Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello and welcome. It's our naberfore good gracious the round
mound of gas baggery. Charles Barkley made some comments what
is he trying to convey with these latest comments about
when he's going to step away from Turner's Sports? Also,
how will Julian Edelman do in the Fox box that

(00:21):
rocks as a broadcaster, and how is Trey Lance's career
arc looking At this point we'll take a look at
what the gambling market has to say as well. All
of that come on your way right now, have a
wonderful weekend, stay safe, and here it is our number four.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
It is a case of the broadcaster who cried.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Wolf well gom and not be getting of another hour
of the Ben Malor Show. We are in the end
everywhere at the same time as we try to press
the right button, coast to coast, border, the border and
beyond on the mast and strappingly powerful microphones of fsre

We are broadcasting live from the ti raq dot com studios.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Shoot me, Now, I can sit here.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
And do a deep dive on exhibition football, but does
anybody well, seriously, all right, do you really want to
hear analysis on a Steelers game where a bunch of
backups played for most of those teams?

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Probably?

Speaker 3 (01:55):
Not so.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
The story to lead off this hour is from the
boot Tube Tube, the most important franchise in sports television.
Sir Charles Barkley has randomly popped up on our radar.
We were not expecting this, but Charles did an interview
the round Mound of Hot Take says, chatted about his

(02:17):
broadcast future, and this came across our radar. So if
you didn't see it, perhaps not. You might remember earlier
this year, Charles Barkley signed a ten year agreement with
what we know as Turner Sports. Regardless of that, though
getting a ten year contract, boy would that be nice?
Barkley says he has no intention of completing that contract

(02:43):
and why did he sign it. He disclosed that he
blames the network executives, those meddling network executives. He said
they wanted me bark This is a quote from Barkley
said they wanted me to let people know I wasn't
leaving like next week, he said. Barkley stated, there is
no chance in hell that he will be working when

(03:05):
he is seventy zero, he said, but they said, hey,
let's make people think you're going to hang around, and
so Barkley agreed to the contract. He also stated that
he gave Turner his word for at least two more years.
The Turner NBA contract is up. At that point. A
lot of chatter that the NBA is going to move

(03:27):
to a streaming platform. They might even be VSPN and
just go completely streaming. Barkley says, the only thing, the
only thing that keeps him up at night is trying
to figure out when's the best time to walk away.
So let us discuss the question. Here is what is
Charles Barkley trying to convey with these comments. So I

(03:49):
have brown Baggett, assembly line and Tower records, and we
will interrupt this broadcast and provide you the Baba Ganooshe
will put them all together and make the Baba ganoosh.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Not toledo.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Charles Barkley, the word is abivolent. He is ambivalent when
it comes to television and life and all that. He's
sitting on the horns of a dilemma because he stands
right now as the most powerful person in sports media.
He's at the very top of the soap box, the
top of the pyramid and all that. And it is

(04:27):
the Mozart of sports Bologne and the way to describe
Charles Barkley on television. He is like the sauce and
the NBA is the chicken finger. You know how chicken
finger is the delivery vehicle of honey, mustard or barbecue sauce. Well,

(04:47):
Charles Barkley uses basketball to deliver whatever. He was like,
I don't even care about regular season the NBA, But
if TNT has a game, I'm watching. If Barkley's there,
He's larger than life. He's must see TV. He get paid,
He gets paid tons of money.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
He is the unicorn.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
He's the exception to the most athletes. To be honest,
most athletes that do television blow. They're terrible, a bunch
of meatheads. They're garbage. But Barkley is different. He is
absolutely different. And on the other hand, well, he gets
paid a lot of money. His anxiety is about staying
too long. Charles Barkley is sixty years old. A couple
of years ago he said he didn't want to work

(05:24):
when he was sixty. Now he says he doesn't want
to work when he's seventy, and he's concerned you want
to outstay his welcome. But I was thinking about it
when I was coming to the studio. Many broadcasters have
outstayed their welcome. Do you remember them washed up at
the end of their career or do you remember them

