(05:39):
The UH Wildcats bouncing back from a tough day on
Saturday against an outstanding team. So what you learn in
the autopsy beyond what you saw in real time, well,
a couple of things. One, Auburn's a really good team.
They're really good, They're you know, they're there.
Speaker 13 (05:53):
Uh.
Speaker 14 (05:53):
Their their separation right now is pretty astronomical from the
rest of college basketball and what they've done. And just
in terms of Quad one wins, the numbers are just
really incredible. And Two, it was not it was not
a great night for us. We're a much better team
than that. And so both those things are true. And
I think the guys are are excited about moving on
to tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
And you face an LSU team tomorrow night for the
final home game of the season that has had some
ups and downs. They went to a four guard lineup yep,
but to what three weeks ago I guess, and immediately
won two games, scored above eighty in both games.
Speaker 14 (06:26):
Yeah, they're they're playing a little smaller, a little bit
more athletic, really really perimeterve oriented, some really really talented,
uh veteran guys and young guys.
Speaker 4 (06:36):
Uh. And they've they've been in every game.
Speaker 14 (06:39):
They just they haven't had quite the finishing results that
they want. But they're a good team and it's gonna
be a great It'll be a great game tomorrow night.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Former Wildcat Damian Collins. Yeah, respecting the rim, he's he's
been really good.
Speaker 14 (06:51):
He's a one point three points per possession on the role,
and he's got a lot of role possessions.
Speaker 15 (06:56):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (06:56):
He's doing an.
Speaker 14 (06:56):
Unbelievable job as a cutter, as an offensive rebounder, and.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
Clearly he's an elite level rent protector.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Again, go ahead and chump online with your questions at
UK Sports Network or on the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line.
Two games left before you get into March in the tournaments.
So what are you talking to your guys about?
Speaker 14 (07:18):
Well, we're just we're still in this pursuit to get
better and better and better. It's you know, it's it's nice.
Lamont is feeling better every day. Uh Ac is so
showing some real life even in even in the debacle Saturday, Uh,
you know, the last fifteen minutes he played really really well.
And so we feel like we're on the uptick for sure,
(07:38):
and that's where we want to be right now. These
are there's a huge game Tuesday, and then finish up
the regular season Saturday, and it's onto the SEC tournament
and and and then then a tournament. It's the best
time of year. It's it's like Christmas, and so we're
super excited to be here and and can't wait to
get to it.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
And the guys, a couple of guys did media session
today and they were talking about the team collectively wanting
to kind of dedicate the rest of the season to
the fallen comrade there Jackson Robinson.
Speaker 14 (08:07):
Yes, man, it's just it's one of the just one
of the the worst parts of basketball. Jackson has worked
so hard and and he's been such a huge part
of this team, and and it was playing so well. Yeah,
and in in the league was just having an unbelievable
SEC run.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
And it's clearly a huge part of what we do.
Speaker 14 (08:27):
And and you know, uh, got was recommended to him
man a month ago that he go have surgery, but
the doctor also gave him permission to take one last
swing at it, and and uh.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
It just couldn't work. And so.
Speaker 14 (08:45):
You know, it's killing him not to be out there
with the guys. It was funny, we're you know, it
says this could be our last practice in RUPT today.
It could be our last practice because we'll be.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
In the j c C.
Speaker 14 (08:56):
I might force, you know, force the doors of RUP
open a couple of times to prepare for the tournament.
But but this was our last scheduled practice and RUP.
And so the guys are going through their last practice
of Jackson over there on the side, and that's not
where he wants.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
To be at all.
Speaker 14 (09:09):
But he's, uh, he's he's done an unbelievable job. He's
he's the he's the assistant to the associate head coach.
Right now, he's demanding an increase in salary for all
the scout.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
Work that he's doing.
Speaker 14 (09:22):
And he's been great on the bench with our guys,
and and he is he just as he's especially even
being you know, I'll share a little bit about Jacks.
He'd probably be mad at me for this, but he
gets mad at me all the time, so I can
share it. So Jackson Robinson is a consummant team player.
