(00:00):
This hour of programming on WOR issponsored by Black Mountain Capitol now former Westchester
County executive Rob Astrea on seven ten. That's my wife's favorite. Stevie Nicks.
Got to see her twice in concerts. He is fantastic. I'm Rob
(00:24):
Asperino and I am here for thenext hour here on seven ten WOR.
Glad you're with me too. Whata perfect day. I hope you're not
stuck on the Garden State Parkway orLong Island Expressway or the Throughway wherever.
But if you are, I'm gladyou're with me, and just keep it
locked into seven ten WR. Andif you miss the show, you of
(00:48):
course can listen at any time onour podcast, which is available like you
know, a couple hours after thisshow. And we got a lot to
do, so stick around. Severalthings I'm gonna talk about Kathy Hokeels just
ridiculous. I'm glad she did it, but she is just so over her
skis the accidental governor and this congestionpricing scheme, which I'm glad was killed
(01:14):
at least temporarily, but it's reallynot. It's just it's put on the
side until November fifth, when theelections are over and then it'll come right
back to life. Guarantee it,guarantee it. But there's something I saw
and it just it irked me tono end. So instead of you know,
talking about congestion pricing right now, which I will get to, I
wanted to bring this up first, and you're more than welcome to call.
(01:38):
I hope you do, because thisis I think so egregious. One eight
hundred three to one zero seven tenis the number one eight hundred three two
one zero seven ten. So didyou see what this town in Connecticut did.
The town it's just outside Hartford,it's Weathersfield, and it was a
(02:00):
state trooper in Connecticut. You probablysaw the news. He was killed in
the line of duty, in ahorrible whenever a police officer is killed.
And this state trooper he was struckby a hit and run driver during a
stop and it was on eighty fourin Southington, Connecticut. This was at
the end of May. So theyhad the memorial service at the Exfinity Center
(02:27):
in Hartford. Thousands of people showedup to honor this state trooper who was
killed and unfortunately he leaves a wifeand children behind. Okay, I think
most of us can agree that thatis a horrible thing that happened. Unfortunately,
there are some who will disagree me, disagree with me because they're part
(02:49):
of the far left in this countrywho can't stand the police. So in
this town of Connecticut, there wasa resolution put forward by one of the
council members to fly the thin BlueLine flag. Now you've seen that it's
an American flag and one of thestripes is blue. And the reason why
(03:13):
that they have this blue stripe isto represent law enforcement and to show the
ideals of what they're doing. Andaccording to Thin Blue Line USA, that
blue line is a symbol that representsthe police officers who kind of keep order
right. They separate you and mefrom the chaos going around in our streets
(03:35):
and everywhere. So they had acontentious debate in this city council because they
did not want this flag to beflown, and it failed five to three.
The motion failed to fly this flagin honor of a state trooper who
(03:59):
was killed, Connecticut state trooper. And you know what the reasons were.
And of course it's now a Democraticmajority on this town council. They said
that this flag represents white supremacists, and it's antagonistic, and so it was
prevalent this flag. It was usedas the mirror image, the opposite of
(04:21):
the Black Lives Matter protests. Sowhen all hell broke loose with George Floyd
and everyone used it on the leftof so many as an excuse to riot,
to break laws. And you hadour so called leaders, especially in
these democratic cities, painting Black LivesMatter on the streets, raising Black Lives
(04:45):
Matter flags. You had all theselovely white suburban liberals who would PLoP it
right into their front lawns, notfor one second doing any research on what
Black Lives Matter was. And theMarxists who took advantage of this situation to
raise tens of millions of dollars byreally forcing corporations and guilty people for whatever
(05:12):
reason they're conscience, to give themmoney. When this had nothing to do
with making the lives of black peoplebetter. Nothing. It was about raising
money for their cause and to skimand they did, and some of them,
you know, they found out aboutthis, and some of them I
think went to jail. But now, of course, this thin blue line
flag is representative of far right groups. It's the supremacist groups in America that
(05:40):
want to fly this flag. Ifyou like that flag, you must be
one of those who the DOJ's tellingus about you. You must be one
of those real white supremacists that hateeverybody in this country. Now, I
will tell you this, I don'tthink that flag should have been flown at
(06:00):
that town. Now you're gonna sayto me, whoop, hold on,
let's go backwards. What did hejust say? Here's my reasoning. I
don't think any flag other than theUnited States flag and or the state flag
and or the municipal flag should beflying on government property because and I was
(06:27):
confronted with this in my first yearas county executive in twenty ten. And
I remember we had a group ofpeople come in and they said, it's
a domestic violence awareness month or somethingI think that was coming up, and
we want to light up the countyoffice building in Purple, and we want
(06:50):
to put a flag on the flagpoleto represent this month. And I thought
about it for a minute, andI said, hmm, this month,
it's domestic violence. Who's coming walkingin the door next month and the month
after that and the week after that. And so I said, you know
what, it's my policy now.I don't know what the previous administration done,
(07:11):
but it's gonna be my administration's policythat we are not flying any flags
other than the United States flag andthe New York flag and the Westchester County
flag. There was and still isthe prisoner of War flag, and to
me, that was fine, itwas pre existing. That was fine.
