Welcome back to the Great Belt Show at Christopher Kidd
And on Friday for the second hour, the final hour
of the show.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Where they do something different on Monday.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Mike Sherman's gonna be up next after headlines brought to
you by Frostbirit Corps Light Choose Chill. But before we do,
your chance to win one thousand dollars in our daily
power play, go to nine through three KJR dot com
and credit Cred credit and of that word at nine
through three KJR dot com for your chance to one

(00:40):
one thousand dollars. Mike Sherman's coming up from Cape cod
He's calling me on the phone right now, so Chris,
we'll call him and we'll talk to him right after
we get done with these headlines about to you by
Frostbroud cors Light Choose Chill. Mike Congrin did not get
enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The fifty
person Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee chose four
for enshrinement, its smallest class in twenty years. Mike Cogrean

(01:01):
was not one of those four. Our coach, the Seahawks
and Packers' Super Bowl coach was a finalist. But only
one of the five from the Senior Player, Contributor and
coach pool of finalists got the eighty percent of votes
needed for reduction. That was Holmgren's former Packers wide receiver
Sterling Sharp. Incidentally, Antonio Gates, Eric Allen Jared Allen were
the three modern europe players selected for the Hall of Fame.

(01:24):
Holgrean's not going to take his wife Kathy to the
Saturday performance of Hamilton at the Paramount Theater.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
He says, You're in Seattle. They have tickets for that.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
The thing is now that Mike Hogran may not get
in next year either, because Bill Belichick becomes eligible for
the Hall of Fame and will assuredly be a first
ballot Hall of Famer and the only coach from that
group to get in. This year, the news format whittles
down finalist to just one coach.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
At least that's how it went this year per year.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
Also last night, in the NFL on Our Show from
the Super Bowl in New Orleans, Josh Allen edge doc
Lamar Jackson for the NFL MVP Award. The same Associated
Press panel with fifty voters who named Jackson over Allen
for All Pro Quarterback turned around and voted Allen over.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Jackson for the MVP. Better figure that out.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Allen got twenty seven thirds at first place votes to
Jackson's twenty three. Former Barts quarterback in serious XF NFL
analyst Jim Miller picked Jackson fourth on his MVP ballad.
He's the only voter didn't have Jackson first or second.
Hats off to the Associated Press, my former employer, for
publishing all voters and their votes.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Imagine that accountability.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Allen's the first player in twenty one season to win
the MVP without being selected First Team All Pro Jaguars
and for forty nine defenseman Aeric Arms that won the
NFL's Walter Payton and Warren as the player who's most
done most with people on and off the field, Russell
Wilson won in twenty twenty. In his acceptance speech last night,
New Orleans, Arms since Stead quote, I believe in humanity.
I believe that all of us have the power to

(02:46):
be the change in our society.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Well said.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Joining us now in the.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Beacon Plumbing hogh line I apologize for keeping him on
hold is Mike Sherman, who got his first NFL job
from Mike Holmgren as the Packers assistant. His first NFL
offensive coordinator job was as a Seahawks offensive coordinator in
nineteen ninety nine when Mike Holmgren took the Seahawks head job,
and then he replaced Mike Hogren as the head coach

(04:36):
of the Green Bay Packers. Mike Sherman joins us with
presumably from his home in Cape Cod Massachusetts. Good morning, sir,
it's a pleasure to have you on our show.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
Thanks Mike, Hey, good morning to you guys. How y'all
doing out there?

Speaker 1 (04:47):
We are well, we're cold like the northeast Massachusetts winner here.

Speaker 4 (04:52):
You know, I'm probably as far away from you as
it I possibly. Yeah, yeah, I'm one. This peninsula is
stick it out into Atlantic Ocean, and we had all
kinds of wind and snow, but uh, but survived.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Armouth Point, is that right?

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yarmouth Port Yearmouth, Yeah, Yarmouth Port RT.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
Yeah, it's really pronounced yahmouth yalla port.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
I didn't want to fake it from not being for Massachusetts.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Tell us, Mike Sherman, how you got in touch with
Mike Homegrend. How it came to be that Mike Holgren
hired you onto his packers' staff and the relationship there.
Who'd you know or how'd that come about?

Speaker 4 (05:32):
Well, it's pretty cut and dry, to be honest with you. You know,
we always had a pro day at Texas A and
M and H. In that pro day they sent scouts
and coaches and so forth. Well, Andy Reid came and
representing the packers, and.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
So we had a little get together.