He was so excited to go back to Oklahoma for
(09:42):
a bunch of reasons. One is because it was first
game back healthy. Uh too, he was really hoping that
this was gonna work, that he was going to get
through this wrist injury, and that it was going to
rehab and be okay, and he was making good progress
and and you know, it's his hometown and and so
all those he was so excited to get back and
came out firing away in the first ten minutes and
(10:05):
then went down and took a really hard fall, landed
right on his wrist, and it ended up being like
the end of his the end of his season and
his college career, and went into halftime, it was unbelievable
support of the guys, and then all during the second half,
during a really remarkable second half. I mean that was
it was a beautiful thing to watch in terms of
(10:26):
seeing our guys competitive spirit and ability to come back
and win that game. And Jacks was one hundred per
dialed in the whole time. And and and you only
recognize how hard that was from him because we went
back in the locker room everybody's celebrating like crazy celebration breaks,
and then Jack just burst out into tears, like inconsolable tears.
(10:48):
And what's really special about him and about this team
is Jack's Jack's really in his heart of hearts new
the second he went down and really couldn't. He tried
to go back in the game and just couldn't, couldn't
really move this risk and couldn't catch the ball and
couldn't do anything in the pain was pretty excruciating, and
and so he knew before halftime. But it's just like
(11:09):
he wasn't gonna indulge in feeling sorry for himself or
sad at all. He was gonna be totally focused on
this team for the next hour, through this incredibly emotional
comeback where we needed every ounce of energy that everybody had.
And then you just saw it come spilling out of
him after and and he's just man, he's a he's
a really special human being. And when when I'm telling you,
(11:30):
when when God puts little detours like this in your life,
there's a reason. A lot of times we don't know
the reason for a while, but I'm sure that's gonna
it's gonna grow him into something even more than he
ever could have imagined.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
He's one of the guys that will participate in Senior
Night tomorrow. You went through one of those, So what's
it like? For what will you tell your guys about
what it's like?
Speaker 14 (11:50):
I don't really have a lot of speeches for him.
We're actually having a dinner tonight with just the seniors
and their and their families. And it's really not the seniors.
We have so many different guys. These are the guys,
this group of guys that will walk out tomorrow. The
way that they're defined is they're they're the guys who
have exhausted every bit of their eligibility and so that's
(12:10):
changing all the time. Like we walked into the season
thinking Kerr was going to be exhausted his eligibility this year,
but he didn't. He's got another year left, which is
so fantastic for all of us, right, and so you know,
it's it's just for the guys that have zero college
eligibility left.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
It's just those.
Speaker 14 (12:28):
Six guys and it'll be really special for them being
out there tonight.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
It was fun.
Speaker 14 (12:34):
We finished practice today and the guys always stay after
practice and shoot, we have guys that are gym rats
and so guys that stand up to shoot, and I.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
Usually sit and talk with a couple of guys individually.
Speaker 14 (12:44):
And so I finished, and I was getting up to leave,
and then I had all my seniors, all these seniors,
all these guys with exhausted eligibility, We're sitting on the baseline.
So I walked over and they were just sitting back
talking to Black Coach. We're just taking it in because
we know this is it like this, this is our last,
you know, maybe our last official practice in here because
for the TERNA we'll go to the JCC and.
Speaker 4 (13:08):
It means a lot.
Speaker 14 (13:09):
They get it and they've done incredible things this year
and we have so much left in the tank to
accomplish down the stretcher.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
Thanks to Olivia. By the way, that was our Alumni
Hall question of the Week about the seniors, and you
can post question each week tag at Alumni Hall on
it and you could win a twenty five dollars gift
card from Alumni Hall. We'll be right back on the

Welcome back into the UK Healthcare Mark Pope Show ahead
of the Cats matchup with the LSU Tigers tomorrow night
at seven Eastern time. Pregame coverage, we'll start with the
Jack Burford Chevrolet Countdown to tip Off Show with Dave
Baker and Cameron Mills, and it's going at five point
thirty Eastern right here in these UK Sports networkstations. Let's
get to the first question for Coach Pope. It comes
(17:03):
from Dayton and Curtis. Is that Dayton, Ohio or Dayton, Kentucky.
Speaker 22 (17:08):
Yeah, Dayton, Ohio, Thanks for having me. Coach just wanted
to first off start by saying thanks for bringing the
excitement back to Kentucky basketball. I've been to almost every
home game this year and a few other games and
you can just tell the excitements here. So thank you
for doing that. Your your energy and positivity's has been great.
