Skip Barber talks about some of the cars in his collection including a rare Pre War BMW 327 and a huge 1957 Cadillac Convertible that barely fits in his garage. He talks about moving to Connecticut in 1955 to be near Lime Rock Park. He grew up in Philadelphia, PA and recently saw his old neighborhood on TV for the first time when they showed the recent plane crash. But when he lived in the area it was country and not part of the city. Skip talks about how het got into racing and the history of Lime Rock Park and how he used to borrow money from banks to buy race cars and had to explain why the car didn't have insurance.
He talks about racing Vipers, Neons and Miatas and the advantages of each. Discussion turns to starting the Skip Barber Racing School in 1975 when he was finished racing and having no idea if it would work, yet 400,000 people have been students of the school. He said one third of Daytona drivers practiced and learned at his school. He talks about famous drivers like Johnny Rutherford and Jeff Gordon. Jeff Gordon originally wanted to be a road course driver when he was learning at the Skip Barber School, but couldn't find a ride and ended up being a NASCAR star.
Skip Barber has been inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame and is joining the Motorsports Hall of Fame in Daytona in March 2025. Skip and Stewart talk about autocross and hill climbs and the Pagoda in Reading, PA.
Lime Rock is having their first NASCAR Series Truck Race in June 2025. Skip tells the story about the Seinfeld Easter egg of the Skip Barber Racing School sticker on his refrigerator in the show Seinfeld, how it got there and how he found out about it. Seinfeld his a huge car guy and in fact owns the Steve McQueen Le Mans Movie Porsche 917 and learned how to drive at the Skip Barber Racing School.
