch Yotani play baseball. And that's not right
for the local fans. That's not right for the domestic
American fan to have to wake up that early to

(24:48):
watch the sport. I understand soccer fans having to do it.
Those games kickoff in Liverpool, the kickoff in you know, Madrid.
For the international soccer fan in your life, they're waking
up early every Saturday morning to watch their games across
the pond. But those aren't American teams. You're watching Premier

(25:08):
League soccer, You're watching Laaliga soccer. That's their sport, that's
europe sport. You're waking up, you're coming to their house
to watch their sport. We're sending America's pastime to Japan
and making American fans wake up to watch Opening Day
because you know, Opening Day for Major League Baseball is still
a couple days away. Domestically, we don't have games for

(25:31):
a couple more weeks. But for the standings. The LA
Dodgers have two wins. It didn't feel right. I felt disrespected.
And the other part about being disrespected is Mookie Betts's intestines.
Because the Dodger shortstop Mookie Bets is still dealing with
an illness, his return remains uncertain. Mookie missed the first

(25:53):
two games of the regular season in the Tokyo Dome.
Last week was set back to LA to continue to
rec he didn't play in the exhibition game against the
A's or the Angels. I'm sorry, which is you know
you're playing two regular season games and now the exhibition
game you're not gonna play.

Speaker 6 (26:09):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (26:10):
BET's told reporters that he still hasn't been able to
keep down solid food without vomiting for two weeks and
has lost fifteen pounds. He says, man, I feel great,
BET's told reports in LA, like, my body feels great.

Speaker 4 (26:22):
I've been able to work out.

Speaker 3 (26:22):
I've been able to do plenty of everything else but eat,
so the symptoms have kind of gone away. I just
have to figure out how to get my stomach to
calm down. I'm curious to know what has caused this issue.
Now the perennial all Stars. So far, his blood work
and other routine testing has been normal. Bets won't play
in the exhibition game today. He's still a long shot

(26:43):
for a Thursday's game against the Detroit Tigers. That is
their opening day in LA.

Speaker 4 (26:52):
Let's talk, Let's continue.

Speaker 3 (26:54):
Okay, so Bets, he's transitioning to shortstop full time now.
He played most of his career in right field in
second base. He also won that MVP award in Boston
in twenty eighteen, so he's almost eight years removed now
from winning that MVP for the Red Sox. I'm still

(27:15):
upset that that trade happened in the first place. So
we're still waiting for the NCUBLEA. When the NCAA gets
with us, we can play some of that Vix Schaeffer audio.
We also will have some gyms slosnaggle for you later
and Craig Way will be joining us in the next
segment to talk baseball as well as recap this women's
basketball win. All that coming up on the Craigway Show

(27:37):
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.

Speaker 5 (27:38):
The Zone Booker circling round Traffick thanks to forgot kind
of a turt Novitzky fade away with the leg up
in the air.

Speaker 3 (27:46):
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the zone and on the
phone line with us right now is the man on
the call.

Speaker 4 (27:52):
It's Craig Way.

Speaker 3 (27:53):
After a good win for the Texas women to move
on to the Sweet sixteen sixty five forty eight win
against Illinois. Craig, Hi you today, man, I'm good and.

Speaker 2 (28:04):
I just got in the truck right before the break
and I heard all this aks you were having over disrespect.
So I've come to help you with some disrespect a
thing to kind of help you deal with the disrespect
angle a little bit here.

Speaker 4 (28:19):
Okay, Well, I appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (28:22):
All right, Well let's start. Let's start with women's basketball. Longhorns.
Of course, impressive enough playing theirs seed feed and you know,
Big Shafer's been the coach here now five years, and
now it's four times in five years he's had them
in the Sweet sixteen. If they win the Sweet sixteen

(28:42):
game on Saturday against Tennessee, it'll be four times in
the five years getting them into the Elite eight. Because
he had him in the Elite eight his first year
in twenty twenty one and second year twenty twenty two.
They got knocked off by Louisville in the second round
of twenty twenty three, but came back last year and
got to the Elite eight in twenty twenty four. So

(29:03):
if they win Saturday, it'll be back in the Elite
eight for the fourth time in five years. Then we'll
try to crack into the Final four at that point,
but that's on down the road. We know they'll play
Tennessee Saturday. It'll either be at noon or two point
thirty that I think ESPN will probably make the announcement
sometime later today. So there's that. Now, in hearing you

(29:28):
outline it, you did a very good job outlining, but
you also expressed this dismay at you know, not a
lot of talk about Texas and even mentioning Notre Dame. Now,
I understand the angst there in Texas, so it might
harbor a feeling of disrespect if in the Notre Dame

(29:48):
is drawing more attention. Imagine how the TCU people feel
they're the number two seed and there hasn't been that
much said about the horn Frogs and they're actually the
two seeds, and they beat Notre Dame earlier this year
down in the Cayman Island over the Thanksgiving holiday Notre Dame.
Keep in mind, remember this sim being Texas this year.
It's one of the three losses the Logmorts had was

(30:09):
in the sec ACC Challenge back in December. They lost
in overtime in South Bend. They were behind a lot
of it and Rory Harmon made a big shot get
it into overtime that they lost in overtime to Notre Dame.
And Notre Dame, of course has a National Player of
the Year candidate and Hannah Hidalgo, and so that what

(30:32):
was a National Player of the Year candidate for Texas
and Notre Dame is Notre Dame. And so there's gonna
be some of that. I will tell you this, if
there is any disrespect to be perceived, Vick Shaeffer would
love that. He don't have any problem with that. He
didn't mind this team being more of the hunted than
you know, being being more of the hunter than the hunted.

