Speaker 1 (00:01):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
All right, he was the Cats, Yes he was. I
will tell you who he is next. Good morning, this
is Fox Sports Sunday on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
He's Bucky Brooks.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
I'm Andy Furman, and we are broadcasting live from the
ti raq dot com studios. Tire rack dot com will
help you get there and on match selection, fast free shipping,
free road has a protection and over ten thousand recommended
install this tier raq dot com the way tire buying
should be here. He is the man himself, the legend,
(00:36):
the legend, the footballer. He should be in Canton, Ohio.
There's no doubt in my mind. My partner and friend,
Bucky Brooks. Hello, Buck, how are you?
Speaker 1 (00:45):
I'm good Andy. I'm apologizing advance. I'm a little under
the weather, so the voice is a little greeny. You
may hear a call for two. But I had to
show in for you. I had to show big, big
things going down to Cincinnati. So I had to show up.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Well, I'll tell you what you've done it Because you're
you're an athlete, you got guts, You're a gutsy kind
of guy. You know you play, you play the game.
Hurt and that's what you're doing right now. And today,
by the way, is Selection Sunday. And I was thinking
about this book for a second, and I don't want
to make you talk too much because I know you
want to conserve that, But you know what about big
(01:17):
days in sports? Selection Sunday is like a big day
in sports. I can't pick maybe five days on my
one hand that are really big days in sports.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
And see if you agree.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
The NFL Draft I'll count that as a big day
in sports, the first day of the NFL season, so
that's two. A Selection Sunday is three, and maybe the
NCAA Championship night in football and that Monday night in basketball.
So those are the five big days in my mind
in sport. What of the big days are there in
the world of sports that you kind of like pencil in?
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Those are the five that I have, So.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
I mean, you kind of nailed a lot of them.
When we talk about going all the way back to
my childhood, this March Madness thing has always been a
big deal for me growing up in ACC country. It
not only is watching the ACC Tournament because it used
to just run Friday through Sunday, so teachers would bring
the TV into the classroom and allow all the young
kids to watch at least that twelve o'clock game, which
(02:14):
was everything really and then yeah, you take it over
the course of the weekend, and as soon as that
championship game and the ACC would end, it was Selection Sunday,
and so seeing where your favorite team was going to go,
filling out the brackets, having competitions with your friends even
within the house. To me, as much as I love
all the other stuff related to football, there's nothing that
(02:36):
kind of compares to what basketball has in March madness.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
You know, it's funny.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
I can't believe that willed the TV in for that
at the center when I was like in the sixth grade,
fifth grade, where it may have been the teacher wheeling
the TV for the World Series when the World Series
is played during the daytime, but basketball not. But you're
a basketball country, and I'll tell you what did there's
some heat going on in North Carolina because they may
be on the outside looking in for the NCAA FE
when they announce it tonight. I don't think in North
(03:01):
Carolina's going to make it.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
Yeah, there's a lot of conversation about my tar Hos
and whether they'll make it. Being the Homer looking at
it through Carolina Blue lenses, I am saying that everyone
points to the Quad one record, they're one to twelve
versus Quad one teams, But a lot of those teams
that they lost to one, they were one score games.
And you can rattle off the list of your Alabama's,
your Auburn is, your Florida's, you played Kentucky, you play
(03:27):
I mean, you played heavy hitters. And so if they
don't make it, what I wonder is will Hubert Davis
and Carolina shift their approach when it comes to scheduling,
because everybody likes to see these marquee matchups early in
the year November December, go to Hawaii playing the Maui
Festival in Malui Classic and all that. But if you're
(03:49):
not going to be rewarded for playing tough games even
though you're losing, you might as well schedule a slate
of cupcakes and see if you can get in with
a twenty eight or twenty nine win record.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Yeah, he's in some heat.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
There a basketball coaching staf of North Carolina's on some
hot water. And you know it's funny because last year
North Carolina State had a Cinderella run in the in
the tournament, the a SEC tournament, they went to the
NCUBLEA Tournament, and now they fired the coaches the other day,
and that, like Brenda brought up some ideas in my mind, like,
you know, how many years does a coach get.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
To turn a program around?
Speaker 2 (04:21):
And now I think with this portal situation, you know
that time factor is a lot so smaller because you
could turn it around in a year. For example, you
know the University of Cincinnati and that's in my neighborhood. Okay,
four years Wes Miller and you know him because he
coached out of North Carolina. He played for North Carolina.
This is fourth year they're not going to go to
the NC Double A Tournament again. Four years in a
row not going. However, they've already fired the coach at
(04:45):
Minnesota after four years. The coach at you taught to
four years UNLV. You know a lot of coaches have
been given that time and they have gone. So I
got to believe the only reason Wes Miller is still
here is because of that buyout deal. Because I don't
think the school has enough money or wants to spend
that kind of money to buy him out. I mean,
and the athletic threat to said about two weeks ago, Yeah,
Wes Miller's my coach. He'll be coaching next year Cincinnati.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Yeah. No, what's interesting you bring up Wes Miller. Wes
Miller is the coach that some Tarrhell fans still pined for.
The job. Came down to Wes Miller and Hubert Davis,
both guys that played at Carolina, both guys who have
factions of the base that adore them. And when Hubert
Davis was selected over Wes Miller, there's a huge part
(05:31):
of the fan base that ruse today that Hubert was
picked over him. So to hear you talk about Wes
Miller's struggles in Cincinnati, to me is interesting because you
say he never has made the NCAA tournament. He's on
the verge of potentially getting fired if he doesn't turn
around next year. Yet if you go to Chapel Hill,
there's still people who believe he was a better option
(05:53):
as the coach over Hubert Davis. And so it just
tells you one man's trash is another man's treasure. And
as it relates to Hubert Davis, Hubert Davis goes to
the National Championship Game, misses the tournament. The next year
takes him to the either Sweet sixteen or the Leader.
I think it was Sweet sixteen because I was there,
and then they may be out. That probably buys him
(06:15):
another year because during the season it came out that
he signed an extension. Yeah, but the pressure is on
him right now. People do not have time to wait
for you to build a program. You need to build
a championship team and then the next year build another
championship team, which is completely different than the way college
basketball used to operate.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
You know it.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
Really it's funny because the NCAA Tournament obviously the drowlby
Tonight Selection Sunday, but they have this tournament in conjunction
with Fox Sports, which is called the Crown. I think
it's March thirty first to April second, and there's a
good chance maybe University of Cincinnti will get invited to
the Crown because it goes to the team that is
the closest one that didn't get to the NCAA Tournament
in each conference, and I think Cincinnti because at a rate
(06:55):
for that in the Big Twelve But my question is this,
the portal opens next week. There's a real good chance
that these kids, Cincinnati's basketball team are so downstrided and
so disappointed, they're gonna bolt and go through the portal,
So they may not be able to field the team
if they invited, if they get invited to this Crown tournament.
It's kind of crazy. Really, why couldn't they push the
(07:17):
portal further back? Because the people who organize this Crown
should have realized that the portals could affect their tournament.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Yeah, you know, it's interesting, Andy, Like, people always talk
about the NCAA and regulation and all the rules, but
the one thing that is lacking in today's era is
some governance making sensible decisions that relate to the game.
It is ridiculous that the portal will open as March
(07:46):
Madness is about to get off. All the teams that
are in there, all the coaches that are in there
now have to make decisions on what they want to do.
If I play players on a national stage so everyone
can see my top guys and the tournament, I run
the risk of them if we had a difficult season,
they may not even show up and play. And if
I'm a hot coach who has an opportunity to use
(08:08):
my current situation as a stepping stone to go somewhere else.
I may be out. All of this is crazy. They
should kind of put a pause on all movement during
the entirety of March Madness and let things start once
March Madness can cluse, so then everyone is kind of
on a level playing field when it comes to transfers
and hiring coaches and all of that.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Perhaps you could help me with the portal, because you know,
we talk about it, but exactly specifically, what is it
to say? I say, I'm a basketball player at North Carolina.
Season's over, we don't make the tournament, I'm disgusted about playing.
I want to transfer. So what do I do? I
go to the athletic threat to and do it the
coach and say, coach, I'm putting my name in this
portal And what does that go to a major clearinghouse
and every college basketball coach gets a list on their
(08:50):
computer of like every name that's in the portal, height, weight,
year and what he averages and what school he's at.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Is that how it works?
Speaker 1 (08:57):
I mean, similarly, I mean you just talked about a
huge portal database where you enter with your numbers and
all of that and just your n C double a
eligibility number in those things, and coaches are always scouring
the portal to see who's in there. Normally, Andy, we
hate to say it, but there's been some conversations between
(09:18):
players and intermediaries from other schools. They kind of urge
or encourage guys to get in there. Other times guys
are just frustrated with their situation and jump in regardless,
there's always someone on watch looking to see who's in
there and looking to see if the people, the players
that are in there are upgrades or benefits for the
(09:38):
current situation.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Okay, so how does Coach A know that Coach B
is going after the same person in the in the portal?
Speaker 3 (09:46):
How does that happens?
Speaker 1 (09:49):
You know? No, you just kind of assume, like once
they jump into portal, like it's all uh, it's all good.
But what typically happens the coach that is interested in
the player that's in the portal, We'll call the coach
from the school where the kid is leaving from, because
what you want to know is the background, Why is
he leaving, what kind of kid is, how's he going
to impact our locker room. What are the things that
(10:09):
he can and can't do on the floor, What would
you do if you were me? Would he fit? Does
he not fit all of those things? Or anchory Like,
as much as we like to think that coaches are adversaries,
they're in the same game. They all work together, and
a lot of times their friends, and so they try
and help friends out when they tell people like, yeah,
he'd be a good fit for you, he just wasn't
a great fit here. Oh you don't want to touch him.
(10:31):
He has X, Y and Z going on. There are
a lot of conversations in background resource sys done.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
You know, it's funny because if I'm a coach right
now and I want to coach college basketball on a
Division one level, and you mentioned North Carolina, mentioned Cincinnati.
If I'm West Miller and I have a choice to
go to either one, I'm not looking at the conference
that they're in. I'm not even looking so much at
my salary because the salary is somewhat the same similar
across to what a couple of million that's what you're
gonna get. I'm looking at the alumni base because you
(10:58):
need a strong alumni with big wall. Let's to help
you get players. I mean, look look at Saint John's
and what Rick Bettina was done. Yeah, he's a great coach,
there's no doubt my money, he's a great coach. But
there was a story in the New York Times from
page New York Times the other day about this alum
who basically spent something like four million dollars of players
on the roster of Saint John's.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
That's what you gotta do.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
You got to get a guy who's a crazy, fanatical
alarm with money.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
That's what you need to do.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
You do have to have support, and it's not only
financial support in terms of nil and pay for play,
but if administration really supporting the vision that you have
for the program, meaning hey, we want to keep it
at a high level, if we're going to compete at
a high level, we need to make sure that we
have X amount of funds available to be able to
do that. Part of Carolina struggles this year, to give
(11:47):
you a solid example, they could never secure big Man.
And the reason why they couldn't secure a big Man
is because teams in the SEC had a bigger financial
commitment from their schools and they were able to out
bid some of those players. As much as we like
to think that players make decisions on the brand and coaches,
right now, Andy, it is all about the bag. How
(12:09):
much are you going to pay me determines whether I
go to your school or not. I can like you
as a coach, but if the dollars and cents don't
add up, I'm going to the other situation, and in
two you get all the way in the game and
we eliminate the facade of it being amateurism or you know,
college basketball as opposed to the pro minor leagues. The
(12:32):
better chances you will have on being able to put
together a team that can compete and compete at a
high level.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
Okay, so, Bucket Brooks's coach at University of North Carolina,
and you're recruiting me, I'm a high school player.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
Whatever.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
Although high school players are basically secondary now, people just
want to coach good guys from the portal. High school
players are ridiculous that no one goes in that direction.
But just say you're recruiting me, and you call me
up to say, well, here you go, we want you
to come to North Carolina. I'm going to give you
a hundred thousand dollars, So I'll get right back to you,
because the University of Virginia is could have give me
a buck and a half. I mean, is that what
(13:04):
it is? They bargain back and forth and then you say, well,
I'll get back to the end of the day. I'll
let you know if I.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Can match that. Is that how that works right now?
Speaker 1 (13:11):
One hundred percent, either you do it or pretty much
everybody has representation now. So the college agents who are
also going to be their pro agents are negotiating deals,
and they're negotiating deals with college general managers. That's why
we've seen the rash of general managers that have been hired.
Particularly in football. There has to be someone that controls
(13:33):
the purse string, someone that is aware of the quote
unquote salary cap and how much money we have allotted
to spend on the team, and certain positions we'll go
up to x amount. Other positions we'll say, hey, man,
we're good, we can't go up that high. And it
is literally NFL NBA like in terms of how you
building your team. You got to understand how to manage
(13:55):
your money to make sure that you have enough talent
to win. But you also don't bust a budget.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
Now, would I be correct to say this, If you
are a general manager of a school that is a
basketball only school and does not have football, you may
be in better shape than a school that has football
and basketball that really doesn't have a strong alumni base.
For example, in the metropolitan area of Cincinnati, University of
Cincinnati Big twelve. They have football and basketball, but they
(14:20):
have to compete with professional sports in the city, as
well as other colleges in the area. Xavier University, which
is like seven miles down the road from Cincinnati, which
is in the Big East. All they have is basketball.
They may have an advantage because the alumni base is
all for one, one for all, and that's basketball.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
There's on football.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
Yeah, I mean, I think that is an advantage. Just
look at Saint John's. You just talked about Saint John's
being able to pay money. The owner of Noble is
an alum, and as you talked about someone giving four
million dollars, he certainly stepped up to the plate gave
them significant money to be able to get it done.
In fact, Rick Patino has credited him for you know,
(14:58):
we couldn't put us off without him being a part
of what we're doing. The first thing that coaches are
doing is they're identifying who has the deep pockets, who
can help us get this done. And then once they
do that, they make sure they bring them in, they
make them an integral part of the program. The only
issue that you have when people start paying money for players,
they want a big say, they want to have a voice,
(15:19):
they want to be included. That can mess up your
program if the head coach doesn't know how to navigate
those relationships with the boosters.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Here's the question of the day. Say I win the
lottery tomorrow, I got Bootkoop money.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
All right?
Speaker 2 (15:35):
My school comes to me, they find that out, It's
written up that I won the lottery. They want me
to write a couple of checks for the alum for
the basketball program. I'm saying to myself, are you kidding?
