What's the best thing about a Skyline three way? Gotta
be that.

Speaker 13 (04:33):
Secret Recipe's chili, right, I mean, there's nothing else on
the planet that had that skyline taste. But it's not
a three way without those noodles. And then there's the
cheese man, that super fresh shredded cheddar cheese. You can
only get a skyline.

Speaker 4 (04:47):
What am I thinking? It takes all free to make

It's Kentucky and Louisville, a twelve noon Eastern time kickoff,
and coach Stoops announced today that true freshman Cutter Bowllie

(05:43):
from Lexington Christian Academy will be the starting quarterback for
the Wildcats. He'll make his first start after playing the
second half of second halves of the last two games.
Cut her through four one hundred and sixty yards in
the second half against Texas, and that enabled Kentucky as

(06:03):
a whole to produce two hundred and eleven yards through
the air, which is the most of the season the
Texas has given up, so one hundred and sixty of
those coming via the right arm of Cutter Bowling. And
the way that he played, the poise that he showed
is I'm sure part of the reason he's getting the
start this week for the Wildcats. So it's certainly going

(06:24):
to be an exciting moment for him. As far as
can tell, did a little research today with the help
of UK Sports Information, we can't find another true freshman
that has started at quarterback for Kentucky in the Governor's
Cup rivalry that was revived in nineteen ninety four. Can't
find a true freshman anywhere along the way, and for

(06:46):
a long time that game was either the opening game
of the season or a little later, occasionally the third
game of the season. And so now at the end
of the season there's chance more of a chance for
a true freshman to be the starter. So this may
be the first one in the Overtor's Cup series, at
least since it was revived in ninety four, to start
as a true freshman at quarterback for Kentucky. The last

(07:07):
true freshman to start a game at quarterback for Kentucky
is Deston Wade in the twenty twenty two Music City
Bowl after Will Levis opted out of playing in the
Bowl game to prepare for the draft. Before that, you
have to go back to Randall Cobb in two thousand
and eight to find the last time that Kentucky football

(07:30):
team started a true freshman at quarterback, and Randall made
his debut on the road, and Deston Wade was down
in Nashville for the Music City Bowl. So the last
we'll have to go deeper on this to find you
the last time a true freshman made his first start
at quarterback in front of the home crowd, and we'll

(07:53):
have to go back even further to find that one.
So a little trivia nuggets to pursue on this one.
We're stretching just little bit here because coach Stoops is
on his ways actually finishing up a call with a prospect,
we're told, and it's that time of year where you're
not only preparing for games, but preparing for signing date,
which is next week, and then obviously the transfer portals

(08:15):
in the mix as well, So we'll catch up to
Coach Stoops here shortly. Let me remind you to come
join the fun at the Kroger tailgate tent prior to
each home football game this season. They have games, food, drinks, music,
and more. The tent is at the corner of Cooper
and Sports Center Drive and it opens two hours prior
to kickoff. Your ticket to entry as a Kroger received
dated within seven days of the event, totally thirty five

(08:38):
dollars or more per person, and I was just about
to toss it to a break, Taya, let me go
ahead and do that we'll knock that out and we'll
come back. Coach Stops is here, We'll bring him in
when we come right back from the break. On the
UK Sports Network.

you said, there's so.

Speaker 5 (12:19):
Much going on, A lot going on.

Speaker 23 (12:20):
I apologize to the listeners. They've never been five minutes
late to this show. But I know you can talk
very well.

Speaker 7 (12:28):
I said, thank you for Mitch for announcing Cutter as
your starter, because that gave me some nuggets to talk
because you were and you know, I could get into
the recruiting thing, but you were busy prospect and that's
pretty important.

Speaker 5 (12:42):
Yeah, I was.

Speaker 23 (12:42):
I was on a call and you know, honestly, I've
made it about thirty minutes ago and thought it was
going to be a five to ten minute commitment. We
had already been you know, in discussions this week and
I thought it was going to be a quick call
and turned into a longer call. But so it's all good.
We'll keep on grind in a way.

Speaker 7 (13:01):
Good deal. Well, let's, as we always do, start with
just you when you do your news conference at midday.
You haven't talked to the team yet and haven't gone
through the first practice of the week. So how did
all of that go?