My first question is kind of can you explain more
(17:30):
what your plans are with the rotation without Jackson? Now
nothing to you know, all the guys off the bench
have been great and whatnot, but you know they struggled
a little bit with some of the athleticism and whatnot
against Auburn and really, you know, didn't produce so much.
Do you plan on maybe tighten the rotation a little
bit going forward? And then if you don't mind, the
second question would be kind of what do you think
you should target kind of for next year to help
(17:53):
build a roster again. I know we might be getting
a little head of ourselves, but you know, I'm kind
of pushing on the athleticism and I noticed sometimes we
can be a little bit overwhelmed with the current roster,
and you know, we're just anxious as cash fans. It's
been a while since we've been to the final four,
you know, as yourself as a fan, and I'm just
ditching to get back there.
Speaker 13 (18:09):
Man.
Speaker 22 (18:09):
I think you're the right guy and just curious to
see what you have to say.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
Thanks, Curtis, Curtis, good stuff.
Speaker 14 (18:14):
So first, with the rotation, Uh, it's it's interesting because
our whole our whole team is built on this idea
of coming in waves and having unbelievable pace to the game.
So much of what we do offensively and defensively is
is based on the energy that we have on the court.
And we're also you know, we're also limited by some
(18:38):
bodies and some health right now, we have been for
the last six weeks and it's kind of been a
little bit of a revolving door, and so there's a
balance really in in all honesty, Uh, I probably heard
our team's performance a little bit against Auburn by being
too tight with the rotation, because what we end up
with is we end up with uh, you know, fatigue,
(19:01):
bodies out there, and it's hard to play the way
we play.
Speaker 4 (19:06):
When when you when you have fatigue.
Speaker 14 (19:07):
And that's just a normal place to be, right it's
And so I probably played a Mari a few minutes
too long and he ends up with a high turnover number,
probably with Lamont just working himself back into playing in
game playing shape probably played him a minute too long
and a few minutes too long, and that's probably part
(19:28):
of the reason why why he was a much higher
turnover number than he traditionally has.
Speaker 4 (19:33):
And and you.
Speaker 14 (19:35):
Know, Kobe Bray had played thirty seven minutes and that's
just too that's too much to ask with everything we're
asking him to do.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
It would be different if.
Speaker 14 (19:41):
We played a more conservative, walk the ball up the
floor style.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
Of play, but we don't.
Speaker 14 (19:46):
It would be different if we had a dominating set
of point guards that were just getting downhill and Kobe
was functioning as a space player, but he's not. Like
our Our offense requires guys to be cutting an inconstant
motion all the time, and so us having fresh bodies
on the floor is really really important. So that's gonna
be the tension. There's not an exact answer. We need
(20:07):
to keep this rotation a little bit expansive. We need
to keep our most talented experienced players on the floor,
and finding the right exact balance is probably gonna vary
a little bit from game to game, but that's what
we're that's what we're facing right now, especially with Jack's out.
You know, that's a you know, that's another thirty minutes
that we have to kind of find how to position
exactly right.
Speaker 4 (20:28):
And and we can't.
Speaker 14 (20:30):
Uh, you know, these young players are going to continue
to play better and better and better, and our veterans
are getting a little healthier and and and getting back
into some playing shape in some in some cases, and
so we're gonna have a good balance there in terms
of the roster and the future.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
We have some really really important pieces that we're.
Speaker 14 (20:47):
Excited to have back next year and kind of a
foundation of guys that know what we do, how we
do it, what we do in the locker room, what
we do it, shoot around, you know, what our daily
kids is like. And we have three incredibly talented rookie
coming in so far and and and we'll see how
that high school recruiting finishes up, and then will be
really really aggressive in the porld at a couple of
(21:09):
positions to bring in a couple of superstars. And and
that's the balance we're looking for to have some guys
that have staying powered there are gonna be here multiple years,
and a couple of really talented freshmen and a couple
of really talented veterans that come in and understand what
Kentucky's all about, and probably all three of those prongs
are really important to put together a great roster.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
Coming up on another break, we'll remind you that after
we're done here with the UK Healthcare, Mark Pope Show,

Yeah, it's my lucky lucky two weeks. I talked to
you last week then too last week last Monday. Thanks
for taking my call. I've been noticing something. It's college basketball.
