Join me as I cozily enjoy the Book of Mormon one chapter at a time, every Monday and Wednesday! I make jokes, add insight, context, and (hopefully) further understanding. Come for the goofy jokes and the casual atmosphere... stay for the neat gospel truths in every chapter.
This chapter marks the beginning of Alma's letter to his son Corianton. This son definitely needs a bit more attention than Shiblon did (Alma 38), so he spends a bit more time with him. The ultimate overarching message, though, is that you are never too far gone. You cannot get too far from God that you cannot repent.

In this, the second half of Alma's exhortations to his son Helaman, he focuses on (as the title so eloquently puts it) taking care of and preserving sacred things. The current records he's writing on, the 24 plates of the Jaredites, and even his own faith.

This episode, we read Alma describing the depths of emotion that he went through as part of his conversion. He uses such beautiful words to describe his turn towards Christ. In fact, this entire chapter is in an ancient poetic format!

This episode, we read about how Alma and Amulek's words among the Zoramites affected their entire city. Faithful Zoramites got kicked out and taken in by the Ammonites, and the wicked Zoramites started a war over it. Lots of violence happened..... but Alma's journey to the Zoramites yielded worthwhile fruit despite it all.

This chapter, Amulek gets up to chat to the poor Zoramite homies that Alma spent the last two chapters chatting with. He re-emphasizes some of what Alma said, but focuses a lot harder on the atonement! An awesome little chapter to learn more about the importance and necessity of Christ's atonement.

This episode is a follow-up to Alma's famous Alma 32 lecture on faith—the Zoramites he was teaching ask some follow-up questions (How do I plant the seed? How do I exercise faith?), and throughout this short n sweet chapter, Alma answers them.

This episode, we delve into the most beautiful lesson on faith in the entire Book of Mormon. Alma speaks to the poor and humble among the Zoramites, and shows them that it is because of their struggles that they are open to the word of God. Alma compares faith to a seed in perhaps the most beautiful (and effective) metaphor in the whole book.

Quite the mouthful, "rameumptom" is what the Zoramites call their "holy stand" that they use to "worship." I put "worship" in HEAVY quotes there. Listen to the episode to see what thoughts Alma has on their whole...... setup!

This episode, Alma faces off against one of the BoM's first recorded atheists: Korihor. He touts philosophies that atheists today still hold to! It's fascinating to see how those arguments were dealt with in ancient America.

This episode is basically Alma's diary entry. He laments not being able to do more in his missionary work, he speaks of finding glory in the lord, and he speaks of the joy he feels when he sees others' success bringing people to God.
Pretty awesome!

This episode, we read as the Anti-Nephi-Lehies (newly dubbed the 'people of Ammon,' or the Ammonies) find shelter with the Nephites! The Lamanites (spurred by the Amalekites.... again) attacked the defenseless Ammonites and so Ammon convinced the king to seek shelter among the Nephites. Things, of course, go well!

This chapter is nearly entirely a prayer of thanks unto God from Ammon. He spends the chapter absolutely GUSHING about the insane mercy, love, and justice of God and the amazing work that him and his brothers were able to be a part of. This is such an uplifting chapter.

This episode is an oddball—we see the fractures forming among the Lamanites as they grapple with the massacre from last chapter, and we see some Lamanites accept the truth as they take accountability for their sins. Also, there's some cool Law of Moses insight thrown in there at the end for good measure.

This episode is particularly epic. Not only do the Anti-Nephi-Lehies literally bury all of their weapons—but they lay down as the Lamanites attack and kill them, praying all the while. A thousand innocent Anti-Nephi-Lehies die. Just because they were SO committed to their nonviolence covenant that they would not so much as defend themselves.

This episode, we watch as Ammon and his brothers incite a spiritual REVOLUTION among the Lamanites. They convert cities of Lamanites at a time. What do those new converts name themselves? The Anti-Nephi-Lehies. They have laid their 'weapons of rebellion' against God and man down, and they are now allowing their lives to be swallowed up in Christ.

This episode, we watch as King Lamoni's Father (The "high king" as I call him) gets absolutely sledgehammered by the spirit. He expresses his willingness to give up EVERYTHING he has... just to know God. What a beautiful testimony. Also, the last third of the chapter is just Nephite geography...... thanks, Mormon.

This episode, we read the epic first face-off between Ammon and King Lamoni's father! Being the king above Lamoni, this guy certainly has sway—but of course, Ammon unflinchingly faces him, and even defends King Lamoni on his behalf. Wild stuff!
