a few technical issues right there at the start. So
we are into the show and joined here on the

(05:31):
UK Healthcare of Mark Polk Show by Mark Pope. And
at this point the autopsies complete, as we always say,
so what was it like to go through?

Speaker 1 (05:39):
It was issuing.

Speaker 15 (05:41):
We started with some technical issues because we finished the
game with some technical issues. It was quite quite unfortunate.
But I would like to spend the whole hour talking
about the Tennessee game.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Can we do that? Should we go back to why not?
The finish of that was outstanding.

Speaker 15 (06:01):
Yes, and that that's our season right now as we
kind of work our way through all the things working
on our way through, and uh, and it's it's these
incredible moments and some moments that where we were going
to learn how to be incredible, and it's it's both
those and and so it's been a great growing experience
for us for sure, and it's really challenging us in
the best possible ways.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
Let me detur from that for just a second. There's
some ins info there you have in front of you before.
As a lead up to the Kentucky Vandy game on Wednesday,
the flooding, particularly in an eastern part of the state,
has just been catastrophic over the weekend, and there's an
effort that UK Athletics is involved in to help get
some supplies and some funds to those folks.

Speaker 15 (06:44):
Yeah, we're really excited about it, about just finding a
way to help. In fact, I was we had finished
the game and and uh, it was a it was
a little bit of a brutal finish, and and we
dealt with all the post game stuff and then I
got on the plane, sat down by Mitch. Mitch was like, hey,
I know you probably haven't heard, but things are really
hard in eastern Kentucky and so he he uh went

(07:07):
on to show me uh some some film before we
took off. And then the last you know, forty eight
hours has been uh kind of talking to everybody, you know,
uh from communication with everybody at UK, with President Capaluto
and and and of course Mitch and the Athletic apartment
and and the coaches, Coach Tubes and coachman Jones and

(07:30):
Coach Brooks and and the and the rest of the
coaches and and uh, you know, people that are important
to us, everybody at the Craft Foundation and and everybody
trying to figure out how we can help, what difference
we can make, and and so just in the very
near future, we're pretty excited about doing a drive at
the game on Wednesday. So we're inviting everybody that comes

(07:54):
out to the game too to bring any type of
donations Nonparis foods, paper goods, cleaning supplies, bottled water.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
We'll have a.

Speaker 15 (08:06):
Massive eighteen wheeler, big you know, a big truck up
on High Street as you walk into the gym, and
and then we're gonna through UK philanthropies get that delivered
as quickly as we can. And that's just a first
thing that's a first of many to kind of help

(08:27):
our brothers and sisters in eastern Kentucky.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
And this is you.

Speaker 15 (08:32):
Know, we went through this three years ago, right, and
so this is something where there's emergent help needed, and
there's gonna be help needed for the next weeks and
months and years. And and so if anybody feels like
I did that night sitting in the plane trying to
figure out what we could do, here's one simple thing

(08:52):
that we can do. Is when the game, just on
your way out the door, just stop in your pantry
and get get a few rolls of paper towels or
toilet paper or some a couple can, uh, you know,
some some some beans or some beats or or anything
can nonperishable or some some riserroni or you know, I'm

(09:13):
pretty limited in my in my knowledge of food stuffs,
but some nonperishable foods, any cleaning supplies, and especially water,
and bring them with you to the game.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
And and that's just a beginning. Uh.

Speaker 15 (09:26):
And then if you if if you're interested in making
some financial donations contributions, you can go to go u
k dot e d u uh slash Flood Relief and
that'll take you right to Governor Bursher's uh uh disaster
relief effort where you can make contributions. But we'll keep

(09:48):
talking about this more and more and more. It's something
that's touched some of the guys on our team, uh
really specifically our guys. A lot of this has actually
come from our players where they're like, coach, what can
we do?

Speaker 1 (09:58):
What can we do? Uh?

Speaker 15 (10:00):
They filmed a little deal today at practice that they
were really excited about just trying to help this community.
So we're excited to do it. Hope everybody jumps in,
and we know we will because this is Kentucky.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
It's how we do it.

Speaker 3 (10:11):
And you can follow on social media the UK Athletics
account and UK Sports Network and you can be updated
on what's happening and how you'll be able to help
in UKA Athletics dot com on the website as well.

