I love the music, love the time of the year.

(01:14):
fun over the next few weeks as well, and of
course the games get going tomorrow, the real games. Of
course we've got playing games already this year as well.
But let's get right to it. Our guy Gary Parris
joining us from CBS Sports cbssports dot com. I'm on
College Basketball podcast and I can tell you this, Gary,
for a fact, I know you've got more listeners and
(01:36):
people downloading the podcast because our afternoon producer Jackson Feltz
rolled into the station on Monday. He's like, I'm already
an hour in to listen to Parish and Norlander. This
is the year for me. This is the year for me.
So we're we're making we're making new listeners out of
the folks out here.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
Gary, Well, I appreciate it. I am still a little
confused how I ended up in a place where people
actually go out of their way to hear me say
anything about anything. I can't get anybody who lives in
my house to subscribe to that same approach. But outside
of my house it seems to be going okay, and
it's I'm really lucky. It's never never lost on me that,
(02:12):
you know, I grew up watching sports and like that
was a real passion for me, and now I get
to make a living watching sports and talking about them
to the best of my ability. Anytime somebody hits play
for even a second, that's that's.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
Meaningful to me. So tell everybody else.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
To think you I will, I will.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
All right, we're gonna get to brackets in the second
segment and all of that. And we're a few days
removed from selection Sunday, obviously, but the story really was
was North Carolina and the selection of the tar Heels
in I think kind of Texas too, to be honest
with you, we talked about them last week, and I know,
listening to the podcast, you and Norlander both thought they
might be done as of Friday night last week. So
(02:52):
it's it's but North Carolina is an interesting one. They've
already played. Doesn't really matter results at this point because
once you're in that has nothing to do. I don't
think I think you degree with mean it has nothing
to do with whether you deserve to be in once
you are in and what the results are at that point,
I thought it was an interesting thing you guys brought
up on the podcast because this is a bigger picture
deal and you know college football playoff committee has you know,
(03:15):
some issues as well. But what a bad look I
think for everyone. And you brought it up, like having
the commission or the chair of the selection committee being
a sitting athletic director for a known basketball power happened
to be a bubble team this year, and there's relationships
and even though he's not in the room, there's still
an influence that has to probably change. I think that
(03:36):
would be the biggest issue.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
It should change because it became the biggest storyline out
of Selection Sunday, and I'm glad you put that the
way you put it, by explaining how anything that happens
after Selection Sunday has nothing to do with what should
have happened on Selection Sunday. I can't stand it when teams,
you know, get into the bracket, the world screams.
Speaker 5 (03:59):
They should have been there.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Then they win a game or two, and the counter
argument against the world is see now, look, they're winning games.
Speaker 5 (04:07):
They belong the whole time.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Well, there are teams that we left out of this
bracket this season that could win games in the bracket
if you put them in there. It just comes down
to did you deserve to be there or not? And
in most people's eyes, North Carolina did not. So then
it becomes a massive story, not just because North Carolina's
in and most people thought they shouldn't be, but because
the chair of the committee is the City North Carolina
(04:29):
athletic director, who, by the way, quite literally this isn't
just message board stuff. It's true, gets a significant bonus,
more money than some people driving around listening to you
and I right now making a year. Bubba Cunningham will
get a bonus for that much money just for North
Carolina being in the field. And so they can talk
(04:50):
all they want about protocols and rules and regulations and
how when North Carolina comes up he leaves the room
and he's not involved in those discussions. The influence still exists.
I mean, think about if every time in anybody's workplace,
every time a very specific conversation came up, you had
(05:10):
to leave the room for some reason, but everybody in
the room knows you're coming right back soon as this
conversation's over. Everybody in the room knows. Whatever decision they make,
you're going to realize it pretty quickly, and it's either
in favor for them or not. So the influence exists
whether anybody is corrupt or not. The influence is still
just there because there's humans involved.
Speaker 5 (05:33):
So I want to be clear about this.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
I do not think Bubba Cunningham did anything out of
line to help get North Carolina into the bracket. I
find him to be a man of solid character. I've
known him for a long time. I like him on
a personal level. I don't think he did anything wrong.
I haven't heard anybody say they think he did anything wrong,
not any sensible, legitimate person. But the perception of it
(05:59):
is bad. It just looks bad. And that's why I
would be in favor of getting a whole new selection committee,
and one that doesn't involve athletic directors are people who
actually work for any sort of conference or university.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
I don't know why we decided.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
To have athletic directors on this committee to begin with, honestly,
probably because when we first started this, there wasn't as
much money involved. It wasn't as complicated or sophisticated. It
was just like, hey, go in there and get in
a room and pick some teams and let's go. Now,
we have all sorts of data points available and hundreds
(06:35):
of people all over the world actually doing the exercise
in real time, so we kind of know what this
is supposed to look like based off what you tell
us is important. And at bracketatrix dot com, most brackets
didn't have North Carolina in, but then North Carolina gets in.
Every bracket had West Virginia in, then West Virginia gets
left out. And that's how you get the governor of
a state calling press conferences on the day after selection Sunday.
(06:58):
The way to clean this up it unconnected people to
make these decisions, because here's the truth. Athletic directors have
tons of skills, different ones in different places. But I
don't want to be I don't want to discount the
talent that.
Speaker 5 (07:13):
Goes with the job.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
But they have no special skill as it pertains to
building brackets.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
That's just something you can teach anybody to do.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
I could teach my wife how to build a bracket
in two weeks if she would just pay attention to me.
You don't even have to watch basketball. You just have
to know that what matters and have access to all
of the data. And so I would get a bunch
of new people, not athletic directors, so that we never
have to have these conversations again, because right now you
and I should be talking about the tournament, and instead
(07:42):
we were talking about the controversy connected to the tournament,
and it didn't have to be there as it is.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
I got about a minute left of the segment.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
Garier as it is, though, I think what we saw
with this year's especially the bubble this year, there's just
again absolutely no compelling reason outside of money for athletic directors,
athletic departments, TV networks, et cetera, to expand the tournament.
Like there's just none. Like we have two teams. I
don't care how good the SEC is. One of your
colleagues was mentioning it on on the broadcast on Sunday
(08:08):
on the inside on the CBS Sports Network.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
You got two teams that are six and twelve in conference.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
At some point wins have to matter and like that,
just so I think, but it won't matter because I
can scream from the Mountain tops.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
You can as well.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
We don't need more teams in, but we'll probably down
that road at some point anyway.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
Yeah, we don't need expansion, but we will probably get it.
It will not ruin the sport, but it will mess
up the regular season. Because this is the best way
to put it. Indiana was on the bubble all the
way through selection Sunday, and a lot of people thought
they should have been in the field. Indiana's fans tried
to wanted to fire their coach, chanted it mid season.
The coach actually resigned mid season under pressure, and that
(08:47):
team still had a shot to make the NCI of
Blake Tournament. North Carolina had thirteen swings against quadron one
opponents connected on one of them, one in twelve in
quadrat one. That team still made the INCID Ofbla Tournament.
If we're considered wing power conference programs that fire their
coaches or force them to resign, and considering and including
power conference programs that are one and twelve and quadrat one,
(09:09):
the field is big enough. We're already putting average teams in.
