Welcome back into the show programming Note. Normally after our
show would be the Kenny Brooks Show and then BBN Radio.
But Darren Hendrick and Coach Brooks, instead of doing a
radio show, are going to do a ballgame. It's gonna
be the Real, the Real Rub Show. That's right down
at Ole Miss at the top of the hour, Kentucky.
(05:58):
The women moved into the top ten this week, first
time this season, and they'll play at Ole Miss coming
up the top of the hour.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
So uh, they have got it rolling.
Speaker 5 (06:05):
And Mark Pope, your guys got back on track Saturday
in a very authoritative way.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yeah, it was a good night for us. I was
proud of our guys.
Speaker 6 (06:13):
It was nice to have a couple of guys back
on the floor and and our guys resolve was was
really solid, uh against a really talented UH South Carolina
team that that has had some some misfortune. You know,
they've played so many close games. But I thought our
guys were were terrific in their focus.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
I think I looked five of their nine SEC losses
were five points or less.
Speaker 12 (06:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (06:37):
And Lamont paris a terrific coach. Obviously, what he did
last year was really special. He's got one of the
one of the premier players in the league on that roster.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
They're good team defensively. I know that was a big
point of emphasis going into that game. And what did
when you looked at the tape the next day, what
did you like best?
Speaker 6 (06:54):
Well, we had some We had some presence on the ball,
which is really important for us, you know, to start off.
It was nice to have the Mott back, uh, you know,
just just back.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
On the floor.
Speaker 6 (07:06):
He's an impact for us in terms of have some
prints on the ball. I thought our bigs were much
more active, certainly than they were against the old Myths.
I thought they were they were they were much improved.
I thought you had stand up performances from guys like
Kobe Bray that were all special.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
And when you play the way you guys did, really
attacking those ball screens, it takes a lot of communication
and and covering for your teammate behind that, right.
Speaker 6 (07:28):
Yeah, And you know it's you know, it's a little
bit feast or famine's it can be. You know, it
can put you in in harm's way, but our guys
were pretty judicious. And what's interesting is you go into
a game and maybe you have a really aggressive posture
on a dribble handoff. Let's say you have a really
aggressive posture on that and.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
So you you you.
Speaker 6 (07:49):
Kind of game planet scheme it and think about it
and try and install it, and then it only happens
three times in the whole half, right, So you think
you have a place where you have a really aggressive posture,
but the action only had happens in a place where
you're navigating that way.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
And that was a little bit the case for us.
Speaker 6 (08:05):
But every time you get a hit, and every time
we can find a hit at being a little bit
more aggressive where we don't where we cover ourselves.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Is pretty great.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
We saw the connective thread of this program back at
your introductory news conference and all those guys from different
eras getting off the bus. They had the fiftieth anniversary
of the seventy five national runner up team this weekend,
when somebody had asked him one of the questions, we've
got if you guys interacted with them. I don't know
if you did or not, but there is a connection there,
whether you got to see them this weekend or not.
Speaker 6 (08:34):
Yeah, I mean talk about legends, right, guys that you
know you always look back and you think about the
guys that have really built this program and what an
incredible year that was and certainly an incredibly talented roster
and terrific guys.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
All Right, we're gonna get to a break.
Speaker 5 (08:48):
A lot of good questions already lined up on X
at UK Sports Network and spots open on the phone lines.
Go ahead and jump on board, and we will get
it rolling when we come right back. Watch BBN Game

We are back on the UK Healthcare Mark Pope Show
and we're gonna get right down to business. We will
start with a call from Edward and Louisville on the
Clark's Pumping Shop phone line.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
Edward, what do you have for us?
Speaker 12 (12:45):
Hey, coach? How are we doing?
Speaker 2 (12:47):
Great? Edward? Thanks for calling you. Yep, So I.
Speaker 19 (12:51):
Got a quick, just two parter for you.
Speaker 12 (12:53):
And now I was gonna hang up and listen if
that's all right. So I'm a UK grad. I love
Kentucky basketball.
Speaker 19 (12:58):
In my whole life. I'm twenty three. I love what
you do. I appreciate you.
Speaker 12 (13:02):
My first question was.
Speaker 19 (13:04):
I've noticed against some of those more physical teams like
Tennessee and Old Miss that high ball pressure really gets.
