Speaker 1 (00:00):
Collins back and across. I have it, digs it up,
but it's into the net. And Danielle Collins, Oh my,
listen to this crouch. He's blowing kisses to them. Oh
this is fantastic.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Well oh she oh my, she just kissed her hand
and then smacked her rear.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (00:20):
Good ay, and welcome to the tennis for Day five
of AO twenty twenty five. John Juveniles with all the
big news from Melbourne Park every day of the main draw.
Today on the Tennis, learn a TN snares the bear.
Speaker 5 (00:32):
I mean, I was definitely hoping it wasn't going to
go to a fist Sunbreaker.
Speaker 4 (00:35):
Demon flies the flag for Australia as Destiny socumbs to Danielle.
Speaker 6 (00:39):
You know, I was thinking during the match, I was like,
if I'm out here, I might as well just take
that big fat paycheck.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
Plus a preview of Day six and Tennis's new it
kid Jill Fonseco reflects on a whirlwind major debut.
Speaker 7 (00:52):
Super a nice fruit and it's super good to have
someone from their family true for me.
Speaker 8 (00:58):
That's all ahead.
Speaker 9 (00:58):
On the tennis, Lerner Tien, the nineteen year old match
points he serves down the middle, picked up by Medvedev.
Speaker 8 (01:13):
It's an old.
Speaker 10 (01:14):
Ball real.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
American rising star Lerner Tien has held firm against a
rampaging Daniel Medvedev, eliminating the twenty twenty four finalist in
a five set marathon on Margaret Corderena. Medvedev started a
long way off his usual level, broken twice by the
American teen, who consolidated his second break in the ninth
game to snatch a one set lead. The pair exchanged
(01:43):
six breaks of serve in a dramatic second set that
ended in a tiebreaker. Tien the beneficiary of four unforced
errors from his increasingly frustrated opponent, extending his lead to
two sets. Incredibly, the nineteen year old found himself with
a match point in the third set tiebreaker. Medvedev came
through with a clutchase that turned the battle on its head.
(02:04):
With the match now on his racket, the Russian went
to work, winning eighty percent of serving points and fifty
eight percent of receiving points in a blistering twenty six
minute display. But Tian wasn't done yet, elevating his level
in the deciding set. He found a breakthrough in the
fourth game, but it was short lived. As Medvedev broke
(02:24):
back and held for three all as the match entered
a fifth hour. It ultimately became a war of attrition,
but it was Tien who lasted the distance, prevailing six
to three, seven six six ' seven one six, seven
to six to send Medvedev packing and extend his career
best Grand Slam result.
Speaker 5 (02:44):
Yeah, I mean, losing the third was tough after playing
for that long. I had a match point. I mean,
I didn't really get to touch the ball. I don't
think I think it was a niece. But yeah, I
mean that was a little disappointing to see a fourth after,
you know, fighting back from a breakdown in that third.
But I want to finish it up fairly quick. But
(03:04):
I also wanted to start the fifth serving, so you know,
I scrapped out that game at five and.
Speaker 8 (03:12):
It all worked out.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
He'll now face Corentine Moute in the third round.
Speaker 11 (03:16):
Ready to go, Serve t Love from the School Kate
Center puts it away with a swinging volley into the
deuce corner. Pushed early cruise let Junick Center into the
third round with the four set win over Tristan's Schoolkate.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
The title defensive Janick Sinner remains intact despite a first
set slip up against Ozzie wildcard Tristan school Kate. Belying
his lowly ranking, the world number one sixty seven, produced
a stunning first set breaking Cinner in a crucial tenth game,
but the world number one repaid the gesture and the
second set, breaking Schoolkate to love with a trademark fourhand
(03:53):
winner down the line. He then added insult to injury
in the third, breaking the Aussie three more times from there.
The result was a fatacom play a Sinner romped to
a four to six six four six one sixty three victory.
Speaker 10 (04:05):
I feel like, you know, in every tournament there is
always you know, someone who who comes in and he
just plays very well. So you know, as I said,
every round here is very tough. Everyone who is you
know in a first round or second run or third
round or serves to be there. So you know, it's again,
it was a very tough match. I can improve. Yes,
(04:27):
you know, we saw this today. I was struggling a
bit with the wind. It was quite quite breezy, but yeah,
I take it.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
His next opponent will be Marcos Giron, who accounted for
Thomas Martin Etcheveri in a five set tug of war.