Speaker 15 (10:22):
Now, I would love for BBN shows out, man. I
would love for us all to fill up, fill up
this truck on Wednesday night, just just as just as
a first shot at this thing and be really special.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
So so grateful to everybody that's willing to kind of
make a contribution.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
Let me ask you the question that I know everybody
listening wants me to ask you any update on Lamont
and Jackson.

Speaker 15 (10:44):
Yeah, no, unfortunately, So they're both doing well. For Lamont,
he's actually moving pretty well. He still hasn't practice, done
any live play. But for him, it's just a matter
of how far how long does he have to get
where he can actually take a hit in the game.
That's the biggest question for him, and that's, you know,

(11:06):
that's gonna be a little bit of a guessing game.
We'll try and get him just some live stuff and
practice over the next week or so. For Jacks, you know,
he hasn't h He still hasn't done anything with his
right hands. He's done a ton of left hand shooting
and probably unsurprisingly he's making a lot of shots left handed.

(11:27):
So I am actually pushing him to just just tie
up the right wrist man, just get that thing safe
in a big cast, and let's go just play lefty
on Wednesday.

Speaker 1 (11:38):
I'm not sure he's prepared to do that. Yeah, that's
where we're in negotiations right now, trying to figure out.
So those guys are working really hard to try and
get better.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
All right, when we're finished, make sure you stick around
for the Bluegrass here and Clintic Kenny Brooks Show from
seven to seven thirty Eastern, followed by Clark's Pumping Shot

we've got phone lines open, so let's jump to the
Clark's Pump and Shop BBN phone line and bring on
Peyton to lead us off.

Speaker 19 (15:44):
Hello Peyton, Hello Tom, and hello coach Pope. I just
have a real quick question. I'm a young twenty four
year old from western Kentucky and I'm aspiring to be
a high school head coach. Nice and I try to
study a bunch of offenses, different stuff, and I really
liked the offense that you ran at Utah Valley, the
pistol offense with the handoff ball screen action. What made

(16:07):
you ultimately decide to change that when you went to
by are you and change to the five outdoom offense?
Thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (16:13):
Peyton. First of all, good luck, man.

Speaker 15 (16:15):
There's there's not a I'm telling you, it's it's one
of the great professions. It's a hard job, but it's
one of the great professions of the world. Man, So
good luck. My high school coach made such a huge
impact on my life. I love him so much. We
still talk to this day.

Speaker 1 (16:33):
He's still trying to call and text me and say,
you know what were you thinking? Can can you fix this?
And and I love him.

Speaker 15 (16:41):
In fact, he would uh he you know, I had him,
had him come out and visit and he's just been
so meaningful to me. So good luck with this career
is a great career. Uh well, we were running pistol.
The one thing that was tough for me about pistol
was we tried to add so many variations, but it's
such an on ball centric offense. In some ways, it

(17:03):
can get a little bit sterile because everything is coming
to the ball and or everything is going to the
rim and did the the the actions away from the
ball just can get a little bit pedestrian and basic
almost like you know, burn cuts and back cuts and
and and wing screens. You we were just felt a

(17:27):
little bit hamstrung in term of everything revolving around where
the ball was and not getting enough action off the ball.
So that's kind of been one of the main parts
of our evolution is we love the actions going away
for the ball. Now you can you can kind of uh,
you can, you can transform it into something more that way.
But that was that was our vibes. We just need

(17:47):
to have on the ball attack and we needed to
really really really challenged teams to guard away from the ball,
and so that's kind of we grew there.

Speaker 3 (17:54):
Good luck man, be cheering for you. Interesting question. Did
you come to what you transformed into through observing it
somewhere else or kind of building it with a staff
from your own?

Speaker 15 (18:07):
Well, there's nobody that knows the shortcomings of what you
do better than yourself, because it's the frustrations that you have.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
You know, you're always.

Speaker 15 (18:17):
Trying to grow and expand, and a great source of
inspiration in terms of how you grow is kind of
worried of like, ah, we're not you know, we're not
getting any leverage in this space. And so we kind
of stayed with this pistol off. It's really dedicated. We
had a terrific success with it the first two or
three years, and then we started to kind of morph
out of it. Then then we went to BYU and

(18:39):
we we had transformed a lot, and then we kind
of made another big jump in the last two years
at BYU, kind of with another evolution. But it's fun
that the game is begging you to grow and learn
and we're trying to be good students from the game.

Speaker 1 (18:52):
Let's go to our alumni hall.