I mean, what do I get it? What do you
get out of it? Certainly some satisfaction a little bit,
But why would someone would you do it? Why would
anybody in the right mind give money to a kid
(15:57):
to support him and then maybe after a year, after
the money you give him, he bolts to go to
another school, and now they've got NBA play rush. Just
the other day, Dwayne Wade is, give me three million
to nil and Marquette. He went to mar quent I
don't get it, and it gives three million. And after
a year, the guy who doesn't maybe sit in the
bench and play, wasn't happy, didn't like the coach. He's
(16:18):
gonna pack up and leave a let another school. Why
would you and would you Bucky Brooks do it?
Speaker 1 (16:23):
No, I wouldn't do it because you don't get a
return on investment. You don't get a tax break because
if he goes directed to the collective, there's no benefit
for doing it. The only thing that you get out
of it is bragging rights. I'm good on the bragging
rights in North Carolina, Like I am cool. So yeah,
someone else would have to fund it because what we're
(16:45):
doing is we're paying unknown commodities. You know, I'm paying
on an eighteen year old player that I don't know
if he can step up and play well at the
next level. Yet I'm already willing to commit six figures
or seven figures to him. Nah, I'll pass. I just
think that's as a poor strategy for the finances. It
just doesn't make sense to me.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Can you imagine me picking up some money, writ in
the check for a kid, and next thing you know,
a week later, he gets picked up for duy.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
That's your guy.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
I mean, I mean, I just you know, eighteen year
old kid, anything could possibly happen.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
I don't get it.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
I mean, I'm so happy to hear that you know
you would not do it because I wouldn't do it.
And maybe people look at me, say, you're crazy. Why
wouldn't you don't you love your school whatever it might be. No,
I'll buy a take or go to a game. That's
basically what I'll do. But other than that, I just
don't understand the mindset. And you know what, all these
guys that do step up.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
And put the money in.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
I'd love to see someone do a story and interview
these guys say why do you do it?
Speaker 4 (17:40):
Well?
Speaker 3 (17:41):
What kind of satisfaction do you get? Or is it
just ego?
Speaker 2 (17:43):
Because you know that basically you built the program, not
the coach. It's your program. You did it, and as
you say, they're gonna have a lot of say so
in it. He'll go to the coach and say, you know,
I don't like this kid. I don't want him on
the team. I don't want him there.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
I'm sure there's things like that that happen.
Speaker 1 (17:58):
Oh what I present to do happened. And I think
the Phoenix Suns owner Matt Ishba, I think he was
a big contributor to Michigan State before he joined the NBA.
It is a huge ego situation. Is one where maybe
you weren't able to kind of be the star player
on the court, but now you've crushed it in business
(18:20):
and you want to get a little feel of what
it's like to be a star well, being a major
contributor at major booster, having a major voice and some
input that gives you that feeling that has been lacking
since your teens and twenties. That's why these guys are doing.
They may love the university, but a lot of it
is to scratched to itch. They were never able to
scratch as players when they were coming up.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
Do you said the guys that never played the game,
and they were like me, when you went to the park,
the only reason you got chosen was you brought the ball.
That's how I got into the games. I brought the
basketball to the park and they chose me in because
I had the ball.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
Well, I mean, it's a smart strategy. If you have
the ball, you got the power.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
Right there you go. He's Bucky Brooks. Get him on Twitter,
get him on XE, whatever you want to call it.

selection Sunday for sure, and we talked about that in
the first segment.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
There's going to be a bit of a buzz.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
But again I would have to say, Bucket Brooks at
the NFL takes center stage and this week it wasn't basketball,
it was free agency. Was unbelievable. I'm shocked. I really
am shocked that people go bananas. I guess because your
team is being built through free agency, probably even more
so than the draft. But your bigness shock in free
agency us for what was yours.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
I would say the biggest shock is Geno Smith being
traded away to make room for Sam Donald to come over.
And I know Sam Donald had a terrific season with
the Vikings, except for the last two games where he
struggled when they really needed him. But Geno Smith has
been a two time pro bowler for the Seattle Seahawks,
and even though they were removing some of the weapons,
(21:25):
to me, he'd been a model citizen, great leader. He
has shown massive growth as a player. So now you're
moving on from someone who has been proven to be
effective within your environment to catch you a lot with
an unknown. And Sam Donald still is an unknown. And
even though you're bringing Clint Kubiak with him, someone who
was his quarterback coach or passing game coordinator in San
(21:45):
Francisco when he was backing up and trying to repair
his career, it's a huge risk. And you not only
bring him over, but you remove DK Metcalf and you
bring over Cooper Cup, who I love Cooper Cup at
thirty two years old. Though Cooper Cup has been injured
a ton and for fifteen million dollars, I wonder are
you gonna be able to get a return on your
(22:06):
investment for him to be one A, one B with
Jackson Smith and jigbuk Up in the Pacific Northwest.
Speaker 3 (22:13):
Amazing.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
I think that Sam Donald basically, we have to say,
probably has been the biggest prize thus far in the
free agency rolling around carousel because three years, one hundred million,
like one hundred point five million, fifty five million guaranteed.
But he's no kid. He's twenty seven years old, fifteen.
He's going to be on since the Jets made him
a third round pick, the third pick in the twenty
(22:35):
eighteen draft. And honestly, you have to say that Sam
Donald right now, this is truly the team that he
could be the face of because he never has been. Yeah,
last year in Minnesota, but it wasn't really his team.
JJ McCarthy got hurt and that opens the door right now.
And people aren't talking much about this to JJ McCarthy
because he was the Vikings' first round pick in twenty
(22:55):
twenty four but now the job is his. He's nailed
it down because Sam Donald's gone. And I think that's
the biggest story than having Sam Donald go. Yeah, Sam
Donald's a question mark. Can he give you thirty plus
touchdowns and maybe five picks again next year?
Speaker 3 (23:08):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
Maybe it was the offensive Minnesota, But what about JJ McCarthy,
A can he get it done? B can he get
it done after that injury?
Speaker 1 (23:16):
Well? I mean, look, I think there's a lot of
mystery towards what the Minnesota Vikings are going to do.
For as much as we're ready to hand the job
to J. J. McCarthy, the buzz is out there about
Aaron Rodgers and his preference to go to Minnesota as
he looks to just completely follow Brett Forre's career, you know,
to go from Green Bay to the Jets, Jets to
the Minnesota Vikings to see if he can find a
(23:38):
way to I won't even say Salvage's legacy. I would
say enhance, upgrade, fortify his legacy with the championship. The
Minnesota Vikings are certainly talented enough for that to happen.
But it's just interesting and if it's not Rogers, well, yeah,
You're throwing a lot on a rookie quarterback coming off
an injury who hasn't played it all.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
You know, really wouldn't be a bad move. And he's
kind of gone public. Aaron Rodgers had to say that
Minnesota would be his team. He's waiting several reasons. Number one,
he could be a tutor to JJ mccarth. Think that
JJ McCarthy waits in the wings that Aaron Rodgers he
comes in there and does something well. And number two,
I don't think much has been said about this. He's
playing a dome. That's a tremendous advantage. I think playing
(24:19):
in a dome in Minnesota.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
I mean it is for sure, Like I mean, with
the ball flying farther in the dome as opposed to
dealing with the inclement conditions. If you are a quarterback
that doesn't have the greatest armister, yeah, that can be
a huge advantage. But I don't think that's an issue
necessarily for Sam Donald. I think the competition is more
the thing. He steps into an environment where he doesn't
have what he had at Minnesota. Look, he had an
(24:44):
all Pro wide receiver on one side. He had a
Pro Bowl caliber receiver Jordan Addison. On the other side,
he had a pro bowler at tied end and TJ.
Hockinson a pro bowler and Aaron Jones behind him and
a rock solid offensive line. He doesn't have any of
those things in Seattle, and so this is more like
the situations that Sam Donald has stroken in previously. So
(25:07):
Klint Kobyak is gonna have to do a wonderful job
on the whiteboard scripting and crafting play designs that allow
Sam Donald to overcome some of the deficiencies that the
Seattlecrs currently have in their lineup.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
Well, you know, you talk about Cooper Cup, and he's
a great player, knows doubt about that, But for them
to get him for three years for forty five million,
I think that's somewhat of a steal in the National
Football League right now. But I want to ask you,
I got some stats here. I want to compare in
your mind. Dk Metcalf stats to Cooper Cup. Okay, DK
Metcalf six years in the NFL, all right over sixty
(25:41):
three hundred yards and he had what forty eight touchdowns
as opposed to Cooper Cup six hundred and thirty four catches,
seventy seven hundred yards and fifty seven touchdowns in one
hundred and four games. I think the whole deal is
similar statistics, no doubt about that. Age is a factor there.
But more than that, it's all money. Look at the
amount of money. They say from Metcalf to Cooper Cup,
(26:03):
that's why it was done.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
I believe.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
Oh, I'm sure money. You certainly played a factor in it.
But let me also say that all numbers aren't created
equal because style matters. Cooper Cup in his prime was
a guy that was interchangeable on that offense. Remember the Rams.
One of the reasons why they rose to prominence when
Sean McVay first took over. It was Robert Woods, Brandan Cooks,
and Cooper Cup and all of those dudes could play
(26:28):
at any spot on the field. So it allows Sean
McVay to freedom to kind of bounce around the lineups,
change where people lined up, so you never could get
a beat on them. You don't have the same luxury
to be able to do that stuff in Seattle Jays.
And you can play inside and outside. But he's best
on the inside, Cooper Cup is and his best on
the inside, he can't go outside. The difference is the
big play element. DK Metcalf can produce the big plays
(26:51):
on his sheer talent and athleticism alone. Cooper Cup is
a refined technician who sometimes you have to draw those
things up to me. It puts more pressure on Clint
Kubiak to be in his bag to draw up big
play opportunities as opposed to, hey, let's put the ball
out there, Sam hit the open man and those that
freedom is just going to naturally produce enough big plays
(27:13):
for us of me. Move forward.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
Okay, Now the question is does Sam Donald make a
difference in Seattle? Will they be a contender? I look
at that division. Yeah, I don't know if they upgraded
themselves or not with Sam Donald, but it's a tough division.
I don't think San Francisco is going to be down
and out as they were last year. I think they'll
be a lot better. They had a lot of injuries
last year, so I think if the forty nine ers
(27:35):
are going to come back, the Rams were tough.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
The Rams almost beat the Eagles.
Speaker 2 (27:38):
Right, so I would have to say that although Seattle's
made some moves and they plugged in some holes, I
don't know if it's enough.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
Okay, so make it. Let's make it as simple as this.
Let's look at quarterbacks because the quarterback driven league. If
we had to rank the quarterbacks in the NFC West,
where does Sam Donald stack up? Matthew Stafford is number one?
Speaker 5 (27:59):
Right?
Speaker 1 (28:00):
Have Caler Murray, brock Purdy and Sam Donald? Where we
put in Sam Donald amongst that? Maybe he's three three
with a question walk right? So that's what it comes
down to. So despite all of the moves, they may
not be a better.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
Team's unbelieve it.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
Now, speaking of better teams, does Gino I gotta play
for number one? Gino Smith will in five mat the
Raiders a better team. They had no quarterback whatsoever. But
what does he do for the Raiders?
Speaker 1 (28:28):
So what he does? And I want to make sure
people understand, I'm not saying that Geno Smith is the
next coming, right, that he is a top five quarterback
or whatever. But what I will say is he is
kind of the culture setter for what the Raiders want
to be. When you look at the success that Gino
Smith had under Pete Carroll, look man. He threw for
over eighty six hundred yards, he had fifty five touchdowns,
(28:51):
only twenty one interceptions and was a two time pro bowler,
and he not only repaired his career, but he helped this
team transition after Russell Wilson and continue to win, which
was surprising in Las Vegas. It now gives them a
calming force, a calming influence at quarterback. It gives them
an adult in the room, someone with the talent to
(29:11):
be able to make the place. They have to upgrade
some of the firepower on the perimeter. I would look
for them to take a big time running back, someone
that can take twenty to twenty five carries and command attention,
so maybe Ashton jens S six is in play, and
then look for them to continue to try and find
White House. To me, it's a good move that makes
them competitive. Still a tough vision for them to close ground,
(29:32):
but they are a far more competitive team than they
worked before Geno Smith arrive, no.
Speaker 3 (29:36):
Doubt about that.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
Now, speaking of the quarterbacks, let's talk about Kirk Cousins.
It was a big question mark with him, and now
that Atlanta Falcons say they're not going to release him
and the deadline was yesterday, said they didn't release him.
He's going to get ten million and that's a roster
bonus for the twenty twenty six season, and everybody's going
crazy and going ballistic, and he wanted to be out.
I think it's a good deal, I really do, because
they want their quarterback. I guess he's going to tutor Nix.
(29:58):
I guess at quarterback. I don't know what he's going
to do. But the point is that why wouldn't they
release and why wouldn't they trade him? But again, you
have a young quarterback in Atlanta, and I guess that
you look at Kirk Cousins.
Speaker 3 (30:10):
He's the guy that can maybe tutoring. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
I have no idea why Kirk Cousins was not let
go and why you want to pay the guy ten
million dollars. He's going to be the most expensive backup quarterback,
not only in the league, but maybe an NFL history.
Speaker 1 (30:23):
It's only temporary Andy, and there's not a more favorable
bargain chip than a quarterback in the National Football League.
Speaker 3 (30:31):
Well just about is the starter, right, Pennicky right to start?
Speaker 1 (30:34):
Yeah, Penis is gonna start. But we talked about around
the league. Everybody right now feels great about their quarterback situation. Right.
We just talked about J. J. McCarthy in Minnesota, we
talked about the young players. The Giants don't have a
quarterback yet. The Cleveland Browns don't have a quarterback yet.
So it's smart for the Atlanta Falcons just to sit
and wait and see how the Carolseale ends up. These
(30:54):
guys can get these draft picks and people talk about, oh,
you can get Tyler Shutt, and you can get uh
Will Howard and Dylan Gabriel and all these other guys,
but they've never played a down in the league. As
you get closer to the regular season, executives get fidgety
when it comes to their team and are we good enough?
Do we have that? That is when Kirk cupk Cousins
will have an opportunity to be moved. It only takes
(31:15):
an injury to change the narrative. Remember in Philadelphia when
they drafted Carson Wentz, they had Sam Bradford on the team.
Someone gets hurt. I think Teddy Bridge would have got hurt.