Speaker 5 (13:12):
Yeah, everything went good.

Speaker 23 (13:13):
The guys, you know, obviously disappointed in the result, but
you know, I felt like our guys played really hard again,
did some good things. That's a very good football team,
you know, and we needed to play very clean, very
good and did that in spurts, but not not good enough.
So you know, credit Texas. They have a very complete team,

(13:34):
and I have a lot of respect in No Sark
for a long time, and I think a lot of him. So,
you know, didn't get it done, but it was easy
to flip the script and move on, you know, with
a big rivalry game coming up here this week.

Speaker 7 (13:48):
There were several elements of that game that I'm sure
just built into the frustration that you've kind of dealt
with from week to week. And you talked about your
team did not lack fight, but they just didn't have
the consistency the execution.

Speaker 23 (14:00):
It takes exactly and and you know, that's a deep
football team. It's a very good team. They're complete, you know,
I think it's it's you know, there's really not a
lot of weaknesses on that team. You know, they could
put pressure on you up front. They got great linebackers,
they could run, and they really cover you up well,
you know, so you know, frustrating day. Offensively, they have
a lot to do with that, and they've been doing

(14:22):
that to a lot of people this year.

Speaker 5 (14:24):
You know.

Speaker 23 (14:25):
Defensively, I think we we we you know, played really
tough in spurts. You know, I thought we had the ball,
you know, caused you know, the ball to be on
the ground a lot. We have one for a touchdown,
you know, you know, several other opportunities, caused some fumbles,
you know, and had had our chances and uh, you
know they've played hard, but you know, it's a team

(14:45):
that makes you take a few shots, take some chances,
and you know a couple of times they split us
in some runs when we had some pressures coming. And
uh again that you know, you credit them. They they
did a nice job of picking up a lot of things.

Speaker 7 (15:00):
You down's today that true freshman Cutter Bowley will make
his first start this Saturday against Louisville. He played the
second half of the Murray State game, second half of
the Texas game, and obviously that's a higher level of opponents.
So what is it that you saw that you liked
out of Cutter's performance.

Speaker 23 (15:18):
I just thought he'd made you know, quick decisions. You know,
he you know, hit open receivers. He you know, the
operation was relatively clean. You know, he had some pressures,
some sacks, but he was in a difficult situation when
you're down, you know, several touchdowns in you know, on
the road against Texas, you're gonna put yourself in a
bad spot. We've talked about it all year. Predictable pass

(15:40):
is not a great, great place to live for us
right now. But you know, he really managed it, you know,
very well.

Speaker 5 (15:46):
I thought.

Speaker 23 (15:47):
You know, one of the other impressive plays was the
one that was called back. You know, he gets a
full complete blitz, backs up, you know, delivers a you know,
a nice pass to Jimori and you know, and and
you know, we get called back on the hold.

Speaker 5 (16:02):
But he did.

Speaker 23 (16:03):
You know, he just operated at a at a pretty
high level for a young guy.

Speaker 7 (16:06):
Really nice throw to Willie Rodriguez too. Another play where.

Speaker 23 (16:10):
He's scrambled out of the pocket, yeah, you know, and
he showed a lot of poise even the second play
backed up, you know, after a sack on his first
play backed up, he hits the you know, Barry on
and you know, and he made the right decision. He
was open, you know, and so to hit him in
stride was a you know, big play for us as well.

Speaker 7 (16:26):
You know, maybe maybe that's a good thing to kind
of talk a little bit about, because here's a guy
who is you know, he's thrown into the fire down
at Florida at the the end of that game, and
you said, you know, he he threw pick six on
his first throw, but you said that wouldn't bother him.
And it's clearly that it looks like it's the case
because he comes out there to start the second half

(16:46):
and just the worst possible thing you would hope is
in your situation is your he gets up there and
gets sacked. So now he's behind the chains, and what
does he do? Stands in, makes the right read, throws
the ball right on the money to bury on and
that was the start of getting on Texas's side of
the fifty on every drive that he quarterbacked in the
second half.

Speaker 5 (17:05):
Yeah, he did.

Speaker 23 (17:06):
He made you know, he made good decisions, and you
know it'd be nice to, you know, give him the
start and see what he does from the opening possession.
He's He's started the second half well in both games
that he played in, so hopefully we'll put together a
complete game.