Speaker 4 (05:47):
Uh, with all the coaches and scouts after after the
workouts of the players, and uh, you know, I had
good conversation with Andy and didn't really expect anything out
of it. But uh, not too long after that, I
get a phone call. What i'd be interested is after
I see I think it was after the Super Bowl,
I'm not mistaken, And uh, if i'd be interested coming

(06:11):
up in interviewing for the package job. Well, I had
always wanted to be the coordinator at Texas A and
m so I had that job, and then I left
that to go to Green Bay, and so I went
on the interview. Mike was ready to go on vacation
because you know those guys, it was quite a grind
for them. And so I met with Mike first, Tom
Levat second, Andy Reid third, and we all get together

(06:36):
and it seemed to work out. It seemed like it
was a good fit. And uh yeah, I old Mike
home and everything.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
I mean.

Speaker 4 (06:42):
He gave me an opportunity and really taught me a lot,
not just about football, but about family and about life
and in general, and about maintaining a sense of humor.
I don't know anybody that makes me laugh more than
Mike Home't be honest with you this in times where
Mount Vesuvius came out of him too. But the theme

(07:04):
was let's just get to the snack.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
You know.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
I remember because I was a little man on the
totem pole. And so I did the carts and you
show the cards to the scout team and they they
run the defenses on the carts. Well, I prided myself
in trying to stop Mike Homegrens offense from running against
my Scout team defense.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
And Mike didn't appreciate that.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
You know.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
That night, you know, we.

Speaker 4 (07:27):
Had read zone meeting at five o'clock and he was
out of there at six o'clock for date night on
Thursday night. So so the next the next day, you know,
we go against the offense, and you know, I stopped
him a couple of times, and everybody's looking at me.
Just let them let let.

Speaker 3 (07:45):
Let score a touchdown, you know.

Speaker 4 (07:46):
So I said, the whole eleven guys ran to the
left and the back, we ran a screen to the
ran a screen to the right. And that's more of
what Mike home he wanted positive about. Comes on Thursday
meeting and UH and a Friday practice and we eventually
stubbornly ended up giving to him.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
You mentioned to me off air about a half hour ago, Mike,
how surprised you were. This is Mike Sherman talking from Kicott,
Massachusetts on a Beacon plumbing hotline about Mike Hombrean, And.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
You said to me, as we both were surprised that
Mike Homyeran didn't get into the Hall of Fame.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
What's the socialad you're surprised about him compared to contemporaries,
or how do you view him in the history of football?

Speaker 4 (08:31):
Well, I don't know, I have You're asking the wrong
guy that question, because I'm somewhat biased on were I
don't call him, I don't call him Michael, I call
him coach Hombren.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
He'd always to be coach Holman.

Speaker 4 (08:46):
But I just thought it was a no brainer, and
actually was making preparations with my son who now still
lives in Green Bay and works in green Bay, and
to go to the Hall of Fame event. And I
was shocked this one. And when I didn't find out
to this morning that I didn't even bother looking last
night because I didn't think. I didn't think it was

(09:06):
possible that a guy that took two separate teams, two
separate quarterbacks to the Super Bowl, And you know, I
don't know, he's a unique individual. I know he didn't
politic for this job, and I mean for this Fall
of Fame induction. But hopefully next year, I know it
gets tougher and tougher, but he is certainly well deserving,

(09:27):
has no doubt about that.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
Coach.

Speaker 5 (09:29):
How do you think the perception of Homegrun's contributions to
the game has evolved over the years, And do you
think the Hall of fam should reconsider how they evaluate coaches.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
Yeah, I think I hate the fact when all of
a sudden we make such a drastic switch in philosophy,
and it seems like we did that this year with
the limited amount of guys that were inducted. And I
know they wanted to be a strong group, but Mike
would only add to that group and not take away
from it. So you know, I wish they would go

(10:02):
back and look at it like they go back and
look at other things. Coach Olgrin has always been influential
and the way the league was headed, and you know
the owners meetings, he would be very much a voice
of reason and in simplicity in many ways, and so
I think that the league can definitely take a peek

(10:26):
at it. This is really what they wanted. It seems
a little bit unfair, but it's calling me to ask
my opinion, except.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
You, guys, coach.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
Former Packers assistant, former Seahawks offense accorded is then Packers
head coach Mike Sherman joins us and the Beacon Plumbing
hot line from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Mike, what was Mike
Holmgren's offense in the nineteen nineties for in the time
compared to what it was had been in the eighties?

Speaker 2 (10:52):
How did he bring the Bill.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
Walsh football style, the offensive, the short passing game, the
ball control passing game as a substitute for the run
on How did Mike Congran take that and move it
forward into the nineteen nineties and beyond.