Speaker 3 (18:53):
Fan. Question of the Week comes from Big Blue Santa.
Have you had time to review the two lane Yes,
lations Amari and then Otaga were called for crossing the
free throw line before the ball at the rim. Any
thoughts on why they kept occurring in that game?

Speaker 15 (19:10):
Yeah, so they were not laying violations, and and you
know it's it's in in in in.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
Fairness to.

Speaker 15 (19:21):
The referees, it's a it's a hard call, and when
you watch it in real time you can it's it's
easy to miss, like it's easy to go back and
freeze frame one specific frame. But even when you watch
the video, Amari's was was much more clear. Otega's was
a much more hard call, like you had to freeze

(19:43):
frame it exactly when the ball touched the rim to
see that he was still behind the line. But both
guys were so explosive crossing the line that I think
it just caught. Uh, it just caught the referees attention,
even though they weren't it. It's unfortunate. Now here's the
good thing. It doesn't fix things, like you live with

(20:05):
the frustration of the moment, just like we live with
the shots we missed and the mistakes we made.

Speaker 1 (20:12):
You live with it. But we're in constant contact with
the conference.

Speaker 15 (20:16):
Uh, the referee that made the call has been aware
and certainly and the idea is like can we all
get better? And and so they're you know, the referees
are working hard every single day to get better also,
just like we're working hard to get better. And it
doesn't it doesn't, you know, reduce the pain. But but
it is nice to know that the the that our

(20:38):
arbiter is really responsive and that our referees are also
trying to get better at a really really hard job,
you know, And that didn't determine the outcome of the game,
but you know, hopefully we'll all continue to get better.

Speaker 3 (20:51):

Speaker 3 (23:58):
You can also post on x UK Sports networker on
the Kentucky Basketball Facebook page. And let's go to a
question off the social media feed from Sarah at UK
Sports Network. She says, I know Kerr has been out
for a while. Is there any way he could get
a medical red shirt or is that not possible?

Speaker 15 (24:16):
Kerr could get a medical red shirt because he's the
two qualifications are less than thirty percent of the games played,
and he's barely under thirty percent and and not play
past the midpoint.

Speaker 1 (24:30):
So that's that, that is a possibility right now.

Speaker 15 (24:35):
I know he's he's anxiously trying to get back into
this thing, and it's just it's it's the recovery. He's
been probably a little bit slower than than any of
us would like, but so you know, that's going to
continue to be an ongoing process.

Speaker 3 (24:52):
Sarah, thank you for the question. Had one come in
on email from Todd who says he thinks Trent Noah
could be a good option for you at point guard
while your point guards are out other than Travis.

Speaker 15 (25:04):
What do you think, Well, we're doing point guard by
committee right now, and Trent is actually getting a shot
at that a little bit.

Speaker 1 (25:12):
You know.

Speaker 15 (25:13):
It's uh, he's been playing unbelievable basketball, Like I'm really
proud of him in.

Speaker 1 (25:18):
Six rebounds Saturday.

Speaker 15 (25:20):
Yeah, and he's you know, he had a really really
tough defensive assignment. Had a couple young mistakes down the stretch,
which is just a matter of being young. But I
think he's playing so well. He's probably not my first
choice kind of in this remade, rethought out kind of

(25:41):
you know, pseudo point guard position that we're trying to create.
And if if for no other reason, then he's already
carrying so much as a young player. I hate to
slow him down with by adding new responsibilities. I'd like
to kind of keep him fresh and great the way
he is. But everybody's kind of contributing the space. There

(26:03):
were times today in practice against pressure where he was
bringing the ball up the floor by design to try
and help us mitigate some of the some of the
you know, uncomfortable.

Speaker 1 (26:14):
Positions we're in right now, and he did a terrific job.
Good question, Todd, Thank you. Let's go back to the
Clark's Puppetshop phone line. Jay, What's what do you have
for coach Pope? He j Pope.

Speaker 19 (26:26):
I just wanted to yes, go ahead.

Speaker 20 (26:30):
I just wanted to say, I just want to say
thank you for all that your you and all UK
Athletics has done for Eastern Kentucky. Uh, that's my hometown
as far we live and stuff, and it's been it's
been devastating. But you know we're working tugy and we
fight hard and and you know, we we we come together.
One of when times nave and we just really appreciate

(26:54):
what all you all doing. And uh also I wanted
to say thank you again for bringing the excitements back
for Kentucky basketball, for myself and for.

Speaker 19 (27:06):
My whole family.