Speaker 7 (17:22):
Saturday is a big day obviously for Cutter and his family,
but it's a big day for the guys who will
be playing and in Kroger Field for the last time
and his senior day. As we were Jeff and I
were walking from one end of the field to the
other to come to your locker room after the game Saturday,
walk past this Texas player sitting there on the field

(17:46):
and it was a helm. They're great tight end. Yeah,
and a senior is having a fantastic year and he
was just sitting there soaking it in for one last time.

Speaker 5 (17:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 23 (17:54):
Yeah, you know that. We have quite a few seniors.
You know, some of them went through maybe a year
ago and decided to come back, and others will be
walking for the first time.

Speaker 5 (18:04):
But you know, so many guys that I just.

Speaker 23 (18:08):
Greatly appreciate, you know, extremely you know, difficult year for us,
you know felt, you know, didn't meet the expectations. None
of us are happy with that. But but all of
them are are pushing and grinding all the way through.
They're showing great leadership and uh, you know, we're certainly
going to miss him.

Speaker 7 (18:25):
Guys that have been here for the whole run, like
Eli Cotts. Yeah, guy like John Dumas Johnson who played
a fantastic game on Saturday, battled leading tackler and also
had a fumbal recovery touchdown.

Speaker 5 (18:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (18:38):
So he's been a lot in one year.

Speaker 23 (18:39):
Yeah, he's he's one year. But you know, come in
that's just the nature of it now. But the guy
like Eli is a guy I lean on a lot
because he you know, he's been here for for a
long time.

Speaker 5 (18:51):
He's very mature. You know, he and I have.

Speaker 23 (18:54):
Good discussions, and actually he said a few words to
the team today after I addressed him. And you know,
he's certainly one of those guys kind of the anchor
there at the offensive line.

Speaker 5 (19:03):
You're certainly going to miss him.

Speaker 7 (19:05):
Yeah, He's probably gonna be something that's increasingly gonna rare
these days, a guy who starts and finishes at the
same place.

Speaker 5 (19:12):
Yeah, that's very true.

Speaker 7 (19:14):
What about the Louisville team that you play. What's the
early scouting report of the Cardinals?

Speaker 5 (19:18):
Yeah, just a good team.

Speaker 23 (19:19):
You know, I think Jeff and Brian Brawn, both of them,
the brothers, they're do a great job with the offense.
They're very balanced. They're throwing the ball very efficiently, very
close to three hundred yards a game through the air.
But they're balanced with two young freshman running backs that
look extremely explosive, very tough runners, you know, more cohesive

(19:41):
offensive line in his second year, and so very good,
you know, offensively. In the same run, English is their
defensive coordinator. I've known Ron for a long time. Very
experienced guy, but they're very sound. They got good players
at all levels of their defense, so it you know,
it'll be another challenge.

Speaker 5 (19:59):
But that's kind of the same thing you and I
talk about every week up here, isn't it.

Speaker 23 (20:04):
We seem to always play a pretty good opponent, So
that's nothing new, and we're used to it with competing
in the SEC. Like I said, I have a lot
of respect for Louisville, but uh, you know, it's about
us and about our execution and how we go play
and how we finish, you know, so I want to
finish on a positive notes. I know it's been a
difficult time for for our fans. You know, again, it

(20:25):
didn't meet expectation, but this is a big one. If
we could get a victory against Louisville.

Speaker 7 (20:30):
Looking for a six in a row, it's an incredible streak.

Speaker 5 (20:34):
Yeah, I think that would be a record. Tom.

Speaker 23 (20:35):
That's your you're the stat man, and I think you
I think I saw that a year ago or a
week ago. You had it or saw it somewhere. But
but yeah, I mean, you know, as I mentioned that,
that really doesn't carry into this week. You know you
have to go beat them this year and and this
week it's always a new opponent, and so you know,

(20:56):
we we have to put it together this year.

Speaker 7 (20:58):

we have to get a good fix on, you know,

have to get a fix on where we feel like
we need room and you know, help in the portal,
and also finishing touches on recruiting. We'll have about one

(25:04):
week left with high school recruiting at that point, so
we've already got it on the calendar to be in
there Sunday, right after the Louisville game, you know, just
getting the work on player personnel.

