Good evening, everybody, and welcome in the UK health Care
Bart Stoops Show. As many of you know, Coach Stoops
is in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio today with the
rest of his family as they lay their mother to rest,
and he will be back at it with the Cats tomorrow,
but he is not with us tonight. Coach Vince Merrow
(01:20):
will fill in and he'll be here to talk Kentucky
football with us over the course of this hour today
at the weekly news conference. Obviously, coach Stoops was not
in town for that, so the two coordinators took over,
and just a couple of headlines out of that. Offensive
coordinator Bush Hampton said they're still evaluating the quarterback plan
(01:41):
for this week when he was asked about that by
the media, and he also talked about was asked about
the red zone issues, not being able to get it
in when they get inside the five the last few weeks,
so they may have to look at throwing more because
of the way the defenses are packing it in against
them trying to run it in. Defensive coordinator Brad White
(02:03):
unhappy with how Kentucky played the run, to say the least,
and it was disappointing for him. And he also talked
about teams need to be defenses need to be mentally
tough and only think about the next series and that's
where Kentucky needs to be and not worrying about any
bigger picture items about opportunities missed on the other side
(02:24):
of the ball or frustration or anything else. So those
were just a few of the headlines from the news
conference today. We're going to get to a break when
we come back. Coach Merrow will join us and we'll
get into this past week's game and looking ahead to
the matchup with the Balls. This is the UK Healthcare

The Big Dog is.
Speaker 5 (06:23):
In the House.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
Ben Sparre's the associate head coach, coaches a tight ends.
He's a recruiting coordinator in the NFL liaison and probably
touched on all of that over the course of the show.
But coach, tough times for you guys and your players
trying to fight through it.
Speaker 5 (06:37):
But that is life in the SEC. It's unforgiving, yes,
it is.
Speaker 11 (06:40):
At a time, I was watching the Browns game yesterday,
you know, probably from Ohio, and they end up beating
the Ravens and I listen today coach, they was on
a five game losing streak and he said, we just
took one play at a time, went back to work
and pulled out a big victory. So, you know, first thing,
I just want to give Michauds again the coach stoops
(07:01):
and his family. You know, he's home, like you mentioned
doing that. Uh, no, tough, but if you know his mother,
she was right. She was very close lady. She would
tell him, hey, get back and start working so and
you will. Yes, yeah, she was her her her husband,
Mark's dad was my actually my position coach, and our
family was very close. But she just was a unique woman.
(07:21):
I know people say about their barbs, but she really
was unique. And she was a mother to all types
of people, you know, all races. She was really really
a good person.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
Uh So, rest in peace to missus Stoops, and condolences
oveously to Mark and all of his family. Let's talk
a little bit about what it was like around the
facility today, trying to get the one loss put behind
you from last week.
Speaker 5 (07:48):
And to look ahead to a very good Tennessee team.
Speaker 11 (07:50):
Well it was for we had a big time recruiting
this weekend. And I was at dinner and I got
a text from Stoops last night about ten and he's like,
I say, man, how things going. How it's good? But
them guys ready tomorrow. So it was a great attitude.
Guys came in. You know, we got some leaders on
our team, a lot of older guys. So's it's it's
it's kind of like when we lost to South Carolina,
then we lost to Georgia, excuse me, and then we
(08:12):
got ready for Old miss So I think it's gonna
be the same approach. Guys are excited. They love to
play Tennessee. They're looking forward going down there.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
So you did have the setback, didn't play well against
South Carolina and played a beautiful game against Georgia, took
them to the Wired and got all missed a couple
of weeks later.
Speaker 5 (08:30):
What is it That form is in there? Yeah, but
how do you get it back?
Speaker 11 (08:34):
You gotta have, just like I said, good leaders. You
got to have good position coaches. And you know one thing,
Mark did a great job when we lost to South
Carolina got us ready for Georgia and it made us
play that game that we played against Old Miss. So
I'm not I'm not at least worried about that. You know,
he'd get back, and you know, we got some good
position coaches, so we'll be ready for this challenge with
(08:55):
they the number seven or five team in the country.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
You know, I didn't look today lest that saw the seven.
I don't know if the fifth today or not. But
game will kick at seven forty five Eastern, so covers
will start at five thirty Eastern on the use UK
Sports Network stations on Saturday. And this is obviously a
team with coach Hypel that plays very fast, really spreads
it out kind of the old Iggus the Baylor system
(09:21):
out of the Big twelve, and puts a lot of
stress on a defense.
Speaker 11 (09:24):
Yeah, it's gonna be that, and it's gonna be loud.