Speaker 12 (13:10):
To us and we're trying to go through our zoom action.
I would just love to know, even on a general.
Speaker 19 (13:15):
Coaching level, like what's the remedy when teams are playing
you very high up in those leverage situations.
Speaker 20 (13:21):
That would be my first question.
Speaker 6 (13:23):
Yeah, Edward, A great question. And so there's a there's
a bunch there. One is the farther you can push
us out on the floor, the less effective it is,
for sure. And what we've been seeing especially is is
we kind of lost Lamont for the last couple of weeks,
just just functioning without him. His teams were really trying
to push us up the floor and doing it somewhat successfully.
(13:46):
This is where we kind of rely on our fives
to handle the ball more really crucial for our guys
to find a way inside the three. And there's a
lot of ways you can do that. You can do
it off the bounce, you could do it off the pass,
you could do it off of a off of a
like an early drag action. You could do it off
of a step up and pop action. You can do
it off of a ram screen option. So you'll see
(14:07):
us work all kinds of ways to try and find
a catch inside the three or work our way inside
the three. And the second thing is you can work
a bunch of backscreen options to kind of relieve some
of that pressure where you're where you're setting early backscreens
on on our.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
Fours and fives. Uh And and.
Speaker 6 (14:24):
We'll also work flare flare screens also, and so all
of that is designed to kind of get in into
more of a scoring area where our stacks and and
and our flows, uh, and our our pyramid actions are
a little more effective. So the answer is, yes, there's
a there's a myriad of ways where we're trying to
attack it, and it certainly is more difficult, uh, you know,
(14:46):
when we're playing with a little bit of a limited roster.
But but we're getting better at it. Actually we're getting
better at executing with a limited roster. So so we're
seeing progress. What's your second question.
Speaker 12 (14:57):
I really appreciate it, coach.
Speaker 19 (14:59):
Yes, the next thing, Coach, feel free to go all
the way back to when you first started coaching, but
I would just love to know, maybe on a trades level,
from some of your best defensive teams, what are you
looking for in terms of scheme like roster like, what
do you really like when putting together a highly effective
defensive group.
Speaker 12 (15:17):
Pick any team you want. But thank coach, appreciate you.
Speaker 6 (15:20):
Ed, thanks for the call man on the defensive side
of the ball. I mean, just in a really raw sense,
you'd like to have length and athleticism for sure. What's
been really interesting for us is I was actually just
today speaking with a couple of national media members and
and and I think all of us are paying close
(15:45):
attention to the ever increasing physicality of the game. Is
actually taken a lot of us by surprise about where
the whistle lands. I'm actually surprised about how I'm able
to coach our guys right now. I'm actually surprised at
what I can coach our guys to do. And so
that that was you know, I talked about length and mobility. Uh,
(16:08):
but but this physicality part of the game, starting on
the glass, but also in the sense of being able
to kind of body guys up. You know, is thisually
I was in the I was in the n b
A when when they took away hand checks, it was
it was a it was a it was a really
monumental change in the way the NBA is is was called.
(16:32):
And now you know, if I've balled, if I have
the ball in my hands on the on the wing,
you know, a defender can actually put two hands right
into my chest and there's no call and just kind
of leave them there. So that's that's a you know,
the the physical part of this game is actually to
become an increasingly important component of being a great defensive team.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Is is just uh, it's just increased uh.
Speaker 6 (16:56):
Brute strength and physicality and ability to move bodies with
your hips and and and with your forearm. And then
the the you know, the the final piece uh that
that's probably equally is important once you get through all
those raw skills is just the connectedness of the team
as a unit. So you know, everybody is gonna struggle
(17:17):
in isolation guarding. But if you can make uh, complicated
plays into one on five plays, you'll have a lot
of success. And so that goes through every scheme, through
every uh, you know, approach in terms of pressure, you know,
like a uh you know, an all out pressure vibe
(17:37):
that you might feel with some teams in our league too,
uh to you know, all the way to you know,
uh a Virginia style, Tony Bennett's style, uh you know
defense where it's very much like a containment and and
nothing easy and show the same thing every single time defense.
So through all the genres of defense, teams connected.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
This is crucial. Great questions, thanks.
Speaker 5 (18:01):
Ver, thank you, Edward Brandon sends in one to at
UK Sports Network. What things do you have to adjust
from the first time you played Tennessee just two weeks ago.