Speaker 7 (25:16):
Chris, thank you for the question. Chris wins a twenty
five dollars gift card from Alumni Hall for his question
being chosen as our question of the Week from Alumni Hall.
It's at Alumni Hall on X and if you have
a question for Coach Tops, you can reach us on
the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line. It's eight hundred and

(25:36):
six oh six four to two sixty three inside Lexington
a direct call at two eight zero Katz two two
eight seven. You can post at UK Sports Network on X,
or you can post on the Kentucky Football Facebook page.
As far as the quarterback position, how do you also
handle that? With the guy who's been your starter, Brock.

Speaker 23 (25:55):
Fandergres Brock and I had a I don't know how
long long conversation on Sunday, and uh he and I
sat down and talked, you know, for for a good while.
And uh he and I have had conversations, you know,
maybe least one a week for the past two or
three weeks. And he is just an unbelievable young man.

Speaker 5 (26:17):
You know, he's ultimate team guy. I mean, the ultimate
team guy.

Speaker 23 (26:21):
And uh I just absolutely love everything about him. You know,
he's only been our program for a year, but he's
had a strong impact, and I just I just can't
say enough good things about him.

Speaker 5 (26:35):
Is it, you know, just a person, a human being.

Speaker 23 (26:37):
It's just he's he's an amazing he's an amazing young person.
And uh, you know, so we had a great conversation
and I'll just leave it between he and I. Really
he prefers it that way, you know, to be honest socially.

Speaker 5 (26:49):
He yeah, he just you know, he wants it that way.

Speaker 7 (26:53):
I've got a question from Gokats on social media asking
you to talk about having the ball at the five
yard line or closer several times in the last month
and not being able to punch it into the end zone.

Speaker 5 (27:06):
Yeah, it's frustrating as heck. You know, it really is.

Speaker 23 (27:09):
You know, there's no excuse, there's no good reason I'm
gonna say anything other than you know, we realize that
and it's not good enough, and it's something that we
absolutely have to work on obviously this week, but certainly
in the future.

Speaker 7 (27:28):
You have We've talked about Cutter as a quarterback. Jamaran
Willcox another strong performance running the football as you're leading rusher.
Willie Rodriguez starting to come a little bit at the
tight end position. As a true freshman.

Speaker 23 (27:39):
Yeah, without a doubt. I think those guys are really
standing out of will he has. You know, he had
three catches on Saturday. He really belongs. He's got that
big physical presence that we're looking for. Jamirion, you know,
continues to make people miss, you know, get some quality
yards against really tough defenses. So that's a good thing.
You know, if we could get cut her rolling, you know,

(28:01):
that'll give a lot of hope for.

Speaker 5 (28:02):
For the future.

Speaker 23 (28:03):
So hopefully we could get cut Her off to a good,
good start here this week.

Speaker 7 (28:08):
With the offensive line, you're losing guys like Eli Hawks
and Marcus Cox there. And I think somebody asked you
about it at your news conference today and you can
elaborate on this further. Fans, you think you're you feel
pretty good about where you are on the interior part
of the old And.

Speaker 23 (28:28):
We feel like we have guards that you know, that
could play. We feel like we have four guards that
that you know will be a year older, you know,
get get the some strength, you know, continue to work
with them, develop them in the off season. You know,
would like to add another center that could play at
a high level next year.

Speaker 5 (28:45):
Malachi a tackle.

Speaker 23 (28:46):
You know, a year older, continue to get stronger, can
be a really good tackle. But we are going to
need some some guys at tackle. You know that that
there's no mystery there that uh, you know, we need
a few offensive tackles. And uh, I think most people
in the country would tell you that as well, maybe
not all, but several.

Speaker 7 (29:03):
And Malachi was kind of thrown into the fire ahead
of what your normal plan for him would have been.

Speaker 5 (29:09):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 23 (29:10):
And I really appreciate him because he's not getting his
head down. He's competing against the very best in the country.
He's a very talented young player that's going to continue
to get stronger, can continue to get better. He's not defeated,
he's not discouraged, and I'm very excited about him.