Thank for instance Albury and I know we've got a
good team, but you think college basketball is getting older?
(24:51):
Where you have transfers is all you're going to have
mostly on every team.
Speaker 4 (24:59):
Wayne.
Speaker 24 (25:00):
Uh okay, thank you, Wayne.
Speaker 4 (25:03):
Yep.
Speaker 14 (25:04):
And I think everybody is is is wondering the same things, Wayne.
So I'll tell you. I think it's got to be.
I think it's got to be. I think it's got
to be. Uh, a varied roster. I think, really you
want to hit those three places. I think you want
you know, if you look at it, uh there there's
only really one team that's having tremendous success as a
(25:25):
young roster right now, and that's Duke. Duke has a
Duke has a couple of starters, two or three going
back and forth that are freshmen, and then they have
they're surrounded by a bunch of really really veteran players,
including transfer a bunch of transfer portal players that have
been playing for a long time. It just as it is.
You know, you're a coach. Patino actually recently in Saint
(25:46):
John say, I'm not recruiting any freshmen. Yeah, you have
to be old to win. I actually don't believe that.
I think that you can bring in the right young
players and and grow them. I think you can bring
in there's a chance you can bring in a you know,
a player that's gonna be a one and done player
that's going to be a superstar, that's going to be
(26:07):
a staple of your team. Surround him by a couple
other really really talented young players that are gonna be
important pieces of a team. Put them with some some
returning players that know the program and understand how it functions,
and and that allows you to build a culture from
the inside with those guys, and then add a couple
(26:28):
elite level talents from the portal. I think I think
putting all those three three things together is probably the
winning formula. I think there's a place for all three
of those kind of recruiting areas, and those are three
areas will attack.
Speaker 2 (26:42):
Thank you Wayne for the question. To the social media feed,
David Wright said UK Sports Network, it looked like Trent
was injured before halftime and on Saturday, what's his status
is He could to go?
Speaker 14 (26:53):
Yeah, I was worried there was an ankle, but he
got kicked in the calf and so once I heard that,
I was like, Oh, he's gonna be fine. But Trent's
been been playing really hard. He's he's uh, he's been
competing so hard. We're putting him way out of position
right now. You know, we were at Alabama and I
don't know what it was, six minutes, seven minutes, just
because of roster issues and changes. You know, I had
(27:16):
him guarding Mark Shears, who's the the you know, the
presumptive returning SEC player of the year ish category and
one of the elite level point guards in the country.
And we joked about this, I think on the show
a couple of weeks ago. But you know, had I known,
I'd never in a million years would have guessed that
I would attestd Trent No with doing that. But it's
(27:36):
just a tribute to him and how hard he's been working,
and he's got a great future.
Speaker 4 (27:40):
But he's he's fine, he's healthy.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
He seems to have a nose for finding his way
to rebounds.
Speaker 4 (27:44):
Yeah, he was terrific on the offensive glass.
Speaker 14 (27:46):
Gave us some life on the offensive glass in the
first half of Auburn game.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
Let's go back to the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line,
Marty in Georgetown.
Speaker 25 (27:54):
What do you have, yester, coach? I just wanted to
ask you, have you ever heard of a doctor here
in Lexington named doctor Greg Pits p I T T S.
Speaker 14 (28:10):
I'm nervous about answering this question because if I say yes,
maybe I get in trouble.
Speaker 4 (28:14):
And if I say no, I don't. I don't.
Speaker 14 (28:17):
But can you can you give me some background on
why you telling paranoid right now?
Speaker 25 (28:22):
He has a lot in common with He has a
lot in common with you in particular, and.
Speaker 4 (28:29):
He is stunningly.
Speaker 25 (28:31):
Therapist in the United on this side of the Mississippi,
I have full use of my left hand strictly due
to Greg Pitts. He is the fast Eddie Jamil and therapy.
Would you say played on the Championship like you?
Speaker 4 (28:52):
Yeah?
Speaker 25 (28:53):
He played like Eddie, has kids to go to Lexington,
Catholic like you. He's the father of five girls and
one boy.
