Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's all about Sports Canterbury's All Sport Breakfast with Leslie
Murdock and might A ten Megers supporting local crowdly Kiwi
owned and operator News Talks. The'd be We're camped down
in the corner. They couldn't get there. The Crusaders led
by twenty four to ten at halftime. They have won
this game. Hapho Soti Super Rugby the second game here
at sky Sadium. The Crusaders take the points. They win

(00:23):
by thirty one points to twenty four.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Yes, indeed they did. And head coach for the Crusaders
of Courses Rob Penny, and he joins us.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Good morning Rob, good morning Lesi. How are you going?

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Very good? Thanks. We'll put this match into context. First
of all, let me say though, this time last week
you were in Fiji preparing to play that match against
the drawer and it was a big target for the
twenty twenty five season, which you did magnificently. Then you're
back playing short turnaround Friday night again in away match
and you win thirty one twenty four. So what do
you make of it?

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Yeah, obviously really wrapped the nine points in the last
six days, so that's a great credit not only the
playing group because they had to get themselves through, but
also the organization and everyone involved too in the planning,
and there's been a lot of really outstanding planning and
implementation over the last couple of weeks to get down

(01:21):
it's amazing. Sometimes you know, there's a lot of things
you can't control, and Fiji reflecting on that and all
the efforts we went in to mitigate the heat and
the distance of travel and so forth, but the crucial
part that happened for us was five minuts will kick off.
The clouds rolled in, so that dropped the temperature quite significantly,

(01:41):
and you know, we were out in their feet at halftime,
but the boys showed a lot of courage and back
into the game. We were really in a bit of
trouble and there was other heat exhausted boys at the
end of it. So thankfully the clouds rolled in, Leslie,
because otherwise it may have been a different story. But
we got through that, and then last night was another
courageous performance by a number of people, the whole group

(02:03):
really dealing with all the hias early on and having
a lot of positional changes and having to cope withoud
that you know, as well as two yellow cards and
a few decisions that we just just want to check
off to say if we've got them wrong or if
maybe they could have been dealt with differently. But resilience

(02:24):
piece was awesome.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yeah, absolutely, well, I mean the match had so many
talking points, didn't it. In terms of the start, it
was the Hurricanes that scored first. You came rushing back
into the game, some great tries as you mentioned the
Hias and James O'Connor coming on, getting that fifty to
fifty ball and racing under the posts. You know, there
were so many little parts to that game that each

(02:46):
each could have a compartment and you could tear it
all apart. But in the end, the guys have just
got to get out there and instinctively, you know, put
together what their game plan is.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Yeah. Well, you know, there's so much talent in the group,
and we're you know, we're fortunate that the medical team
have done a great job of getting most of our
labs on the park and there's a few more to
come back in the next couple of weeks, which is
which is which is great to have that selection challenge
as opposed to the issues we were having last year.

(03:20):
So yep uh, you know, referring to back on the
grass that the you know, as I say, there's so
much talent there and their ability to cope with those
situations is you know, there's a depth of knowledge there
that that means we don't we don't get too stressed
or too panicked. And that's that's becoming very evident. You know,

(03:43):
the lead leadership group are doing a great job.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Yeah, just the spontaneous skills that we're seeing, which you
know obviously can be planned or unplanned. You know, I'm
probably thinking of Yi Mianau players like that who cherish
the playing minutes that they get. Then someone Scott Barrett
has an enormous match, you know, disrupts the opposition line
out along with Jamie Hannah. And it was interesting actually

(04:06):
listening to the radio commentary team, the Wellington team talking
about Jamie Hannah in particular, and you know, sort of
bemoaning the fact that they don't have players like that
turning up in their roster.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yeah. Well, it's it's a credit the organization, you know,
and Garden that digs deep in that area, and all
the coaches have a lot of important it's a collective,
selectorial area that you know, the Crusaders have always done
very well. You could argue that they do have a

(04:38):
pretty good ex Crusader in there and Zach Gallaha so
and he played pretty well last night. But yeah, I'm
just so proud of our our men. I'm so proud
of someone like Jamie who you know, skipped up, got
an opportunity that a bad run with injuries to his shoulders,
but got those both fixed now and you know he'll

(05:03):
he'll make a rapid rise and progress so athletic, so
skillful and you know, a really good foil along with
Taylor ca Hill coming through and Antonio Shelfoon and then
we've got Liam Jack and the Wings excited about all
that group and they're going to be you know, they're
going to be setting a new a new dinner, Stephie

(05:25):
if you said it's in that middle row.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
It was interesting also listening to the commentary and we
could see it of course ourselves watching the games and
niggle and that we know with these local derby's what
it's like New Zealand teams on New Zealand teams, but
they did seem to be a little bit extra in
that match last night.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Always going to be I think desperate, and you know
it's it's you know, it's tight margins. It's very competitive.
The New Zealand teams when they play each other, they
know each other quite well and they're hammer and tongks

(06:06):
and you know there'll be nothing less expected.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
So I guess it's too really to know. The injury
told David havevely going off any more news on fiction.
Your hi a's and and those yellow cards remain yellow.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
Yeah, that's all good. Disciplinary wise. You know, there'll be
some things that we need to sort out quietly behind
scenes to try to because we've had a few isshes
around the yellow cards inside the twenty two. But no,
the hias have all been cleared, so that's awesome. Davy
will be affess today. But unfortunately it's a similar injury

(06:46):
but on the other leg that he had a couple
of weeks ago, so expecting, you know, expecting the worst,
hoping for the best. Maybe a couple of weeks that
the Kelly's lower calfr Yep, yeah, unfortunate.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
Fingers crossed that those little tendons knit together for them
because you know, yeah, yeah, you want some consistency in
the play that you get.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Anything else, just so important to our group. Two Davis
just such a a glue, you know, for our group,
and as captain they want them to be available as
often as he can. But you know, other boys are
doing a great job stepping up world boarding in particular
and some Blackadder and it's all going well. We'll have
codes back next week as well, so you know we're

(07:35):
not we're not barren in that leadership front.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
No great front row though, great pack set the standard,
didn't it.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
Oh yeah, just again right across the park, you know,
see having to go back into center, Levi going from
center to twelve and the Young nine and Team Combo
just growing in their ability to manage a game that
was hectic and you know, a bit all over the
place at some at points in the game and you

(08:04):
did a terrific job there and taha and yeah, just
so proud the whole groups.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
Yeah, absolutely, as we all are. Thank you very much
for coming to the phone on the day after, and
safe travels back. I know there'll be a bit of
panel beating needing to be done on a few of
the bodies, but.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
There to be a lot of that, I think.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
Yeah, yeah, great great performance in terms of the resilience
and especially that last ten minutes.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
Yeah yeah, thanks very much for the support, Leslie lways
loved talking to you and hope everyone has a great weekend.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Thank you very much. That is Rob Peny, head coach
of the Crusaders, and another win there on top of
the points table.