Speaker 8 (04:41):
Oh god.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
Runa is back in the third round of the Australian
Open for the second time, downing Mateo Berrettini in a
three and a half hour battle. After an early exchange
of breaks, the first set went to a tie break,
which the Danish thirteenth seed won easily, but Berrettini, a
former semi finalist in Melbourne, elevated his game in the
second se yet, capitalizing on Runa's second serve deficiencies and
(05:03):
using his net game to maximum effect to break twice
and square the match. But it was the most he
could muster against the feisty Dane, who wrestled back the
ascendency in the third and saved set points at six,
five and the fourth before sealing the win in another tiebreak.
The final score line seven six two six six three
seven six.
Speaker 12 (05:23):
It was crazy, It was unbelievable mess. You know, I
had the early break in the fourth set, but she
played a very good game, you know, made it tricky
for me. And at the end there was a huge battle,
you know, whoever was messing important moments. But you know,
I can only say what an episodere guys, so thank
you so much for bringing that energy.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
Runa's third round opponent will be me and me at
Katzmanovich who upset who be her catch earlier today. More
on that result later in the episode.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
Ready to go with this second serve? Good. Colin's back
and cross I have a digs it up, but it's
into the net. And Danielle Collins, Oh she's got some attitude.
Oh my, listen to this crowd. He's only kisses to them.
She says, great match, and I don't think any hostility
between the two players. But Colin's giving it to this
(06:09):
Aussie crowd and she's walking right to them. More kiss
is blown an applause. Oh this is fantastic.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Well oh she oh my, she just kissed her hand
and then smacked her rear.
Speaker 13 (06:24):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
Danielle Collins has ended destiny Iava's career best run in
a major and a frosty three set contest. The twenty
twenty two finalists pipped the Aussie qualifier in an opening
set tiebreak before Aava returned served to draw level at
a set all, but with the home crowd squarely in
the Iava corner on Kia Arena, the American tent seed
(06:47):
summoned her college tennis pedigree in a pulsating dogfight, Colin's
breaking the Australian in the sixth game of the decider,
and two games later converted her second match point with
a blistering backhand winner, blowing theatrical kisses to the boisterous crowd.
Colin's later clarifying in her postmatch media conference how much
she enjoyed the battle with not only her opponent, but
(07:09):
with the crowd.
Speaker 6 (07:09):
I loved it. I like, you know, I've been doing
this in my whole life, and I love playing in
a crowd that has energy regardless of what side they're on.
And I'm somebody too, like you know, it kind of
just like motivates me even more. So It's kind of
a good thing, especially when I'm not playing that well.
So I think it really helped me in the end
(07:31):
and just helped me concentrate more and challenged me at
times and just yeah, pushed me kind of through the
finish line. I was really happy to like in the end,
when I finally got momentum, I'm like, well, I'm going
to be out here for two and a half hours
and putting up with all these people, I might.
Speaker 14 (07:49):
As well just take the bigger paycheck, right.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
Colin's next opponent will be compatriot Madison Keys, who had
a three set tussle with qualify Elena Gabriella Russ the
nineteenth said played in a rassive brand of tennis, with
thirty seven winners paired with forty four unforced errors as
she progressed seven six two six seven five.
Speaker 13 (08:08):
I feel good, Yeah, Phil, that was, you know, not
the prettiest tennis and really had to guard it out.
And I think she played a really high level, but yeah, cool.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
Meantime, US Open semi finalist Francis Tiafo has been stunned
by world number fifty nine Fabian Marajan, the Hungarians, saving
ten break points in the fourth set and going on
a seven game rampage into the fifth to steal the
match from Tirfo's grasp. Marajan progressing to the third round
in Melbourne for the second time six seven sixty four
(08:43):
three six sixty four sixty one.
Speaker 15 (08:45):
There was a lot of up and downs during the match,
and yeah, something changed in the in the fourth set
when I said, like turn break points maybe or maybe five,
I don't remember. I think that was a turning point
and something changed during the last set. And yeah, I'm
(09:08):
just really happy to beat T four because he's a
great player, he's very strong.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
And more good news for the Italians. As women's fourth
seag Jasmine Paulini ended the run of Mexico's Renata Zarazua
in straight sets to progress to the round of thirty two.
