s R. You're listening to the Best of The Odd
Couple with Chris Brussha and Rod Harker. Who better to
say this? Who better to compare Steph Curry to Michael
Jordan than Steve Freakin Kerr? Steve Kerr, who won championships

(00:45):
as a teammate with Michael Jordan, who hit a series
clinching shots in the NBA finals often assist from Michael Jordan.
And now, of course, who has coached the dynasty built
by Steph Curry in Golden State. Who better to compare

(01:05):
Steph to Michael Jordan's Steve Kerr? Here he is. I
think Steph in a lot of ways is like Michael
Jordan in that there are so many moments that they
all sort of bleed into each other and then they
don't even stand out because that's just what you expect.
And maybe that's the true sign of greatness. All right,
rob Am, I correct in my belief that this is

(01:29):
going to a stick in your craw. I just threw
up in my mouth. Chris Broussard, How damn you, Steve Kerr?
Damn you, Steve Kerr. I can't believe you would go
there and put your lips together and say Michael Jordan
and baby Steph Curry in the same sentence. Are you

(01:53):
kidding me? Steph Curry couldn't make a big shot if
you put them on a step at her. Here's his highlights,
Steph Curry, he ain't make a big shot. I was
in Cleveland when Michael Jordan won a series with a
big shot and Craig Elo hanging all over him. Michael

(02:18):
Jordan won all six finals MVPs. Steph Curry hasn't sniffed one.
Some guy named Iguadowa won Steph's MVP in the finals.
Some other guy named Kevin Durant came, stole his milk, money,
stole his team and his two final MVPs. Steph is

(02:43):
a great player. We all know that. If I want
to go watch the Hallam Globtrotters, if there was no
m NBA. Steph would be a great hallm globetrotter, half
court shots. He would throw buckets of confetti behind the
back pass out of the bowns. He can do all that.

(03:08):
Michael Jordan is on a pillar by himself. Please, Steve Kerr,
I get it. You wanna make Steph Curry feel good.
You want to validate him. You want to punch your
ticket and say, well, I play with Michael so I
could be the one to say you're great too, And

(03:29):
it all rolls in together. No, it doesn't. It doesn't
roll in together, not one iota, not one sintilla, not
one grandma soul. No way, no, how does Steph Curry
and Michael Jordan belong in the same sentence other than

(03:51):
Steph Curry brought three pair of Michael Jordan sneakers today
at foot locker. That's the only time I'm those two
going the same sentence. Are you done? Turn off the
freaking music, pecking the gurb musicallex You're losing your touch.
I don't care if it costs me in tightes tower

(04:12):
of tripping. All done, rob Us, all right, then turn
it off, turn it off? Turn off? All right? All right?
Rob Parker you just I mean, I knew it was
gonna set you off. I didn't expect music off and such.
Of course, you're right in that Steph Curry is not

(04:33):
as good as Michael Jordan. Okay, we all know that.
But if you listen to what Steve Curse said, all
he said was he's he's like Michael jordans in that
you get used to You see so many great things
night in, night out, that you get used to it.

(04:56):
That's all he said. And you you took that and
ran ten miles with it. You got to rip steps
once again. Just you just took it too far. And
I'm gonna point out because you went so far, I'm
gonna go far, and I'm gonna point out a lot

(05:16):
of ways that Steph Curry is like Michael Jordan. Now,
he's not his clutch, of course, Michael Jordan's arguably the
most clutched by ever. All Right, he's not the goat
and not in that conversation, all right, I get all that. However,
like Michael Jordan, Steph Curry has changed the game of basketball.

(05:43):
Michael Jordan changed it. Everybody wanted to be like Mike
and go Iceol and even even long time NBA, people
became obsessed with quote unquote athleticism. If you can jump
out the gym and you're fast and quick like Michael Jordan,
you can be a great player. And you might not

(06:05):
never mind that you don't have the skills and the
fundamentals and the basketball IQ of Michael Jordan, but you
got that athleticism. Oh, you might be the next Mike
all right. And Steph changed the game too, all this
shooting from forty feet, thirty five feet, all these logo threes,
Trey Young and all these youngsters coming in like that.