(05:45):
in their prime? Like you know, in the last fifteen
years or so, there have been some legends of broadcasting
that have stayed way till Larry King comes to mind.
He was a very famous radio television personality passed away
a few years ago. But Larry stayed around a little
too long, a little too long. He's doing infommercials and
all that. But you know, you remember if you want,

(06:08):
you choose to remember when he was at his missile.
People used the Willie Mays analogy when he was washed
up at the end of his career and all that.
But most people when they look at highlights of will
he may see the over the head catch at the
polo grounds with the giants, and they see that kind
of stuff. They don't see the other stuff. So we
activated the Malard think tank. And my advice, unsolicited to

(06:30):
Sir Charles Barkley, brown bag it, brown bag it. Stop
piper ventilating. Take three steps back, close your eyes, breathe
into the paper bag, take a deep breath.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Everything will be okay. Everything'll be fine.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
And as others have pointed out, Barkley is semi retired anyway.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
He only works one day a week.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
That's it. One day a week. He gets to hang
out with his friends. And it reminds me of Vin Scully.
Now I knew Van a little bit. Vin loved doing
Dodger games because those were his friends. He was friends
with Boyd who was the stage director on Dodger Television.
The guys on the crew that he had known, they'd

(07:15):
been there for many, many years, not as long as
he ham, of course, but that was his social network,
and so Vin loved going out there.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
They always loved baseball.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
I think he probably called enough baseball games, but he
loved being out there because that was his chance to
catch up with his friends, and he got paid for it,
and he didn't need the money per se, but he
loved it and he liked being out and Charles Barkley,
He's got the same setup.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
He seems to love it.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
Maybe it's all an act, but it seems like he
likes He's a good actor.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
If that is the case.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
All right, Moving on to another broadcasting story from the
ex pat world. Julian Edelman the latest former member of
the Patriots to join Fox Sports. Did you see this?

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (07:59):
The usually you play for the Cowboys, you end up
going to television, but the Patriots now have a run
of guys. The old white out there is going to
join the Fox NFL kickoff coming up this season, and
he will replace Sean Payton, the Broncos head coach Sean Payton.
Now Edelman in theory would be joining Tom Brady wink

(08:21):
wink nod nod who may may is a weasel word,
become a broadcaster. He's taking a sabbatical. Good luck on that.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
And Rob Gronkowski, who.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
Has appeared on some NFL on Fox broadcasts over the years.
So how will Julian Edelman do in the Fox booth,
which I guess he won't be in the booth, will
be in the studio, But how will he do?

Speaker 3 (08:46):
So?

Speaker 1 (08:46):
I don't have high expectations I just praised Charles Barkley,
but Julian Edelman's at the other end of the spectrum.
Until prove it otherwise. He is part of the assembly
line of the jockocracy, as it was called back in
the day, just another former athlete who happened to be
hired as a network sportscaster. We don't know whether Edelman's

(09:08):
any good, even though I did. But he played and
all that, And now I understand I am in the
minority on this tape, the meat head viewer. At least,
this is what the consultants say. The meathead viewer loves
the locker room talk, which a guy like Edelman can
provide grab ass. And we mentioned Barkley. Charles Barkley was

(09:32):
able to drop all of the filters, all of them.
He just lets it rip. He just lets it rip.
One hundred percent of the other athletes are unable to
do that. There's something they won't say, somewhere they won't go.
Charles Barkley has lost friendships because of stupid things he
said on television. But it's it's been amazing for he'spent

(09:53):
more money on television than he did playing. And he
was a good player for the seventy six ers and
those other teams, the Sons that he played for.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
Party shot.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
Let's go to the NFL on the field, I guess
off the field, San Francisco, Well, Santa Clair, Trey Lance
on the auctioning block. The forty nine ers have implied
that he is likely not going to be trade. It'll
just be a lowly third string quarterback. Now that's it.
The odds makers have projected which teams would be in