(30:53):
So it's gonna be tough games. The game would Tennessee
is a rebattuer game the long Wards one in Austin
back on January twenty three, but it went to the wire.
What Wards won that one eighty to seventy six. So
it's gonna be a tough game. And I think that
Notre Dame TCU game will be a heck of a game.
And then whoever survives that if Texas wins on Saturday,

(31:13):
they'll have to take out a really good team on
Monday night next Monday night in the regional final of
the Elite Eight. So anyway, it's it's.

Speaker 7 (31:23):
Gonna be a tough go, no doubt about it.

Speaker 2 (31:25):
But they're glad to be back in the elitay.

Speaker 3 (31:27):
We talked about Texas hosting these two games cracking the
movie Saturday, I said, this is huge. It's underrated playing
in front of your home crowd. Did you see that today?

Speaker 2 (31:36):
Yeah, And I'll tell you what you want to if
just to take it one step further, if you do
want to talk about the disrespect thing, it would be
on the part of the NCAA. Well, not really the NCAA.
It's more ESPN that Texas played the last game of
the day on Saturday, Saturday night, and it game of

(31:59):
the day on Monday, Monday afternoon game instead of Monday night.
They didn't even get a full forty eight hours. But
like bick Schafer said in the pregame. You don't worry
about you can get a day off tomorrow and sleep tomorrow.
You got to go and do what you gotta do.
So as it stands, they went about up their business
on less sleep and that was because of what ESPN
was doing and wanting in terms of their television matchups there.

(32:23):
So you know, they feel good about where they were
and how they had to turn it around. They weren't
real happy about having a play early in the afternoon,
but they seized the moment. And part of the reason
for not being happy about that, Andrews.

Speaker 7 (32:40):
I think they thought they wouldn't have a sellout. Well,
they didn't have a sellout, but it wasn't far from it.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
It was over nine thousand fans. They were very noisy,
so they were very supportive. They had to sellout on
Saturday night at more than nine thousand fans today, so
it was a really good showing.

Speaker 3 (32:52):
Well, I hope those ratings for that seven pm South
Dakota State and Yukon game tonight Craig really blow the
roof off ESPN.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
Well, ESPN, Disney ABC are usually only interested in putting
Yukon or USC or. When Iowa had Caitlyn Clark in
the primetime window. So there you could maybe have a
little bit of your disrespect angle going there because of
what the networks are thinking is going to draw the

(33:20):
best ratings solo Texas. All As always drawn really good rating,
So you know, it's kind of weird, but that's okay,
and you're right it okay South Dakota State against Yukon
tonight in that nighttime affair.

Speaker 3 (33:35):
Let's pivot and talk about ratings. Let's talk about polls
because Texas needs to move up in the polls. From baseball,
it looks great against LSU this week in Craig, it was.

Speaker 2 (33:48):
And you know what the most impressive part about all
that was is the resilience of this ball club bouncing
back after an eight to two loss on Friday night.
And I got to tell Andrew Friday night, LSU definitely
looked like, if not the best team in the country,
one of the best. They went in ranked number two.
They hit the ball extremely hard, they pitched very well,

(34:10):
and Texas just could not get going Friday night in
LSU won eight to two, but Texas came back. They
were even down five to two in the fourth inning.
On Saturday and responded at a beginning, ended up getting
the lead, fell behind again at seven to six, and
then scored five unanswered runs to end the ball game.
So there was the resilience of that on Saturday, and

(34:32):
then yesterday going out and seizing the momentum early in
the game. Ruber Ri Ojas did a tremendous job on
the mound, giving them five and two thirds innings. He
did a splendid job for them, and then the bullpen
did the rest of it. So, yeah, that's a huge
series win to take two out of three from the
number two team in the country and to go to

(34:53):
five and one in the SEC and in a four
way tie for first with the likes of Tennessee, they
Arkansas and who am I leaving out the other the
other one that's in there. That's a four way tie.
LS Well, no, LSU has two losses now, but they
have they're in a four way tie for first place

(35:14):
atop the SEC standing so very impressive what they've done
to this point. Now. Jim Schlastega will say, he was
saying it the other day, they've never been in to
use his words, deeper waters in a conference, Texas hasn't
than they are right now, But so far they're swimming

(35:34):
pretty well with their head above water.

Speaker 3 (35:36):
The fourth team you're thinking of is Georgia five and
one this season, Craig in the sec.

Speaker 2 (35:41):
George. By the way, George's sweeps Florida.

Speaker 7 (35:45):
Over the weekend in Gainesville and.

Speaker 2 (35:48):
Scores forty runs over the weekend. They scored eight runs
in Saturday and fifteen yesterday, a free game series sweep
of a ranked Florida team. They sweep them out, they
score forty runs. Oh, by the way, the next home
stand for.

Speaker 7 (36:05):
Text this guess who comes to.