Speaker 16 (09:26):
A slice from Aradicanu, A slice white from Anamova. Emma
Radicanu is in the Australian Open third round for the
very first time. She beats Amanda Anisimova in their first
meeting six three seventy five.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
What's a victory Day five of the Australian Open. And
it's finally happened. The All American infiltration has happened and
I'm suddenly on the out. Blair Henley, welcome to the tennis.
Speaker 14 (09:50):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
What stay are you from.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
I am from Florida but currently live in Texas.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Okay, Lin Levi Huddleston, which state the opposite, and I'm
in Washington State where I was until I moved to Melbourne.
And Jill Crabs joining us on the tennis. Welcome Jill
in your state I'm from.
Speaker 17 (10:05):
The smallest state in the United States. I'm from Rhode Island.
Oh really, yes, but I live in California.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
Okay, well, we're covering a good geographical spread of your nation.
We are today we are going to have a look
at a couple of interesting results from day five. We'll
start with the women. And I loved watching this match
today at on Kia Arena Emma Radikanu getting the job
done six three seven five against her good friend Amanda
and Nissimova. A battle of contrasting styles out there.
Speaker 18 (10:29):
Jill, Yeah, a little bit. I mean, you know, Anasamova.
Speaker 17 (10:32):
First of all, it's very tough to play friends and
I think you just it's hard to block that out.
Speaker 18 (10:37):
But Anasimova is the type of player.
Speaker 17 (10:39):
She's deceptive, right, She's got that great length on the ball,
hits a very clean ball striker.
Speaker 18 (10:45):
I wouldn't say.
Speaker 17 (10:45):
They're hugely different because Radikanu is also a very strong baseliner,
but she does have a little bit more shape. She
can be bring more variety. But I think this had
to do with, you know, Radi Khanu has mentioned in
her post season her preseason that she's worked a lot
on the fitness, which has been a huge impact for her.
And I think just those little things, because that helps
(11:08):
you feel more confident when you walk out into the court,
knowing that you can last, that you can sustain and
be better physically than your opponent. And I think that's
been a huge mental boost for her in my opinion.
But this was always going to be a tough match.
I mean, I think there's been a lot of tough
matches and this could have gone either way. I think
Anna Simona and Anismova broke down a little bit as
far as in the longer rallies, and I think Rada
(11:30):
Kane was just a little bit tougher and being able
to stay in those longer rallies and the big moments.
Speaker 14 (11:35):
Yeah, that was impressive.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
And you know what, you can always guys, I don't
know if you know this about me yet, rely on
me for the hair commentary. Okay, want a shout out
to Amanda and Nisimova dyed dark hair dark brown and
I saw her in the hallway and I was like,
it looks really good and she said, it's taken me
ten years to get up the guts to do it.
So ten years later, Amanda, we love the brown hair
like the blonde hair too, but I love a change.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
Well, we've seen some big upsets so far in the
first coupleunds. Another one today, Huby hercatch the eighteenth seed
gone in straight sets at the hands of me and
mir Katsmanovich. The score line six ' four, six four,
six ' two. It was all over in less than
two hours, Jill.
Speaker 17 (12:12):
It was an incredible performance from ketch Monovich, actually taught
to one of my colleagues who commentated the whole match.
And as good as Hube is and his and his serve,
he was actually broken in each shet very early on,
which I think surprised everybody because normally comes out firing.
But ketch management kesh Monovich was outstanding. I mean, he
(12:32):
was playing so well throughout throughout the whole match. I
think he got to the semi finals of a tournament
prior to come in here. I think that's very helpful
when you have wins under your belt, you have matches
under your belt, that gives you a lot of confidence
coming in that's also a matchup. I don't think that
would bother him that much off the ground, in particular
because I feel like as soon as he was able
(12:54):
to get some of the returns back and play and
get into the rally. I think Hube's ball I think
he would like. And so even though I'm surprised by
the score line that it was straight sets, I think
ketch Manitvich has been playing outstanding throughout this whole beginning
of the year.
Speaker 14 (13:12):
So far, and tough for Huey.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
But it's so interesting coming into a season where he's
changed his team. He's got Massu and Lindel in his corner,
he's changed his.
