Last night, the NBA kick off with its play in games,

(02:02):
and let's just say they did not disappoint. We both
sat here yesterday and thought that the Orlando Magic would
be the team that would defeat the Hawks. That's exactly
what happened as the Hawks got me one.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Twenty to ninety five. We talked you, Mark.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
You had brought up the information about the guard play
and how big those guards were going to be for
the Orlando Magic against Trey Young. That happened. Steph Curry
comes out and is Chef Curry like along with playoff
himmy Jimmy Butler went out and did his thing. But

(02:42):
I want before we get into the Warriors matchup, let's
go with the first game. Orlando Magic comes out and
they go on an epic run early. Early in the ballgame,
they outscored the Hawks thirty two to seven team in
the first quarter, and the Hawks tried to make it

(03:03):
happen and they won the next two quarters, but then
that fourth quarter they just opened it up and just
took off against this team. Trey Young played all forty
minutes forty played forty minutes in the ball game, but
he just really couldn't get going because of the guard play.
But Pablo Vanchero he was okay. But it was Wendell

(03:28):
Carter getting second chance buckets and being able to push
the envelope on that basketball court. Another player that played
out standing was Cole Anthony. Cole Anthony coming off the bench,
only played twenty minutes, but was plus thirty two on
the floor, and of course he finished with twenty six points.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Listen I'm telling you those guards are big, they're aggressive,
and they give fits to teams that have other guards,
smaller guards.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
You're gonna have problems with Orlando. Yep, Orlando is a
physical team. Franz Wagner.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
He he did Okay, he didn't have a great night, no,
but but he was he was a force in rebounding
and facilitating offense.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
But my player, my player of the game was Wendell Carter.
Wendell Carter was hustling all over the place, extra passes,
being able to get some blocks, being aggressive on the block,
getting getting yes and definitely making some plays. And you
forget too that Corey Joseph is the starting point guard

(04:40):
for them on that team. So Texas was well represented.
But Cole Anthony was the story ten of seventeen from
the field, four to nine from three point landing, he
has six assists and as I said, he was plus
thirty two with his time on the floor, and you
really can't do much with that. And you look across

(05:03):
and you look at what Atlanta wasn't able to do. Yeah,
Trey Young had twenty eight points, but he was niggatve minus.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Twenty two on the floor when he was out.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
There, so they got a tough, tough matchup to try
to stay in the playoffs. The Orlando Magic is now
getting ready to take on the Boston Celtics as they
moved into that seventh spot, and Orlando has to I
mean Atlanta has to play again.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
But I wanted to ask you this, Mark, because.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
You were talking about the guard play and how physical
and how big they were going to be, and this
morning you were talking about how the matchup against Boston.
You believe that it's going to be a tough matchup
for Orlando, I mean for Boston against them.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
But both the Boston's guards are really good. Derick White
and Holiday Is they both were on the Olympic team
because of their defensive and offensive compliment. When they play

(06:16):
against Orlando, Cole Anthony six five Black, Anthony Black six
seven guards and they played physical. Did you see at
least twice Trey Young got caught up with Black and

(06:37):
they were about to fight. Yeah, they had to be
pulled apart twice because they antagonize.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
They take you off your game.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
And that's not counting what you just mentioned that court
Joseph is a briink. He's gonna be a head coach
in NBA. He's gonna be a Jason Kidd type guy.
He's brilliant, he's well respected, he's travel he's played.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
For ten teams.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Whenever somebody gets hurt, that starting point guard against hurt,
first thing they do is is Corey Joseph available because
he can play in any system, So there's nothing that
he hasn't seen. The guard player at Orlando is not elite,
but it's right there and it's better than most teams.

(07:30):
And I think Boston is going to have a big
problem with that. It's going to force Brown and Tatum
to have to score thirty points each and with Pablo
ban Cerro scoring thirty points. And if you can get
the bigs to step up at Orlando, they can give
Boston problems. And they're one of the teams this year

(07:55):
that beat Boston in the season games. They played Bass
three times this season they beat him twice. Yeah, Boston
got that championship pedigree. So we'll see how this matchup happens.
The Warriors will now go on to play the Rockets
after their victory yesterday against the Memphis Grizzlies, and the

(08:18):
game was won twenty one to one. Sixteen, But there
was a play in the game late in the ballgame
that they didn't have the ability to get the ball in,
so it changed the dynamic of the game. But let's
just be honest. Steph Curry what he's been able to do.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
Playoff, Jimmy getting an opportunity to go out there, and
Jimmy Butler believes that he really really likes this Warriors team.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
I think any team has a chance.

Speaker 4 (08:55):
For when I wanted to eat that, I.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
Know that.

Speaker 5 (09:00):
Every team I changed the steps on the team, so.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
I need to play Robin. That's when Batman and.

Speaker 5 (09:08):
I don't know who else is, you know, the Dylan, Jelo,
two Face, Joker and Raymer and everybody else in the
restern Conference, But we have a dy Engine.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
I like that's an area two face the Joker. I
like that over there with Denver. I like the confidence.
You know, any team that I'm own is gonna be good. Yeah,
And any team Steph on has an opportunity to win. Well,
now this is going to be the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies
now have moved into the eighth spot and now they

(09:42):
have to play the winner of tonight's matchup between the
Kings and the Mavericks. We'll talk a little bit more
about that, because I want you to hear from what
was said in the meeting about Luca and the trade
from Nico Harrison. You know, everybody always wants to talk
about Nico, but here's what was said about Nico told

(10:04):
the media. Because no phones, no cameras, but the media
was allowed to be in this q and A with Nico.

Speaker 4 (10:10):
Because, Tim, you just got out of a closed door
meeting with general manager Nico Harrison.

Speaker 6 (10:15):
There were no cameras allowed, but you were there.

Speaker 7 (10:18):
So what can you tell us about what happened and
what you heard?

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Howdy Malika?

Speaker 5 (10:23):
Hey.

Speaker 8 (10:23):
Rick Welts, the new CEO of the Mavericks, was also there.
He really wanted to discuss potential plans for a new
arena in Dallas next decade. But folks just kept going
back to Pepper Nico with questions about this trade that
he made, the Luka Donca steel, and Hey, Nico doubled down,
he tripled down, he quadrupled down.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
I could go on.

Speaker 8 (10:42):
I ran out of fingers counting how many times that
he said defense wins championships. So he's sticking with that. Now, Hey,
the Mavericks last year had the top defense in the
league for the final twenty games. You know, even in
the finals against the Celtics one oh nine point two
defensive rating that would have ranked second league last regular season.
They lost that series for other reasons. But that logic

(11:05):
maybe doesn't necessarily add up. Neither does this The Mavericks
owe their first round draft capital for deals they've made
to successfully build around Luca in twenty seven, twenty eight,
twenty nine, and thirty either outright or swaps. Nico Harrison
created what he calls a three to four year time
frame to be a championship contender. Obviously here one ruined
by injuries. I pushed back on the logic of that.

(11:27):
He just kept going back to the defense wins championships mantra.
Quite frankly, a lot doesn't make sense. But Nico made
it clear he does plan to be the general manager
of the Mavericks for the rest of his contract, which
has three years left.

Speaker 7 (11:44):
Okay, so he's saying that he's going to be the
general manager for the rest of that's.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
Funny to me because he said, my contract says three years.

Speaker 3 (11:50):
I'm here for three years.

Speaker 1 (11:51):
Ima call Um Clay I'm gonna call him, Clay, Don't
don't try to come over here and mess with me.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
I'm stinging. I got a question for you, yep.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
If you were offered four first round draft picks for
the number one pick in the draft this year, would
you take it? If you were offered four first round,
four first round pick, how would that even be possible?

Speaker 3 (12:14):
Though?