But other than that, because herewe are, it's June. What is
(07:33):
June. June is Pride month, right, so everywhere that rainbow flag is
flying on government property. My wifewent to Jones Beach last weekend and she
said to me, and she wasso ticked off about this. She said,
that flag at Jones Beach, it'snot a US flag flying, it's
(07:57):
a Pride flag flying. Now,look, you can have your positions on
all of this, Okay, Ithink there's one flag that we can all
agree on, and unfortunately there's lesspeople agree on that one flag, by
the way, and that's the USflag because now they're trying to make that
into a symbol of hate. Andyet we've got the Pride flag up all
(08:22):
year round. I mean, didyou watch the news this week? Every
other story was about every little groupevery little municipality raising the Pride flag.
But that thin blue line flag isa symbol of hate. That don't tread
on me flag, which was actuallyone of the original flags of our country.
(08:46):
It was for the Revolution. Noneof these dopes know what that really
is. They have no idea thehistory of that flag. It has become
a symbol of hate because the leftdeems it. So I'm watching right now
video of the White House and they'reprotesting, and they've got the Palestinian flags,
(09:07):
that pine tree flag, that JusticeAlito is all just totally made up
controversy that flew outside of his LongBeach Island beach house. That's saying to
God, help us, we needyour we need your providence. It's an
appeal to God. What has happened. It's become a symbol of hate.
(09:31):
But the Pride flag, which manypeople are uncomfortable having flown on their behalf,
or the transgender flag, which iseverywhere that we have to we have
to permit. I take Metro Northin literally for a year now, since
last June, they put these heartson the outside of the Metro North cars
(09:54):
and it's a rainbow heart that nevercame down on June thirtieth or July first,
that's up permanently now. So thisleftist ideology, which is creeping everywhere,
is now affecting things like can wehonor a slain officer? And all
(10:15):
agree no, we evidently can't.So I get back to my original policy,
which I think everybody should adopt, and there should be no flags.
Your group, your group, yourgroup. We appreciate you coming to here,
but no, because when the prolife group comes in and says we'd
like this flag to be raised inhonor of the unborn children, what do
(10:37):
you think is gonna happen? Ofcourse they're gonna get the answer. No.
So I don't think we should besubjectively picking and choosing which organizations get
our stamp of approval on my propertytoo and which don't. And I think
we should just have one policy inthis state and country that we're all under
(10:58):
one flag. That's the only flagthat will fly on our property, our
property meeting government property, which Ithink we still own. I don't know,
maybe we don't. Maybe I'm silly, I'm naive to think that this
country is owned by the taxpayers andthe actual citizens. And soon the Mexican
flag is going to fly just towelcome all those who are here illegally.
(11:20):
Why don't we make them feel likethey're home because they are in their new
home. So you see, itnever ends. So I was really really
annoyed when I saw that. Itreally ticked me off to no end to
see that they are taking a flagthat is very well meaning and yet it
becomes a symbol of hate because that'sall the left does now. They drive
(11:46):
everything, and it's of course it'sdouble down by the media. Corporations won't
even fly a thin blue line flag. They won't fly that because they're going
to have the protesters outside screaming it'sthis, that and the other thing.
But corporations will definitely have the Prideflag. They all have a you know,
a division within their corporation to makesure that employees have to abide by
(12:11):
the new rules. And the newrule is we will salute the plot the
Pride flag. So I mean,look, we're in a state where it's
just getting worse and worse and worse, and this far left ideology is being
shoved down our throat, which iswhy that is why a lot of people
are left. And I don't thinkthat's arguable. Certainly a lot of former
(12:35):
Republicans New Yorkers are gone. Peoplewho are just fed up with things are
gone. It's not so easy todo. You can't just, you know,
rip up your roots and leave. If the kids are gone, maybe
you can do that, but it'sit's really hard. But they don't care,
and people are like, oh,they you know, they just they're
(12:56):
just driving people away. Yeah, that's by design, because the less of
US Republicans that leave the state, the better it is for them. They
can continue to go hogwild on allthis nonsense. Did you see Of course
you didn't up until right about now, and it was leaked. But remember
the transgender who shot up the schoolin Tennessee killed three little kids and three
(13:22):
adults. They have fought tooth andnail to prevent that manifesto from coming out.
And it was leaked. I forgetwhat paper in Tennessee, but they
got a copy of this. Butthe FBI, the Nashville Police Department,
they're all even the school for somestupid reason, wanted to make sure that
(13:45):
this did not come out. Whatis in here, If you read it,
it is frightening. But because shewas transgender, we have to protect.