(06:28):
Where the step We're just like we were looking at
who's the next m Jay. They're saying who's the next Staff?
And the next kid that can shoot the rock from
thirty five feet they're gonna be saying he's the next Staff.
And another similarity was not a prodigy. We all know

(06:52):
the story about that's the thing, man, And that's why
I will give Lebron credit that he was able to
live up to being a prodigy. We knew about Lebrin
in seventh eighth grade and he lived up to it.
But many of the great ones just come out of
nowhere kind of. And m J we all know the
famous story he's cut as a sophomore. Now people don't

(07:14):
understand it. He was cut from the varsity as a sophomore. Okay,
so we played JV as a sophomore. It wasn't like
he was cut from the JV team or the sophomore
team couldn't play that year for the school, But he
was cut from the varsity. He wasn't supposed to be
anything great when he went to North Carolina. A lot
of people didn't even think he should go there because
he's not gonna play much, and he developed into the

(07:37):
greatest player ever staff of course Davidson need I say more,
seventh pick in the draft, m J. Third pick in
the draft, so not a prodigy, just came out of nowhere,
work hard. How about this change the way defenses Like
Michael Jordan made defenses adjust to him, and he had

(07:59):
to pay so much attention to Jordan that it opened
up things for everybody else. How do you think Steve Kurr,
who couldn't create his own shot, John Paxton couldn't create
his own shot, got those big shots, m J. Shame
with Steph the defense changes. They gotta pick you up
at half court now because of this dude's range, and

(08:21):
also he led a dynasty. He was the leader of
a dynasty and he didn't have to go anywhere else.
He went to a franchise that was on the outs,
you know, the Bulls. The Bulls made the playoffs. I
think about three years, two or three years before they

(08:42):
drafted Michael Jordan. One time they made it. Then they
missed it like two or the next two or three years.
Then drafted Jordan and the rest is history. Steph Curry,
we all remember that little Golden State team Baron Davis,
Stephen Jackson that upset Dallas all that. That was about
two or three years before they drafted Steph Curry and

(09:02):
that was their highlight. And Steph gets there. They missed
the playoffs a few years, they draft Steph and the
rest is history. Didn't have to go anywhere, build it
from scratch. So there are some similarities. Rob Parker, I
didn't need music. I didn't get music, Alex. You know
he favored you because I guess he liked Rob g

(09:24):
as a Steph hater too, Rob Parker. But I think
I just dropped some knowledge. I think I educated some folk,
including my co my partner, my co host anything to
say no, or do I just go to the callers. No,

(09:45):
I ain't buying it. You made some cases, but they
were flimsy at best. Flimsy flimsy. That's Righte did he
not change again? But that's not what Steff was. I mean,
what does Steve kerry? He was talking about talking about anything?
You were saying it? Yes, he was. I mean, come on, man,
talk about greatness. A guy was six to oh in
the finals, won all finals, MVP. Everybody told me that

(10:09):
Michael wouldn't have won without Scotty. I don't remember Scotty
winning any finals MVP. Steph has zero step doesn't have
a signal shot the moment in the post seat. He
couldn't win without Mike. No, I'm just talking about it.
Had Durant hasn't won without Steph. I don't know he
went without Steph. I'm saying is because they got James
hard and they don't look like they're about to win anything. Yeah,

(10:30):
all right, we'll see. We'll wait till better be guy reback,
Better get that boy vaccinated. This this little this little
version of the nets who I picked like you, But
I'm disappointed in them. I'm watching them closely and it
ain't enough. Last night they came back from seventeen on
the road against Dallas. That wasn't that was nothing like

(10:52):
No Dallas got Luca don Chi and what else? Okay,
Dallas is under five. I don't know. It's funny because
when they were up three to one on the Cloud
they meet a good team too. That was a good win. Left.
Congrats the nets Wi being a good team. Finally, Gas,
the good team has been rolling into your housing in
Rob Parker's language, taking your lunch money. Chicago rolled into