Speaker 2 (12:14):
Well, Dallas has five first round pick, five first round
not in.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
One season, but in the next.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
Well that's why the next three years, while Nico is there,
he can mortgage those five picks, five first round picks.
I would be willing to give all of my five
first round pick for the next three years for a
number one pick this year. And if it's gonna be that,
if you put Cooper Flag with Anthony Davis, they'll win

(12:44):
a championship.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
There's definitely something to think about.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
So we will continue the conversation a little bit later.
But coming up next, we're gonna hear more from coach
Steve Sarkisian from his press availability on Monday right here
on the morning kickoff.

Speaker 3 (12:59):
Don't go in anywhere, folks.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Coming up in the next segment, we will have Danny
Davis of the Austin, American statesman talking Texas baseball, Texas football,
and of course we'll ask him about some basketball conversation.
As THEWNBA Draft took place, no Texas Longhorns had decided
to enter the draft. So we'll see what's next for

(13:23):
Texas as they got some recruits, I mean some transfers
as well. But I want to hear from coach Steve Sarkjian.
There's so much that is going on with the NIL,
the conversation about NIL and what's next when it comes
to NIL, and so coach sark was asked about talking

(13:43):
to his players about NIL and talking to him about
their status, practice and so much more. But I want
you to hear him in his explanation about talking to
the players about NIL.

Speaker 9 (14:02):
Our situation is always evolving, right, I eventually have that
meeting with our players. I don't think I'm at that
space to have that meeting, right, And we've got another
portal window that's coming, great idea by us.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
We've got another.

Speaker 9 (14:16):
Free agency window that's about to happen, and so I
don't think I'm quite in that position to do that yet.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
But there'll come a time we have.

Speaker 9 (14:23):
That meeting where our focus has got to be on
the right things if they want to if they want
to play as good as football as they can play.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
And the reason why he's got to be careful about
those conversations and not truly be careful. But the transfer
portal window opened today, so players are now looking at
different job opportunities. There's a lot of conversation about who's
gonna jump in, who's not gonna jump in. We're gonna

(14:53):
have Chris Hummer of twenty four to seven sports on
next week to talk about the transfer portal. Who went
where one of the big news and who's going to
be impacted by that, and Sark continues to check the
status on that mark.

Speaker 3 (15:10):
How long is the portal open? I think a couple
of days.

Speaker 1 (15:14):
I think maybe even maybe a week, maybe a week
at the most at the most, and most of it happens,
you know obviously spring games, court, spring games and everything
else that's going on during that time.

Speaker 3 (15:27):
That's when people start to make their moves.

Speaker 1 (15:29):
So this would be the week today would be the
day that you start to see names trickling in throughout
the spring.

Speaker 3 (15:37):
But you also got to look at it.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
There's two portal windows, you know, there's one in the fall,
and there's one right now, and so Sark has been asked,
do you get a chance to really talk about each
player and talk about their status with the team before
any of this happens.

Speaker 9 (15:56):
I mean, it's no different than any other player on
the team.

Speaker 6 (15:58):
You know.

Speaker 9 (15:59):
We try to which how to communicate on a high
level of where they're at, where they can improve, what
we envision their journey looking like, short term and long term.
But again, two years ago, we were in the college
football playoff and Milik was our backup quarterback and he
felt like he had to go into the portal to
solidify a position because if he didn't go in, somebody

(16:21):
else was going to take that spot. And that's a
terrible position for a young man to be. In the
fact that he's worked since January with his team competing
to try to win a national championship. He started, I believe,
two games for us that fall, and then here we
are going to play a semi final game in the
Sugar Bowl against Washington and he has to leave his
team or he might lose a spot on another team.

Speaker 3 (16:43):
Like, none of that makes sense to me. It didn't
make sense to me.

Speaker 9 (16:46):
Then it doesn't make sense to me now, but that's
what we created. And so if we're going to do
anything to help the players and the student athletes and
help the programs, we've got to look at this model
and see where we can improve it and do it
in a way where there's some teeth involved, because if not,
there's just going to be another lawsuit and the whole

(17:06):
thing's going to fall apart again and we're going to
go back to square one. But communication, answer your question,
Communication is the.

Speaker 1 (17:13):
Key, and that's the other part of it, because what
he was alluding to in that conversation was talking about
Malik Murphy last year when he was in the transfer portal.
He cuts ready, they're battling to go to the playoff,
and then all of a sudden he has to leave
his team because if he doesn't, they're going to pull

(17:34):
that other offer from him and he's not going to
have a school to go to. So it's a unique
situation and it's one of those things that you continue
to look at and you say, how do you find
tune this? And to answer your question, the transfer portal
is open to day and it will go through Friday
to twenty fifth. So the twenty fifth is when the

(17:54):
transfer portal closes, and so Texas who has its Spring
Fling or the spring fan Day is the twenty sixth,
So guys are gonna have to make decisions before that.
So we'll find out going into that. But to answer
your question, is today through the twenty fifth.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
Well, I really do feel like coach sark has A
is at the pulse of it. The things that he says,
it makes you go wow, that makes all the sense
in the world. But like the structure of it is,
I feel like the problem with everybody why is there
two portals? Why is did the players have to make

(18:36):
a decision at a time when it's not gonna affect anything.
You can't wait another month, You can't wait another.

Speaker 3 (18:46):
Month to.

Speaker 2 (18:48):
You may wait till the summer, till wait till the
school is out and the season is over, and then
have people be able to make a decision. It just
it just seems like it's back words and that it
needs organization.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
Well that is the key, and that's why they are
having these meetings in Congress. They thought Congress was going
to jump in. Congress said nope, you made your bed.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
Where's the.

Speaker 1 (19:17):
Thought Congress was going to step in and try to
help put these things in there. And you know, the NCAAA,
the only thing they truly truly care about is college basketball.
That is the only thing that they really get paid for.
That We've talked about this before. Unless you're a lower
D one, D two, D three, the NCAA, they're not

(19:39):
even the ones giving you the trophy. You know, it's
a different The Seers Trophy or whatever it's called for.
The National Championship is not an NCAA trophy for football.
For basketball and everything else, you get that, that placuer,
you get that, you raise that deal up. It's anything

(19:59):
else football, you get the Crystal Ball. It's not by
the NCAA. So it's a little interesting when it comes
to that. But back on the football field, coach was
asked about the competition that's in practice and how everybody's competing.

Speaker 9 (20:15):
Well, I think competition is good for all of us,
right at any position, you know, whether it's running back,
whether it's tackle, defensive, tackle, kicker, punter. You know, competition
should bring out the best in everybody. And we've talked
about that in this program for years now. Right when
when you line up and you think man I need
to play well today because the guy behind me is

(20:36):
probably physically is good or better than me. He may
not know everything yet, but he's physically as good or better.
And I need to continue to perform to keep my job.
And if I'm behind that guy, I know I'm chasing
his heels. I know I'm physically better, but how quickly
can I learn it to maybe get in front of him.
The specialists are no different, right We want to make
sure that we can put as much confidence into them

(20:59):
that they can do the job, but get as much
pressure on them that they can perform when when that
when they're when they're when their best is needed in
critical moments. And I think we've created that, and I
think we're starting to see the best of especially at
punter right now that those guys are really bombing the ball.

Speaker 2 (21:15):
You know where they didn't say what that there's competition
linebacker and defensive end. Texas is loaded at at lineback,
at defensive end. There will be no competition with mister Collins.
Oh yeah, there would be no competition with miss Anthony Hill.

Speaker 3 (21:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (21:37):
Those guys, I mean, they've established themselves in this program
and it's the same thing with no competition that quarterback either.
So I mean they're they're gonna go out there and
battle and do everything they can to be able to.

Speaker 3 (21:49):
Get onto the field.

Speaker 1 (21:50):
But the answer is still you know, already written all
over their face. So we'll see what ends up happening.
But coming up next, we're gonna have Danny Davis of
the State. We'll get his thoughts on what's happening with
the transfer portal and what changes needs to be made,
and also Texas uses the transfer portal in women's basketball.