But this manifesto is just sickening, sickening. How she goes off about
how she's not allowed to be aboy and all this other nonsense, and
(14:09):
how religion pushed her away, andhow her mom. I mean, it's
just but they're protecting. They protectinstead of telling the truth. They protect.
And now we've got a herd mentalityin this country with all these kids
thinking, yeah, I think I'mI think I'm transgender too, or I'm
bisex. No you're not, you'refollowing the leader. In fact, in
a poll that came out, it'slike twenty five percent of kids are saying
(14:30):
they're transgender. Come on, thisis so idiotic, but it's it's infecting
everywhere. So if you want totalk about this, uh, this flag
in Connecticut and what these these theseleftist council members refused to do, that's
fine. See again, I goback to me saying no the flag,
(14:52):
no, no other flag should beflown. But if they have a policy
in this town that allows different flagsto fly, then why the hell wasn't
this allowed to fly? I guessthat's more of my question. One hundred
three two one zero seven ten oneeight hundred three to one zero seven ten.
This show is your opportunity, especiallyon the weekend. This show is
your opportunity to be heard. Youknow, if you just keep quiet,
(15:18):
they win, okay, because nowyou have a voice, you can influence
other people who are listening. SoI always say, I don't care if
you agree with me or not.You will be allowed to come on the
air, even if you say somethingstupid. One eight hundred three to one
zero seven ten. All right,I will. I'll step aside, and
(15:41):
then when we come back, we'lltalk a little bit more about the flag.
I want to talk about Kathy Hokeel'snonsensical decision. A good one,
but just the way she did itwas so stupid. Anyway, you keep
it right here. You can listenof course always on seven ten wor dot
com no matter where you are,and and also of course on the podcast
(16:03):
which is the iHeart app, whereyou can listen to this live too.
So if you're just like plunking yourselfdown near a pool, or I don't
know, walking around mowing the lawn, which I did the other day for
the first time I had my Iwas listening to music and I never really
did I just kind of went offon my own when when I was mowing
the lawn. But this time Iactually listened to music. It was actually
more pleasant. So anyway, youcould listen to this show as you're clipping
(16:26):
the hedges or whatever. All right, we got a step beside. Come
back one hundred three to one zeroseven ten The rob Astorino Show, rolling
along right here on seven ten wrrob Asterino on seven ten wor Yeah,
we're gonna rock the boat. That'swhat we're four. So make sure you
listen in every Saturday at four o'clockrob Astorino on seven to ten woar.
(16:49):
And if you get a chance, also watch me before this radio show on
Newsmax from one to three. Ido Saturday agenda. Have a good time
that I walk over across town tocome to these wonderful iHeart studios. I
just heard that Pleasantville Diner commercial andI was there the other day. They
(17:10):
invited me and it was wonderful.I had a friend of mine. I
went actually twice. I took afriend yesterday morning for breakfast, and last
week I took my daughter's for dinnerthere and they treated us so nicely and
the food was terrific. Not reallydiner food. You know, if you
know what I mean, it's dinerfood that you got the diner menu.
But it's a really good diner. That's the only way to say is I
(17:33):
had a burger, which you know, a hit or missed some times at
diners. This was really good andbig. So thank you to the folks
at the Pleasantville Diner. All right, we got some folks that want to
call here. One hundred and threetwo, one zero seven ten. Let
us start in New Joysey and Jeff, you're on the rob Astro Reno show.
Hi, Jeff, Yeah, Hi, I'm from New Joys The I
(17:57):
just weren't the compliment you on yourflag position, because that is constitutionally the
correct position. Government should not bepicking and choosing what flags. If flags
are going to be a form ofspeech, they shouldn't be picking and choosing
which once they want to support it. In other words, you have a
(18:17):
flag for pro gay pride and thenyou have a flag anti gay flag.
That's not what government is supposed tobe doing. That's a great point,
and that's exactly my point that Iwas trying to make to people. Now.
They weren't happy when I said nodomestic violence lights on the building or
flag. But that's that's exactly why, because as you just said, what
(18:38):
if a group, a traditional groupcame in and said, wait, we
are totally against gay marriage. Webelieve in a man and a woman.
And you know, we're an organizationor the right to life organization whatever we
want our flag flown too on ourproperty. It's our property as well.
So that's the point I was tryingto make. And I think I think
(19:00):
too many governments get it totally wrongwhen they sit there and just bend over
for any group that comes in insteadof saying no, let us go to
I think Lucca. Is it?Line two there? Luccia, Luccia.
How are you where you're from?Lucia? Okay? So I live in
(19:21):
Kona. O good, And Iam calling you because I'm totally frustrated.