Speaker 4 (11:05):
You think, well, Coach holmans always was evolving, you know,
a year and a year out. We would do projects,
and we would do studies and study what the league
was doing. And then you'd always want to find you'd
always tell you what he liked, and he didn't waste
any time to make sure that was at the top
of the list. On your new plays to put in.

(11:26):
But you know he studied the tape and and advanced
us forward. As far as I know, we were always
h a West Coast offense, and we evolved more into
it too, more into an eye formation maybe than on
first and second down than split backs like Coach Walsh did.
But the players were relatively the same type of plays.

(11:48):
The players were different. We truthfully had a fullbacker, really
good one, and so we were able to do some
nice strong eye formation run game and which you know,
coach would be to have thrown the football. But the
run games certainly played well. And when we were in
the Super Bowl.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
How did you as a headcat you went on, of
course to be in two thousand after one season as
a Seahawks offensive coordinator. Well, first I should even ask,
let me ask this, what was it like to be
an offensive coordinator for Mike Holmgren when Holgren's.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
Calling the plays here in Seattle?

Speaker 1 (12:19):
What responsibilities did you had and what did you just
have to yes or everything?

Speaker 2 (12:23):
On game day?

Speaker 4 (12:25):
Well, yeah, unless we were getting beat by somebody really bad,
like Tampa Bay had a number and we were down
by twenty five thirty points or something like that, and
he turned it over to me. At that time, I
had no problem with me calling the place. But yeah,
eventually he let me do more and more. And heck,
I wasn't in the league more than for a year

(12:45):
or so. Man, I don't playing with hold the back
at that point. But when he did turn it over,
you know, I appreciate it, and he was able to,
you know, get my own ideas out on the field,
hopefully hopefully moving the ball down the field.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
And then when you became a head coach, Mike Sherman,
how did you pattern yourself after what you learned from
Mike Homeran how to run an entire team?

Speaker 4 (13:11):
Well, I asked him before I left, you know, I
need some advice, Give me some advice and bought how
to do this job, because I'll never forget. I mean,
it was pretty rapid fire that I was sitting in
a chair that was occupied by him and Vince Lombardi.

Speaker 3 (13:27):
Uh, and so I remember.

Speaker 4 (13:30):
I remember after the day of being introduced as a
new head coach of the Green Bay Packers, sitting up
in my office at the end of the day and everybody.
Ron Wolfer and his wife left and all the coaches
were gone and so forth and up there by myself,
And I remember saying to myself, what do I do?

Speaker 3 (13:46):
Now?

Speaker 4 (13:46):
You know, it's okay, You're gonna get put a stab together. So, uh,
that's probably the hardest part, trying to find the right guys.
And I know I'm drifting on you, but trying to
find the right guys to uh.

Speaker 3 (13:59):
To man up and and coach these players.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
What kind of dog you have.

Speaker 4 (14:06):
That's a prince king Charles Cavalier.

Speaker 3 (14:10):
Oh, yeah, yeah. What's his dog?

Speaker 2 (14:14):
What's his name?

Speaker 3 (14:15):
Oscar? Oscar? Yeah, Oscar?

Speaker 4 (14:18):
You used to have a dog, used to have a
dog named Felix.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
Felix.

Speaker 1 (14:24):
Felix and Oscar Felix and formerly Oscar and Mike Sherman
joining us from Cape Cod, massachusetsuting to Beacon Plumbing Hotlan,
a ninety three point three k JRFM coach.

Speaker 5 (14:32):
Maybe you can shed some light on some specific moments,
maybe even decisions from coaches career. Coach Holman's career that
you believe solidify his legacy in the NFL and NFL
coaching history.

Speaker 4 (14:44):
Well, you're talking about it. We're talking twenty five years ago.
Seventy year old Man recollect twenty five years ago.

Speaker 3 (14:50):
I'm going to be honest with your expectations a little bit.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Come on, Mike, you're not that old. You and I
are almost protege ades contemporary.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
Yeah, but I forget the question, coach.

Speaker 5 (15:04):
Just give me some insight on who he was off
the field. Then how was he off the field, because
you mentioned that earlier, but going to detail on how
he was with you off the field and your impact
and his impact on your life.

Speaker 3 (15:16):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (15:16):
He had a presence about him that was unique to
him that I don't remember being around any other coach
that had that presence. When he walked in a room,
everybody sat up straight, and not because he's going to
rip anybody's butt, but it just it was just to
respect that they everybody had for him, And he didn't
really demand it. He just accepted it as it came,

(15:37):
and it came when he walked in the room to
do a meeting you, everybody was listening and everybody was
taking notes. So I remember asking him when when I
was getting ready to leave Seattle, you know, some advice,
And I thought it was very simple, because he was
he really liked simplicity. He didn't like confusion. He wanted

(15:59):
to us to be kept simple for the players, and
I think the players appreciated that.