Speaker 20 (27:07):
We're a huge UKN fan base, and I don't think
I've ever been this excited again over Kentucky basketball, uh
for the last five six years. And it just it
just means a lot to me. And to see two
Kentucky boys play the their hearts out just about every game,
it just and honestly it makes me care up a

(27:29):
little bit because you know, that's that that's us, that's
our heart and soul with you know, fight and and and.

Speaker 19 (27:35):
Win and stuff.

Speaker 15 (27:55):
And and and I think about you and your family
and extended family friends that you may have in eastern
Kentucky now and and you know, everybody's going through this.
And I think the thing I hope the most is
is nobody's out there feeling like they're all by themselves
in this battle. I think it's one of the incredible

(28:15):
things we see it with BBN all the time. But
it's also the state of Kentucky. Just I don't know
if I've ever lived in a place where people care
about each other more. And and you know, it's been
unbelievable how many people just in the over the last
forty eight hours have we've connected with and reached out

(28:36):
with that are eager to help, not just now, but understanding. Uh,
you know, over the long haul. We had the incredible
opportunity to go do some work building homes in eastern Kentucky,
uh this fall, and and got to you know, have
a little community event out there in the evening and
and just being with people in their homes in their community.

Speaker 6 (29:00):
Uh.

Speaker 15 (29:00):
It just is the best. And so this is this
is this is easily tough times. But but none of
us are alone. Man, We're all fighting this together. So
I'm great for that call. And and it really is
magnificent of watching.

Speaker 1 (29:10):
These two, uh, these these two.

Speaker 15 (29:12):
Young guys from Kentucky step up and just play incredible basketball.
It's it's it's it's pretty great as well as our
whole team, you know, our whole team, Like every guy
on the team has been bugging me for the last
thirty six hours. But coach, what are we doing? Like,
how can we make a difference? How can we help?

Speaker 2 (29:30):
Uh?

Speaker 15 (29:30):
You know, Kentucky has welcomed us with open arms and
and and and it's a tough it's a really tough
UH spot for for for Eastern Kentucky right now. And
how can we be of service? And so just know
that we're all we're all fighting this battle together.

Speaker 1 (29:44):

and Shop phone line, Wayne, what's your question for Coach Pope.

Speaker 24 (34:04):
Well, Coach Polk, First of all, I want to thank
you for coming here. I love everything the team's doing.
I love watching them every minute of the game, win
or lose. I don't get mad anymore when we lose.
Don't ask me why, but I don't.

Speaker 1 (34:18):
I do just so you know, in case you're wondering, both.

Speaker 24 (34:23):
Of you, I realized that, but I used to get
a lot matter. But these guys are giving it. These
guys are giving it effort. And one thing question I
really had you had to ask you about, was, you know,
the missing the missing of our best defensive player. To me,

(34:44):
really didn't show up until we needed someone to guard
Johnson and that kid. I mean, they keep talking about
this kid from Duke and the player of the year,
when this other kid is going to be the leading
scorer in nb A for the year. I think he's
a much better player here in my opinion. And Mamont Butler, yes,

(35:09):
we missed him then. But I got actually got to
come to the Tennessee game thanks to ks R, and
I loved it. That was awesome being able to be
at that game.

Speaker 1 (35:19):
Thank you for coming because they was unbelievable. Well, so
I'll tell you this, we are.

Speaker 15 (35:27):
Listen, everybody goes through in terms of the injuries. It's
a space that every team deals with. It's been it's
been incredibly challenging for us, just positionally, but we also
have guys that are stepping up and putting their whole
heart out on the court, and.

Speaker 1 (35:46):
And we're gonna grow.

Speaker 15 (35:47):
We're we're just it's weird to be at this point
of the season and being a self discovery kind of
growing face. But that's where we are and and we'll
kind of figure that out.

Speaker 1 (35:58):
I do think that.

Speaker 15 (36:00):
That I'm gonna just go by numbers that twenty is
an incredibly talented player.

Speaker 1 (36:07):
He brings a lot to the table.

Speaker 15 (36:09):
I think one of the things that I like about
him is that he's you know, he's known as as
a score, but I think he's playing really hard on
on all phases of the ball. I think he's a
terrific talent. I think he's gonna have a long career
in this game. And there are a lot of great
young players, and so certainly he is he is make

(36:30):
an impact on the game.

Speaker 1 (36:32):
Thank you, Wayne for the question.