Speaker 4 (29:03):
Wow, how about that? I would like to meet him.
Speaker 25 (29:07):
Because he trusts me. He is the phenomenon.
Speaker 14 (29:12):
Well we sound like we sound like we have a
lot of common, except he didn't drop out of medical school,
so he's stayed with you. He's got one up on
me there for sure.
Speaker 4 (29:22):
Party, Thank you.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
I've got to about a minute here before the next break,
So rather than take a call, let me ask you
to relate a story that you I think we're telling.
Jess Simps about for the TV broadcast to shoot around
on or a practice on Friday. About the mom and
her two sons that you met when you went back
out to interact with the fans after the win in Oklahoma.
Speaker 14 (29:43):
Yeah, BBN, I just I'm telling you what, it's the
greatest honor to coach here and play here. It's the
greatest honor ever. It just as it's just as incredible,
and we have a lot of opportunities where we get
to interact with with you know, this community, and it's
really brilliant and one of the places we had to
on the road, and.
Speaker 4 (30:01):
It is without fail.
Speaker 14 (30:03):
You know, sometimes there's a million things going on after
a game, and so you know, so sometimes it takes
a while to get back out to talk to to
talk to BBN after games, but without fail, every time
I do, I leave so inspired. And so we were
at Oklahoma just after that thrilling win, and I'm there
(30:26):
was kind of a line of people that I was
greeting afterwards, and I came up to this mom and
she was just full of life, just fantastic, and her
two sons, eight and ten, and it was just I
think it was just the three of them there and
then they had driven sixteen hours NonStop. Hopefully it was
just the mom driving, and hopefully the kids weren't driving,
(30:47):
but they had driven sixteen hours to get there, and
the two boys couldn't have been more excited and happy
and and the mom and and then they were gonna,
you know, it was a late game, so they were
gonna get to bed late that night and get up
first thing in the morning and drive sixteen hours back.
And I just was, you know, it's just I have
I have like countless moments like this is I get
(31:09):
to meet the like our basketball community. And I just
looked at those two kids. I actually said it out
loud to them, like, boys, you don't understand in like
twenty years, this is gonna be one of the greatest
memories of your entire life because your mom threw you
in the car and drove sixteen hours with you to
(31:31):
come to a game which is gonna be the least
relevant part of the story. And then you drove sixteen
hours back and it just is like it just is
inspiring to it's just inspiring to to just meet these families.
It just it just left me shake my head. I
also met I wish I wish I had got their names,
I would I would totally tell on them. But I
met two gentlemen. I'm gonna say they were sixty five.
(31:54):
Please don't be mad, guys, if you're younger than that,
I'm gonna say they were sixty five.
Speaker 4 (31:59):
And they were just.
Speaker 14 (32:00):
Two guys, and they were all decked out of their
Kentucky gear. And so I got to them and they said, hey,
we we went to Alabama also, so they'd been on
the road all week. They drove to Alabama and then
they drove to Oklahoma, and they were fantastic, by the way.
I talked to for a couple of minutes and they
were so delightful and and so they were like, first
of all, thank you so much for pulling out the wind,
(32:22):
because if we went ohing to there's no way our
wives were ever gonna let us make this road trip again.
And then they were like, can you please take a
picture with us so that we can prove we were
actually here so they'll believe us. And it's just like,
come on, there's no there's no basketball community like this
in the world, and and it's just a it's such
a it is such an incredible honor to have a
(32:44):
chance to coach here and our guys feel it too,
Like my guys sitting in rep after practice was over,
just kind of like, you know, they spent so much
time there and blood, sweat and tears and all the
emotion in there and and all the hopes and dreams
and all of it's kind of accumulated to where we
are now. We're having chance to go do this in
the postseason and then all the interaction they have this
(33:04):
emotional relationship with with BBN and and they're just sitting back.
It was really fun to just kind of see them
just like breathe it in, you know, in some sense,
in a practice sense, for the last time.
Speaker 4 (33:16):
And it's pretty special.

Speaker 4 (37:12):
Jeff.
Speaker 13 (37:14):
Hey, coach Hope. So happy to have you home and
thanks for bringing back the excitement to our to our
school and our team. My first question would be what
are we doing to you know, our passing seems really lackademical.
