Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's time to get inside the Giants. Hunt's let's go.
Let's go Giants. Giants give me some job.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Part of the Giants podcast Network. Let's roll.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Welcome to another edition of the Giants Tottle Podcast, brought
to you by Citizens, the official bank of the New
York Football Giants. I'm your host, John Schmelk. We like
to talk to this guy at least once every season
and every offseason every year, so we figure at the
bye we'll bring in Chris Busy Nano from Giants Insider
to talk some Giants football and Chris, you know, usually
the bye wee, you can relax a little bit, you
can stay calm, and you know, things come as you wait.

(00:32):
You can watch other games. Not a whole lot going on,
but not the case for the Giants. I guess we
did get to enjoy a football Sunday. But early Monday
morning news breaking the Giants making a change of quarterback,
going with Tommy DeVito as the starter this week. Drew
Locke is the backup, Daniel Jones as the number three.
Just give me your reaction and then we can kind
of dig into it a little bit.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Not surprise, I think we will expect it Daniel to
be betched. Right, A couple of things came into play.
One just wasn't playing good enough. The Carolina loss was
not pretty, and the Elfant in the room John, where
he has that twenty three million dollar injury settlement if

(01:14):
he can't pass a physical in March. And now, look,
Joe Shane and Brian Dable will never say that, but
we know that played into it. You can't come out
and say, well, we're gonna sit in because we have
this settlement, because that would be a problem with the
players Union. So as a combination of all that, that's
why Daniel's number three. They're gonna take a look at
Tommy again, which is not a surprise. I know a

(01:35):
lot of people are stunned by that because Locke is
making five million. I'm not surprised by it at all.
The simple fact is John, is that Daniel and Drew
Locke will not be on this roster in twenty twenty five,
and they're gonna look at Tommy again. He did some
good things with Davile last season. They gonna look at
him pretty hard again to see if he is gonna
be honest roster in twenty twenty five. So That's what

(01:57):
it comes down to. Like you said, not a quite
bye week, and Monday morning we all got the news
that we were pretty much expecting. And if you did
not expect Daniel Jones to be sitting for the future,
then I don't know what planet you've been on this season,
because so without question, this was a no brainer and

(02:18):
it's now official.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Yeah, the team was four and six, you know, it's
a different conversation, right, absolutely, And his numbers are better,
and they're not lasting the league in scoring. It's a
much more difficult situation. And then the business park becomes
much less important. Right, you're winning football games and all
that sort of stuff. But the bottom line here is
that the reason they made the change was because of performance.
I mean, the team is averaging fewer points per game
than any other team. You go to Munich against one

(02:42):
of the worst defenses in football and you only score
seventeen points. And you know, I think all this thought
when the Giants decided to bring Daniel back at the
end of the twenty twenty season, and I said this
with Paul on Big Bill Kickoff on Monday. You know
the goal there was that that was the floor of
his performance, right, and you would hope that he will
continue to improve from there. With more years undertable, you

(03:02):
get a better line in front of him, better weapons
around him, and you would see an improvement in his
numbers and the production. You know, last year you can
throw out it was such a mess everything going on
around him. He didn't have a chance. But this year, look,
the protection was better, the weapons were better, but the
performance and the offense which comes from then again, it's
not all the quarterback. There's that other things we'll talk

(03:23):
about in this podcast that need to get correct as well.
But you know, he's the most it's the most important
position on the field, and if you're trying to you know,
spark things and start looking ahead. This was one of
the logical times to do it, having the extra practice
this week, the extra walkthrough with the buy. Otherwise you
could do it after the Thanksgiving game, I suppose, but
at two and eight, I think it made sense to

(03:44):
pull the trigger down.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Absolutely, John, Like you said, with the Bie week, you
get Tommy up to speed this week, you know you
didn't want to do it. You obviously couldn't do it
after this game Sunday, with the short week Dallas and
the Carolina game is the final nail. Let's face it, John,
I mean like, if if the Giants win that game
and we're not even having this conversation, Daniel would have
been a quarterback something. But the offense. Look, it's just

(04:08):
what's the biggest thing with Daniel in his career, in
his time, he is very inconsistent, not able to elevate,
you know what I mean. Against that Carolina team coming
out and not playing well, two red zone interceptions and
all that, there's no better time to do it than now.
The season is over. Everybody knows that. Now you start
looking ahead and John, look, we know this, bro, We're

(04:31):
around this team. It's not old Daniel. That's they're not
two and eight because of old because it's everything's Daniel.
Everybody has a hand in this. But he is the
quarterback and his job is to gets his team in
the end zone and win games and elevate his teammates.
And Daniel just didn't do that. It's just way too
much inconsistency. And now Davie's gonna move on.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Yeah. Look, and here's the thing Chris, like this is
it's always a rough day for an organization, right when
you put that type of investment in a player. I
did move on from him. If you know Dan, you
know what a good duty is, how hard he works
everyone around here, and if you know him like you
want him to succeed because he's just had a guy
that does everything the right way. And I know a
lot of fans are excited because you know, they've been

