Speaker 1 (00:13):
Welcome back to a Texas turn Off, Tuesday edition of
the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio, and thirteen
hundred is Mike Harball, hars the World's Strongest Man, WWE
Hall of Famer v Mark Henry, and of course we
got our guy Khalil behind the boards. Coming up in
the next segment, we have Joe Cook of Inside Texas.
We'll get his thoughts leading up to the big matchup

(00:35):
at the Cotton Bowl, the eighty ninth good Year Cotton
Bowl Classic that will take place this Friday, six point
thirty kickoff. We will be in Arlington. We'll do our
pregame show from Boomer Jacks. We'll be posting that here
in the next couple of days, letting you know we'll
be there from three thirty to five thirty before we

(00:55):
head over to the big game.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
As Texas gets ready for Ohio State. We got special
guests coming too, though.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
I think we do, but I mean, are we sure
that the weather too.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
It's gonna be a little bit different, So we'll see.
Weather will be bad.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Yeah, so we will see if Jamichael is gonna be
able to make time.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Yeah, he's got some other things.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Going on, but hopefully he can make an appearance over
there and get us a chance to talk to him,
see what's going on with his son, who's being heavily
recruited by a bunch of schools, Texas being one of them.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
So we'll see how that goes.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
But it's a it's a big time for college football,
and it's a big time for Texas, and most importantly,
it's a big time for Quinn Yours. Quinn Yours has
gone through a lot of scrutiny at the University of Texas.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
He's much maligned.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
He's one of those guys that you either love him
or you hate him. And I still don't get the
hate part of it, but I do understand. You know,
people the expectations were so high for him being a
five star, almost a perfect score, five star coming out delivered.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Look he had been delivered.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Yeah, I mean, I'm looking at it.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
There's been a long.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Time since Texas been back to back playoffs, yeah, and
to the final four in this scenario, and he's been
the catalyst for it all.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Well, you know, he's been part of a great team
margin in the last three years. Texas beato you twice.
I'll take that as a win. We haven't played Arkansas
or an m in ten years, be both of them
in the same year. You have a guy that operates

(02:51):
the offense to where at any time, if you're behind,
you always got to account for him.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yep, he's, like you said.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Two years in a row college football playoffs, one play
away from going to the national championship last year and
now in passing the faris by the way it should
have been. But if he had thrown the ball three
feet lower, it was a high ball.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
If he had throw a lower.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
Ad Mitchell makes that catch, touchdown, game over, just like
he did this year against Arizona State. He completed that pass.
I feel like that's what we're gonna get on Friday. Well,
everybody's hopeful of that.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
But one of the things that I think needs to
be discussed was the fact that when Quinn left high school,
he left early, he got to school late and got
to Ohio State, and he talked about himself skipping high
school and what that was actually like.

Speaker 4 (03:59):
Yeah, I guess one of the main things was that
there was a I don't know if you guys remember
or not, but the Texas legislature wasn't gonna allow high
school fallall players to be paid, and you know, me
and my family had a pretty big opportunity in front
of us that you know, we felt that it was
a good a good decision for me to go on

(04:21):
and you know, foreg my senior year and enroll early
at Ohio State and you know, have the opportunity to
have some some good money in our pockets as a family.

Speaker 5 (04:31):
And sorry, what was the back end of that question?

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Just just uh getting to the team in the middle
of camp. I imagine that was a challenge. What was
that like?

Speaker 5 (04:41):
Yeah, no, it was.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
It was definitely definitely had to grow up super fast.

Speaker 5 (04:46):
You know, as you know, fall camp is not easy.

Speaker 4 (04:48):
And you know, going from a high school schedule to
where you know, you're practicing after school whatever it is,
practicing before school, and you know, for me to kind
of go in the middle of fall camp and you
know practice at a college level was definitely a shock
for sure. But again, I'm just super thankful for my
opportunity that I that I had up there.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
And now he gets an opportunity to face some of
those guys.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
He also talked about CJ.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Stroud and how he and CJ were in the same
class obviously, CJ took off and became who he was.
He got to school while they were already practicing, and
so he never really got an opportunity to truly compete
for that position. And CJ obviously took off because he
had been there and became who he is. And now

(05:38):
he's in the NFL doing his thing, leading his team
to back to back division titles. But now Quinn is
getting an opportunity to face his former teammates that he
spent some time with, and he was asked, what's that
like facing OSU.

