Frogs and toads are surprisingly different. For example, lots of people don’t know that frogs hop while toads crawl.
But now Frog and Toad have the same problem – precious frogspawn has been vanishing from under their noses and their pond is under threat.
Ranger Rae, Apprentice Roxy, Beaver and Dragonfly try to solve a slippery mystery at Bystock Pools.

No, toads have much bumpier skin and their skin
stays quite dry. Frog skinactually looks quite wet.

No, toads prefer to walk and crawl around. Their
legs are much better suited tothat than hopping.

It's more than troublesome. It's illegal!
ROXY (05:08):
Ranger Rae, I thought frogs and toads looked the same.
RANGER RAE (05:12):
No, toads have much bumpier skin and their skin
stays quite dry. Frog skinactually looks quite wet.
TOAD (05:19):
So, are you here to track down this spawn snatcher?
RANGER RAE (05:24):
That's the plan. Well, it's more of a description
of what we hope to do ratherthan a plan.
TOAD (05:30):
Let me just have a look over the pond and see if it jogs
the memory somewhat.
ROXY (05:35):
I thought toads hopped about like frogs?
RANGER RAE (05:38):
No, toads prefer to walk and crawl around. Their
legs are much better suited tothat than hopping.
FROG (05:44):
Get a move on, Toad. Why don't you hop like me? Boing,
boing, boing.
See? Much better.
TOAD (05:52):
You frogs are always in such a rush. We toads like to
take it slow. Enjoy each secondas

Now let me see. A finecollection of spawn you have
there. Appears to be somemissing, though.
FROG (06:14):

TOAD (06:18):
Now that I think about it, I do remember seeing something
down by the spawn.

TOAD (06:25):

A shark? Actually, no, that's impossible.

So a human took the spawn. That's not good. But at
least it gives us a chance ofgetting it back.

my spawn!

It was a lone human with a jar.
FROG (06:51):
Right, let's go catch that human.
(Bird call) Oh, come on, anotherbird attack! Better get ready to
dodge. Are you with me, Toad?

No, I think I'll stay put, thank you.

Watch out Toad, it's going to grab you.

What happened? I was sure that bird was going to grab
Toad.
RANGER RAE (07:18):
Toads are able to release a smelly poison from
their skin, perfect for puttingpredators off.
TOAD (07:24):
Yes, I find all that desperate, hopping frog does
rather undignified and uncouth.Best of luck with the spawn

Dragonfly have any updates.

So, Wildlifers, we know it was a human who took the Frog
spawn. That should help us trackhim down. Also, I didn't know

toads amazing?

As a matter of fact, I did see someone on a walk around
the ponds. But no sign of Frogspawn.

Yeah, I have some here. Just getting some pretty
wildflowers now too.

You might not be aware of this, but it's actually
against the law to collect manytypes of Frog spawn from parks
like this.

Frogs are fantastic.
I'm a teacher. The wildflowersare for our nature table, and
the children really wanted tosee tadpoles hatch from Frog
spawn, so I collected some inthis jar.
