As parents, we all want to keep our children safe and healthy, but the reality is that accidents and illnesses can happen, often when we least expect them. Bringing our children to the Emergency Department can be a frightening and confusing experience. That is why we created a podcast dedicated to helping parents navigate pediatric emergencies and understand the conditions that may bring their children to the emergency room. In each episode of PEPtalk, we’ll explore a different pediatric emergency or condition, shedding light on what happens before, during and after coming to the ED. From fevers and broken bones to allergic reactions and respiratory distress, we’ll cover it all. In addition, we’ll discuss the inner workings of the hospital and answer questions like: “Why does it take so long to be seen?” “How does the Triage system work?” and “What does it mean to be seen by a resident doctor?”
A discussion of diabetes in children with pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Ian Marshall and pediatric emergency physician Dr. Kathryn Kean. We discuss the signs and symptoms, pitfalls, treatments and myths surrounding this life-changing disease.
We return to the topic of fever! This time in small infants. Drs. Prerna Trivedy and Amisha Malhotra discuss fever in babies that are less than 3 months old.
Dr. Maya Ramagopal (Pulmonology) and Dr. James Luckey (Pediatric ER) discuss what happens to children with asthma in the emergency department, in hospital and at home.
Listen in on the discussion with Dr. Niel Miele and Dr. Genevieve Gabriel as we talk about the types of seizures that happen during a fever.
Learn about head injuries in young children and teenagers. Listen to Dr. Minh-tu Do (Pediatric Emergency Medicine) and Dr. Karishma Parikh (Pediatric Neurology) discuss the management of these injuries in the ER and afterwards. In this episode, we explore brain imaging, such as CT scans and MRIs, concussion symptoms and management, and how to tell if a child has a serious head injury or a bump on the head.
Our first episode! Join me in launching this project by listening to my conversation with Dr. Patricia Whitley-Williams and Dr. James Luckey as we discuss the most common reason for children to come to the Emergency Department: Fever!

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
