Ninety three seven to beat h Townsvery hip hop home at the Breakfast Club.
Good Sunday morning. Welcome to Faceto Beat. This is everything popping
in your htown community. Now,don't forget y'all. If you know anybody
that is doing something in the community, surrounding areas with a nonprofit or you
know, have something that they arereally wanting to do in the community,
y'all be sure to hit me up. Um sliding to I d MS at
(00:22):
nine three seven to beat Facebook TikTok, I G. We do check them
all right, and uh yeah,we need you to be apart. So
this morning, First of all,I am so happy to have somebody that
is not a stranger to Face toBeat. We've had him on. The
only thing we missing is a coupleof them stuffed I know it's early,
(00:44):
but man, oh man, Ihave my friend Jared Rector on the line,
owner of Stuffed Wings. Good morning, Good morning everyone. How are
you doing today? Man? Wantsome wings? Oh Jared, I swear
every time, and I know wetalked about this all the time, but
but those that don't know stuffed Wings, actually you know what, let me
(01:07):
let you go ahead and talk tohim about because you're not a stranger to
the show. But before we getinto what you have going on, just
you know, let everybody know howstuffed wings actually started in the city,
right, So stuff wing started witha small concept. I was just thinking
about what I was going to makefor dinner for my wife, and I
was just like, you know what, let me put our two favorite things
(01:29):
together, fried chicken and dirty rice. And then I was like, you
know what, let's take it astep further. Let's see if I can
put that dirty rice inside of achicken wing. So I kind of put
you know, my engineer of minetogether and just like I gotta put the
dirty rice in his chicken wings becausenine and told her she's gonna be expected
for some stuffed chicken wings, man. So you know, I got the
(01:49):
research and I was like, I'mlike, Lloyd Jesus help me. So
I don't know where to put it, found a way to put it in
there, and she's a picky eater, so she loved it like immediately,
so I was just like, okay, cool. She was like, cook
it again for dinner, and Iwas like, all right, I cook
it again. And some friends foundout about it. Then a neighbor found
out about it, and then rightafter that we did our first pop up
(02:12):
and HB and we just took offevery since then, it's just being stuffed
wings after stuffed wings after stuff wings. Man, Now you's a lot of
stuff. Are you originally from Houston? Right? Correct? Yes, ma'am
right, So let me ask youthis, okay, And this is gonna
be a good segue into um,why actually we have you on the show.
(02:36):
Now. I'm a native you Stonianborn and raise Sunnyside, South Park,
south Side, third Ward, allof that, and growing up in
church, like my mom, like, we would always celebrate June Teenthum,
I didn't really know what it was. I just know that we would always
celebrate. We would always get aroundand this is no live We would be
eating watermelon and barbecue chick and justbe sitting outside in the heat like all
(03:02):
day. And I just remember, like my parents and church members, you
know, talking about Juneteenth. Butit wasn't until I got older and really
understood, you know, and especiallynow after COVID the climate has changed,
you know, Um, how wasJune teenth? You know for you growing
up being a native Houstonian. Yeah, I mean, like I literally had
(03:23):
a conversation with a friend that's notfrom Texas and he was just like,
you know, juneteent is a bigholiday for y'all in Texas. I was
like, yeah, I'm like,it's it's for you too, right.
He was like, nah, look, I knew nothing about that. Wow.
And I was like, I guess, so it is, you know,
and we take you know, prideon that holiday, you know,
to um common fellowship with one another, families and friends and churches and just
(03:49):
have a good cook out and listento some music, play some cards,
you know, and just have agood time and just celebrate, you know,
the freedom of our ancestors, rightexactly. And um, I'm just
like man um and and and andand you're so right, Like it seems
like it's just now catching on tothe other states. And I'm like,
(04:12):
what, Yeah, it's very sadum for those that don't know. I
don't want to get it wrong, but you know, we was the last
ones to find out we was freein Galveston. Ain't Ain't that sad Like
we was the last ones to realize, you know, that we was free,
(04:35):
free, free free people. Soum, that's why we celebrate Juneteenth
and we turn up so hard, especially in Texas for those that are not
from Texas. Okay, and soum speaking of so talk to us about
what exactly you have going on?UM next weekend. Yeah, so for
Father's Day weekend also June Teams weekend, we're collaborating with UM Raised Barbecue.
(05:00):
Shock. I've been Yeah. SoI've been knowing mister Ray probably since I
started, since I lost the foodtruck out the Third War Sunnyside. And
he's always been like a supporter ofmentor to me, and I always gave
me great advice, always came into patronize the business, you know too.
And he loved the food. SoI was just like, you know
(05:21):
what, Um, it's kind oflike my b Casey, which has been
a black kitchen concerts. I alwayspay treaty to a musical artist, you
know. I was like, youknow what, I want to do that
with mister Ray. He's been ina community for over thirty years, and
you know that's a long time tobe a community developer, you know,
(05:43):
always giving out jobs to the community, and this is providing great barbecue.