I mean, that's probably one of the low of the
stadiums we're gonna go play in. And you know, the
people are gonna be fired up as Halloween, what right,
a couple of days after Halloween. I don't know when
is Halloween. I know it's coming up. They we played
them two years ago. I think it was around Halloween.
They were pretty jacked down there.
Speaker 6 (09:40):
You know.
Speaker 11 (09:41):
I think old miss preparedness for that, and uh, you know,
I think Brad will have a good game plan. Like
I say, these guys are looking forward to playing this game.
We a little banged up, but hey, it's the next
man up and so we'll be ready.

Welcome back into our show.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
Coach Vince Merrow is with us and we're going to
get to some of your questions here in a bit,
but finish up with a few more minutes here chatting
with Vince. One thing you and I were talking about
off there and Dane Key came up at four catches
for eighty three yards. He's been just steady game in
he came out, and he came up and did the
radio interview with at Gabriel and those are not easy
(14:10):
to do after a tough loss. And he came up
handled himself like a pro. And when he came out
of the interview, as I just as I was walking
up to get ready for the chat with Mark, I said,
I said, I want to congratulate you on how on
your approach just I said, you're a complete pro. And
he got himself ready for the season. Yes, And he's
(14:31):
showing up every week and he's making plays when his
numbers called, and he's got himself in a position where
he could, you know, be stronger to fight for catches
like a couple we saw on Saturday.
Speaker 5 (14:41):
And he's just been very impressive.
Speaker 6 (14:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (14:44):
You know Dane, when we recruited amount of Douglas, you know,
I think he was about one eight five and he
played as a true freshman and made some plays. But
you know I told him, I said, man, you got
to get bigger and stronger faster. And when we hired
to kill shorts to kill challenged him, said, hey, how
you see yourself going in this year? And he came
(15:05):
in at two ten. He's a little taller now six three.
But what I love about Dane he does everything right
on the academic report that he's all a's and b's.
He don't miss class, he's not late than anything. He's
he's he's just a pros pro. And I think some
of our other guys can learn from that because they
see how he carries himself. And I think that's a
(15:25):
you know, that's you know, his parents are really good people.
He got a dad and played at Kentucky's brother plays
for the Broncos, so he had a lot of people
to look at. But I really love Dane. He's really
and he's making himself some money too.
Speaker 4 (15:37):
Yeah, you're the NFL liaison. You were sucking about the
fact that scouts in football, basketball, whatever, they look at
a lot of those things, way beyond how many catches
you made or how many points you scored.
Speaker 11 (15:49):
Yes, but like you say, he just increased his value
every year. And I mean you see him now, Tom,
he's I mean he looks like an SEC receiver, yes,
and he's he when he when he's targeted, he makes
the plays, he blocks. He's just an unselfish young man.
And when you unselfish, things come your way, so I'm
very excited about him.
Speaker 4 (16:09):
Defense had a tough dight without in that second half
a couple of key performers that certainly I'm sure contributed
to the struggles against the run with Weaver going out
and Derek Jackson also getting dinged up. And that's guys
on that side of the bomb, and that that's where
most of the names were on the availability report when
it came out last week.
Speaker 11 (16:29):
Yeah, we are really banged up on defense, but we
have debt. But you know, I mean people don't forget
even Dion's was kind of nicked up too, and so
you know, there's a lot of guys over there. But
like in time of the NFL, and it's kind of
like the way this is going SEC is like the NFL.
You got to play hurt. Nobody's one hundred percent. You're
(16:50):
not even ninety percent, So our guys are really sucking
it up. I really was proud of of Dion just
because I know that the pain he was having all
during the weeks, so I was glad that he was
out there. But a lot of them guys on defense
is stepping up. Alexa Fari stepped up and made some plays.
Brad Brad really does a great job with them guys.
And you got young corners that are out there. I
(17:11):
mean we went out one of the best corners in
the country and them guys are you know they they
out there competing.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
Yeah, hopefully Max will we'll get back at some point
in the not too distant future because he could be
a big boost to that secondary talking about an LL
SEC caliber talent.
Speaker 11 (17:27):
Yes, and he's a guy that really was. I mean,
you know, the scouts really love him too. I mean,
he's a good player. It was unfortunate what happened to him,
but you know, we should be seeing him soon. But
I think Chris Collins does a really good job with
them guys. He had DJ Waller and all them other
guys in there, tryan and and and I think it
gonna be played like with three or four new corners.
(17:48):
And you would have told me that going in the
Old Miss game that we was gonna be without them guys.
