(00:00):
What's up, guys. He's agirl Alexandria Ikimoni in the studio with the
one and only do How are youdoing today? Girl? Good Alexandria,
how are you? I am well, so excited to have you in the
studio. Thank you. You lookamazing by the way, I was telling
you, I love this purple skirtthat you have on Free People. Yes,
you look beautiful. You look beautiful, You're glowing by the way.
(00:20):
Thanks. I'm gonna say that's thebaby, yes, yes, which is
so exciting. I'm gonna talk toyou more about that a little bit later,
but first, can I tell youI had the best morning. A
beautiful morning is the best way todescribe it. Ask me why why your
new album? I listened to thewhole album twice this morning and it was
the perfect way to get ready today. It was just so peaceful, it
(00:44):
was beautiful, get me in thegreat mood. I like to start off
my morning with something like that, especially gospel, and I was like,
man, this is such a goodone. Now it's my new go to
every single morning when I get ready. So we're gonna dive deep into that
album really quick. But first, for those who do not know you are
sick time Grammy Singer, Songwriter,Musician, which is amazing, by the
(01:04):
way. Congratulations on all your successso far. How does it feel knowing
that your first product that you didput out there had a number one single
called Brighter that reached on number oneon the gospel radio? What was that
like for you coming out the gate, first project, coming out having that
kind of success, and then itreally just continued to snowball. Yeah.
(01:25):
I mean, I'm looking back atthat moment, I didn't realize how big
of a deal it was because you'regrinding so much when you're like building and
just and still trying to remain genuineand true and creative, and so they
had to let me know, like, hey, like this is a big
deal, like this is what you'vebeen working for. And so just kind
(01:47):
of slowly and waves the excitement hitme, and I look back and I
realized how much of a success thatwas, And I'm really thankful for my
team and everybody's worked really hard.Yes, yes, they worked hard.
You worked hard. Now you're allover you know, doing big things,
performing and whatnot. But you're herein the A today, That's right.
I'm in the A okay, DC, we know. How does it go
(02:08):
being in the A right now?Great? You know? Okay? So
Atlanta Atlanteans are like, they're likepeople from Detroit in this way that they're
They're pretty much their own emancipated state. That's true. That's true. They
got their own thing going on.And I love that people say we're from
Atlanta not Georgia. Right. Haveyou been here before? Is it your
(02:31):
first time? Oh? I've beenhere so many times? Yeah? Atlanta,
you know, because Atlanta is likekind of a music cub there,
creative hubs. Yes, I comehere a lot. That's good. Any
favorite spots you have in the city, Oh my goodnod hangout anything, what
do you do? But you knowwhat, when we filmed Brighter, the
music video, I realized just howmuch like nature Atlanta had to offer,
(02:57):
and I was like, I gotto come back here and go like,
not right now in July, okay, we want to wait, yes,
but I was. I was pleasantlysurprised by that. Yeah. Yeah,
a lot of great nature trails outhere. So yes, definitely come back
and explore that. Okay, Sofor those who haven't heard your new album,
(03:20):
how would you describe it? It'sa lot going on, but it's
great, A lot of good thingsgoing on that's not always bad. I
just I think sonically and lyrically,it is a life project and I think
that's what those are the kind ofartists that Jonathan mcgreynolds wants to sign and
when he brought me on, heknew Dough has the capability to make life
(03:45):
music. Yes, and so you'regoing to see and hear and hopefully be
impacted by every facet of my lifeand how God and my relationship with God
informs that. What. Okay, first of all, tell people about the
body of work. What is thename, what is I guess the vibe
you can get from that, andreally the message that you want people to
grab. Yeah. So my albumis entitled Heart of a Human, which
(04:09):
is it's pretty that's so self explanatorywhen you think about what I just said.
But we've got ten songs. Wegot a workship song, yes we
do. We got vibe songs. We got songs that hype you up,
and then we got songs that helpyou in a state of vulnerability and give
you language to articulate your feelings andemotions. Yeah, which I love.