I want to do some campaigning.I want to volunteer, and I've called
a few people and nobody's ever calledme back. And I'd like to know
from you. I know, youknow who do I contact? Well,
(19:41):
if you're Lucia, thank you forthe call. I would try to contact
if you're in Westchester, where youare the Westchester Republican Party and Chairman Doug
Coulty and hopefully they take you up. Or you're in the town of Bedford,
so you should call the town ofBedford. And I think that's true
for anybody listening that want to getinvolved. Start with your local committee and
then or your county. And wedefinitely need warriors. We need people involved
(20:04):
on all levels. It doesn't matterhow old you are, because this is
the fight that we've got against alot of these crazies. Patricia in Brooklyn
and you're on seven to ten worhigh, Patricia. I don't want to
say too much because I'm afraid ofthe Bidamin administration, these people who are
(20:26):
out of control. They're really frightening. Yeah, I don't want to say
too much of anything. All Iknow is I'm aggravated. I want to
vote, and I hope my voterscount. And that's it. Well,
your vote will count. You haveevery right to be aggravated, and I'm
sure the Biden administration does not knowwho you are. In fact, next
(20:48):
time you call, I will pretendthat you are someone else. It'll just
be between us. But we'll keepyou anonymous caller from Brooklyn so they don't
come barging in with guns to getyou. Let us go two, Joe,
how are you, Joe? You'reon I guess you're from Long Island.
You're on seven to ten wo rhere on the rob Aster Reno Show.
(21:11):
Yeah, hello, hi Joe.Yes, yeah, my right is
now. Yeah, I'm calling aboutthe flag issue. Yeah, most people
don't. Most people don't recognize thatthere are federal requirements or a manner of
handling our government's of flag as arepresentative to like any other country, they
(21:33):
have a country flag. There arestate flags. No flag is supposed to
be flying on the same pole withthe American flag, other than the pow
flag. Correct, No state flag, no county flag, no corporate flag.
When you see people, when yousee corporations like like McDonald's flying their
flag underneath the American flag. Therelative to the manner of handling and presenting
(22:00):
to the public, especially on corporateon government prop property, We're not supposed
to be any other flag, NoNASA, county flag, no anything.
There's a difference between federal and state. The states can do whatever they want
individually. You can't be flying inNew York. You're not supposed to be
flying in New York flag or theSouth Dakota flag underneath an American flag on
(22:23):
the same pole. I don't knowall the restrictions, but I do know
that because I worked local government, that there are certain ways that we display
relative to what's been presented in print. I believe for the prior call of
this talking about constitutional manner. Idon't know all the ins and outs,
but I do know that the bluestripe flag. The Irish Police in New
(22:49):
York created what I know to beone of the first adulterated flags with the
green stripe. It's presented on televisionon certain shows quite regularly, and it's
adulterates the American flag. And don'tI don't think it's proper, and none
of us know because we don't knowcivics anymore. We're not talking these things.
That's exactly right, Joe, goodcall. And yeah, well,
(23:11):
I mean, is it any differentto have a T shirt with a flag
on it or a patch or youknow, you see the flag everywhere.
But you brought up a good point. Now, Also, the American flag
is supposed to be the highest,so the state flag is subservient, is
supposed to be a little bit lowerthan the US flag. The flag is
(23:32):
never supposed to touch the ground. So there are a lot of rules which
are completely disregarded by our quote againquote government leaders. All right, let's
go to Peter and Queen's one eighthundred and three to one zero seven ten,
one eight hundred three to two onezero seven ten. Peter, you're
on the rob Astorino Show. Howare you? Hey? How are you
(23:53):
doing? Rob good? You're playingvideo games there? What's going on?
No, I do apologize one ofmy passengers they went ahead and remove their
seatbelt. But I do wanted tospeak about when you guys were talking about
the flag. Yeah, I definitelydo agree that no one else should be
flying a flag that represents anything unlessthat it's a state or government. If
(24:15):
they're gonna be able to fly aflag, let's say the police American flag,
then they would have to let Junehave their prize flag. But if
they're not going to allow the townof Connecticut to fly the police flag,
then they shouldn't a fly They shouldnot fly the Pridet flag or any other
flag. Basically, it should bethe same for all. They can't pick
and choose. It's supposed to bea non biased government exactly, but I
(24:37):
guess you know, everybody's ideology isjust like everybody wants to beat everybody else,
you know. No, I thankyou for the call, Peter,
three to one zero seven ten. That's just it, because what is what
is objectionable to me or what isfavorable to me, is not going to
(25:00):
to be to you or to youor to you. And so that's why
we shouldn't be in this game ofjust having these flag raising ceremonies. And
look there's and I participated in someof them when I was county executive.