Speaker 3 (36:34):
You can hit us up on social media or on
the phone line if you have a question for coach
Pope John tweets in at UK Sports Network as a
coach or as a player, is it possible to teach
toughness or is it something someone's born with?

Speaker 15 (36:49):
Yeah, yes, the answer is yes, and yes it is
something that some some kids are are raised, born in
their DNA, all parts of that. And I think it's
also something that has to be learned to some degree
because because there's a lot a lot of parts of toughness.
You know, a lot of times we think of toughness.

Speaker 1 (37:10):
Is is.

Speaker 15 (37:12):
You know, the first thirty seconds of the of the
of the Hockey All Star Game, if anybody witnessed that.
That was in our film session this morning, where it
was guys just threw off the gloves and everyone was
in the penalty box in the first ninety seconds. Sometimes
we think of toughness as that, and certainly that's a
component of toughness. But for us, toughness is when the

(37:34):
whole world is burning around you, that you can still
be focused on the task at hand. Toughness to me
is an ability to be completely undistractable. Like you, there
is nothing that can distract you from the moment, whether
it's your own fears or concerns, or whether it's a
referees whistle, or whether it's something opposing team does, or

(37:55):
a mistake that you just made on the last play,
or or the crowd or the arena, or injuries or
anything else. To me, the greatest toughness is this ability
to focus, focus, no matter what distractions are out there,
and that is a learned skill, that is something we practice,
we talk about. It's something that you can be successful

(38:16):
at one day and then for some reason, not so
successful at the next.

Speaker 1 (38:20):
It's something that we need to keep growing.

Speaker 15 (38:22):
And I think as coaches, teachers, mentors, parents, educators, I
think it's something that we could teach our children and
our and our players and our students because it's an
unbelievable skill.

Speaker 3 (38:34):
You know.

Speaker 15 (38:34):
Sometimes you know, as an example, sometimes we spend all
of our time trying to take the bullies out of
a situation instead of making the people we care about
bully proof.

Speaker 1 (38:50):
And when we think.

Speaker 15 (38:51):
About toughness and undistractability, we're trying to make our team
in a sense, in the larger scheme of things, bully proof,
where it doesn't matter the bullies there are not because
they can't impact our guys'.

Speaker 3 (39:03):
Is that what you were referring to in a postgame
media session, we talked about being present.

Speaker 15 (39:07):
It's exactly about being present. You know, we had you know,
there were a couple of plays down the stretch that
I'm sure every member of BBN is like picked apart
where you're like, what are we doing? And we were
feeling the same thing. And for us, this is just
one of there's only really been two games this season

(39:29):
where we kind of just didn't function like us in
the winning moments of the game and and the baggage
just got to us. And so it's it's you know,
we know our guys, our guys care, our guys are competitors,
our guys are fighters, our guys want to win, And
so you look at the video like, how is it
possible this person didn't do this at this time? And

(39:52):
usually that's it's not a question of being engaged or
carrying or physically tough enough. It's it's a question of
like your your heads and you being thinking about something
that just happened, or thinking about what might happen, or
think about the consquences and not being locked in and
in the moment. It's a great skill that's a part
of championship teams. It's the DNAF. Toughness is something that
we're good at, that we're trying to get great at.

Speaker 1 (40:15):
They can tuck you any game.

to the Clark's pampashop phone line. Beth, you're next up
with coach Mark Pope.

Speaker 27 (42:52):
Hey, Beth, Hi, I thought it was awesome to see
Layla perform with the dance team and just wondered how
you felt about that, you and Leanne and if you.

Speaker 19 (43:02):
Got to watch it at all.

Speaker 28 (43:03):
I know it was a halftime, so I just wondered about.

Speaker 1 (43:05):
That, Beth.

Speaker 15 (43:08):
Yes, first of all, thank you for calling. And it
was awesome. So I didn't get to watch it during
the game because we were dealing with all the issues.
But after there was some point after met with the team,
right before print media that I get just a minute
with Leanne and so she showed me video and it

(43:30):
was just it was really special to me, just on
a selfish personal level, just it's super cool, like to
have my daughter on that court wearing whearing, wearing you know,
my jersey and and uh, you know, sharing that moment.
And and two of our other daughters were were with
us at the game, which we don't get to have

(43:51):
that many of us together that often right now because
the girls are all over the world kind of chasing
their own dreams. Uh, it was really special. And I thought,
I thought she crushed it myself.

Speaker 1 (44:01):
So and she dances for the Utah Jazz, Yes she does.