(10:22):
the lead in a hypothetical trade for Trey Lance. Do
you see this? No? You did not? All right, Well,
that's why we're here. From dusk to dawn. The Atlanta Falcons,
the Atlanta Falcons are the favorite to land Lance at
plus three hundred, followed by the Minnesota Vikings because he's
from the state of Minnesota. He's at Minnesota and Ice

(10:46):
at plus three fifty. Then after that you got the
Buccaneers because they don't have a quarterback, the Rams because
Matthew Stafford's hanging on by a thread, and the Washington
Commandos rounding out the top five. So how is Trey
Lance's career arc looking at this point? Man?

Speaker 2 (11:03):
You might want to cover your eyes. You might want
to cover your eyes.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
How about the forty nine ers though they thought they
were buying Apple and Amazon stock when they put all
their marbles on the table to get Trey Lance in
that trade with the Miami Dolphins, and they're like, oh man,
we're gonna be We're gonna find all the trials and
tribulations will be okay, nothing to worry about. And now

(11:28):
instead of getting Apple or Amazon stock, they ended up
with Tower records and Blockbuster video is what they have.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
And a little Enron, little Enron tossed in there.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
Just google it if you don't know what that is.
But the Trey Lance space capsule was on the launching pad.
Forty nine ers, Shanahan's got the reputation of knowing what
to do with quarterbacks and all that Lance ready to
enter the orbit, ready to enter the orbit out in
the Cosmos. And then there was a mouth that caused

(12:01):
the booster rocket to land a little off target and
crash down into the water in the Mighty Pacific, just
off the coast there in San Francisco, a few hundred
feet from the launch pad. And at this point wherever
Trey Lance ends up, whether he stays with the forty
nine ers or he goes off into the wild blue yonder.

(12:23):
It is a salvage and recovery mission at this point.
That's the reality of the situation. It is the Ben
Mahlor Show and if you would like to be part

and got his number.

got the number. We booked him on the show. I
have the Boston Haters number. But I don't think that
that's good anymore. He's I think he's not around. Tom Brenneman,
I have his number. That's taboo. He's available, he is available.

right now? Wake him up?

Speaker 5 (15:10):
No, I'm good.

Speaker 1 (15:11):
Probably not, Yeah, that would be a bad idea. That's
a few of them, Eddie, big name phone anybody.

Speaker 5 (15:17):
I got a bunch of hockey people.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
Kenny Alberts.

Speaker 5 (15:20):
That's that's probably my most famous one. Kenny albert I.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
Got his number. Two. Yeah, Vernon Davis, former NFL tight end,
Vernon Davis in the phone.

Speaker 5 (15:29):
But that can't win with him, can't do it.

Speaker 1 (15:32):
I know he was on the podcast Most famous person
in uh I Alowa Sam's phone.

Speaker 6 (15:38):
I always say, if I can actually make sure I got
the right button there turned my mic on, not Eddie's
or vice versa. Most famous person in my phone, man
be Moncey.

Speaker 1 (15:52):
You got her number in there?

Speaker 7 (15:53):
No, I don't know. Maybe uh Brady Quinn, Brady Quinn.

Speaker 6 (15:58):
Yeah, Moncey is Yes, I have Monci's number, don't I.

Speaker 1 (16:02):
Don't have her number. I think that's extra. I got
Lenny Dykster's number.

Speaker 7 (16:06):
I have Lenny Diuster's number.

Speaker 5 (16:07):
Two. Yeah, don't give Lenny Moncey's number.

Speaker 7 (16:09):
I have Lincoln Kennedy.

Speaker 1 (16:10):
I was, Sam, do you know the story Lenny Dykster
wanted to come in studio and hang out with us
and Eddie. He said he would not allow that.

Speaker 5 (16:18):
He didn't that's that's that's a lie.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
You didn't want here.