Speaker 3 (16:03):
You know, where Andy Reid and.

Speaker 4 (16:05):
Myself we're trying to go out and try to recreate
a whole new offense. You know, Mike would keep us
on track and say, you know, he would tell me
when I give him an idea. This is his favorite
line without ripping me. He say, hold that thought, you know,
and I and I tell him the next next meeting,
I say, I'm still holding that thought, coach.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
You want one more week. Just hold the thought for
another week.

Speaker 4 (16:27):
You know, and then another week, then another week before
you know it. Every time I see him, I say,
I'm still holding that though.

Speaker 5 (16:34):
I can definitely saying that he's probably still holding telling
you to hold that thought today.

Speaker 4 (16:39):
But but but but The thing about Mike, the advice
he gave me, which I've held truth to to this day,
is just he said, be yourself, don't try to be
somebody else. And he was trying to tell me don't
be me, you know, I think that's what he is.
The message he was saying was don't try to be
because just because as we won, don't be me. Be

(17:02):
yourself and let that come out and I thought that
was the best advice I've ever received him anybody in
regard to being a head football coach.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
Having said that, Mike Sherman on the Beacon Plumbing Hothline
from Cape Cod having said that, Mike, what was it
like to replace Mike Hongrin? I mean, he's the only
coach since Vince Lombardi to win a Super Bowl in
Green Bay at the time. And what was it like
to succeed in his home groun way outside the stadium
you worked at? Was there a shadow there that you
tried to escape or was that a factor at all

(17:32):
in what your day to day life there?

Speaker 3 (17:35):
I really wasn't.

Speaker 4 (17:36):
I never tried to compare myself to Mike, and that
would be a fair comparison and unfair of me, because
he was he is a unique individual. And UH, tell
you the good thing, good story about Mike is, you
know when he walked in the room, everybody stood up,
I mean everybody sat up straight and paid attention and

(17:56):
so forth and so on. He just commanded such respect
and uh, and he and he was you know, there'd
be times when he'd.

Speaker 3 (18:04):
Be right on here and in loud, and he'll.

Speaker 4 (18:11):
Get very angry at times if things weren't right, and
then there's other times he's joking around, laughing, and so
from and so on. And I mentioned something about the snack.
Tom Levart was a line coach. You need a great
line coach. Uh, and uh he used to He used
to get mad at me because I ran the scout
team and then i'd take parade and maybe stopping a

(18:32):
play or two, and and he'd come up to me
and grab me and pull me aside and said, listen,
just get us to the snack without him losing it,
all right, And so yeah, then I'd just let the
place run and then they would have success, and they
would have a hap' come into the room and hey,
good red zone today.

Speaker 3 (18:51):
Yeah, coach, that's pretty good.

Speaker 4 (18:53):
We didn't know I sent all the players in the
opposite direction of but uh, but when we talked about
just get to the snack, well, Saturday night before the games,
you know, we had a snack and and I used
to look forward to that so much to sit down
with him, and he was totally relaxed and just telling

(19:14):
telling different types of stories about his career, things that
happened with him or things that might have happened on
the field or whatever. But that was the favorite part
when I was his assistant coach or I should even
say coordinator, that that was. That was one of the
best times we would a lot of us. It wasn't
just me, it was a couple.

Speaker 3 (19:34):
Of the guys. We really really loved that time.

Speaker 4 (19:36):
Is the snack would start at nine o'clock and then
we would sit there till about nine thirty ten o'clock
just with him telling stories. You know, he was very
relaxed in many ways for the game. I don't think
he sweated it half as much as I.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
Did, but.

Speaker 3 (19:55):
He had reasons to have that type of confidence.

Speaker 2 (19:57):
He was in the barn by that point.

Speaker 1 (19:59):
Mike Herman, we really appreciate taking the time for your
home in Cape Cod. Get back to Oscar and your
family and enjoy your weekend and your winner. And thanks
a lot for your insights on ninety three point three KGr.

Speaker 3 (20:09):
Thank you so you have a good weekend.