(05:13):
asking for this for a while, a certain group of
the fan base, right, But you know, designed to make
this change is the easy part, Right, The easiest thing
would have been for Daniel to continue to perform better,
improve and then that you know, you stick with the
contract and he's your guy. Now gets tough because it's
the easy part of the next phase. The tough part
is finding out who the next guy is going to
be and how you're going to acquire him. Because, as

(05:35):
you well know, the many organizations around football can attest
to this, finding a franchise quarterback is a very difficult
thing to do.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
John's the hottest thing to though. I mean, you see
it all over the league, and you know, just because
I say, just argument's sake, the Giants finished top three
and they get that quarterback, they feel like, you don't
know how that's going to work. You don't know how
that's going to work out. Look at all the misses
the last ten years in a draft with top draft quarterbacks.
I mean, it's a there's a ton of them.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
I mean, Chris, I mean, one of the most highly
rated guys coming out that I've ever seen in my
lifetime was Trevor Lawrence. I mean, and look how he's played.
Has he been? You know, they just gave him all
that money, but certainly it has not been what they
wanted it to be.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Oh, not even close. I mean, I mean you could
you can even use the word of regression when his game,
I mean, he's not even close. Everybody thought he was
the next to Andrew Luckett. All I remember that Germany
he came out and he's his game has regressed, no question,
from last year, for the second half of last year.
So this year he's not the same Trevor Lawrence. So
I mean this and and everybody's excited. Like he said,
you don't know how they're gonna evaluate and scout these

(06:37):
guys who they're gonna like. Then you know, you don't
know if they're gonna hit.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
On top of that, Chris, you don't even know if
they're gonna have the opportunity to pick the guy that
they inside they really like.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Yeah, I mean, you know, look at this year's draft
and you know the guys that were taken after Jade
Daniels and Drake may Well, Obviously Joe Shane and Brian
Dable didn't have those guys raided where they were taken
in it, you know, right, alf of those guys, I mean,
they hadn't panics available to the hitdles. But that's not
what Shane Davids, they didn't have him and the scouts
did not have them rated this so you don't know

(07:07):
how they're gonna scout these guys, how they're gonna rate them,
Who's gonna fluctuate, who's gonna go down. It's it's very
very difficult. Probably the toughest thing to do is in
the four major sports is to find that franchise quarterback.
So there's a lot of uncertainty, John, you know, and
with this organization moving forward, all.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
Right, let's let's that's the future. Now, let's take a
look at the rest of the season. Chris, what are
your what are you thinking in terms of the veto
what you want to see from the offense as this
season kind of moves forward here.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Yeah, I think Davill said the best today, John, He says,
you know we need we're getting him in there to
get a spark. You know, that's what you want to
see from Tommy. He gave it last year. He provided
that spark a lot last year. That's what you're looking for.
You gotta get some more touchdowns, gotta move the ball
and third down, Okay, make some good decisions and all
that turnos. Can't have turnos that Daniel had last week

(07:57):
against Carolina, two big turnos, Okay, So you lead that
splock in the offense. Tommy, without question at times, provided
that last season, and that's what they're gonna look for
this season moving forward, you know. So get that offense,
get a little spark going, move the ball, be better
in the red zone, which they had not been good
at all, and try to take it from there. We'll see.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
You're ready for a change. Pay Day comes early with citizens,

you mentioned now't talk about some of the like giants
at the buy stuff and we'll start on offense here.
We already talked about the quarterback. You mentioned it with
the red zone production, and I did some manual research

(08:58):
over the bye week, and as you will know, the
Giants have not won the turnover battle on any individual
game this year. Right, either have been even or they've
been minus in every game. I'm like, boy, ten games,
that's a lot. So I went back and I looked
it up. I went back to twenty thirteen. I could
not find a streak as long as ten games in
a single season. So I emailed one of our stats

(09:19):
services here, I say, guys, can you find this for me?
Has there ever been another time or when's the last
time the Giants went ten straight games without winning the
turnover battle? And they got back to me. And for
a single season, Chris, and this goes back to nineteen fifty.
It is the longest single season streak in the history
of the franchise, ten straight games without over battle.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
John, I was just gonna say, I think the number
is zero times, but I didn't want to jump on
it because I wasn't one hundred percent in that.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
But there are two other streaks that go from one
season to the next across seasons, but I don't like
to count those because it's two different teams. And that
was just ten, by the way, so that would still
be a tie. Here and here's the best part of it,
and this is the stat I gave on big kickoff
on Saturday, and then I get on Monday. So of
those streaks, I'll give you the top five or so.
In nineteen seventy six they had a nine game streak

(10:08):
like that, they went oh to nine. In nineteen seventy
three they had an eight game streak like that, zero
seven and one. Nineteen or two thousand and three they
did an eight game streak like that, oh to eight.
So those are the top three are the ones two
and five to six, two and five and seventy nine,
eighty three and twenty nineteen. So this is why I

(10:29):
say it's not just a quarterback because I'm looking at
five other streaks like or six other streaks like this,
and in every one of those streaks, the record's just
as bad, if not worse than this year. And those
are all different quarterbacks. So and this is not just
the offense given the ball away. And we'll get to
the defense too, but it's a combination with this particular number. Yeah,

(10:50):
if you're not winning that turnover battle, it makes it
really difficult to win games. And I'll give you one
more I'll give you one more stat. And I had
pulled this, uh from the same guys that do those stats,
and they sent this stat over today and I'll bring
it up here because I think it is telling. And
I asked them, hey, guys, can you just give me,
you know, NFL stats this year in terms of what

(11:11):
team's records are when they win turnover ratio and when
they don't. So this year, when teams are plus three
are better in games, they're sixteen and two, right, not surprising.
When they're plus two, they're thirty and nine. When they're
plus one, they're forty five and nineteen all right. When
they're even, they're exactly at five hundred, forty four and

(11:34):
forty four when they're minus one, they're nineteen and forty five.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
Minus two forty five.