I was kind of like, man, I was a little nervous,
But they really held up their own.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
Yeah, they played trepidiously against one of the highest scoring
team in the country, held them to seventeen points. You talk,
Mark Haz you mentioned leaders on the team. When times
are tough, you want those guys to.
Speaker 5 (18:12):
Step to the forefront. Are you seeing that?
Speaker 6 (18:15):
Yeah, you see it.
Speaker 11 (18:17):
You just gotta be careful because you know I was
talking earlier off the air with this transferporter. You get
guys that come in with experience, but it's kind of like,
well should I say something? Well, just like Pop Johnson.
I think Pop is a really good leader, but I
think for him it's like, well, I don't want to
step on noo toes and we don't have time for that.
Speaker 6 (18:34):
Guys need to.
Speaker 11 (18:35):
Step up and really lead these young guys and lead
guys to say, hey, let's rally got we know we
got a good team. Let's pull this thing together and
let's go play some football this Saturday.
Speaker 4 (18:46):

Subscribe to the Behind Kentucky Football podcast. It is presented
by District seven Social sign up today. It's available for
free on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio and the official UK
Athletics app. Associate head coach Ms Barrow is with us
as we go through the UK healthcare Mark Stoops Show
coach Stoops obviously in Youngstown today with his family for
(21:39):
the funeral of their mom. Let's get to some questions
coming off the social media feed at UK Sports Network.
Start with Brandon Tennessee runs the uptempo offense. What are
some things that you can do to prepare for that
hurry up style?
Speaker 11 (21:54):
Seriously stop it and then just you know, prepare during
the week, you know, according against our office and we
play fast. We got some no huddle stuff and we
go fast and we give you know, the defensive looks.
So you never can really simulate that, but you can
be close. But when you get a chance, when it's
third down and four, third down and five, you got
to stop them or you're just gonna keep going fast.
(22:16):
So we preparing for that. Uh, you know, Brad, Brad
really does a good job, you know, to a certain
stent trying to slow that thing down.
Speaker 4 (22:24):
And I'm sure it helps the bore times you could
get the ball at least two around midfield or better
even if you had to end with a punt, because
they're really gonna speed up when they get in good
field position.
Speaker 11 (22:35):
Yes, I think you remember Tom when they came here
last year. We were back and forth, but we got
to stay on the field too, and and and eat
up some of the clock and get drive so we
can give our defense ve rest. So it's gonna be
a team a team effort. Man got to play Copper
Mary football, and I feel we haven't been doing that
on a consistent basis, and I think this would be
a good week. Let's get it done.
Speaker 4 (22:57):
It's time for our Alumni Hull Fan Question of the
week and it comes from Kenny and you can send
them into at UK Sports Network and you have a
chance to win a twenty five dollars gift card from
Alumni Hall. Kenny says that we stopped ole Missus offense
on the road. What similarities does their offense have to
(23:19):
with the way Tennessee plays.
Speaker 11 (23:21):
They both play fast and they have good receivers, got
good quarterback. We just you know, like I said, it's
gonna be hard when you go against this office. You
cannot we cannot you know, go out and play like
Tennessee in practice with our offense. But you do have
to get stops and you do have to get off
the field as a defense. And when you get off
(23:43):
the field, we have to you know, keep the ball
moving and get first downs and give our defense a rest.
So it's just a thing where Coach White is gonna
have a good game plan and we're gonna go out
them guys will go out and execute it.
Speaker 4 (23:55):
Talking with coach fitz Sparrow here on the show, and
you can all on the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line
or keep sitting into questions at UK Sports Network or
on the Facebook page for Kentucky Football. Obviously, you're the
recruiting coordinator, so you're dealing with the guys that you
guys are hoping to land, you have commitments from, or
you're still recruiting when times aren't going well, what do
(24:20):
you how does it affect recruiting much? What kind of
feedback do you get? How do you do your job
at that time?
Speaker 11 (24:27):
Well, that's when I got to earn my money and
and be like, I just think are reputation especially we
got guys at Ohio, we got guys committed in this state.