Speaker 2 (36:06):
Town Georgia, Georgia week after next.

Speaker 4 (36:11):
Yes, it's gonna be it's gonna be steady.

Speaker 2 (36:13):
It's a challenge.

Speaker 7 (36:14):
Yeah, it's a challenge, no doubt about it.

Speaker 3 (36:16):
All right, Craig, we're coming up against the top of
the hour here. You're back tomorrow, right, yes.

Speaker 2 (36:21):
And the one thing I want to say, the disrespect
thing about the Major League Baseball thing. Hey, look, let
Japan have its moment.

Speaker 4 (36:28):
In the sun too.

Speaker 2 (36:29):
It's a couple of games, you know, out of one
hundred and sixty two, A lot of people been there.
One hundred and sixty two is too many to be
played anyway. You know, they get their two games and.

Speaker 7 (36:38):
Then they come home. I didn't get to see any
of it, and I'm about Japan, but you know, because.

Speaker 2 (36:42):
I needed my rest more. But but hey, it's okay.
Let them have their two games. We'll be ready for
the traditional opening day for the Dodgers on Thursday against
the Tigers, and then of course the Astros and Rangers.

Speaker 7 (36:53):
Have their openers, so we all really.

Speaker 2 (36:55):
Get to dive in to MLB starting on Thursday.

Speaker 3 (36:59):
Well, I'm trying to do a little more Rodney Dangerfield
for you here in the next hour, Craig.

Speaker 2 (37:03):
I like it. Okay, very good.

Speaker 4 (37:05):
Thank you, Craig. Craig Way.

Speaker 3 (37:06):
He will be back tomorrow talking to all things Longhorn.
Will we come back Texas women finish up the win
against Illinois. We'll hear from Vic Schaffering Company and Jimmish
Lostnagel talks about a big win. All coming up next
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone.

Speaker 4 (37:22):
Sports Radio AM thirteen.

Speaker 3 (37:23):
Hundred Zone Andrews and We'll sitting in for Craig this
Monday afternoon. He will be back in the big chair
again tomorrow. Texas women big win against number eight seed Illinois,
the final score in that one sixty five forty eight
Horns win. Other games that went file this morning to

(37:43):
number two seed at NC State beats seven seed in
Michigan State eighty three to forty nine. Game happening currently
number three seed Oklahoma leading number sixteed Iowa at halftime
thirty eight to twenty seven. But let's take you to
the postgame press conference with Vic Shaffer and his team,
a large contingent.

Speaker 8 (38:03):
Of University of Texas student athletes and head coach Vic Shaffer.
Sorry for shuffling things around a little bit, but we
would like to we organize yet here.

Speaker 4 (38:12):
With Rory She's not here yet with this all right, Rory.

Speaker 8 (38:14):
Harmon will be joining us. But right now we've got
coach Schaeffer with sophomore guard Madison Booker, senior guard shaf Holly,
junior guard Jack olenga win in Tonda. Very good, Bart,
I've been practicing, Coach, I've been practicing.

Speaker 2 (38:26):
Actually.

Speaker 8 (38:26):
First of all, congratulations seriously on the victory today. Coach,
if you could start with an opening statement, please.

Speaker 9 (38:32):
Yeah, man, just giving God the glory for number thirty three.
Serve an incredible lord. Heespleshed me with an incredible team.
That team was really really focused today. I was really
proud of their prep to have to play a really
good Illinois team on one day prep after you know,

(38:52):
we knew we didn't just have our best night the
other night, but again a lot of that had to
do with being off two weeks. But we don't ever
try to sugarcoat things or make excuses around here. We're
pretty accountable. But just really proud of our team. I
thought they came out the first half and really established
themselves and did what we wanted to do.

Speaker 6 (39:11):
We only had three turnovers.

Speaker 9 (39:13):
The reason I want Rory in here is because she
runs our team, but she really set the tone today defensively.
On one, we have so much respect for those guards
at Illinois as well as Bostic inside, but we knew
that we had to really get on one a little
bit and try to establish ourselves defensively because we didn't

(39:35):
do a very good job of that the other night.
And Rory has done that her whole career. Again, I
say it, I'll challenge anybody that wants to challenge me.
You do what she does picking up ninety four feet
in the press, running our offense. If that ain't the
best defensive player in the year.

Speaker 6 (39:51):
I don't know who is.

Speaker 9 (39:53):
So she's somebody that we lean on for so much,
and she wants to do so well, and so she's
like me. She wears, you know, she's like me, She
wears her feelings on her shoulders and and just takes
so much responsibility. And so you're late. I've been praising
you for eighteen minutes. But she just you know, there's

(40:15):
no one like her. And again, it's why we've won
like we've won here at Texas because it is started
with her. And again just cause you're welcome to show
me anybody else, because I don't think there is that person.
And she creates so many issues. You know, that's seven

(40:38):
assists today to turnovers, four steals and runs our team
and so.

Speaker 6 (40:43):
Jock having a career day.

Speaker 9 (40:45):
You know, she's if she'll stay within herself and just
do things that we know she's capable of doing, she
can do that. And I thought tonight again, when I
can play her, it opens up the playbook for me
for some other players, mainly this one, and so the
four guard lineup has helped us some, but tonight I

(41:06):
thought when Jock came in, things really changed for us
and Booker went on a little run. We got her
some really good looks. I thought she was really good today.
Obviously nine for eighteen with six rebounds. She too had
two steals, had a breakaway layup off of a steel
out tie and so you know, again I thought our

(41:27):
team was locked in.