Speaker 1 (11:40):
Yeah, minus two, nine and thirty and then minus three
plus two and sixteen. So do you want to know why?
I know it's a boring stat and nobody likes to
talk about it. If you keep losing the turnover ratio
or even if you're even your chances of winning are
not great in this league, especially when you're not one
of the more talented teams in the National Football League.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
John, Absolutely, And you know what, John, it's not boring stat.
I know people like I don't want to talk about. No,
it's key in this league. It's key. I mean what
we saw a couple of weeks on the Lions when
God had five interceptions and still won that game. I
have never seen anything like that before. I mean, look
at the stats for minus one, John, I know.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
Yeah, I could not believe the minus one and the
plus one were as stark as they were. That took
me completely by surprise. And just so people understand what
what the winning percentage is and that and I think
they gave that to me. When you're plus one seventy
percent winning percentage seventy percent seven Moncos.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
John, I was shocked that when you gave me at
plus three that there was actually two losses in that.
I guess one of rules was that Lion game.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
Yeah, one the was the Lions.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
Was the Lion game. I figured that a couple of
weeks ago. Yeah, I mean, but but that, Yeah, I
mean no, like John, like we just said, it's not
old Daniel. I know people want to destroy me for that,
and they say, come on, Chris the quarterback, it's everybody
this defense at John. You look at the defense this year,
which has been good at times and that so much
other times. The one interception on opening game against Minnesota

(13:01):
is a deflection that muis now had and they haven't
had one since. And John correct me if I'm wrong.
I was thinking about this the other day that they
haven't even have been close. Usually you get some guys
right right, right, John. Usually you'll get somebody on a
cover tun to.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
Come over, drop Chris. They haven't dropped Eddie. They haven't
dropped Eddie like, they haven't had any chances, And you're
in look some of this. You can be critical of
the players and the coaches whatever, that's fine. You know,
you see in games every week some quarterback just air
mail as a pass five feet above receiver's head and
it goes right to a safety. Like they haven't even
had luck to get one of those.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
John, we sort of yesterday and I don't know, I
feel so to Chicago again. But Jordan Love airmailed the
ball and yep, and the kids Smith come down to
pick at the goal line. And how many times, John,
did we see when Zay was over here, McKinney was here,
how many times you come over and almost and had
the ball in his hands and dropping. But the point
I'm making is they haven't even come close to the interceptions,
which is John, It's mind boggling to me that usually

(13:59):
when you have only a few picks, guys, you could
look back and say, oh, man, if this guy just
came down with those two balls, if the safety rolling
over the top just came down with that ball. And John,
unless I'm mistaken, I don't even call one ball a
defensive back had in his hands you or me, and
you could have set it a Monday morning. Hey, Chris Man,
that bull's gotta be caught. A giant Look at that bull.

(14:20):
It's gotta be caught.

Speaker 1 (14:21):
Not one I don't remember either it's mind.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
Boggling to me, John, that hasn't happened. It really is.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
No, it is. And look, and that's that's one stat
that's huge. And this is the one that Joe Shane
talked about as a presser last week. That's the other one.
And that's the red zone stuff, Chris. I mean, look,
I went through this, I looked at I did this
last week. It's good use of my time. I went
through every red zone drive in each game and I
tried to see, like what happened on each drive. So
they have seven red zone drives that have ended in

(14:50):
turnovers where you get zero points, four interceptions, even forced fumble,
and one turnover on downs in Week one against the Vikings,
that's seven. You had three touchdowns get called back by penalty.
That's three. That's ten potential touchdowns that you'll lose. Just
right there. They have four sacks in the red zone,

(15:10):
which given how many sacks they're going up overall, that's
actually a fairly big number. Yes, And when they're inside
the thirty yard line they have just a whereas the
scoring rate here I had it somewhere, they only have
a here's a good one in the red zone, Chris,
they only score and this is fieldal or touchdown. We
know that their touchdown rates at forty percent, and that's bad,

(15:33):
but just scoring outright, they have a seventy one percent
scoring rate inside the red zone, which means on thirty
percent of their red zone drives, they come ay way
with zero points, the worst offense in the league in
terms of scoring. That's how, that's how walk away with
zero points and informus field was by the way, too

(15:54):
is in there.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Well, hence why you're thirty second in the league in
red zone offense right there, and you can't win, John,
you better have a top three defense, top five to
win games with those stats. And the Giants, as we know,
do not have that type of defense. They're just not
good enough roster wise to overcome mistakes like that mistake,
if the mistake, if the mistake, that's stat you just

(16:16):
gave me. John, his mind boggling seven times turno of
us in the red zone seven times seventy rate of
scoring period, I mean thirty percent you don't score. I mean,
that's what it, John, That's why teams go too to eight.
There you go, there you go, And.