We got guys in Detroit, and I'm sorry, Michigan. I
think you just parents when they come here and they
come on the official visits and they be around, they
(24:48):
see the culture and they see, okay, I really see
myself here. That's why they commit. But you do get
you know, we got some guys, some highly recruited guys
that are committed to us, and a lot of major schools,
uh still trying to get them, and uh, you just
gotta got your message got to be the same. And uh,
you know it's different now with transferport or nil. Your
(25:10):
team really changes year to year. So you tell these
recruits that you coming in and you're going to be
on the team. And you see right now we're playing
four or five freshmen right now. So I just think
you got to stay consistent. And you know, it makes
it when you when you're losing a little bit and
makes your job harder. But that's I mean, that's what
I live for a time. I love recruiting. I love
building relationships. So right now we actually been actually flipping
(25:32):
guys from other schools. So and we had a big
time kid here this weekend. So I think We're gonna
get some other good news real soon. So you're obviously
good at it. What do you like about it? Do
you like it so much? I think it comes from
and this may You know, my dad and granddad were
both ministers and and you got to be a people person.
And I love going meeting new people and families and
(25:54):
and sitting down with these guys. They come from all over,
you know, rural areas, inner city, just all types of place.
And you get to going in places and travel a lot,
and you meet these guys and you bring them here
and it's just I don't know, I just love doing it.
So a lot of coaches you think they like doing it,
but they don't, you know. They you know, they want
to still be around their families that want to do
this and that. And I tell a lot of our coaches, hey,
(26:16):
you tell your wife they like this nice house, they
like these cars. You better get out and recruit because
you got to recruit every day.
Speaker 6 (26:23):
It don't end. You gotta recruit every day. And I do.
Speaker 11 (26:25):
Got to get people from Lexington and the state of
Kentucky props. Every time we bring people here, I say, hey,
go out and just mingle around and sometimes I can
backfire against you, but it hasn't yet. And it's that
southern hospitality that these parents really like. And I really
got to take my hand off to the people of Kentucky.
They really got good hospitality down here, and the parents
(26:47):
see it.
Speaker 4 (26:48):
And the heart of the program that you guys have
built here from where it was when you came on
board to the heights that you have hit out of
that was based on recruiting and developing. Yes, Josh Allen
probably be the best example of that.
Speaker 5 (27:07):
But yes, there are many others.
Speaker 11 (27:09):
Yeah, when we first got here, and it's no knock
against nobody I had. I thought we had some better
talent at University of Toledo, Like when you went all
the way from one to eighty five, you may have
three good alignment, but two probably shouldn't even be in
this lead and we'd be playing with them type of
guys and dbs. We were playing with guys that wasn't
(27:30):
that talented playing this league. So we went out and recruited.
It had to be a belief, and they came in
and seeing that, Hey, the culture was here, there were
good people here. Administration was very supportive. Now it's like
we recruited a lot of four some five star guys,
but we still would get some three star guys that
we developed. And you look right now, in the last
(27:51):
five six years, we were want the top ten schools
to have NFL guys and have guys in the NFL
Draft every year.
Speaker 6 (27:56):
Now we don't have a lot this.
Speaker 4 (27:58):
Year, and now you have to recruit not only the freshmen,
but you have to recruit the guys on your own
team with a transfer portal and always be aware of
somewhere you can pick somebody up from somewhere else, and
you guys do a good job of Windale Robinson is
probably the best example of this of maintaining relationships of
players you don't maybe get the first time, but you
get them the second time.
Speaker 11 (28:18):
Yeah, Like I tell people time up, I think high
school recruiting is the draft, and like how the draft
they have for an NFL they may have like ten
guys or eight guys, or our draft is anywhere from
eighteen to twenty. I think the mistake people make they
go out and they just go take guys from the portal,
and you're not you don't know a lot of these
(28:40):
guys and they come in and your culture is built
a certain way, and then you bring certain guys in.
You just got to be careful with that. And so
we have hit pretty good on some you know when
Will Levis one day, just some different guys that helped
us win ten games. Your recruiting is still built from
high school recruiting. Don't ever get that twisted. And I
think when them guys see the culture that we have,
(29:02):
you bring a transfer portal guy in, they build, they
feed into that. But if you bring a whole bunch
of older guys in and they they're they're how I
want to say this, Their culture from other places were
not that good, and then they come in our place.
You just gotta be careful and make sure you really
get your eye on that.
Speaker 4 (29:21):
Yeah, I'm sure it's a lot of scouting, networking, just
trying to find out the best intelligence, if you will,
of guys you're trying to bring into your pros.
Speaker 11 (29:30):
Sir, yes, sir uh. And and then you got to
give like I said, you got to give credit to
you know, the support you got a lot of, like
I see today, you got the the a lot of
people that get to the NIO And and and I
look at and I say, you know, just the people
that have been supportive of that. And I see my
man Ron Brown, I see him somewhere over there, and
(29:52):
he's really good at what he does, and and I
really take my hand off, and I know all the
other culture take they had off to people that give
the NIO support. So we really grateful that. Thankful man.