And you know mister Ray, he'syou know, up in age. So
I just want to give him, tribute to him and pay homage to all
the hard work he's done over theyears. Yeah. So I was like,
you know what. I talked toher, who was a um my
(06:04):
friend. Yeah, my boy,so so her. I talked to her
about it, and I was like, man, I want to do.
I want to take my stuff inand I'll stuff it in my wings,
but I want you to smoke it. Oh my god, I it sounds
(06:25):
good. Oh my gosh, Ilit up. I woke up for real.
Whoa, Oh my gosh, thatis brilliant. Okay, keep going.
I want interrupt. Oh my god. We're gonna take our four stuffings
and we're gonna add some of theirstuffings that they are their sides, you
(06:45):
know, like Miss Maxine spicy rice, spicy bood with and I mean,
we're gonna smoke it. And thenwe're gonna have a smoke fry, which
is my favorite option. It's wherewe're gonna take the wings and still batter
it like fried chicken, but you'regonna get fried smoked chicken wings. Oh
my god, you get out ofchurch today, you make sure you go
(07:12):
down. Man. Okay, nowwait a minute, okay, let me
let me rewind, Let me rere rewind. First of all, I
really command y'all for you know, collaborating and working together, you know,
first of all, being black businesses, you know, sometimes it's just kind
of hard to find that camaraderie. So first of all, I command y'all.
(07:33):
Second of all, I love misterRay. I love mister Ray like
the first and and and he hasalways been a strong advocate in the city
of celebrating Juneteenth. Like when theyfirst moved over there, the new location,
you know, right there next toDairy Queen. Um, I used
to DJ the Juneteen celebrations in therestaurant. Just yeah, yeah, like
(07:59):
I love this. Next see likeherbs like those, um they are my
peeps. And my mom love raisedbarbecue. She has dimension now, but
she is not going to forget aboutthat rib sand Like for real, she
is not gonna forget about that ribStalward. So next weekend, y'all are
(08:22):
honoring um, mister Rays for Father'sDay and Juneteenth. It's gonna be um
at your at stuff wings right correct, So we're gonna do it at both
locations, Oh, simultaneous kick itoff. Yeah, we both want to
kick it off on Friday and Saturdayin the courts mister Race's clothes on Sunday,
but we're open, so that daywe're gonna do a wall ceremony where
(08:46):
we're gonna release the wall mirror ofmister Rays Barbecue. So if you come
to our restaurant, you'll see FrancisChicken on there. You see the university
tissue. So we're gonna surprise himwith a wall ceremony or releasing his his
his logo on the wall and alot of music for him, some of
his favorite hits from back in theday. What time is that gonna start?
(09:09):
What time is that gonna start? That's gonna start at two o'clock,
So right after church, church, right after church, oh, two o'clock.
Next weekend, I'm definitely going toreally mark my calendar. And um
yeah, because I love first ofall, uh stuffed barbecue chicken. Yeah,
(09:31):
so, oh my gosh, Likewho does that? I'm excited.
I know. I told you.I told you. Whenever you need somebody
to uh you know, be yourtaster, your test me to tell Lectoria
to come me, I need tobe that um so um. On a
serious note that I mean on aserious note though, you know, being
(09:54):
a black owned business. Um,and being that that's gonna be June team
weekend, it's Father's Day weekend.Um. You know how important is this,
uh, not just for you,but you know as being a black
business owner like you started from justa dream and correct for some people to
(10:18):
understand that sometimes it's not attainable. They don't think it's touchable. You know,
they don't know they probably don't knowwhat steps to take. So can
you just drop like some tips onyou know, on how you you know,
made it so far in your successwith stuff when yeah, yeah,
and we've still got a long wayto go. But I mean, it's
(10:39):
it's an exciting roller coaster, youknow. Um, it's it's the start
of legacy, it's the start ofgeneration. Well yes, it has its
challenging it's challenges, but it's excitingat the same time, and it's the
perfect opportunity to change the trajectory ofBlack America. You know. The youth
now, you know, they allon social media and they think they see,
(11:03):
you know, quick success and youcan have it right away, but
it actually takes work to do it. So we are family owned business.
So to me, family is everythingis always about creating memories. So if
you are a youth or um,you know, high school, middle school,
and you were like, you knowwhat, I remember when mister Rays
and stuff, when he did thiscollaboration, Man, the whole community came
(11:26):
out. You know, I've seenthe mayor there, I've seen DJ Superstar
in line, you know, andshe she had two plays. You know.
You know it just create memories forkids. But at the same time
they getting experienced of, you know, two black brands coming together working together
(11:48):
for the betterment of the community andnot just in competition with one another.