(11:13):
Brooklyn and snatchhoe lunch money. They did a Patriots to
your bills to you, you ain't do Jack, So get
it together The Net eight seven, seven ninety nine on
Fuck Can We get There? Be sure to catch live
editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob
Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific on

(11:33):
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. Hey what's up everybody?
It's me three time pro bowler Le Barrington and I
couldn't be more excited to announce a new podcast called
Up on Game? What is up on Game? You asked,
along with my fellow pro Bowler, t J. Hushman, Zada
and super Bowl champion. Yep, that's right, Plexico Burris. You

(11:54):
can only name a show with that type of talent
on it. Up on Game We're going to be shared
our real life experiences loaded with teachable moments. Listen to
Up on Game with me, LeVar Arrington, TJ. Hutchman's Out
of and Plexico Birds on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcast
or wherever you get your podcast from. Tom Brady already

(12:20):
won a super Bowl last year, and now he gets another. Accolade.
Sports Illustrated awarded him with the prestigious twenty twenty one
Sports Person of the Year award. Might not be quite
as big as it used to be, Robbed, because you know,

(12:41):
print journalism just isn't as dominant as it once was,
but still a big deal. And he won it. It's
his second time winning it. I think it was two
thousand and five, rob g check that out. I think
he won it in two thousand and five. Yep, two
thousand and five. But he wins it again and Robbed, look,
I got no issues with it. I think he is

(13:05):
one of you know, he had a great year. He go,
he starts off twenty twenty one by winning a Super
Bowl with the franchise that hadn't been to the playoffs
in twelve years, that had gone seven and nine the
year before he got there, and he led a changed

(13:28):
the culture without an off season, remember, because of the pandemic,
and they go ahead and win the Super Bowl. And
now he at least at this point, we still got
a few weeks left in the seat in the year.
But to this point he is the current front runner
for the MVP award according to the odds at and

(13:53):
he wasn't the Super Bowl at forty three, and he
is the current front runner to be obviously the oldest
MVP in the history of the NFL if he wins
it this year at forty four years old. So a
very great year for him. Obviously, the narrative of breaking
away from Belichick and all that plays into it as well.

(14:16):
I think there are a few others though, who I
would have even put ahead of Brady. I can think
of two, but I'm I'll save those. I want to
get your view on this robe. Now we know why
sports illustrators going out of business? Can I start there?
Aren't they still in business? Well, I'm saying going out

(14:37):
of business. Come on, man, pass Tom Brady. Stop it. Okay,
I got it. He won the super Bowl. It was great.
He hadn't won. He hadn't won this thing since when
the fifteen years ago? And now the only problem is,
and Chris, you mentioned there's some other people. But let's
stop the presses. How about show had old Tani who

(15:02):
did something that we haven't seen in a hundred years.
How about since Babe Ruth walked the earth like dinosaurs
and right and it's extinct. A guy who could play
pitch and bat and be at star status. I mean,
what are we talking about. Didn't he just win the

(15:22):
MVP unanimously and I was gonna say, yeah, I agree
with you. Didn't he also just win a prestigious Commissioner Award,
which is given only four achievements, Chris, that that we've
never seen like every fifteen twenty years. They don't even
give it out every year. I mean, this is where,

(15:43):
you know, places lose sight of the significance going on
in sports and they just want, you know, the sexy
pig who people are talking about. Everybody knows Tom Brady,
Show Hayes not from this country. He's not gonna sell
US MAT magazines even though they did it, you know,

(16:03):
with Jeremy Lynn and they put him on the cover twice.
That that was again trying to capitalize sports Illustrate has
been all over the place. They did. They put Jeremy
Lynn on the cover Chris twice in two weeks. No,
no other athlete has ever had that happen, Michael Jordan,
Muhammad Ali, and so on and so on. But Jeremy

(16:24):
Lynn did it. And now show, hey talk about living
up to your billing. Chris came from the right, came
to the United States, all this talk, he was heard,
he was this, he was that he struggled to remember,
and he lived up to the hype. He did it.