They traded Sam Bradford to Minnesota, got some draft currency
that was valuable and allowed them to continue to build
the team and the championship team at that That's why
you hold on the Kirk Cousins, man, don't worry about
(31:36):
the roster bonus. You can work that out with offset
language in the contract to get that money back to me. Look,
it's a no brainer. Keep him until you have to
move on from him. Doesn't make sense to move on
from him right now.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
You know, I was looking.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
I looked at his stats, and I want them to see,
like how long he's been in the league, how much
money he made. He was franchised ted twice by Washington
that was like almost like forty four million dollars. That
was anything a fully guaranteed three year, eighty four million
dollars deal from the Minnesota Vikings. He got re upped
twice over three years in Minnesota sixty six mil, thirty
(32:10):
five mil. Then he got his most valuable contract from
the Falcons last year. Then he tore his achilles tendon.
By the way, he has only won just one playoff
game in his career. So they talk a lot about
Kirk Cousins, and I guess they like him. He's a
good guy, puts up a lot of the audis, but
hasn't done anything. When you think about it, he hasn't
done anything.
Speaker 1 (32:30):
Now he hasn't, but when you're desperate, and the option
is I can have a mid level starter, or I
can be horrible with a young guy that can't play
or an old guy that can't play. Give me the
mid level starter, because at least I can win some
games and have a chance to get into the tournament.
That's what you're playing for. You're not thinking about championship.
(32:50):
Everything has to go right with Kirk Cousins. But he
certainly is good enough to get you into the tournament,
which is a start.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
Well, we'll see what happens.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
I mean saying that there's a good chance that Kirk
Cousins will not be on the Atlanta Falcons roster come
opening day.
Speaker 1 (33:06):
No way, won't be there. We'll see, no way. And
I don't think the mentorship is really something significant because
as much as we like to talk about that the
old guy nurturing the young guy, that relationship will not
be one that it can be the mentor type of
the mentor situation, because Kirk Cousins still thinks he can play. Normally,
(33:27):
if you can have a veteran guy that's nurturing little man,
he knows he can't play. His job is to make
sure that the young guy play. He lives vicariously through
the talents and achievements of the young guy. Kirk Cousins
doesn't have that. He still wants to add a ball.
There you go.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
He's fucking Brooks on May the Firmerwee of Fox Sports

the top of the hour. This is Fox Sports Sunday.
He is Bucky Brooks. I'm Indy firmh And we went
alive from the ti iraq dot Com studios and a
little bit of a quiz buck. Are you ready for
the Bucky free agent quiz? Last week free agency started
a lot of moving around the NFL. We're gonna throw
out some names to you about free agents. You tell
(34:45):
me good fit, bedfit, what do you think, surprise whatever
it may be, anything you want to say about them?
Speaker 3 (34:49):
Are you ready? Are you ready?
Speaker 1 (34:50):
Yeah? Let's do it.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
First up, defensive tackle was a twenty twenty one third
round pit Philadelphia Eagles. He was on the defensive front.
His name is Milton Williams. It goes to the Patriots.
Your thoughts on that four years one hundred?
Speaker 1 (35:03):
Mil I love it because the Patriots completely revamped their
defense with veteran players. They want to get back to
the blue collar style they're serving them will under Belichick.
Mike Rabel knows the recipe for winning in New England.
Milton Williams helps him get that.
Speaker 2 (35:16):
Yeah, Mike Rabel, I'm not surprised if Rabel going back
on the defensive side.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
Of the ball. Okay.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
Wide receiver Chris Godwin returns to the Tampa Bay Bucks.
Speaker 3 (35:24):
I was surprised. Three years sixty six mil.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
Good money, not tremendous money, twenty nine years of age,
had a strong start last year. But now he had
that ankle surgery, So we'll see what happens with his speed.
Maybe cut down, so maybe he realized that he better
stay home.
Speaker 1 (35:40):
Yeah, sometimes it's about being a legacy player. He and
Mike evans Man Mike go down there is the two
best wide receivers in franchise history. You get a chance
to finish what you started after being a draft pick
there coming out of Penn State. To me, it makes sense.
People are talking about the money that he left on
the table, but remember Florida's no tax state, so a
lot of that money did he's he's keeping, whereas if
(36:01):
he goes out of state, he's not gonna have the
same kind of return on investment.
Speaker 3 (36:04):
Well, I forgot about that no tax day in Florida.
Exactly right about that.
Speaker 2 (36:08):
Josh Sweat goes to the Cardinals four years seventy six,
Mili edge rusher pretty good. They want to add that
pass rushing deal in Arizona. I think he's gonna help
him do that. Not a bad move. I wouldn't think.
Speaker 1 (36:23):
I like it, don't love it because.
Speaker 3 (36:28):
Bless you.
Speaker 1 (36:29):
Sorry, Joshua doesn't get to bring his homies with them.
He doesn't have the lucky having Jalen Card and all
those other guys inside commanding attention. He now becomes the
number one, which is a little different than being the
complimentary pass rusher. We'll see if he can hold up,
but unless they bring somebody into Arizona to kind of
help him to offset some of the pressure. And it's
different being the number one pass rusher as opposed to
(36:51):
being the guy that people don't pay attention to.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
Okay, this is a good one because I think there's
a lot of conversation right here. This guy was looked
at as a bust. He was called to bust with
the Jets and the Panthers. We're talking about Sam Donald.
He goes to the Seahawks, and look, I think the
Seahawks will put a lot of pressure on him because
they wanted to thirty six million a year. But the
offense in Seattle and maybe on way off base, but
(37:14):
I think that has nothing even close to the weapons
that he had in Minnesota, So it's gonna be really
rough for him. And now all of a sudden, he's
deemed as the starter. It's his team has mentioned earlier
he's going to be the face of the Seahawks. Can
he get it done? Is it a good move?
Speaker 1 (37:29):
Yeah? And he comes down to you if Sam Donald
is a truck or a trailer, meaning is Sam Donald
talented enough to carry the Seattle Seahawks or is he
a guy that needs the team to carry him. In
Minneapolis with the Minnesota Vikings, look, he was a trailer.
They carried him along. He was able to just kind
of manage the game and do his thing. In Seattle,
they need him to be the driving force of the offense.
(37:51):
Different role, different responsibility. We'll see if his game is
up to the challenge.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
Okay, now let's stick with him for a second, because
they got a new offensive coordinator with Clint Kobe is
not going to be very similar to the offense that
Kevin O'Connell had in Minnesota.
Speaker 1 (38:04):
Yeah, they're all cousins and they have variations and similarities.
They all come from the Shanahan McVeigh tree, so there'd
be some similarities and they'll build around it, but look,
it's not going to be exactly the same because the
personnel isn't the same. The personnel matters more than the tactics.
Jimmy's and Joe's over ex'es and O's.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
There you go, okay, Justin Reader safety was a key
figure for the Kansas City Chiefs defense. He leaves three
years thirty one Mili going to the New Orleans Saints.
I scratched my head. Why on God's green Earth will
you do that? Obviously the an has to be down
the road. The green Backs the money, but still, in
all why would you leave Kansas City to go to
a team that really and tuly I don't even think
(38:43):
they have a chance to make the playoffs next year?
Speaker 1 (38:45):
The Saints, Well, money certainly has a factor. And if
he wants to play with a veteran defense Tyron Matthew
cam Jordan, this team has super Bowl aspirations. Now whether
we believe in them doesn't matter. Internally, if they believe
that there's fotball team, he's as we. But ultimately it
came down to the money. I'm sure the money was significant.
He took the deal. He's already won super Bowls. This
(39:07):
is about like, hey man, let me go get the
bag and complete my career, all right.
Speaker 2 (39:11):
I think this is a great move, and there wasn't
much publicity on it. Maybe there wasn't a city of Detroit,
but a cornerback. DJ Reid's going to the Detroit Lions.
He's got three years to forty eight mil and he
was at the number two corner for the Jets. I
think this could be really good for the Detroit Lions.
Speaker 1 (39:26):
Could be great for the Detroit Lions. And the reason
why I could be great for the Lions. He's a
true man demand corner and in their scheme, they want
to leave their guys isolated on the island. DJ Reid
is as good as it comes. He was overshadowed with
Sauce Gardener in New York. The football world will finally
get a chance to appreciate his downless.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
Okay defensive tackle Jonathan Allen cut after eight years with Washington.
Maybe he's too old, I don't know, but he's going
to the Vikings three years, sixty mili. Maybe it's the
age factor that maybe I don't know. But not a
bad move.
Speaker 1 (39:55):
Either, No, not a bad mood. I like it. The
reason I like it is because Brian Flores has been
able to stemy opponents using smoking mirrors. When then you
get legitimate talent, two time Pro Bowl, that makes a
difference up front.
Speaker 3 (40:06):
All right, here we go.
Speaker 2 (40:07):
Bucky Brooks tells you how one quarterback could be a superstar.
That's next on Fox. Oh why did he sign with
this team? Well, that's coming right up. We'll tell you.

The way tire buying should be on a wonderful Sunday
because it's selection Sunday. Bucky Brooks, how are you on
this selection Sunday? I know you're a little bit under
the weather, but I'm here with you. I'm here with you.
I'm giving you.
Speaker 3 (40:43):
Hope and medication if needed.
Speaker 1 (40:46):
Medications I'm needed. Look, I maybe under the weather because
my tar heels are hanging on the line, and maybe
it's the nerves and anxiety and not really sickness. Maybe
I'm just I'm just having a tough time thinking about
tar Heels may not have an opportunity to dance this year,
and that would be very disappointing for a kid that
grew up watching the Tarios always make the tournament, always
make their way to the sweet sixteen. This would be
(41:06):
very disappointing.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
Well, I tell you, it's a way of life in
North Carolina. I would think basketball almost like Kentucky, almost
like Kentucky.
Speaker 3 (41:14):
Really Kentucky. Show those over.
Speaker 1 (41:16):
There, Yeah, I mean they talk about Tobacco Road, and
you think about the schools that are their Duke, Carolina State,
Wake Forest, all those things that great traditions.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
I want to throw in another school because this score
really got me right in the gut. I'll talk about
the MEAC Tournament and people say, why would you follow that? Well,
my buddy Eric Martin coaches South Carolina State. He played
at University of Cincinnati, was Bob Huggins's assistant for sixteen
years at both West Virginia and Kansas State. They played
Norfolk State yesterday. They lost sixty six sixty five on
(41:49):
a free throw and that I mean his named Eric
Martin was named coach of the Year MEAC and that's great,
but I was hoping they go bowling and I say
bowling to the tournament this year, I don't think they're
going to get it done because of that loss in
that me at conference. I don't think more than one
team is gonna get going to the NC Double A
tournament there. But what a year he's had, and uh,
(42:10):
maybe bigger and better things for Eric Martin.
Speaker 3 (42:11):
He's one heck of a.
Speaker 2 (42:12):
Coach and a heck of a guy really is, and
was a pretty good ball player too when he played
for Cincinnati.
Speaker 3 (42:17):
So we move on.
Speaker 1 (42:18):
But uh, look, man, look it's tough because you know,
it's amazing how you can dominate the entire year and
then you get into the we get into the tournament
and what you need is just to get a win
over teams that you dominated before.
Speaker 3 (42:31):
Right, you were eleven and three in the conference South
Carolina State.
Speaker 1 (42:36):
Yeah, I mean that's just it's amazing how that plays out.
But you talk about sending a shout out to Eric Martin,
I'm gonna sending a shout out to a childhood friend
that has really been one of the best coaches UH
in college basketball for a long time, Lavelle Molton. He
is the head coach at North Carolina Central. UH. North
Carolina Central was able to make their way UH to
(42:58):
the NC Double A Tournament by winning by winning it
and so this is another opportunity for me to see
someone that I grew up with who has become one
of the best coaches that we've seen and really a
dominant program that he's created down in Durham.
Speaker 2 (43:10):
And you know who played for North Carolina Central One
of my favorite players of all time, number twenty four
in the Boston Celtics, Sam Jones, who used the bank shot.
He played for North Carolina Central.
Speaker 1 (43:21):
See Sam Jones? What are you doing?
Speaker 3 (43:23):
Tim Jones? He was great, He really was.
Speaker 2 (43:24):
You know, here's a story that I wish they were
more of. Okay, this is what I love. And we
talk about guys that get fired, and I'm always saying
to myself, you gotta wonder, do you think that if
a coach gets fired, he would hope that the team
would do poorly next year with the following coach? You know,
I think down deep inside everybody feels that way. You know,
(43:45):
if you're in radio, and you get fired and someone
takes your place. You really want to see that guy
who takes your place sitting in Yorkshia, you have success.
Speaker 3 (43:53):
I don't know, Maybe you do. Maybe you're a different
kind of breed.
Speaker 2 (43:55):
I just think there's a lot of people that wish that,
but they'll never go public with it. However, there is
a story here where someone said something very similar.
Speaker 3 (44:04):
And a day after agreeing to.
Speaker 2 (44:06):
Terms with the Seattle Seahawks, ex Dallas Cowboys defensive end
DeMarcus Lawrence, he didn't hold back his feelings about the
Dallas Cowboys. This was an interview Thursday. He was an
interview with Briannenhauser of Hawk Blogger. How the hell I
got that? I don't know, but I got it Hawk Blogger.
Lawrence was taking a swipe at the Dallas Cowboys. Now
(44:28):
after he was talking about the move to Seattle. Lawrence
he spent eleven years, his first eleven seasons in Dallas.
He said, quote, Dallas.
Speaker 3 (44:36):
Is my home.
Speaker 2 (44:37):
I made my home there, my family is there, and
I'm forever going to be there. But I know for
sure I'm not going to win a Super Bowl there,
So yeah, we here.
Speaker 3 (44:48):
How do you like that. I love it. Maybe he's right,
maybe he's wrong, but he took a shot. You know.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
Sometimes people can say, button you live, keep the pie
hole closed, move on, move on with your life, and
forget about it. But he I love that, And maybe
that's the reason why, more so than even money, why
he left Dallas.
Speaker 1 (45:06):
I think it's very difficult to win in Dallas because
of all the distractions. You know, not only people talk
about ownership and those things. I would say, just the
distractions of being the start of the city. Anyone who
has been to Dallas, anyone, if you ever talked to
a Cowboy, they just talk about the brand and how
lucrative the brand is for you off the field, and
you have to make a decision or you have to
(45:27):
dig deep when you are picking players for the Cowboys
to make sure that they love the game and not
love what the game can bring them. In Dallas, the
temptations are there where. Look, man, you can be a
mediocre player and make a lot of money for a
long time there, or you can be a champion and
really make the Kings ransom. But how many people want
to do the extra stuff that is needed to be
(45:49):
a champion. That's why it's so difficult in my mind
to build a championship team there because more than any
other place, you really have to know that the players
love ball.