There's no Chris, no follow through with it. And also
we're watching a lot of layups when we could be
(37:35):
defending at the rim.
Speaker 14 (37:38):
Thank you for the question, Jeff, Jeff, Yes, that's caused
me an immense amount of anguish and pain. Uh it's so,
I'll tell you what's interesting. So we talk about us
all the time, but we're we are a decision making program.
So what we do is is is we coach decisions,
(37:58):
We coach actions, visions as we go and and it's
it's interesting, like we we we we had a couple
inexplicable runs in the game against Auburn, especially early in
the second half. We turned it over three out of
five possessions, and they were uncontested turnovers. They were they
were distracted turnovers. And that's actually the truth. It's not
(38:20):
it's not about the guys not knowing the technique. It's
not about the guys being cable, and it's definitely not
about the guys caring. It's about getting to a place
where it feels like everything is so sped up and
and you're thinking about a thousand different things instead of
being able to get yourself kind of dialed into the moment,
(38:41):
and that's when you have things like that happen. It's
it's not about it's about discipline, but it's about the
discipline of being able to center yourself. It's interesting. I'm
a I'm a I'm a non athlete. I've been a
non athlete for like the last ten years. I was
never really an athlete, but now I'm really a non athlete.
So so the only time I ever really sweat is
(39:02):
I get on the peloton early in the morning. And
for the last couple mornings, I've been watching the while
I ride, since you really can't call it a workout
if you're watching television. But I'm watching this documentary on
the USA Dream Team, the most recent Olympic team. And
what was super cool is we all remember Steph Curry
(39:22):
had this incredible, incredible game in the gold medal game
where he came back and made plays and they have
him talking, so they show some highlights of the game
and have him talked and show some highlights like we
see all the time, and that's what he was talking about.
He's like talking about how what an important skill. It
is something that sets him apart with his ability to
take in all the emotion and then be present. And
(39:44):
the reason he's able to execute is because he brings
himself being back president in the moment. It's something our
team has been great at. Actually this year, we've had
incredible second half comebacks where we've we've been really present,
but we just we were unable to do that, able
to bring ourselves back to the moment get rid of
the baggage in the second half on Saturday, And I
(40:05):
was certainly disappointing, but it was one day and we
got high hopes that that day, as painful as was,
is going to pay dividends for us.
Speaker 2 (40:12):
Here as we go down the stretch from Bradley at
UK Sports Network, defenses are smothering you at the out
on the perimeter. What adjustments can be made to get
more uncontested threes?
Speaker 14 (40:24):
It's a good okay, So again this goes back to
an earlier question kind of the tension we're going to
live in about about playing more bodies on the floor
to get more pace and thrust in transition, or playing
less guys and having to settle for less pace and
less transition and more suffocating defense. And I probably aired
a little bit too far on Saturday. All things considered,
(40:46):
there's also one hundred other dynamics about tightening the rotation
a little bit too much for a little too long
in the game because we didn't have a ton of thrust.
The only times where we really looked functional in the
game on Saturday was when we had actually some pace.
When we incorporate the pace both in the full court
and the half court, and we got to stay fresh
(41:06):
enough to do that, and so that's gonna require a
little both those. When we have some thrust, some pace
in the full court, that's when the game gets a
little bit more open. That's where we kind of break
things apart, and that's when we really find space to
earn each other great shots from beyond the three point line.
When the game gets stuck in a half court game,
(41:27):
it's more difficult for us. With the complexion of our
team right now, it's more difficult for us to find
open shots.
Speaker 2 (41:33):

(44:33):
to the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line and John and Louisville,
what do you have for Coach Pope?
Speaker 29 (44:40):
Hey, John, Hey, coach Glad. It's tough to you first time.
Speaker 4 (44:45):
Thanks John, Hey.
Speaker 29 (44:48):
I love the action we're playing the offense. You know,
it's really your breath, fresh air. I was wondering if
you have any action out of that to maybe pen
that seven foot two, fifty two pound guy in the
block and pin his man underneath the net and just
say sorry about your love, big boy. Do you have
(45:08):
anything like that other than him having to buck the
guy down?