Speaker 1 (20:11):
You as well. Mike Sherman. He replaced a year after
Mike Hongrean became the Seahawks coach. Mike Sherman was the
offensive coordinator for his nineteen ninety nine Seahawks season, Danny
became the Packers head coach, replacing and succeeding Mike Hongren.
Mike Sherman took that team to three consecutive and See
North titles. They went to the playoffs four straight years

(20:33):
after Mike holmgrean no Easy Feet replaced him, he still
had Mike Sherman still had Brett Favre in Green Bay.
He tells us that he's a kind man, he's a teacher,
but he could also be Mount Vesuvius. In Mike Sherman's
words as well, just get the snack time. That's a
good credo for all of us in life. Let's just
get the snack time. That our thanks to Mike Sherman

(20:53):
from Cape Cod as we recollect about Mike Hongran and
his coaching career. Up next to read back your text
four nine four five one. I appreciate all the cond
text I'm getting for our final show here, the Great
Bell Show with Christopher Kid. We'll read back your text next.
On ninety three point three KJRFM. If you're listening to
your one and only home for the Super Bowl. Super Bowl,

(21:15):
make us your number one pre set in your car
and on the new iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (21:19):
Now back to Greg Bell and Christopher Kidd on Sports
Radio ninety three.

Speaker 3 (21:23):
Point three Super Bowl k j R f M.

Speaker 2 (21:33):
I'm gonna miss this music. You're in this every day,
every weekday. At eleven thirty. We never did get to
play Bigie Knights on the radio.

Speaker 1 (21:41):
I don't know how to possibly pull that off.

Speaker 2 (21:45):
Yeah, that's a failure. Ten months in this seat and
I could not do it. The poorn music sufficed.

Speaker 1 (21:51):
I think I remember when they said, fine, Chris, you
I remember when we asked the question should we get
rid of it?

Speaker 5 (21:59):
And of people in the text line, I say get
rid of it? And you know what I did? I
did not get rid of it, and now people love it,
you know, I guess. I guess it worked out. Kind
of speaking of porn music from the two five three,
our guy, Keith, can you please leave the porn text
music if possible? I don't know. We'll see.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
It's kind of Greg and I steing I might have
to switch it up. That's your thing, man.

Speaker 5 (22:22):
You found it, but I found a place to put
it and it rocked, and you were like, you know
what this works? So I don't I think I might
have to just find something else. This is the Greg
Bell Show with Christopher Kidd. Funky porn music. You need
to get like John Holmes as your co host this. Yeah,
you're probably right. Porn star g in the building. That's

(22:46):
a good nickname for you. There you go the day.
My kids are listening. Hopefully the wife's listening. Porn star
excuse me?

Speaker 2 (22:57):
Which they coming in the Ousehold? All right, where do
you want to start? Because there's a.

Speaker 5 (23:01):
Lot of about the home grown stuff. Well that's buried it.
I'm having to search and find it. It's really kind
and a lot of kind. Note I truly appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (23:11):
Like I said, my task when Richmore hired me ten
months ago was interact with the listeners and we really
really tried.

Speaker 2 (23:18):
To champion that. We opened up the phone lines.

Speaker 1 (23:20):
We did text throughout the show, but always at this time,
I think we're the only show on the station that
opened up phone lines and had a constant text time.

Speaker 2 (23:29):
I mean maybe may Or he has his text line?
Is it every day at the same time? Okay, every day?
Maybe I'm wrong.

Speaker 1 (23:34):
And then Softy and Holiday they have a different like computerize, Yeah, they.

Speaker 5 (23:38):
Do with textimonials, but everyone has their own way of
doing it. This was just our funky porn way mentioned
home Grin. Yes, So outside of all the love you
guys are showing Greg, he appreciates, as he just alluded to.
We did get some other texts because like ninety nine
of them are all about the love Greg as you
should receive.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
So we'll go from the two five to three.

Speaker 5 (24:01):
Did what happened in Cleveland with Jim Brown and how
Hongrim was dismiss have any effect in the Hall of.

Speaker 1 (24:05):
Fame voting Some voters may think of that. I do think,
and I think Dave Bowen brought up a really good point, Chris,
that the national voters didn't cover home Groun day to day,
so they didn't see his humanity.

Speaker 2 (24:18):
They didn't see the.

Speaker 1 (24:20):
All of Mike Congren, that he was more than a
football coach, more than an offensive play caller, more than
a groomer of quarterbacks. He really impacted live Matt Hasselbeck
talked about yesterday on the End Show.

Speaker 2 (24:32):
He couldn't believe and still to this day uses the lessons.

Speaker 1 (24:35):
He couldn't believe Mike Congren taught those people how to
be men, and that Holgren and team meetings, will say, Hey,
you're going to be fathers someday, You're going to be
husbands and be leaders in life. And he said that
Mike Matt Hasselbeck, when now coaches high school football, including
his sons, says that he still uses those learnings that
Mike Hongran gave him and that he thinks is some

(24:56):
of his biggest legacy and Hall of Fame. Voters don't
know that or don't get we don't appreciate that.