Speaker 6 (41:28):
They were focused.

Speaker 9 (41:30):
A little bittersweet today, Shay, it's her last game in
the in Austin. Been here five years. You know, she
and I have won a lot of games together. We've
had a lot of good times.

Speaker 6 (41:44):
She doesn't have a bad day.

Speaker 9 (41:47):
Coach Conrad's in the back back there, and I know
she appreciates like I do, those kids that come into
the gym every day with a smile on their face.
They're low maintenance, they go to class, they just take
care of their business, and yet they bring something to
the table and they work. And that's Shay Holly. She

(42:08):
just all she's done has helped us win. And it
doesn't matter and what capacity. She's just a winner. But
she's a great teammate, She's a great longhorn. She's just
somebody that you don't run into very often in your career.

(42:28):
As far as when I say the attitude, the work
ethic every day, no bad days, no frowns, no just
everything about her. And you know you'll miss that when
you're a coach. You miss those kids that come in
every day and are like that. But I appreciate her.
I know our team appreciates her. And she's really impacted
the University of Texas women's basketball program.

Speaker 6 (42:52):
And again you have to give her credit.

Speaker 9 (42:55):
She's made herself into a Big twelve All Defense Team
player and now an SEC player and a difference player.
And so again, proud of our team. Onto the next one.
I'm excited to take this group to Birmingham. This is

(43:16):
one of my better teams, y'all, and that's why I
want it so bad for him. We've got enough and
so I'm excited to have a chance to go play again.

Speaker 4 (43:27):
Thanks coach, and we're going to.

Speaker 3 (43:28):
We're hearing from Vick Schaeffer and his team after a
win against Illinois, moving on to Birmingham for the Sweet sixteen.

Speaker 8 (43:36):
Stay with questions here in the room unless I see
anyone online that would like to ask a question, use
the raise hand function online. First, we're going to start
with Danny Davis, Austin American Statesman.

Speaker 10 (43:46):
Danny Rory's inspectus gave such a passioned defensive you, I'm
kind of wondering did you enter this postseason at all
with a chip on your shoulders since you weren't a
finalist for Defensive Player of the Year only on I'll
mention on the All American team, do you have anything
to prove this this postseason?

Speaker 11 (44:05):
Yeah, I'm completely honored to be on that list with
the players that are on there as well, because there's
some great players and great defensive players, and it's great
to see that people can see my effort on the
defensive end. And but I take pride to defense, like
that's just my thing, Like it's been like that forever,
and coming to play for coach Shafer, who takes that

(44:26):
same amount of pride, It's just it means a lot
to me. And but I'm gonna keep playing. And it's
it's not just me, it's also my teammates. We've joined
together and we've been working a lot on our defense,
and it was really great today And but no, I
of course it seems like I want to just play
so hard. Just knowing that I wasn't playing that tournament
last year. It just means a lot to be playing again.

Speaker 8 (44:46):
So yeah, yes, please state your name and affiliation before
your question.

Speaker 12 (44:51):
Some made the next hijack as coaches had a career
day for you. How does it feel for you to
like see a same ovation for you as get checked
out of the court and the success and recognition you're
getting today.

Speaker 13 (45:05):
I mentioned this the other day. Moody is an awesome environment.
Y'all saw it today, But they've always been here and
it's just awesome to always be around them and to
play and have that home court advantage, and also to
know that my family's they're supporting me in the crowd
as well.

Speaker 4 (45:21):
So I'm just out there having fun.

Speaker 11 (45:25):
Sam Ferris from fansided, Maddie, you had four turnovers in
the last game and you only had two tonight.

Speaker 6 (45:30):
What did you do over the last day and a
havel to really lock in and make sure you're focused
for today.

Speaker 4 (45:36):
I don't know, same thing.

Speaker 14 (45:37):
I just you know how to be smarter. I'm kind
of mad I did get them to do those two
turnovers in the fourth quarter in.

Speaker 6 (45:44):
Locker room, I was kind of fake crying and cloche
for about it.

Speaker 14 (45:48):
But yeah, I mean I just think that today I
made better decisions with the ball, just passed the ball
to my teammates being more aware. I think I just
seen the fourth quarter that got a little kind of
come a little lazy with the passes and stuff like that.
And hey, he's better than for tuneovers too. Right now,
we will keep you know, getting it down.

Speaker 15 (46:07):
Yeah, Kirk Bowls from the Houston Chronicle. Jack, just seemed
like your breakout moment. Do you feel that way? And
are you scared now that your expectations that Coach Schaffer
and your teammates have for you just really gone to
the roof.

Speaker 4 (46:21):
No, never been scared.

Speaker 13 (46:23):
I've been prepared for this moment since day one freshman year,
preseason training. It's really just my teammates having the trust
in me, and I'm having the trust in myself. Y'all
just saw the most confident version of myself. And it's
only up from here. This isn't the only game we have.
We have Tennessee coming up, and I'm glad to make contributions.

(46:43):
But I know, you know, every game is a different lineup,
every day, every game is a different scout. So just
ready for the next one. And no, I'm not scared.
I'm quite excited.

