El papa León XIV ha iniciado oficialmente su pontificado con una misa solemne ante 200.000 fieles y 150 delegaciones internacionales en la plaza de San Pedro. En su homilía, pidió unidad en la Iglesia y en la humanidad para combatir los prejuicios, el odio y el miedo a lo diferente. Ha señalado como primer deseo una Iglesia unida que trabaje por la paz mundial y el entendimiento interreligioso.
Tras la misa, se reunió con el presidente ucraniano Volodímir Zelenski, quien agradeció el papel del Vaticano en el intento de lograr una paz duradera entre Kiev y Moscú.
La delegación española, encabezada por los reyes Felipe VI y Letizia, expresó su apoyo al nuevo pontífice. Félix Bolaños reafirmó la voluntad del Gobierno español de mantener el diálogo y la cooperación con la Iglesia.
En el plano nacional, el PSOE insiste en trabajar por “la mejor España” frente al “acoso e insulto” de la oposición. Por su parte, el PP prepara su Congreso de julio, con Moreno Bonilla y Mañueco liderando la ponencia política. Carmen Fúnez acusa al entorno de Sánchez de estar marcado por la corrupción.
En política exterior, el ministro Albares se reunirá en Washington con Marco Rubio para abordar el gasto en defensa y los aranceles tras la llegada de Donald Trump a la Casa Blanca.
En Oriente Medio, Israel lanza una nueva ofensiva terrestre sobre Gaza, llamada Operación Carros de Gedeón, tras días de intensos bombardeos. El Ministerio de Salud de Gaza reporta al menos 153 muertos en 24 horas, en una de las escaladas más violentas de la guerra.