(22:11):
All right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred de zone. It's Wednesday, so that means
one thing. Our guy, Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman,
joins us every Wednesday throughout the year, and Danny number one,
good to see you at Sarks media availability as the
first one I've been able to go to in quite

(22:32):
some time. But of course we got to talk women's
basketball first, the Texas women and season comes up short. Obviously,
the big news was Rory decided that she was coming back.
The NBA Draft WNBA Draft happens. Obviously none of those
ladies were picked, But then you have to rebuild and

(22:53):
coach Vick Schaeffer went out in the portal and found
himself a couple of new players that are ready to
step in in the post.

Speaker 3 (23:03):
What are your thoughts on.

Speaker 1 (23:03):
The ones that Texas just got commitments from.

Speaker 5 (23:08):
Yeah, I mean, you know, Vick obviously came into the season.
When you lose Taylor Jones, I mean that's a starter,
that's your second leading that's your leading rebound, their second
leading scorer. You know, they talked about this season about,
you know, the two headed monster he had with Taylor
and Kyra down there, So obviously you want to replicate
that with Taylor no longer there. So you go out there,

(23:29):
you get Abria Cunningham, who Texas had been high on
when she was a high school recruit, even going back
to I think Karen Ashton gave her her second ever
scholarship offer and they continue that recruitment, was one of
her finalists, so they've had her eyes, their eyes on
her for a while. She played the mastive booker on
the TV e OSA when when they were all seniors
in high school. So there's a connection there. That's another

(23:51):
six to four players and kind of at least high
wise kind of philing with Taylor. It's actually kind of
see how they they play. Bria's pretty represented, is not
that great. She's going to get better at gravity, has
a pretty good field growth goal percentage. You kind of
expect that to kind of fill in the blanks there
and protect us to kind of protein that two headed monster.

(24:13):
The La Visa, the FAU transfer maybe more of a project.
She's you know, sixty six, but didn't really make that
big of an impactur in her freshman year, So maybe
that's more of a project for down the road, but
at least in the immediate you know, future Texas needed
someone the filling the tailor jones, and they got that
with a brief cunning end.

Speaker 2 (24:31):
Danny Hars brought up the newer players that are coming
to the forty Acres, what about I want to talk
about one that's already owned the forty Acres. Abby both year, like, uh,
is her injuries you know, dissipated and what do we
look to see from her in the fought next year?

Speaker 3 (24:54):
Aby?

Speaker 5 (24:54):
Abby's actually transferring. She jumped in the transfer portal. Her
and Jordanic Kdeo with the chip text players to get
in the transfer portal. So Abby is probably gonna be
looking for a new home, you know, unfortunate she has
not been able to play at Texas. She's a lifelong
Texas fan and you know that her and her family
wanted this. Her family traveled to all of Texas games
and so obviously this is a dream for her to work,

(25:15):
you know, play at Texas. Just didn't work out and
so hopefully she can find another school. Maybe it's it's
a little bit smaller where you know, the playing times
more immediate and she can find something with her basketball
feat because it just didn't work out of Texas, which
is probably unfortunate for all buddies involved.

Speaker 1 (25:30):
Yeah, but one of the people that is coming to
the University of Texas is Eleiah Krump. She is somebody
that Texas fans are really excited about. What is it
that she's going to on the surface bring to the
University of Texas.

Speaker 5 (25:47):
Well, if anyone saw that highlights on those circulating over
the weekend of her there's some basketball thing Adam Adam
Portland with her and the leaders shops are playing together.
It featured six highlights or seven highlights. Three of those
highlights of defensive highlights which Mick shafferd is gonna be
very happy about. And three of those highlights are her
knocking down three pointers, which Texas fans will be very
happy about. So Aliah's seems to be a versatile player,

(26:10):
probably play you know, two or three different positions for
this team. So that would be nice for you to
be able to slock her in multiple positions and she
can shoot the rock like that. Texas fans are gonna
be very very happy.

Speaker 1 (26:22):
Yeah, I saw the video and everybody was commenting right away.

Speaker 3 (26:26):
There's something that we need a three point.

Speaker 1 (26:28):
Shooter, like be patient, We'll be all right, Texas will
be just fine. We're talking to Danny Davis of the
Austin American States. Mean, you can follow them at Underscore
Danny Davis going to the football field, Danny. We got
a chance to talk to Sark on Monday, and a
lot of the questions were about transfer portal time which

(26:49):
opened today, and of course being able to retain a
lot of the players within the Texas program. And one
of the things that stood out to me was Sark said,
and so it seems to be a lot easier now
than it was a while back. And do you have
a sense of that as well, that now people understand

(27:09):
that Texas is getting a chance to develop a lot
of guys and you get a chance to go to
the next level.

Speaker 5 (27:16):
Yeah, I mean, I think Speed played it out perfectly
on Monday. You know, it's easy for him. If there's
a player who's impatient, or a player who you know
as a freshman doesn't want to sit, or someone wants
to know like why you know that things aren't happy immediately,
it's really easy to just look, Hey, look at Byron Murphy,
Look at Devandre Sweat, Look at Alfred Tallins, look at

(27:36):
Vernon Broughton. You know these sets of linemen who I
guess you know, Byron's kind of developed earlier, but those
last three the really developed into their fourth fifth year guys.
You look at some of the other positions where you
know guys. You know, whether it's with the Jordan Whittington
who took the long road because of injuries, or some
of these other guys she's blossomed late. You can be like, hey,
you don't have the star as a freshman. Sure is,

(27:57):
if you're worthy for the Star as a freshman, But
other guys came on late. Other guys developed in their
system and now they are in the NFL just like
an engager. So you know, I think Steve can sell
the track record that this program has of developing draft
picks over the last few years. If they get all
their combined guys, I'll be twenty five two year span,
and that's easier to sell to the recruit. You can

(28:19):
be like, this is what you have here at the
University of Texas. You know, go ahead and take your
shot in the dark and the transfer portal, or stick
around for a couple of years, win some games because
it also helps the Texas is winning a lot, you know,
maybe make a little nil moneies and Texas is doing
finding that area too, and you'll get ready for the
NFL drafting and they're able to, you know, put their
resume on the table and it stacks up pretty well.
I Miss, you're going to go to Georgia or you know,

(28:40):
one of these the type top tier schools. You know,
there aren't a lot of school out there that are
kind of able to matchter Texas has done the last
two or three.

Speaker 2 (28:48):
Years, Danny, Texas reached into the I guess free agent
on a portal for a wide receiver already.

Speaker 3 (28:57):
Is there any other positions of.

Speaker 5 (28:59):
Need I think Steve last week was talking about some
of the portal things that they probably need to get done.
They need to get done. You know, they need depth
of wede receiver. I think they need debt to tied
in with some of the you know, injuries that they
had there. And I think Steve knows even though that
they brought in three defensive linemens in the portal in
the early period, you can never have too many defensive linemens,

(29:20):
so a good defensive lineman finds his way into the portal.
I'm sure Technas will make a phone a phone call
there because you've never used many big bodies there in
the trenches, even though they have some, they have some
talents on the ross.

Speaker 3 (29:32):
Are there, Danny?

Speaker 1 (29:33):
Before we let you go, what is something that you're
going to be working on that is kind of keen
to what you've been trying to dial in on with
this Texas football team.

Speaker 5 (29:46):
I was really interested to hear Steve talk about the
specialists on Monday. I mean, all these guys are on scholarship.
They have two scholarship unders and two scholarship kickers, which is.

Speaker 3 (29:55):
Kind of a weird.

Speaker 5 (29:56):
You know, we've lived in areas where Texas where it's
just like taking guys off the street to fill those positions,
and you know it's all walk on and all that stuff.
But Texas team's very invested into devoted resources to those
positions and creating competition. So I think at that point
of the next week, I saw definitely right about that.
But those are composition battles that you don't really think

(30:18):
about during the spring that are going to be kind
of interesting going into the fall.

Speaker 1 (30:21):
Yeah, and that's going to be very important for Texas
to be able to knock that out of the park
because we know there were some times where it was
a little sketchy at best. As always, Danny, appreciate you
and I'll see you this weekend as Texas Baseball takes
on Auburn in another top ten matchup at the Dish.