We would have, you know, for I don't know, October, you'd
have the Italian flag raised for ColumbusDay or something like that. So it
(25:26):
happens, I understand it. Butwe get into very dangerous territory when we
have this kind of permissive attitude ofanything goes. But it's not just anything
goes, it's I'm gonna pick whatI want and you don't have a say
in a government building. Sondra, you are on the air. How are
you, Sandra? One eight hundredand three to two one zero seven ten
(25:48):
is what she called. How areyou? Oh? Thank you, Rob,
I'm doing well, Thank you.I was going to talk about something
else. But since you're talking aboutflags, I keep remembering that Dan festival
in Washington State where a group ofyoung people wore the American flag costume and
because of that they were disqualified. And also I'm not sure I understand what
(26:11):
happened with the Supreme Court judge andhis issue with a flag. I thought,
maybe you can tell us about that. Yes, So thanks for the
call, Sondra. I appreciate it. One eight hundred and three to two,
one zero seven ten. So apparentlythe Washington Post had a photo of
Justice Samuel Alito at his summerhouse inLong Beach Island, and the flag that
(26:37):
was flying at one point for aday or something was and Alito said it
was put up by his wife, who co owns the house. And he's
not going to tell her yes orno. She's her own person, but
she was in a fight with herneighbor, and so she had put up
this flag, which is an appealto heaven. It's called it's the Pine
(26:59):
Tree flag. If you want tolook it up. It's historical. And
so they did not run with thisstory years ago because it meant nothing.
It was like it had nothing todo with his job. Or whatever.
Fast forward a couple of years towhere we are now. They hate Alito,
(27:22):
they hate Clarence Thomas, they wantto stack the Supreme Court. The
Democrats. They are attacking them onethical issues that don't exist. Meanwhile,
of course, Ruth bader Ginsburg,Oh my god, did I just say
something bad about Saint Ruth. ButRuth Gater bader Ginsburg was so prejudicial against
Donald Trump. She basically said,if this guy gets elected, I'm out
(27:45):
of here. And then she saidmultiple times in public that he's a buffoon.
And yet anything that came to theSupreme Court that had to do with
the administration she sat in on.Of course, But now they're trying to
make sure that Alito because of thisflag, which now the New York Times
and the left deans I hate flag. Of course, So the New York
(28:11):
Times sent four reporters, four witheverything going on in this freakin world,
four reporters, they said, tostake out Alito's house on LBI and to
interview neighbors about this non story. So if you don't think that we are
(28:32):
living in not only crazy times, but that the Left has a very serious
and dangerous agenda, of course weare but anything else going. I mean,
they literally had four reporters down therethe Hunter Biden trial. Everything else
got yeah. But you know,Alito had once for like a day four
years ago that even the Washington Postat that time said was no story,
(28:56):
and they were right. But theNew York Times elevates this to the story
of all stories because they want togo get any judge on any bench,
but certainly on the Supreme Court thatthey disagree with. So that's the background
of that. One other thing, since it's Pride month, we have a
transgender contestant has been crowned Miss Maryland. So Miss Maryland, miss miss right,
(29:25):
Miss Maryland. When you think ofthe word miss, you think woman
like that I know to be truethat we all know to be true.
Not miss as in their missing theirgenitals because they somehow pretend to be a
woman. We're all missing the pointof gender. Miss Maryland is now a
(29:49):
transgender woman. In other words,a man has just won the Miss Maryland
contest. He he was crowned MissMaryland, and he Bailey Ann Kennedy will
represent Maryland in the Miss America pageant, and they will of course cite this
(30:15):
as progress made in this country, and they'll have a big to do guarantee
out of the fifty or maybe it'sfifty one in the pageant, because I
think Puerto Rico, Bailly and Kennedy. I'd put my money on him winning
this Miss America pageant coming up,because wouldn't that just be wonderful. Wouldn't
(30:41):
that just say how far of anation we are now, how enlightened we
are. That a guy who shavesoff his hair, cuts off his whatever,
and he doesn't They don't even haveto cut it off anymore. I
mean, did you see some ofthese like Leah Thomas, the guy who
is tending to be a woman. It's swimming at U Penn. Have you
(31:02):
seen what he looks like when hegets out of the pool. He's not
in a bikini, nor should hebe. And yeah, you can see
things. So don't sit there andtell me you're a woman. And I'm
supposed to play along. So nowMaryland of course has a transgender woman,
i e. A man who justwon Miss Maryland, and we're all supposed
(31:25):
to sit there and clap. Imean it's just every time I think you
can't get any crazier, it does, all right, I have other things
to talk about. I really trulydo one other thing before I step aside,
because we're gonna have Jeff Zacharya injust a moment from Zaki's there.
(31:48):
It's a great, great wine andspirits store, very well known for eighty
years, and he's got some goodideas for Father's Day. But so a
lot of you, I know, have complained through the last couple of years
about your energy bill. So Ihad been a member member, I had
paid con Ed, I was acustomer of kan Ed for a long time,
(32:09):
and so you know, you getthese options where you can basically get
your supply from a third party, and I think it's bait and switch.
In fact, I know it's baitand switch now because I think two years
ago we switched from we still havecont Kaned sentends the bill. But this
(32:29):
other company, there's plenty of them. They supply apparently your electricity over kan
Ed's lines, but you pay thebill and it goes to this company.