Speaker 6 (18:12):
Yes, that's a great question, And that's the fun of
the second game of the series, because you're just you're anticipating,
you're trying to anticipate moves. What you do on a
raw level is is kind of break down all the
games they played since and especially your own game film.
And then what you do is you don't really anticipate
you're playing against the same team that you played. You
(18:33):
anticipate that you're playing against the team that's making all
the adjustments to take away the things you were successful
of successful within that game. And so there's some real
gamesmanship that goes into it.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
Clearly.
Speaker 6 (18:45):
You know, Tennessee is the number one, two or three
defensive team in the country, depending on what metrics you
look at. They're one of the top offensive rebounding teams
in the country, depending on what metric you look at.
And and so their potent very very potently in both
those ways, and both those things will continue to be
mainstays of of the challenges in facing them. But they're
(19:08):
also running some new actions. Uh, you know, they're they're
they actually have two distinct actions that they've kind of
added since we played them. Uh, there's a little bit
of a different personnel package that we'll have because because
we will have Lamont Butler and so you know, there
there are a lot of dynamites like that that will change,
but a lot of things will be similar.
Speaker 5 (19:29):
And that was the game Andrew tried to come back.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
Yep, couldn't go.
Speaker 6 (19:32):
So we should will have a full Andrew. You know,
we're gonna you know, looks like we're not gonna have
a Jackson Robinson, but we'll, you know, we'll we'll kind
of see how things pan out tomorrow game time. But
so you know, that's always a pretty interesting dynamic.
Speaker 5 (19:48):

Travis sen Mount Sterling.
Speaker 2 (22:15):
What do you have for us? Yes? Can you hear
me loud and clear?
Speaker 22 (22:22):
Okay, First thing I want to say, tell Pope thanks
for everything that he's done and done for the program.
And all of the players think all of them, I
think they're having an amazing season. But I have two things.
I was just wondering what's going on with Jackson and Kobe,
(22:42):
you know, see them getting beat a lot on defense.
Is it just a playing style or is something wrong
like health wise? And I was wondering if any of
the freshmen's are going to get some playing time this week.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
Travis, thanks for calling man great questions. Let me try
and take him one at a time. So Jackson Robinson
UH has been really really good for us defensively.
Speaker 6 (23:09):
In fact, he took a major yeoman's task into Tennessee,
having to translate to not just the point guard position
handling the ball, but also being the point of attack
with US guarding and and and guarding.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
UH. You know, an all.
Speaker 6 (23:27):
League player who is just you know, all time steels
leader in the history of Tennessee, and he shoot forty
percent from the three point line on he didn't know
Ziegler didn't shoot great against us, and he was actually
incredible executing the game plan there and then and then
Kobe Brea is you know, he's been challenged a little
bit defensively, and he has had some challenges defensively for sure.
(23:51):
But the great thing about Kobe He's coming off of
his best defensive performance of his career and and certainly
was the MVP of our defense UH on Saturday. UH
guarding South Carolina. So, uh, Kobe is is he was
great again today, his focus defensively today and practice, Travis,
(24:13):
if you were there, man, you would have been like,
that's my guy, he is guarding. And so I'm really
proud of that for he's making and so yes, Uh,
those two are taking on huge challenges, certainly defensively, especially
as they've kind of had to bump up a position,
you know, from from kind of both playing the three
to now playing twos and playing ones. Uh, but I
do think they're making tremendous progress. Great question in terms
(24:36):
of these rookies, Uh, they're gonna have to up there.
You know, as long as we're dealing with these these
roster issues where you know, just these health issues. Uh,
we're counting on those young players to to to really
make huge contributions. And now we're at the point of
the season where it's not just being on the court
and and and.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
Buying us a little bit of rest time.
Speaker 6 (24:59):
They need to come out and and and win games
for us, and and they're ready. It's certainly gonna be
the biggest challenge of their lives. But we have huge
expectations for him. I know they can do it and
and the time is now, so uh, we'll see those
guys on the court a little bit more and we
can't wait to get them out there.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
Thank you. Travis.
Speaker 5 (25:15):
Colin Chandler, one of those freshmen had a really good
game down at Tennessee.
Speaker 6 (25:19):
Defensively, yeah, he was. He was a star defensively at Tennessee.