Speaker 4 (05:54):
Yeah, it's gonna be awesome just to get to see
all those guys again. I mean in the semester that
I was there, I feel like I made, you know,
some pretty good relationships while I was there, And you know,
those guys were those guys were fun to be around
when I was there. They they took me in and
and kind of in a weird time for sure, for
as me coming in as you know, kind of in
the middle of fall camp, and you know, some of

(06:15):
those guys just kind of you know, saying what's up
to me, as simple as that, and you know, kind
of welcome, welcoming me in, and you know, I felt
like I belonged there, and it was it's gonna be
fun to get to see those guys, you know, me
and me and Jack Sawyer were roommates my freshman year
with a couple other guys, So it's gonna be it's
gonna be cool to get to see those guys for sure.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
Well, I hope that is not so cool that it
distracts you from what the what the mission is?

Speaker 2 (06:43):
You know the mission? Hard? Do you think that it's
going to distract him?

Speaker 3 (06:46):
The mission is to go and not make friends. That's
the mission.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
I knew you.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
I'm like, do you really think listen is gonna be
sitting there like, hey, what's up buddy?

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Hey?

Speaker 3 (06:57):
Listening to all of that made me go, I don't like, don't.
I don't want to hear that kind of talk. I
won't I want everybody ready to destroyed the anything.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
Well, it is definitely at that point of destroying.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Yes, I don't like that.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
I sometimes you got to set them up with your niceness. Okay,
sometimes you learn that. Yeah, you've done that. I've seen you.
I've seen you in action, So don't try to give
me that. I've been around you way too much. Yeah, exactly.
So we'll see.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
But one thing is for sure when you look at
quinn yours, they have shown that he can take over
the reins. And he talked about the trust that coach Milway,
what he has and what it's like being the quarterback
at Texas.

Speaker 4 (07:47):
Oh sorry, say something, Okay, Well, I can tell you
my first of all camp here. Obviously, I was battling
with Hudson Hudson card to turn the starting job. And
then towards the end of that, Stark and me had a,

(08:10):
you know, a good conversation where he pretty much told
me that it's it's my job. And you know, I
think that was a big step for me obviously, because
it makes things a whole lot easier whenever you do
know that you're going to be the quarterback and especially
the starter.

Speaker 5 (08:25):
It just helps my confidence for sure.

Speaker 4 (08:26):
And then you know, in that year, there's definitely some
ups and downs we're going on with the injury. You know,
we we came out the first quarter against Alabama and
you're in twenty twenty two, and you know, we were
rolling as an offense, and I feel like that obviously
helped build confidence in me and then everybody around me
and from from.

Speaker 2 (08:46):
Then on out.

Speaker 5 (08:46):
It's kind of just built on from then.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
And that's why he believes that this team is his.
From that day when coach Shark said, hey, you're my
starting quarterback, go ahead and do what you do that
game against Alabama, He's right. They were rolling here and
that big hit that came on him from I believe
it was God, not Anderson, it was the other turner.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Turner.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
He laid him out, and then he had to miss
some games, and then he came back later in the
season against Oklahoma and did some good things. But this
has always been his team since the day he got
to the university.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
Is this the most you've ever heard Quinn talk? Yes?
This season.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
Yes, I'm not accustomed to hear him analyze his career
or game plans or well.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
He normally he doesn't normally open up that much. It's
normally a very quiet what is that saying to you?

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Though?

Speaker 1 (09:47):
It's a lot. I mean the kid is going through
a lot. I mean he, like Michael Chaff said the
other day, Michael Chaff has gotten hate mail, he's got
hate text, He's got all these different things that have
happened in a short period of time. Just because of
that hit, right, And both of those guys believe in

(10:08):
their faith over everything, everything, and they are looking at
this opportunity.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
I mean, we talked about Texas is an underdog people.
You said it when you walked in here this morning.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
You're like, man, it seems like.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Everybody's not even giving Texas a chance, a chance.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
I'm going to tell you what I think about what
Quinn is going through with him talking so much, Well,
it's a farewell.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Yeah well, well you already knew that. He already walked
with the seniors. But we'll see. Coming up, we'll ask
Joe Cook.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Joe Cook of Inside Texas is joining us. Next, we'll
ask Joe Cook what he thinks about Quinn, Yours, the
thought process, and this Texas football team right here on
the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The