We don't need to put more.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
I agree, all right, that's Gary Parrish.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
When we come back we're gonna go through and one
of my favorite things with Gary to talk about, and
we've done it for a while. I think it's the
most one of the most important things. When you're looking
at your brackets, we're watching the games. Who was underseeded?
Speaker 6 (09:26):
Like?
Speaker 2 (09:26):
Who was under like? Because, as Gary's mentioned before, if
you're Auburn, you probably aren't too thrilled with seeing a
team playing relatively a home game that's an eight to
nine if they win that eight to nine matchup, Gonzaga
underseedd probably if you're if you're Houston, you're probably Calvin
Samson going really like a team that's made to the
Sweet sixteen nine straight years, we might see them in
the second round. We'll talk about underseated teams. We'll talk
(09:47):
about the one seeds and some of the great stories.

Gary Parrish's eight eleven am Pacific time, Memphis taken on
Colorado State, part of the new pac twelve. We'll get
to that in a second. That's in the West region.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
Gary.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Let's start first with the four number one seeds. You've
had them pretty much all along. You Toltal Sovereign would
be the number one overall seed. Didn't really matter what
they do scuffling down the end of the road. Florida
gets in there as well as the number one seats.
That's two from the a SEC, Duke and Houston the others.
Who's the strongest in the weakest of the one seeds?
Speaker 4 (11:21):
I mean, I think if you tell me Cooper Flags
one hundred percent, Duke looks like the strongest.
Speaker 5 (11:25):
They've been blowing out everybody.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
Now we're going to find out in this intitible tournament,
or at least there's a theory that we're going to
find out this simple the tournament. How much of Duke
looking unbelievable in January and February and early March.
Speaker 5 (11:38):
Was Duke is unbelievable or the ACC is so bad?
Speaker 4 (11:42):
Like keep in mind, Duke, like finished number one at
can Palm, got a number one seed, nineteen and one
in the ACC.
Speaker 5 (11:51):
That's amazing.
Speaker 4 (11:52):
Clemson went eighteen and two in the ACC. Louisville went
eighteen and two in the ACC. I say this as
respectfully as I could say it, But that Louisville team
and that Clemson team both they're good. But they shouldn't
be going eighteen and two in a good ACC. The
league is bad, and so I think Duke is legit.
But if we find Duke in some fights early in
(12:13):
the tournament that they haven't experienced lately, it'll probably be
a reminder that that ACC is down bad this season.
Speaker 5 (12:20):
But healthy Duke has looked great.
Speaker 4 (12:22):
I am glad that the committee gave Auburn the number
one overall scene because it followed what it is they
say they're supposed to do. Not get caught up in
recency bias, not get up and how you get caught
up in how you're playing lately.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
But look at the entire body of work from November.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
Through Selection Sunday, and then say who's accomplished the most,
who's done the most? And in college basketball the season,
it was clearly Auburn. Even though the Tigers did lose
three of their final four games heading into Selection Sunday,
they had two more quater one wins than anybody else
in the country. They were the only team in the
country that had zero losses to teams outside of the
top twenty of the NET. I just don't love the
way that they've been playing, But I did pick them
(12:59):
to win the national champion. So I'm gonna stick with
them because I think I can rationalize it. If your
question was, okay, but they lost three of their final
four games before selection Sunday. Doesn't that concern you, especially
when no team has ever lost like that going into
the tournament and then won the tournament. Yes, all of
that concerns me. I think there might be an explanation
for it. Auburn was so clearly the best team in
(13:20):
the country and blowing out basically everybody for months, and
then the second it changed is the second that's happened
when they secured the outright SEC title. And I went
on TV and everywhere else, not just me. I don't
mean to make myself more important than I am, but
people went on TV and was like, Auburn's got everything
locked up. They're the number one overall. See, they could
lose every game going forward. It's locked up.
Speaker 5 (13:41):
Their own coach went on TV and said, we got
everything locked up. Well, what does that do to the mindset?
Speaker 4 (13:46):
You've been preaching urgency and everything matters, every dribble, every practice,
and then suddenly you're telling your team we're good, We've
done it. I think they just slipped a little bit
and they got caught, and they're playing good teams and
they lost refocused before you get this round sixty four
game going. I love what Auburn has been throughout the season.
I'm gonna trust him to get back to that.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
Let's talk underseated teams. Were just going to go with
the eight nines just for around, because I think that's
how it affects. The one seeds are affected the most
by the eight and nine seeds. Auburn will take the
take on the winner of Louisville Creighton in Lexington, Kentucky.
If Louisville wins at and they're playing an hour and
a half away from their campus, they'll have a home
game effectively in terms of just proximity. We'll see what
(14:27):
the crowd looks like against number one seed Auburn. In
the West, Number one Florida will take on the winner
of wait for this, Oklahoma out of the great sec
and some team named Yukon with the self procramed greatest
coach in the history college basketball, mister Hurley, and a
two time defending national champions. In the Midwest, Number one Houston,
I mentioned it. Number eight gun Zaga, Number nine Georgia.
(14:49):
That's the winner there takes on number one Houston and
Duke in the East takes on Mississippi State Baylor winner.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
That's the eight nine matchup.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
Of those eight to nine teams, who was underseeded the
most and who has the the biggest opportunity to knock
off a one seed.
Speaker 4 (15:03):
I think technically there are two schools that I think
should have real complaints, and that's Gonzaga and Louisville. Louisville
and Auburn should have a complaint about Louisville as well.
Auburn is given the number one overall see the Innsplit
tournament because they had the best season of anybody, and
they will have to play a de facto road game
in the round of thirty two.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
If Louisville wins that first game. That should not happen.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
I mean, we're talking about seventy minutes from Louisville's campus
like that.
Speaker 5 (15:29):
You should not be playing Louisville.
Speaker 4 (15:30):
Kentucky in Kentucky in the round of thirty two if
you're the number one overall seed. And I asked Bubba
Cunningham about that on Sunday after the bracket was released,
and he acknowledged that they noticed it and acknowledged that
they considered it, but then just still went that direction.
The other issue, if you're Pat Kelsey, is not On
(15:50):
one hand, you're thrilled to be close to home, but
you're an eight seed. You shouldn't be playing a one
seat Louisville. I've got fifteenth in my top twenty five
and one. Their strength of record, which is a metric
the committee uses, is tenth in the country, wins above
bubble seventeenth.
Speaker 5 (16:05):
You ready for this.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
You can't find a number predictive metrics, results based metrics.
There is no number that justifies Louisville being an eight seed.
I don't know how that happened. It's I guess it's
an advantage of being close to home, but how much
if you've got to play what the committee called the
best team in the country in a time when you
shouldn't be playing them yet. I think Louisville got screwed
with Gonzaga. I understand it more, but I still think
(16:30):
it's wrong. Now, this is one where I think it's complicated,
and I don't know that there's a perfect solution. But
we've reached a point where there's so much data available,
and some of the data is trying to accomplish two
different things. Predictive metrics is largely based on efficiency numbers,
scoring margins, that kind of stuff. The results based metrics
(16:50):
are just like, hey, man, who'd you beat? Where'd you
beat them, who'd you lose to? Where that happened. So
Gonzaga had really rough results based metrics, didn't win a
lot of big games, but the predictive metrics kept them
in the top ten all season because they blew out
bad teams almost without exception, and even their losses were
mostly close losses. So the question becomes, what do you
(17:11):
do with Gonzaga? And I think this is where I
settle on it. I think if you put me in
the room, here's where I would settle on with Gonzaga.