I thought he was absolutely terrific with a really really
difficult defensive assignment. He was really locked in. This is
a this is a pretty good defensive matchup for him
in terms of assignment, and and he's gonna have to
help us tomorrow for sure.
Speaker 5 (25:34):
Let's go back to the Clark's Pumpin' Chop phone line
and Ashland is the next stop.
Speaker 2 (25:40):
Josh, what do you have?
Speaker 20 (25:43):
Hey Josh, Hey you guys, Hey, guys, appreciate you taking
my call, no question. Uh, I just wanted to say
thank you to coach Pope. I have been a Wildcat
fan for a very long time. Don't know if you
remember the store that used to be in Reparena called
Kentucky Corn used to be co owner and manager and man,
(26:05):
I got to meet you before when I was very young. Yeah,
he used to be the former manager and co owner,
and I've met UK players all the way back from
ninety four up to you know, when he passed about
twenty years ago. Now, I'm not going to age myself
too badly, but i just want to thank you because
you've really brought back to me watching UK basketball, the
(26:25):
memories that I had with him and the rest of
my family, and just what that felt like to really
feel joy and happiness watching the team win, lose, a draw.
Just just those memories. Man, You've brought those back and
I appreciate it. So thank you and God bless you.
Speaker 23 (26:39):
Man.
Speaker 2 (26:40):
I love you, Josh. Thanks for calling.
Speaker 6 (26:42):
And Kentucky Corner is legendary. I mean, talk about a
staple of for all BBN growing up. So you know,
thank you and your family for the great work on
that and and I feel it too.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
Man.
Speaker 6 (26:56):
It's just as this this, you know, like we're all
doing this together, and it's the best thing about Kentucky
basketball is that we're all sharing this journey together and
so hanging there with these guys because they still got
a ton of like magic left in them as we
kind of collect ourselves and hopefully find a way to
a little bit better health and a little better execution.
(27:19):
I think we've got some magic right around the corner.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
So let's go. Brother, Let's keep in joying. Josh, thank you.
Speaker 5 (27:24):
Let's go to our Alumni Hall Fan Question of the
Week comes from Barry And if you send us in
a question for Alumni Hall Fan Question of the Week
and yours gets picked, you could win a twenty five
dollars gift card from Alumni Hall. What's the biggest difference
or change that you've seen from when you played here
in the nineties to now being the coach at Kentucky.
Speaker 6 (27:46):
Oh, this might be colored by recency bias, but I
think the biggest change to me is the influence of
social media.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
It just is, I think.
Speaker 6 (27:56):
And when I say that, I'm thinking about these athletes
experience versus h you know, versus my experience as an
athlete here. Certainly you know I say this all the time.
But when I was here as a player, it was
it was pandemonium everywhere you went. But when you went
into the Wildcat Lodge and sat in your room, there
was solitude.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
There was quiet.
Speaker 6 (28:14):
And this was long long ago, when you know, students
would actually go to the library and study and you
could find a place in the library and in the
back steel shelves. If you guys remember like the backpack,
where it could be really quiet and you could have solitude.
And I feel like for our guys with the impact
of social media, when they go into their room or
(28:35):
or you know, go to a figurative library, it's almost
when things get noisiest because everybody on their phone get
to them. So I think that's you know, I think
that's a massively.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
It's just a it's just a huge change. But in
terms of.
Speaker 6 (28:50):
The opportunity to play here, it's still there's no place
like it anywhere in basketball in terms of playing hare
at Kentucky, and it's the greatest fan base in the world,
and in all that's the same.
Speaker 5 (29:03):
Thank you for the question, and congrats on the Alumni
Hall gift card. We are coming up on the bottom
of the hour, so we'll take our next break. When
we come back, We're gonna here a brief interview that

ten for the first time this season, the number eight
in the country, and they will take that new ranking
out for a test drive against the old Miss Rebels
(32:59):
in Oxford Tonight.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
Darren Headrick will be on the call on.
Speaker 5 (33:02):
These UK Sports Network stations, and earlier today Darren had
a chance to get a visit with coach Brooks.
Speaker 25 (33:10):
Coach looking at these old Miss Rebels, the one thing
they want to do is turn you over, isn't it.
Speaker 27 (33:14):
Yeah, that's their bread and butter that they thrive on
causing chaos. And our message today was to control the chaos.
