When you think about Pat Summitt's time as the University of Tennessee head coach, you think of championships. And you might believe that for her, it was about winning championships. However, that was only the result, what she was really doing was growing young women into champions and leaders in life.
John Wooden was famed for his precise detail in all that he did. He developed his Pyramid that emphasized the cornerstones of industriousness and enthusiasm that the Pyramid would be built on. He not only taught it to his players, he lived it every day of his life. And as he developed the pyramid in his last 12 years of coaching he would win 10 National Championships. But his focus was not on the wins, it was making sure that the young men who played for him, would demonstrate great leadership.
I have to be honest, this book is so full of wisdom, that I cannot possibly remember it all. I want to desperately because every lesson in the book is something I want to live by too. It took them years, even decades, to master their coaching. In the end, it requires work. And by the end of the book I found myself truly understanding I have a lot more work to do.