If we're just talking about did the Zags belong in
the bracket or not, let's talk about results based metrics.
Let's talk about the resume, the quad one stuff, and
let's conclude obviously they got the auto bid, so like whatever.
(17:33):
But once you've got to figure out how to get
them in the bracket if you need to, let's talk about.
Speaker 5 (17:36):
Results based metrics. Then once you know.
Speaker 4 (17:39):
They're in the bracket, and as soon as they won
the WCC Tournament, we knew they were. I think it's
time to start at least paying attention to the predictive metrics,
not to be fair to Gonzaga, but to be fair
to Gonzaga's opponent, because right now there is a scenario
where Kelvin Sampson just secured another number one seed in
the Incitaba tournament, and in the second round he will
(18:01):
have to play a team that is top ten in
the net, top ten kin Palm, top ten in the
predictive matters. I don't want to punish a one seed
by giving them a top ten kim Pom opponent in
the round of thirty two. What I would do if
I were in the committee, I would say, we're not
going to start finagling and manipulating the bracket to get
Gonzaga up to where the predictive metrics say they should be,
(18:22):
because that would be a three seed that's not where
they belong based on the resume. But let's get them
out of the eight nine game just so we're not
Just so nobody has to say, why is a one
seed having to play a top ten kN Pom team
in the round of thirty two, put them in the
in the make them a seventh seed, give them to
a two seed, and you can always tell the two seed, well,
you should have been a one and you wouldn't have
to be dealing with this. But you can't tell a
(18:44):
one anything. A one did what it was supposed to
do to be the one seed, and you're still giving
them a really tough matchup in the round of thirty two. Theoretically,
I would try to avoid that. I think the way
the Committee mishandled Gonzaga is a detriment to Gonzaga but
also a detriment to Houston.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Do you like on Zaga against Georgia? What should zag
fans know about the Bulldogs? The other Bulldogs?
Speaker 4 (19:05):
They're just a SEC team that is good, not great,
and has been sort of lost in the conversation all
season long, because when you were talking about the SEC,
it wasn't just that they had fourteen SEC NCAA tournament
caliber teams.
Speaker 5 (19:22):
It's that they had multiple legitimate.
Speaker 4 (19:26):
National championship contenders at the tip top of the sport.
So I can just tell you from planning segments on
the Ion College Basketball Podcast, it's like, all right, SEC here,
let's start with Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Kentucky's an amazing story.
Look at what Chris Beard's doing at Old Miss. You
almost never got to Mike White and Georgia. There was
(19:46):
a time where I realized Vanderbilt was good, and it
was like, we haven't said a word about them all season,
and they got a first year coach and they're good.
Speaker 5 (19:52):
So Georgia is the classic, not.
Speaker 4 (19:55):
Good enough to matter in any sort of meaningful way,
meaningful way in the SEC, but a team that is
clearly good enough to be in the bracket because they
got here pretty safely. I do think Gonzaga beats them.
I'm just gonna trust the I know the Zags didn't
get all the wins, but they were in every game.
I do believe the team's better than the resume, better
than the seed. I think Gonzaga gets moves on, but
(20:17):
the issue becomes and I thought winning the WCC Tournament
would keep them out of this. But once they get
in that eight to nine game, trying to go to
a tenth street Sweet sixteen becomes very difficult because you're
gonna have to play a one seed in the round.
Of thirty two and one seeds by definition have been
excellent almost all season long.
Speaker 5 (20:33):
So I would never rule it out, but I do have.
Speaker 4 (20:35):
Gonzaga bowing out in the round of thirty two and
snapping that sweet sixteen streak of appearances.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
In Gary Perris joining a CBS Sports SCIGN college basketball
podcast Stn't Call Me Casino. In Twin Peaks Bring Us
Bracketology Show West, Number one Florida will take on the
winner of eight to nine eight Yukon two time to
fitty champions and number nine Oklahoma out of the Still
sounds weird to say this the SEC, but how much
how concerned should Floria be about their second round matchup?
Speaker 4 (21:05):
They're playing so well right now that I don't think
you you know, if you're worried about a second round
matchup when you just won the SEC tournament, when you're
ranked second at ken Pom, like you're getting a little
too nervous from your own being.
Speaker 5 (21:17):
It could be difficult just because you're.
Speaker 4 (21:19):
Staring across and it's Dan Hurley and it's Alex Carabin
and they are you know, the program at least that
won back to back championships. If that's who you end
up playing, but it's not the same team. It hasn't
been the same team all season. We've been trying to
talk ourselves into this since before it even started. They
lost four starters from a national championship team.
Speaker 5 (21:41):
That is a lot.
Speaker 4 (21:43):
I probably wouldn't have had them preseason top ten if
just left to my own thoughts. But I sort of
did give been Dan Hurley the benefit of the doubt
because he kept saying this team might be more talented
than my last one, and it didn't sing or sound
true to me. But who am I to argue with
Dan Hurley about the roster he's assembled and is looking
at every day in the gym. If he's saying out
(22:04):
loud publicly, this might be the best team we've had,
this might be my most talented roster. I was like, well,
I don't know how I can just say no, it's
not like then I'm arguing with, as you put it,
the best coach in the FN sport.
Speaker 5 (22:14):
Who am I to do that?
Speaker 4 (22:16):
But it's from Maui and every game since then, it's
been clear this team is not the most talented team
he's ever had. It's not as talented the last season.
It's not even very good. They're a borderline top twenty
five team and have mostly been that all season. I
would always give him a chance, just because it is
Dan Hurley, and you never know if that mojo just
(22:38):
sort of captured something. But I think it is more
likely if Florida plays you kind of the round of
thirty two. I think it's more likely Florida beats them
by twelve than it is that Yukon beats them at all.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
Gary Parris joining US.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
Okay, this is the part I hate because I know
people listening that I'm in brackets with and everything else,
and they're not aware of all these things, and now
you're going to tell them all these things they need
to know, so you know that. That's the catch twenty
two here. But what we know about Cooper Flag's injury,
He's gonna play.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
That's fine.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
Whether he plays Friday or not in a one to
sixteen matchup ormains to be seen. But there are two
other big injuries I think to jump off the page
for high seeded teams, Let's talk about Iowa State and
your Memphis team. Both of those are having significant injury issues.
How are those teams affected?
Speaker 4 (23:21):
Well, I would say it's official and I don't want
to say devastating, but not good. Kashawn Gilbert was at
certain points in the season their best player and he's
just been ruled out. He's done for the season. It's
over for him. So Iowa State announced that shortly after
the bracket was done. Certain the committee would have loved
to have that information before the bracket was done, but
(23:42):
the reason they didn't have that information before the bracket
was done was because Iowa State didn't want them to.
They wanted to get the best seed possible. As for Memphis,
nothing official about Tyree Hunter. He of course started his
career at Iowa State, played at Texas. He's played in
instant lay tournament games, played in power conferences, and has
been a top three player at Memphis. This season, suffered
(24:03):
a foot injury, just a fluky thing, literally just backing
up on the court and stepped on a teammate's foot
and immediately grimacedon pain, went to the locker room, came
back in a boot, did not play in the AC
Tournament title game.