And we understand that we're not gonna play a perfect
basketball game, but you have to limit live ball turnovers.
You have to understand that they're going to be aggressive
on both ends of the floor, and then we have
to go out and make sure we play early, deep
in so that we can stay out of out trouble.
(33:35):
And that's something that's plagued us the last few games
and it's kind of really made us play checkers instead
of being able to play chess. You know, you got
to have everyone available to you so that you can play.
You know, as we get deeper into the season, you know,
everybody's really got a rotation of about eight, and we
have really good rotation of eight if we can just
have everybody available to us. So last game was kind
(33:56):
of an anomaly because of the way Oklahoma plays, but
this is this is going to be somewhat similar because
they're very, very aggressive on both ends of the floor
and we have to play without fouling.
Speaker 23 (34:06):
If they don't get the turnovers to generate offense.
Speaker 25 (34:08):
What are some things they like to do in a
half court to try and score.
Speaker 27 (34:11):
Well, you know, they do a lot of isolation and
they put their players in their best possible positions and
then they really attack you. You know they will. They
may go a little bit bigger tonight. Normally they start
their centers to six foot, but everybody else is pretty
much long and athletics. So we just have to be
able to match up with them well and make them
(34:33):
play our type of basketball game. But we just have
to make and then the other big key for us
is rebounding the basketball. We need to rebound the basketball
and not give them and limit their second chance opportunities.
And if we can do that, a number one, it
gives them less opportunities to score, but it also gives
us an opportunity to do what we do best and
as they get out on the fast break, that is.
Speaker 5 (34:52):
Coach Kenny Brooks and Darren will be on the call

Kentucky and Tennessee tomorrow night and Mark Pope is here
taking your questions. All right, You threw out something there
a little bit ago, and I thought maybe one of
our callers might follow up. Since they didn't. Can you
elaborate on Jackson Robinson your comment about him?
Speaker 6 (35:36):
What did I say about jos You just said we
may not have Oh yeah, So Jax and Lamont are
just a patchwork. Every single day we're we're seeing how
good a tape job we can give them, and how
many you know, how much treatment and therapy we give them,
and roll them out there and see where we get.
There's a there's probably a legitimate chance.
Speaker 2 (35:59):
I think.
Speaker 6 (35:59):
I think there's there's a solid chance, at least I'm
hopeful that we'll see Lamont again tomorrow. I think there's
equally as challenge a chance to get Jack's on the floor.
But I also believe in miracles, so we'll see how
it goes with Jacks, but you know it's it's gonna
be it's gonna be touch and go with those guys
for the next few weeks.
Speaker 5 (36:16):
All right, let's go back to a question here off
the social media feed from Bill at UK Sports Network.
Why on the offensive end, does I'm already play so
much fifteen plus feet from the basket and with his
back to the basket, as big and strong as he is,
couldn't he be more effective closer.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
To the basket?
Speaker 6 (36:33):
I So I actually during the break, I got to
go Leanne and my girls and one of her best
friends of the world are here, and so I actually
went back and was talking to them during our break,
and while I was there, they had actually created an
AI generated list of things I could say other than
(36:53):
great question, because there's they're so tired of me saying
great question, And so I was totally prepared to say
I was thinking about that same thing all day to day,
but it didn't really fit with the question.
Speaker 2 (37:06):
So now I'm totally stuck. Where's the list, babe? The
other list? Excellent question, I was, but I'm really yep, Okay, well.
Speaker 5 (37:17):
Yeah, but you're really not glad you asked that because
you hadn't thought about it.
Speaker 6 (37:20):
So here's the thing, Mari Williams is got one of
the unique skill sets in all of college basketball.
Speaker 2 (37:29):
Very in fact, there hasn't been.
Speaker 6 (37:31):
You have to verify this because I'm gonna say something
I can't verify its true.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
But I'm strongly.
Speaker 6 (37:35):
Suggesting it's true that there's not a seven footer in
the country that's gone on the road to play a
top twenty five opponent and been Tennis's three turnovers.
Speaker 2 (37:44):
And I can't challenge that.