(04:31):
And a lot of the songs werereally too empower for you to overcome challenges
and struggles and know your worth andknow who you are in Christ and God,
which is also beautiful to listen to. Like I said, I listened
to it two times this morning, still learning all the names. But the
one with La Craze was one ofmy favorite. Thank you, the one
(04:53):
like you we just Met? Ithink it was so glad, So glad
we met was a beautiful song.Yeah. And then there's one more I
came name of. I think it'sbrighter that writers on the first press.
Okay, first project, I'm thinkingof one that has that vibe. Yes,
it was guitars and stuff. Yes, I'm about to pull it up,
right. Was it Holy hand? No, Holy was good, but
(05:15):
I'm showing me it was slow.It was slow. It was a beautiful
body of work. I'm about topull it up. Where you were it
was a B word? Yes,Oh my god, that was also beautiful
to listen. Why didn't I thinkof that? Yeah, it's okay,
those are my favorites. But tellme what is your favorite song off of
your last project? So I likethis song? Okay, I have to
(05:35):
name three? Is okay? Oh, yes, give it me, I
love show me, I love It'stime, and I love so glad we
Met. All those songs are aboutinternal healing. So Glad we Met.
I wrote for my friend who expressedto me that they had decided to give
up their plan to commit suicide ata certain point in their life if everything
(05:58):
hadn't worked out the way they thought. But I didn't know they were battling
with depression that deeply, and itso messed me up that I realized the
church needs to do a better jobof talking about mental health, and we
need to stop acting like Jesus wasjust can only relate to us in this
as a champion and as a warrior, but the scripture refers to him as
(06:20):
a son of suffering, and he'snot afraid of our suffering. That he
can walk through things with us,not just get us over it to the
other side, but he can sitand walk through it. That it's okay
to take medication and the commune andfor the community to come and surround you
and help you heal. How doyou even get healing unless you can tell
(06:41):
the Lord I have this ailment? And so anyway, those are my favorite.
Yeah, and you hear the vulnerabilityand just the words in that song.
It makes a lot of sense foryou to put something out there like
that to really help others who couldbe facing similar situations like that. And
like you said, it's powerful. We need to talk more about mental health
(07:01):
and and getting the help and assistancewe need. Yeah, yeah, Oh.
I also want to talk to youmore about the process it takes to
make an album like this, becauseit's beautiful, it's you know, it's
well thought out. Tell me moreabout your creative process and how you really
put this one together. I mean, you guys are probably hearing about a
(07:24):
year's worth of work, maybe alittle bit longer than that. We did
two writing camps with some of myfriends. Then we did then I just
chopped in the studio with some people, and then I just I flew to
New York and wrote with my brothersfor a few days. So that's where
(07:45):
you get fallen for and breathe. It's time. Came from a writing camp,
so it just was like so manydifferent and then in all of that,
I'm experiencing life, you know,I'm dating this guy and then get
married in August, and then andthen we found out we were pregnant,
and and then we had a wedding, was pregnant. I love it.
(08:07):
And then we, you know, are announcing the end and it's just like
and I'm living between two states andso that's a lot to happen within the
first year of your marriage, butjust like within within a year period,
it's just a lot. So you'rehearing all of those, all of those,
all of that went into making thisalbum. Yeah, and you really
hear how beautiful it is. Ireally want everybody to listen to this album
(08:28):
because it's so good. And weknow that you, like you said,
you know, you started dating aguy, you got married, having a
baby. First, let's talk aboutthe marriage. Yeah, how has it
been being on Newlywed? Was itlast August? I believe it was.
Yeah, how has it been since? So fun? I mean, I'm
glad that we had we had fivemonths to ourselves and close friends and the
(08:52):
churches we was going to because wewas getting one hotel room. We had
to let them know it's for me. But I love it so but like
just having that time was like sospecial. And then when we were ready
we announced it and I, youknow, I was thirty five when when
I got married, so I waslike, really really good at being single.
