Speaker 1 (00:00):
We had Billie Eilish last week, and this week we
sit down with arguably her predecessor in terms of Queen
of Pop. I mean, she's probably the probably the Queen regent,
and Billy's probably the princess at the moment, although you know,
very much on her way to being queen, hard sort
of figure, and Madonna's probably know the queen mother. But anyway,

(00:20):
they're a royal family.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Big members of the royal family of Pop.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Yeah, no doubt about it, no doubt about it. And
we have.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Spoken to both of them within the span of two weeks. Yeah,
so we did do this earlier, yep. But here he
is our chat with did we call her queen in
the end? Queen of Pop?

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Not to face lady, oh, lady O the lady. Yeah,
that makes it the Lady of Gaga.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
How are you?

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Great? Cool?

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Yeah, we know, we're really well, thanks mate, We're it
is six o'clock in the morning here, so we've kind
of like it's pretty funny. We both walk up and
I was like, did you dream about Lady Gargo last night?

Speaker 3 (00:55):
What he was like, yep, is the minute you walked
down yeahred percent, Yeah, I don't think about it. I
just like, before I even talk, I'm just drinking xp us.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Yeah, that's right. It was a weird morning. We're both
out here in my backyard drinking coffee and talking about
our dreams of you, which I never thought would happened.
But here we are.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
We feel like we know you quite well actually, because
we've dreamt about you all night.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
I'm so happy for that.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Entirely platonic, by the way, Like I don't want this
to sound sick in any in any way, they were
they were.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, A friendly dream.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
A friendly dream, A friendly A very friendly dream. Sorry,
not very friendly, je friendly anyway. Hey, mate, let's talk
about Mayhem. I'm really interested because I saw an l
magazine that you said that this is the first record
whereby you kind of tapped into your persona rather than

(01:50):
the Lady Gaga persona. And I know that you've to
write where the music has come from. And I and
I've and I've heard you talk a lot about your
mental health, and I know that Gaga is you know,
and I imagine I've had a lot of mental health
issues as well. A beautiful shield at times and a
beautiful mask for you. I'm just really and obviously there's
the track Disease on there, which is about you sort

(02:11):
of confronting you in the darkness, and I just wanted
to know, like, did you was there a moment where
you got to the piano. Imagine you're in there pounding coffees,
dreaming of Will and Woody at six am in the morning.
Did you did you sit down and you were like, oh,
like this is this is Stephanie at the piano today, Like, you.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
Know, I think that what I realized is that this
like style of music that I started when I was
a teenager, it's like a huge part of who I am,
and that I like I departed in a way after
my first few studio albums. I think because part of
the job is like people are going to criticize your music,

(02:55):
and I actually love that part of it in a
way because I like, I like want to know what
people think. You know. I realized that I've always had
these kind of like, uh, these like dark dreams since
I was a kid, and my music is an expression
of those dark dreams, and I like try to find

(03:15):
a way to turn my nightmares into things that are fun.
So I think in a way, yeah, I did feel
like you know, Stephanie. But I think also I'm I'm
kind I'm both now. Yeah, I'm both now, and I
don't I don't feel like a separation between myself as
an artist and as a woman. I feel like I'm

(03:36):
a female artist yea, And I don't feel the need
to play a character in the same way. But that's
also because I integrated the character fully into my life,
if that makes sense.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Is that the same when you step
out onto the stage, Gaga? Like is it you know,
is it both of you walking out onto the stage
or is the same person walking out or is that
still Gaga?

Speaker 3 (03:59):
No, I think it's it's both because it's like, you know,
I have to bring my heart with me otherwise. I
mean some of who like Gaga became over the years
was like maybe not my favorite person.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
And you've got no control over that, like you're like,
oh jaysus, like back off, Garga, like who are you today?

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Kind of. I mean, there was like there was definitely
like ten years of my life where I was like
in my twenties and I just was like traveling and
you know, my life really revolved around my career, and
you know, it's Nice, I'm thirty eight now. It's it's
nice to like have a full life that encompasses like

(04:43):
my friendships and like my family more and being in
my life that I care about, and when I take
that person on stage with me, I can also bring
like that kind of warmth to the audience. It's both
right and because I don't know, I didn't find it
fulfilling when everything was all about my career. But I

(05:08):
do view like making music as a gift to fans
as like a huge privilege, Like I'm so excited for
my album to come out because I'm just like, I
made this thing for you that I really want. I
really should have a good time listening too.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Nice.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
I want to touch on that idea of the making
of the music. I've heard you say before that when
you are making music, you actually listen, like you are
listening to the melody that will come to you. I'm
curious to know. Is that something that you turn on
and off or does it hit you at really inconvenient times,
like the grocery shopping or something, and you'll all of
a sudden like, oh no, I've got a banger in

(05:43):
my head.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
Yeah, it can hit it inconvenient times for sure, And
when I'm I'm writing a lot, it comes a lot
more frequently. It's like so cute, like when I'm with
my man, Like like when I'm with Michael, like we'll
be doing something and if I've been working like all day,
and then I like have another idea, I'm like he like, see,

(06:06):
He's like, just go do it, like he knows, like
I have to like go write the song.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
What's the most inconvenient time that that's sort of come
out for you?

Speaker 3 (06:14):
I mean probably probably like when I'm.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
Asleep, Oh sure, yeah, yeah, it's.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
But I sleep with the phone by the bed, and
then like sometimes like Michael will just hear me being
like this, you.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
Would be in the other room so fast in my
in my house.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
Get how often? How is that always something good as well?
Because sometimes I have a little notepad by my by
my bed, and I'll write down what I think he's
a good joke or something, a good radio idea, and
then I wake up and go, oh my god, that's
the worst idea I've ever written down.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Every once in a while, yes, every once in a while,
I'll hear it back and I'm like, man, I thought
I was such a genius at three am and this
is horrible.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
Two very quick questions for you. Firstly, acting, Your acting
is amazing, obviously loved House of Girchie, Star is Born
is incredible. I saw after you did Joker most recently
that the director was saying that you and Joaquin in
a league of your own, and I just think it's
fascinating that you've just kind of, you know, sort of

(07:16):
turned around and taken over the you know, the acting realm,
and you know, to hear someone say that you're in
a league of your own with Joaquin fanish. I'm sure
Meryl Streep was furious about that. But do you are
there other people who I think Winslet was furious, but
were you kind of like, are you looking at there
are other careers that should be shaking in their boots

(07:37):
because it just feels like whatever you turn your attention to,
your dominate. So should the accountants of the world be
worried that, you know, you're going to be dominating another
industry anytime?

Speaker 3 (07:45):
So no, you know, like world domination, it's not really
like yes, Like I honestly I love making films, I
love making music, I love designing shows, I love right.
I love makeup, you know, like I'm I think the
thing I like believe in the most, like you know,

(08:07):
because I worked with Tony Bennett for many years and
he used to always say to me, like he used
to go stick with quality, kid, And I think the
thing that I believe in the most is like being
a like a craftsman, what you.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
Love working really hard.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
So I'm just excited to like make stuff and you know,
fully some people will like it. They don't always, but
you know, like all you can do is like try
to contribute to culture. And I really love my fans
and I'm excited for them to hear my new music
and see the new projects.

Speaker 1 (08:39):
I'm working on. And yeah, well we love you, Mite,
thank you.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
Thanks Will and Woodie. I'll talk to you guys soon