(16:45):
I agree with you, and I'm gonna give credit to
my first thing's first co host, not that he's the
only one saying that you're saying it, but I had
he We talked about it today on the show. He
brought up old Timey and I do think old Tiny
should have won it. You know how how hard I
wrote for him as MVP, and that was nothing. You

(17:07):
the whole year, everybody the whole year. Yeah, I mean,
obviously he was unanimous. So I'm not trying to claim
some special wisdom for thinking he should have been. But
I strayed. You remember I was talking about uh lad
La Junior, right, because you remember he was close to
a triple crown until the final week. Had lad Junior
won the triple crown, you you would have thought you

(17:28):
would have voted for him, had you had a vote. Yeah,
it was, it was because that done. I mean it's rare,
but you know it's been done. Nobody's done it, Chris,
since since like uh Miguel Cabrera about twenty years ago,
and before that it was another like twenty I mean,
it's like it doesn't it's like once or for years

(17:49):
or once or twice forty years nobody had done it
since baby played in the twenties, right and Babe Ruth. Look,
obviously you can't take anything away from Babe Ruth, but
rob the years that Babe Ruth pitched, he pitched. He pitched,
you know, like full time for like five years, and

(18:09):
he never hit more than twenty nine homes. But in
any of those years, he one year he hit eleven. Okay,
So it wasn't like we think of Babe Ruse. He
pitched and he hit, we think of him as pitching
and then also hitting fifty sixty homers, right, No, he
didn't start really just raking them from the plate until

(18:33):
he became a full time hitter essentially, So oh tiny
hit forty six homers that was like third in the league,
and pitched and went nine in two with a three
point some three point one ERA, better era than Garrett Cole.

(18:53):
I mean, so it was a big time you know,
money guy. Yeah, so I agree, I think show hey
and I and you right, he's not as sexy. He
didn't win. They didn't even get to the freaking players, right,
they didn't get to the playoffs. I get it. And
that's Look, it's unfortunate, Rob, but that does because most

(19:15):
fans are casual fans, you know, and most fans are
our only Even on our shows, especially on TV, let's
face it, right, we only talk about the big you know,
the big names individually played the team we like eight
or ten people. Let's just real talk, real talk, and

(19:37):
that is what it is. And baseball unfortunately doesn't get
a lot of talk anymore on these shows. And so
I think, yeah, there's no doubt. Tom Brady on the
cover versus show. Hey, Brady's gonna sell a lot more magazine,
It's gonna create a lot more buzz. So I'm with you.
I think it should have been show. Hey, I'll throw
in another one, and I would have put ahead of Brady.

(19:59):
And again I'm not I'm not that you just think
there are other people exactly. And the second one, Rob,
I would have said it is Jannis because in this
age and you say it, a lot of super teams,
he shunned that. He overcame that and didn't didn't build

(20:24):
a super team state with the franchise he had built,
stayed with players who were really good but not superstars,
and won a championship and did it. Rob. Here's the
other thing. He didn't just win a championship. He didn't
just average twenty two points. And you know at nine
and nine rebound he was phenomenonal. It was one of

(20:48):
the most dominant finals performances we've ever seen, no doubt.
And then the richest story Rob, you know, like his
tough upbringing in Greece and his family, you know, being
on the streets and all that stuff, And I mean,
that's a story for you. So I think I think
it should have been show a one Yannis too, and

(21:08):
then Brady. Yeah, I can't disagree with Yannis. I mean
he bucked the trend of the new NBA. Yea, Chris,
you talked about the numbers he put up. Remember the
sun drop up too all in the NBA Finals, right,
and we most people thought it was over. You remember
that everybody was crowning Chris Paul Do you remember all
the pent all the flowery talk and oh this is

(21:29):
great for Chris. I mean, oh, it was so premature,
it really was. It is where he's gonna rank. And
I was involved, Oh, this makes him the fifth greatest
point guard ever, so I had him higher, like, yeah,
it was all right. And then the other part and
the last part, Chris is Yannis also did it by