Speaker 15 (44:04):
And so it's interesting because she, you know, she's she's
on court. Maybe I don't know what it ends up
being fifteen nights a year with preseason games and everything else,
and so she does this so much. But I think
for her also, it was really really special. It you know,
sometimes the the NBA games blur together because there's so many,
and I think this was a high She would tell

(44:25):
you this was a highlight for her.

Speaker 1 (44:26):
Also.

Speaker 15 (44:27):
It was really wonderful and that the uh, the team
and the coaches were so welcoming and receptive and and
it was a great experience.

Speaker 3 (44:34):
And you probably worked with her on the routine did well.
She is she gives me no credit.

Speaker 15 (44:40):
Uh, and I deserve no credit for her for her
dancing acumen.

Speaker 3 (44:45):
Let's go to another call, mail your next up with
coach Pope.

Speaker 27 (44:49):
Hey mail, Hello, I'm so excited to be talking to
This is ridiculous, Hi, mel I have I have five
million faults, but I'm gonna try and narrow it down
to like something from Maybe it has had to change
a little bit in the last couple of games with
me Grews. But I think that your mind is amazing.

(45:11):
I feel like your brain is like fourteen Excel spreadsheets
all at one time, doing hyper analytical things. And I
often wonder sometimes if you forget, like to not forget,
but like, at what point do you check in with
like visus the numbers and the friends and just what
looks good for boughs one through five and this is

(45:33):
who we're competing bus Like when is the gut there?
Like sometimes do you just like trash the analytics and
go with a gut feeling about mutting the lineup and
what this and that sort of thing. I feel like
earlier on it was a lot more analytical. I feel
like the last maybe few games we've had to kind
of go with the get a little more with the

(45:54):
shake up in our personnel, and I will leave it
at that. Let's respond to that. So I am from Paqeville.
I am traveling through Patville at the moment, going to
Perry County to work tonight. They devastated areas out here,
lots of walf and thanks. I'll be be in for
what I know y'all are going to come through for
us and help us and everybody thoughts and prayers, and

(46:17):
I hope we get through this recovery effort sooner rather
than later. And I will let you.

Speaker 28 (46:22):
Get to it.

Speaker 1 (46:23):
Thank you. Mill Well.

Speaker 15 (46:24):
First, please travel safe. You know everything I'm here and
everything we're seeing is tough, tough travel down there, so
please please be safe. Yeah, and and and our prayers
go out to you and your family and everybody in
the community for sure, and we're hoping we've all worked
together to help as much as we can.

Speaker 1 (46:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 15 (46:43):
Uh, you know, I'm not sure if I have fourteen
spreadsheets going or my computer crashes a lot, both those
things probably happen in terms of the different in terms
of like gut instinct experience versus analytics, they're always there's
always a little bit of tension there. They're always kind
of playing against each other, and usually usually it comes

(47:10):
down to a little bit of a gut feel, a
little bit of leaning on experience, a little bit of
kind of having a sense of where a particular guy's
mind and spirit might be in that moment when I
say that, kind of what kind of energy they're bringing
to the game in that moment. And then in the
broad brushstrokes, we rely more on the analytics, if that

(47:31):
makes sense. You know, a lot of times the sample
size is so small during the course of a game
that the analytics get really hard. I'll give you an example.
Sometimes you have a player, you know, just to take
a very simple, simplistic example, sometimes you have a player
that's shooting eighteen percent from the three point line, and

(47:54):
so that works out to be, you know, fifty point
five to four points per possession, which is really abysmal,
and you're gonna win every game where you can get
your opponent to score point five to four points per possession.
That's what the numbers tell you. And so here's the
trick is, sometimes you'll have that player and they just
get on fire and they make three threes in a

(48:15):
row in that particular game. So at that point, what
do you do. Do you trust the numbers and trust
the law of averages that work out, or do you
respond to this person like having a game right now.
And once you start to take that very simple idea,
then you start to factor in fifty other variables that

(48:38):
could be happening in the game, Like what is going
to be the cost to your defensive scheme if you
change it right now and actually start you know, going
full deny or like dedicated to out of gaps being
on the catch, and what does that unleash from the
rest of someone's offense for example. All those things end
up there's so many numbers that you hope you've done

(49:00):
your homework and you hope that your gut actually takes
over that point based on all the information you have
to make good decisions, and you know, sometimes you're just
rolling the dice. I mean, that's just the truth about it.
But the thing is, you give yourself the best chance,
the most off if you have a good combination of
kind of going with experience and in stage and gut
and not ignoring the numbers.