Speaker 14 (13:21):
Cat and he's changed his racket.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Everything is new, and I feel like it's been tough
for him not to see some encouraging results right off
the bat. He didn't have a spectacular United Cup and
then comes here and runs into Ketchmanovich, who, as you mentioned,
he's a really good player. I don't think there's any
shame in losing to Mia Mirror. However, I think it's
tough when you're trying all these new things. You're looking
(13:46):
for maybe a slightly different path, and things aren't quite clicking.
And as you said, broken early faced eleven break points
Mia mir Ketchmanovich only face two and save them both,
and he'd be Hercotch and LEVI, I don't know if
you can shed some light on this, but the ATV
has these serve effectiveness stats that it puts into account
(14:07):
several different factors and TV herdcotch was a top that
stat for most of last year, so one of the
best serves on tour. So that's amazing to see eleven
break points faced from him.
Speaker 12 (14:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 19 (14:19):
No, So last year we came up with all these
biomechanics stats for the serve and we looked at different
aspects of the serf. How much you bending your knees,
how fast are your hips moving, And we looked at
Huby as someone to model after and say, okay, this
is what this is what good looks like. Now how
do the other players compare? So for sure, he's got
(14:39):
a fantastic serve. He is at the top of the charts,
I think and PATCHI pair card just eclips Vere, but
I think her catch is either three or four and
he he's you know, two a lot of the year.
So a very great first serve. One thing I saw
today was that his second serve let him down a
little bit. So he you know, he hit six double fall,
(15:00):
it's one on a break point, like you mentioned he
was broken very early often in all sets, and then
the unforced errors were just a bit too high, you know.
I think he had thirty eight unforced errors so well,
thirty eight to twelve, So it's yeah, it's just it
wasn't a super clean match from Hubie I think. But yeah,
he didn't win points on his second serve. He was
(15:21):
down about seventeen percent from his average in terms of
when he hits a second serve, is he winning that point?
Down seventeen percent And if you look at the difference
between Ketchmanovich and Hoby, it's a thirty one percent difference.
So it's just a massive difference in terms of how
easy they were able to hold their serve. On the
Biomex stuff. We did take a look at the leg drive,
(15:42):
which is how fast those hips are moving as you
go up into your serve impact, and he was down
twenty percent from the United Cup. So it just seemed
like he was struggling a little bit on his serve
to get that acceleration and to see his his usual
serve come out.
Speaker 17 (15:58):
And just adding to what saying about everything new, I mean,
these players in the off season is a time they
don't get a lot of time off, right, So it's
a time to work on things, whether it's fitness, something
in your stroke, some new shot that you're working on.
So a lot of times, not a lot, but maybe
occasionally at the beginning of the year, you might not
(16:18):
see the results right away, right because it does take time.
I mean, these players are working on things, they're trying
to get better, and they're willing to use matches.
Speaker 18 (16:26):
Okay, yes you want to peak for a slam, but
they're willing.
Speaker 17 (16:28):
To use matches to try and push them to a
better level, and it might not happen right away. So
I always gauge not necessarily results right away at the
beginning of the year. Yes, you might have some losses,
but we know all these players are looking at long term.
It's a process, and so I think we have to
get a time because he's had new coaches, new voices
(16:48):
in his head, he's trying new things.
Speaker 18 (16:50):
So I don't know. I kind of look at it
from that perspective as well.
Speaker 3 (16:53):
As a player, Were you good at thinking big picture?
Because I feel like it's really easy for the coaches
to think, yeah, big picture.
Speaker 14 (17:00):
As a player, it's so it's very.
Speaker 18 (17:02):
Tough and it was.
Speaker 17 (17:04):
It just kind of like you train on the court
all the time, you kind of have to train your
mind a little bit too, not only to prep in
me mentally strong, but to also try and have that
mindset of having it be a process and not so
result oriented all the time. But of course you want
to win, but it's not the easiest thing, yes, but
you hope to work on that all the time.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
Yes. All right, let's look ahead now to day six
and a couple of interesting matches on the agenda. First
of all, it'll be Palavadosa, the women's eleventh seed, who's
come through against Wang Shin Knew and Talia Gibson to
reach the third round. Against Marta Kostyuk.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
I'm expecting some massive hitting, which I'm very excited about.
But Paula Badosa, of course, the comeback player of the
year last year, went from just inside the top seventy
to inside the top fifteen, so good to see her
back playing good tennis.