Speaker 6 (37:47):
If there has this year, then I just haven't seen it,
but I miss a lot. So my point being is
is Amari is so incredibly effective in dangers and he's
such a he's such a unique force. He's a one
of one in terms of how he's able to function
in our offense initiating offense. Clearly, he can also be
(38:10):
really really effective around the rim, where he becomes a
little bit more normal effective, and certainly we want to
use that. And he's been doing amazing work on the glass,
especially on the defensive glass, and he's done some really
solid work in the post. At Ole miss he scored
our first four points on isolation post work that was
(38:31):
really important. So all of that's important, but also he's
got this really incredible skill set away from the basket
that we're trying to use and grow, and and he's
he's taken.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
In like a sponge. It's awesome.
Speaker 5 (38:43):
Bill, thank you for the question. Let's go back to
the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line. Andy is listening in
Georgia and what is your question for Coach Pope?
Speaker 29 (38:54):
Hey, welcome back, coach. So I can't see how excited
the alumni are to have the program, you know, heading
in the right direction and energize, and I appreciate your
your positive and intelligent approach. I'm going to continue with
the defensive theme of this show. I was wondering, how
do you keep the guys motivated to you know, to
(39:17):
keep that lockdown defense game after game. I know it's
frustrating to you, and of course that can make the
difference between you know, being a very good team and
being a great team. In the second part, I'm sure
you as an escaped your notice that Coach p has
brought Saint John's back into relevance. Do you talk to
him like off season or how do you you know?
(39:39):
I'm sure you compare notes with coaches or mentors and
can you talk about sort of how that works with you.
Speaker 6 (39:46):
Yeah, and I've been thinking about the same thing all
day long, actually, and so thank you for asking the question.
The the U so keeping our guys more and focus
on the defensive end. We recognize what the challenge is,
our guys are feeling it, and we found you know,
it's what's really fun about a team. And this is
(40:09):
one of the beautiful things about the organic nature of
a team is that you actually find answers in places
where you might not have suspected it. Like if you
told me a week ago that Kobe Bryant was gonna
be a catalyst on the defensive end and take on
a leadership role on the defensive end and be an
inspiring force on the defensive end, I would have said, Ah,
(40:30):
I don't know if I'm actually feeling that, but I'm
believing that right now. And that's the beauty of a team.
And and that's it's you know, we talk about a
player led team all the time, and so if if
if it's my voice that has to fight to motivate
our team to to to maintain focus on the defensive
(40:52):
end and to get better and better over the next
three months. Then it's gonna it's gonna it's gonna face
some some points where it's muted. But if this comes
from different leadership, from within our team, from guys' actions
on the floor, it has real staying power. And so
that's what you do as a coach is you want
your voice to be heard. You want to you want
(41:12):
to give some direction and sometimes you you know, you
want to burn a little.
Speaker 2 (41:17):
White hot and at the same time.
Speaker 6 (41:19):
You'd like to kind of go find guys individual that
you can inspire to have a leadership voice on the team.
And so if we're good at this, then we're gonna
keep making progress. And we're pretty good, so I expect
we can keep making progress. Great question, Thank you much.
Speaker 2 (41:33):
We're gonna get to a break.

Dine in carry out available if you're having a game

his question coming in at UK Sports Network's interesting question, Uh,
do you guys chart the depth of three point attempts
and get a reading of you know, who's who's better
(44:27):
from farther or who needs to be in closer before
they take their three, et cetera.
Speaker 2 (44:31):
Who's this question from Brandon? Brandon?
Speaker 6 (44:34):
Uh, you know, that's something many people wonder about. It's
definitely worth discussing. So let's dive into that for a second. Okay,
So on the on the first side of that, we
actually we actually designate guys.
Speaker 2 (44:50):
Who we want to be deep deep shooters.
Speaker 6 (44:52):
So we'll have guys that work all summer long from
the NBA three point line, and we'll have guys get
d from from double the NBA three point line, so
a good six six and a half feet off the
three point line, and those guys that kind of have
that skill set we really encourage to do that because
it forces teams to guard so much space and it's
(45:14):
not just it's not just spreading the four originally, but
it's like you get in a ball screen, you know,
a pick and role play. You've got a role going downhill,
you've got a ballhander buying a driving line getting downhill,
and then you've got a snap on the weak side
that's lifting up. And so what you've done is you've
isolated a tag defender. You have a one on two
for just a moment. You have a one on two
(45:34):
defender and he's got to cover the role and he's
got to cover the snap. And that's the player from
the corner of this lifting. And if that player can
lift to twenty seven feet, it's a totally different dynamic
than he's lifted to twenty three, and so it makes
it nearly.