Speaker 5 (24:18):
I just tell you, living here, I haven't.
Speaker 4 (24:22):
Heard a single person say a single thing that makes
me optimistic that Tyree Hunter is going to play college
basketball for the Tigers in this NCAA tournament.
Speaker 5 (24:29):
So if Memphis is going to try to win a second.
Speaker 4 (24:32):
Into a tournament game ever under Penny go to the
sweet sixteen for the first time since two thousand and nine,
probably going to have to do it without one of
the better guards in the country, somebody who's been really
impactful for you this season. And that's unfortunate, but you
know it's not unique to Memphis. These types of things
do happen. But Penny, this was a big year where
(24:52):
he set himself up to advance in the bracket by
getting a five seed and now, in part because of
the injury to Tyres Hunter, the there are actually underdogs
to a twelve seed Colorado State in the round of
sixty four.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
Wild stuff. Gary Paris joining a few more minutes with Gary.
All right, let's get your thoughts on all because every
year there's you know, across the country, there's the popular
Cinderella picks, the teams of the underdogs. Somebody's gonna take
a run when the bracket comes out. You know, when
I listened to Ion College basketball, and by the way,
we should just point out you guys are breaking down everything.
(25:24):
Just go there's new episodes dropping minutes by minutes. It's crazy,
it's good, it's awesome, great listening for all of us
like Jackson Feltz, our afternoon producer and me at the
gym and others. But let's talk about some of the
popular Cinderella stories McNeice, Liberty. You see san Diego, Who
am I missing? And who do you like as a
Cinderella to make a run and why?
Speaker 5 (25:46):
Well, I don't know that.
Speaker 4 (25:48):
I like you see san Diego to make a run,
but I less like the story. I think this is
the fifth year they've been playing Division I basketball. I
think some people hear San Diego and they're like, oh, yeah, no,
not that san Diego. Different san dieg Go, and you
just so you get this first round matchup where it's
literally the last team you saw win before the selection show.
(26:09):
Michigan win's the Big ten tournament, Big ten, Michigan, big brand.
You see San Diego match it up against him, you
might not even know who that is. You might not.
Speaker 5 (26:18):
Even heard of that.
Speaker 4 (26:19):
And Michigan's just a two and a half point favorite,
which speaks to how good you see San Diego is
in the predictive markets. San Diego is in the thirties
at Kin pom Strong computer numbers. So it's just interesting
you see big ten tournament champs against school you never
heard of, and it's a one possession game in the
betting markets. The school that I have going deeper than
(26:42):
say any other non Power conference school in this bracket,
and take it for what it's worth, probably nothing, But
I've got VCU out of the Atlantic ten, going all
the way to the Atlantic, all the way to the
Elite eight and losing to Duke in the Elite eight
of that East Regional. This is a VCU team that
because I'm in studio CBS Sports Network and we have
a lot of A ten games, I've seen them fifteen times.
(27:04):
I've seen them in person. Obviously, it's a recognizable brand
because they went to the twenty eleven Final four and
have been consistently good with really good coaches Shaka Smart
most notably, but Will Wade coached there. Ryan Odam as
the coach there now. Mike Rhodes was the coach there previously.
(27:25):
This is an A ten team, but they're the A
ten champs, A ten tournament champs, and they got Power
Conference players. Max Shoga was transferring to Villanova after last season,
like literally committed to Villanova and then Ryan Odam, the
VCU coach, went back to Booster has got more NIL
money and they were able to buy him back to campus.
But that's a Villanova level player. Joe Bamasel played in
(27:47):
power conferences. He's now at VCU, so they've got yeah,
maybe a mid major league, but power conference players.
Speaker 5 (27:53):
They've won a lot of games.
Speaker 4 (27:55):
Alabama has possible injury issues with Grant Nelson. I'll see
VCU after that magical run in twenty eleven doing something
similar again this season.
Speaker 2 (28:05):
Well, and we should point out and I saw this
Curtesy of who my good friends at CBS Sports. By
the way, round of sixty four results, that's a six
to eleven matchup, by the way, since twenty eighteen twelve
and twelve six versus eleven, So that's I like that
one along the way because everyone likes the five to twelve.
(28:26):
We all like the five twelve, and most people end
up missing the five twelve six eleven is also one
of those ones. To take a peek aap, all right, Gary,
before we wrap things up, Gary Perry, CBS Sports, it's
we know that it's been with since two thousand and eight,
since we had four number one seeds in the final four,
I believe it is. It doesn't happen all that often.
What do you think the final four looks like when
it's all said and done.
Speaker 4 (28:47):
I never pick all four one seeds just because it
is very hard having a job like mine and doing
a bracket.
Speaker 5 (28:54):
Because what I've realized.
Speaker 4 (28:55):
Is if you pick a bunch of upsets, you'll just
be wrong a lot and then people will call you
an idiot. And if you pick a lot of favorites,
people would just say, oh, I guess I could be
an expert. Just pick all the teams that are supposed
to win, so you can't win. I just I get it.
I write names down, I turn it in, and I'm
done with it. But I have Auburn, Saint John's, Duke
(29:15):
and Houston, so three one seeds and a two seed
Saint John's as the Big East Outright Champion, Biggiest Tournament champ.
Speaker 5 (29:22):
Auburn. I don't love the way they've been playing, but
like I.
Speaker 4 (29:24):
Told you, I think they can flip a switch Cooper
flag eventually. I think is going to be okay healthy
enough to help Duke get there and Houston.
Speaker 5 (29:31):
I'm just gonna trust Kelvin Samson.
Speaker 4 (29:33):
Because over the past several years that's been one of the.
Speaker 5 (29:37):
Most reasonable things you could you could do.
Speaker 4 (29:39):
I've got Auburn and Houston in the title game, and
I've got Auburn winning the national championship. For four plus months,
Auburn looked like the best team in the country, accomplished
the most in the country. I know the past two
weeks have been a little different. I'm gonna trust they
can get it back, win six games and cut nets
down in San Antonio on the first Monday night in April.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Absolutely the best again for college basketball fans, even if
you would be considered a casual fan this time of
the year. For the next three weeks, you're filling out brackets,
survivor pools, drafts, all the different things. Maybe that's just
me doing all those different things. Anyway, I know, I
know it's all because there's literally yeah, Jess has got
it as well.
Speaker 3 (30:18):
Jess, you gat your survivor picking yet? Have you done
that yet?
Speaker 7 (30:21):
I'm waiting for tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (30:22):
I'm just a total degenerate. I'm bringing them all into
the web of the fun times of March Madnis.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
But Gary, to waste money.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
It's not waste money, it's an investment. It's an investment.
Go check out the on College Basketball podcast. You can
also get it on YouTube. These guys do a phenomenal job.
You'll feel smarter when it's all said and done. And
don't call them an idiot if if they get something
wrong and your bracket blows up after the first day.
Can't wait to watch your Memphis team. I'm gonna go
there on Friday and watch those guys play. It's gona
be fun to watch them play our tournament games. Are
(30:50):
you a climate Pledgerina? So Gary, We'll watch for you
on TV. We'll listen to the podcast and we will
check in next Thursday after as we head into the

And when you say back to back, not two straight games,
but games where they play two days in a row.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
Correct correct? Oh and ten? Uh. They're closing in on history.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
I believe they have one more back to back after
this and they can tie the all time record of
over twelve. It is a record for fertility, which is
a bummer. Listen, they're playing good hockey right now.
