(01:27):
to look back on what was the first preseason game
for the Pittsburgh Steels at thirty one to twenty five
win late on Saturday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars. And look,
we know the main thing from the NFL preseason is
to get out on that field, stay fit, stay healthy,
and get off that field the game. But it's always
nice to win a game as well, and great to
see guys come in in terms of you know, the
(01:49):
rookies come in, get to see a first look at
them as well, and we get Scatter Thompson who was
playing there as well. His alma mater actually plays in
Dublin next week and Mason Rudolphus will good to see
those guys get on And I'll tell you what what
I really enjoyed from that was actually here and what
pot firm we've had to say with Dublin.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
One of the highlights of this season is going to
be the team traveling to Ireland for a week four.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
You got to go this offseason though, take you.
Speaker 5 (02:13):
Through what that experience was like and what we can
expect we finally get to go there.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
The people that are unbelievable and it's exciting to you know,
play over in Ireland and it's gonna be a great time.
You know, they're passionate about American football. They've already had
signs everywhere. And I'm excited, and I think the whole
team is exad as well.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
I tell you what, if he's excited, I'm excited. We're
all excited. Can you believe we are literally under seven
weeks away from this game in Dublin. It is scary
to think. Some really cool news has dropped over the
last few days with a couple of big things in
this podcast. We've got an interview with Gilan Warren come
up in a few moments. But just let people know
that you can watch the entire preseason for the Pittsburgh
(02:55):
Staters along with weekly showings of The Mike Tomlin Show
on Vergin Media this season, along with audio commentary throughout
the season on Off the Ball. You tell me an
other team that can do that. That is unbelievable for
Irish fans. Obviously, wherever you are north or south, you
can get that off the ball up on your phone
as well, So do check it out, folks, and really
(03:15):
interesting game in terms of you if you have watched
it back from the weekend. It was just good to
see guys sort of get reps and actually see what
they could do in the sense of you know, yes,
it's unlikely we're gonna see Scanner Thompson for example, BQB
one and obviously you know missing as there as well,
but this still gives an idea for US guys to
(03:36):
see just how much depth this team has. And I
think that's key in terms of watching coach Tomlin said
after the game, and you can now hear that on
the Irish Hitters podcast.
Speaker 6 (03:47):
You know, it's really good Evening's work.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
We got put in a lot of situations and got
a chance to watch people performing them two minute drive
before the half kind of highlighting some of that. I
thought we did a nice job of not beating our
own butt. We kept pre snap penalties virtually to a minimum.
I think we had one. We played a pretty clean
(04:09):
game for a first time out We gave a lot
of people a lot of opportunities, and that's what this
is about. It was good to see some offensive players
tackling on special teams, defensive players blocking on special teams.
We'll comb through that really closely. In the top of
it all, off man, we kind of got through the
game virtually injury free. I think Cam McCutcheon got taken
(04:33):
out with a soft tissue injury maybe at hamstring that
needs to be evaluated, But other than that, we're pretty
clean and so productive night on a lot of fronts,
and obviously we'll comb through the tape, man, and learn
from it in a lot of ways, both players and coaches,
and hopefully be better the next time out.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Good to hear from coach Tomlin officer the preseason win
against the Jacksonville Joguars On this week for the very
special guest Via Steeters, running back Jill and Warren joined.
I'll say I had the chance to sit down with
him at Saint Vincent College just before the first game.
Lovely guy. I hope you enjoyed listening. I hope you
enjoy listening to it on the Irish Taters podcast. But
(05:12):
I'll tell you wats I have some great players to
chap to your at Saint Vincent College. This guy's no exception.
Jaalen Ward, Jailen, it's great to have you on Haida.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
It's good. I'm doing good.
Speaker 6 (05:22):
I'm good.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
I'm even better. I've been better for I've been buzzing,
sorry for the last sixty eight and months. No one
that you guys are coming out in Ireland.
Speaker 6 (05:30):
Are you excited about that?
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Is?
Speaker 6 (05:32):
Is it the first time in a national for you?
What's that like?
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Yeah, this will be my first time out the country. Okay,
I'm excited. I tell my family, because my family that
they're really excited too. But I don't look at it
is like vacation. You know, we're there'll win a game,
so that's kind of how I look at it, or
no matter where we play. So I'm excited to get
that experience and you know, share you know, that football
experience with you know, outside of the country. But at
(05:56):
the end of the day, they'll win a game.
Speaker 6 (05:58):
Get the Dublin Dublin hopefully we'll say come back. We
will come back to that in a bit.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
What's it feeling like in the locker room Because I
spoke to Alex Highsmith about it. Are the guys excited
Is something that you guys talk about or is it
very much for you as much as it's a big
thing for all of us. You guys just just look
at the schedule and it doesn't matter where the game is,
you're just ready to rock and roll.
Speaker 4 (06:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Well, you know, it's a you know, it's our job,
you know, and we you know, we want to win
where it don't matter where it's at. Oh yeah, obviously
we're excited to go to Ireland. A lot of us
haven't been out the country. It'll be the first for
a lot of us. So yeah, we're excited, okay.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
And in terms of the game itself, it's look, I
give you a prime example they're on this year the
Jags play the Rams in London and that's fantastic, and
to get any games internationally it's big. But for the
for the Rooney family and the connection, the significance that
they have to the island of Ireland, that's a really
big deal. Is that Is that something that you guys
conceive and being part of the organization and on that
(06:54):
Rooney family and what it really means to them, because
it is going to be very very special in that sense.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
You know, obviously they do a lot for us, They
take care of us very well, and so it'd be
nice to you know, share that experience with others.