Speaker 14 (17:55):
Looks physically healthy.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
She certainly showed that in her second round match that
was quite straightforward. And she's also beat Marta Kostyuk the
last three times they've played a full match. She had
a retirement, I think a couple of years ago. So
I think Paula Vadosa on paper gets the win. But
Marta Kostyak plays really well in Australia, of course, a
quarter finalist here last year.
Speaker 19 (18:16):
The win predictor is favoring about two to one in
favor of Paula Badosa, so yeah, it's it's quite favored
towards her. But when you look at the head to head,
I think that makes a lot of sense. But one
thing that we did see from Costok over the years,
going back from I think twenty three to twenty five,
is she takes what we call hunting third shot fourhand,
(18:39):
but it's basically when you get that return, how often
are you taking a fourhand versus a backhand? And she's
just slowly creeped up from like sixty two percent to
now seventy percent. So I think we can see her,
you know, being aggressive on that return or getting that
return and then taking command. But you know, Paula Badosa
hits a really big ball. She currently outside the top ten,
(19:02):
but her some of her stats don't look like it,
like she's a clip seeing the top ten benchmark in
terms of speed, So she's hitting like one hundred and
twenty k's on her forehand, so it's like you're saying,
like it's going to be a slugfest out there, so
it will be a lot of fun to watch.
Speaker 17 (19:16):
I think, first of all, I love the way these
two play for different reasons. I love the way Paula
Budosa hits the ball off the ground, heavy forehand, moves
exceptionally well days solow to the ground. But they're very
different and she's a very consistent player, has a lot
of power behind her shots in Kostyuk also, but a.
Speaker 18 (19:36):
More all around player.
Speaker 17 (19:38):
I love that she likes to attack, isn't afraid to
come forward, and she's had that for years and she's
now just kind of come together. She has Sandra as
her coach, who is very calm. It is a very
common presence in her box and has brought so much,
especially backing her. You have to trust your team and
who's around you, and she loves having Sandra in her corner.
(20:00):
But I don't know this one. I'm surprised as too
to Wine. This one's up in the air for me.
They're both playing very good. As Blair mentioned, Costyak plays
very good in Australia.
Speaker 18 (20:10):
So I don't know. This one's like a toss up
for me. I don't I think it's like fifty to fifty.
Speaker 8 (20:15):
Yeah that's fair.
Speaker 14 (20:16):
Yeah, okay, model's not always right.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
And I had a fun fact to this conversation. One
of the things that I have thoroughly enjoyed about watching
Marta Costiyak over the past year is seeing her with
her daughter or.
Speaker 14 (20:28):
Her I was gonna say her daughter, her dog.
Speaker 3 (20:30):
Her dog Aanda Mander, who is is a combination of
her name Marta and if it were a girl, it
would have been Mandra for Xandra, her coach, but it's
a voice, so it's Mander. But I asked if she
could bring Vander with her if he was here, and
the dog has to have a one month quarantine to come.
Speaker 14 (20:52):
To Ustai, which I was not aware of. Yeah, never
forget Oh my gosh.
Speaker 3 (20:59):
Yes, Well, unfortunately no Mander around for Marta Costi Actu'll
have to make do without.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
I'd see if she can get pallor on a lace to.
Speaker 8 (21:10):
The other.
Speaker 16 (21:11):
Well done.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
The other sport lot Matchday six is the big one.
Nok Djokovic, Thomas Mahautch.
Speaker 17 (21:17):
Yeah that I mean, I think he's I mean, you
can't go against Jokovic hardly ever, right, I mean, he
tends to find a way through in so many of
these matches. What's interesting, he is lost of set in
his first and second round, so hasn't looked like super sharp,
I guess you could say, but the.
Speaker 18 (21:32):
Opponents played well.
Speaker 17 (21:33):
I mean Bazava already played extremely well in the first
round as well as Faria.
Speaker 18 (21:39):
But Mahatch had a long.
Speaker 17 (21:40):
Five set match against Opelka that was an epic and
how he turns up physically. I know, he had to
retire in the United Cup recently in Sydney, so that
was a little bit tough for him.
Speaker 18 (21:51):
I mean, who knows.
Speaker 17 (21:51):
Sometimes you want to, like if there's a little niggle,
you want to make sure you're okay for the Australian
Open and preparing to come here. But again another situation
where I think think Mahach knows he has nothing to lose.