Speaker 7 (32:10):
They are.
Speaker 2 (32:10):
They're playing really good hockey right now. I had to
go on the Vancouver British Columbia Canada A morning show
on Monday and had to defend the Kraken to these
idiots up there with the Vancouver Canucks.
Speaker 9 (32:22):
World.
Speaker 7 (32:22):
Are they going to miss the playoffs?
Speaker 3 (32:23):
Probably one last night? Beat Winnipeg last night, dude, you'd
be win pick.

No.

Speaker 3 (32:38):
Okay, you could say you could pass this law to Mikey.
Speaker 7 (32:40):
I still will. How about that baby's definitely listening?
Speaker 3 (32:43):
Who We both said that at the same time, the
Seattle Kraken played. Hang on, let me get this number.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
They played fifty seven straight games with a key guy
at least one and for the most part it was
two players on injured reserve Jordan Eberley, Yanni Gord and
Vince Due. Fifty seven straight games. Oh, you kind of
(33:11):
look at that, and that actually Joey Eccord wasn't an
injured reserve, but he was hurt for a while. The
nest a couple of weeks, remember, and Phil Gribber couldn't
get a win to save his life.
Speaker 3 (33:18):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
So, and then the fact they're owen ten in back
to backs. There's a lot of little things you can
point to and say, wow, if you would have win
won three games during that three other games are in
that fifty seven game stretch.
Speaker 7 (33:31):
An San Jose and righthim San Jose.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
Win three of your back to back games, right, or
get points in four of those back to back games,
you're right there on the cusp of the playoffs. So
when you say, like, how far away are they They're
not that far away. They don't have an aircraft career.
We talked about this in our post game show last
night on the KCH and Crack and Rocking Network. They
don't have an aircraft carrier. Jacksonrensick term, but they don't.
(33:59):
And to expect you he knew him to be that
next year is a little bit much. No, But they
do have depth scoring they they probably will end up
when it's all said and done with Schwartz, McCann Vaneers
and right along with all all Ellie Tolvinan. They'll have
five guys with twenty plus goals. Yeah, coming late in
(34:22):
a flurry, but they've been okay, like they're they're they're
gonna be okay. It's a we'll check back on the
future of the Crack and what next season looks like
sometime around July third, because once they get to the draft,
in trades and free agency, I think they're gonna I
think they're gonna make the moves to get there. But
tonight's a nice little test back to back game. Ben
will have a game for our pregame forty six.
Speaker 7 (34:41):
Can I say one thing Brandon Montour has been.
Speaker 2 (34:43):
Awesome third Star of the Week in the NHL, which
is like a Player of the week, by the way. Yep,

be named player of the.

of course, we did our bracketology show in the first
hour of the show. Our friend Gary Parrish from CBS
Sports cbsports dot Com is here. But we'll take a
(38:11):
step away from the madness of his march. Don't forget
all the games right here on n I three point three KJFM.
We'll take a step away from that and get to
some football. Because Greg, this is like the third week
in a row that we've had you on pre draft,
and we'll get to some draft.
Speaker 3 (38:24):
We'll talk about some wide.
Speaker 2 (38:25):
Receivers, but it's the third week in a row that
we end up talking about an acquisition by the Seahawks,
who have been quite busy in this offseason.
Speaker 3 (38:32):
First of all, my friend, how are you Ian.
Speaker 10 (38:35):
I'm doing great. I'm sure you're getting ready for the madness.
You know it's upon us.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
It is very much upon us. We carry the games.
That means we get Thursday and Friday off our show
does and so Anders and Jess and I are thrilled.
We are loving that we get to watch some basketball.
We're at the casino, so you know what that means.
But we've got to talk some football and before we
get to the draft wide receivers, of which you've seen
a whole bunch of these guys as we'll talk about
what kind of fits for Quint Koobiak and the Seahawks
(39:03):
and what their needs are. Oh, Greg, they just went
out last Friday. I guess it would have been six
thirty year time is when this came down. This is
a Friday news dump for the second week in a row,
two weeks agoes Geno. This week we find out that hey, hey,
Cup's coming to Seattle. How about that? We got we
got it, We've got a new Seahawks wide receiver.
Speaker 10 (39:24):
Well, it was clearly a position of need. And that's
why we'll talk about wide receivers as well, because I imagine
they still want to add to the group.
Speaker 5 (39:33):
You know.
Speaker 10 (39:34):
Uh, Copp is a guy that I struggled with only
because he hasn't played a lot the last three years.
You know, obviously he says he's healthy, and when he's healthy,
he's terrific. But what I what I found fascinating, Ian
is the number of people, smart people who immediately said,
you know, what are they doing. He's a slot receiver.
They have it, they have a slot receiver. Well, my
(39:54):
guess is just just a guess. My guess is the
Seahawks knew that. Amazingly enough, they probably knew that. And
you know, it's obviously they have a plan that goes
beyond just the fact of static lining up with two
outside receivers and a slot receiver. And the league has
(40:15):
moved away from that anyway, with so much motion, so
much formation variation, so much in terms of produced splits.
So now your technical outside receiver can still almost be
just three or four yards from the offensive tackle. So,
you know, because I heard so many people say, oh,
I don't understand what they're doing. You don't think they
(40:36):
knew that. I mean, this is not a big surprise.
Speaker 3 (40:40):
I listen, I need to scold you.
Speaker 5 (40:42):
Greg.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
You did something here in sports radio land that no
one's allowed to do. I think you just brought common
sense to this conversation. And I for one, I for one,
don't like common sense on this in this format of
sports radio.
Speaker 3 (40:53):
What are you doing to me, sir?
Speaker 10 (40:55):
You know, look, you know I always tell people I'm
not smarter than anybody else. I'm just a guy that
works really hard and I think about this stuff all
the time. I'm a little you know, I'm a little
bit of a lunatic when it comes to that. You
see the world in which I live, So when I see,
you know, a signing like that, you have to go
beyond the obvious, you know, you just you just can't
think of it like that. You know, they knew all this.
(41:17):
This is not as you know, this is not a
surprise to the Seahawks that you know what. Cooper Cup
played a lot in the slot when he was with
the Rams. You know, it's not a big surprise to them.
So obviously, in the context of the new offense with Kubiak,
they have plans, as I said, and much of it
probably concerns formation variation, reduced splits, motions, bunches, stacks, all
(41:40):
kinds of things that allow them to play Cooper Cup
and Smith to Jigba at the same time without falling
into the conventional wisdom of oh, we have two slot receivers.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
Yeah, I mean, and they've got Marcus Feldees Scantling, and
they got a little thing called the NFL Draft coming
up as well, which we'll get to in a second. Yeah,
let's talk about Cooper cup just and I to make
an assumption here, and you know, again crazy for me
to do this, but I'm make an assumption that the
Seahawks signed him to a you know, there's there's a
couple couple of shekels, a couple pennies involved in that
in that contract guaranteed or not, it doesn't matter. We
(42:12):
know how the Seahawks operate with signing free agents. We
saw this with Will Fryes. They're not going to bring
a guy in and give him money without him going
through a physical and finding out where he is health west. Now,
that doesn't mean he can't get hurt during the season,
training camp, whatever it might be. Doesn't mean that won't happen.