Speaker 3 (30:40):
I'll see you tomorrow, buddy, Well service you leader.

Speaker 1 (30:43):
All right, there is Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman,
And when we come back, we'll talk a little bit
about the number one team in the land, Texas Baseball
as they got a midweek victory.

Speaker 6 (30:55):
Yay.

Speaker 1 (30:56):
We remember those times. Right here on the morning kickoff
on Sport Radio Am thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back
to the morning kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred The Zone. Good stuff by our God Danny
Davis of the Austin American Statesman. Oh yeah, as he
breaks it down always in his special type of way.

(31:17):
We also want to give you an opportunity to win
a pair of tickets right now to see Jason Aldean
August the sixteenth at.

Speaker 3 (31:25):
The Moody Center.

Speaker 1 (31:26):
All you got to do is get over to the
iHeartRadio app, search that red microphone, type in AM thirteen
hundred The Zone, and leave the word of the day Tractor.
Tractor is the word of the day for a chance
to win tickets to go see Jason Aldean August the
sixteenth at the Moody Center.

Speaker 3 (31:46):
Also, I want to.

Speaker 1 (31:47):
Talk a little bit about Texas Baseball. I got a big,
big weekend that is happening starting tomorrow. Obviously, you know
that it is the weekend of Eastern So the games
this weekend for Texas Baseball, their weekend series.

Speaker 3 (32:05):
Will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday. That's Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Speaker 1 (32:11):
Coming up this weekend as they will take on the
number eight ranked Auburn Tigers. This is a war Dog
on Eagle. They will be in town. This is another
Top ten matchup for the Texas Longhorns as they've had
big game after big game. The following weekend will be
Texas A and M coming into town, so you know

(32:34):
a lot of folks will be there. But last night,
the Texas Longhorns took on ut RGV for an eleven
to four victory, and they needed to get that big
win because it was the Galvaughan brothers facing each other.

Speaker 3 (32:50):
From UFCU Dish Faulk Field.

Speaker 9 (32:52):
It's the Texas long Horns against the ut RGV.

Speaker 1 (32:56):
The Caros and the Vicros came in and try to
try to give them a game, but Texas dominated from
the very beginning. First inning, it was three to nothings
second inning, they had scored four runs. In the third inning,
they scored two runs, then they scored two more in
the fifth and they end up winning the game eleven

(33:17):
to four. Will Gasparino continues to be hot at the play.
Ethan Mendoza, the starting second basement for the Texas Longhorns,
was out. Adrian Rodriguez stepped in and played some second base.
Casey Borba was back at third, but the story was
kye Bing and him his ability to come in go

(33:40):
five innings, five hit ball, one earned run with four strikeouts,
and he's somebody that is going to be an integral
part of the success of this team. He's a strike
thrower who's been trying to work his way through this
and now he's got an opportunity to throw a.

Speaker 3 (33:57):
Bunch of strikes and that was huge.

Speaker 1 (34:00):
Timbel Shustler was at the top of the lineup with
Mendoza being out. He went two for two with three
runs scored with two walks. He was on base every
single time, and that is important to be the guy
at the top of the lineup. Rylan Galvan, whose brother
Renee Galvan, was playing left field for UTRGV. So they

(34:23):
said that they had seventy people, seventy people in the
stands to watch this matchup as these two brothers faced
each other for the first time.

Speaker 3 (34:33):
That breaks the record. Yeah, Scotty, I'm the most.

Speaker 2 (34:37):
The most family members I've had at a place was
like thirty two thirty three.

Speaker 1 (34:42):
Yeah, seventy seventy people. Seventy people came to watch that
game between the two brothers and that.

Speaker 3 (34:49):
Can't be just immediate family. That had to be friends.

Speaker 1 (34:52):
They were on the same team. There's other players that
were part of their high school state champions team, so
it was family. It was friends and family. So it
is definitely something that they excited about, don't.

Speaker 3 (35:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (35:12):
So it was a big, big time matchup for them,
and it was another win on a Tuesday night game.
You know, Texas has had some struggles on Tuesday night
for just briefly, but they remained the number one team
and it was the first game as the number one
team in the land. And for Texas to go out
and get that victory is huge. But they're gonna got

(35:36):
They got a big, big series that's coming up this
weekend as Auburn comes into town. Auburn swept LSU last weekend,
and they just find ways to get it done. This
is a team that battles all the way through and
you start to look at what what happens throughout the season,

(35:57):
right Like everybody looks at Texas and they were like,
how are they going to handle the SEC? SEC is
tough every single night. What are they gonna be able
to do well? They came in, they were very consistent
and now They've worked their way not only being the
number one team in the land, obviously, with that, you
become the number one team in the SEC right now. Auburn, who,

(36:21):
like I said, just swept LSU. They had a tough
matchup last night against Jacksonville State.

Speaker 3 (36:27):
They won four to three, but I'm sure that they were.

Speaker 1 (36:30):
Already looking at this Texas matchup and trying to get
everything lined up. And as we've said before, don't always
look at the midweek as an end all be all.
The midweek is just that, it's a midweek game. You
go out there, you get some guys some work, You
get some guys that probably don't play a lot, they
get their opportunities to get those reps in.

Speaker 3 (36:50):
So it is a big, big weekend.

Speaker 1 (36:54):
For college baseball, especially in the SECRJE.

Speaker 2 (36:59):
I look at it and I think to myself, sometimes
in the midweek, the guys that really need the work
get the work. Yeah, but do you save your best
stuff knowing that, Okay, we got Auburn coming in here,
we gotta save our best guys. And I'm when you're

(37:23):
number twelve or fourteen, the target's not on your back.
But now that Texas has the number one ranking. It's
kind of like the Afro Samurai. You know, now everybody's
gunning for number one.

Speaker 1 (37:35):
Right, Well, I don't think, Well, you know, if you're
the University of Texas, you gotta get everybody's best shot
midweek or not. Just like you saw Texas State a
couple times that go out and get their relievers or
they're just like UTSA. They went and got their closer
to come in on a Tuesday right to get that victory.
But for Texas, I think a lot of it had

(37:56):
to do with just making sure because they're wounded right now,
they got hurt players. They got guys playing that are
really really banged up. And I'm not saying that every
team doesn't have that, but your starting second basement is
out with a shoulder injury, so you're you're sitting him
out because you're hopeful that he can play Thursday, Friday

(38:17):
and Saturday. Max Blou who was the Big twelve Player
of the Year, had hand surgery, so you're waiting for
him to get out. And oh yeah, Adrian rod Riegers,
who is probably one of your best hitters on the team,
is dealing with an hand injury and he had to
play second base last night, and if you watch the game,
which I did, you saw he got a couple pitches

(38:38):
that he normally hammers.

Speaker 3 (38:40):
He couldn't get there. He couldn't get there.

Speaker 1 (38:42):
So there's just the timing of everything needed to be
seen and so hopefully starting tomorrow because that's when the
big game starts, the big series starts against Auburn, everybody
can have just one more day of a little bit
more rest and now they'll get an opportunity to go

(39:03):
out there. We'll give you all the information about that.
Also next weekend we will be at the stadium because
guess what, fan fast time, folks, we'll talk about.

Speaker 3 (39:13):
That, and of course we're gonna tell you where we're
gonna be.

Speaker 1 (39:15):
For the NFL Draft next Thursday. You don't want to
miss it all coming up in the next hour right
here on the morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred, The.

Speaker 3 (39:26):
Zone thirteen hundred.

Speaker 1 (39:27):
This song welcome back to our number two of the
morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. Mike Harballhard's World's Strongest Man, WWE Hall of Famer,
the Mark Henry and of course we got our guy
Marcus on the boards and nour number one.

Speaker 3 (39:43):
We talked NBA playing games.