Speaker 2 (25:01):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
Again, I told you to top the show. I would
fail to explain why he didn't get in yesterday from.

Speaker 5 (25:07):
The two o six, Greg, is there any sentiment that
Homegrim was snubbed because he's not on television unlike the
Dungee Yeah, Cower vote voters reward ESPN appearances and punish
people like Hunger.

Speaker 2 (25:22):
Maybe, yeah, there is, and that is some of it.

Speaker 1 (25:25):
Tony Dungee a friend of a lot of people in
the media, which is work on NBC post career, Dick
Vermeil for that matter, who was a broadcaster for ABC
in college and pro football, and Bill Kawer and the
CBS NFL Today Show. Would you know the live on
the set of the NFL today getting the director of
the Pro Football Hall of Fame to present him with

(25:46):
the news that he was inducted. In the theatrics behind that,
I think there's something there's more than zero of a
factor in that.

Speaker 2 (25:54):
Yeah, I do.

Speaker 5 (25:57):
From the two five to three, I think Jerry Poto
said the voters were actually doing home Run a favor
by not letting him get elected to the Hall of Fame.
Stanton was quoted as saying, look at all the money
saved and traveled expenses. Oh boy, we won't talk about
manners two five to three on the topic not named Mike,

(26:18):
Hunger and the Kraken are still struggling.

Speaker 2 (26:20):
From the two five to three, Yeah, it's it's.

Speaker 5 (26:23):
Been a yeah because Greg hints at it earlier on
the show with headlines like they lost again?

Speaker 2 (26:30):
How many? How many games they got left?

Speaker 3 (26:32):
Greg?

Speaker 2 (26:32):
Twenty six?

Speaker 1 (26:32):
Twenty six games and they're eleven points out the last
playoff spot.

Speaker 5 (26:36):
That mountain is seeming very very tall, and I don't
know if they're gonna be able to climb that. So all right,
four to two five? Who has led to ensure that
NFL harm voters have the full picture of Mike Homegron.
It's unimanageable that pro football writers who know Mike's resume
credentials could not vote him in.

Speaker 3 (26:58):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (26:58):
Mike Sander, my predecessor news tribute now with the Athletic,
a frequent guest on this station is has stated the
case for Mike Congran in the past. I think he
did again this year in front of the voters. They
fifty voters get together in one big hotel conference room
every year and they hash all this out over a
day or two at the Super Bowl, and they review

(27:19):
it well before that before the finalists list, but they
actually meet at the super Bowl for a couple of
days and vote in person. And Mike Sando has given
the case before obviously that not everyone is on board,
and a grand he shaid, Mike, I know thought it
was going to be this year.

Speaker 2 (27:39):
Did Yeah, he did.

Speaker 1 (27:40):
But Mike's in the room and he had a good
feel for the votes and the voting and the thinking
of the voters, and he thought it was going to
happen too. So yeah, Let's let me just say. A
guy in the room, one of the fifty voters, was
surprised that Mike Congeran didn't get.

Speaker 2 (27:54):
In from the two five to three.

Speaker 5 (27:56):
Maybe Greg can explain, but Ken someone explained the purpose
of the Hall of Fame if you don't put in
coaches who have turned around multiple franchises, developed Hall of
Fame quarterbacks and won Super Bowls. Yet you put people
in like dig from Ill.

Speaker 1 (28:13):
Yeah, well said in the Quarterbacks in the Coaching Tree,
Andy Reid, John Gruden what he did with Matt Hassebick.
Remember the story of just a Matt hassebec, as Hassek
himself explained yesterday, a fourth string quarterback after his first
season at Green Bay nineteen ninety nine, Mike Congrean traded
not only traded for Matt Hassebok, but made him his
starter here in Seattle. Matt Haswok didn't even get invited

(28:35):
to the Combine. It's a six round draft pick because
Mike Congran told Andy Reid to go out and find
a quarterback he liked. And the quarterback he liked he
saw in film was Matt Hassebuck and Hasswik said he
was shocked that he got drafted.

Speaker 2 (28:48):
Didn't expect it because he didn't go to the Combine.

Speaker 1 (28:51):
And not only did Mike Congren have Andy Reid go
out and find him. Then Mike Hongren traded for Matt
Hasselbeck and made him a three time Pro Bowl quarterback
in a Super Bowl co back, the first one the
Seahawks have ever had. That alone is pretty noteworthy, on
the top of the fact that he coached Joe Montana,
he coached Steve Young, He turned Brett Farvan, as Dave
Bawling pointed out, a wild man in in Atlanta. I'm

(29:13):
throwing interceptions all over the league into a Hall of
Fame quarterback in Green Bay.