Speaker 7 (29:28):

(33:21):
they have some features i'm sure from that trip that
are up at bbntnight dot com and you can catch
the show. Their congratulations to UK volleyball coach Craig Skinner
and his squad. They completed a sweep of Arkansas yesterday
to claim a share of their eighth Southeastern Conference championship.

(33:42):
Eight matches in a row for the Kentucky volleyball team
that they've won and it takes at least three sets
to win the match, and so with eight matches, they've
played a total of twenty five sets, so that means
over eight matches they've lost one set. Pretty impressive run.
They'll play at Missouri on Wednesday night and have a

(34:05):
chance to clinch the conference championship. Outright, coach Mark stoops here,
we're taking your questions on the Clark's Pumping Shop phone
line eight hundred six oh six four two sixty three
or inside Lexington it's two eight cats two eight zho
two two eight seven.

Speaker 23 (34:22):
I was talking and shaking hands in between there. What
did you say about our volleyball team?

Speaker 7 (34:27):
The share they've won eight straight matches clinched a share
of the SEC title.

Speaker 5 (34:32):
Coach Skinner is amazing, he really is. What a what
a great job. Good for them.

Speaker 7 (34:37):
Yeah, they've had a fantastic run here to close out
the season and think everybody can at one point was
writing off the championship to Texas and Kentucky has battled
back to get the title. So they've had a great
incredible that's good for him. Yeah, he does a great,
a fantastic job. But don't have a call at the moment,
so let me just talk to you a little bit

(34:57):
about the roster construction timeline because it's going to get
hyper speed after this game Saturday, because you have signing
day next week, right, Yes, fourth plus you said you
gotta have those conversations with guys who are leaving or
who you know you will need to suggest they need
to find another spot because you have a tight scholarship situation.

Speaker 23 (35:21):
Yeah, it's just it's it's just been a very fluid year.
It's this signing date. First of all, it's the first
time it's ever been necessarily Yeah, and so you know,
you get done with the season, you have signed. They
usually we're on the road and going on home business
and trying to secure these commitments and all that, and

(35:42):
then you know, it's it's been volatile this this offseason
with knowing how many scholarships we're going to have, you know,
with with the settlement that's still not settled until April.
You know, we talked about one hundred and five, we
talked about ninety five, and we go back to eighty five.
So it's been really hard juggling all of that. And

(36:03):
uh so this year, this signing period will be much
different than anything any of us have been through. But
we're all in it, you know, we're all we're all
under the same rules and so we'll make it work.
But it's certainly challenging.

Speaker 7 (36:18):
And that we were talking about the offensive line in
the last break. That's a particularly challenging spot because ideally
those guys uh in the uh in the old days
were recruited and developed over time. Yeah, uh, and now
you can uh catch up if if you know, if
you had some guys that didn't get they ended up

(36:39):
getting injured, didn't ever get to play for you that
were highly uh touted prospects. So that happens, and so
you have to catch up, and you can do that
with the portal. But the thing is the offensive line
is the you know, there's a there's a lot of
people in that line.

Speaker 5 (36:52):
There's a lot of people.

Speaker 23 (36:54):
You know, you're you're you know, you're playing five guys
on every snap, and uh, you need those guys to
play together. You'd like to have some continuity there, some consistency,
and uh, you know, it takes a lot of depth.
I mean, you need you know, you're looking for seventeen
eighteen offensive linemen. You know that that that can play,
you know eventually, even if they're developmental guys. And you're right,

(37:17):
we've made a great living off of that of taking
some guys and just and working with them for years
and becoming very good players for us. And it's just
different time right now. We've had, you know, turnover at
the offensive coordinator position, turnover at the old line position,
you know, with coaching, and therefore, you know, it's created

(37:38):
some you know, instability, and we got to we got
to catch up, and we got to get on the
same page. And you know, we'll we'll work hard at it.
Eric Wilford is a tremendous recruiter and he does a
great job of working the guys and we're getting better
even as the year goes on. But we know we've
got to continue to develop our young players, and then
we also have to recruit.

Speaker 7 (37:57):
One of those young guys that's played a little bit
is have a selm. But I wonder, do you get
to speak to this a little bit. I think about
a guy like Dreg Jackson, who in twenty seventeen became
your starting center as a red shirt freshman and played
very well, and then continue to build on that. Do
you have guys that aren't playing this year that you
think will be in a position to.