It's really been working. So you know, we can get
more and do better, but the people have really been good,
they really have.
Speaker 4 (30:11):

(34:08):
taking your questions. Let's go to the Clark's Pumping Shop
phone line to Sean in Richmond. Hey Shawan, Hey Tom,
Hey coach, how you doing?
Speaker 5 (34:18):
What do you have for Sean?
Speaker 6 (34:20):
Hey?
Speaker 20 (34:21):
Well?
Speaker 22 (34:21):
Tom, I got a couple of things. I'm a UK lifer, Okay,
I put it this way. I uh uh I found
out I was licensed for my profession and three in
the morning, and I ordered suit.
Speaker 6 (34:31):
And tickets that night.
Speaker 22 (34:33):
So I'm I'm I'm in it for the long haul
here and I go to I was at Old Miss
and I went to the swap two years ago when
we won. So I'm a I'm a stoopscaser and through and.
Speaker 6 (34:42):
You need to come.
Speaker 22 (34:44):
Yes, what whatd you say?
Speaker 27 (34:46):
Coach?
Speaker 11 (34:47):
You need to come to Tennessee. Then this week you
see like you pretty good lecture.
Speaker 22 (34:52):
Uh Vince, I'll tell you I've been to that stadium
one time, and the ways you get treated by the
opposing fans, I think I'm okay.
Speaker 6 (35:01):
I got security.
Speaker 22 (35:05):
My question is you know I have after watching so
long the offense this year honestly is feeling a lot
of like pre Stoop's offense. And you've been through all
these different coordinators. You know the ins and outs of
each of these different systems to each of these different guys.
So I need a pump talk from a pep talk
from the from the big dog to make me feel
(35:27):
better about the trajectory of our team and this offense, because, honestly,
as much as I'm a uk Homer, our trajectory has
felt like it's come down this twenty two season. And
I love just to hear your thoughts on that. And
I still think we need to build a statue with
you and Stoops outside the center. But I need us
to park back up, you know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (35:46):
Thank you, Sean.
Speaker 11 (35:47):
Well, well, Sean, I really appreciate the call, and I'm
really serious about getting you down to Tennessee. So we
we talked about that. But let me just say this,
Bush Hannon is really a sharp young man. You know,
we already had our players picked before we hired him.
And you know, sometimes as a coordinator you have to
(36:08):
fit what the personnel is. I do know this, and
I was just telling Tom, you know when you watch
film and you in there, there's one thing is just
if you're getting your tail kicked, We're not doing that.
We just you know, it'smissing the block here or not
comboing to this guy. It's like little things like that
that causes things to happen. And then like our offense
is struggling. All I'm gonna tell you is just keep
(36:30):
keep supporting believing. Look, I'm very disappointed of some of
these losses, and uh, when people criticize us, I'm like
Stoup's where we're from. We big boys. We can take
the criticism. So you know, but I really feel bad
for our fans, and I'm telling you this. We will
get this thing going and just keep having guys like
(36:51):
you supporting us, and then I think you're gonna see
some good things coming down the line. And just give
a Butch Hamden some time because he just got in
here and we playing with a lot of guys. A
lot of young guys, were playing with some guys. You know,
a lot of guys were banged up. They're coming back now,
some guys coming back. So just keep supporting when you
you start seeing you know, the team that Mark Steus
(37:13):
has had that you loved and you know, playing hard
in physical and playing for this state. And you know,
I can say this wholeheartedly that we feel the fans.
We hear them. I'm very, very love these fans here.
I love them. They're the best in the best in
the country. Just keep supporting and we will come out
just like you went to Old Miss. People didn't give
(37:34):
us a chance. Just keep supporting us and see what happens.
Speaker 4 (37:36):
One of those exciting young players is in your room
and he had a couple of huge plays in that
ole Miss when the opening hit on the kickoff and
then a twenty five years catch and run later. Is
Willie Rodriguez from coming in, Kathleen.
Speaker 11 (37:49):
Yeah, I mean football's really got better in this state,
and that's why you see us taking more guys. But
I'm gonna tell you Willie Rodriguez is really gonna be
a really good player. I mean he's like almost six five,
he's two fifty two forty five. He's he's he's he's
a tough kid. Yeah, runs very runs about a four
to six. Uh, regardless of what happened, he was gonna play.