Speaker 5 (29:18):
Yeah, I think this last one is fitting four to
two five our guy, Joel greg Well, any Seattle Sports
teams make the playoffs in twenty twenty five, don't worry.

Speaker 2 (29:28):
I'll wait because the answer is no. Wow, you don't
think so? I think so? All right, give me the
team's greg Or team. Excuse me, I think the Mariners
is gonna make the playoffs.

Speaker 5 (29:36):
What about the Seahawks now back to back season, even
with Mike McDonald.

Speaker 1 (29:43):
Thirteen months before the next season ends. No, I don't
think the Seahawks are a playoff team, but they aren't
going to be the team that they're gonna be in
twenty twenty five yet let's see what they do with
the offensive line. I will say on my way out
the door that I think Gino Smith is going to
be the quarterback normally for twenty five, but twenty six.

Speaker 2 (29:58):
I've stated why.

Speaker 1 (29:59):
I think k Metcalf is going to be the next
one hundred million dollars seahawk.

Speaker 2 (30:03):
I've stated why.

Speaker 1 (30:05):
And I think that Clint Kubiak is going to run
the ball because that's the whole reason Mike McDonald hired him.
And therefore I think Kenneth Walker would be a thousand
yard back. Again, Please be healthy and I health. That's right,
health included.

Speaker 2 (30:17):
And that alone will make Gino Smith a better quarterback.

Speaker 1 (30:21):
I think all of that, but I also think none
of it will matter unless the offensive line is better.

Speaker 2 (30:26):
And I don't know what that offensive line is yet.

Speaker 5 (30:28):
I'm gonna call you and I to go play the
right guard and I might play right tackle.

Speaker 1 (30:32):
You know, those who knows three six il ask why
are you leaving? They missed at the top of the show.
The people who are in charge of the station decided
that they're going to do a different approach. They they say,
I'm a content guy, and I am I'm a sports writer.
Sports journalist and they want someone who with more experience.
He's coming in from the East Coast. He's been in
the business for a long long time. And it'll, like assume,

(30:55):
because it's not content guy, which I am, it's going
to be more entertainment guy.

Speaker 2 (30:59):
So whatever.

Speaker 1 (31:01):
So that's ten to one is going to be the
new Guys Show. Chris will be the producer for it.
Ian Farness will move from one to three, Dave Softy
Maller and Dick Fan will remain from three until seven.
That's how it's going to go down. I have a
ton of respect for all of you and appreciation for
all of you. I've learned a ton about this business,
about how to convey my thoughts on live radio to you,

(31:24):
thanks to your text and your feedback.

Speaker 2 (31:27):
Thanks to all of you, I do appreciate it. I'll
be around.

Speaker 1 (31:31):
I'll still be on seven AM with Chuck and Buck.
I'm told you, I'm still going to the Army Navy
Game ever December to represent KJR. This year it'll be
in Baltimore, and I'm still taking Army in the under.
As Joel points out, I appreciate that the mayor of
Maple Valley Ian Forness is somewhere. If he's not here,
he'll be on the phone with me. Next on ninety
three point three KJRFM. Welcome back to the Greg Belt

(32:01):
Show with Christopher Kidd on ninety three point three KJFM,
the last one before there's a change. On Monday, the
mayor and Maple Valley Ian Forness will be going from
one until.

Speaker 2 (32:11):
Three back to his two hour spot because he deserves that.
Busy man. Yeah, God, someone's happy about this.

Speaker 6 (32:18):
You're happy to not have you around anymore, my friends.

Speaker 2 (32:20):
I'll be around, but yeah, we won't do that.

Speaker 6 (32:22):
Actually, and I.

Speaker 7 (32:23):
Should say that you are now that you're not doing
a show before me every day. If I call you
to come on my show, will you do some car
you would not that you wouldn't before anyway.

Speaker 2 (32:32):
I always said yes.

Speaker 7 (32:34):
Yeah, you always said yes. But it was like, Okay,
you just got off the air like an hour ago.
Can you jump back on with me right now? Because
I need to see Howckey ins.

Speaker 2 (32:39):
Yeah, i'd be happy to do that, of course. You
know that.

Speaker 7 (32:42):
You're absolutely happy to hear You're still doing stuff with us,
and we'll be a big part of what we do.
And it's nice, nice to have you on board. And
it's been a fun few months listening to you and
and Chris and and all that.

Speaker 2 (32:54):
So I appreciate that, Thank you very much. It's been fun.

Speaker 1 (32:58):
I've learned a ton newspaper guy, learning my way through
radio and getting the opportunity in a top twelve market.
I'm honored and blessed, and I appreciate all of you
for your help, and every one of you rich.