Speaker 1 (39:46):
Orlando spank the Hawks one twenty to ninety five. We
also talked about the Golden State Warriors with Steph Curry
and Jimmy Butler, Batman and Robin defeating the Memphis Grizzlies
won twenty one one sixteen. Both teams advanced to take
on the number two seeds in each conference. Golden State

(40:08):
will take on the My I mean Memphis, the Houston
Rockets Marcus's team and they will Orlando will take on
the Boston Celtics. We also heard from coach Sark about
transfer Portal and so much more. Danny Davis talked about
transfer Portal and the women's game in ut RGV came

(40:29):
in got handled by the number one team in the
Land of Texas, Longhorns eleven to four. Right now, I
wanted to talk about Tyron Smith. Tyron Smith of the
Dallas Cowboys signed a one day contract to come back
after he had went to the New York Giant I
mean Jets for one season and now he has decided

(40:52):
to walk away.

Speaker 3 (40:54):
He was an eight time Pro Bowler at left tackle.

Speaker 1 (40:57):
He's retiring after thirteen season in the NFL. But the
ironic thing about his retirement, it also means that another
Dallas Cowboy has walked away as well, and that is
Zach Martin. Two of the best players to ever put
on a Dallas Cowboy uniform, especially when you look at

(41:20):
those offensive lines. Both of those guys have walked away
from the game that has given so much to them.
And Mark, I sit back and I think about the
history of the Cowboys and this I believe since I've
been following them, I believe this is the first time
that two legends of the Dallas Cowboys, two draft picks,

(41:41):
walked away together in the same season, which means I
believe that both of these guys are going to go
into the Hall of Fame together first ballot. They should be,
both of them should be. Absolutely, I don't doubt that.

Speaker 2 (41:55):
I mean, you know Jeron Smith that he was all
pro yep, and so was Zach Martin.

Speaker 3 (42:01):
So like Zach.

Speaker 1 (42:02):
Martin is like the all decade, all century, all everything team.

Speaker 3 (42:06):
Yeah he's been on that.

Speaker 2 (42:08):
We haven't even invented awards yet, that he's going to
get absolutely like he's he was super impressive, both of them,
and I wish him well and I hope that they
are first ballot, they go in together.

Speaker 3 (42:21):
It's only right.

Speaker 1 (42:23):
Yeah, it is something to be seen. But we want
to talk now is all about the NFL Draft. And
speaking of the NFL Draft, you can join myself, Craig Wag,
Cam Parker and of course the world's strongest man, Mark
Henry at Twin Peaks. And a special shout out to

(42:44):
Twin Peaks for letting me be one of their endorsers,
because Twin Peaks has always been a special place that
we have been able to go and eat, have meetings,
have conversations, and they've always treated us good. In last
year's draft was a success, so why not run it
back and we will do it again. We will be

(43:04):
at Twin Peaks the Round Rock location starting at two
o'clock next Thursday, day one of the draft, where we're
hoping to hear a lot of Texas Longhorns be drafted.
And one of the guys that we want to talk
about is going to be Quinn yours and Quinn Yours
had an opportunity to talk just the other day about

(43:27):
the path to the Draft with Rhett and Bucky Brooks.

Speaker 3 (43:32):
All about the draft.

Speaker 6 (43:35):
What an incredible collegiate run it's been for Quinn you Ers,
Texas Longhorns quarterback who joins US now last two years
leading the Longhorns back to national prominence in the College
Football Playoff and now joining us here on path to
the draft. Quinn, Rhet Lewis, Bucky Brooks here with you.
Thanks for joining us. Man, appreciate you.

Speaker 4 (43:53):
Yeah, yeah, good to see you guys again and appreciate
you all having me.

Speaker 6 (43:56):
Yeah, of course, man, we want to get into everything
about your profile. But as a quarterback, man, I know
part of your your mo is that had that low
blood pressure right to kind of stay level headed. But
here we're sitting here less than ten days until the
NFL Draft. Like, is the anxiety and the anticipation starting.

Speaker 3 (44:13):
To get to you at all? I don't think so,
honestly not.

Speaker 4 (44:18):
I'm just I am ready to see where you know,
where I end up, and you know what system I'm
going to be in and who I'm going to be
around for sure. But you know, at the end of
the day, I think it's gonna we're I'm gonna end
up where I'm supposed to end up at the end
of the day, and and I'm just fired up to
get to where where whoever picks me. Man, it's it's
a cool time for me, you.

Speaker 7 (44:37):
Know, Quinn, what was really cool was watching you develop
under Steve Sarkesian. It appears that you guys have a
special relationship. You always appear to have your back when
it came to talking about you. How you're a great
leader at Texas. What have you learned from sark that
I helped you be prepared to go to the next level?

Speaker 3 (44:53):
Yeah, sorry to awesome.

Speaker 4 (44:55):
You know he's obviously he was a successful quarterback in
college and he lets us know that all the time,
especially his Cotton Bowl his Cotton Bowl stats and whatnot.
So but no, I mean I like to say, like
we got to pee, like if you go to Texas
player in the Star if you're getting a PhD in
quarterback play. And he's taught me a lot about the game,
kind of like the game within the game, and I'll

(45:17):
be taking all that stuff with me to the next level.

Speaker 3 (45:19):
I mean, coach guys, and.

Speaker 4 (45:21):
Like Matt Ryan over there with the whenever he was
with the Falcons, and you know he's got he's got
the NFL experience, so you know, we were in an
NFL program, and we ran a lot of We ran
the program like it was an NFL franchise.

Speaker 3 (45:35):
And they did. They ran it like an NFL franchise.

Speaker 1 (45:38):
And the thing about it is that is why it
really shocks me when a lot of people find a
way to try to discredit what Quinn was able to
accomplish here at the forty Acres. It's hilarious when people
question coach Sark and his abilities to judge what a

(46:00):
quarterback is capable of doing. You don't think that the
first thing that comes to his mind is victory. And
if he felt like Arch was the right guy for
the job, that that's not what I mean. Yeah, there's
a reason why he's the head coach of the Texas Longhorns.

Speaker 3 (46:20):
I stopped being mad. Yeah, you know, like I.

Speaker 2 (46:24):
Realized that everybody is not qualified to have an opinion right,
because even people with good opinions sometimes can be shown
something and they have to be able to drop their
pride and their willingness to always be right and say,
you know what, that's a good point. Yeah, never thought

(46:45):
about that. I didn't understand that. And Quinn said something
that I thought was super interesting or interesting, as you
would say, he said, the game within the game. Yep,
that coach Sark teaches them how to manage in the

(47:07):
game within the game.

Speaker 3 (47:08):
I was. I was fortunate enough to have a trainer
named Rip Rogers.

Speaker 2 (47:14):
Really abrasive, not everybody's cup of teams, right, but he
would say, be over prepared and be able to understand
how to work within the work. What do you do
in between the start and the finish is what's going

(47:34):
to make you great. And that's it seems like the
exact same thing that Quinn just said.

Speaker 1 (47:40):
Right, Like he said, you got to be able to
understand what's happening within the confines of the game.

Speaker 3 (47:46):
So knowing the game and knowing what's next.

Speaker 1 (47:49):
You know, we always talk about in baseball, always try
to bring it back to being two steps ahead. And
I always bring this analogy up, and it came from
a young kid and he went on to do great
things in the big leagues.

Speaker 3 (48:03):
His name was Rick and Kill.

Speaker 1 (48:05):
He was on his way up on through the minors
and he was a superstar, unbelievable player. And I was
in the latter stages of my career, so I was
always kind of challenging these guys and trying to help
them and guide them. And he said something to me
one time that I wasn't used to hearing from a
young kid, and I think he was twenty years old

(48:27):
at the time, and he told me. I asked him,
I said, what are you looking at when you go
on to the mound? Are you looking at the scouting reporter?
Are you looking at this guy that's coming to the plate.
And we were playing against some great guys, and he said,
what I actually think about is if it's a left
handed batter, it's Barry Bonds. If it's a right handed batter, it's.

Speaker 3 (48:50):
Another great Mark McGuire.