I mean, he's definitely going to go out swinging, and
Djokovic knows that as well. But I mean he's he's
the best obviously here in Australia. So it's hard to
go against Novak.
Speaker 19 (22:11):
You know, that's a tough one. I think that he
does a lot right out there, and so it's hard
to say what could he do better. I was looking
at his stats, and there are some decreases that we've seen,
like from you know, twenty twenty three to twenty twenty five.
His first serve points one is just decreasing by maybe
five percent, So he's maybe not as sharp as he
(22:31):
was back in twenty twenty three. But you know, if
you look on paper, between all of the different metrics,
you know, like serve and play return and play speeds,
it's they favored Djokovic quite a bit in terms of
his ability to just play the game well and consistently.
(22:52):
But you know, I think Mahatch can hit a winner
from anywhere on the court, and he can be very explosive,
and I think maybe maybe Djokovic's movement isn't quite what
we've seen in the past, and so maybe there's a
weakness there. But I think in general, in what the
win predictor would say is that it's going to be
(23:13):
a Djokovic win, but we'll have to see because Mahach
can execute.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
So that's right, But Mahach has done it before he
beat Djokovic.
Speaker 14 (23:21):
In Geneva last year.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
Obviously different service, but I did think it was interesting
that that score line was six ' four love six
six ' one, and that to me says that Mahach
didn't panic, And I think that is key against Novak Djokovic,
because I think it's it's very possible to feel smothered
by what he's able to do on the tennis court.
But I love the narrative of this being a match
(23:42):
between Mahach, the self professed short short king, taking on
the king of tennis in Novak Djokovic. Yeah, the headlines
just write themselves, guys.
Speaker 4 (23:53):
That's a royal headline right there. Second sermuch boy hammers
the forehand, the back end.
Speaker 1 (24:01):
It's done well by Boyer to get it back in
huge four hands from Dominais finished up the match. He
wins six ' two six four sixty three. The number
eight seats through to the third round.
Speaker 14 (24:12):
Yes again with the minimum of fuss.
Speaker 4 (24:15):
Alex Demenoor continues to set the standard for the home nation,
cruising into the third round in a straight sets win
over Tristan Boyer. The American qualifier jumped out of the
blocks to break the demon's opening serve, but it was
the first and only occasion he did so. For the match,
Demonol putting on the burners, winning the next six games
to take the set six to two before completing the
(24:35):
deal six four sixty three.
Speaker 20 (24:37):
I thought he played some some pre special stuff to
start off that match, and more than anything for me,
it's all right, let's let's let's go back to the well,
let's keep digging. And you know, if he can keep
on doing that for three four hours and you shake
his hand, but more often than not, it's probably going
(24:59):
to go on my side, and I'm going to have
opportunities to kind of come back. And I just told
myself to stay with it and stay solid.
Speaker 4 (25:09):
Your next face Argentine Francisco Sodwundelow. It was a lightning
day session on Rod Laver Arena with Demeno and Igersh
Fiontek's matches taking only three hours of combined court time.
Fiontech rinsed through Rebecca Shramkova in an hour and a minute,
six love, six to two.
Speaker 21 (25:26):
Well, for sure, I thought, you know, pretty confident and
I started them ach well, so I just kept going
and it was good to play in it such an
efficient way and just finish it quick and also you know,
just feel the court and how it is in early.
Speaker 4 (25:41):
As mentioned earlier, her next opponent will be Emmea Rettakanu,
who ousted the big hitting Amanda and Nissimova in straight sets.
Speaker 22 (25:47):
I'm looking forward to going out there and testing my
game against the bass because yeah, ultimately, like you play
tennis and you live for these matches, so it's going
to be a great buzz of adrenaline.
Speaker 4 (25:58):
Women's eight seed emmenav was put through her paces by
China's Wang Shi Yu in a topsy turvy battle featuring
thirteen breaks of serve and multiple lead changes. In the
final set. The American prevailed six three, three six six four.
Speaker 23 (26:11):
I think I was able to find something there at
the end, and it was it was really tough the
whole time, and I knew it was going to be
that way, so yeah, I think I was ready to
handle it, and yeah, just super tough there at the
end and found some good tennis there in the last game.
