As we go about life we inevitably move to a script, a narrative, an identity. You would think that this identity is consciously decided. But after many years on the road, the reality is that we’re shaped by the influences and expectations we have accumulated from who we’ve been with, what we’ve experienced, and messages we’ve seen/read/heard.

In this episode, we explore what this feels like and look at examples like the feeling that you are there to serve others’ needs, that no one will find you attractive in your 60s, or being stuck in work you no longer enjoy.

Key points

  • Meditation is not a weird practice; it’s paying focused attention so you can listen to what comes back to you from your emotions, mind and environment.
  • In your life, you realise that there is much that you carry or pay attention to that isn’t serving you well, like a pile of blankets you’ve accumulated.
  • Some blankets are self-imposed while many others are imposed by others/your culture/society’s expectations.
  • Finding a more genuine self is not about adding things on, but more like taking things off.
  • Four strategies that might help: Give voice to your thoughts by writing them down; notice whether they’re helpful or hindering; permit yourself to say no - in fact, use assertive language; do some self-enquiry and clarify what’s important to you in your identity, relationships and work.

Worth repeating

“(Take steps to) help the real you see the light of day, or it might remain somewhat smothered.”