Speaker 1 (16:35):
What's the answer there Chris, But I did think about this,
and I didn't find any real trends. The only thing
I could I could see and think maybe they could
do a little bit more is of leaning into the
run a little bit more, especially how good they've been
with Tracy since and fans want to blame not having
Saquon for this record. By the way, Chris, the Giants
are like the fifth best running team in the league
since the dress became the starter. Like, the running game

(16:56):
is not the problem here, folks, it's not. So maybe
lean into the run game a little bit more and
just pounded get down hill a little bit. That's the
only really kind of solution that I have. Just play
cleaner football, which I know is easier said.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
Than done, John, Yeah, and you're right, that's easier said
and done. There's a few things, John, I feel maybe
could improve that, and one of them is definitely like
I feel Dabel has gotten away from the run at
times in the red like you said, and I feel
a tight end should have been way more involved in
the red zone possessions, and that includes Bellinger. I mean,

(17:31):
for weeks I was saying, can you imagine if you
had Daniel on the feel Bellinger and THEO or just
and you just did a boot or play action, send
Beunger out and have flat. I mean that would shock
teams because they haven't seen it on tape. So to me,
you know, it's everybody once again, it's Daniel, but you
can't look Gable two. At times it's like, okay, why

(17:53):
are we doing this? We have a big tight end right, well,
why isn't he more involved than a red? And you
just you don't see it and it's really hurt them,
you know. And like you said, John, let's not look
at it and go, oh, you know what, Chris, there's
no Barkley's that's why. No, you Goti Sike. You know

(18:13):
you got guys at Tyroln Tracy who's running the ball? Well, okay,
you got that, you could run the ball, okay. So
it's a combination of a lot. I would like. I
was kind of hoping to see a little more tight
ends in the red John, we really haven't seen that,
you know, And like you said, I feel Dable at
times has gotten away from that run, you know, and

(18:36):
I think it's hurt them, man, you know, instead of
leaning on that run a little bit more, they really haven't.

Speaker 1 (18:41):
And then the last thing I'll bring up on offense,
because before we jump over the defense, it's they're still
exupposed to place. They've actually done a pretty good job
in the run game. They're tied for the ninth most
rushes of twenty plus yards. Tracy's been great, that's not
an issue. But if you look at completions, they're still
running twenty eighth in completions of twenty or more yards.
They've only had nineteen through tens. That's less than two
per game. And if you're not gonna be good in

(19:03):
the red zone, you better make big explosive plays for touchdowns.
And they're not doing that either, right, Yeah, so maybe
that's something. And you know Tommy doesn't have you know,
Daniel's probably got a better arm than he does in
terms of just actual physical arm strength. But if Tommy
can be a little bit better on some of those
deep balls and be a little bit more accurate and
hit them when they're there, I think that's the other
thing that can besides obviously the red zone stuff really

(19:24):
boots some of the scoring, is getting some of the
more of those explosive pass.

Speaker 2 (19:27):
Plays absolutely, John, because you can't just fly on ten
twelve play drives, dude, you have you need those.

Speaker 1 (19:33):
By the way, another stat to back you up. They
lead the league in length of scoring drives. No one
has an average scoring drive longer than what the Giants
do to.

Speaker 2 (19:42):
Your Yeah, and it's tough to win like that, John,
You need the big splash plays. There's twenty plus plays
and it just didn't come from Daniel. You know, it
didn't come from Daniel this season. And it's tough to
be team twelve play ten play drives and score touchdowns.
It's not easy in this league. Man, You're not gonna
win many games. You need those big plays, and the
Giants just happened even with elite, right. You just haven't

(20:05):
seen it this season. And Daniel has been inconsistent on
his attempts, you know, on the times he's gone down
the field. He's just been very inconsistent. And it's it's
it's mind bowling at times. John, I gotta be honest
with you, because you got guys with speed out there,
and you had a much better offense. You have a
much better offensive line this season and passed pro and
it's still hasn't been there.

Speaker 1 (20:27):
Yeah, So let's talk about the two positives and offensives
before we go to the defense, and you are at first.

Speaker 2 (20:31):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (20:32):
Though, I'm not gonna say the offensive line is a
top ten union and that's fixed. But the offensive line
has been better this year, and you have to be
happy with how Carmen Brisillo has kind of put this
unit together. And I thought it was a good start
for Evan Neil last week on his way back, really
good in the run game, and he flashed him good
stuff in pass pro two.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
Yeah, I mean it kind of makes you won though,
like why Evan wasn't in it a little bit earlier
because he played well. He played well last week, you know,
and when Andrew went down and they went to Josh
thing and then they went to Harbin and all that,
and then they finally moved a LUMINOI over and put
Neil And I tell you, man, you know we're all wondering, right, John,
what's Evan gonna look like?

Speaker 1 (21:10):
Right?