Speaker 2 (45:48):
Impossible to guard.
Speaker 6 (45:49):
So we actually spend a lot of time on that
is something that's really important for us. We also like
we love transition threes, and I love transition threes from
from twur steps to three steps beyond the three point
one line because it just expands the floor so much.
We have some guys that live in that space and
some guys that don't. Surprisingly, we shoot a half court
shot to finish our shooting competition.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
At the end of every shoot around. And uh, the
most surprising.
Speaker 6 (46:18):
Uh kind of regular winner is Amari Williams, if you
can believe that.
Speaker 2 (46:24):
Now.
Speaker 6 (46:25):
We haven't tasked him with doing that in a game yet,
but we have a bunch of guys that can really
shoot the ball. And definitely, Uh, the three point line
is not the extent of range. If right now, if
you're in college basketball, if you're all your three point
shots are totes of the three point line, it means
you're playing in a pretty small area and it gives
the defense a little bit of advantage.
Speaker 2 (46:45):
Interesting question. Thank you, uh Patrick and Oldham County.
Speaker 5 (46:47):
You're next up on the Clark's Pumping Shot phone line.
Speaker 30 (46:52):
Hey Patrick, Hey coach, coach. I just wanted to thank
you for coming back and build the champion. Certainly, thank you,
guys can do it. My question would be, are you
guys good or do you have any players design for
(47:13):
Ai and Derris?
Speaker 2 (47:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (47:17):
Patrick, thank you so much for calling in and I
hope you know how how grateful we are to be here.
Speaker 17 (47:24):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (47:25):
Sorry, I'm just taking a beating from the peanut gallery
over here.
Speaker 2 (47:29):
They're crushing me for high respond to these questions. Yes, so,
I was.
Speaker 6 (47:34):
I was really pleased to find space to put Brandon,
Garrison and Amario on the floor together.
Speaker 17 (47:41):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (47:41):
They played more minutes together against South Carolina than they
have all season long. At the pace of the game
allowed that a little bit foul. Uh, situations of the
game allowed that. Uh, the the lineup that South Carolina
was putting on the floor allowed that. So there's a
lot of circumstances that led us to be able to
do that. But we are getting a small package of offensive,
(48:05):
not necessarily plays, but kind of spacing where we feel
really really comfortable having those two on the floor together
and and having that dynamic is going to be really
important in some crucial moments as we move forward in
the season.
Speaker 5 (48:16):
From JR at UK Sports Network looking for a Kerk
Cresa update.
Speaker 6 (48:22):
I appreciate you asking that JR apparently deb Is this
true that there was Apparently there was a social media
was a buzz today during practice that Kerk Chris was
participating in practice.
Speaker 2 (48:38):
It's what we're told.
Speaker 6 (48:41):
Oh, did am I supposed to comment on it if
you want to. Oh, now, Kerr was not practicing today.
I would love to let that hang out in the air,
but he wasn't he sees still a ways away. You know,
we're still we're still hoping that we make progress, but
he's a little bit of ways away.
Speaker 2 (48:57):
All right, Thank you Jr.
Speaker 5 (48:59):
Let's try to you get We've got time to get
one more in here real quickly from Owensborough.
Speaker 2 (49:04):
Roger, what do you have?
Speaker 31 (49:06):
Yeah, right here? Thanks for taking my call, Coach Pope,
and I'm gonna take the heat off of you right
off the bat that these are not great questions, okay,
and uh the only one of the questions out Roger, thank.
Speaker 6 (49:20):
You, thank you, thank you for your very average questions.
Speaker 2 (49:24):
I appreciate that.
Speaker 31 (49:27):
But uh, is there a reason they don't set double
screens or screens for Oliver Kobe and Oliver shooters to
get wide open instead of contestant theories? And it seemed
like we played better when we pushed the ball up
the floor faster. Now that's just my guess. But I'll
get off here and let your answer.
Speaker 6 (49:48):
Thank you, Roger, uh for I'll start with the pace
excellent observation. Yes, uh, we we are hungry for pace.
We're at our very best have pace in this game.
And if we can't create pace in the full court
we certainly need to create in the half court. We've
been stymied a little bit just you know.