Speaker 14 (45:12):
Yeah, Yeah, that's great. That's a first of all. I
love the description. It's perfect. Yes, the answer, the answer
is yes and yes and and it's been good for us,
you know.
Speaker 4 (45:23):
It's actually a relatively.
Speaker 14 (45:25):
New vibe of like a five out field offense is
taken away. So it's kind of like everyone felt five out.
If you think about five out offense, it's really interesting
because there's so much space at the rim. But what
you lose is you lose gap penetration space. So if
you just think about five positions better as much as
they can around the perimeter, you really don't have any
(45:47):
double gaps. Okay, And so like text winner, who was
the inventor of the triangle offense. If you're old enough
to remember Michael Jordan the Chicago Bulls or even before that,
you know flavor of a Princeton offense. The triangle offense
was elite because you could choreograph not just a single gaps,
but sometimes double gaps and triple gaps where you could
(46:07):
penetrate where there was no help even on that whole
side of the court. Right and you kind of have
to manipulate it out of movement. So there's great opportunities
for penetration, but there's a lot of bodies at the rim.
And so one of the things that's happened now, especially
with the whistle the way it's been called it's becoming
increasingly common in the SEC is is that you're using
your five men as a duck guy to take away
(46:30):
the bottom rotation. So actually, most so in a normal
you know, defensive shell drill, you're used to having a
bottom or a you know, a nail guy or a
rim guy who kind of rotate rotates out outside the
lane to meet baseline penetration in a protectmental type defensive scheme.
(46:50):
And so what's happening now is teams are ducking that
big in and so he actually can't make rotation. So
the only guy that can make rotation would be like
a secondary rotator, which is as possible. So when you
talk about Amari and BG specifically having a present side,
Andrew Carr actually had a great duck play against Auburn
where he cleared out some space for Lamont Butler to
(47:12):
get to the rim. That's actually a part of it also,
and so we're working probably Andrew in the post a
little bit more than we're working on Mari to get catches,
but we do run a ton of actions to get
a Mario catches on the right block, probably more than
the left block, and he's been an elite level passer
for us.
Speaker 4 (47:30):
There.
Speaker 14 (47:31):
All those are different flavors. With all of that said,
when you look at efficiencies, post play is still one
of the least efficient offenses in the playbook right now.
In terms of what happens for a good team, it's
usually about a point nine points per possession. We're a
one one point one points per possession team, so it
still comes at a cost when you work that space.
(47:52):
So that's a long, convoluted answer, but it's a great question.
If we had a couple hours, I'd love to continue
expounding on it.
Speaker 4 (48:00):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (48:00):
John from Wildcats nine six one two at the UK
Sports Network. Please ask coaches thoughts on the clip of
the Auburn players with the belts after the game.
Speaker 4 (48:11):
I'm not sure what I'm allowed to say.
Speaker 14 (48:13):
I'm looking around like someone's gonna tell me what I'm
allowed to say.
Speaker 4 (48:17):
Right now, here's the deal. I think that you know.
Speaker 14 (48:25):
My only commentary on celebration is is here's the truth, okay,
and it just it hurts me to the bottom of
my heart. I know it hurts BBN. But Aubury came
in and they beat us and they got to celebrate,
and that's it. And if you don't want guys celebrating,
then then win the game. That's That's just as simple
as it is. So I don't like talking about it.
I don't like remembering it. I don't like seeing it
or saying it.
Speaker 4 (48:45):
But it's just the truth.
Speaker 14 (48:47):
And so so uh, you know, we didn't hold up
our our end of the bargain on Saturday, and so
you know, however.
Speaker 4 (48:53):
Players choose to celebrates how they choose to celebrate.
Speaker 2 (48:56):
And another question, this one from fritz Off email, with
guarding the pick and roll. What makes that such a
difficult action to guard?
Speaker 14 (49:05):
Well, it continues to get really you know, we keep
finding new little ways to make ball screens more interesting,
and so there's all kind of nuanced to it. You know,
there's a bunch of things that make it difficult. You know,
at the very base value is a pick and roll
(49:25):
is designed to force you to switch to get mismatches,
or it's designed to force you to bring two players
to the ball where you've earned yourself offensively a power play,
and now you get to play four on three on
the other on the other section of the court. Those
are really the two in a broad spectrum philosophically, those
are the two things that you get to choose from.