Speaker 5 (16:21):
I advised against it. I didn't say I wouldn't allow it.
I have no power to not allow him to come
in here. If you want him in, I said, I
think that that's a bad idea.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
I think he's upset with me. I don't know. I
have Jimmy Ray from Tampa Bay's number.

Speaker 5 (16:33):
He's dead.

Speaker 1 (16:34):
I have his number.

Speaker 3 (16:34):
Though.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
I have a rule when someone dies, I honor them.
My tribute is I leave their number.

Speaker 7 (16:40):
On my phone.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (16:41):
I did the same.

Speaker 1 (16:42):
Yeah. My my little tribute to people that pass away,
I leave their number of my phone. So Coop, big names, Coop,
big Hollywood star, big name on your phone.

Speaker 7 (16:51):
Anybody that's funny, I think.

Speaker 6 (16:52):

I think the most famous one probably Steve Spurrier.

Speaker 1 (17:01):

Speaker 5 (17:03):

Speaker 6 (17:04):

Bruce Almighty and Ace vent Tura, And so, I.

Speaker 7 (17:17):

political world. So he's said very well fro himself.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
All right, is Ben mal show.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
We've now just played grab ass for the last eight minutes,
and isn't that absolutely wonderful and amazing and all that? Now,

There is no excuse to miss it. Let's go to
Angry Bill.

Speaker 7 (19:17):
I think he's gone. He's gone. Me let me.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
Angry Bill has has left the building. Was that somebody,
unless he just called back to this, was he offended
that somebody put his name in a joke about an
elevator and making out in an elevator. It's possible he
was offended.

Speaker 7 (19:33):
By Yeah, he didn't come back.

Speaker 1 (19:34):
Okay, thank god he's called back. The show can continue.
Hello Angry Bill, Hello, guys, how you doing this show?

Speaker 3 (19:46):
Your time thing obviously is a great disappointment for baseball,
but the guy's a young guy twenty nine, thirty years old.
He's gonna take the path of the John Saltz. He
can go ahead and rehab his arm. He can keep
hitting and then he can turn himself into a relief pitcher,
possibly a closer, but he can still do his pitching

(20:08):
because he's you know, two operations on his arm. A
third one would be very very tough.

Speaker 1 (20:14):
Well, actually two. The if you look at the comps,
if you've had two Tommy John operations in five years,
you're pretty much toast.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
At this point.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
So well, you can think all you want, but name
the guy that's had to Tommy John surgeers in five
years that's been dominant when they came back. I'll wait
for that. He didn't have two in five years in
a five year window.

Speaker 3 (20:41):
Well, what do you have in five and a half. Well,
you think your elbow knows how many years it is?

Speaker 1 (20:47):
Yes, the elbow, the actually the elbow. I talked to
my elbows all the time. I talked to my left
elbow and then I talked to my right elbow. And
they are very smart elbows. I have the smartest elbows,
and most people have smart elbows.

Speaker 3 (21:00):
He give me a break. He can do it.

Speaker 5 (21:02):
Well, he can do it.

Speaker 2 (21:03):
He's going to try to do it. But the Otani rule.

Speaker 1 (21:07):
They'd have to tweak the Otani rule because I don't
think it applies to relief pitchers. The Otani rule is
if you're a starting pitcher and then you can move
to become a designated hitter. But if you go to
the bullpen. I think that's if you you're a relief pitcher.
I think you're it's different.

Speaker 3 (21:23):
Oh he's going to try it though, right. Do you
think he's not going to try it? No?

Speaker 1 (21:28):
I think he's gonna come back as a starting pitcher
and try to pitch again, because that's where the money is.
You don't get paid a lot of money as a
closer compared to a starter.

Speaker 3 (21:36):
Do you think this guy's worried about money?

Speaker 1 (21:38):
Come on, yes, everyone worries about money. You'd be shocked,
I do. I knew some when I was around the Dodgers.
There are some really rich guys that were always worried
about money, and they were total tightwads. You'd think they
wouldn't because they had a ton of money.