Speaker 6 (33:08):
More the last time, I mean, I need vacation.

Speaker 2 (33:12):
Taking whatever you want. I'm around. You know that, I know,
at least until July I'm around.

Speaker 6 (33:18):
Yeah, I know, and then it gets a little busy
for you and stuff. But you know, you've done a
hell of a job.

Speaker 7 (33:23):
It is interesting, how like when you dip your toes
in the waters of a different medium in our business,
and you know, some are able to do it, some aren't.
You were able to do it, which is awesome, you
know not. I think there's a lot of people that
sit there and think, oh, I'm gonna do sports radio.
I'll just sit there and talk and interview a couple
of people, and the way you go, and then like
three minutes.

Speaker 6 (33:42):
In they run out of content. Am I going to
say what am I gonna do?

Speaker 7 (33:46):
But you did, You did a great job, did hell
of a job and and again excited you're still gonna
be around with us?

Speaker 1 (33:51):
Well, thank you. I tried to be myself whatever that
was worth. And I appreciate everyone who.

Speaker 7 (33:55):
Else you know that you know what, go though, Greg that, honestly,
that's probably the most important thing in this business that
I've learned over the years.

Speaker 6 (34:02):
It's just be you, and you were very much you. You
did a unique show.

Speaker 7 (34:06):
You you tackled topics or brought up stories that were cool,
that were feel good. You know, the young kid from
Philadelphia that helps save his sister, all that kind of
like those are the things that are It's different, you know.
And people always ask, you know, like who's who's what?
And I said, Softy's always want that comes?

Speaker 6 (34:22):
Is that really?

Speaker 7 (34:22):
No, that's him, Like that's who he is, like a
thousand percent, one hundred percent of the time, that's who
he is.

Speaker 6 (34:27):
I hope. I'm you know real, you.

Speaker 7 (34:29):
Are very real and are very real on the radio
and and and that's the most important thing.

Speaker 2 (34:34):
I appreciate that.

Speaker 1 (34:35):
Yeah, it's not for everyone, I understand, and I don't know,
some people may not like it, but it was so
I was I couldn't be a shuck and jive Carnival Barker,
just not me.

Speaker 2 (34:44):
So I wasn't. I decided at the very beginning, I
can't do that, and I won't.

Speaker 6 (34:48):
We have one of those he starts at three o'clock.

Speaker 2 (34:51):
What do you have going on today? I'm right over
that because it's not wrong.

Speaker 3 (34:56):
I know.

Speaker 6 (34:58):
I love the guy to death.

Speaker 7 (34:59):
That's just who we oh man, that's and that's we've
got him and and but luckily we only have one
of him. All right, Yeah, we've got Stoll Comic Casino today.
It's the day before, the day before the game, right,
we're here today. We're up here a lot. They're a
huge they're a title sponsor of our show. So I'm
thrilled to be at Comic Casino today. We'll go through
some prop bets a little bit later, but there's they
have thirty pages of prop bet thirty buddy, like.

Speaker 2 (35:21):
I meant to get at around to some of those.
Maybe you can mention them that they're pretty wild.

Speaker 7 (35:25):
They're a wild but yeah, well we'll get into that.
And just I mean, first, uh brought the top of
the show. We're gonna check in with Robbie Tobeck today
or I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

Speaker 3 (35:35):
No.

Speaker 7 (35:36):
Robbie is at one twelve twenty, Danny O'Neill rob Robbie
at one Great co sell at two one twenty. Today
we'll play a bunch of sound from earlier this week,
holmegrim from this morning, halfleback from yesterday. I want to
pay tribute to Mike today. Honestly, we're all angry, but
I wanted I want to pay tribute to him more.

(35:58):
But I'll have some anger in the first segment. Have
to everyone has it whatever it is, part of what
it is. I mean, it's a flawed system. But aren't
they all right? So that's true. So but yeah, busy show,
fun show coming up on the day before the day
before the super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (36:10):
So cool. That'll be Thanks for everything, man, you know,
hang around well, hey, buddy, who are still yes?

Speaker 6 (36:16):
Going anywhere? Right? I'll thank me. Let me know if
you do.

Speaker 2 (36:20):

Speaker 7 (36:22):
No, I mean I've missed you enough traveling on the road.
Great times, oh my god, some great times. And we'll
find time to do that now and uh in a
way we go. But great job by you. The last
eleven months or so.

Speaker 2 (36:33):
But thank you, sir, appreciate that. Ian forness is that?
Oh I never gave you a keyword for the hour.
It's credit.

Speaker 1 (36:38):