Speaker 3 (49:22):
Mel thank you for the question. Let me give you

chrisp refreshing and ice. Gold is Coke zero sugar the
best coke ever? Try and decide.

Speaker 3 (53:00):
Welcome back into our final segment and if you have
a quick question, you can call us on the Clarks
pumping shop online or post a UK sports network. Let
me hit one off the social media feed from Jerry,
or could you see longer periods of zone defense against
drive and create type of teams.

Speaker 1 (53:19):
Yeah, I'm gonna get to that, Jerry. First of all,
let me hit this.

Speaker 15 (53:21):
Ukathletics dot Com slash flood Relief again. We got so
many people working on this that just in real time
over the course of this radio show, we updated the
website Ukathletics dot Com slash flood Relief if you get
a chance to go now, Jerry. In terms of extended zone,

(53:43):
so that is a place where I spend a lot
of time kind of trusting the numbers and then trusting
the lineups on the floor. One of the things about
zone is especially for us because it's not a mainstay of.

Speaker 1 (53:54):
What we do.

Speaker 15 (53:55):
It's a little bit of a disruptive defense. Try and
change the flow of the game. Try and do that,
but it leaves us really really susceptible, especially the teams
that are making shots. And so what happens is, in fact,
what happened in this Texas game was we went two
possessions of zone and then they made a substitution to

(54:16):
kind of change their lineup to respond to put another
elite shooter on the floor. We went out of it,
we went back to it, So it's a little bit
of it's a little bit of like we're gonna use
it as much as we feel like we can. I
think extended periods of zone gets really hard for us
in this league. It gets really really hard on the glass,

(54:37):
gets really really hard covering elite level shooters, gets really
really hard to stay in a zone versus teams that
are super aggressive in transition, which is most of this league,
And so that's why we're pretty selective about doing it's
been really effective. We might try and race into a
zone a few more possessions earlier in the game. We've

(55:01):
actually added a couple of different zone looks just to
just to try and spread a little bit more confusion
and chaos. So it's an important part of what we're doing.
It's gonna be important part through the rest of the season.
But those are some of the reasons why we haven't
got to a point yet where we sit in the.

Speaker 1 (55:15):
Zone for a long periods of time. Thank you, Jerry David.
You're next up on The Clark's Puppet Chuff Online Hey David, Okay,
thank you.

Speaker 28 (55:21):
Hey, hey Mark, this is a David from Louisville.

Speaker 1 (55:24):
Hey David, Yes.

Speaker 28 (55:27):
You there, yere Okay, hey Mark. The question I have is, uh,
it seems like Kobe Brea, it seems like the team
goes uh the way that he played. It seems like
the opposing team is always on him. They're holding and

(55:48):
he can't get get his seat set for a shot,
and he seems like he's brushing it all the all
the time when the defense it's so you know, it's
so aware where he's at. So I don't know if
he's needs that. We don't need to get more screen
for him or for something.

Speaker 1 (56:06):
I know.

Speaker 3 (56:07):
He just said, David, I'm gonna jump in here. We've
got a little list of two minutes. I'll let him
answer your question. Hey, David, really quickly.

Speaker 15 (56:15):
So interesting when you have really talented shooters like that,
using them as screeners is sometimes even more effective than
screening for them, and a lot of times it's the
combination of both. One of the things that's been complicated
is we've gone through this this this uh, this continuous
changing point guard is we've been fighting so hard to
simplify the way we play and have less play calling

(56:37):
because we're trying to, you know, relieve pressure.

Speaker 1 (56:40):
We don't have a guy that really.

Speaker 15 (56:41):
Kind of can just take on the whole thing by himself,
so we've ended up simplifying things trying to get into
actual specific play calling is a little bit unpredictable for
us right now because we don't even know how we're
gonna break the full court pressure. That's all a little
bit of a dynamic. But you're exactly on the right page.
And in terms of how much focus and attention he's getting, uh,

(57:03):
and he's done an incredible job compating that did not
have his best showing UH vers Texas, but he's been
playing great basketball. We expect him be terrific on Wednesday night.
I think he's gonna put on a show.

Speaker 3 (57:14):
And that will get us to UH. That'll be our
final call of the night, David, thank you for that.

Speaker 1 (57:20):
Again.

Speaker 3 (57:20):