Speaker 2 (50:08):
It's uh, we count on our point guards.
Speaker 6 (50:10):
We count on current lamont to be major, major catalysts
for our pace.
Speaker 2 (50:15):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (50:15):
There are two most dangerous explosive ball handlers. There are
two most creative passers. There are guys with the greatest
ability to get downhill. We've just been without those guys.
And so you know, for me, it's always been a
part of the way that my team's played that our
point guard carries such a huge responsibility for for being
a catalyst, uh to the pace that we play with.
(50:38):
And and you know, we just haven't had those guys,
So that's been part of it. We also have teams
that are trying to exert more pressure in the back
court uh to try and slow us down, and and
and so us trying to fabricate ways to do that
where we could take some pressure off of our makeshift
point guards. All of that's led to a little bit
of a slow down and pace. Although against South Carolina
(51:00):
we had one of our best half court cutting games
that we've had all year long. So there's two ways
we can find pace. We can find pace in the
full court, which we love because it keeps the.
Speaker 2 (51:09):
Game wide open.
Speaker 6 (51:09):
And if we can't, we can still manufacture pace in
the half court, which we did against a terrific you know,
South Carolina is a terrific defensive team and our guys
were really effective creating pace at the half court. So
that was the second part of the question. And the
first part of the question is escaping me right now
and me too because you know why, because it was
an average question.
Speaker 2 (51:27):
Yeah, I guess so you know what. I'm sorry, but
thanks for calling Roger. We appreciate it. Roger. Thanks Mandans
made a good sport.

Communication became increasingly difficult for me, not only as a
nurse practitioner, but also as a mother. My husband and
my daughters often acted as a translator for me. I
was becoming quite frustrated, and that's when I found Bluegrass
Hearing Clinic. When I met doctor Ewert, I immediately felt
like I was talking to a friend. Since getting my
hearing aids, life changed dramatically. Communication became a much smoother experience.
(54:12):
I'm very thankful for Bluegrass Hearing Clinic.

One call and you'll know where to dig every time.
(54:41):

Speaker 2 (55:06):
Sherry in the Highlands. What do you have, Sherry?
Speaker 33 (55:10):
Well, of course, being from Harlan, Kentucky, Go Trent Noah
up here. But my question is this and social media,
the comments and things that are made. I know the
boys have access to Facebook and all the groups on
social media. How do you handle the negative? I know
the positive list them up, but how do you handle
the negative comments when they see what's going on?
Speaker 2 (55:31):
Yes, it's a Sherry. That's a massive challenge.
Speaker 6 (55:37):
Actually not just for athletes, but it seems like for
every young person, maybe for everybody in the world right now.
It's such a challenge on how to digest the things
that are kind of belligerently meaninglessly written on social media. Right,
for some reason, you know, somebody that we've never met
(55:57):
and have no idea who they are, because we see
a comment in print. Somehow we give it some weight,
which is a really curious part of the human condition
right now. For our guys, we talk about it all
the time. We're like, guys, just stay off your phone
as much you can. Now that's a little bit of
a losing battle sometimes, But what we really wanted guys
(56:19):
to do is pay attention. And this is actually like
the teachings of Leanne Pope, she's actually the master this.
But pay attention to how what you see on social
media is making you feel. Pay attention to how much
of your emotional reservoir and how much of your brain
power the things that you see on social media is
(56:43):
taking up, Like how much is it wasting?
Speaker 2 (56:46):
Right?
Speaker 6 (56:47):
And if our guys will just pay attention, and I
think they'll kind of find their way into navigating. I've
had players actually that have gone totally cold and dark
on social media in terms of their own consumption and
turned it over to their parent. Their mom has been
in charge of their social media count during the season.
Those have actually been some of my healthiest, most competitive
(57:10):
players because they're not getting distracted from a minute to minute,
day to day basis on some random comment that somebody
made that they never would listen to if it was
in person.
Speaker 2 (57:21):
Right. I also have guys that you know are.
Speaker 6 (57:24):
Kind of like have have have made a commitment to
not read any comments, right, And there's every kind of
gauge along the way, but it certainly is a phenomenon
that all of our guys are trying to deal with.
Speaker 2 (57:35):
Good luck Tomorrow night, Thank you brother Cats in the Balls.
Speaker 5 (57:38):
