Hearing Each Voice: Teaching Writing Beyond Bias

Hearing Each Voice: Teaching Writing Beyond Bias

Hearing Each Voice is a podcast that examines when teaching writing can be harmful to students, acknowledges that adopting new approaches to teaching are not easy, and attempts to help instructors find some practical changes that can be incorporated in the classroom. The first episode of Hearing Each Voice addresses why an antiracist writing pedagogy is necessary. The second episode explores how these new approaches to teaching writing can transform an individual’s classroom and an institution. The third episode takes a single assignment from a general education music class and re-shapes it to reflect an antiracist writing approach. Hearing Each Voice is hosted by Brian Moon, an experienced music general education teacher, who teaches writing from the perspective of writing across the curriculum, but not within the writing department. He is a relative newcomer to the ideas explored within this podcast, which is why more seasoned writing instructors are consulted in each episode to help unpack, examine, and apply the concepts of antiracist writing pedagogy.