Speaker 3 (21:51):
Then what's that there's no many more of a tight
wad than you.

Speaker 1 (21:55):
Well, that's true. But I have a reason to be
a tight wad. But those guys didn't have a reason
to be a tight wad, so it's a little different.

Speaker 2 (22:01):
All right, thank you, I'm done with you.

Speaker 7 (22:02):
This is a boy.

Speaker 1 (22:03):
You're boring me.

Speaker 2 (22:04):
This calls barring. Hang up on you, Barring.

Mayor Parker the snow Dog writes this as you guys
don't have Parker's number. No, I don't have Parker, Mayor
Parker his phone number.

Speaker 5 (23:00):
Yeah, i'd like to I'd like to think he's joking
that Parker doesn't have a cell phone. But actually I'm
not sure about that.

Speaker 2 (23:06):
He's Mayor Parker.

Speaker 5 (23:08):
I know he has a more interesting life than I.

Speaker 7 (23:10):
I do have that phone number.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
I do not have that number, but let me tell
you that number would fit really nice next to myself.
I have a celebrity fan wing on my phone. I
got Clipper Daryl and Marlin's Man and Mayor Parker the
snow Dog would slide right in there, the big.

Speaker 5 (23:25):
Name because famous than those two guys.

Speaker 1 (23:27):
That's wrong, It's incorrect. JJ from Renton writes, and he says,
make sure my daughter is safety. A celebrity caller, JJ
from Renton, who doesn't call a show anymore at his
says his daughter is down the street from us there
at Universal Studios. So Joe McDonald, Oh, I have big
I have a big nasty Joe McDonald.

Speaker 10 (23:45):
La.

Speaker 5 (23:46):
I heard a good story about him the other day.

Speaker 1 (23:48):
Oh really, what's the story, because I wonder if I've heard.

Speaker 5 (23:50):
It that when Wayne Gretzky got traded. There was something involving.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
From Edmonton to Yeah.

Speaker 5 (23:59):
Yeah, one of the the of the executives for the
Oilers when they played a game against the Kings, and
I guess one of the Kings kind of the media
liaison guy was cheering or something, and the one of
the executives for the Oilers went after him, and Joe
McDonald stepped in and grabbed him and kept him, kept
him away from him.

Speaker 1 (24:19):
Is that right? Yeah, Joe the famous Joe McDonald's story
at the coliseum for a LA Raider game early on
in Jim Rome's career, he apparently picked Rome up, uh
and kind of tossed him against the wall.

Speaker 5 (24:32):
And well, as you well know, Joe McDonald was a giant,
giant person and Jim Rome is very small. Yes, that
would be very easy to see that happening.

Speaker 2 (24:42):
I heard. I don't know.

Speaker 1 (24:43):
I wasn't there. That was before my time, but I
heard that that was like the last time Rome went
to the press box.

Speaker 7 (24:48):
But why does everybody want to beat up Jim Rome.

Speaker 2 (24:50):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (24:52):
You knew him back in the early early days, right.

Speaker 1 (24:54):
Ben I did? Yeah, as an interne Yeah, yeah, And
I was actually there the day after that famous thing
with Jim Everett where they had the throwdown, and they
were like every TV station was outside the radio station
trying to interview Jim, and he did not. He's just
trying to figure out how to sneak out of the

(25:14):
out of the station. But that was quite quite the day, man,
and it would have been even bigger now probably right? Yeah,
sure for social media?

Speaker 5 (25:24):
Does does Jim Everetts to listen to the show?

Speaker 1 (25:27):
I have not heard from Jim, but Jim has. He
was a listener for a while. I don't know if
he still does, but yeah, I should check in with him.
I had, you know, Jim, I have his contact information.
I should see the old Ram quarterback back back in
the day. Let's uh, let's say hello Marcel, Marcell can