(09:13):
Yeah, so it has been areal adjustment, like thank god I
got a good man. But it'sbeen a true adjustment, a true human
adjustment. And so there's a lotthat I'm like a lot of new layers
and things that I'm learning. Andnow it's like, yep, you're having
a baby too. All the thingsthat I thought I was gonna do at
twenty and then, you know whatI mean, then at twenty five,
I'm gonna get pregnant. He was. God was like, no, you're
(09:35):
gonna do all that in one year, since he wanted it so bad,
you know, hear it a oneyear one thing? Yea. So it's
been beautiful. It's been challenging, yeah, and I'm growing. I know
that I'm growing because adjustments like thatin life, moving to a new place,
(09:56):
they push you to what you thinkis your breaking point. Then you
discover a new level of leniency leaningon the Lord. And I'm really thankful
for that. Yeah it's hard tosay because it'd be hard sometimes, you
know, but like I'm so thankfulfor that, right right, And you're
talking about leaning on the Lord, you know, that's a part of the
(10:16):
marriage, and you know, makingit strong. What do you think are
some other factors or other elements tomake and have a strong foundation in marriage.
I think that you, if you'rea believer, you know you got
to pray together. You guys haveto figure out what that looks like together.
And that's and you know what.Let me be careful because I'm a
(10:39):
newly wet so I can't say anythingto marry people because I don't know nothing.
But my parents have been married forforty six years, and what I
have seen work for them, yeah, is that they always added prayer to
their marriage and to their parenting. And so that's an ingredient that I'm going
to add in. And then anotherthing people have been telling us that have
(11:01):
been married longer is if you cancommit to figuring it out for the rest
of your life with this person, then you're gonna be just fine because it's
just so much change. Yeah, you think you got it down and then
another right, you get a baby, or then you go through midlife crisis.
So they say, so it makessense, Yeah, we're committed to
(11:22):
do it. I can love it. Well, you're committed to your love
because you produce a beautiful baby.So tell me more. First, how
was it when you found out?Did you tell immediately? Like how did
that whole situation go? I'm horriblewith secrets. I definitely was like,
I'm going to keep this to myselfuntil I can film it. Oh,
(11:43):
I will say this. So Idid my first precticey. I had a
miscarriage and that was like a quickthing. But you know, I want
to say that because I don't wantthat to be taboo for people. Yeah,
and uh, and we processed throughthat and then and then I was
on tour with brand In Lake anda couple of weeks in, you know,
(12:03):
my monthly hadn't come. And myhusband was like he knew, this
is what he said forbade him,I know you're pregnant. And it's like,
it's fine, it's fine. Itake it to and I'm pregos.
So I just called him and showedhim the I love it. Yeah,
(12:26):
And then we did the blood testwhere you can find out really early.
So we were like six weeks pregnantand now we were having a boy yep.
And then my husband had had adream that we had a son named
Shiloh, and I was like,I love that name. Yeah, so
we just we settled on that nameeven before we knew what we were having.
We knew it was going to beShiloh because it's just a good for
(12:48):
a girl or yes, and it'sa beautiful name. Any middle names yet,
are still working on Silo Joel Palmerbecause Lando's middle name is Joelle.
Okay, yeah, oh that's beautiful. We can't wait to meet you,
Shiloh Oh. I mean I'll bepeeking on social media, yeah, which
is so exciting. Okay, soyou are doing all this, you're being
you know, a wife and amom, but you just put out this
(13:09):
body of work. Any other thingsyou're gonna be working on this year,
are just gonna kind of focus ongetting ready for your new addition. I
mean I have to focus on that. Yeah, I got doc disappointment,
No, okay, yeah, butI think I think too. One of
the things somebody challenged me to dois to be open to how like being
a mother is going to impact yourwriting and leaning into that. Maybe you
(13:35):
know, one of the things Ihaven't been able to express to the world
is my worship side. So maybesomething like that. I don't know,
I just I feel a new levelof creative juices. It could be because
I'm in my second trimester and I'mnot sick anymore, so, but yeah,
I'm excited. But we're we're focusingon this project right now for sure,
(13:56):
and it's a beautiful project that leadsit's time for sure. And I've
noticed about you. You're really bigon family. Yeah, even had a
few albums with your own family.Talk to me more about like back in
the day working with your family producingthese, you know, popular albums that
I'm not mistaken we're Grammy nominated aswell. So how was it like working
(14:16):
with your family in music, justbeing able to blend it all together.