Speaker 2 (46:00):
So basically, when I'm hearing that, you got to give
guys like Jimmy Johnson really a lot of credit for
what they've done because they won there.
Speaker 3 (46:07):
And Barry Switzer he won there. So that's how difficult
it is.
Speaker 2 (46:10):
And I think that when you got an owner like
Jerry Jones looking over your shoulder, it doesn't make it
any easier.
Speaker 1 (46:15):
No, it doesn't. But what we want, man, we want
everyone to be all in on the process of winning.
When I mean all in, all into. Every move that
we are making is done with the intention of putting
our team in Super Bowl contention. So every player, every
coach that we bring in, shoot, even the people that
we bring in to work in the cafeteria, everybody has
(46:37):
to have a championship mindset that their job is the
most important job for this team, this franchise to get
over the hump. And if you don't have that, you
can have a hard time winning because it's so competitive,
not only in the NFC East, but the Commanders and
the Eagles really becoming two of the heavyweights in the NFC,
but just the competitiveness of the league. So you got
to be wired, right. It takes a village to make
(46:58):
this happen. And I'm not all waking man Stead. The
Cowboys have as symbol to type of village that would
allow you to kind of chase titles.
Speaker 3 (47:05):
You know, it's funny you mentioned that. I tell you why.
Speaker 2 (47:07):
I say that because I would think, and I work
with some professional sports teams, you would think that everybody
has the same goal, and that goal is to win,
and to win a championship. Now how hard you work
to get there's a different story. And again, I live
in the greater Cincinnati area, and the media in this
town hell bent on attacking Mike Brown, the owner of
the Cincinnati Bengals, saying, ay, he's cheap, which is false
(47:29):
because obviously, if you look at the salary structures in
the National Football League, the Bengals are about in the middle.
Speaker 3 (47:35):
They stay like right about in the middle.
Speaker 2 (47:36):
But more than that, now they're saying that he doesn't
want to win, and I find that ridiculous. I mean,
here's a guy pushing ninety years of age, and I
would think before all is said and done. He would
love more than anything else to win a Super Bowl
ring before he hangs it up. I think that everybody
who gets involved in professional sports wants to win. Maybe
I'm wrong, I think he does. Maybe they don't know
(47:59):
how to get there, maybe they don't do it the
right way, But I think he wants to win. Don't
you think everybody who puts on a uniform wants to win?
Speaker 1 (48:06):
One hundred percent. He wants to win, and he's been
so close to tasting it. Think about them. What how
many times are the Bengals going? Three times they've gone
to the Super Bowl, and how close they've been being
able to hoist the Lombardi Trophy the last one against
the Rams. I mean, if not for a bad call
on Logan Wilson, you can say that they should they
should have won it and down the stretch too. Yeah.
I mean, like this is a franchise that when they
(48:29):
are loaded, when they do make the right decisions, they
certainly are capable of winning it. And right now they
have the personnel to be able to do it. They
will be built, I say, in a weird way. Right,
so everyone talks about to be a championship team. You
have to build your team through the trenches. The Bengals
are testing that theory by really building the team around
(48:49):
the perimeter. I mean, it's more of a seven on
seven team where you're throwing it all over the r RD.
T Higgins, Jamar Chase, Joe Burrow. You're kind of doing
it where you're gonna outscore. People don't know if that's
a sustainable model, but I understand why they want to
do it because teams have a tough time defending the
Cincinnati Bengals, and if they can get the defense up
and going, they can use a blueprint and a recipe
(49:11):
that served the Indianapolis Coats will when Peyton Manning was
the quarterback for them for so long.
Speaker 2 (49:16):
Well, I see that, and I think that obviously now
the heat is on through the media and fans that
they're not going to sign Chase and Higgins, and they will.
They'll sign those guys. You know, I'll tell you why
they're going to sign them, because they can hold out
as long as they want.
Speaker 3 (49:29):
But who has all the cards.
Speaker 2 (49:30):
The Bengals have all the cards, and Jamar Chase still
has another earnest contract, so there's no problem. I mean, really,
and truly they will be signed, just as you said
early on today that Kirk Cousins probably will not be
with the Atlanta Falcons. It takes time. It doesn't happen overnight.
And I think the Bengals are playing cards with these
players because they can.
Speaker 3 (49:49):
They can. They hold all the cards.
Speaker 1 (49:51):
They hold all the cards, so they can dictate the terms.
They can figure out how they wanted to operate when
it comes to look, we're gonna build a team, We're
gonna have this financial structure. We're gonna put this salary
cap plan in place to make sure that we not
only can compete in the short term, but the long term.
Duke Tobin has talked about that, Mike Brown has talked
(50:12):
about it like they want to win and they want
to do it right. But you know, it looks on
that terms and they want to win. There's a lot
of money, and so they have to figure out how
to kind of move the cobbs around and all of
that and to make sure that they can afford it right.
Speaker 2 (50:28):
I want to get back to the situation here with
the with the remarks made in the Dallas Cowboys situation,
because not only did did he come back and say something.
But all of a sudden, now with Lawrence, he got
the Dallas Cowboys on Twitter, and I'm not so certain
that's a good move. And I got to ask you
the coaches, I mean in the high school level, I
(50:50):
guess they do that. At the college level and the
pros do the coaches say, hey, guys, you know you're
probably better served if you don't get on Twitter. It's
a good more X whatever you want to call it.
It doesn't do you any good. I mean, someone should
tell that, maybe to Kevin Durant and Lebron James, but
they never did. But the linebacker of the Dallas Cowboys,
the Marviy and Overshawn, He's coming off a.
Speaker 3 (51:10):
Pretty good rookie year.
Speaker 2 (51:12):
He posted this on X Cowboys versus everybody, And then
all of a sudden, the linebacker Michael Parsons, he came
back with more pointed words to when we say, this
is what rejection and envy look like. This is some
clown s blank, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (51:27):
You know what that is.
Speaker 2 (51:28):
So what is the upside of doing that? I don't understand.
Do you have that much free time to play on
X to do that? What good does it do? And
why the coaches or someone on this ball club or
any ball club say it doesn't do you any good, guys,
it could only hurt you.
Speaker 3 (51:44):
I mean, what's the upside of doing that.
Speaker 1 (51:48):
Well, the difference is in college, you can control the
police dead right near you. Rich Rodriguez in West Virginia
told his guys, I don't want you dancing on TikTok.
That doesn't portray the image that we want to have.
If we're gonna be a tough, physical team, I can't
have you dancing around. Whereas in the pros they're grown ups,
they're grown in I can't tell them what to do
(52:08):
away from the facility. I can advise them and say, hey,
that's probably not the best look. But at the end,
you're talking about twenty plus arrows who have the ability
to make decisions on their own in terms of how
they want to speak out and those things. It is
silly and it does kind of create extra attention. But
also know this, it's the off season. From the media standpoint,
(52:30):
we're desperate for any story. Oh, we will pop out
any content that we can use and create and kind
of spin off. So that's all it is. By the
time we get to the regular season, it will mean nothing.
Speaker 2 (52:42):
I've always thought this and maybe on way off face
and maybe the fact that you played in the NFL
there is something like this. I don't think it's a
coach's place to tell a guy a pro at least
get off X, get off this. But I think they
if ball clubs would hire an ex player, make him
a director of a player relations something like that, and
(53:05):
he could relate to these players or maybe a guy
who play with these guys and say, guys, it's not
the right thing to do. So this way, the coach
gets himself off the hook. It's not his problem. But
a former player who basically now works for the ball
club a director of player relations, perhaps he's.
Speaker 1 (53:22):
So they already doing that. Well, so here's the thing,
and they already have that. The NFL created years ago.
In fact, when I was playing in Kansas City in
the mid nineties, it used to be called player programs,
right player development. You had a guy that worked with
the team and he was kind of the liaison from
the players to anything and everything in the building. He
(53:43):
is the guy that you could confide in regarding any
of the issues or concerns that you may have. A
I just moved into town. Who can I talk to
to try and find a place? Is there a relative?
Do you know a bank that I can go to?
All these other things? Continuing education, Hey, I want to
finish my degree. Can you help me with those things?
So there's a player in place that is now called
player engagement, And so a lot of times they will
(54:05):
take a former player, they will put them in that
role because sometimes there is a connection that former players
have with the current players where they trust in them
because you've walked in their shoes. And that guy can
become the confidant. He can become the chief advisor, the
one that helps them kind of make these decisions, and
he can, you know, sometimes take information from the coaching
staff when they say, hey, man, can we get him
(54:26):
to chill? All right? Coach, let me just talk to
him and just kind of let him understand why that
wouldn't be the best move. So that is in place.
But I'm be honest with you, andy, grown men, you
can't control them. Once they lead a facility like that,
that's what they do. You know, you can handle the
x's and o's and all that. But once they're on
their own time, you can hope and pray that they
(54:47):
make good decisions when it comes to representative team in
the franchise.
Speaker 2 (54:50):
Well, you know, it's funny you mentioned that because I'm
going way back before they built that new stadium in Cincinnati,
they practiced.
Speaker 3 (54:56):
This place called Spinny Field.
Speaker 2 (54:57):
I mean you needed a gas math to go over
there because he was right near these construction factories. And
I'd go down there and I'd see the players over there,
and you talk about players like really needed some guidance
and some helping hands. There was one play I'm not
gonna mention name. I don't want embarrassed. I mean I
usually mention names. On this point in time, I'm not
going through because it's really bad. One player would take
his paycheck and cash it. All that money was in
(55:19):
his glove box in his car. He didn't have a
bank account and maybe he didn't know how to do it.
All the money was in the glovebox. Then there was
another player and I once asked him this, I said,
why do you shower before practice? You know what he
told me, And there is a true story. He said
because this went don't have the shower after That's what
he told me. Shower before practice, and I don't have
the shower after practice. I mean, it's funny, but it's
(55:40):
kind of pitiful, really, it really is. I mean, and
if that's someone to tell these guys what to do,
I mean, it'd be a lot better, I think maybe.
And I'm sure I still go on today things like that.
Speaker 1 (55:50):
Oh yes, I mean, I don't think he would mind
me sharing this story. But this goes back to college.
Steve Sarkisian he was at a coaching clinic at SUSC
and he was talking about how, you know, a lot
of the players that they were interacting with came from
homes that didn't have a mail in the house, and
so they have to step into that pseudo father role
(56:13):
and teach these guys about life. And some of those
things may involve basic hygiene, you know, how to wash appropriately,
how to brush their teeth, how to think about like
just taking care of the little hygiene things that you
need to take care of when you were man. So
what I have learned when it comes to everybody whatever,
assume nothing. You know, assume that they know nothing because
(56:35):
we don't really know all of the circumstances that they
come from. But that is a part of it, and
I made it related to college the thing that you're
talking about in the pros, it's different. But look, man,
I see him all the same. To me, they all
are supersized high school kids that are looking for guidance
and then they eventually mature and become grown men if
(56:56):
they're able to carve out a long, successful career in
the league. But at some point everyone kind of needs
mentorship and guidance, and teams have to Teams try to
provide that for those who are willing to accept it,
you know.
Speaker 2 (57:09):
And I'm not picking on athletes because I think everybody
in the business world probably needs it as well. I mean,
you come out of college, you're green, you don't know
how to do it. You're going through an office setting,
You're going with guys that experienced businessmen that have been
in that office maybe five, ten, fifteen years, and you're
coming in as a rookie any kind of business wherever
it may be, and you're intimidating, right. I Mean, so
I think that every business, not just sports. So I'm
(57:32):
not picking on athletes. Do you need that mentorship, some tutoring.
I mean, this is what we do, this is how
you coming to the office, this is the office setting,
this is how you do it. You want to get
involved with a four oh one K and Ira will
help you. You know, that's what you need. I mean, certainly,
it's not just athletes, So I don't want people to
think that I'm just slapping athletes around.
Speaker 1 (57:52):
No, everybody, No, this is common. I don't know if
I mean, Look, everyone pays attention to Colorado. But one
of the things that is going on in Colorado they
recently hired Marshall Falk. Marshall Falk spent seven years in
the private sector working in finances and his job is
to help some of these guys with financial literacy on
the side while also being the running back coach. And
(58:13):
he talked about Dion and how Dion wants to make
sure that everyone that leads the program leaves the program
prepared for life. So there is that part of it
that exists not only in college but in the pros.
And the pros is different because we assume that, hey,
this is a job, they're professionals. It is a transactional relationship.
But the best coaches still want to make it a
(58:35):
transformative experience where they help young men become great and
they're able to take some of the tools that they
acquire throughout their career to help them become successful. When
they're all setting, when it's all said and.
Speaker 2 (58:46):
Done, I do want to say one thing. You're sounding
a lot better. You're sounding stronger.
Speaker 3 (58:51):
Really are SI?
Speaker 1 (58:52):
Maybe maybe I got a little more. Maybe I got
a little more passionate in it. Maybe do a little
passionate today. Maybe got a lot more passionate day. I
got a little more juice today.
Speaker 3 (58:59):
I love Are you drinking some hot water with lemon?
I mean, I'm trying to.
Speaker 1 (59:02):
Be like you. I got all kinds of stuff. I
got all kinds of stuff I got I got ward
over here, I got honey, I got oranges during the break.
I hate it for the guys listening in. It's like
a munchvest.

okay let's get into this right. Now Mister Bucky, brooks
the journalistic side Of Bucky. Brooks he writes FOR nfl Dot.
Com and this guy was a first round pick at
quarterback four years, ago ted to be a superstar by
(01:00:39):
One Bucky. Brooks he's now a jed two, years forty
four million. Bucks we'll talk About Justin. Fields you wrote
about it this, Week tell me tell me. More how
Is Justin fields going to be a? Superstar?
Speaker 1 (01:00:51):
Canny, WELL i think he can because he finally has
someone that hand picked him and made him the franchise.
QUARTERBACK i think what was telling in this situation and
free Agency Aaron glenn defensive coordinator who did a really
good job defending people all over the. League he Faced
Justin fields on multiple, occasions And Justin fields tore him
up every. Time three one hundred yard rushing. Days you,
(01:01:14):
know he had the ability to dominate the game without
being effective as a. Passer as a defensive coordinator who
has now turned in a head, coach he understands the
challenge That Justin fields presents when you have to defend against.