(38:11):
And I think, Tom, you see us play, you be
able to practice. He's actually gonna play more anyway. So, uh,
he's gonna be a guy that he set the toe
down there against Old Miss. I think a lot of
my buddies were like, man, who is that kid? And
they say, and then when he caught the screen for
thirty yards, like why a don't you why don't you
starting him? And I'm like, man, shut up. But he's
a really good player. There's a lot of a lot
of good young players here. Uh, ABBA's coming on. I
(38:33):
really really like the talent in this state. And then
like I say, I know, uh, there's a big time
coaches brother here. I can't say his name, but uh,
he has a lot of talent at his school too.
He actually sitting down the stand. So I'm gonna keep
recruiting a lot of guys from that school too.
Speaker 4 (38:47):
Malachi Wood from over at Madison Central and Richmond got
his first start. How did he do?
Speaker 6 (38:52):
He did? You know he did?
Speaker 11 (38:54):
It's his first first starting And I'm gonna tell you Tom,
old miss, I mean old miss Auburn probably was probably
one of the second best d line as we went
up against. And he was going up against number fifteen,
and you know, you see the talent there. He's six
' eight, he's three ten. He held his own for
the most part, but he struggled something a little bit.
But that's what happens when you throw a guy in
(39:15):
there in the fire, and I think, now, the next practice,
the next game, he will be better and he has
a great future. That's what the NFL tackle looks like.
Speaker 4 (39:23):
Yeah, I mean you think of a guy like Calvin
Taylor who was had that kind of size.
Speaker 5 (39:28):
He was even taller, yes, six ' nine.
Speaker 4 (39:29):
That developed into you know a friend that guy nearly
made it into the NFL himself.
Speaker 5 (39:34):
He got into some camps and that's.
Speaker 11 (39:35):
The part of the development that we have where you know,
we always say recruiting developed. I just again, I'm very
thankful to the coaches in the state of Kentucky as
football increased and they making my job easier because you know,
I don't have to go to Ohio as much. We
still will go there, but it's it's really a lot
of talent in this state now.
Speaker 4 (39:55):
Gonna get some break and as we do, we'll remind
you that when the Wildcats win, you get a free
donut from any participating Kroger location. Just scanned the QR
code that's located in the bakery, valid the day after

The physical run game that Kentucky relied on in the past.
(42:47):
He says, isn't there, how do you get back to that?
Speaker 11 (42:51):
Well, you know that's what we took. Chip train him
in the portal, and he was in the spring, he
was a downhill runner, and first week of fall camp
and then he broke his hand in the scrimmage and so,
you know, like anywhere else, you got your physical back,
you got your third down back. You got guys that
scat backs. And you know, Demi really surprised. You know,
(43:13):
Demi really been running physical and so I think with
Demi being out, hopefully he's back this week, but I
just think, you know, you got to get that guy
on your roster. And but Chip being out, who's he's
a two hundred and twenty five thirty pound guy. That's
how Ben he was, That's how Chris Rodriguez was. That's
why we went and got him. So we got a
(43:34):
kid that's committed. Can't say his name. He's a national guy.
He's went in the top ten in the country as
a running back, and you know he's a really good
running back. And so with him and some of the
young guys we got on our roster, I trust me,
we will get back to being that and we're not
far off from it.
Speaker 4 (43:51):
And you mentioned, we talked about Malachi, you mentioned Avis Selm.
You've got some guys I know you guys are excited
about in the O line prospects and then more on
the way that you can't get it.
Speaker 11 (44:00):
I can't say their names, but even like a guy
like Willie Rodriguez who is six five, you know, two fifty,
he's a physical, physical guy that well, we will stand
that and that's what our identity is. But we got
to throw the ball some too.
Speaker 4 (44:13):
Uh. Coss on the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line, it's
one eight hundred and six oh six four two sixty three,
or you can call inside Lexington at two eight o
CAATZ that's two two eight seven. Send in your questions
to at UK Sports Network on x or post on
the Kentucky Football Facebook page from Sean. He said, help
me feel better about the trajectory of the program. You've
(44:35):
been here since we start.
Speaker 11 (44:37):
Listen, we are our class right now. It's ranked in
the top I think top seventeen, top twenty. We got
some really good players coming there last year class. Who's
the top twenty class? This program? I mean I can
understand people getting nervous because you get a couple of losses.
But I know Mark Stoops, I know his pedigree, I
(44:58):
know what my pedigree is. I know what Brad White
is all about because he's been here for a while.
It just won't happen. You know, we competitive guys. We
have a lot of talent on this roster, young talent.
We have good talent that's committed to us right now.
Sometimes you just got to fill a hole and we
evaluate at the end of the season, you know what
(45:19):
we need to feel.