But I'm going to use the assumption that the Seahawks,
like you did, use an assumption, know that he's a
(42:34):
slot guy and they have JSN. I'll make an assumption
that they also went through that whole process as well.
In fact, Greg, I can't tell you. I can tell you.
I know they did, because we just had DeMarcus Lawrence
on our show last Wednesday, I think it was Thursday
or Wednesday, Jess and we had, Yeah, he sat in
with us and he was talking about how he was
going through an MRI and the machine died.
Speaker 3 (42:54):
They had a power outage and he was stuck in
the MRI machine.
Speaker 2 (42:56):
How how freaked out he was so and he said
it was the most extensive physical he'd had in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (43:02):
They do that, so let's assume he's healthy, went healthy.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
What is it about Cooper Cup that has made him
just such this elite wide receiver over the years.
Speaker 10 (43:11):
Oh, he is just a master of the position in
terms of understanding the subtlety, the details, the nuances of
route running, and understanding leverage of defenders, Understanding how to
attack and break down that leverage of defenders through his
vertical stem. Just understanding how to give indicators to the
quarterbacks so the quarterback knows when to release the football,
(43:33):
just every detail of route running. I mean, there was
a period there. Obviously he won the Triple Crown. I
can't remember what year that was, was that twenty one
I can't remember the years.
Speaker 3 (43:41):
It was two or three, year twenty.
Speaker 10 (43:43):
One he won triple Crown and he, you know, for
someone like myself who just loves watching tape and you know,
it was taught a lot about football by really smart,
smart coaches over the years. I just have such an
appreciation for the guys that played the game that way
because obviously I was at the combine in the Dome
when he ran a four to six two, and I
(44:03):
remember everybody in the dome kind of sighing and saying, oh,
Eastern Washington, Now he's a six round pick. They'll never
make it, you know. And that's the way that stuff works.
But you know, speed is a very relative thing when
it comes to receivers. There's different kinds of speed. And
he has tremendous quickness and burst, which is different than
(44:23):
speeds as a route runner. And he has tremendous separation
quickness that's different than straight line speed. They're totally different traits.
You know, you can run four six two and not
have long vertical speed and yet have tremendous separation quickness
at the top of your route stand and understanding how
(44:44):
just with a head faint or a stick with your
outside leg just to create that separation. That's what he's
a master at.
Speaker 2 (44:51):
It's a great explanation because I think people look at
it like, yeah, he I mean, you know, look at
this guy Eastern Washington, white guy that runs a four
to six. He can't And then since day one in
the NFL, great, Since day one in the NFL, that
guy is always open. And Seahawks fans know that all
too well because they seen him twice a year since
he came into the league, and no one could cover him.
Speaker 10 (45:12):
I will say this, you know, he went to a
team and the Seahawks obviously know this. It gets back
to the initial point, which, yes I was being sarcastic,
but I was being truthful as well. It gets back
to the point that he went to a team with
McVeigh that really understands how to deploy receivers in terms
of splits, formations, motions that allow them to get free access,
(45:32):
that allow them to have a better opportunity to get
open using their skill set. And I guarantee that the
Seahawks will do that. I mean, Cooper copp is not
the kind of receiver ian He's not in Metcalf where
you line them up as your boundary acts and you
say you just go win one all one. That's not
who he is. And it's funny because neither is Pooka
Nakua and Pokin Nakua has been a dominant, dominant receiver
(45:56):
the last two years in this league with the Rams,
and rarely do they line him up at boundaryacts and
say just go win one all one. There's many many
ways in which to deploy receivers and have them be
volume players that played to their skill sets. And that's
what the Rams did with Kopp and there's no question
the Seahawks have something similar in mind, or they would
(46:16):
not have signed him to a three year, forty five
million dollar deal.
Speaker 3 (46:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (46:19):
I mean that's a Klint Kubiak think great cosiale brought
to by Seattle sider joining us. Clint Kubiak obviously knows
what he wants and he became available because you know
a lot of people just connected the dots saying, hey,
the kids, you know, he's coming home, so to speak,
his home state. He grew up about two and a
half hours from Seattle, went to school four hours from Seattle.
You know, his dad played in Tacoma, was a legend
at Pacific Luthor University, won a national championship there. His
(46:41):
debtors uncle always forget if it's Craig, but anyway, then
played for the Cowboys. It's yeah, it's it's it's a
nice story. But there's a lot of nice stories in
the NFL. You don't sign guys just because they're a
nice story. It's still, as you and I talk all
the times, it's a business, and I know Clint Kubiak
knows how he wants to use them.
Speaker 10 (46:57):
And look and look what Mike McDonald's done this off season,
and I mean he's been The Seahawks have been very aggressive,
and Mike McDonald clearly has a sense, you know, along
with the organization, the decision makers of what they want
this team to look like and how they want to play.
I mean, I remember we talked last week and I
think it was three hours later after we talked they
signed to Marcus Lawrence. So we couldn't talk about that
(47:18):
when we spoke last week. But but I mean, they are,
they are definitely they've got a plan. I mean, and
and look, everybody has a plan. We know that, but
you know, I think it's pretty defined as to how
they're going about it and we'll see how it all
plays out.
Speaker 3 (47:34):
And you brought me right to that work.
Speaker 2 (47:35):
We'll get to wide receivers folks with Greg trust me
on the draft, We'll get to a few of those
guys in a second. Let's see it got fought from you,
because you're right, this all kind of rolls together for
me sometimes and I'm and I'm wondering, did we talk
about DeMarcus Lawrence with crake O Selt.
Speaker 10 (47:48):
We did not.
Speaker 3 (47:49):
The answer is no, but the.
Speaker 10 (47:50):
Members specifically seeing that he signed. I think the afternoon
after we spoke and we and you know, I said,
oh wow, they just signed to Marcus Lawrence. And and
you know, we didn't get a chance to talk about.
Speaker 2 (48:01):
That fire away. What are they getting into Marcus Lawrence again?
If healthy?
Speaker 10 (48:05):
Yeah, I think DeMarcus Lawrence has been a really really
good football player. Now he's older, so you know, you
never know what that means, and I you know, I
don't want to you know, I can't speak to that part.
But you're dealing with a guy that is fundamentally sound.
He's a really strong run defender. You hear coaches talk
all the time about stuff that's not sexy like setting
(48:27):
the edge in the run game. Okay, things along, you know,
things like that which are absolutely critical to play defense,
especially if you're going to line up on the outside
and play some man coverage with your defensive ends have
to be able to set the edge because if they
don't set the edge, there's no one out there. So
you know, as a pass rusher, he's been really good
(48:48):
throughout his career. I don't know if he's still at
that level as a pass rusher.
Speaker 3 (48:52):
He may be.
Speaker 10 (48:53):
I just don't know the answer to that part. But
you're getting a really solid football player who clearly I
think he cut. I don't know if what his other
offers were, but I mean, he looks at this defense
right now. We spoke about this last bit of the
week before, and you look at this defense and there's
a lot of really good football players. I mean, Mike
McDonald's put together a pretty significant defense in terms of talent,
(49:14):
and we know he can code. So I expect this
defense to be one of the better units in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (49:22):
Strong words from our friend Great Cosel, brought to you
by Seattle Sider. All right, let's talk about some wide
receivers available in the draft. I'm assuming they I know
it's always best player and all that kind of stuff,
but I gotta think they still might be looking for
a boundary X guy along the way. Is there a
guy that just jumps out at you that it kind
of fits what maybe Seattle would be looking for.