So this company, Inspire Energy Holdingout of Santa Monica, apparently we're getting
so I think my wife signed upfor it. Not that this this blame
here, but so our bills havebeen going up and up and up recently,
(32:53):
and we were like, what isgoing on? So our last bill
was five hundred and twenty one dollarsand ninety seven cents for last month,
and I'm sitting there, what thehell is going on here? Why did
it jump so much? And it'sbeen steadily going up? So I called
kan Ed and I'm like, youknow what, because you can On the
bill it says you can check withConed what your bill would have been compare
(33:19):
it to what you're paying for thiscompany. So I called CONED. I
said, so I got a fivehundred twenty one ninety seven bill for this
past month, what would my billhave been if I was still with Coned?
And she says two hundred and eightyseven dollars and seventy cents, almost
double I'm paying for this company. And I called this company and I said,
(33:40):
well, I'm de enrolling from you. I'm going back to con ED
and she goes, well, whywould you do that? I said,
why why do you want me topay double? And she goes, because
it's for the earth? I said, are you kidding me? She goes,
well, we have clean, reliableenergy. I said, I don't
really care your clean reliable energy istwo times what I would pay for my
con ED bill. Thank you, goodbye. No, no, I'm going
(34:00):
back to kan Ed of all people. So my point is, check your
bill and see if you're getting itfrom kan Ed or from a third party,
and you always have the option ofswitching or going back. All right,
So Father's Day is coming up,hint, hint, and we totally
get overlooked. It's all about Mother'sDay. That's fine, But once in
(34:22):
a while, once in a bluemoon, we'd like something something other than
like a burger on a grill. So when we come back, Jeff Zachariah
from Zachy's is gonna tell us maybea couple of nice little ideas that you
could get Dad stick around. Thisis the rob Astino Show on seven to
(34:45):
ten WRR. For since the RobinoShow, I didn't even get to the
chession pricing thing which I started thisshow. I got so off on that
tangent about that flag in Connecticut. But we'll I'll try to sneak in some
words about hokl hitting the brakes onthis congestion pricing thing, which I agree
(35:07):
with. I don't think the congestionPRIs should be there to begin with,
they just spend five hundred million dollarson cameras and equipment to get this thing
ready, and she pulls the plugon it, which I'm glad she did.
But everything, of course is soscrewed up in New York. And
we will, by the way, next week, I think we've got a
really cool guest coming in. I'mjust waiting for confirmation. Otherwise I would
(35:30):
drop his name right now, butI will as soon as as soon as
I get confirmation. So make sureyou listen throughout the week for our promos.
Glad you're with me, rob Astarinohere on seven to ten. Woor
excuse me? So if you justheard that commercial for Zaki's, well done
commercial and a great place that Ihad a chance to visit. And Jeff
(35:51):
Zachariyah is the owner of Zachi's,part of a multi generations Jeff, how
are you? I'm great, exceptthat is someone even cooler coming on next
weekend than me. It's hard toimagine, but maybe so I'm just kidding.
No, Look, you know whatI I had a chance to go
(36:13):
to your store, and so peopleprobably know the Zaki's name. It's been
around since nineteen forty four, Soeighty years is pretty good. You're a
little startup. You've done well,You've got I remember that you had these
big ads in the New York Times, which I think a lot of people
would remember. And so I visitedyour store in Scarsdale when it used to
be there, and now it's inPortchester. What a nice right off ninety
(36:37):
five and two eighty seven. Reallyeasy to get to, but what a
nice building. It doesn't it's notlike a liquor store where you go in
there, it's like, you know, you're walking through little shelves here and
there. This is a really beautifulplace. So good luck in the new
location in Portchester. So how wouldyou describe Zaki's to the average person.
(36:58):
Yeah, so we're really a finewine and spirits store, right, we
focused when fine wine tous is anythingfrom twenty five dollars and up right,
so it's not expensive, but wereally focus on the fine wine side of
things. And as sad as itwas to move from Scarsdale, where we're
such a drive to destination, peopleare coming from such distances that it just
made sense to move, as yousaid, close to highways. We have
(37:21):
our own parking lot We're very closeto Greenwich and Rye and Larchmont and everything,
and we're still not far from Scarsdale. So for us, that move
really made sense to move to Portchester. Well, the birds are happy,
there's no question about that. Ican hear them in the background. Yeah.
So, wine obviously is different tastesto different people. Some people get
(37:44):
intimidated. I'm kind of a littleintimidated because, like, I love red
wine. I don't like white wine, but I love to experiment with different
types. And like some people said, well, you can't have red wine
with that, it's fish or whatever. To me, if I wanted,
I want it. But I wasHonestly, I was in the store the
other day. I wanted to lookat it, and the help was terrific.
(38:07):
And I'm looking at bottles like, hmm, that's a nice label.