Speaker 5 (38:18):
Give you some help. Yeah, without a doubt.

Speaker 23 (38:20):
We've got guys on our roster and we've got some
big guys and guys with some the length that you
look for in the strength, and you know, we'll continue
to do that. I think again, tackle is the position
that you're really going to go out and hunt, and
we have some high school guys that were really high
on but you know, that's very difficult to come in
as a true freshman and win and compete against, you know,

(38:42):
the top of the line players in the country, you know,
the edge rushers in the SEC. So we have to
continue to, you know, like again look at the portal
to help us in a few positions like that.

Speaker 7 (38:56):
I think about this for a guy like Malachi having
it again to kind of being thrown into the fire,
this seems like it's maybe one of the the strongest
year's there there's The league is so loaded every year,
but in particular edge rushers. Yeah, this particular year, you
guys have faced starts back to South Carolina that there's
two that they have, but there have been a lot

(39:16):
of good ones.

Speaker 5 (39:17):
Yeah, without a doubt.

Speaker 23 (39:18):
You know there's tremendous defensive lines and uh you know
you're blocking some.

Speaker 5 (39:22):
Very good players, so you know everybody.

Thank you, Hey Stu, thank you for everything you've done.

Speaker 5 (43:06):
Thank you, Jeremy.

Speaker 7 (43:07):
Well you're very welcome.

Speaker 3 (43:09):
Well, my question was that I was wanting to see
your insight with Cutter being that quarterback going into the
Louisville game.

Speaker 29 (43:16):
It's it's always a big game in my household, especially
radcor Thanksgiving and just wanting to.

Speaker 27 (43:21):
Hear some of your insights.

Speaker 5 (43:22):
Yeah. Thanks.

Speaker 23 (43:24):
You know, I think we're all excited to see Cutter,
you know, go perform and and see what he could
do as the starter. And we saw glimpses in two
different games starting the second half, and he performed very well,
you know, in the first game, and step up in
competition in the next game and he and he still
performed very well. So you know, we were pleased with that.

(43:48):
He's worked really hard this entire year. You know, we're
just looking for a little spark here, and he's a
guy that obviously showed some glimpses.

Speaker 5 (43:57):
And you know, I've.

Speaker 23 (43:58):
Said for a long time he was our future. I
did not know when you know that that was going
to take place, and and uh, you know, we're gonna
We're gonna give him a shot here this Saturday, and
hopefully he's gonna give us a spark not only for
this game that's very important to you and our fan base,
but also for the future.

Speaker 7 (44:16):
Really strong arm. He's certainly demonstrated that where where What
are the areas that he's grown the most since he
came here straight out of high school at Likes to
Christian to play in the toughest league in the country.

Speaker 23 (44:30):
Well, he's worked hard. I mean just strength alone. You know,
it's a it's very physical. You know, even in that game,
he took some shots and you know, he and I were,
you know, I was talking to him during the game
and I'm like, got her, all right, We're going to
get the ball out of your hands here. You know,
you've been hit enough. And he was hes. He's like, no,

(44:51):
it feels good. And I'm like, well, I don't know
about feeling good, but I think you met like it's
good to get hit, you know, you know, it's good
for him to heel like just that's right and be
be involved in you know, something to that effect. Don't
quote me exactly, but basically like, no, it's good or
you know, it's good to get hit, and you know,

(45:13):
and essentially get all that rust off him because he's
used to playing ball, right, you know all you know
last year he played and you know did very well
here in town, and you know, so in college, you know,
he's been sitting there, you know, working with the scout team,
taking you know, two and three reps, you know, and uh,
getting better, but getting himself physically ready. During the off week,

(45:35):
I told you that that that Brock was injured and
so he took a lot of reps with the Ones
because we just wanted to prep him for the end
of the season here and just see exactly.

Speaker 5 (45:44):
What we have in him.

Speaker 23 (45:46):
And so he got a lot of those reps for
like two weeks when Brock was hurt and uh, you know,
and he made a big jump. I think even from
the first time I played him. I said this last week,
from the first time I played him in the Florida
game to the next game he played, take a little
switch went off in his head with the way he prepared,
how diut in he was, and he realized just you

(46:07):
know what a high level it takes just to prepare.