Speaker 4 (46:54):
Actually, Thanks get here.

Speaker 6 (46:57):
You caught up all this life, Coach Schafer.

Speaker 8 (47:01):
Sorry, we've taken questions for the players only right now,
and then we'll have coach once the players are dismissed.

Speaker 6 (47:05):
Thank you, ladies.

Speaker 16 (47:08):
Your coach got you ready in less than twenty four
hours to get prepared. Talk about what it means to
have somebody that get you prepared for the environment like
this and you still come out.

Speaker 6 (47:20):
And play a top defensive game.

Speaker 17 (47:23):
Okay, sorry, yeah, I think we've all talked about it
at some point. Like our staff is unreal the amount
of time and energy and effort they put into our scouts,
and not just our coaches, but our practice players as well.
We have an eight am shoot around today and they're
in our practice gym early going through Illinois sets and
preparing for shoot around so they can help prepare us,

(47:47):
which I don't think you get that everywhere, And we
appreciate that so much because they do get us so ready,
Like we feel so confident going into a game because
we guarded every set against our guys, and if we're
able to do it against that guard them, then we
feel really good going into the game. But it's really
special just the staff we have in the practice. Guys,

(48:07):
they put a lot of time and we appreciate it
a lot.

Speaker 3 (48:10):
We'll hear more from the Texas women's basketball program after
a win today at the Moody Center against Illinois, that
final sixty five to forty eight, Number one Texas moves
on to the Sweet six team. We come back more
from postgame from Vic Schaeffer and his team on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred

(48:35):
The Zone. Andrew Zimmle filling in for Craig on this
Monday afternoon. A big win for the Texas women sixty
five to forty eight. Oh good against eleven seeded Illinois
to send Texas to the Sweet sixteen. We take you
back to the Moody Center for postgame with Vic Shaeffer
and his team.

Speaker 8 (48:55):
We have time for one final question for the student athletes,
So Cedric Golden Austin American.

Speaker 18 (49:00):
States fin Oh yeah, for Rory and for Shay what
Rory first? What was your plan on one? You know,
she had a really good game the other night and
you guys kept her in the wraps. And how exciting
is it to be going to Birmingham where there's going
to be some of the best guards, including yourselves, in
the country in the same gym.

Speaker 11 (49:18):
The The plan on number one was, you know, just
suppressing them. They had six or seven I was like,
what sex or seven players in their rotations they normally
go through and so we were thinking, Okay, if we
can wear them down a little bit, they may start
making some mental absence and turning the ball over quite
a bit. So she was able to do that. And

(49:39):
you know, when you pressure the ball on the point guard,
they're the ones that are kind of starting the offense,
so they can't get into that offense. Then it kind
of just messes up their offensive flow. And I think
as a team that I was on the pressure in
the ball and there's denials everywhere. We have her post
players like one hundred percent perfectly hedging the ball, screens
and three people in help.

Speaker 4 (49:58):
So it just was beautiful, beautiful defense today.

Speaker 11 (50:00):
So I'm just glad that it works out and we
should translate that to the next game.

Speaker 17 (50:05):
So yeah, yeah, it's really exciting going to Birmingham. I
think all of us were watching the Tennessee Ohio State
game last night. Obviously, Tennessee is very talented. They have
a lot of people that they play different from this team,
so you know it will be a different scout but we'll
be ready for We'll be prepared for them too. But yeah,
really exciting. It's gonna be a lot of good basketball.

(50:27):
It's gonna be fun.

Speaker 6 (50:29):
Ladies.

Speaker 8 (50:29):
Can't thank you enough for your time this weekend. Congratulations
again and best of luck in Birmingham.

Speaker 6 (50:34):
Thank you for joining us, Thank you much.

Speaker 8 (50:38):
As they exit the podium, just to remind you that
the Texas locker room is open and at the same time,
Illinois locker room is now open as well.

Speaker 4 (50:46):
To the media.

Speaker 13 (50:49):
Team.

Speaker 4 (50:51):
I'm pretty.

Speaker 8 (50:57):
All right, we're gonna do take questions for uh for
coach Schaeffer. First question back there, Please identify yourself in affiliation.

Speaker 19 (51:03):
Please, Ryan Hopper, t SCB sports coach, looking ahead to
this Tennessee matchup, having already played them this year. In
form of your preparations for such a big game, Well.

Speaker 9 (51:16):
I mean, they're obviously playing really well at a high level,
and they're a unique team with a you know, an
unique strategy. So but you know, I feel like I've
got the best point guard in the country, and I
feel like Madison Booker is the second you know, she's

(51:36):
one in one A. You know, when it comes to
point guards, and I think you can throw Brie in there.
I mean, those those three are the best in my mind,
and you're going to have to handle the ball. You know,
you're gonna have to handle the ball against them, and
they're going to try to do their thing, and so.

Speaker 6 (51:53):
You know, I think we handled it pretty well here.

Speaker 9 (51:56):
I think we have a pretty good understanding of what
they want to do and how they want to do it.
They're a really good team, but you better have some
guards when you go play against them. And man, I
love my guards, like I'm not trading them for anybody.

Speaker 6 (52:09):
Again, with with Rory and.