Him and though we judge quarterbacks on their ability to,
throw we've seen a shift in quarterback play where people
are taking anto account total, Yards so the combination of
(01:01:35):
rushing yards and passing yards to complete the. Figure you
think About Josh allen being THE mvp and not saying
they're the same caliber, player but a lot Of Josh
allen's arguments for being THE mvp centered around his ability
to score touchdowns in the red. Zone, well when you
have a dynam athlete Like Justin, field someone who has
a thousand yard center a thousand yard season on his,
resume you begin to think how you can impact and
(01:01:59):
really tear. Opponents you link him up with the receiver
who he, loves and the doors And Garrett wilson because
they played together At Ohio. State you think about the
running backs that they have in, place With Breese hall
And Braylan allen And Tanner, ingstrand who is the new
offensive coordinator who spent time In. Detroit you can begin
to see how they can put this together where it's
a run heavy attack with explosive plays in the passing
(01:02:22):
game to compliment what should be a really good, defense
to help The jets kind of get back in the
conversation of being a competitive.
Speaker 3 (01:02:27):
Squad you, Know i'm really.
Speaker 2 (01:02:29):
SURPRISED i mean the situation In Pittsburgh Justin fields right,
now he was traded To pittsburgh From. Chicago he put
a pretty solid situation right, there wasn't even something Like foreign,
two and then they benched him for whatever the Reason
Russell wilson came. In were you surprised That Justin fields
was the one that left and Not Russell.
Speaker 3 (01:02:46):
Wilson.
Speaker 1 (01:02:49):
No and the reason WHY i would, Say i'm not
surprised because they picked someone else over. You the first
time you're playing where you were the, starter the team
Was foreign. Two it didn't look aesthetically pleasing the way
that they were, winning but they were. Winning Mike tomlin
opted for to take a gamble on the veteran player
who he thought would add the deep ball in And
Russell wilson added the deep. Ball we saw like a
(01:03:10):
little six game stretch where they were throwing the ball
down the, field but then at the end of the
year they couldn't get it. Done they lost five games
in a. Row if You're Justin, fields why would you
want to go back to that situation where they saw
you every, day they saw the team responding to, you
but yet they still pick the veteran over. You we
always talk about in, life go where you're, celebrated not.
(01:03:30):
Tolerated he wanted to have an opportunity to be celebrated
by a coaching staff that truly believes in his talents
and are going to build a team that are going
to allow him to elevate his.
Speaker 3 (01:03:38):
Game, yeah it's funny be because he didn't have a
shot In.
Speaker 2 (01:03:41):
CHICAGO i mean basically getting the first draft, pick you
know that it's going to be a. Quarterback so he
was gone In, chicago but now he's gone In. Pittsburgh
does that go through one's mind as a, player, like
AM i ever gonna make?
Speaker 3 (01:03:54):
It i'm ever gonna get a? Chance CAN i play
in this?
Speaker 2 (01:03:57):
LEAGUE i, mean, certainly skill level is one, thing BUT
i think confidence is just as.
Speaker 1 (01:04:01):
Important one hundred. Percent, NO i think it. MATTERS i
think it has an impact on you and the way
that you look at the game and the way that
you step onto the, field maybe looking over your shoulder
as opposed to fully playing with the confidence knowing that
you're gonna be in. There that have some. Impact and
what we'll be telling us how does the coach and,
(01:04:22):
Staff how does the team respond when he hits a rough,
patch when they lose some games or he doesn't play?
Well do they continue to believe in, him or do
they begin to kind of have the whispers that have
always kind of accompanied him wherever he's. Gone but it's
a terrific opportunity for him to show, people you, know
like the talent that he. HAD i, mean they got
(01:04:43):
him on a team friendly. Deal twenty million dollars is
a really cheap deal for a veteran, starter Considering Daniel
jones got thirteen. Million so that tells you how much
they value him and they want to Give hi an.
Opportunity it also tells me that they're gonna run, him
and they're gonna let him run because they don't have
the significant investment in him like some others, have and
(01:05:03):
so they're willing to let him play his.
Speaker 3 (01:05:04):
Game you, Know i'm really.
Speaker 2 (01:05:07):
Surprised but do they have enough firepower on the offensive
side of the ball to get him? Success to get him,
SUCCESS i, mean he's got his skill, set he could
run the.
Speaker 3 (01:05:16):
Football he did well.
Speaker 2 (01:05:17):
In pittsburgh for first six, Games but is there enough
on the offensive side of the football to give him
that to make him?
Speaker 1 (01:05:24):
Good, WELL i, mean they still have some work to,
do and some of that work has to do with
the offensive, Line but in terms of the weapons he
has around. Him look, man, yes solid firepower around. Him
Gary wilson Remembers Offensive rookie of The year twenty twenty
two put him solid numbers as a great route, runner
and even though he was demoted as the number one
When DeVante adams came, in he still did this thing
(01:05:45):
With Aaron. Rodgers Breist all remember was on his way
to win That Offensive rookie of The year ward before
he popped his aco another year removed from. That he
should be able to return to me in a terrific.
Player Bradley allen a big. Back they have some. Firepower
they gotta fix the offensive. Line they got to make
sure that they can run the football and put a
fortress in front of. Him but it's enough for them
to be competitive in in THE Afc, east.
Speaker 2 (01:06:08):
Right and maybe The Aaron rodgers factor was a major
factor why that team was basically. SPLIT i, mean the
guy maybe was a problem in the in the. Clubhouse
MAYBE i. DON'T i don't, know but there could be
people that were Pro Aaron rodgers and Some he's a dividing,
guy you, know he divided the team, perhaps and maybe
that that HURTS i don't, know but OBVIOUSLY i say
(01:06:28):
that because he.
Speaker 3 (01:06:29):
Won he was a two DIME.
Speaker 1 (01:06:30):
Mvp uh, yeah WHEN i WHEN i talked to people
in the, building they said it wasn't. Him they said
it was more so the head coach said that if
the head coach says it a firm, stance this is
how we're, operating and you do it behind closed door
where you never hanged the player out to drop her,
say but you make it very, clear here's what we're,
doing here's how we're doing, it like you can get. That,
(01:06:51):
also the little situation With mini camp and those things
that was A pr blunder On Robert solad's. Fault even
if you don't like, that you don't have to disclose
that information to the because what does that. Create it
creates more conversation In New. York he creates all this.
Conversation players have to talk about. It they asked about
it all the. Time, Hey, coachester no, better don't put
that out. There even if it was an, issue it
(01:07:12):
doesn't need to be out there for public.
Speaker 2 (01:07:14):
Consumption, okay we talked About Justin. FIELDS i want to
talk about another. Quarterback but BEFORE i, DO i have
to set this up for, you BECAUSE i have to
talk About Miles garrett BEFORE i talk about the. Quarterback Miles,
garrett the defensive end of The Cleveland, browns, says unless
we talked about. This he wasn't happy with the team's
performance this. Year he wanted it. Out and then he, said,
Well jimmy has him the. Owner he wouldn't talk to,
me had a deal with the general. Manager now they
(01:07:35):
given five million, more gets a total of forty million.
Dollars now he's. Happy so is it money or is it?
Winning you, know come, On, miles what's the? DEAL i, mean,
well is it? Money winning?
Speaker 1 (01:07:44):
Money it's always the, Money, Andy i've told you that
it is always the. Money typically when players are, unhappy
the money's. Funny Miles garrett wanted a blockbusted. Deal he
was looking around the. Landscape he saw where people were
Getting Max crosby getting major deals thirty five, million and
look at. THAT i want some of. That my stats
are my stats, Surpasses my impact surpasses. That and that's
(01:08:08):
what it came down. To they made him an offer
that he couldn't. Refuse and that's what. Talks money, Talks
it always. Talks it can make you do things that
you don't want to. Do, so, yeah all those losses
and all that other, stuff it's a lot easier to
sleep at night if you're resting on money bags after
you take those, als and he is certainly resting on
(01:08:28):
some big bags of.
Speaker 2 (01:08:29):
Money so he's getting the most of a non. Quarterback
is that, Correct Miles? Garrett, okay, Sa and that leads.
Up now the light just goes out of my brain
and that that doesn't happen. Often Trey hendrickson had a
better year Than Miles garrett as far as sacks are.
Speaker 3 (01:08:42):
Concerned he literally.
Speaker 2 (01:08:43):
Concerned so Does Trey hendrickson go back to The bengals and, say,
Well Miles garrett got forty, MILLION i won forty?
Speaker 3 (01:08:48):
Five does he do that?
Speaker 1 (01:08:50):
Back he can go back, there BUT i can tell
you what the beingles will, Say, no thank, you all,
right we'll. Pass we'll let you see if you can
find a deal on the open. Market we prioritize jamar
j and T higgins over. There some of that is
that the quarterbacks. Behes Joe burrow has made it very
clear that he wants them to operate like The Philadelphia.
Eagles surround me with great, talent AND i will figure it.
(01:09:11):
Out that Puts Trey henderson out on the cold because
this is what has Happened, Andy they have to make.
Decisions we got enough money to pay, two not, Three
so who are the two that we're gonna. Pay, well
when the quarterback, SAYS i want T higgins And Jamar chase,
there you have.
Speaker 3 (01:09:25):
It well more than.
Speaker 2 (01:09:26):
That Trey henderson's thirty one And Miles garrett's twenty. SEVEN
i think there's a difference over. There that's a key thirty.
One you're playing the.
Speaker 1 (01:09:32):
Downslide, Yeah but also like it's also a perception around the,
League like unfortunately For Trey, hendrickson people won't view him
as the superstar, athlete technician talent That Miles garrett was
because pedigree comes into this. Too Miles garrett was number
one overall. Pick Trey, HENDERSON i think was a fifth round.
(01:09:53):
Pick sometimes it's hard to shake that label no matter
how successful you are in the. League that pedigree speaks
to the talent that people perceived you to have when
you're entering the. League so they always will Give Miles
garrett the reverence that you typically save for a number
one overall. Pick Trey henderson doesn't get that Same he
(01:10:14):
doesn't get the same he doesn't get that same.
Speaker 2 (01:10:16):
Respect, Okay so WHILE i Bring Miles garrett up BECAUSE
i was talking about, quarterbacks all of a, sudden now
The browns have a new quarterback In Kenny. Pickett So
Miles garrett maybe happy sleeping with forty million dollars knowing
that he put that on his. Pillow how could he
possibly be happy With Kenny pickett as a? Quarterback And
pickett says he's gonna get a chance to. Start he's
the only healthy quarterback on their. ROSTER i, mean they're in.
(01:10:37):
Trouble AND i said, this they're in. Trouble If Kenny
pickett's they're starting, quarterback they be better off Getting Kirk.
Speaker 3 (01:10:44):
Cousins they really would.
Speaker 1 (01:10:45):
Be, now do you really believe that The Cleveland browns
are gonna Start Kenny?
Speaker 3 (01:10:49):
Pickett he thinks they're gonna.
Speaker 1 (01:10:51):
Start, man he thought a lot of things after coming
in the league as a first round. Pick he thought
he was gonna be the guy that Replaced Ben roethlisberger
and they were gonna build a statue for. Him he
quickly found out that wasn't the. Case they shipped them
off To. Philly philly now shipped them To. Cleveland Kenny
pickett may have an opportunity to, compete but a lot
of it depends on the. Draft if they draft a quarterback second,
overall well then he'll have a chance to compete and
(01:11:13):
win the. Job but if they bring in A Russell
wilson Or Kirk cousins or, whatever, yeah they can say
it's a, competition but follow the. Money, Andy if they're
paying those other guys more than they're Paying Canny, pickett
your opening day starter is gonna be the guy who
has more.
Speaker 3 (01:11:26):
Money no doubt about.
Speaker 2 (01:11:27):
That. NOW i would think they'd better serve With Russell
wilson Than Kenny, pickett no doubt in my.
Speaker 3 (01:11:32):
Mind you didn't Mention Aaron. RODGERS i don't Think Aaron
rodgers wants to go To.
Speaker 2 (01:11:35):
CLEVELAND i think his possibilities are basically The New York
giants and The Minnesota. Vikings AND i think he's winning
for The. Vikers that's what he. Wants AND i said
early on, TODAY i think The vikings are his best.
Bet number, one he goes, back he could go Against
Green bay and number two atten A, dome and more than,
THAT i don't Think Aaron rodgers or any athlete wants
to go out and have a legacy, saying, well, man this,
guy you, know your two TIME. Mvp but look what
(01:11:57):
he DID i mean against The jets. Loser he walks
out as a. LOSER i look At Tom, brady what he,
did he, left he, Won he won a Super bowl In.
Tampa SO i don't think anybody wants to leave like.
Speaker 1 (01:12:06):
That the only thing THAT i THAT i, say and
that has nothing to do with, Reality it is just.
Perception is he really gonna Follow Brett farv's career and
do everything That Brett farv. Did he's gonna go To New.
York then he's gonna finish his career In, minnesota just
Like Brett farv did after he tried so desperately to
escape his shadow In Green. Bay to, me that's the
(01:12:27):
only thing that would hold up, that like you, know
and it's an ego, thing like would he be okay doing?
It is the best situation that he could jump, into
not only with the, personnel but the play. Caller pittsburgh
would be. Interesting it would be interesting Because Mike tomin
has a personality that he could probably Check Aaron rodgers
when he needed to to make sure that he stayed
a team first due but when you look at that, team,
(01:12:51):
like how do you feel about that? Team do you
feel like you can win in that? Division there's a
lot to that and The, giants The giants are. Launchhot
If Anon rodgers wants to do, that he just wants
to stay in the house that he's currently. In he
wants to cast a, check and he wants to have
fun On. Broadway that's the only reason WHY i could
see him picking The nats because they're so far. AWAY
i think it would be hard for him to step
in there as the so called savior For Brian Dave,
(01:13:12):
Baldin Joe shane and everyone associated with that.
Speaker 2 (01:13:14):
Team i'm with you right. There then let me go
back to This Kenny pickett. SITUATION i, MEAN i don't
understand this trade. Whatsoever The browns traded For Kenny pickett
with The. Steelers they gave up their quarterback Dtr Drian Thompson,
robinson WHO i think probably is a better quarterback Than Kenny,
pickett and a fifth round pick For Kenny. PICKETT i,
mean AND i Saw Drrian Thompson robinson. Play he is
(01:13:36):
sporadically played last year In cincinnati against The. BENGALS i, mean,
look it's tough coming in off the bench and you
don't play much and you don't know what's going. On
BUT i think he's more athletic Than Kenny, pickett that's for.
Speaker 1 (01:13:46):
Sure yeah he. Is maybe think of it this, way all,
Right so no more thing we talked about in scouting
is fit in the. Scheme how does the player's talents
fit within the scheme that we. Run, well maybe The
Cleveland browns are laying the foundation to make a scheme.