Speaker 4 (26:27):
She'll now I face ons Jibur in the third round,
the three time Grand Slam finalists, taking care of Camilla
Osorio in straight sets despite taking a medical time out
for her asthma, where she struggled to breathe.
Speaker 24 (26:39):
It is very tough to.
Speaker 8 (26:43):
Play.
Speaker 24 (26:43):
I had to kind of not play long rallies. I
know I was playing Camilla today, not the best opponent
when you're in this condition. But I apologized at the
end of, you know, the match, because I really don't
want to behave like this on the court. But yeah,
I tried to manage through. Likely I was playing really good.
(27:04):
That really kind of helped me unpop me. But to
be honest with you, if I lost the first set,
that I would have been very difficult to continue.
Speaker 4 (27:11):
On the men's side, fourth seed Taylor Fritz dropped just
three games in his second round victory of a Christian Garden.
He spoke to producer Alexia Mitchell about his campaign, in
which he's considered just eight games so far.
Speaker 25 (27:23):
Taylor, welcome to the tennis You're twenty twenty four US
Open finalists. In what ways does this campaign feel different
knowing that you can go the distance?
Speaker 20 (27:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 26 (27:33):
I think I think the US Open final just give
me a lot of confidence in my game that I
don't need to play like incredible or like out of
my mind to produce like a big slam run. I think,
you know, that in that run, I felt like I
was playing solid, you know, very within myself repeatable tennis.
So yeah, I mean gives me a lot of confidence
knowing that if I'm if I'm very like mentally locked
(27:54):
in and feeling physically good and you know, taking care
of what I need to take care of, then you know,
I can go deep into tournaments.
Speaker 25 (28:01):
And a lot of people describe the sort of edge
that you have over other players. Is this grittiness and
a gutsy way of playing. Where did you develop that attribute?
Speaker 26 (28:13):
I feel like it's just something that that I've I've
always had and my whole, my whole life has been
centered around sports. Even when I wasn't specifically playing only tennis,
I was playing other other sports, and I just that's
because I just I love to compete and I love
to I don't know, I love to compete. I love
to fight.
Speaker 21 (28:32):
It.
Speaker 26 (28:32):
It's kind of like what my whole whole life's revolved around.
So it's it's always been something that's just you know,
very me.
Speaker 25 (28:41):
Was there say a family member or maybe a tennis
player that you thought, maybe I'll also want to play
like that, and that could be where you got it from.
Speaker 26 (28:50):
No, I think there's tennis players I wanted to play like,
but it wasn't. That was more like their game. It
wasn't the I guess the mentality and like the mental
side of things, you know, I think how I how
I am with that is just it's just because of
my love for competing and being a competitor.
Speaker 25 (29:08):
You've got a great competitor up next in Gale one Face.
He's moving well, he's serving well. How do you combat him?
Speaker 26 (29:16):
Yeah, it's tough. It's tough. Obviously, he's been playing really
well lately, a title last week, third round you know,
so far this week, and super happy for him, by
the way. He's a great guy. I've always gotten along
really well with Gail and so happy to see him
doing well. And it's going to be a tough match
(29:39):
the way that, like you said, the way that he
moves and the way that he serves. You know, I'm
gonna have to also serve well, and I'm gonna have
to you know, be very aggressive and do it well.
Speaker 4 (29:48):
It will be mont Face's first third round match in
Australia since twenty twenty two, after he ground out a
straight sets win over Daniel Altmeyer after achieving all he's
ever wanted in tennis, the Frenchman will be playing with
a scary sense of freedom.
Speaker 27 (30:01):
No I can or I can finish. Now I think
I've done what they want in a way, and if
I don't miss so you know, I'm happy. Or as
I always say from day one, you know, for me,
the most important is the health. You know, it's just
a part of my life. It's very nice, beautiful.
Speaker 1 (30:23):
You know.
Speaker 27 (30:23):
Thennise give me everything you know I can even imagine.
So I'm already blessed.
Speaker 4 (30:31):
Theress is Elena rabaik Anda has continued her perfect run
into the third round, dropping just five games for the tournament,
today wiping Ivayovich off the court six love six ' three.
Not her best serving day, with only half of her
first serves landing in, but it's a scary proposition. If
she can improve it under new coach Goran Ivanizovitch.
Speaker 28 (30:51):
Well, if I can serve better, it's it's even better.