(21:51):
you know, uh eradicating one of his demons, the free throw.
Ye with the performance he put it in the game closing, right,
and the series closing game where he made what was
it seventeen out of eighteen or seventeen out of nineteen whatever,
it was seventeen out of nineteen seven horrible from the line. Yep,
you're right, I think that's impressive. I totally agree, and

(22:16):
that's why, like I said, Yannie. I put him ahead
of Brady Um Interesting. Yahoo wrote a column and they
talked about other people that could have won it, and
they mentioned Sunny Lee and uh Simone Biles. Now Lee
is one who filled in for Bills after she dropped
out of the Olympics, or you know, at least the

(22:38):
few events that she did drop out the all around competition,
and I think, you know, I look, she did what
she felt she needed to do. Obviously, she was going
through a lot, and you know, she even talked about
later rout like you know, gymnastics had the USA Gymnastics,
you know, had this huge sexual assault scam, right, and

(23:00):
so I get she was going through a lot, But
I would not say that her dropping out of that
competition was something that would make her sports Person of
the Year. That I That's all I'm saying, Like, I'm
not gonna critically did what she wanted to do, right,
But why would that make her sports Person of the Year.

(23:22):
You know what I'm saying, Like, I just don't get that.
So I wouldn't have I would not have considered her
for that award. No, I got it. Some people might say,
if you're giving out of the word an award or
Medal of Courage Chris or something. Then I could see
that like having to overcome what she's been through. Right,

(23:44):
But I'm with you, Like in sports, the three people
you mentioned to me are obvious, like like they did
stuff that people just didn't think. What's gonna happen? Right?
Be sure to catch editions of The Odd Couple with
Chris Brussar then Rob Parker week days at seven pm

(24:05):
Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the
iHeartRadio app. Let's Stay in the in the West, Rob
Damian Lillard. Now, there's it's a mess in Portland, all right. Well,
they just firing office off Priz. Yeah. Yeah, they just
fired their president, Neil O'sha for creating a toxic work environment. Uh.

(24:28):
They aren't playing well under their new coach, Chauncey Billups
first year coach, so CJ. McCollum. Their second best player,
Jess was diagnosed with a collapsed lung and he's out
in definitely. So prayers up for him a big time. Uh.
And now there are reports that Damian Lillard would like

(24:48):
to play with Ben Simmons and that he wants a
two year, one hundred and seven million dollar contract extension
at the end of this season. Now, Damien did come
out today, Rob and shoot down those reports. Yeah. I
don't know if you mentioned Woad like what he robbed

(25:10):
you it was a wold report that he was spinted
to yet, okay, because there were other reports, like, there
was plenty of reports, So he was he was shooting
down the contract extension talk because that's what Woad was reported. Well,
what he was basically saying was there was a meme
going around of Donald Trump and Mike Penn's shaking hands

(25:30):
and it says it's a woe and Neil o'sheay ripping
Dame Lillard on you a way out there or something
like that, and he kind of co signed to that meme. Okay, Okay, Well, um, anyway,
here's the thing about the Ben Simmons thing, Rob, this
is probably if Dame you know what, probably that report is, Yeah,

(25:55):
Dame talking to somebody. Yeah, I'd like to play with Bens.
We could be good. You know he's good. Yeah, Yet
that don't mean you ready to trade your one of
your good friends and your backcourt mate for it. You
know what this up last night Chris that he'd have
some explaining to do because that nobody else you could
trade in order to get Ben Simmons off. That is

(26:16):
actually what he put out there. He meant c Jack
right and see that. But like my my point is
that he would like this is the report he would
like to play with Ben Simmons. That could be anything
from him going into Neil O'Shea's office and being like, look,
get us Ben Simmons at whatever cost it takes, We'd

(26:36):
be great with him, or it could be as something
as simple as Dave, what you would you a lot
of talk about Ben Simmons, you know, coming to Portland.
Would you would you like to play with him? Oh? Sure, yeah,
big great defender. Yeah a lot to play with him,
you know, not even really thinking at that moment, who
would who would have to be given? You know, the