Change so you move off of the athletic quarterback in
Dtr Derry Thompson, robinson who WAS i would say more
(01:14:08):
Like Deshaun watson than, not and you move into a
traditional pocket passer like A Kenny. Pickett maybe that sets
the table for them to draft a traditional pocket passer
in the, draft maybe at two. Overall not saying that
they haven't graded like, this But Shuder sanders is more
of a traditional pocket passer than an. Athlete maybe you're
(01:14:29):
trying to stock your quarterback room with guys that have similar.
Skills so then we only operate with one, playbook so
you don't have to change if there's an injury to the.
Starter everything remains the same for everybody on the. Team
same thing goes For. Philly dtr is more Like Jalen
hurst Than Kenny pickett. Was now you can run the
same offense that you run With. Hurts you can run
(01:14:51):
with the. Backup that might play into some of the
decisions that led to the. TRADE i knew you'd have the.
Speaker 2 (01:14:58):
Answer He's Bucky brooks and made defermin above. Way like,

Speaker 1 (01:16:01):
US i think we need a ruling on. This yay.
Speaker 5 (01:16:04):
Nay all, right, guys it's time to.
Speaker 6 (01:16:08):
Play yay or Nae andy And bucky AND i, say
let's go this. Way, so, guys let's start with the
first one. Here college basketball has now passed.
Speaker 5 (01:16:18):
THE nba in. Popularity yay or, Nay Andy, furman.
Speaker 2 (01:16:22):
You know it hurts me to say this because in
my high school graduation, BOOK i SAID i want them
to work on THE.
Speaker 3 (01:16:27):
Nba that was my. Goal right, Now i'm not so.
Speaker 2 (01:16:30):
CERTAIN i think it's a different, game it's a different,
animal AND i think college basketball right now is a
little more. Exciting it's a little, better the games are.
BETTER i, MEAN i just think college basketball probably has
passed by THE.
Speaker 1 (01:16:40):
Nba, Yeah i'm with. You it's easier to like there
are more brands and more teams to, follow and also
there's more diversity interns of style of. PLAY i think
THE nba has devolved into a three point. League everyone
just hoist and hop's a bunch of. THREES i think
people want to see a little different basketball.
Speaker 6 (01:16:57):
Flow all, right all, right that was the. Basketball we're
gonna go on to baseball for this, one. Guys Uh,
so The Texas, rangers The Los Angeles, angels and The
Houston astros have each had their hats from the Latest
New era collection polled because of logos that appear to
have obscenities of some.
Speaker 5 (01:17:17):
Sort Du so yay or, Nay Bucky brooks.
Speaker 1 (01:17:20):
YAY i, mean like come, on like you have to
check that's all some of the things it was, ridiculous
like who was the? Checker who was the person who's
supposed to do to checks and bounces to make sure
everything was. Appropriate they filled on their.
Speaker 2 (01:17:30):
JOBS i, say, NAY i love, It and you know
what those hats are, go but big dump For triple.
Figures they call them big. Time you can't even get him,
now it's hard to get you. KNOW i gotta believe
those hats were done intentionally By Major League baseball to
get twalking points out there like we're doing right.
Speaker 5 (01:17:46):
Now you know, what MAYBE i like The texas. One
that one's funny to.
Speaker 6 (01:17:50):
Me that's, silly but, uh just because you, KNOW i
just like the, silly childish. Humor but, anyways that's enough of.
That we're gonna go like this show it's maybe. True all,
Right so back to college basketball. Guys so the college
basketball portal makes the game more? Competitive, yeah your, Nay.
ANDY i hate to.
Speaker 2 (01:18:11):
Say this as, well BUT i think it does because
right now coaches could go out there and SAY i need,
THIS i need.
Speaker 3 (01:18:16):
This it's gonna cost me.
Speaker 2 (01:18:17):
This SO i, mean you look at some of the
teams right now that are going to THE Nc DOUBLE,
A Saint francis And pennsylvania going to THE Nc DOUBLE.
Speaker 3 (01:18:24):
A are you freaking kidding? Me it is more?
Speaker 1 (01:18:27):
Competitive, yeah, no it's definitely more. Competitive it's a different.
GAME i think everyone enjoys that part Of it's a different,
game and you have to be able to kind of
get all the way in when it comes to the
money and all. That if you want to, compete.
Speaker 6 (01:18:40):
All, right well let's switch gears to, soccer. Guys so
THE mls season currently underway runs Through. October is that too?
Long yay or? Nay Bucky, brooks.
Speaker 1 (01:18:51):
That's a long. Season that's a long season FOR. MLST
i don't know if people would tune in because when
you go Into, october now you're dealing with. Football and
we just have talked about the popularity of, basketball but
everyone knows football is. King it's too. Long they need
to end it before football gets really really. Going you.
Speaker 2 (01:19:07):
Know not only is it too, long but they have
those tournaments inside the regular, season which is.
Speaker 3 (01:19:11):
RIDICULOUS i get.
Speaker 2 (01:19:12):
IT i understand that these guys cannot play really more
than two games a, week and maybe two games a
week is too.
Speaker 3 (01:19:18):
Tough it really. Is it's too.
Speaker 2 (01:19:19):
LONG i don't know what they're trying to. PROVE i
worked in The North American Socey, league and we played
one game a. Week we only played thirty. Games with
thirty two games for this. Season these guys are playing seven.
Speaker 3 (01:19:27):
Months it's.
Speaker 7 (01:19:28):
Ridiculous all, Right, well final say, here, guys college basketball
postseason tournaments are just a waste of time, final Say Andy,
fermanne you.
Speaker 2 (01:19:39):
Are they only are not a waste of time for
the teams that win, it because you could go with
the losing. Record now go back to THE Miac Tournament
South Carolina. State it hurts me That Eric martin's not
gonna go because they lost on a foul.
Speaker 3 (01:19:49):
Shot that hurts.
Speaker 1 (01:19:50):
Me, NO i, MEAN i think it's. Uncessary. Evil you
got to be able to see how people play under.
Pressure With March. Madness we love how people play when
the chips are on the.
Speaker 2 (01:19:59):
Line all, Right, okay there's a big problem, Here so
what are you gonna do about?
Speaker 3 (01:20:04):
It that is more?
Speaker 2 (01:20:04):
Aware On Fox Sports, sunday next, agents what? Agents who needs?
Agents not this school that's coming right. Up good, Morning

Speaker 1 (01:20:46):
You i'm, Good, ANDY i am, good trying to fight through,
it trying to make Sure i'm, good THAT i can.
Deliver this is maybe My Michael jordan. Flugame how about
that you are?
Speaker 2 (01:20:55):
Delivering you always delivered as no doubt about that on Selection.
Sunday And i'm just gonna throw this out and see
if you. Agree you, know, Tonight i'll be looking forward.
Eagerly it's one of those shows like it's, like you,
know must SEE. Tv not much it's ON, tv it's
must see, anymore but this is kind of must SEE.
Tv certain games are must SEE, tv but this is
must See AND i gotta believe the number one teams
(01:21:15):
in the four regions will probably be these four. Teams, Auburn,
Duke florida and The cougars Of. Houston Kelvin, Sampson my,
guy my guy who got a second.
Speaker 3 (01:21:27):
Chance they try.
Speaker 2 (01:21:28):
To run him, out THE ncaa try to run him
out years, ago and they got a second.
Speaker 3 (01:21:31):
Chance AND i love.
Speaker 2 (01:21:32):
Him and it's amazing that he just comes into The
big twelve and wins it back to back years is
the best AND i hope The cougars win it.
Speaker 3 (01:21:38):
ALL i really.
Speaker 1 (01:21:38):
Do i'm gonna say, this haven't watched a lot of
basketball the last few weeks as we're preparing For March.
Madness to, me there's a shift in terms of the great.
Teams the great teams have a physicality and toughness to
them that is unmatched One Rick patino said this And
Kevin sampson has said. This you're not gonna be able
(01:22:00):
to win the championship with eighteen and nineteen year. Olds
the game is too. Physical when you have older, players
they can ratchet it up and it's just hard to
deal with that constant. Harassment WHEN i look At houston play,
man they just wear you down because they're. Relentless they're
in your face that every possession is a. Challenge same
thing With Saint, John same thing WHEN i look at
(01:22:22):
THESE sec. Teams depending on how the games ARE officiatd
and the tournament could have an impact on who. Wins but,
man these are the most physical games That i've seen
in some. Time like THE nba pales in comparison to
the level of physicality and toughness and content allowing and
oh my, gosh like just all of. It they move
you off the spot and it'll be. Telling But Kevin
(01:22:44):
sampson four straight seasons with thirty, wins and he's doing
it with older players that buy into the. System, look,
man he's no, nonsense but it's worked for.
Speaker 3 (01:22:52):
Him it's. GREAT i think he's an unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (01:22:55):
Coach and you know, what the coaches that don't take
any guff from these players and now you don't have.
Speaker 3 (01:23:01):
To because they're, paid they're, professional and he's one of those.
Speaker 2 (01:23:04):
Guys i've watched the GAME i believe the last conference
game of the year For cincinnati was At houston And
houston was. Trailing he benched two guys and put two
guys off the. BEND i, mean he doesn't take any.
GARBAGE i, mean these guys weren't, performing they weren't playing,
bench and they. Won they won the. Game but still
in all that's what he. Does he's. Tough he's a good,
coach but he's a tough. Coach tough. Love that's what you.
(01:23:24):
Need tough love.
Speaker 1 (01:23:26):
One hundred, percent and it works and it always, Works
it never goes out of. Style old school always, wins
and it's one of those things that you have to.
Embrace AND i believe it's easier now to be an
old school coach now that the players are getting, paid so,
everyone so many people are worried about what they're gona
jump in the. Porter no they're, not and if they,
do they wren't good fits for. You but if you're getting,
PAID i can demand more out of you because this
(01:23:49):
isn't a worker. Relationship this is a working. Relationship it's.
Transactional you do the, work you get. Paid you don't
do the, work you don't get. PAID i appreciate that
it is above.
Speaker 2 (01:23:59):
Board, now, Yeah i'll give you three old stool coaches
and they're getting it done right. Now Mick croner AT
ucla he's tough, Love Kelvin sampson At, houston And Rick
petina With Saint. John's those three guys are getting it
done tough. Love, okay let's turn with the. Basketball let's
move to THE. Nba AND i was gonna, say let's
show them some. LOVE i don't know if we're gonna
show them some love or. Not we'll talk about them
BECAUSE i gotta believe THE nba is. Suffering they're suffering
(01:24:21):
for several. Reasons number, ONE i think this season starts too.
Early you, know let the starting time go To. CHRISTMAS
i just believe that we're not ready for. Basketball it's
like the heart OF nfl and they can't. Compete THE
nfl kills them and head the head. Competition whatever the.
Reason and it's FUNNY i say that because gambling has
been a key to THE, nfl you, know fantasy, football
(01:24:42):
gambling on. Games BUT i gotta believe if you're a,
gambler And i'm, not but if you, GAMBLE i think
there's no better game to gamble on then basketball because
the points spread is so. Close where in football this
seven points, here three points. HERE i, MEAN i just
think basketball is a better game to gamble. On BUT
i don't think they prosper with. THAT i don't think
they play. IT i, mean if they had fantasy, basketball
(01:25:05):
Which i've never heard, OF i think that may go
further to help to help lure the. Popularity Maybe i'm,
wrong but if gambling is so, popular you, know play
on THAT nba and do something with.
Speaker 1 (01:25:14):
It, YEAH i, mean you try to Do it's funny
that you say that that lures you're in to betting
and gambling basketball. Beat that would be more nerve racking
to me because it's not as. CONTROLLABLE i just you,
know a bad dead office could certainly cost. You, yeah
THE nba can certainly play on. That you, Know, like
Because i'm not a, Gambler i'm not really into. IT
(01:25:36):
i don't really have a say when it comes to. That,
like you know all the lines in those, things but
like if you want to kind of toe that line
and walk that type, rope, SURE i, MEAN i could
see where THE nba would do. It BUT i worry
when we've seen some of the little incidents that have popped,
up you, know some of the little, allegations some of
the point shaving things that have kind of popped. UP
(01:25:56):
i worry about. That BUT i understand why you're talking
about the fascination and watching, it because it does give
a different energy when you're. Watching when you got, money.
Speaker 2 (01:26:02):
It's so much easier to bet and so much easier
to control the game because cerain football you got to
handle twenty two. Guys twenty two guys are handling, it
and only several guys really can control the points in
a game of football. Basketball you got five. Guys five.
Guys and we've seen scandals over the. Years in the
fifties that Killed New York city, basketball the basketball scandals
and several years. Ago it seems like every ten years
(01:26:23):
there's a big scandal in. Basketball it's very easy to
get a hold of one player who could throw a,
game and the money out there is, there so that's a.
Possibility BUT i will say another problem with, basketball at
least in THE nba is the. Playoffs too many teams
are in the. Playoffs, really there really. Are there's just
too many. TEAMS i gotta to believe there's too. Many they're, meaningless.
Really and now there's another. Problem THE nba is Investigating
(01:26:45):
Oklahoma city The thunder for players. Thinning they're investigating The
Oklahoma City thunder for potentially violating the league's player participation.
Policy this happened the other, Day march. Seventh the game
is under. Review Oklahoma city's, game a home win in
over The Portland Trail, blazers in which the starting, five
the starting five Of Oklahoma city didn't play all. Right
(01:27:08):
and there's a lot of things around. This, okay improper
absences around the. League first of, all If i'm a
coach or a, PLAYER i get.
Speaker 3 (01:27:16):
IT i get.
Speaker 2 (01:27:17):
It there's nothing illegal right here Because i'm resting my
guys for the. Playoffs and, next if no one enforces
or punishes this or punishes my, Team i'm gonna continue
to do.
Speaker 3 (01:27:27):
It is it? Wrong not? Really but is.
Speaker 2 (01:27:30):
It appropriate for the fan, base especially if a team
visits a city Once daddy has taken Little junior to the,
game paying big bucks for parking and, tickets and it's
not going.
Speaker 3 (01:27:40):
To see you, know MAYBE sga play For Oklahoma. City it's.
Wrong the whole thing is.
Speaker 2 (01:27:46):
Wrong but it all falls back on the shoulders of
the commissioner because he's not getting it.
Speaker 3 (01:27:51):
Done he's not.
Speaker 2 (01:27:52):
Punishing look If i'm on a highway And i'm driving
one hundred miles an hour and i Know i'm not
gonna get, Caught i'm gonna continue to drive one hundred
miles an. Hour no one's stopping. Me you have to
enforce the, rules no matter what it. Is in, school you,
know WHEN i was in elementary, school you had to
wear a tie every.