Yeah, gosh, we were sonew and green behind the ears. And
I will say that we are luckyto still be so in love with each
other after having done all of that, because I think business can be a
(14:37):
dynamic that could be difficult for youknow, a family and relationships, but
like, we love playing together. My brothers are still like writers and producers
on my project. Both of mybrothers breathe, you know, my other
brother they're just there for me andso that that will just never go away.
(14:58):
But like, yeah, I missmy family. I miss playing with
my family. I do not misstraveling with my family. Why it's a
lot. It's just a lot.Now I only have to worry about myself,
you know. But like I missbeing in hotels. But that that
whole like airport thing that happens withtwelve people is stressful, right, But
(15:22):
yeah, I miss playing with them. Would you ever do anything with them,
like in the future just that?Okay? Yes, what does it
look like? If you could?I probably would feature Forever Jones on a
project hopefully. I mean, they'rethey're weird. We have conversations all the
time about putting music out and whatthat would look like. Yeah, but
everybody's so spread out, so it'skind of hard. I get it.
(15:43):
I get it. And you're talkingabout features. Let's go back to this
album really fast. You have somegreat features on the album. Tell me
more about what it was like towork with some of these artists like Lacrae
and so forth. I mean, how did that go? La Craye was
a voice thing and I sent tohis DM like, hey, Broke,
I love it. Yeah. Crayhas always been so kind to me.
(16:07):
I'm glad that it's him rapping becauseI feel like in his journey and to
be honest and to help people. He's just he's caught so much flak from
in the comments section on social media, so I feel like this song is
like what he has to say.And then I think working with Joel Barnes.
Joel's my brother, and he isjust, to me, one of
(16:32):
the most amazing, prolific writers ofour generation. You'll see his name on
a lot of different projects, andI'm very proud of him, and I
was so glad I got to workwith him. Yeah, and also I
mean he shares his story with mentalhealth. He lost a family member too
a mental health battle, and sohe just has a depth and an understanding.
(16:52):
Even with the song It's time.Yeah, that's beautiful and their features
were amazing. So would you liketo work with in the future if you
could pick any other person or people? Well, the other interview, I
said yeah in another and when Isaid yeahba and they were like, well
Leyla Hathaway, and then I waslike, yeah, you know, but
(17:15):
yeah, I'm gonna say yeah.But again, she's a vocal a vocalist
that I would just love to Idon't know, I would love to write
something for and see how we canblend and layer. I would love that.
I can't wait to see more collaborationsfrom you with these artists praying on
the work that's to come. SoI do want to get your opinions on
something as a Christian and a gospelWe love it as a Christian myself.
(17:37):
What are your thoughts on, youknow, secular music as far as like
our generation goes. Do you feellike you know it's okay to listen to
it or do you feel like peopleshould be blocking out the noise and focus
on obviously gospel and christ What areyour thoughts. I'm gonna make it this
easy. I think your convictions withTV shows and movies and things like that
(18:02):
should match your convictions with music.I don't know why we separate that,
and we're not good at it,But like I remember catching flak for saying
the word hell and when I pray, and I even had like scriptural have
scriptural reference for why it was importantto say it in that song and how
different translations of scriptures use specific wordsthat might be offensive to us. But
(18:26):
they were getting their point across withthe gospel, right. But the people
who were mad at me about thatword probably went to see the Avengers,
and they all those words are youknow what I mean, They probably watched
those movies over and over and overagain and never gotten upset. And here
I am preaching the gospel right, and so I just think you need to
(18:51):
make sure that those convictions line upacross the board. Use the scripture in
the Word of God, but inthose gray areas, work with the Holy
Spirit and ask him. Like youknow, if you feel convicted about something
that's not clear in scripture, thenyou make that your boundary. But do
not put that on everybody else. Those are fair words, completely fair.
(19:11):
And I like what you said acrossthe board because we do more so have
the conversation as far as music isconcerned. But with movies, I don't
know what the problem is a problemand leave her alone. Hows a real
place? Thank you? Come on, come on, guys. But you
are an artist as well. Imean a gospel artist, yes, but
an artist. The music industry is, it's so rough industry. I'm gonna
(19:36):
be politically work because I'm on iHeartRadiohere, but let's just talk about the
fact of the way the music industryis in general. You take up as
you as far as gospel music takesthem a smaller portion of everything that we
hear from R and B to countryto rock and so forth. What are
your thoughts on how the music industryis going and the things that are being
put out today or in a today'stime if you will, y, Yeah,
(20:00):
I mean, I just want tomake sure that at the end of
the day, my lyrics point peopleto Jesus, and that if they grab
a hold of the rope, likeif my lyrics were a rope, that
the more that they draw in thatthey see Jesus and they're like, oh,
I thought she was just talking aboutlife, But there's something deeper here.