Speaker 10 (49:45):
You know, it's really interesting to say that, because there's
a there's a bunch of guys who I think can
do it but may not be like obvious as oh,
he's a boundary X one hundred percent of the time.
The guy I keep going back and forth with and
the comparison that's often made to him, I think he's
better than that comparison. But the guy that really intrigued
(50:06):
me was McMillan, T mac from Arizona, big Kid. The
comparison that's always made, and this receiver turned out not
necessarily a boundary X in the NFL is Drake London,
who I'm sure you're very familiar with from USC because
he's in that conference. I think McMillan is well, he's
(50:27):
got similar size. I think he's a better mover, and
I was I didn't know much about McMillan because obviously
I don't see a lot of games with Arizona, and
if memory serves me correctly, they had a pretty poor
season this season, so you know, I didn't and obviously
if they happened to be on it, it's ten thirty
Eastern time, you know, I'm not seeing that. So so
(50:48):
I didn't see much.
Speaker 3 (50:49):
Of him at all.
Speaker 10 (50:50):
But I really like this kid, and I'm really curious
to see how teams see him. He's very smooth, he's
very fluid. He's certainly not so an explosive, but you
don't have to be sudden and explosive to be a
boundary X. What you have to be able to do
ian at boundary acts because you get a lot of
man coverage, you get one on one situations because very
(51:11):
often you're the single receiver on the back side of
trips three receivers to the white side of the field,
so you tend to get a lot of single coverage.
Is you just have to be able to win, and
you can win many, many ways. The foundation of his
game is his hands. He's got a really wide catching radius.
I mean, he just snatches balls away from his frame.
(51:32):
And I thought one of the things that really stood
out to me on tape was how seamless. He was
transitioning from receiver to run after catch, and I thought
he had deceptive quickness, not a burner. You know, he's
not going to necessarily run away from everybody, but you know,
you don't have to do that. So I really liked him,
maybe more than others. You know, I don't necessarily make
(51:53):
lists and rank receivers just because guys are different, you know,
like it's very hard for me to compare him and
Luther burn I think they're different. But but I really
like t Mac. I think he's a really intriguing prospect.
Speaker 2 (52:06):
Greg Cozell joining us courtesy again a Seattle sider. We're
talking to wide receivers. All right, Let's let's go through
about four more guys that might be a nice fit
for Seattle and just guys that I know Greg has
watch watch film on and likes. Let's talk first about
from Texas. Matthew Golden.
Speaker 10 (52:21):
Yeah, Matthew Golden was a receiver that I didn't know
much about it all because he was a transfer, and
you know, obviously Texas then played in a lot of games.
So later in the season I start to see him,
and when I put on his tape, I really like
this kid. I mean, this kid has had a strong
feel for the patent tempo of routes. He understood how
to change speeds. I think he's a vertical dimension. He
(52:44):
ran a four to two nine at the combine. Now
he doesn't necessarily play at four to nine, not many
people do, but that tells you that he does have speed,
you know, I think, uh, you know, he's five eleven
one ninety one. That's normally not seen as a true
boundary X. So I don't know if he'll be seen
that way in the league, but there's no question he's
a three level dimension short, intermediate, vertical, and I think
(53:06):
he's an ascending prospect. Last year, the player I thought
who was ascending when I watched his college date was
Brian Thomas of LSU, and it turned out to be
the case. I think Matthew Golden, even though there are
different receivers, I think Matthew Golden is just scratching the surface,
and I think he'll be ascending once he gets to
the league.
Speaker 2 (53:23):
In the past, Greg, we've always if a guy played
out in the West Coast, we watched him play a
ton because of the old Pac twelve that went away.
So I didn't watch Stanford play maybe at all this season,
but they've got a kid. I think he's a Canadian
kid from elik Ao manor Ao Monor manor whatever.
Speaker 3 (53:39):
His name is.
Speaker 2 (53:39):
He's a big he's six to two. What do you
think of him?
Speaker 10 (53:44):
Yeah, he's a big kid and he ran really well.
He ran a four to four forty at the combine.
He's got great size, he's got a physical presence to him.
At times, he showed really strong hands to snatch the
ball away from his frame. He can catch it through
contact on on in breaking routes, which are critical in
this league. You've got to be able to work between
the numbers, so he can do that. He's not really fluid.
(54:08):
He's a little more tight hipped and linear in his
overall movement. He's not a loose, flexible guy. You know.
I think there's vertical ability here. I think his game
has built more on his size and his powerful physical
presence more than higher level athletic and movement trade. So
he's a guy. I'm curious to see how teams see him.
(54:31):
I'm not quite sure he's a true boundary X, but
he's a big kid and he can run a little bit.
Speaker 2 (54:36):
Another kid who's a big kid, sixty four from Iowa State,
Jaden Higgins.
Speaker 10 (54:41):
Yeah, this kid. I watched him last summer with his
twenty twenty three targets. I watched him this year six'
four and an eighth ran a four four. SEVEN i
think this guy can play BOUNDARY. X i think you
wouldn't say he's a high level. Athlete you wouldn't call him.
Explosive but he's an, effort effortless. Mover he's more of
(55:02):
a little spit of a speed cut receiver as opposed
to sink your hips that kind of. Thing so you
think in terms of the horizontal movement routes like, slants,
glances crossers over, ROUTES i think he's got kind of
a subtle and nuanced physicality to create. SEPARATION i just
think he knows how to run. Routes he's another guy
THAT i think has a great feel for pacing tempo
(55:23):
and he catches. Everything and keep in, mind six four
and an eighth is a. Trait so this was a
KID i really really. Like i'm so curious to see
where he gets.
Speaker 2 (55:33):
Drafted, yeah and even if they're not the MOST i,
mean we're so used to a Dk metcalf explosive.
Speaker 3 (55:38):
Guy you've talked about. It we've talked About Cooper.
Speaker 2 (55:41):
Cup, right you don't have to be the most explosive
guy to get off the you, know to get off
of coverage and things like.
Speaker 10 (55:45):
That think of a guy you know that maybe people
in your area you don't immediately think of because he's
in a different part of the. Country but for about three,
Years Mike thomas with The saint remember, him, yes you,
know and he put up all those numbers and he
was a BOUNDARY x and he was not, fast but
he was, big he was, physical he knew how to run. Routs,
unfortunately injuries derailed his, career but for about three years
(56:09):
he was a, dominant dominant receiver and he played BOUNDARY.
X so you don't necessarily have to be a four
to three guy to be BOUNDARY. X you've just got
to be able to win one on, one AS i,
said because you're going to get a lot of man
coverage when you're the single receiver to the short side
of the, field and there's multiple ways to.
Speaker 2 (56:27):
Win all, right final, receiver we're gonna to because we
can't go through every receiver in the. World but the final,
GUY i would be remiss Go Koog's jess for me
And jess, specifically, yes IF i didn't ask you about
our Guy Kyle williams from from The harvard of The
Northwest Washington State.