Speaker 3 (01:28:08):
Day it's.
Speaker 2 (01:28:09):
Stupid no one they don't even make ties. ANYMORE i
don't think no one wears. Them but you have to
enforce the. Rule you didn't wear a, tie they say
you to the principal's. Office that call you.
Speaker 3 (01:28:16):
Mom that's what they, did all, right got to enforce the.
Speaker 1 (01:28:19):
RULES i, mean, look the rules are there for a,
reason and if you're not going to force, them then
why have. Them so you got to stick and make
sure everyone ad buys by the. Rules so everyone is
doing the same.
Speaker 2 (01:28:28):
Thing, okay so what do they? Do how do you fix?
THIS i, mean you, Know Adam, SILVER i think he's
a weak. COMMISSIONER i think he's very. WEAK i think
he's afraid of the. PLAYERS i, remember back in the,
Day may He rest in, Peace David stern was the
commission of The National Basketball. ASSOCIATION i Think Alan iverson
didn't stand for the national. Anthem the STORY i, GOT
i didn't get it, directly BUT i got secondhand That
(01:28:50):
David stern was watching ON.
Speaker 3 (01:28:52):
Tv he called the arena In.
Speaker 2 (01:28:54):
Philadelphia and he went, nuts and he Called iverston and
suspended him and find them whatever it may.
Speaker 3 (01:28:58):
Be that that's a. Commissioner that's what a commissioner.
Speaker 1 (01:29:02):
DOES i, mean, YEAH i mean there's definitely leadership stuff
that the commissioner must, do and he has to always
make sure every decision THAT i make is about protecting the,
brand and THE nba brand is one that needs to be.
Protected in, football they talk About Roger goodell than protecting the. Shield,
yeah you can Say Adam silver needs to make sure
that he protects the, brand he protects the. Logo the
(01:29:24):
players do have, significance say the money and those. Things and,
look we're gonna come a time where there's gonna be
a stoppage because the owners and the players appear to
be on different wavelengths when it comes to some of these.
THINGS i would expect the next time THE cba comes,
up they'll be a stoppage to try and rectify some
of these.
Speaker 2 (01:29:41):
Issues, right but here's the question right, now how do
you fix? This how do you fix the fact that
if you're going to a game of paying big bucks
and you're not going to See, lebron pay's gonna, sit
or you're going to a game you can see you, know,
anybody any, player any favorite player of, yours especially if
a team comes to a city only once all year.
Speaker 3 (01:29:58):
LONG i, mean it's wrong and, really, so how do
you fix.
Speaker 2 (01:30:01):
IT i, Mean i'm just throwing out some ideas and
If i'm, wrong tell. Me, okay find the team like
a half a mill that's a big hit owner doesn't
want to get fined. Money maybe lose a draft, pick
maybe loss of a roster. Spot maybe if you go
to the playoffs instead of having eleven or twelve guys
in your roster come down to ten.
Speaker 3 (01:30:17):
Guys you gotta do.
Speaker 2 (01:30:19):
Something you gotta fix, this BECAUSE i, REMEMBER i think
The San Antonio spurs started this years. Ago Greg papovich
did it when they played The Miami heat In. Miami
he left the team In San. Antonio he left the
entire team there just about and they went To. Miami
it was a great move for his party's the rest of
these guys for the. Playoffs but it's. Wrong it's, wrong
and it hurts the, game and it hurts the. Fans
(01:30:39):
and the fans are showing this by lack OF tv.
Ratings the ratings for THE nba right now are in the.
Tank no one's watching THE.
Speaker 1 (01:30:47):
Nba. SORRY i just don't know how you can legislate, it, Though,
ANDY i don't know how you can make people, play you,
know LIKE i, MEAN i understand. It but, okay SO i.
Am let's say The Miami heat and we are gonna
be in the playoffs and we have a road trip
where we're going To, milwaukee and, look is it important
for me to win the regular season game or to
(01:31:08):
win the title as a? Coach AM i judge knowing
WHAT i do during the regular season or WHAT i
do in the postseason because we can't have everything. Right
we're gonna play. Everybody din't wear them. Down then they're
tired or they're hurt going into the. Postseason Then i'm
one and done AND i lose my. Job it's just,
very very difficult to legislate in that you have to
play all the players for every. GAME i just THINK
(01:31:28):
i just think it's, LIKE i think it's a hard
thing to.
Speaker 2 (01:31:30):
Manage but how come back in the, day the players
did play every. Game i'll come back in the Day
Will chamberlain played every. Game Bill russell played every game
forty eight minutes every. Year how come they? Did and
the travel and the hotels were a lot. Worse they traveled,
commercial they didn't have. CHARTER i used to sit down
(01:31:51):
in a cigar shop Downtown cincinnati and twalk To Oscar
robertson on a daily, basis and he tell me stories
that they get up at six in the morning to
get on a commercial.
Speaker 3 (01:31:58):
Flight he gets. Stuck want to see with a baby,
crying that's what they.
Speaker 1 (01:32:02):
Did, yeah it's a different. TIME i mean the money
has certainly, changed and as it's gotten, better like maybe
the generation has gotten. Softer but THEN i blame sports science,
too like the more people that we have in the
building that are, saying, hey this GUY'S gps, numbers he
needs arrest and all those. Things so as much we
want to blame the, players we can blame ownership and
(01:32:22):
the team builders and those things because they're leaning and
relying on these technologies to try and put their teams
in the best situation to win in the. POSTSEASON i don't, know,
MAN i think it's one of these circular conversations that
the dog is gonna always chase his. TAIL i don't
know how you make. It where they. Play we put
the minimum the mandatory minimums when it came to the,
(01:32:43):
Awards but the awards or like they're they hurt the
players if you legitimately get, HURT i don't, Know like
it's one of those. Things something.
Speaker 2 (01:32:52):
Funny i'll tell you something really, funny BECAUSE i think
the fans are up at arms because they want to
see the. Player they want to see the star. PLAYERS
i want to See Anthony. Lays they want to see
the end play when he comes to your.
Speaker 3 (01:33:02):
Town they really.
Speaker 2 (01:33:03):
Do, however in, baseball it's almost a known fact when
you play A sunday afternoon game after A saturday night.
Game the regulars don't play on a SUDDEN i Remember
Ken griffy Jun you would never hardly play on A
sunday afternoon, right just just the way it, Was and
no one yelled and screamed about. That maybe because there's
eighty one home, games you could always catch him down the.
(01:33:24):
ROAD i don't, know But sunday afternoon traditionally was a
day when THE b team played For Major League baseball.
Speaker 1 (01:33:30):
Guys oh, WOW i didn't. KNOW i didn't know. That
but that's, interesting and that's an interesting. APPROACH i, mean
if you want to make it where we're gonna sit
our guys at, home not on the, road maybe that's a,
possibility but then you're gonna get them complaining about Little
johnny only comes to two home games a year and both,
times he's Miss. LEBRON i, mean you're never gonna satisfy,
(01:33:51):
everybody so you got to get in the room and
figure out how can you satisfy the.
Speaker 3 (01:33:53):
Majority it's amazing to.
Speaker 2 (01:33:55):
Me and, LOOK i think you a couple of the
fact that these guys aren't playing and to the fact
that the way they, play the style of. PLAY i
think some team the other, DAY i think it WAS
i think it was maybe The. KNICKS i think they
threw up like sixty three three point. SHOTS i, mean come,
on that's. RIDICULOUS i, mean it JUST i remember the
beauty of the. Game Though Golden state to some, extent
(01:34:17):
still plays the game the way it should be. Played all,
Right And i'm watching this thing ON hbo right. Now
It's Celtics pride or something like, that the story of
the post Of. Celtics have you seen? THAT i, mean
and they Asked Bill, russell it's. GREAT i, Mean Bill russell, said,
yeah we only had six, plays and we had options
off those six, plays and it's just beautiful the way
they played the. Game and right, NOW i watched some
(01:34:40):
of THESE nba. Games i've seen better games down In
Dyker park And brooklyn guys running up and, down kids
running in the same. Thing, really that's what they. DO
i don't see any set. PLAYS i just don't get.
IT i understand how the league came to, that AND
i understand you need gimmicks in the. League you got
a three point Go, NO i told. YOU i did
this several weeks, ago AND i have not gotten an.
Answer talk about could limit the three point? Goal have
(01:35:02):
a designated three point? Shooter only one guy on the
team can shoot three point? Shots AND i wrote this
To Adam. SILVA i had not heard a.
Speaker 3 (01:35:11):
Nancy he. Won't he probably threw it in the.
Speaker 2 (01:35:13):
Garbage i'm trying to help the, league that's All i'm
trying to, do trying to help.
Speaker 1 (01:35:16):
Them, YEAH i don't. Know here's WHAT i would, say
because someone was in my mentions talking about HAVE i
watched college basketball game because they shoot threes all the? Time,
YES i. Have When i'm talking about the three point,
Shot i'm saying the diversity in which they. Play, so for,
instance WHEN i look at the college, GAME i can
See louisville do four court. PRESSURE i can Do syracuse
play a two to three. ZONE i can see other
(01:35:38):
people do one three, ones in those things now, offensively
some people are running horns. Offense some people are running
BOX ucla motion in those. Things, yes they may hoist,
threes but there's more, movement which makes the game better to.
Watch WHEN i look at THE nba, game it's, dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble.
Dribble then with eight seconds, left someone goes one on,
(01:35:58):
one they set a pick and, roll and then you
end up up shooting a bell out. Three so for,
me it's not enjoyable to. Watch and everyone who is
trying to Mimic Golden state When Golden state went on
that run sixteen seventeen, eighteen when they kind of rose to,
prominence they don't have the same, players and so you
can't steal someone's style if your players don't match up
with the x's and. O's to, me that's the problem
(01:36:20):
in the depth in THE, nba everyone is trying to
be something that they're. Not they're not The Golden State
warriors from. Yesteryear like you have to find what worked
for your own.
Speaker 2 (01:36:27):
Team i'm glad you mentioned the press and situation that throws.
Back i'm latching the semi finals of The Big East conference.
Tournament the other, day it Was Saint john's Against. Marquette
Saint john's was down sixteen points in the first, half
and all of a, Sudden Rick patino calls the time.
Out they pressed full, court full court. Pressure, okay what
happened the end of the. Game Saint john's won by
(01:36:48):
sixteen and they went to the. Finals to be creating last,
NIGHT i mean that's, basically, yeah the.
Speaker 1 (01:36:54):
Only THING i watched them last. NIGHT i watched them last.
Night they couldn't buy a. Bucket then the second half
they shot about seventy, Percent but it was the defense
that wore the opponent. Down they tightened the, screws they
ratcheted up the, pressure and it was enjoyable to watch
how they played. Defense to, me that's what it. Was
it was playing on both ends of the, floor which
is why college is a more enjoyable game than THE,
Nba no doubt about.
Speaker 3 (01:37:15):
It it really.
Speaker 2 (01:37:16):
Is but you have to be the youngster who watches
that game and, says you know, WHAT i don't know
IF i want to play For Saint, John's Rip, PATINO
i don't know IF i want to press forty. MINUTES i,
Really i'm sure there's some people who don't want to do.
That they just want to. Shoot they didn't want to play,
defense and a lot of teams. Don't they really.
Speaker 1 (01:37:34):
Don't not. Crazy they didn't want to dig again because it's.
Hard it takes a lot of. Effort and then when
we talked about that effort and it THEN i can
be able to play eighty two games playing that hard
all the. Time it's.
Speaker 2 (01:37:47):
Amazing and also there's NO i, guess there's no praise for.
Defense defense is kind of take taken for. Granted you're
not going to be in the top ten shots ON,
espn and at the end of the, game you're not
going to be glorified for playing good. Defense that's the.
PROBLEM i think everybody has that, ego and defense will
(01:38:08):
not give you the ego the satisfaction of an, EGO i.
Speaker 3 (01:38:10):
Guess but they're. Winning that's What Saint john's does right.
Now they. Win i'd love to see them go deep
in the. TOURNAMENT i don't know how deep they can.
Speaker 2 (01:38:17):
Go Their achilles, HEEL i think if they have, one
is the lack of the three point. Shot they don't
shoot outside, well but they'll beat you to death inside
in the.
Speaker 1 (01:38:29):
Paint, YEAH i, mean there's nothing wrong with beating people
that are death in the. Paint as a hire for single,
shot you just have to get toe you to pound the, boards.
Speaker 3 (01:38:37):
No doubt about.
Speaker 2 (01:38:38):
That we'll talk about that so much. MORE i got
a story About marquette and their coach will hold. That
but we'll do that when we. Continue but right, now

Tractor supply for life out. There all, right we roll
along right. Now we got the blame game in about twelve,
minutes and we talked ABOUT i guess the portal earlier
today and the agents in the, vault the general managers
(01:40:38):
on the college, level be it football or. Basketball but
The Golden eagles Of marquette get. This they have not
used the transfer portal in three. Years and now our
source tells the media That shakers. Smart the basketball coach
is telling his players he won't negotiate with. Agents how
do you like, That Bucky, brooks he won't negotiate with the.
Speaker 1 (01:41:00):
AGENTS i, mean, LOOK i understand. It it's the same
reason Why Nick saban kind of got out of you,
Know alabama and college football just, because, look, man you
tire of people coming back and wanting more money when
things have been agreed. UPON i understand What shaka's smart.
Like players are selfishly wanting to drive up the. Price
they want to change it in the middle of the,
(01:41:22):
season and it's just. Disruptive how can you build a
team when you're constantly always talking about roles and conversation or.
Whatever at some, point once the deal is, done the
deal is, done and we play at the end of the.
Season you want to talk about, it, cool BUT i
think it should be, Direct like there's something to being. Direct,
now what you have our a bunch of middleman and
street agents and everyone talking from the, players and it
makes it, very very divisive when it comes to trying
(01:41:45):
to build a, team because no matter what we're, doing
whether it's professional, amateur those things the values that you
have to have to build a. Team you still got
to have, selflessness you got to have, Sacrifice you got
to have people that are willing to put the team
goals over their individual. Goals and when you start talking
individually about money and all these, things particularly in the
middle of the, season it eliminates all. That it becomes
(01:42:07):
a bunch of mercenaries chasing the bag as opposed to
really trying to chase something in terms of trying to be.
Speaker 2 (01:42:12):
Great you, KNOW i had no idea UNTIL i read,
this but it says that nearly every college basketball player
projected to go in the first round of this SUMMER'S
Nba draft already has an. AGENT i didn't know, that
and most of them they list their agents contact prominently
on the social media. PAGES i checked it, out and they.