(20:22):
And all I can do is speakto like what my little part plays.
And I don't also like to bejust pigeonholed to being a gospel artist
because artistry is my job, right, it's my career. The gospel industry
is not a Christian industry. It'sjust that's how they that's the genre of
(20:44):
music that we're singing, right. But I want to be a Christian who
goes to work every day just likea doctor or a basketball player and let
my relationship with God inform my work. Right that way, I don't have
to come under the expectations that peoplecreate for a gospel artist, right,
I'm living and plant and the expectationsthat the scripture sets for me because I'm
(21:07):
I'm a Christian who goes to workevery day and that's the That's all that
I can speak to, is whatis my part in this industry? Because
yes, there are a lot ofcrazy messages out there, but people are
just trying to understand and find answers, man and and I can't be the
voice out there that's arguing with them, making people feel bad all the time.
(21:29):
Yeah, I want to be presentingthe answer and the way you present
it with your music really, Imean doesn't have limits as far as who
can listen to it and who canreally enjoy the music and understand the message.
So I think that's great that you'redoing it your way and not wanting
wanting to be put in a certaingenre or a certain box because you can
reach so many which is fantastic.Okay, Well, I do want to
(21:52):
know what is next after next, after the summer passes and the holidays are
coming up. Are we just relaxing, like I said, focusing on baby
or you know, I have tostop at some point, like I will
have to just so, I'm probablygonna give myself about three three and a
half months so I have time beforeand after makes sense. I don't know
(22:15):
what I'm gonna be doing there.I know that i'm gonna tell myself that
I'm gonna sit still. Then I'mgonna get stir crazy and maybe I'll just
be filming covers or something. ButI'm a creative. I will be riding
my way through that season because that'swhat I do. Makes sense. I
was hoping you're gonna touch on theStellar Awards and like performances. I was
(22:36):
like trying to like push it outof you guys. Yes, ma'am so
excited. A few events there,I couldn't name them off the top of
my head. But yeah, butI'm not gonna be at the Stellar Awards,
but I'm gonna be in the mix, in the mix performing at some
of the events. What's the preplike for that one? The prep is?
I mean, it's just like makingsure the right people are there musically
(23:00):
to support you on whatever stages. And then clothes. I love it.
Clothes, girl, Yeah, whatare we what are we vibing for?
What's what's the vision like clothes wise. Yeah, I mean now that I'm
pregnant, right, I just feellike comfort comes first, But this is
comfortable. It looks very cute.So I'm saying you can still comfort can
(23:21):
come first and you still feel like, you know, cute and pretty.
So I'm doing like some jumpers andflowery float you know, frilly stuff that
flows. I don't want none touchingmy body all the time. I get
it, especially now it's hot too, Like you know, we're not doing
that in Vegas, No, butwe are super excited about that. We'll
be watching and tuning in and followingup with you. So for those who
(23:42):
do want to follow and keep up, how they can? How can they
find you on social media? Yes, you guys can find me at Doe
Jones Music on Instagram and just typein Doe Jones into YouTube and Facebook and
I should pop right up. Ireally love interacting actually mostly with my fans
are followers on Instagram, so hitme up. I love it. We
(24:03):
all love Instagram. It's our generation. Anyways. Taktalk's fun, but nothing
competes to Instagram. Nothing to me, to me, to me once again,
It's Alexandria Kamoni in the studio withDo Thank you so much for coming
in. Yes, and definitely goshoom the album. Guys, it is
so good one more time. Letpeople know where they can get the album
from and the name of the album, all the good stuff. It's called
(24:23):
Heart of a Human And you cancheck all the DSPs, all the digital
streaming platforms YouTube, Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Google Play, all of
them. Baby, we love tosee it well. Thank you so much