Speaker 6 (07:06):
Running back rooms looking a little bit different this year.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
First off, you know, I'm presuming as friends, you'll obviously
miss playing Monaji. You've got a couple of good guys
in there now as well. How is the Dynamics Forming
and Training camp in terms of getting that new room
adjusted in that sense?
Speaker 3 (07:20):
You know, I really love this room because you know,
everybody's you know, bought into the process and the culture
that we have here, and you know they come in
with great attitude. There's nobody that's a very selfless room.
And I think when times get hard, you know you
can lean on you know, your brothers and you know,
get the job done whatever it is.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
And I've been here for a couple of ours. On
this Sunday morning, I can see already high specialist place.
Is what's it like coming out here walking down the steps,
seeing all the funds Because for a lot of those
like for a lot of those kids, that is their
opportunity to see you guys up close and try and
amate you in the future. What's it like being here
because it just seems special already and there's no funds here.
Speaker 6 (08:02):
Yeah, it's cool.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
You know, I enjoy it, you know as a player,
because you know, I never got that when I was younger.
I mean as a kid, you dream about, you know,
seeing NFL players like up close, and uh, you know,
I try to make it special for those that I
do come across. So yeah, it's it's special every day.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
You can use the word special when you say we're
thirteen thousand fans and Friday Night what was that like?
So Friday Night Lights, I believe in the trope that
looked awesome.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
Oh yeah, it looked amazing. I think that was the
most pact that I've seen it since I've been here.
You know, I tell the guys, it's a lot more
people than there was at my state championship game in
high school. Like our high school games they never looked
like this, So yeah, it was it was nice to see.
Speaker 6 (08:46):
That's awesome.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
Look talk about running back room and people know now
you've been living under a rock. There's been real bold moves,
big improvements made on this team this season. What's it
like having Roland and how have you found them so
far in terms of both on the field but also
outside of that as well.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
Yeah, he's a you know, leader on and off the field.
He's always giving us point as the younger guys, Like,
he's been in the game a long time, so he
knows a lot of the rights and a lot of
the wrongs. So he'll share that knowledge and uh, you know,
it helps, It's contagious, it helps a lot.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
And DK is a massive statement in terms of this
offense and in terms of getting to that next level.
And for people listening fives away in Ireland, we've seen
how FASTI is, but have you found him the last
couple of weeks on the on the field.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Yeah, he's a freak of nature. We like to call
the people like that aliens because you don't come across
those a lot. And uh yeah, he's just yeah, he's
what you see in real life. He's bigger and or
on the media and he's a lot bigger in real life.
So yeah, I'm glad he's on our side.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
You've had a metal players so far with your time
with the organization. What was your like if you had
the name a favorite one, what would it be so far?
Speaker 3 (09:54):
I mean, I guess really anything Uh inside the tackles,
I like to you know, the screens too.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
You didn't get a result you wanted that game, but
the play you had against Cleveland in the snow where
you you know, really pushed it in to get a touchdown,
it was definitely up. There wasn't like playing in the
snow good.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Uh, It's just it enhances like obviously ball security.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
That must be really hard when it's snowing like that
must be very real.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
There's there's there's like gloves to kind of help with
the condition weather conditions. But yeah, it's it's just you
gotta be more cautious of what can go wrong.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
We were outside there and eye before we met, and
I had the chance from a distance to see coach
Tomlin do an interview with my friend Neil Reynolds and
the or that man gives off. It's just he seems
like such a great guy. What's it like working with
coach Tomlin but also coach Faulkner as well in terms
of the running backs.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
You with both those guys, you learned something new every day.
Uh Uh, it's a it's a privilege to be coached
by those two dudes and I'm very grateful that I
fell into a place where I'm able to get.
Speaker 6 (10:58):
Coached by both of them.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
What's not like in terms of motivation coming into the
league and drafted, you know, did you feel did you
feel like I need to prove myself or did you
feel like month these guys have made a big mistake.
Speaker 6 (11:10):
I'm going to show the league put them in notic.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Yeah. I mean.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
My mindset is it was always just like because you know,
it ain't nothing new under the sun. Kind of that's
kind of how like my life went out of high school.
I wasn't really a high recruit or whatever. I was
called the system back because we ran I don't know,
if you know, it is like a triplesh I was
a full back. Yeah yeah, and I you know, just
hit it downhill whatever. But yeah, I like, you know,
(11:37):
beating the odds or I liked my backs against the
wall because I feel like I dived in that in
those situations. So yeah, kind of just you know, that's
just how I like to live my life. Anyway. I
love when people doubt me, because yeah, no, just doubt
do it for my loved ones.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
There's so many examples in the NFL, as well, the
guys come in and just make a big difference, like yourself.
I asked that Alexis, so I'll ask you as well.
The funniest person in the locker room is.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
The funniest person. Uh, I would say Darnell, Darnell or.
Speaker 6 (12:15):
He gave a different answer, So I'll definitely take that answer.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
I don't kick it around. I don't know. I don't
know too much about Sleigh, but I heard that one.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
We'll get to know even more this season. Just finally
for fans, for you as a player, what will it
take this team to make the next step in the postseason,
you know, to get that playoff with him?
Speaker 6 (12:36):
Push on? Do you think I.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
Think we just you know, when things get hard, we come,
you come together. You know, you get closer. Uh, don't
turn on each other because we've got some ballers on
our team. As long as we keep the unity.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Will be shirt under. Seven weeks to the game in Dublin.
Historic first game and nobody can take that away from you.
You're always gonna have that on your TV, hopefully touched
with he played in that first game. For all of
us guys and girls in Ireland, it means the absolute
world see if travels out there, but more and more importantly,
from everybody listening to this say the very our best
look this season. We can't wait to see what's gonna
(13:10):
happen to feel more than thank you, very very much,
thank you for having me.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