Speaker 1 (48:52):
And I was like really, and he said, yeah, what
I'm trying to do is I'm not trying to face
the guy that's down here. I'm trying to figure out
how I'm gonna get somebody out at the big league level.
And I was like, Wow, for a twenty year old
kid to already have that one, he had that already
had that mindset. And to your point about what you
said about Rip Rogers and what Quinn was saying about

(49:14):
Coach Sark, you have to understand what the game is
and where each play live to play the next play,
and that was the game within the game, so I'm excited.
We still don't know where Quinn is going to go.
There's a lot of speculation. We don't know what round
he's gonna go in, but I believe that I personally

(49:35):
believe he'll end up with either the Las Vegas Raiders
or he's gonna end up with the Los Angeles Rams.

Speaker 3 (49:44):
I think those are the two landing spots for him.

Speaker 1 (49:47):
I know a lot of people are saying Dallas, but
I believe he's gonna end up going to a West
Coast type team.

Speaker 2 (49:54):
I can see Quinn doing like Brady. He's sitting on
the bench on the clipboard, and then somebody gets hurt,
and then he goes in and he never leaves yep, because.

Speaker 3 (50:07):
He's got that. He's got that in him.

Speaker 1 (50:11):
And if you're able to go out there and show
that you belong, then you belong and everybody's gonna like him.
I've never heard any player not say, hey, man, that Quinn.

Speaker 3 (50:27):
He get us right.

Speaker 2 (50:29):
We're ready to go after talking to him right.

Speaker 3 (50:32):
And leadership is a big part of it too.

Speaker 1 (50:34):
Quinn is a special, special type of player coming up
next Draft day. Now, Kuiper has released his draft, His
mock draft, and of course a big fish literally is
on the market.

Speaker 3 (50:48):
Well, Dallas make a move.

Speaker 1 (50:50):
We'll talk about it right here on the morning kickoff
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. That's up, all right,
this is the time of year where everything goes crazy.
We've already heard the conversations about Shador Sanders and how
people are seeing him drop in the NFL draft. We've

(51:13):
heard about other players that are having this opportunity to
be recognized in this NFL draft. My cousin was once
one of those guys that was getting ready for the
NFL draft. And certain guys can either make you or
break you in these drafts, and one of those people

(51:35):
is Mail Kuiper. A lot of folks are looking at
Mail Kuiper. Sometimes you believe in what he says, sometimes
you don't believe in what he says. But he and
Phil Yates were having their mock draft. This is the
first mock draft for both of these guys, and they

(51:55):
were going back and forth. Mail Kuiper or a Phil
Yates would have the number one mel Kiper would have
the number two pick, and so forth and so forth.

Speaker 3 (52:05):
So I looked through their.

Speaker 1 (52:07):
Mock draft yesterday and mel Kuiper and Phil Yates talked
about three Texas Longhorns in this draft, Kevin Banks, Matthew Golden,
and Jaday Baron. Those are the guys that we all
believe will be first round picks. First off, can we

(52:28):
get everybody that's like doing these picks to pronounce ja
Day's name right night? I'm if I hear one more
guy say today, I'm gonna jump through my screen and
punch him right in the champ.

Speaker 3 (52:43):
Man, you are very violent.

Speaker 1 (52:45):
You are very yeah, Early Man, Yeah, you are a
violent human being. I take all that back. I didn't
mean it, but it is. You know, they vary and
who be the first one off the board. I still
believe that Kelvin Banks. I don't understand how he continues

(53:07):
to fall in some people's eyes.

Speaker 3 (53:10):
I always get frustrated when you.

Speaker 1 (53:13):
Talk about watch the tape right like, you're going up
against guys that were first rounders and you're you're you're
stunting their growth, You're not letting them get to your quarterback.
You are dominating against guys that went in the first round.
Yet they still look at you and think that you're

(53:33):
you're not good because of your hand placement, your movement.

Speaker 3 (53:37):
I mean I thought, when you get to the NFL.

Speaker 1 (53:39):
They're supposed to be taught even more than what they
already know.

Speaker 2 (53:42):
What's the defensive n that that went to Houston Anderson
and made it?

Speaker 3 (53:47):
He made a promost.

Speaker 1 (53:48):
Yes, he was rookie of the year, defensive rookie other years?

Speaker 3 (53:52):
What what what did Banks do to him? Shut him down?
Stut his growth?

Speaker 2 (53:56):
He had no tackles exactly, moved him to the other
side in the fourth quarter just so he can get
one tackle.

Speaker 1 (54:03):
Yes, yes, that is why it is always interesting when
all of a sudden and I told my son this
all the time, everybody talks about the eye on the
sky doesn't lie until it's time for you to go
and draft somebody like it doesn't make sense, and it's
just a frustrating, frustrating conversation every single time. But anyway,

(54:29):
mel Kiper and Fieldy eights have Kelvin Banks going at
number eleven to the San Francisco forty nine ers. And
the reason why they say the forty nine ers is
because Trent Williams is going to be thirty seven next
year this season, so you start looking at Kelvin Banks and.

Speaker 3 (54:53):
Then here's the other part.

Speaker 1 (54:55):
Banks has a massive eighty four and three three eight
inch wingspan. What happened to the short arms? Why were
people talking about moving him to guard?

Speaker 5 (55:08):
Like?

Speaker 1 (55:08):
It made no sense to me because now all of
a sudden people are looking at him and saying, no, Well,
they just said he's got an eighty four and three
eighth wingspan. That's massive, so he would be able to
play that position. And add to it, forty two starts
forty two starts walked into the University of Texas as

(55:29):
a true freshman and started, I don't understand how these
people are looking at other guys in front of him
on the offensive line, like the kid from Missouri and
the kid from Michigan and lsu.

Speaker 3 (55:45):
I mean, he get his body of work and who
he's gone again?

Speaker 1 (55:49):
I agree, man, That's why it's real interesting to me.
But the next pick, they have the Dallas Cowboys taking
Matthew Golden another Longhorn Longhorn at number twelve to compliment
what CD Lamb is already able to do and gives
Dak Prescott somebody that he can rely on as the

(56:12):
number two wide receiver. And I know a lot of
people keep looking at the running back position and possibly
Ashton gent falling to the Cowboys. But in this mock draft,
they have the Las Vegas Raiders taking Ashton genty, so
he will be off the board and then you come
down to the Cowboys, and the Cowboys go after effort

(56:35):
after Matthew Golden, who ran a four to nine.

Speaker 3 (56:38):
I'm down with that.

Speaker 2 (56:40):
I'm one hundred down with Hards because it's already even
with double coverage and having linebackers drop back and like
a little umbrella type coverages, CD still eats yep.

Speaker 3 (56:54):
Imagine if now there's there's.

Speaker 2 (56:57):
No safety over there and you're fifteen yards away from him, Like,
it's just gonna make for all of you know, just
a better situation for the Cowboys offense.

Speaker 3 (57:09):
And I think the Cowboys are going to have to
score more.

Speaker 2 (57:12):
Yeah, I mean they already scored thirty points a game,
but they're gonna have to score thirty seven points a
game to beat Washington.

Speaker 3 (57:20):
Yeah, just to beat the Eagles.

Speaker 1 (57:22):
Yeah, you're definitely gonna have to score unless your defense
is going to be that tough. But in that conference,
you see every team has gotten better. Look, yeah, you
gotta go out there and score some points. And then
it has that number sixteen. What do you like Ja
Day or Joday. It's Jade bat the Arizona Cardinals taking

(57:45):
him with the sixteenth pick in their mock draft.

Speaker 3 (57:50):
And it shows a lot of versatility.

Speaker 1 (57:51):
Because I was on the show in Las Vegas yesterday
talking about him and what he brings to the table,
and I always go back to his versus utility. You know,
every position that he was asked to play at the
University of Texas.

Speaker 3 (58:07):
He excelled at.

Speaker 1 (58:08):
He excelled and got better and better until they decided, hey,
you know what, We're.

Speaker 3 (58:13):
Gonna leave you at corner.

Speaker 1 (58:15):
And all he did was win the Thorpe Award because
he was that talented.

Speaker 3 (58:19):
He was good at safety, He was good at corner.

