Speaker 1 (00:03):
It's the craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame Broadcasting Craig Way.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Some more input coming off the tex slide.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Somebody said, I think if we talking about Texas managed
to play clean football, meaning penalty free football, he said,
we will win these last few games, even if it's ugly.
The penalties killer Mojo. They did a better job, although
I still think they had seven penalties in the game

(00:41):
in the winter for Florida on Saturday, but they were
kind of spread out and rather inconsequential as opposed to
the Vanderbilt game where they really were impactful. I think
Sarks said that of the ten penalties they had, seven
were huge, and that the impacted drives and killed off
big plays and things like that that made that game

(01:01):
closer than a lot of folks have, you know, uh,
you know, figured it to be, and it could have
been much a wider.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Margin. But that's what happens.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
If you make mistakes, whether it's turnovers or penalties, you
can keep a team in the football game, and it
happened in that one.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
So I'm curious how many of those came with, you know,
the twos and threes up versus the first I remember
Kelvin Banks had a holding penalty in the first half.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
He came on a first down.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
But was there any other flags in the first half.
I don't I'm trying to think. I don't remember any.
The biggest thing to me was the false starts, yeah right,
and I thought Texas maybe they had something with the
second units. But I don't remember anything in the first
two quarters outside of that Kelvin Banks holding penalty.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Yeah, I'm trying to think. I uh, when there were
one laid hit on a quarterback might have been. I
can't remember for sure anyway, that most of those Your
point is is well made. Most of those came after
the issue had kind of already been said. But yes,
to his point, they're going to need to stay penalty free,

(02:08):
especially on the road, and I've done a good job
on the road other than that Vanderbilt game. I think
of the Oklahoma game, I think of the Michigan game
of staying away from from costly penalties.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
So they're going to have to do a good job
on that.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
On Saturday, somebody else pointing toward the Cowboys and Jerry
Jones's rock Bottom, Jerry rock bottom.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
There was that illegal block in the back on Shalen
Gilbot on the trade more fumble in turn right.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Yeah, that nullified most of the return. The net wound
up being like five yards or three yards or something
like that.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
And then there was also another legal block, remember like
on it was like that like Reid option play, Yeah,
and Gilbot came in and like it was kind of
like he It's one of those weird where the defend
the defensive players called.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
For whole for the for the illegal chop block.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
There's three right there in the first.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
Half, and so I think that one was in the
second when Florida was making a drive, wasn't it.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
It was second quarter, second to the second quarter. It
was on the drive where Gilbolt later came back and
at that third and fourteen.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
That's right, that's right, very important on that one.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
And then somebody else said that, hey, oh was her
man seatpalace. So the way the soccer team won was
amazing and clutch Texas Fike. Yeah, it was what a
beautifully placed ball, you know, that was just that's that's
what the Brits would say in soccer. Oh a lovely
ball that was that was laid up lots like exquisitely played.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
That was knocked in on the header by Curly Montgomery.
I will ask, uh, we'll ask as Kelly about that tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Trevor guzy face mask in the third quarter, Ye throw
up the four and then there was a Kim Williams
holding penalty when he came back in after the injuries.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
So yeah, so they're five. They do want to clean
those up going into the rest of it, but they
did a better job than they had. It was all
part of a much better effort on that. A couple
more thoughts from Steve Sarkisian and the next one would
be about efficiency, working on efficient practices and practicing being

(04:19):
efficient on the drive and is that practiced during the week.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
No, not necessarily like that.

Speaker 5 (04:25):
We really made a point of emphasis and I talked
about it like playing good football on first and second down.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
You know a lot of times we want to.

Speaker 5 (04:34):
Talk about critical factors and stats of third down red area.

Speaker 4 (04:38):
You know those things.