Let me try that. It's like, you know, I know that's not
the sums to pick them, butyou tell me, like, if I'm
kind of new to this, Iwant to get a nice bottle of wine
for a party I'm going to orfor Father's Day or something like, what
(38:28):
would I what should I look for? Yeah, you know, if you
don't know that much about wine. You should go to your wine your your
a local wine shop as wine chopsthat's serious about wine, and they can
help you because they've tasted the winesthey know, you know, they could
really pinpoint the type of wine you'relooking for for a party. A red
wine for a fish, which isperfectly fine. Certain ones, certain reds
(38:50):
can do. I do that. They're delicious for fish, So you know,
you know those. That's my firstrecommendation. Because it's hard, it
can be intimidating if you don't knowthat much about it. It can be
great. There's a lot of peoplewho love wine who you know, begin
to enjoy it and learn about it, it becomes it becomes a real pleasure,
becomes a real, real integral partof their their their their dining experience
(39:13):
is to have a nice wine withthe meal. It really enhances the meal,
enhances the company, the conversation. So with not a lot of effort,
it can really enhance the meal andbecome a wonderful part of the evening
for you. You know. Sothe guy, I forget his name,
but I was in the store theother day and so I got this bottle
and he said, so when yougo home, I know if you're having
(39:36):
it tonight or whatever, when youopen it, you should let it open
the bottle and let it breathe forlike a half hour or so before you
serve it. And I I neverthought of that. It's like pull the
cork and man, swig it quickand put it and just start drinking.
But it it really makes a difference, right, yeah, But depending on
the wine. That's not true forevery wine, but for plenty of wines,
(39:59):
especially if they're young, are intheir life cycle, it's good to
let them breathe an air out alittle bit before you serve them. But
what really can be fun, whatI often recommend is tasting a little bit
when you first open it and thenwaiting, right, so you really understand
the reason that we want you towait a little while before drinking. That's
a good idea. I'll try that. So you got a cool job.
(40:19):
You probably go like all over theworld to vineyards and stuff, right,
I do, I do? CanI come? But you know, you
know, like anything, it becomesa job, right because work, it
becomes a job. I love it. I'm not complaining for a second.
And you know I've gone to Bordeauxnow for forty years, almost every year,
and I have a lot of friendsthere, but I really look forward
(40:42):
to seeing year after year. Andwe're multi generational, and so are many
of the chateaus, and so Iused to know the grandfather and the father
and now I've met the son who'sworking it, and I've introduced some of
them to my son who's working inthe business with me. So while while
it is work, it's it's Ilove the business and I'm very blessed to
be in it. Jeff Zachariah fromZachy's Fine Wine and Spirits, they're in
(41:07):
port Chester. Give them, givethem a call or go online and they've
got really nice stuff. And soa Father's Day gift it's coming up.
What would you recommend for the dadwho likes wine? Or maybe a nice
bottle of I don't know, Yeah, what do you recommend? Tell me?
I like bourbon? So what ifI like bourbon and I do,
(41:29):
what should A bottle of happies wouldbe nice, But tell me what someone
should get. Bottle of happies wouldbe great. But hoping some of my
kids might be listening, because Ilove bourbon too, and we have an
eh Taylor Bourbon a small bats Bourbon. That's just delicious that I'd certainly recommend
that if any of my many ofmy children are listening, that my recommendation
for me. H. So youknow, we've got a great selection of
(41:53):
bourbon and other whiskeys and voddas ofcourse, and a number of wonderful wines,
everything from Italian to French to California, you name it, we have
it. We can certainly take careof it for you. So here's a
question. So when you think ofwines, especially red wines, you do
think Italian, you do think French, you do think Californian. What is
(42:14):
another region of the world that youthink should get a spotlight that make really
good wine? But people really don'tknow about it. I don't know.
I'm just thinking like Chilean wine orwhatever. Where would you say would be
a good find. That's a greatquestion. And I love when people come
in asking questions like that because that'swhat gets us excited. Right. There's
(42:36):
great Bordeaux wines, there's great Italianwines. But when people are looking for
something different, looking to explore,we love to do that exploration with them.
So there's some fabulous Spanish wines, there's some great German wines more white
than red, but there's some fantasticGerman wines if you'd like. Chilean wines,
as you mentioned, are also great. There's really interesting wines and so
(42:57):
many places go out the world.Even New York State is making better and
better wine. Just gonna ask bothfrom the Finger Lakes, both from the
Finger Lakes and Long Island, andwell you're calling them in the Hudson Valley.
That's why that's my weekend home is. There's some nice wines from here
as well. So honestly was goingto ask you that. So tell me
because I've been to the Finger Lakes, I've had some wine. I've been
(43:17):
to some of the vineyards in LongIsland. I have not been to it,
believe it or not. I livethere, but I haven't been to
a vineyard in the Hudson Valley.I've been to breweries in the Hudson Valley.
But why why is New York soilor the New York wines catching on
a little bit? I mean, look, you can't put them near California
though, right California. No,the top points from California are really top,
(43:44):
top top. But part of what'sgoing on is wine that's really interesting.