Speaker 2 (58:22):
When they put him in slot, usually guys his size,
you know, six' one corners don't do well in the slot.
You need those five to nine six feet corners that can,
you know, really move around.

Speaker 3 (58:37):
John d A was able to do it all. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (58:41):
I would draft him just off versatility and being able
to Like we talk about Jordan Lewis, Jordan was not
an outside corner right, but at inside moving laterally back
and forth.

Speaker 3 (58:54):
Man it was hard to beat, Yeah, and it is.
It is interesting too because.

Speaker 1 (59:01):
When you watch him, he's not afraid to come in
there and lay that hat on you. He can go
out there and he's got great ball skills. He can
he can high point the ball, and he's just versatile
enough that he could probably return punts, he.

Speaker 3 (59:16):
Can block, kick, he can do it all.

Speaker 1 (59:18):
So whoever gets him that Swiss Army knife will have
the ability to put him in places to succeed. He
reminds me of the Honey Badger. Yeah, he reminds me
of the Honey Badger, where he's not afraid to go
in there and make plays. And of course he ran
a four to three, so add that to the resume

(59:39):
as well.

Speaker 2 (59:40):
And he's not one of those guys that just tried
to go in there and unlace your shoes.

Speaker 3 (59:43):
No, he's coming at you.

Speaker 2 (59:44):
It comes and hands behind the knees showed in the
gut and he's trying to take you down.

Speaker 1 (59:50):
Yeah, he's definitely there to make plays. And so I'll
be following this closely. As I said, we will be
at twin peak for the draft starting next Thursday, two thirty,
I mean two o'clock. Start right here, on AM thirteen
hundred The Zone, Come out, hang out and let's talk

(01:00:10):
about it, and Mel Kuiper and Phil Yates have Andrew
mccouba going number seventieth overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars, so
Texas is on the move, on the move. And another
longhorn going to the forty nine Ers. That would be
Alfred Collins.

Speaker 3 (01:00:31):
I see you, I see you Shanahan.

Speaker 1 (01:00:34):
Coming up next, we have the world's strongest man bringing
you his world's strongest take right here on the morning
kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. That's
what he does, and you know what else he does.
He brings you the world's strongest take, Holly, brought to
you by the world's Strongest Man and the WWE Hall

(01:00:57):
of Famer, the Mark Henry.

Speaker 3 (01:01:00):
Take it away, big fellow. All right, you know what
I'm saying.

Speaker 5 (01:01:04):
It is?

Speaker 3 (01:01:04):
What is it?

Speaker 2 (01:01:05):
It's time for the world's strongest take by the world's
strongest man.

Speaker 3 (01:01:12):
Mid guests, good job with that open. I love it.
You know, I love me to me Back then they
didn't know me. Now I'm hot. They all on me. Guys.

Speaker 2 (01:01:30):
It's okay to use incorrect grammar when you say that's
what I do.

Speaker 3 (01:01:38):
You can say that's what he do.

Speaker 2 (01:01:41):
If you're referring to me saying that's what I do,
say it with your chance hard that's what I do. Yes, sir, Yes, sir. Yeah, guys,
my take today. It's hard for me to swallow this.
It's hard for me to say this because I've even
this guy so much flack this season and then he

(01:02:05):
deserves it.

Speaker 3 (01:02:06):
Though he deserves it. I accept your apology.

Speaker 1 (01:02:11):
No, not you, You're all right, You're all right.

Speaker 2 (01:02:17):
I'm talking about Draymond Green. About a month ago, this big, big,
big trade, big trade, Jimmy Butler goes to Golden State
and in this trade, Draymond Green says the next day

(01:02:38):
after the trade, they hadn't practiced together. They had had
I don't know how many conversations they had, but Draymond
Green said, now that we have Jimmy, we're gonna win
a championship. And I laugh like I'm still laughing right now.

(01:02:58):
And I'm not laughing though more because of what he said.
I'm laughing because I'm apologizing my Green. Draymond Green made
me a believer last night watching the game in the playoffs,

(01:03:20):
the Golden State Warriors were able to us to beat
the Memphis Grizzlies, despite the fact it was the worst
officiating that I've seen offseas. The first half, they made
no calls, they just swallowed the whistle. The second half,

(01:03:45):
it was like the referees all got together and decided,
we don't want Golden State to win, so let's handicap them.
Anything goes with Steph Carey. I'm gonna give you Steph
Curry's stat line. Steph Curry played for thirty nine minutes.

(01:04:15):
He was nine for twenty two. He was six for thirteen.
He had eight rebounds, four assists, and thirty seven points.
The reason that his three point percentage was high was

(01:04:37):
because he was doing Steph Curry things, and you just
can't file somebody in the on the perimeter. But every
shot that he took going to the basket, every one
of them. And that's where we go into this nine
of twenty two, this horrible percentage.

Speaker 3 (01:04:58):
He was filed, he was grabbed, he was held.

Speaker 2 (01:05:03):
Steph carry very likely could have scored forty five to
fifty points last night. Jimmy Butler did Jimmy Butler big
playoff Jimmy things. He was twelve to twenty and scored
thirty eight points, which is a typical big playoff Jimmy

(01:05:24):
stat line.

Speaker 3 (01:05:26):
But the whole point of this is Draymond Green saying.

Speaker 2 (01:05:31):
That with Jimmy Butler they're more versatile, incredibly able defensive team,
along with having one of the best scorers in the world.
Be put in a situation where he can do what
he does, and I have to say he is right.

Speaker 3 (01:05:53):
To I think, man, this is my take.

Speaker 2 (01:05:57):
The best team in the East Boston clearly, really close Cleveland,
and we all know that Shay Gilders Alexander is the
best player in the league and he's going to get
the MVP at Oklahoma City. Number one team in the
West and right behind them, even though Houston is ranked

(01:06:22):
above them. The Lakers have proved in beating Houston three
to one this year that they are better team than Houston.
So I would put the Lakers as the second best team.
Golden State beat the Lakers pretty handily. They split this year,

(01:06:44):
but Golden State did more damage to them. I would say,
in my heart of hearts that I do think now
Draymond was right that they can win the NBA Championship.

Speaker 3 (01:07:00):
What say you.

Speaker 1 (01:07:03):
I don't think they have enough depth to be able
to do that. I think that they will be in
a position to give some guys a couple of good games,
but I don't think they can win the NBA Championship.
I think it's hard for them because of the fact
that now we're going to a series that's one game.

Speaker 3 (01:07:25):
It's gonna be hard for a series.

Speaker 1 (01:07:27):
You see how much Steph has to go through during
these games. It is a lot of running, It is
a lot of wear and tear. The physicality. Jimmy thirty
eight points, that's cool. How consistent is he gonna be?
We don't know. Dremond Garrod teed to get a technical

(01:07:51):
at some point this weekend and when they start this series.
Just because of the physicality of this email, Doka is
not going to let Golden State just come in and
bully them into thinking that they're about to just run
through this squad. So not saying that they can't get

(01:08:15):
past Houston, but they ain't guaranteed to get past everybody
else that's in that West that they may end up
having to go.

Speaker 3 (01:08:24):
Let me you.

Speaker 2 (01:08:26):
You do you think Golden State can beat Houston series?

Speaker 1 (01:08:30):
Yeah, I think they can beat Denver. No, I don't
think they can be Denver. You don't think they can
beat the Lakers the Nope. And you don't think they
can beat Oklahoma City, Nope. Series not one game. One game,
anything is possible, but in a series, nah, I don't

(01:08:54):
think it can happen. Another great take by the world's
strongest man. We'll see how everything turns out because basketball
continues to roll. Coming up next, we're going to close
out the show to send you to Dan Patrick. But
just remember this, we are going to preview more basketball
games because they are still playing play ins right here
on the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred

(01:09:17):
The Zone. If you missed any part of the show,
all you got to do is get over to the
podcast page and check out all of the great guests
that we've had, all the great comments that we've had,
and of course we want to thank you the people.
But Mark, you got some people that you want to
think if I'm not mistaken, right.