Speaker 2 (21:11):
And he played well. I mean, you got to give
credit when credit is due. The kid played well last week,
you know, and before Andrew went down, this was a
good pass pro offensive lines, a pass pro line that
we haven't seen in years. Don't forget This is a
team last year that allowed eighty five sacks. Now, of
course I know it's not all the offensive line, but

(21:33):
the number was still eighty five and that is ludicrous.
So that was a much better line. I think Priscilla
has done a good job in a lot of ways
this year. And you have to like what Calm has
done with Neil. Now we'll find out more Sunday. You
know Tampa Evan's progress. But man, I tell you what,
a guy who wasn't playing in a while. I thought
he played really well last week. So and then you know,
Ilumino of a left tackle of Evan kid plays like

(21:55):
he did last week. And you know what, John, I
heard so many people tell me last week, Oh christ
come on, they played Carolina. They had ten sacks going
in twelve.

Speaker 1 (22:04):
Hey, you know what, John, you gotta start playing bro.

Speaker 2 (22:07):
He played no but he played most of his STAPs
agains Jadeveon Clowney in passbro And Jadevion Clowney is not
Jadavion Clowney of South Carolina. I understand that, and back
in Houston days, but he's still a pretty good edge guy. Okay,
And I don't Evan did a heck of a job
on him.

Speaker 1 (22:22):
Yeah, I agree, and I thought the run game blocking
better than the past game blocking. But again, first starting
a long time, I think you like starting now. You
hope there's an elevation and improvement from here. Other thing
on offense, Chris, you gotta be happy with the job Tyrone,
Tracy and the league neighbors have done early this year.
Those seem like draft picks that are gonna work out.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
Oh, absolutely, no question. I mean, you look at Tyrone,
Johnny City yourself. Hey, we got out back for twenty
twenty five. We have our back, you know with Devin up.
But Tyrone's out back, no question. I mean three one
hundred Ydard Gas who expected that? Nobody saw it? His comment,
You know, the kid is a solid pack man. His
vision is incredible for a guy who was receiving his
whole college career except for his last year. His vision

(22:59):
is believable. And he's he brings it too, man, you know,
he he he runs hard man, he'll bring it. He will,
he will he brings a punch to you. So he's
been a very pleasant surprise. Mylik name is obviously we
saw this Johnson day one of camp. How dynamic this
kid is does he have to tighten up some stuff? Yes,
no question. Look I always say it like it is,

(23:21):
and I love Malik and I've been raving about him
since Last Otash last year. Last brings OTA's But Malik
also has to tighten up some stuff as far as
maybe some route running. And obviously we know we had
a few big drops this season in key spots. But
are we really worried about Milik as this kid? No?
I mean, this kid's a true number one. He's gonna
be a true number one. He's a number one. He's

(23:41):
a dynamic talent and all that. So you know, the
Giants have a number one heading the next year. They
have their running back heading to next year. And that's
always a plus because we haven't been able to say
we've had our number number one receiver, a true number
one for a while. Man.

Speaker 1 (23:56):
So now I'm with you.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
You turf, You're good at it.

Speaker 3 (24:02):
So you start a turf Fizz business grows, your savings grow,
become the most celebrated name in turf. Are you ready
for all that life brings?

Speaker 1 (24:14):
Johnson a podcast brought to you by Citizens, the official
bank of the Giants. Citizens will donate seven hundred and
fifty dollars to the Giants Foundation for each scoring drive
during the twenty twenty four season. Learn more at citizens
bank dot com slash Giants. All right, Chris, defensive side
of the ball. Let's start with the areas for improvement first.
And the run defense still not there, man, I mean,

(24:35):
I think that was a big focus for Brian Dabele
and bringing in Shane Bowen and Chamberlain has a great
history in Tennessee of stopping the run, but they just
have not been able to get the job done. What
have you seen there?

Speaker 2 (24:46):
What I've seen is a few things. And you heard
this mention that a million times this season gap fits,
And I remember talking. I've talked to Michael fad a
few times in a lock room the ship. Micah talk
to me about these gap fits and all that, and
he'd just be like, listen, Chris, if one guy breaks down,
it's a trickle effect. And that's happened too many times

(25:10):
this year, John, And you look at some other thing.
I put some stuff on the X account. Cornerbacks got
cornerbacks not helping, gap discipline and just plain old simple football, John,
of guys not getting off blocks, Guys just look, John,
this game will always be the same as far as

(25:31):
you have to beat the man in front of it.

Speaker 1 (25:33):
You got to block it a tackle man.

Speaker 2 (25:34):
You gotta block, block and tackle John. How many times
runner backs in a second level? Then you see mistackles
and now it's a huge chunk play. It's a combination
of everything. And they haven't They just haven't gotten a
job done. And you know, we remember that quote from Dable.
Hey hey Shane and easy overhere to stop this run?
Can you stop this run? For yeah? Yeah, yeah, all
that stuff. They haven't stopped the run at all. And

(25:54):
it's been worse and worse each week. And it's all
kinds of different reasons for it. Guys in wrong fits,
not getting off blocks. It could be little things like
last week I put on something you know with Tay
Banks is coming on a sea gap run with the
tuba Hubbard and he's taken an inside leverage where he
has to be outside. Bring funnel him into Bobby Okurrique.

