Speaker 3 (02:07):
Well, there was a police investigation that has now concluded. David,
I've spoken to police this morning. We have confirmed Thomas
has since withdrawn his initial statement around this incident, which
is alleged to have happened a couple of weeks ago.
Earlier in April, he drove down to ballaratte with a
friend to sell his girlfriend's car. This car deal has
gone sour. At some point, he alleges that he was

(02:29):
held at gunpoint by the people two men that were
trying to buy this car, demanding the car and cash.
Now after several hours, he negotiated a release and he
was released unharmed along with his friend. They've then called
police to tell them what's happened, only to withdraw their
statement some days later. Thomas, of course, was sacked in
February last year for a number of off uffield incidents

Queensland's adult crime Adult time laws appear to be helping
reduce the state's youth crime rate. Let's go live to

(04:07):
Georgie Chulmbley in Brisbane Now and Georgie Serious offenses for
youths have dropped by a third in just three months.

Speaker 4 (04:15):
Good morning David. That's right and this is the first
evidence that these laws are working, The government saying that
these the number of children being charged with one or
more of these thirteen offenses is dropped by thirty two
percent over a three month period between December and March
compared with that same time period last year, and that
we're also seeing this flow on through the courts, that
magistrates are actually mentioning these adult crime adult time laws

(04:39):
when they're sentencing youth offenders, including someone who was sentenced
to an eighteen months sentence of imprisonment in detention after
allegedly using an unlawfully using a vehicle as well as
entering a dwelling. Now, the magistrate said that they imposed
a strict sentence because that they believed that it would

(04:59):
deter other the children from doing the same thing. Now
we know that the government is looking to increase the
number offenses that are affected by these laws from thirteen
up to thirty three separate offenses, and that's set to
be debated in Parliament next month.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
David Georgie Chumbley, thank you, and Queensland Premier David Chris
o'fooley will join us in Brisbane this morning after seven o'clock.
Well a coronial inquest into the fatal Bondi stabbings last
year will get under way today, examining the events that
led to the deaths of six innocent people. Let's go
live to Liam Tapper and Sydney and Liam their families

(05:34):
could finally have some closure.

Speaker 5 (05:38):
Yeah, morning, David, that's right, and that's what many of
these families are hoping for. As this inquest gets under
way today, it is expected to run for the next
five weeks and it's hopefully going to shed some light
on a number of key issues, one being the mental
health system and how that may have let down Joel Coutchie,
of course, that forty year old who was responsible for

(05:59):
taking the lives of six innocent people more than twelve
months ago at Bondo Junction, Westfield. It's also going to
look at the security guards and what more could have
been done to help them and what more can be
done to help them moving.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Forward as well.

Speaker 5 (06:12):
It's also going to look at the media's reporting of
the fatalities in the days afterwards, but also more recently
as well, as some lawyers have said that some of
the actions they are in broadcasting, that some of the
stories around the situation have hurt a lot of the families. Now,
these families, they all say that they support the inquest.

(06:35):
They do want answers, and we hopefully might get some
answers from those two tradees. Of course, those two fearless
men who rent towards Joe Couci who tried to save
more people on that afternoon. But David, hopefully these families
will get some answers and we never see something so
tragic happen like this here in Australia.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
Again, Yes, a very big weak ahead for those families. Leam,
thank you well. With Queensland tourism getting a much needed
economic injection after cyclone, Alfred OSSI's are now getting savvier
when they're booking their winter getaways. Let's go live to Georgia,
Cosi now on the goal goes Georgia. Good morning to you.
They're opting for destinations much closer to home.

Speaker 6 (07:15):
They are, David. When they're in those destinations, they're finding
savvy ways to save a little bit of extra cash,
whether that be staying just outside the city center or
staying in more hostel style accommodation. But nonetheless a thirty
four percent of Ossie say that right now they are
planning a domestic getaway and Skyscanner has pinched the numbers

(07:36):
and they actually say in terms of cheap flights, the
number one destination right now is Launceston in Tasmania. That
is followed by none other than the Gold Coast and
also Hamilton Island in Queensland as well. But we don't
want to be outdone by those Tasmanians and that is
one of the many reasons why we saw a brand
new tourism campaign launched here in Queensland yesterday. It's to

(07:59):
reimagine verse of Madonna's eighties tune holiday and it showcases
some of the most pristine and beautiful locations we have
on the Gold Coast. This is going to be rolled
out both internationally and locally. And David, when you look
at our background this morning, it's a pretty easy cell,
isn't it.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
Yeah, it's not quite long sets and no is it.
But it looks fantastic there and number two on the list.
And I love this hostile style accommodation. So pack your thongs,
get your chammy and get ready to sleep on the
top bunk. Guys ready to go. If you're lucky, I'll
take the floor thing.