Speaker 3 (56:44):
University Kyle. Williams you, know he.
Speaker 10 (56:51):
Was an interesting guy because he's not big and he
ran really well at the. COMBINE i think he ran
a four to. Four so the question is BECAUSE i
went back and forth on him as to whether he's
a true vertical dimension at the next, level whether he's
a little more of a guy who maybe once in
a while gets, vertical but is a little more get
the ball in his hands and you, know and see
(57:13):
what he can do in, space you, know sort of
like a name that came to mind WHEN i was
Watching Kyle, williams and this guy might be a little
straight line, faster but Just i'm thinking in terms of.
Deployment that's the WAY i think about this, stuff deployment
within the. LEAGUE a guy THAT i thought it was
someone like A Marvin mims With. Denver you know that
you can use in a lot of different. Ways get
(57:33):
the ball in his, hands there's a lot of juice to.
Him mims LIKE i, said might be just a little faster,
vertically But williams is a guy that may be that
kind of. Player BUT i think the four to four
really helped him because my guess is most people like
myself probably watching his, tape were uncertain as to whether
he's a true vertical dimension because he's a smaller.
Speaker 3 (57:54):
RECEIVER i love.
Speaker 2 (57:56):
It i'll just say, This i'd add, this and it
does not MAYBE i don't know if it shows up
on taper, not but the character in the compete with this,
kid he you, know everyone's tapping out of bowl games these.
Days they were playing in A Holiday.
Speaker 3 (58:06):
Bowl the.
Speaker 2 (58:06):
Coach the coach was, gone the quarterback was, gone a
bunch of guys were, gone and that young man, said screw,
It i'm gonna play in the bowl. Game i'm gonna
stay with my. Guys and he put up A Holiday
bowl record in that bowl game and show showed. Out
but he didn't have to be, there like he was
going to The Senior bowl. Already he didn't have to do.
It AND i think that speaks something as. WELL i
don't know IF nfl teams care about that kind of,
(58:28):
stuff BUT i think it showed.
Speaker 10 (58:29):
Something, YEAH i agree with. YOU i agree with, you
and then and you, KNOW i think that does mean,
Something and especially for guys Like Kyle williams is obviously
not a top ten, pick you, know BUT i think
that does mean. Something and So i'm. Curious you, know
the four to, four LIKE i, said AND i know
that that sometimes doesn't absolutely. Translate just LIKE i mentioned
With Matthew golden ran a four two, nine which certainly helps,
(58:50):
him but he doesn't necessarily play at four to. Nine
but teams do take a look at. That if a
guy runs a four to, four you know what he's
fast and and and now you have to figure out
how to kind of get that into his game with
how you deploy him in the context of your.
Speaker 2 (59:03):
Offense Great, cosell we we covered with See Cooper, Cup
DeMarcus lawrence wide receivers in the. Draft It's march, madness
And i'm glad we got you in today despite the
madness of the march that is coming up on our
station and throughout the next few.

Speaker 10 (59:19):

cup has played in the. Slot in case you didn't know,
that no.
Speaker 3 (59:24):
One's no one has told us that, Yet and can
you confirm? That have you heard that? Yet number?
Speaker 7 (59:29):
Check, yes he is a quote unquote slot.
Speaker 10 (59:32):
Receiver, okay just confirming And Jackson smith And jig also
plays in the. Slot so they're just gonna put these
guys on top of one. Another that's their.
Speaker 3 (59:40):
PLAN i better Call Hugh millan and alert him to
that as. Well, yeah, YEAH i.
Speaker 10 (59:46):
Think they should be because The seahawks obviously.
Speaker 3 (59:51):

speaking Of, hugh we might have to do a huge
great Coach selle pre draft.
Speaker 3 (59:57):
Conversation that might be a conversation we.
Speaker 10 (01:00:01):

we like Fun when we did the last, one.

Speaker 7 (01:03:20):
Right and? Me, yes what's my?
Speaker 3 (01:03:24):
Question did you have a question on t on the text, Line.
Speaker 7 (01:03:26):
Oh, yes that's. SORRY i didn't know if we're getting
a text.
Speaker 5 (01:03:29):
YET i don't.
Speaker 4 (01:03:29):
Know.
Speaker 8 (01:03:29):
Okay so there's a couple of texts asking, like what's
this ken palm that everyone keeps referring? To So, IAN
i think you should do a good a better job explaining,
it AND i would.
Speaker 2 (01:03:38):
The easiest way to look at it is it's it
breaks down games possession by possession based on, offense and
then defense's performances by one hundred.
Speaker 3 (01:03:48):
Possessions it's predictive. Metric, okay got. It it's the easiest
way to look at.
Speaker 7 (01:03:52):
It if you want predictive, metric what is?
Speaker 2 (01:03:55):
That that means you're predicting what somebody's gonna, do how
you gonna, score how they've done up until, now, yes
and how they're going to, score how they're not going to,
score how they're gonna, stop but they're not going to.
STOP i will say if you, are if you're into this,
stuff the, analytics the metrics are. Fun there's someone you
can follow ON i don't know she's On, twitter ex.
Speaker 3 (01:04:13):
But she's On.
Speaker 2 (01:04:13):
Instagram she does a great. Job but just go to
cbsports dot. Com McKenzie, Brooks Kenzie. Betts she does stuff
With perish and all those.
Speaker 3 (01:04:20):
Guys she's.
Speaker 2 (01:04:20):
Phenomenal she's, like she's. Phenomenal and her predictive, metrics she's
got a lot of. Upsets she went on THE Cbs
Sports network On sunday with these. Guys there you, go
AND i was, like, damn she's got. It i'm, like
write an. Example, OKAY i don't, know but the predictive metrics,
urgency because it's one of the things you can look
(01:04:41):
at when you're trying to decide whether the team should
be in the. Tournament And i'll give you an example. There,
AGAIN i don't care what they did last. Night North
carolina should not have been in a, tournament. Period and
the story there's, nothing there's no there's no metric that
tells you that they should have been in the, tournament not,
one but they. Were and Like gary, SAID i Thought
gary did a great job explained to us and during
our bracketology segment at the one o'clock, hour it doesn't
(01:05:03):
matter what you do once you're. In that doesn't change
doesn't change the fact he didn't belong in, there, Right
like that doesn't change the fact at. All Like alabama
didn't belong in The College Football playoff. Champion they didn't
earn their way in this. YEAR i bet they would
have won a, game maybe, two, Right that just that's what.
Happens but, anyway that's that's the way to look at.
(01:05:23):
It you can overthink. It you can listen To parish
if you missed it, earlier we'll have a podcast up.
There if it's not up, ALREADY i would listen to
His Ion College basketball podcast as. Well they do a
terrific job breaking everything. Down those guys are, fantastic just
like listening To.
Speaker 3 (01:05:37):
Gary, yeah he's really. Good you Get, okay let's do.
This we gotta take a break fans in.
Speaker 2 (01:05:41):
Right, yes we got some special audio to play for
him coming up, next so call Me casino wrapping things
out our bracketology. Show big thanks To Gary parrish for
jumping on today for an extended period of. Time he's massively,
busy like massively busy for hind to clear out basically
(01:06:02):

you missing you listen to it online at ninety three
three kar dot calm So i'll actually the. Apps the
best way to do.