(26:17):
Little things like that. All it takes is that one
little thing and now you go from a three yard
game to a twenty yard game.

Speaker 1 (26:26):
And that's the thing, Like down to down, Chris, that
hasn't been awful, but they're just too of those chunk
plays that just get killing them.

Speaker 2 (26:31):
Absolutely, yeah, yeah, breakdown and coverage at certain time. Look,
I'm not gonna sit you say, oh, its defense has
been horribly and it has it, but it's been those
one two three plays during the course of a game
that has killed him. Now, last week was just a
bad one because Trouba Hubbard just he hurt them from
from the first series on they couldn't stop him. But

(26:52):
other games doing the course of the season, it like
two or three breakdowns that's killed him. You know, that's
killed this team and give up huge you know. So look,
the run game is just John. This team looking forward,
they need some help next to the decks big time.
They're gonna need a defensive line in big time next
to decks. They're gonna need a few things, you know.

(27:14):
But tackling has to get better. We've seen way too
many mistackles in big spots. And look, John, we're talking
about the defense in the cornerback position. That we felt
going into the season that we only have to worry
about one side of the field, Well this season we've
had to worry about both sides of the field because
Tay Banks just hasn't had the second season that we expected.

Speaker 1 (27:37):
Yeah, what's your take on Tay because it's I go
back to the Philadelphia game where he had to play
where obviously he didn't go all out to try to,
you know, tackle jal when hurts on that scramble. Then
you look at other snaps and he's not letting aj
Brown get five yards off the line of scrimmage and
he's beating the hell out on one of the best
wide receivers in football at the line. It isn't an

(27:57):
every down thing for him either, No, they were just
there's a few downs in every game where he's just
not locked in enough, doesn't execute well enough, and bet
and when you're having a bad year. There are sometimes
when you're having a good year and every time you
make a mistake, it doesn't burn your team. You know,
the quarterback doesn't look your way, they don't run in
your direction, whatever the situation might be. But this is
the deal with Tay Banks. Where and whenever he does

(28:19):
make one of those mistakes, what's going right at him
and the other team. The quarterback doesn't overthrow the pass right, No, No,
he's on the money every time and or or the
running back makes the right cut, someone else doesn't get
off a block, whatever the case might be, it seems
every one of those mistakes have been amplified.

Speaker 2 (28:35):
Yeah, it's one of those. Yes. But the one thing, John,
you can never have an excuse for, and that's effort. Sure,
And we know what's happened with Tay a few times
this year. I'm not going to destroy this kid. I
know a lot of people want to destroy I'm not
like you said, John. He's also played a lot of
good football, but unfortunately for him, it's been some bad
football too. And what happens is we all know what's

(28:57):
happened with the fit situation. There's been some play that
Jerome Henison called him out. We all saw Jerome yelling
on him on the side of the jail and hurts play.
And there's no excuse for that, John. So he has
to tighten it up. He has to real has to
realize and I'm around Tate, John, You're around Taya more
than me. He's a good kid. He's not a bit
He's a good kid, Tay. But he has to realize that, Hey,

(29:18):
I'm in the NFL. I got to tighten some stuff
up here because I'm won't be in this league long.
And I had a guy in the locker room. We
were talking about some things, you know, your younger guys
and and the guy have you know, a veteran guy
looked at me and says, well, you know what NFL
stands for if you don't start getting your stuff together.
Tay's physical Look, I think the system to John doesn't

(29:40):
fit what he does best. I think he was better
in the wing system. Now, that's not excuse. Everybody you
played through the system you are presented.

Speaker 1 (29:49):
And by the way, most systems in the NFL are
zone systems. Now people are only playing man twenty twenty
five percent of the time. Yeah, you better be good
at zone.

Speaker 2 (29:56):
Yes, And look, we all know Bowen is a sixty
two per zone guy. Whatever it is something like that.
He plays a lot of quarters, plays a lot of
And I think Tay was a better fit for the
last system. And man like you saw physically was at
aj in that game. But that's not an excuse. You
have to excel and adapt to the system your defensive

(30:19):
coordinator presents. And he struggled at times this season, no
question about it. But John the bottom line is never
an excuse for effort. And I've seen two or three
plays from Tay Banks this year. We all have it's
this is not newsbreaking. We all know what's going on.
We all know what's happened in the past where he
can't have that, John. He has to realize that, hey,
no matter what, I don't care if I get beat

(30:40):
whatever it is, you gotta bust it, man. And hopefully
he's look, he's a young kid, second in the league,
and hopefully he realizes that because if that continues, he's
just not gonna be around here. He's not gonna get
a second, He's not gonna be around here much longer,
because that is not acceptable. John is some of the
things he's done. Sorry, John almost say ahead shame because

(31:01):
it kind of overshadows some of the good football he's had.
Like even that Eagle game. John, nobody talked about how
he played Aj that game. AJ Brown. I'm sorry how
he played AJ Brown that game? Right, because of what
happened with the Jalen Hurts play, So everybody wanted to
talk about that, and nobody was really talking about how
physical he was AJ Brown and AJ didn't do much
that game, but that's what happened with it plays.

