Perched on the toe of the Great Dividing Range, where Dja Dja Wurrung, Wada Wurrung and Wurundjeri lands meet, lies the Wombat Forest. This 70,000 ha patch of bushland harbours the headwaters of 7 major rivers and hosts over 550 species of native flora and fauna, many of which are rare, and some which occur nowhere else on Earth. In the last 250 years it’s been mined, logged, grazed, burned and battered by storms, yet it still grows on - perhaps a little crooked, but still loved and lived in by many. But now, as we turn to face the gathering storms of climate change, we are faced with some questions: Where do we belong, as humans, in the forest system? How do we care for the places we love as we navigate the turbulence of climate upheaval? What has been lost, what is left, and where to from here? Big Questions. We wouldn’t presume to have the answers. But all the same we invite you to ponder as you wander through this landscape of perspectives, each face and voice another thread to stitch into the stories we tell of the Wombat Forest.