Speaker 6 (45:20):
But it won't be a lot.
Speaker 11 (45:21):
It just be placing like we did with one day
and wielding them guys like four guys. Because I think
we got talent. We just got to go out and
get some experienced guys at some position.
Speaker 6 (45:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (45:33):
That's the thing about the transfer portal that can help
is if you get trending the way you don't want to,
you want to try to turn it around, you can
do it quicker with the access to the portal, as
long as you get the right guys.
Speaker 6 (45:45):
Yes, sir, you gotta get the right guys.
Speaker 5 (45:47):
You can't.
Speaker 11 (45:48):
That's why the NFL do a lot of you know,
investigating background checks. They do a lot, and they go
and they find out who this guy is. When you
go into portal, hopefully somebody you had a relationship with
that you lost from high school and you knew their
parents and knew what their makeup was. If you just
taking guys that you know nothing about, you don't know
(46:09):
what you're bringing into your building. And so I just
think we got some a lot of high school talent
that is getting older, and then you go fill some
spots with like four guys, five guys to me at
the max, you don't bring in a whole bunch of
portal guys because he didn't destroy your culture.
Speaker 4 (46:25):
Let's go to the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line. Brandon
in Lexington, what do you have for Coach Meryll.
Speaker 16 (46:32):
Coach?
Speaker 27 (46:32):
Longtime lifelong fan, love what you guys have done for
the program. My question is Coach Saban always said that
he used the bench as a motivator. It feels like
we have had opportunities to do that and maybe don't.
So what are your thoughts on that?
Speaker 11 (46:47):
Well, yeah, that's a good question, my man. I actually
played for coach Saban, and I knew exactly I played
for a young coach saving at Toledo. So when I
seen him over the years, I know how he is
and how he goes about his business.
Speaker 4 (47:00):
I know this.
Speaker 11 (47:02):
I never met a coach that's gonna play guys that
can't play. You know, you know, no coaches like losing.
So trust me, we're not playing guys that need to
be on the bench. If you if you got idea
who need to be on the bench, and you and
I'm saying this respectfully, you know you sit in our
meetings and all that, and you tell me this guy
is not playing good, then I'll be like, you know what, hey, man,
I really appreciate that. And it's buddy be on the
(47:24):
bench about that.
Speaker 5 (47:26):
Yeah, Coach Sam was doing a nice job on TV.
Speaker 6 (47:28):
Yes he is.
Speaker 11 (47:29):
I thought he would be uncomfortable at first, but he's
really changed his game up. I think Miss Terry is
helping him out a lot.
Speaker 4 (47:36):
From Dwight at UK Sports Network, a couple of things
you'd like to see more touches for the tight ends.
Catus had a big catch and run I think down
at Florida, and we talked about Willie earlier, and you
tried a couple of times with the Kamari Anderson in
the game.
Speaker 11 (47:54):
The other day, Yeah, he had Kamari had two catches.
But in the last game we got some talented tight
ends and and but there's a lot of things that
go on structure, like you look at. Sometimes you can
have a young tackle and he may need some help,
you know, may need a chip here, may need a
chip there. So sometimes you just have to do that.
But the other times, you know, these guys are really
(48:16):
really I've been really impressed. Catius has been playing good.
Uh Dingo was playing really good. I had to jumper's
tail the first game. But they actually been playing good.
And we got some guys that can get down the
middle and they can run. And so you know, I
know Miss Stoops God wrest her. So she's always telling
Mark you need to tell you need to get them,
get them tight ends the ball. And she will always
(48:38):
tell him that. So he probably laughed about that the
next time. Yeah, he said, he said, Vince, you must
have been Vince, because Vince is telling you and I say, no,
I have not said not one thing to Miss Stops.
But she she was she was a football and that
like my man said, whoever said the couch about the
tight end? She's seen that, but I trust what Bush
is doing.
Speaker 5 (48:56):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (48:56):
We got we got talented receivers and you know we'll
get our Ye it's coming, trust me.
Speaker 4 (49:01):
I did not know until yesterday tight ends have their
own day. It was National tight End Day yesterday. A
bunch of big plays by tight ends in the NFL.
Speaker 6 (49:09):
You know, I didn't know that.
Speaker 11 (49:09):
My aunt text me and said Happy tight Ends Day,
and I was like, what, like it was my birthday?
But yeah, we do got our own day now. We
were a good bunch.
Speaker 5 (49:18):
And Dwight also wants you to give it to Dion
Walker at the goal line.
Speaker 6 (49:22):
Man, please do not let Deon here because he been
bugging us about that. We don't know.