Speaker 1 (31:23):
No, I'm with you one hundred percent. Two positives on
defense I want to touch on. One is the pass rush.
I mean, if you would have told me before the
year that the Giants would be six in the NFL
and pressure rate, first in sack rate, first in number
of sacks, I would have sat here and been like,
all right, I mean, the defense has got to be
pretty damn good, right, h But their pass rush has

(31:45):
been very strong, they just have not put themselves in
the position where they're making teams throw where that pass
rush can impact winning or losing.

Speaker 2 (31:54):
And that's what makes the turnovers that even more mind
boggling between us, because when you were up there with
right and pressure rate and mind you, Lily, they only
blitzed like twenty six percent of time or something. She
doesn't blitz much. So it's been a fun for and
you have that much pressure and you still get in inceptions.
That's what's that mind boggling to me too, man, I mean,

(32:15):
you don't see that very often, but John, Yeah, to
get back what you were saying, a lot of set
look dex has been unbelievable. We all know that, right,
And Brian Burns too. Brian Burns has had a you know,
TIBs has been out as he has got the six sacks,
He's played well in his snaps since Tims has been out,
get it to the quarterback. So yeah, that is a positive,
no question about it. Brian Burns has been hurt for

(32:40):
a while and he's still out there, man, playing every
step and he's had he's had an impact up front
two with the hits of pressures and he I think
he has six sacks now and so that's been a plus. John,
It's just amazing. I haven't got more eternal with the
pressure rate they've had now, I'm with you.

Speaker 1 (32:56):
Other positive I think has to be the play of
the young defensive backs. I know Tyler Neuban hasn't made
as many plays in the ball as you might like,
but he does a great job of the line of
scrimmage with his tackling. And Drew Phillips same deal around
his physicality. You know, the screen game, The way he
plays that wide receiver screen game is really good. He
sets the edge pretty well, not afraid to go in
there and tackle. You have to like the early signs

(33:18):
from those two young guys. The Giants second and third
round picks this year.

Speaker 2 (33:21):
Yeah, John, you know what? And then why the Right Way?
They're why the way Joe Shan wants him, you know,
these kids of a bright spot. Look, I think Drew's
like second and TFLs to a second or third and
the team and tackles loss. He's doing that. He's a
very physical slot kid. You know, he's a huge plus
this season. And Tyler Neuban Loo kid's gonna come. It

(33:42):
might not be his shit, John, but Tyler was a
bullhawk in Minnesota. He was a bullhawk in college. It'll come.
It might not be this year, everybody, but it's gonna
come down the road with him too. And he's physical
up in that box. And we've seen him a few times.
She had take on Gods and just blowed him up
and just blowed him up and blitzes. Real physical. Because
so that's a big plus. I think they have two

(34:02):
studs there and they're Why the Right Way exactly what
Dable and Shane want in a football player. And that's
big because they'd the future of the team, right John,
I mean, look, and even Sane talked about it. Joe
talked about it. You know when he was asking about
the McKinney and you know him leaving in free agency,
and Joe was the first thing out of Joe's mouth was, Hey,
you know, we're pretty happy with Tyler Nubn. This kids

(34:24):
played the most snaps on any rookies. He's up there
with the tackles and all that stuff. You know, it's
it's it's a sucky part of the business. You gotta
let some good players walk up the walk out the
door time, you know, with the free agency stuff. But
they're pretty happy with Tyler Nuban too. Man.

Speaker 1 (34:38):
All right, two two more questions to say goodbye. First,
one more big picture things, Chris, because I was thinking
about this over the weekend. You're sitting here watching games
on Sunday. You think of other teams that are built
to be successful, and you go, oh, well, you know,
where are the Giants. When you look at this right
and I think it about it, I'm like, all right,
what's the one of the toughest things to do getting
the lead edge rusher. Well, the Giants have one that's
twenty six years old. The Giants having a lead defensive tackle,

(34:59):
and those tackle very difficult to find. That's what was
Dexter twenty seven, something like that. Yeah, young player, right,
all right, they have a franchise left tackle that's in
his prime. All right, check the box there. You have
a guy who think is going to be a number
one wide receiver or another premium position where you've got
to spend money, your draft capital, final player at that spot.
Check with Malik Neighbors. You feel like you have your
starting running back on a rookie contract in a rookie

(35:21):
year in Tyrone Tracy. You feel good about his safety
in Tyler Nuban. But in terms of those premium spots,
which I know has been a big focus of Joe
Shane since he's gotten here, they have actually checked the
boxes on a lot of those premium spots where they
have players that you think are either already really good
do you think are going to fill those roles and
be really big you know, good players at those positions.

(35:43):
Now you still a spotlight corner where you're still trying
to figure that out. But there are pieces that the
most critical spots that are good that I think you
have something here that's a little bit better looking long
term than the record might indicate.