Speaker 3 (01:09:36):
Yeah, man? You just giving shout outs.

Speaker 2 (01:09:38):
Man, I want to give shout outs my people over
there a mum foods. Okay, guys, this is not a
structured shout out. This is from my heart. If you
like pastromi and you like New York style cheesecake. I

(01:09:58):
suggest that you get the Moms immediately. It's medicine. It's
medicine for your stomach. It's so good.

Speaker 3 (01:10:09):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (01:10:11):
Shout out to advantage storage too, man, Yeah, gotta make
it happen. Gotta get your storage done.

Speaker 3 (01:10:18):
There. It is then where it is. I wanted to.

Speaker 1 (01:10:21):
Talk about this because you and I have been going
back and forth about these matchups and in the NBA
and these playing games and all of.

Speaker 3 (01:10:29):
The playoffs that are going on.

Speaker 1 (01:10:31):
So tonight the Dallas Mavericks, we talked about Nico and
what goes on with him. The Mavericks will play at
Sacramento tonight at nine o'clock on the road. But the
day starts with the Miami Heat versus the Chicago Bulls.
The Heat has been up and down all season long.

(01:10:52):
You look at what Chicago and the players that they have,
and what what brings out.

Speaker 3 (01:10:59):
The best in them?

Speaker 1 (01:11:01):
Who you got in this first game six point thirty
tip on ESPN. The Bulls are favored by a point
in the half over the Miami Heat. Jimmy's gone. The
Heat have kind of found their way into this is
bam out of Bio gonna think that he is a
six foot nine point guard or is he gonna go

(01:11:23):
in there and bang a little bit to try to
get this team to the next level.

Speaker 2 (01:11:27):
And Chicago has been balling. Chicago's really been playing well. Man,
I feel like I'm gonna have to go to Chicagos.

Speaker 3 (01:11:36):
As much as I feel like Hero.

Speaker 2 (01:11:40):
Has a chance to establish himself as one of the
dominant guards in the league, everybody else is not meeting
him in Chicago.

Speaker 3 (01:11:50):
I mean in.

Speaker 2 (01:11:51):
Miami, they're just not They're just not standing up. So yeah,
I'm gonna go with Chicago.

Speaker 1 (01:11:57):
And it's interesting because the points per game is so
close that it is.

Speaker 3 (01:12:03):
It is one of those things that I's a pick them.

Speaker 1 (01:12:05):
You know what I'm gonna do tonight, I'm gonna take
the Miami heat.

Speaker 3 (01:12:08):
I'm gonna take the because.

Speaker 1 (01:12:10):
Well, I mean, you talked about Tyler Hero and what
he needs to do. But I'm also looking at bam
Outebayo on saying, hey, man, go over there and show
why you believe that you are a franchise type of player.
This is your opportunity to step up and make something happen.
And speaking of stepping up and making something happen. The

(01:12:30):
Dallas Mavericks are going up on the road to Sacramento.
They're taking on the Kings. We have been talking about
this matchup, not necessarily this matchup, but the matchup of
Anthony Davis taking over this. He's going up against the
bonus and what he's the double double machine in the NBA.

Speaker 3 (01:12:50):
Dallas went out.

Speaker 1 (01:12:51):
And said, we need to see a guy that is
a two way player. Can Anthony Davis show that he
is a two way player, be a defensive minded guy
when they try to get into the paint. But he's
gonna be challenged in this matchup. But Sacramento a team
that is five and five in their last ten games,

(01:13:13):
while the Mavericks are four and six in their.

Speaker 3 (01:13:17):
Last ten games.

Speaker 1 (01:13:18):
But I'm gonna take the Mavericks because you know why,
I'm not firing Nico.

Speaker 3 (01:13:23):
Niko's not going anywhere. The Maicks dogs.

Speaker 2 (01:13:27):
Though the two of those losses came to the Lakers,
who Luca was emotional and went off, and the other
one came from Oklahoma City. Who is Oklahoma City? Yep,
you can't deny either one of those two teams. But
the whole thing is not gonna come down to Anthony

(01:13:49):
Davis and sabonas they're gonna do them.

Speaker 3 (01:13:52):
It's gonna come down to Ken.

Speaker 2 (01:13:54):
Dinwiddi do what he did against the Lakers and play
above his head and scored twenty five points because that's
the guard play.

Speaker 3 (01:14:04):
With Kyrie Irving being gone.

Speaker 2 (01:14:06):
They're gonna have to have somebody step up at guard
in Dallas. And it's sad that they lost Kyrie, but
I think things would be different if they did have it.

Speaker 3 (01:14:16):
They played each other on March the.

Speaker 1 (01:14:20):
Third, and the Sacramento Kings beat the Dallas Mavericks one
twenty two to ninety eight. In that matchup, you you
Zach Lavine was still on the team.

Speaker 3 (01:14:33):
I mean it was the key part of that.

Speaker 1 (01:14:36):
Kai Jones was the leading scorer for the University Texas, Yeah,
for the Mavericks. So that lets you know, yeah, you
know that. That just tells you that if Kai Jones
was your leading scorer, you didn't have Anthony Davis. You

(01:14:57):
did have Kyrie though, but you had Clayton Bompson and
Dante Exem and Dwight Powell all in the starting lineup.
That tells you everything you need to know about that
game at the rec Center. He can play Fondeck. And
I'm not a big fan of Dwight Powell. Matter of fact,
he is somebody that I am with.

Speaker 3 (01:15:19):
At all.

Speaker 1 (01:15:20):
I don't understand how he's still even on the team.
I think he should have been part of the Yeah,
he should have been the guy that was sent in
a trade with Luca. But Max Christie, he came off
the bench, he had played twenty nine minutes. Spencer dinwiod
he had ten points in that game. Now j Marshall
had eighteen. And as I said, ky Jones coming off

(01:15:42):
the bench to get twenty one points.

Speaker 3 (01:15:45):
Their starters.

Speaker 1 (01:15:47):
Their starters barely got to twenty five twenty four points.
So the bench was everything. And so we'll see. I
think that was the game that Kyrie got hurt if
I'm not mistaken, because he only played nine minutes in
that game. So yeah, But Zach Levine, he's a big difference.
DeMar DeRozan, He's gonna be a big difference for Sacramento.

(01:16:09):
But the big man in the middle, the top rebounder,
Demontis Seboldis, is going to be the one that is
going to have to be able to know, no doubt,
no doubt. So for me, you start looking at these games,
you start to understand what exactly it is. And now
this team, these teams put a lot of pressure on

(01:16:32):
each other. So you're taking Chicago tonight. I'm taking the heat.
Are we You're taking sack? Are you taking Dallas?

Speaker 3 (01:16:42):
I'm gonna go Dallas. Okay. I think Denwi is going
to show up now.

Speaker 2 (01:16:46):
He's he realized he's the point guard, right, and sometimes
confidence is everything being being put in that role. Hey,
it's your job, like, go do your job and dontee excellen.
Oh my god, man, how does he How did he

(01:17:07):
get up in down the court on those legs? He
should sue his legs for non support.

Speaker 1 (01:17:17):
I want to thank everybody for tuning in to the
morning kickoff.

Speaker 3 (01:17:20):
I want to thank Mark Henry. I want to thank
Marcus Spears.

Speaker 1 (01:17:24):
I want to thank Danny Davis for breaking it down
for all things Texas women's basketball and of course Texas football.
And I want to make sure that you the people
tune in tomorrow. Kendrick Perkins will be on with us.
Will also have coach Los Nagel, and we will have
Eric Henry of Horns twenty four to seven big matchups

(01:17:47):
this weekend for Texas baseball, and we'll continue these conversations
for Marcus. For Mark, I'm harball hard to just remember this.

Speaker 3 (01:17:55):
Don't believe everything you.

Speaker 1 (01:17:56):
See, because even salt looks like sugar. Happy birthday to
our boss, Christine. Enjoy your day right here on the
morning kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Lis