Speaker 11 (49:26):
If you remember too, with the two Bowls ago, we
had him repping he was gonna play some tight end

We are back on the UK Healthcare Mark Stoop Show
for our final segment. A few minutes left. To get
to some of your questions, you can call us on
the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line post on social media
UK Sports Network or on the Kentucky Football Facebook page
from Katston. When things aren't going as well as you
would like, how do you keep players engaged in this
(53:42):
transfer portal era? How do you go about recruiting your
own guys to make sure they're with you for the
next season.
Speaker 11 (53:48):
Yes, it's a new air in college football, but it's
you know, I give our like I said, our whole administration,
our athletic department stoops. Even Mark Hill over here, he's
in a bill, you know, a lot like our guys.
We usually don't lose god guys that really like our players,
and they contribute like we did a good job keeping them.
Speaker 6 (54:12):
Somewhere else.
Speaker 11 (54:13):
It's the young guys that may think, you know what,
I may not be playing, especially on behind another guy
that's a young guy, so they may look the transfer.
But we have did a pretty good job. But it's
different now, like even when you're playing a game, you
may be opposing coach that may be talking to one
of your young guys. So we we've been pretty good
so far. And uh, I think because we have a
(54:34):
good culture. Uh, guys like coming in the building, Guys
they like being around. It ain't just the coaching, that
being around administration and like being around the cooks, and
like being around academic people. So it's still go a
long way if your culture is good.
Speaker 4 (54:47):
Best example of that, I thought was probably the second
Citrus Bowl game when there was COVID issues, had injury issues,
and you had guys who were going to go into
the portal who were still out there playing for you
because they wanted to be a part of it. And
you know, even coach somewhere all hung around the coaching.
Speaker 11 (55:04):
Yes, that's a complement of serious of stuts. Like you know,
you hear all this stuff like people saying did he lose?
Speaker 6 (55:11):
Is he this?
Speaker 22 (55:11):
And that.
Speaker 11 (55:12):
Mark Steups is a good football coach, but he's a
players coach in uh and I can actually tell you
know fans, Mark Steups loves the state. He loves the
people in the state. And when you look at our
guys that were going to other places, they could easily
set out, but they put their bodies on the line
because they really they really love Stoops and they actually
helped us win them games. So we always thankful for that.
(55:35):
And uh, you know, it just gets every year, it
gets new that you gotta keep your guys here, you
gotta constantly recruit them.
Speaker 4 (55:41):
Question from Jeff at uk Sports Networking, got some injury
issues that come with being in this league. He said,
any true freshman or red shirt freshmen that could show
up down the stretch because they have up to four
games that they could play and still be red shirts.
Speaker 11 (55:57):
Yeah, that's a that's a really good question. And we
have some guys that we purposely did that that we
saved them for, you know, the four games, to get
four games and a bowl game, and so like guys
like Willie rod Rege and some other guys we knew
they were playing day one. I knew Willy was gonna
play day one. But we have that class. This might
have been one of the best classes we ever recruited here.
(56:18):
That the guys that are freshmen now, and you're gonna
see some of them guys, you know, in the next
next two to three weeks, because they have some have
three games left, some have some have four and the
bowl game. So you know, we we got to really
get going to you know, get Bowl Elgibo and a
lot of these guys gonna be contributed on special teams.
Speaker 4 (56:36):
Some of them already contributing Jason Patterson got back out
there at running back this week, had a real nice
run that I think, yes, if a memory serves it,
it was the one that got you down into the
red zone on the last drive that they couldn't finish off.
But he had a great, great run or maybe earlier.
But anyway, how did the young running backs do with
getting the extended run?
Speaker 11 (56:58):
Well, you know you had mar and you Jason Patterson,
and I thought they did pretty good. I think at
one time Jason was averaging like nine points nine nine
yards to nine per carry and Marbles like five. I mean,
they're young guys and they throwing into a thrown into
a situation where we get two of our older guys
banged up, and I thought they really did a good
(57:18):
job to be one is a rashir freshman, one is
a true freshman. And I thought they did a good job.
I really did.
Speaker 5 (57:25):
Ben's thanks for coming in tonight, Yes, I really thank you.
Speaker 11 (57:28):
And again Tom, like I say, you know, to the
people of this state, we always gonna play hard for them,
and we're gonna keep you know, knocking down walls. But
do not get you know, panicky or nervous. We got
a couple of top team class, top twenty class coming
in here and guys are are excited to come and
play for the University of Kentucky.
Speaker 5 (57:47):
And this is the UK Sports set.