Speaker 2 (36:00):
Absolutely, and Joe is signing those premium spots. He's signed
Andrew Thomas to the extension. He brought Brian Burns over here,
so and he drafts Malik Navis. So, like you said that,
some of these premium spots they're looking good in, not
as the other stuff. But of course the main thing
is wat John, they gotta get this quarterback situation, right,
That's what they're gonna have to hit on. They're gonna
have to get that, and then you could take him

(36:23):
from mail. Look, Joe, Joe talked about an oppressor, right,
he goes, I don't feel it, but far off. You know,
I don't feel with it. Far off. You could argue
at whatever, but that's what Joe meant. That's what you know.
What Joe means by that is that, hey, we got
premium spots. We got elite guys at the premium positions.

Speaker 1 (36:39):
And I think he meant far off from being a
competitive team, not from being a super Bowl winner.

Speaker 2 (36:44):
You know, No, no, no, if anybody do it, Joe's
talking about super Bowl contended, then it just that's their
own agenda. No, that's not what Joe meant. He just
meant from being a good football team because they have
guys in the premium positions locked up, you know. But
obviously the big one John, as we all know, is
you could have these guys all locked up all you want.
If you don't have that signal calla, if you don't

(37:05):
have that leader behind Senna, uh that could you know,
take the game to another level, then you're gonna you're
gonna have a hard time. And that's something obviously, you know,
that's gonna be the goalless offseason, no question about it.
They've got to get that quarterback, either a veteran or
vida draft one or the other. But somebody different is
gonna be in him next year.

Speaker 1 (37:25):
All right, final thing, they do play football game in
five days, Chris, believe it or not. The Buccaneers cobbing
it down and the Bucks you know, you look at
the Bucks are similar to the Giants, just not to
the extent. You got a lot of the Bucks and
Bucks metrics like there. Their records should be a lot
better than it is. They've lost a ton of close

(37:46):
games this year too. Now they have a lot of
injuries and wide receiver. I don't know the status of
Mike Evans. I have not heard anything yet. If he
has a chance to be back yet this week. Obviously,
Chris Godwin's out for the year, Baker's played well. They
have two good running backs, uh Tris and Worse I
believe is out right for for a decent amount of time.
He's not gonna play in this game. Yeah, they blitzed
a lot on defense. That'll be something Tommy Devido is

(38:07):
gonna have to deal with. Oh boy, you know, this
is a game where the Bucks have kind of figured
out ways to lose games this year and in a lot
of similar ways that the Giants have.

Speaker 2 (38:17):
Yeah, but I tell you what, John, these guys, man,
their last two losses, that gut Atlanta game, in that
and that forty nine game, these guys are fighting, man,
and they're short handed.

Speaker 1 (38:27):
Oh yeah, they're playing close.

Speaker 2 (38:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (38:28):
That them saying like they're not getting blown out, like
they're oh no, close games, man.

Speaker 2 (38:32):
Absolutely, these guys, you know, they they they're running out
of old friend out there stealing Shepherd that's who's in
a receiving group. You know, it's amazing they've been you know,
they've been devastated with injuries on the receiving side, and
Baker's fighting, man. You know, they losing some close games.
You know, and all that stuff, So this would be
a tough one. But you know this, this one's Sunday.
You know, Todd Bowles is gonna be oh what, who's starting? Okay,

(38:56):
you know he's gonna be sending out. Todd's very aggressive
and they're gonna be up to you know, Watsonday and
Tommy defil So that's gonna be a huge one of
the game. And you know what, you know what, John,
I'm happy for Shep. You know we all love Sheep, right, man,
I'm happy for him. He's getting some snaps now because
of the injuries and and all that stuff, so be
good to see him Sunday. I expect it to be

(39:16):
a tough game Sonday, you know, but it's gonna come
down to balls and it blits him how Tommy handles
it and all that, but yeah, it'll be It'll be
a good one to Tampa. Bay feels is still hanging
now with a line of losing Tune World Tampa, but
it feels it's still right there. So it's gonna be
a huge game for them. Baker Mayfield, Hey, John, Baker's
playing well, man, I know he's playing well. That guy's
a different quarterback. The last few years. I give him credit.

(39:39):
I think we all saw to play last week when
Bose is hanging on his arm and he still makes
a play. Baker is a game. I give him credit, man.
So it'll be a tough one Sunday, and we'll see
what Tommy DeVito does and if he could provide that spark.

Speaker 1 (39:55):
So we'll see, we will see. Chris. Tell the folks
where they can find all your work, my friend.

Speaker 2 (40:00):
At Giant Insider, right x and uh the podcast is
at Giant Insider Newspaper and Podcasts. And thanks again John
for having beyond. But it's good talking to you.

Speaker 1 (40:12):
Always good talking ball with you, Chris really appreciate. And
we'll see you here on Wednesday.

Speaker 2 (40:17):
Yes, sir, see you Wednesday. That should be interesting to
lock it on Wednesday too. I have a film that
I have a Film's gonna be few people in on
Tommy's locker Wednesday after just.

Speaker 1 (40:25):
A couple I think probably hopefully they'll clear out some
space for us to all squeeze in.

Speaker 2 (40:30):
As you know, as a fellow with Tellian, I like
talking to Tommy.

Speaker 1 (40:33):
You know, absolutely, Chris, good stuff man, See on Wednesday,
my friend.

Speaker 2 (40:37):