Speaker 7 (46:11):
You used a word I think when we were chatting
after the game on Saturday. I think it was when
you said this present use the word presence, Yeah, which
is something that it's necessarily not necessarily easy to define,
but you certainly can recognize it when you see it.
Is that something that was evident early on when you

(46:32):
recruiting Cutter?

Speaker 23 (46:33):
Yeah, he you know he does. He just has a
very good demeanor. He has a very good presence about him.
You know, people like him, like the players like him.
You know, he gets along with everybody on the team,
and just when he's in the pocket, he has a
great feel. You know, he understands when they hit the
check down, you know, when to take the shots.

Speaker 5 (46:54):
He sees the field very well, so, you know, just
a lot to build on. You know.

Speaker 23 (46:59):
I think you saw it in the game when you
were talking about the completion to Willie where he stepped up,
you know, evaded some some pressure or some you know,
and bought some time and then threw it on the run.

Speaker 5 (47:12):
You know, that's something that we've.

Speaker 23 (47:13):
Seen all year in practice, just the arm angles and
the you know, different throws that he can make with touch,
you know.

Speaker 5 (47:21):
So, uh, you know that that excites us as well.

Speaker 7 (47:24):
I remember Coach Brooks telling me his story in their
turnaround season in six They had a quarterback competition coming
into the year and Andre Woodson won it. But Rich
said he really wasn't sure Andre was going to be
the guy until the first game and they were actually
blown out by Louisville. But he said the way he
took the hits, kept getting back up making plays. And

(47:48):
you saw some of that with Cutter on Saturday. He
gets sacked, gets back up, makes the throat a burry
on that can show you something even in defeat.

Speaker 23 (47:55):
Yeah, without a doubt, you know, and uh where Andre
went on to be just a great quarter here and
you know, hopefully we'll have the same and Cutter let's.

Speaker 7 (48:03):
Go back to the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line. Larry,
what's your question for coach Stops?

Speaker 29 (48:09):
Hey, guys, how you doing?

Speaker 7 (48:11):
Laraen?

Speaker 29 (48:11):
Wish you guys a happy Thanksgiving to coach Oops you are.
You are a great coach. I love having you as
our coach. You've really, uh ride our program a long way.
All I heard last year was we could be a
better team this year and our record may not be

(48:33):
as good if we are a better team. And with
the expansion of the league, so we've kind of taken
a step back. How can we get back to where
we were and fighting forward going to Atlanta taking our
next step forward that we were we were aiming for sure.

Speaker 23 (48:55):
Yeah, thank you, Yeah, thanks Larry. I think that's, you know,
a very good question, because you know, you hit these
ups in these downs, and you know we've been relatively
consistent maybe you know, you know, there's always a little
bit of what ifs at the end of a season.
You know we're close on one game or another. This year,
you know, it feels it's very difficult, you know, and

(49:17):
it's been a tough year, but we're not as far
off as you would think, and you know, we don't
feel that way. You know, we feel like we have
a lot of things in place to be successful. That's
the one advantage of the portal. If there's certain areas,
if there's certain positions where we feel like we're caught short,
then you could go out and get them fixed. And

(49:37):
you know, that's what we plan to do. There's still
a really great nucleus of players on our team. I
love the fact that, you know, we need some continuity.
There's been so much turnover with the offense that continuity
is important. And it's also important with recruiting. With all
that turnover, it hurts you in recruiting. So we'll just

(49:58):
continue to grind away. But but you know, I definitely,
you know, am excited about you know, rebooting this team
and rebuilding this team and getting the work in the
off season. You know, obviously we have a huge game
in front of us this Saturday, and that that's our
full concentration, but we're all so excited about the future.

Speaker 7 (50:17):
One last segment on the UK Healthcare Markstup Show, and
we'll be right back with that on the UK Sports Network.

Speaker 26 (50:23):
Ever wonder where the Capital A and Chick fil A
came from? It started with Grade A top quality chicken.
But we believed everything, not just the food, should be
Grade A.