(26:56):
trade idea of it, where he could have said, under
no circumstances do I want to play with takeoff? Right?
He could have said that, right. I think it leans
more towards the ladder of sure, he's a great player, Yeah,
play with Ben. Okay, Then the contract extension, Now that
makes sense that he would want that, right, Why wouldn't he?
He wants to stay in Portland. Sure, he wants as

(27:18):
much money as he can get. Here's my take, Rob
on this whole situation. It is time for the Portland
Trailblazers to consider trading Damian Lillard. And when I say consider,
I mean you ain't got a rush and out of
you don't have to get rid of himbody this year's
trade deadline or anything like that, but start putting it
out there what you we're willing to trade Dame, what

(27:41):
you're gonna give us. And I'm not just like there's
talk old Ben Simmons, that's Philly wants Dame for Ben Simmons.
Well maybe it would be Ben Simmons and somebody else,
or maybe it's more like, I'm not setting my sights
if I'm Portland or Ben Simmons. If that's the best
I can get Ben in somebody else, some draft picks, whatever, fine,

(28:03):
but I'm open to whatever the best offers are out there,
and I think start to rebuild. Dame is a great player.
He's gonna be first ballot Hall of Famer. He was
just named top seventy five of all time. Whether you
agree with that or not, he was officially named right,
I agree, but he was a named officially, So he
is and all that he has not been able to

(28:28):
get them out of the Western Conference. And if he
hasn't been able to do it in his prime, he's
thirty one. Now he's having his worst season in years.
I'm gonna sign him up for fifty plus million in
his mid thirties, you know what I'm saying. Right, So
it's been great, Dame is great and ideally well be

(28:48):
able to trade him, you'd be able to trade him
to some place where he can compete for a championship.
But I think it's time for Portland to be like, look,
we gave it our best shot. We got a new code.
That one has a new philosophy. Chauncey ability gonna set
a new culture. Let's get some young boys in here
and build it around Chauncey's culture and see what we

(29:12):
can do. So what do you think? So? So so what?
I hear your point. You make a compelling argument. I'm
not gonna deny that. But what do you think Portland
will do in that? It's not a desirable place. You
got a guy who's a star who wants to be
in Portland, do you know what I mean? Like Chris

(29:34):
that you might not be able to get you to
hear you. I hear me, and I say this that
scare you if you're Portland. If you're Portland, no, because
you make it. Obviously it's not a destination franchise. But
think about it. They've always had a great play They
had Clyde Drexler, know they have. They had Rashid Wallace. Uh,

(29:57):
I mean he was surrounded by Buck Williams, Jimmy Jackson,
Scottie Pippen, Steve Smith. You know, like you, they've had
great players and that was a great team around Rashid,
bondsy wells Um and now of course you got Dame.
So they've been able to get good players there. And
I just think you got you tested. You're right, there's

(30:18):
no guarantee you get another Dame Lillard for a long time.
And there is something to be said Rob for being
relevant and good. Right, they're not gonna win a championship
this way, but Rob and I know it, we are.
It's all about the title, right, utass never won a championship. Rob,

(30:39):
And they're a great franchise, but you know, but you know,
like you can't sit here and say they're not a
great franchise with when they had Carl Malone and John
Stockton and now they're they're not. I don't know that
this team's gonna win it. I would say, no, you know,
I don't mean this year, I mean ever, but with
Rudy Goldbert and Donovan Mitchell and and might kind of like,

(31:01):
they're gonna be good. They're gonna be relevant. They're gonna
be in the hunt year in year out for a while,
and there's something to be sad for that. Am I wrong?
I mean, I get it. The goal is the championship, right,

absolutely business at the end of the day. So if
I say let's go in the tank and get a
bunch of young guys and we're gonna be bad for

(31:43):
three to five years, is that good for my business
model or is it better? It might be good if
if three years from now you get that guy right
well and all, what if you mean? We might look
at the Sixers. Trust the process, remember that Chris and
and now we're five years into it or whatever it is.

(32:03):
Are they Are they gonna win a championship? Maybe? The
problems right now? That's what I'm selling. They're good, they're relevant,
they're relevant, they sell out the place, you know what