It takes a long time to reallymake great wine in one region because
you really have to understand the region. I have to understand how the soil
works, sort of the best grapesto grow there, and you know,
every growing season it just one season, one iteration, so it can take
(44:07):
twenty thirty, forty years to reallyfigure it out. And there's been some
New York State wineries that have beenaround now for a long time. Besides
that, the techniques are just gettingbetter, so even in a more challenging
year, they still can make abetter wine. We're seeing that everywhere in
the wine world, which is exciting. Global warming which is a challenge,
but in a place like the FingerLakes which sometimes got colder there, it's
(44:30):
actually easier to grow greater, youknow, more interesting grapes at this point
as things have gotten warmer, that'shappening. That's helping as well. Did
you ever make your own wine?I mean, like, you know,
stomp on them with your feet.Never. I love selling wine, I
love drinking wine. I have nointerest in making wine. I'm letting other
people have passion for making wine dothat. My passion is sharing wine with
(44:54):
wine lovers, you know, alongthose lines. So if people are listening
right now, and they are andthey're like, Okay, I want to
get a bottle that will be impressive, but not it's going to break my
bank, like, you know, not a one hundred and fifty dollars bottle
of wine. But let's just say, like, I'll give a fifty dollars
(45:14):
limit, give me a really goodone or two bottles for red that you
would recommend. Yeah, I cancertainly do that. Now. I would
normally ask a couple questions like doyou have a certain region or anything that
you'd like to go to along thoselines, But if you don't, I
(45:34):
would certainly say something like a greatwine is Ponte Cana twenty twenty pont A
Cana out of Bordeaux. What's excitingabout many of these interesting wines out of
Bordeaux and other regions is they're reallylooking to go more and more organic.
Not that they want to put iton the label, but it becomes it
really enhances the quality of the wine. It just makes it. It just
(45:57):
makes it a richer, a richerand more enhanced flavor by letting nature just
do its natural course. So that'scertainly one out of out of France,
i'd recommend. Then I might goif it's out. Let's let's say I'll
go to California for another one.You know, you have so many options
here to go to choose, right, So it's like and so a great
(46:20):
one out of California. You saidwhat price trained You said around fifty dollars
right, yep? Yeah, SoRidge Litton Springs Infandel, Ridge makes great
wines, have been around forever.I love their wine, and there's infandel
is one of their top top wines, and that's forty eight dollars a bottle
and it's just drinking beautifully right now. I just had it actually with my
wife the other night, and itwould certainly be a great recommendation for anybody
(46:45):
looking for something to give for Father'sDay. Well, you're not slurring your
words, so you didn't have toomuch wine today yet, So I'm glad.
Last question, real quick, Sowhy when I go to Italy I
can drink like a bottle of wineand then feel fine the sulfights. What's
the difference? Why do we getheadaches? And why does it have to
be in our bottles here? Yeah? So cell fights are naturally in most
(47:09):
wines, right, and it isit is a preservative that most wineries add
when you get these very young, fresh wines that don't have to travel like
I had to. I've had thatsame experience in Italy that are often a
little lower in alcohol, which alsomakes it easier to consume more of it.
It can become a great experience. But those wines don't travel well,
(47:29):
right because the lower and alcohol andif they don't have any sul fights in
them along those lines, it're justyou know, they're really meant for local
consumption. So you just have togo back to Italy and enjoy them there,
you know what. That's a deal. Jeff Zachariyah from from Zachy's a
great place. And it's by theway, it's z A C h y
(47:52):
S no apostrophe zachis dot com andit's it's a really cool place. Jeff,
thank you. Enjoy your weekend,Rob you as well. Great to
catch up. Alrighty, all right, so I've got like a minute right,
Oh my god. I mean Imentioned that I wanted to get to
this Kathy Hokel thing. So I'mreally disturbed at like the partnership for New
(48:14):
York City, the Real Estate Boardof New York, the Citizens Budget Commission.
All of these groups are piling onbecause they want congestion pricing, realizing
how bad it will be for theeconomy in New York, how it will
break the backs and wallets of somany businesses, so many middle class people.
(48:34):
And yet all they keep thinking ofin a narrow view, is we
got to feed the beast of theMTA. How about this, How about
the MTA fix its problems first beforeyou come asking me to make another sacrifice
and give you more money when youcan't even get the basics right. The
MTA has been a problem forever becauseit is just it is. It's a
(48:55):
blob. And here's a message toall the Republican county executives. If this
comes to a vote for the MTAto put off this congestion pricing, you
better instruct your representative on the MTAto vote to kill congestion pricing. All
right, I am out of here. Congratulations by the way to Pat Sajack,
(49:15):
will of fortune as he retired Friday. Last Friday was his or yesterday
was his last show ever. Anyway, folks, thank you so much for
being with me. I will beback here next Saturday at four o'clock.