Speaker 3 (50:33):
Hi, I'm Jira, I am a team leader at Chick

On Facebook, follow on Instagram. It's at UK Underscore Sports Network,
or you can go and follow on x at UK
Sports Network. A few minutes left with Coachtops, let me
get to one question from Tyler at UK Sports Network Coach.
He says, when you're looking at the portal does the
previous school or level of football at which a player

(53:56):
played factor into your decision? And Tyler says, it seems
like a lot of transfer several transfers have come from
lower level programs and done well.

Speaker 5 (54:04):
They have.

Speaker 23 (54:04):
Yeah, a guy like Zion jumps out at US Texas
Marcus Cox, you know, And so yes, I think we
look at we look at all that you know, and
you know, some of the better players are coming up,
you know, any different schools, not just at our school,
at other SEC schools as well. So we have to

(54:26):
look at so many different players and just take the
best players we can that can fit our program.

Speaker 7 (54:30):
Do you have are are there any guys assigned on
the staff because you've got the extra personnel that you
have now versus the old days that would track things
like that. Hey, you come up with prospects.

Speaker 23 (54:41):
Without a doubt, you know, and you know we've I'd say,
we've watched you know, three hundred offensive linemen.

Speaker 5 (54:47):
Wow.

Speaker 7 (54:48):
Yeah, yeah, so they're from all over the place, yes, yes,
and just trying to identify somebody one that's got potential,
and then you have to also factor in can you
get them?

Speaker 23 (54:59):
Yes, exactly, these are the resources together because because yeah,
they who.

Speaker 7 (55:04):
Else is after them? All that stuff exactly. Somebody on
Saturday asked you after the the news conference about what
reasons that you have for optimism about bouncing back, and
you said, young players, attitude of the team, and the
recruiting that's taking place to this point. And you said
you have some areas that you have to to get

(55:26):
better in certain areas.

Speaker 5 (55:27):
Yeah, yeah, we know.

Speaker 23 (55:29):
You know, we know where we fell short in certain
areas and didn't live up to, you know, our own standards,
and uh, you know, I got to get that fixed.
I mean that that also is extremely motivating and you know,
energizes you to get some things fixed. I mean, none
of us want to live in this world that we
lived in all year this year, so uh, you know,
we have to get to work. And there's a variety

(55:51):
of things and reasons and you know those are past.
I don't want to talk about it anymore. Let's just
get a fixed Let's just be solution based minded. That's
what I need to be in our staff. I mean,
we need to find solutions, you know, and we understand
why we got caught in this position. And it's not
fun and I don't ever want to be here again.

Speaker 7 (56:08):
You have talked throughout your time here about that edge
that you had from the place where you grew up
to a tough town there in Youngstown. You invents coming
up there, and I think a lot of your fans
always have believed that Mark Stoops is at his best
when he's got a chip on his shoulder. So do
you think you'll have a chip on your shoulder going

(56:30):
into next year? Yeah?

Speaker 23 (56:31):
I think without a doubt, you know what I mean.
And there's no question I think. You know, anybody that
grew up with the you know, a fighting mentality like
that and get back in the corner. You only have
one option, you know, and going down is not one
of them. So so we're gonna come out swinging and
you know, and do our very best, and you know,
and I feel very optimistic that we'll get it done.

Speaker 7 (56:53):
Little listen a minute here. What's Thanksgiving week like for
your guys and your staff. It's a good week. It's
nice for our players. They get some time off as
far as school goes. They're off Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, so
for them it's a little extra rest, which is nice.
And we'll have a normal Monday, Tuesday, Wednesdays about the same.
We move it up maybe just a little bit, get
a little more daylight out on the field. And then

(57:15):
also the players go to the assistant coaches houses for
dinner and get a home cooked.

Speaker 5 (57:20):
Meal, spend some time with the families.

Speaker 23 (57:21):
On Wednesday, Thursday, we'll have our walkthrough day, so after
that we'll have Thanksgiving dinner as a team, and then
they get a little time to go break off and
a lot of them have family or friends close by.
They'll do that and then we just get back at
it with a normal schedule on Friday.

Speaker 7 (57:38):
Happy Thanksgiving to you. Thank everybody in the program.

Speaker 5 (57:40):
Thanks Tom, same to you and everybody listening.