(49:45):
Am I gonna switch a ball screen and keep everybody
in front of me? But but I'm gonna have mismatches?
Now I'm gonna have a usually oftentimes a big guarding
a guard and a guard guarding a big Or am
I I'm going to bring a second defender to that
ball and lead and give them a power play. Now,
(50:06):
there's a thousand other variables to that, but the most
basic place that's kind of what a pick and roll
forces you to do. And and handoffs do uh you know,
in a in a more exotic way zooms do or
or uh Reddick's door or Rickey's Now is kind of
(50:27):
the new thing we're actually skipping a player to to
to get to a handoff. You know, all those actions
are designed to force you to make a decision. Are
you going to switch and deal with the mismatch issues
on the perimeter and the post or are you going
to bring a second defender and at a base value.
That's why pick and rolls there's such a such a
fascinating part of the game is because it forces the
defense to to make a choice.
Speaker 2 (50:47):

And let's get back to the Clark's Pump and Shop
phone line for a question for Coach Pope comes out
(54:25):
of North Carolina. Perry.
Speaker 22 (54:27):
What do you have, hi, Coach Pope.
Speaker 30 (54:31):
I've been watching UK basketball since nineteen sixty five when
I was a freshman, okay, and I've also been watching
the coach P's defense this year and it's an amazing
powerful defense and I wondered if you have considered taking
a page out of his high powered defense as you've
(54:55):
tried to come up with some solutions for our defense
this year.
Speaker 14 (54:59):
Thank you, Perry, Yeah, Perry, great question. Yes, what coach
is doing at Saint John's. It's pretty awesome to watch.
He's doing it his way. He got his own juice
and his own flare too, and it's pretty exciting he
and he's he's getting an incredible product out of it
that I think would be the envy of just about everybody.
And there are some principles that we have in commons,
(55:20):
principles that are much different. Some of them are based
on personnel, physical abilities and kind of player characteristics of
how of how the groups are met, but it's sure
it's fun to watch them.
Speaker 4 (55:33):
And and Uh, you know, I think I think.
Speaker 14 (55:36):
Everybody would would love to steal a page or two
out of coaches book defensively.
Speaker 4 (55:39):
Right now, Perry, thank you for the question.
Speaker 2 (55:41):
We had a question from a member of the audience
here asking about what could be done to shorten or
eliminate preferably, I think that all the reviews that take
place during a game, you guys get together as coaches
after the season. I guess those things happened to the
Final four. Maybe is there any suggestions you have for
improving it? Yes, I think I think perhaps giving us
(56:04):
some thought, I think I think it would be really
helpful for college basketball. Actually, it's probably not going to
be super exciting for the coaches. But right now we're
taking the onus and all the burden is on the
referees and and and that's why we have a million reviews.
Speaker 14 (56:23):
We have a million reviews. It's you know, Jay Billis
uh says this every time we sit and talk. He's
it's like, I don't understand. We can go thirty eight
minutes without a review and the game is fine. In
the last two minutes, we have to have seventy two
different reviews. My my, You know, people don't really love
my opinions, even though I think they're all correct. You know,
(56:43):
I'm still on I'm still on my horse about pushing
for forty games. I'll continue beating that drum for a while.
But I think in terms of these these reviews, I
wish that we could I wish we could have one.
Speaker 4 (56:56):
I wish this is what I want.
Speaker 14 (56:57):
I want coaches to be able to have one opportunity
for of you, because this is what that does. It
takes the onus off the officials, and it says did
the coach use his review already? If he did, was
it accurate, does he get it back or did he
lose it? And it puts the pressure on the coaches
to have some discretion about when they resview, and it
frees up the referees where they don't have to double
check themselves and cover themselves all the time. And I
(57:21):
want to have a flag. I want to be able
to have a flag in my belt that I can
throw out on the floor, and I wanted to That's
what I'm looking for. I'd like to be right now
we have to leave, but I would like to before
we leave tomorrow is the voice of the Cats. Tom
leads his birthday. I would love today, it's today. I
love to wish you a happy birthday. Thank you very
(57:43):
happy birthday.
Speaker 2 (57:43):