Do and, man they have had. Representation get. THIS i
had no idea, either since high, school since high, School Bucket,
(01:42:33):
BROOKS i had no. Idea is it that? Important how
do these agents get in contact with these? Guys they're like.
VULTURES i guess they get on the horn and they
just call up the school and call the guy.
Speaker 3 (01:42:43):
Up is that what they?
Speaker 7 (01:42:44):
Do?
Speaker 1 (01:42:45):
YEAH i, mean, LOOK i think what they're doing IS
i think these guys understand point of. Contact they know
how to do. It they know how to get in
contact with the people they need to get in contact.
With when it comes to the, money everybody is being
represented by somebody and you have to understand that and
you begin to negotiate those. Deals and they started getting
around these players in high school as soon like it
(01:43:05):
happens even earlier than we would. Expect but it's you,
know IT'S i won't say it's. ANNOYING i would say
that it's Just, look it's just the way of the.
Business and whether it's, basketball where it's, football, like that's
just how it's. Going and, look it's not gonna.
Speaker 2 (01:43:20):
Change, OKAY i know you played in THE. Nfl i'm
sure you had an. Agent how did you come in
contact with your agent an?
Speaker 3 (01:43:26):
AGENT i don't.
Speaker 1 (01:43:27):
KNOW i mean, no certainly not in college and didn't
and the pros you just kind of have what you.
Have but it is it is one of those things
that you just.
Speaker 3 (01:43:36):
Did you reach out to your. Agent he contacted, you.
Speaker 1 (01:43:39):
He contacted he Contacted he contacted, me BUT i knew
him because my, Roommate so he represented my. Roommate we
began to develop a relationship through his relationship with my.
Roommate and that's how it goes and normally most, relationships
that's how it. Goes like, it you, know like it's
hard to figure out which agent is right for you
(01:44:00):
because one size doesn't fit all and you don't know
what you need and so you need it and so
you hope that you make these decisions correctly in a
blind date type situation and you hope that it works.
Out but it's one of the more challenging things to
find the proper representation for who you, are where you're
going to, go and what you're going to need over
(01:44:21):
the course of the.
Speaker 2 (01:44:22):
Career this is interesting because the outstanding guard On, marquette Cam,
jones one of the best players in the country. Really
on His instagram, account it says agent at Coach Shaker
smart's and that to me will probably help a lot
of high school kids, saying, LOOK i don't want to
have an.
Speaker 3 (01:44:39):
Agent Maybe i'll go To.
Speaker 2 (01:44:40):
MARQUETTE i don't, know But smart has been refused to
negotiate with agents this spring tells his players and recruits
that they will get the same money From marquette's collective
with or without. ONE a source familiar with marquetz nil
they maybe like this. Negotiations told this To Front Office.
Sports so how does that work? Out in other, words
if you have an, age the agent would deal with
(01:45:01):
THE gm of the. School if you don't have an,
agent you deal With Shaka, smart And shaka's actually the general.
Manager he's gonna tell a player you're going to get
this and that's the end of. It if you had an,
agent you wouldn't get any.
Speaker 1 (01:45:11):
MORE. Hm that's, Interesting, yeah very very.
Speaker 2 (01:45:18):
Interesting and we talked about the advantage of school that
maybe does not have a football team and they could
put all their energy and funds into. Basketball So Mark
kett is a Private catholic university without a football, team
and it limits the amount of money it could spend
to lord.
Speaker 3 (01:45:34):
Players Dwayne. Wade we mentioned this.
Speaker 2 (01:45:35):
Earlier Dwayne wade did recently pledge three million to the,
school but the gift was not limited to.
Speaker 3 (01:45:41):
Basketball that's.
Speaker 2 (01:45:42):
Interesting the portion of the gift focused on sports was
dedicated To marquett's. Facilities and this is a choice that
some of the famous athletes. Before instead of nil, DONATIONS
i get. IT i, mean in the facility you get
your name on, it you, know The Dwayne Wade gymnasium practice,
facility rather than an nil donation to what kid who
may bolt after a.
Speaker 3 (01:46:01):
YEAR i get. That there's no return of an.
Speaker 1 (01:46:03):
Investment, YEAH i, mean, like, look, man it's a. LOT
i mean it's a lot because like You, Dowayne, wayne
you think about your blussed wind and tears and what
you did to earn. It, like, YEAH i could see
that being. Annoying, like, No i'm not doing all this
going directly to the. PLAYERS i could do something that
goes beyond the players that had significance when it comes to.
Speaker 2 (01:46:21):
Impact, Yeah i'm just wondering that this story that came
out For marquette that they don't deal at Least Shaka
smart doesn't deal with. Agents that may Hurt marquette because
obviously there's gonna be an agent getting in some player's
year right now and say why would you want to go.
There i'll get you more money because he's not gonna
deal with. ME i think it could be more of
a negative To marquete than a. POSITIVE i, mean it's
(01:46:44):
great That shaka does, that and it hasn't gone to
the portal in three. Years BUT i think at the
end of the, DAY i think it's gonna hurt market
more than help.
Speaker 1 (01:46:50):
It, Maybe BUT i think at the. Coach as a,
coach you you make a. Decision DO i want to
coach kids THAT i want to be. Around DO i
want to have an environ THAT i, created or DO
i want to kind of deal with things that are
imposed on. Me if you're shock and, smart you have
skins in the, game you've been successful in multiple, places
you can draw a line in this in and say,
(01:47:10):
No i'm. Good this is how we're going to operate
with the blessing of, school And i'm willing to bet
on myself operating in this. SPACE i can't say that
it has hurt him Because marquette has been very successful
since he's taken. OVER i think as a coach, man
you have these crossroads where you have to pick which
direction are you? Going he is elected to, Go, Hey
i'm gonna deal with the good guy. Thing i'm gonna
(01:47:31):
deal with an organic situation where the program.
Speaker 3 (01:47:34):
Grows it's, interesting it really is talk about. MONEY i
talk about.
Speaker 2 (01:47:38):
PLAYERS i would say there is no better, job not
only in The national footballleagu but maybe in sports than
a backup. Quarterback you'll hardly play and you make good.
Money and proof is in the point in because THE,
nfl with the quarterback, situation we talked About Sam donald three,
years one hundred million with The Seattle. Seahawks that's the
most expensive deal so far in free. Agency Justin field
(01:48:00):
two years forty million with The. Jets, okay but let's
look at the. Backups backup quarterbacks right, now WHICH i
guess have been proven of value simply BECAUSE a did
starters get injured AND b with a seventeen game schedule
looking in the, future it probably expands to eighteen.
Speaker 3 (01:48:16):
Games they're going to be.
Speaker 2 (01:48:17):
Hurt you need a quality, backup and now these guys
are getting. Paid you Get Daniel Jones Indianapolis colts fourteen.
MILI i, mean come, on, really fourteen million dollars For Daniel.
Speaker 3 (01:48:29):
Jones come, on.
Speaker 1 (01:48:31):
Well that's called of doing. BUSINESS i, mean that's a cheap.
Deal when we talk about quarterbacks making fifty five million,
annually fourteen million is. NOTHING i mean that is really
an economic, deal and we have to understand it in
the landscape of. Ball in the landscape of, ball like
you're just talking about literally like high, end, backup low
(01:48:54):
end starter type. Money For Daniel, Jones i'm okay with.
It but WHAT i wouldn't be okay with is what
he signed when these The giants forty million dollars for
what he Was that was a mistake because you can
never justify paying him that when he didn't have the
skills to carry the team at that.
Speaker 3 (01:49:08):
Level here's a question on a.
Speaker 2 (01:49:10):
Throwout you would we be better served as a public
and media as well if we were not privy to
the salaries of, athletes BECAUSE i think that causes a
lot of. Problems, now obviously the athletes want to know
because they'll use one against the. Other we saw that
With Miles. Garrett you know he's getting forty, million now
he's getting thirty five on forty million because other players
(01:49:32):
in his position were getting more and he wanted to get.
More that's just the Way Jamar chase with The Cincinnati.
Bengals Justin jefferson's getting more than. Him he once more
Than Justin. Jefferson that's just.
Speaker 1 (01:49:41):
The way it.
Speaker 2 (01:49:42):
Is BUT i think we'd be better served as a
public media and just the public as well at, large
if we didn't know what they. Made don't you? Agree
if it was, prior we don't know. WHAT i don't
know what my fellow workers At Fox Sports radio, make
AND i don't. CARE i think if that number came
out there'll be some, problems don't you do you?
Speaker 1 (01:50:00):
Agree so here's the. THING i agree with you to a, point,
right because we don't walk around in civilian life knowing
what everyone. Makes. Right we just have a roundabout idea
of what certain jobs bring. About like if you're in certain,
careers you kind of have a roundabout number in terms
of what they. Make sports is the only thing where
(01:50:21):
everyone is out there for public. Display. Right it's all
about how much you make or whatever it, does and
it can create some jealousy and envy when people are
looking at players and fans are looking at players and
coaches in those. Things but also that is kind of
a part of the fantasy world that we live, in
because remember fantasy, football some of these things are tied
(01:50:42):
into those things with salary cap and all that other.
Stuff and now that we're so public with the salary,
cap you kind of have to know how the pieces
of the puzzle. FIT i think it's too late to
put the two face back in the. Tube we just
kind of have to live with.
Speaker 2 (01:50:56):
It, YEAH i just think that we'd be better served
with we didn't, know and there was a time way
back when what we didn't. Know BUT i think agents
love it because they played one against the other and they, say,
well this guy's getting this and my guy did, better
AND i should get more. Money And Jacoby brissaid now
with The cardinals two, years twelve, million maybe it is
a bargain six million a. Year Mason rudolph's not back
(01:51:19):
with The. Steelers Mason, Rudolph, okay two years eight million.
Dollars that to me, TOO i hate to, say that's
probably a little bit of a. Bargain AND i don't
understand why this guy never made. IT i saw him
play At Oklahoma. STATE i thought he was a great.
Quarterback not so, MUCH i, know and that's WHY i
sit here and talk and blather all the. Time And
i'm not a scout in The National Football. League BUT
i Thought Mason ruloff would make it in The National Football.
Speaker 1 (01:51:40):
LEAGUE i did, Too i've been watching. Him, LOOK i
made a trip To steelwater to watch, it to watch him.
THROW i thought he would BE i thought we had
more success than he's. Had sometimes it's the, player sometimes
it's the. Environment it just hasn't worked. OUT i would
say by his length of, career he's been moderately. Successful
(01:52:01):
i'm sure he wanted more. Success but sometimes when you're
projecting guys from the system that he was in Under Mike,
gundy you just don't. Know it was very. Easy it
was quarterback. Friendly but, yeah it just didn't work out for, Him.
Speaker 3 (01:52:14):
Right what about your guy In?
Speaker 2 (01:52:16):
Jacksonville they got Now Nick mullins two years for six
and a half Mil nick Mully you Think i'll ever
see the light of day In?
Speaker 1 (01:52:22):
Jacksonville, WELL i MEAN i hope, now because that Means
Trevor lawrence is hurt if he sees the light of.
Day sometimes in the backup you want a guy that
can help you teach everybody the. System Nick mullins was
up In. Minneapolis the new office of coordinator comes From.
Minnesota it's having someone that can Help trevor learn the
offense while also preaching the gospel to other. People so,
(01:52:45):
LOOK i understand. It you hope that he never, plays
BUT i understand why you make that.
Speaker 2 (01:52:48):
Move, okay there was a move that was. MADE i
really scratched my. HEAD i didn't understand what. Happened pittsburgh
Steel is running Back Naja, harris he's. Gone he's signed
with the sandid with The, cities The Los angeles. Charges,
okay twenty twenty one pro, bowler the only current player
to rush for over one thousand yards in each of
the previous four. Years and he said he knew that
(01:53:10):
he would not be resigned With. Pittsburgh and basically he
came out and, said, well it was clear that he wasn't.
Speaker 3 (01:53:16):
Appreciated by The. Steelers what does that mean?
Speaker 2 (01:53:19):
Now i'm trying to read it to does that mean
like they didn't give him more money that's why he's not?
APPRECIATED i mean he, PLAYED i mean what does that?
Mean when it just come? Out naj and SAY i
want more. Money he, SAID i wasn't. Appreciated so in other,
words you're not appreciated because you're not getting more.
Speaker 1 (01:53:34):
Money that's what you really, need SAY i, MEAN i
mean like that's a part of. It, YES i would
say that for the time That naje was there four
straight one thousand yard, seasons and it doesn't mean as
much as he used to back in the day because
of the number of games and those. Things but there
was always this sense Around nase that The stellers wanted
to move, on whether it's Putting Jalen warren in the
(01:53:55):
backfield with, him putting other people. There it appeared that
The steelers were always trying to replace. Him and on
one of the hours and one of the, SEGMENTS i
talked about going where you're celebrated as opposed to being.
Tolerated he probably had a feel that they were tolerating
him but not celebrating, him which is what he. Wants
he goes to The, chargers Where Jim harbor has always
(01:54:15):
recruited and recruited him out of high, school wanted him
to come play for Him At. Michigan there's an adoration
that players want to feel and sometimes in a business
where we think it's all about the, money it's about the.
Relationships it's about the, connectivity and he wants to feel,
appreciated which would make him play. BETTER i think that's
what he's alluding.
Speaker 2 (01:54:34):
To, YEAH i understand relationship Because i'm going to tell
yourself That i'm gonna let SOMETHING i cut out of the.
BAG i could have worked with anybody here On, sunday
anybody At Fox Sports. RADIO i went To Scott, shapiro
the head, honcho The, pope AND i, SAID i want
to work With Bucky. BROOKS i, did all, right just
to let the cat out of, bit to let you.
KNOW i could have worked with. ANYONE i could have
worked With Colin, coward all. Right he would have got
(01:54:56):
up On sunday and wanted to work with, Me BUT
i didn't.
Speaker 3 (01:54:58):
Want to work with. HIM i want.
Speaker 1 (01:54:59):
TO i work with.
Speaker 3 (01:55:00):
You how do?
Speaker 2 (01:55:01):

of people talk about the. Game you've been there and done,
that And i've learned so much from.
Speaker 3 (01:55:07):
YOU i.
Speaker 1 (01:55:08):
Did see we move, on and y, see you made
me feel. Appreciated so that makes me want to re
sign with the. Team it makes me want to give
EVERYTHING i have to the. Team that's all it. Is
everybody wants a little added boy every now and. Then
that's All naja Har is. In just give me a
little added. Boy had a. Boy good.