Speaker 9 (52:11):
Madison, you've got one A and one aat at point
and uh, you know, they they they just make really
good decisions. And you know, I think we had a
great plan here. We had a knockdown drag out with them,
and so, uh, you know, I know our team will
be confident and and so will I and uh, you know, again,

(52:33):
a lot of respect for them. They've had a heck
of a year and are playing really well. You go
into Ohio State and beat them on their own floor,
you got to respect that. It's hard to do. It's
hard to go on somebody's home floor and win at
this level. So will that to be ready to go?

Speaker 20 (52:48):
Josh Newman from lone StarLive dot com, Vick, you spoke
with a lot of conviction that you believe that this
team has enough, not that you didn't have enough with
previous teams, but what is it about this team that
you really feel this way going in to uh Birmingham.

Speaker 9 (53:02):
Well, I like the depth of my guards, and I
love I love the size that I have inside. And
you know, if we can get half of what we
got from Jockalinga today at the four, we're just a
different team. And so the playbook gets way bigger when

(53:24):
I can play.

Speaker 6 (53:25):
Her justice at the four for everybody else.

Speaker 9 (53:28):
When I go to the fore guard line up, the
playbook gets a little bit smaller. Now you might think, okay, well,
what's that mean. I've seen your playbook. You know, it's
a pretty big playbook, so it's not that small. But
it does hinder me some and so I I just
you know, when Leah went down, you know, we just

(53:50):
we've really been we've just been hamming egging it, you know,
so to speak. There and we found a way to
win some games. And uh so I like this team
because first it starts with your point guard. We obviously
have an unbelievable All American and Madison Booker, I mean
you saw it today.

Speaker 6 (54:10):
That is she is special.

Speaker 9 (54:14):
And then when you can go down there and have
Taylor and Kai, not many people have that. So this
is a team that I have a lot, a ton
of confidence in and I just, you know, I want
it so bad for him. I have to catch myself
sometimes because I just I want them to be perfect
and it an'tual happening.

Speaker 21 (54:37):
David Eckert, Austin American statesman, VI, what do you think
went into turning them over twenty times today? I think
they average twelve. I know you've been talking a lot
about Rory, it's just team wide. What went into that number?

Speaker 6 (54:49):
You know?

Speaker 9 (54:50):
We they are really good at pick and roll, and
I watched a lot of film on them and people
that defended them, and we spent a ton of time
yesterday defending their bread and butter, and I thought, I

(55:11):
think we gave up one pick and roll, but it
wasn't to a five player. That's it one time today
and that's their bread and butter and so we felt
like if we could take that away, we'd have a
really good chance. And so I'm gonna tell you, Taylor
Jones and Kyla were so good today, y'all in pick

(55:31):
and roll defense. Way different than they've been maybe all year.
But we really talked about it, and we really worked
on it and made it a point of emphasis for them.
But see, the key is not necessarily you got two
people in that action, but you got three people in help,

(55:53):
and you've got to get those three in the right place.
We had the three in the right place all day,
and so I think when you take took away their
bread and butter, and then again Rory's out there, you know,
bugging the crap out of one, and then our other
guards are out there doing a nice job with ball pressure.
Just it was just really hard for them to run

(56:15):
their stuff, and they do. You know, Sean is a
great coach. They do a nice job. They run a
lot of really good stuff. But I thought we really
did a good job of taking them out today.

Speaker 3 (56:24):
Andrewszim will hanging out with you on The Craig Way
Show a Monday edition. After the Texas Women beat number
eight Illinois to move on to the sweet sixteen sixty
five to forty eight. Matison Booker leading the way for
the long Horns this afternoon twenty points, nine of eighteen shooting,
six rebounds and assist and two steals. Taylor Jones and

(56:45):
double figures as well with twelve points, six of eleven shooting,
five rebounds, a steal, and a block. Let's go back
to Vick Schaeffer as he continues his postgame comments to.

Speaker 6 (56:58):
Brown Horns twenty four.

Speaker 9 (57:00):
Then, Vic, what does it say about your team that
you're this successful and you're not getting much at all
from the three point line? Well, again, I think we
can make those. We only took five today. You know,
they didn't really give us that many. And again it's

(57:20):
a it's a lot bigger deal to y'all than it
is to me. You know, we're you know, we're a
really good basketball team. And you know, I take it.
I take offence to the narrative, not in this room,
but to the narrative that's out there. You know, we

(57:44):
play a third game in fifteen hours at South Carolina,
score forty five points, and all of a sudden, the
narrative is everybody's worried about my offense, I don't think
anybody was talking about somebody's offense yesterday and they only
scored X amount of points.

Speaker 6 (58:03):
It's such an unfair narrative to my kids.

Speaker 9 (58:07):
Again, we don't make excuses, but this team's always gonna
have a chance because they're going to guard. They're always
going to guard, and so I like my offense. I
think we got we shot the ball well today. We
got some great looks. We missed a lot, you know,
we missed a ton of good shots, and so we

(58:27):
missed some layups, and so I think our kids are
are doing a really good job. You want to complain
today about my offense, you can blame the fourth quarter
on me. I had them, I was pulling them back
a little bit because I want them to work.

Speaker 6 (58:41):
The clock and when you're up twenty two or three.