I mean, obviously I need to work on my serve
and especially when it's winned, it's not easy. So I
think still it's possible to make some improvements. Today I
think myso was not working really well. So Hopefully I
can improve it for the next match.
Speaker 4 (31:11):
Rebike and his first true test could come in the
form of Diana Yastremska in the third round. Most of
the top seeds we're getting it done today, with ninth
seed Daria Kasatkina crushing Wang Yafan six two six love.
Awaiting her in the round of thirty two will be
twenty fourth seed Yulia Patinsova. Well, if you're listening a
couple of episodes ago, you might remember the story of
(31:32):
ever Lease, the lucky loser whose gamble paid off well. Today,
her dream continued after a three set win of a
frenchwoman Varvara Grotscheva. That's another ninety thousand Australian dollars in
the bank and she could go even further with world
number eighty two Jakaline Christian in the next round.
Speaker 29 (31:49):
Just some winning feeling is incredible, especially as a like
a loser. I was always saying telling myself in the
third set, listen you you could have been at home
by now, but you're on court, so try and joining it,
try making the best out of it. And I'm incredibly
happy that I'm in the third round for the first
time in my life, so I'm not complaining at all.
Speaker 4 (32:09):
In other Day five results, Veronica Kudemettova overcame Katie Bolter
in three sets, Beatriz Hadajmeyer a comfortable winner over Erica Andreva,
and Elinas Fittelina too good for Caroline dollar Hyde. In
the men's draw, Alex Michelson ended the run of Ozzie
James McCabe. He plays Karen Hutchenov, who beat Gabriel Diello.
Ben Shelton threw in four sets of a Pablo Corgno
(32:31):
Busta to face Lorenzo Mazzetti, who took care of Dennis Shapovalov,
while Lorenzo Sanego ended the run of Brazilian teen sensation
Duel Fonseca well. He may have bowed out in the
second round today, but Duel Fonseca leaves Melbourne with his
head held high and a new found fame on the
global tennis stage. The eighteen year old stunning straight sets
(32:53):
victory over Andre Rublev was one of the highlights of
the first week of competition, and before he packed his bags,
producer Ersin Kadera spent some time with the teenager and
his twenty year old brother Leo, who accompanied Duo on
his journey down under.
Speaker 30 (33:07):
Can you tell me what it's like for the two
of you to come here and well travel the world
together in some way?
Speaker 7 (33:14):
Well, I'll say first, for me, he's a privilege to
have someone off of my family travel with me. After
my turn round, I just my mom just called me,
I'm gonna send your brother to Australia. And then they said, okay,
well that's super super nice, super excited and it's super
good to have someone from your family just I think
(33:37):
a long way from home and tune for me and yeah,
just enjoyed the moments being here with him.
Speaker 30 (33:47):
And for you, what's it been like?
Speaker 31 (33:49):
Man, it's been like a dream coming true.
Speaker 3 (33:51):
You know.
Speaker 31 (33:52):
When the opportunity arrived to come to Australia again and
keep his good moment, just really, I didn't think twice
and just send it like send you out to Australia.
I came here on Saturday and all the moments I've
been trying to enjoy the most.
Speaker 30 (34:09):
What do you think your role is here?
Speaker 31 (34:12):
I'm just trying to be close to him and make
his his time here easier, you know, because it's hard
for him to to stay out of home too much time,
not too many people that he knows, you know, just
he and his coaches, away from friends, family, just try
to be to make his moments easier. And yeah, that's.
Speaker 30 (34:34):
It, you know, and you get to celebrate your success
with your brother. I think that's very special as well.
Speaker 8 (34:40):
For sure, for sure, it's very special.
Speaker 7 (34:42):
I think that before after every victory, I tried to
call my parents and they they he always he goes
to the camera and say hi.
Speaker 8 (34:52):
And now he's here cheering for me.
Speaker 7 (34:55):
And it's super nice to have someone, like I said,
for my for my family.
Speaker 8 (35:00):
Around here and ensuring for me. And it's good for
the Mantle. Also.
Speaker 7 (35:05):
It travel a lot with my coaches, so getting someone
new that you're very close and it's very special and yeah,
we're enjoying you a lot.
Speaker 4 (35:14):
Fonseca is expected to break into the ATP top hundred
following his performance in Melbourne.
Speaker 8 (35:22):
That's all for.