Speaker 5 (04:39):
Well, sometimes it's football is a lot easier when you
don't have to play third down. And the reason you
don't have to play third down is you're really efficient
on first and second down. And so we're at our
best when we're like that. Now, you have to minimize
the self inflicted wounds, right, the false starts, the penalties,
the negative plays. But when we can play efficient football

(04:59):
and move the ball forward on first and second down,
generally that bodes well for us, and that's when we
can start to create some of those explosives.

Speaker 4 (05:06):
So but but no, we don't.

Speaker 5 (05:08):
Practice it per se, but in reality, that's really what
we're doing every day.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
This has been brought up several times, the downfield blocking
that the Longhorns have done with receivers. There was one that,
speaking of penalties, there was a penalty flag thrown it
first on Isaiah Bond, and then they picked up the
flag and said no, it was not an illegal downfield block.
But Sark was asked about how important it is to
be blocking downfield after after a catch, in helping guys

(05:36):
maximize the game.

Speaker 5 (05:37):
Yeah, no, I think there's some there's some great things
to look at, Like, you know, the around Isaiah Bond,
Matthew Golden makes a really critical block against an unscouted look,
and then you go watch Ryan Niblet go block the corner.
You watch Cam Williams thirty yards downfield. You watch Gunner
Helm thirty yrs downfield. You watch Jake Major's forty yards

(05:59):
downfield blocking on that play. You watch the touchdown pass
to Golden there at the end of the first half.
You see Trey Wisner coming off from the opposite side
picking up a blitzer to give Quinn that time to
throw that ball to Matthew Golden. You see Jack Gibson's
run late in the game, and you watch Silas Bolden
block in a corner. You see Ryan Wingo blocking two

(06:21):
defenders so to give Jack that opportunity to score.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
You look at the screen to Trey Wisner.

Speaker 5 (06:28):
You'll see Kelvin Banks with an initial block off the edge.
You'll see You'll see Jake Majors, you see Cole Hudson
out in the open field block, and you see Gunner
Helm downfield. You'll see Jayden Blue running from across the
field trying to get a block. And so I think
that's the nature of this team right now. We're very selfless.
They love playing for one another. We've been talking about

(06:50):
it last week, preaching it all week. Eleven is one.
Eleven is one where we don't want eleven different players
on offense. We want one offensive team that plays together
as one and so we take a lot of pride
in that, and that's when our offense is at its best.
And I think it showed up probably in its best
kind of frame Saturday of us playing that type of football.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
And one final comment from Sark and again about blocking
Trevor Goosby. We mentioned Gooseby had that had that face
mask call, but Goozby that was like the second play
he was in after Cameron when Hes went out with
the injury, and then he played really well after that.
So the depth on the offensive line was tested a
little bit. I've been fortunate that they haven't had, you know,
offensive line and key starting offensive line and go down

(07:33):
for significant amounts of time. And they had a little
bit of scare with Cam going out, but then he
came back in later. But Goosby played, you know, there
was that one penalty, but otherwise played.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
Well at that right tackle spot.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
And he was asked Sark was asked about Gooseby and
his development coming off the bench.

Speaker 4 (07:51):
Yeah, no, I'm super pumped for Trevor. You know, he
he was.

Speaker 5 (07:56):
A skinny, tall, skinny kid when he first got here,
and he is really worked it and developing his body
he's gotten with coach Beckton.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
In the weight room.

Speaker 5 (08:05):
He's worked hard with our with our dietitians of eating
the right stuff because he's always been extremely athletic and
he's always been very tough. I mean, he's got a
nasty streak about him, but now he's got the size
to kind of back it up. And I think the
development that he and coach Flood have put forth of
his ability to play really either tackle spot, left or

(08:26):
right tackle and given us the confidence to put him
in there to go in there and play. And he
wasn't perfect, and I didn't expect him to be, but
he's got a very very bright future ahead of him.
And I think a lot of it is kind of
internal drive that he has, but he's also got some
great measurables that that equate to being a really good player.

Speaker 2 (08:44):
All Right.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
So there it is. Comments from Sark will be back
to wrap up today's edition in the program on sports