Speaker 9 (58:44):
You know, I've always been that way, So you can
blame the fourth quarter on me. But you know, it
is what it is. I'm not too worried about it.
I think we won thirty three games and it's worked
pretty good.

Speaker 8 (58:58):
We have time for one more formal question being asked here,
but I know coach Schaeffer and Jeremy will coordinate things
off the podium if you have follow ups for coach
with the last question will come from Cedric Golden from
the Austin American Statesman.

Speaker 6 (59:12):
Cedric So honored, Barb So honored. Last time victim. When
you said juckling and needs to play within herself, what
exactly does that mean?

Speaker 9 (59:22):
Yeah, just you know, not trying to. She can get
in trouble trying to do too much sometimes. You know,
just today she took other than the three balls she took,
she took great shots. They were within the offense, She
drove the ball, finished at the rim, she made her
free throws, she had one turnover. I've seen her come

(59:46):
in and touch it three times and have three turnovers.
So that's growth. And so again, the kid's confident. Now
you can sit here and look at her. The confidence
is not her problem and and I love that about her.
You know, you want kids that are fearless, and she qualifies.

(01:00:06):
I just have to get her to pay attention sometimes
to understand we have really good players on our team,
and some of those players can get a better shot
sometimes than the ones she might take. Or she just
tries to. She's trying to do too much, and it's
not a bad thing sometimes when you're trying to please

(01:00:27):
or help somebody, but when she's just let the game
come to her. I can't tell you how many times
I heard Coach Blair say that let the game come
to you. And if you'll just let the game come
to you, sometimes this is what happens. You're seven for ten,
you're nineteen points or five out of six at the line,
I mean, and had one turnover. I mean, didn't hurt

(01:00:48):
me on defense, you know, did not hurt us. So
you know, the other night she came in and she
struggled defensively, and so it's hard. You know, you're throwing
a three player into a new position, and that's what
we've had to do with her, and that's part of
the ham and egging that I'm talking about. And she
has really handled it fantastic.

Speaker 6 (01:01:10):
In my opinion.

Speaker 9 (01:01:11):
She's really been great, and so I'm proud of her,
happy for her that she's able to play as well
as she did tonight. Obviously, our crowd loves her and
loved to see her play well.

Speaker 3 (01:01:22):
And Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. When we
come back, we'll hear from Vic Shaeffer a little bit
more and James. Los Angeles a baseball team wins big
over the weekend. All coming up next Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred Zone Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Andrew Zimmol will sitting in with you this afternoon. You've
followed me on socials at Andrew Underscore Zimmel on Twitter

(01:01:44):
at Andrew Underscore Zimmel. You also can follow me on
Blue Sky and on Instagram as well well. University of
Texas baseball played against number two LSU and after tripping
up on the Friday night game, came back one big
on Saturday eleven to seven and then one on Sunday

(01:02:04):
six to two. Head coach Jim Schloshtangle talking to us
after that Sunday win about his program.

Speaker 22 (01:02:12):
Behind him and the Valantis just fills the strike up.

Speaker 6 (01:02:16):
It's what he does. So uh, he's just huge that.

Speaker 22 (01:02:19):
We only had to use two pitchers in that game,
which sets us up hopefully for a little bit better
set up on Tuesday night, which therefore sets us up
for next weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:02:28):
Guy, you wanted to go with that.

Speaker 22 (01:02:30):
Yeah, wanted to go with Ruger just because we wanted
to see it. We've been talking about it, starting him
if needed. And the one thing you know is you're
getting strikes, and you're getting multiple pitches for strikes, so
versus you know, starting somebody out there and you're kind
of hoping that they catch fire on that particular day.
So I don't know if he did he walk anybody

(01:02:51):
walk to one? Guy Atlantis walked one. We have to
cut him for that. It's only that was his fourth
of the year, I think third or fourth. But now
it just strikes win, you know, especially on Sunday when uh,
you know, it's just so tough to to uh keep
keep keep great offenses down.

Speaker 2 (01:03:08):
Do I know it's a a long season, but you know,
taking you out of first lesson how much does it
serve as some measuring stick of around it for kind
of you know, the team that you have.

Speaker 6 (01:03:16):
Yeah, I think it does in the moment.

Speaker 22 (01:03:19):
But if you've been around the league long enough, you
know you you you can't get over it.

Speaker 6 (01:03:24):
You can't get excited and you can't get down.

Speaker 22 (01:03:28):
I wanna say LSU was like three and twelve at
one point last year and h and played all the
way back and played into a regional and closed regional
championship game. You know, Florida is oh and if they
lost today, you know, they're an awesome team that just
so happened to play Tennessee and Georgia to top four teams.

Speaker 6 (01:03:44):
So in this league, you know, you you take.

Speaker 22 (01:03:48):
The wins, that's for sure. The games are super hard
to win. They're very very easy to lose. So I
think it would be a majoring stick in the moment,
but it's a long season. We have eight more of
these things on the weekends, and they're all they're all
super tough.

Speaker 15 (01:03:59):
It's amazing his first place though, what's that still being
in first place?

Speaker 22 (01:04:03):
Oh yeah, yeah, I mean after going on the road
to oh uh at at Mississippi State and then playing
a great team like LSU at home. Yeah, we we'll
take it.

Speaker 6 (01:04:12):
That's still an ideal as a.

Speaker 22 (01:04:16):
Well, I think one it makes it my deal as
a relief pitcher is he he's those strikes, which you'd
like out of every pitcher, those multiple pitches for strikes.

Speaker 6 (01:04:23):
He's unique.

Speaker 22 (01:04:26):
He can it's not just a one anything or even
a one time through the order thing, because he's certainly
has started written all over him.

Speaker 21 (01:04:34):
Uh.

Speaker 22 (01:04:34):
And we'd like to get to that point when our
team's good enough right now. We need him to pitch
in that particular role. But he just throws a ton
of strikes with two D two or three different pitches.
And it's a really slow heartbeat for a young player.
I mean, it's he's just he's kind of the zen master.
Him and Max together. I'm not sure what goes on
when they meet. I just know that, uh, the door's closed.

Speaker 6 (01:04:58):
And and he pitches well, Max gets over pretty quick.

Speaker 2 (01:05:01):
Bit of me. I didn't even see.

Speaker 18 (01:05:02):
Him at them come out of the dugout to go
to Max Winger.

Speaker 22 (01:05:06):
Uh, yeah, I don't know what he's doing in there,
but he's he's doing an awesome job.

Speaker 2 (01:05:11):
You know.

Speaker 22 (01:05:11):
He just does a great job of giving guys weapons,
making them unique.

Speaker 6 (01:05:16):
They don't. You know.

Speaker 22 (01:05:17):
It may not be the most traditional way to pitch,
but it doesn't have to be just has to be successful.

Speaker 3 (01:05:23):
We'll listen to head coach Shoop Slas snangle after the
Longhorns win their second SEC series of the year against
number two ranked LSU six' to two On. Sunday was
that Final let's hear more from head Coach Hump slawt.

Speaker 4 (01:05:35):
Snaggle why you.

Speaker 6 (01:05:36):
Said you wanted to see your team get off the.

Speaker 18 (01:05:38):
Mat so what did you think of their Responsible.

Speaker 22 (01:05:40):
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah obviously outstanding get off the mat
come back. YESTERDAY i think the crowd had a lot
to do with, that you. Know and that's What i'm
saying is just the pus in my opening, statement just
having the fans spur on the, team Like i've seen
it happen some AT, Tcu i've seen it happen AT
a AND.

Speaker 6 (01:05:57):
M i've seen it happen here from the from the other. Side.
Uh but that's just those those are the real.

Speaker 22 (01:06:03):
Fans those are the ones that they can feel that
the team needs some help and and they're, cheering they're
getting things, going uh before something.

Speaker 6 (01:06:11):
Happens And i'll know you preached.

Speaker 9 (01:06:12):
The little things like On friday, NIGHT i.

Speaker 17 (01:06:14):
Think it's like six walk side just to how much
of the series came down.

Speaker 6 (01:06:18):
To those normal.

Speaker 22 (01:06:19):
Details, yeah and two out, hitting you, Know uh we
got Uh galvan's first hit with two, outs you, know
the third base and made a heck of a play
on On max's ball down in the third base. Line
and when he came back in the, DUGOUT i, said
you know that at bat is Gonna you're gonna have
awesome at bats the rest of the day because he
stayed on the, ball you, know and When max is

(01:06:40):
not rolling, over but she's you, know trying not. To
but when he stayed on the ball and hit that
ball down the third base, LINE i grabbed him in
the dugout.

Speaker 6 (01:06:47):
And, said just trust. That that's awesome and awesome at.

Speaker 22 (01:06:49):
Bat and then homer the next at, bat and then
he stayed on another one that Carry out hit that,
uh That's max hit that one that Carry out laid out.

Speaker 6 (01:06:58):
For that was a huge.

Speaker 22 (01:06:59):
Run so but, yeah he's the guys are doing. Awesome
do you Enjoy maxi's home? Run you have a big
fan of a big fan of. It when it goes
between the polls and it doesn't bounce, first it's.

Speaker 6 (01:07:09):
Awesome it's a great play multiple.

Speaker 22 (01:07:12):
Points Sometimes i'll probably you, guys you, know panfing back every. Time, yeah, yeah,

it all. Fall you, know it's part of who we.
Are play to a, standard not a. Scoreboard get your

(01:07:32):

change the game with one swing in the, bat just
Like max And, Jalen Ryland.

Speaker 6 (01:07:39):
Adrian you, know those guys can do the same.

Speaker 22 (01:07:41):
Thing so you can't ever feel good about you, know,
four you need, five, five you need. Six if you
if you're down by, three keep it at three because

three and he was very dismissive of. It he was
not nearly as worried about the three points shooting for
this team as the outside media. Is AND i joked
in our number two of the, program HOW i felt very, disrespected,

(01:12:02):
honestly of the way that this team has been talked
about and the way this team has been treated by
the national, media AND i think he's starting.

Speaker 4 (01:12:10):
To feel a little bit of that disrespect as.

Speaker 3 (01:12:13):
Well is that possible to say that maybe he's not
exactly thrilled with hearing about how his team is struggling to.
SHOOT i think that that's. FAIR i would be upset
too IF i had won thirty three games this season
and nobody was giving me the respect to think about
winning the national championship and he's gone. On Vic shaeffer