Right And you know that's you madea good point, because um, it's
always that crab in the can mentalityfor some and it's kind of refreshing when
you get somebody that's in the sameindustry that you can be around and bounce
(12:09):
ideas and just follow through with theideas. Like that's not my strong point,
but maybe this other business owner is. And the collaboration in working together
is very important for us because that'show you leave a legacy, and that's
how you continuously leave it for thenext generation. So I just commend you
for even wanting to show mister Rayand you know, give him his flowers,
(12:31):
like where I think that is likebrilliant, I thought, I think
that is like so I'm really gonnatry and make it because he is such
a good person, like for real. And it was easy And it was
an easy decision to make because asbusiness owners, we share the same values,
we share the same culture. Soto me, it wasn't it was.
(12:56):
It has nothing to do with competitionon how much money we can make
about it. It's like we havethe same company values in the same community
and there's no you know, alternativemotives behind it. So it's like why
not do it, you know, because it's large corporations do it all the
time, and they do it fordifferent reasons, you know. But for
(13:18):
us in our community, we oughtto do it just for just to show
commodity, you know, partnerships thatwe can work together and not being competition
with one another exactly. Speaking of, is there anybody else in the city
or surrounding areas that you know youdesire to collaborate with? Oh my god,
but oh I want to because Idon't know what ooh now, oh
(13:41):
I can think of some stuff tostuff, but stuff in barbecue. Oh
so who else? Oh? Mygosh, oh my gosh. I mean
there's so many, and I cancollaborate with anybody. I can because my
mind is so creative and doing things. It don't have to be just Chicken
Wings, because we have we sellboarding just Chicken Wings. You know,
(14:03):
we got the sky Street Style whichand so I can see myself doing something
with um the breakfast club. Yeahyeah, get ready for a text message,
our phone call. You know, you know Frenchie's Chicken. I can
do something chicken man. Now thatwould be so dope barbecue that this is
(14:33):
so it's so many. Look atme, I'm talking about oh greedy,
greedy, Like my mind's like ohyeah, oh yes, oh man,
I think that is like that islike the bomb you got me? Oh
man? Man? So one moretime? How can people be apart?
(14:54):
And what time does everything kick offagain for next Sunday, June eighteenth.
Yeah, so everyone can join usright at the church on Sunday's bar even
before church starting on Friday, UmFriday the sixteenth, starting at eleven o'clock,
you can go to either to StuffWings locations for one of Richmond Avenue,
(15:15):
or you can go to mister Ray'slocation right there on Oyst at eleven
o'clock and we'll have it available limitedfor each day until sales out, and
then we go all the way intothe nineteenth. Mister Ray gonna close it
out for us on the nineteen becausewe're closed on Monday, and he's gonna
have a band, he's gonna havea DJ and we're just gonna have a
(15:35):
great time. So you can seeus alway from the sixteenth to the nineteen.
So it is going down. Andif y'all don't know what stuff wings
is, uh is right there whata traffic be neck to neck, bumper
to bumper Richmond right there at fiftynine. You can't miss it, So
you might as well just turn intothe parking lot get some stuff right and
(15:58):
uh, man, I really appreciateyou. I'm definitely, definitely um.
And you know what, I gotsome friends coming in that weekend. I
am going to bring them there Sundayand that's gonna be my Sunday Funday turn
up because I am actually off thatSunday. So yeah, for real,
praise God, I'll be there onethirty because two o'clock the lie over super
(16:23):
for real, man, drop yourig how everybody can follow you on everything.
Yeah, sure, so follow uson stuff Wings Underscore HTx and that's
st U f F D no Ew I n G S Underscore HTx and
that's the same UM slogan for Facebookand Twitter and Instagram. Man, Jared,
(16:44):
I cannot wait until next week.It is gonna be a hoba.
Oh. Before we get out ofhere, you plan on doing another UM
tiny desk. I don't want tosay tiny desk, but you know what
I mean. We're gonna do ab KC on Father's Day, so make
sure you bring your father this allstarting at two o'clock. We're gonna play
some old school music from mister Ray, some you know, some earth Wind
(17:06):
and Fire, some Osley Brothers, all Jays, all of that. Yeah,
all that he wanted to hear. All of that. Oh, that's
gonna be such a vibe. NextSunday it is going down stuff the Wings.
We have all the info on ourwebsite and on my blog. I'll
make sure I'll try to have itup this week. And Um, I'm
gonna be in the building. Giveme some stuff weeds and celebrate mister Ray.
(17:30):
Appreciate you so much, Jared, thank you. I appreciate the opportunity
anytime, and I'll see you nextSunday. Yes, man, man,
I cannot wait next Sunday. Itis going down. I'm gonna have all
the info on my blog ninety threeseven to be Houston dot com. Key,
we're supersar. All right, y'all. For these next ten minutes,
I am going to rewind an interviewthat I did with my friend Rod from
(17:52):
how These ice Cream and Tierra LaRue, my Boom marketing branch specialists. We
really talked about mental health and highand it is. And I think I'm
gonna end these last ten minutes withsome you know, little ten bits you
know what I'm talking about. Goodmorning, guys, Good morning. First
of all, thank y'all for wakingup so early to be this morning.
(18:15):
Um uh so real talk, Imean, well, not real talk,
but um quick question before we getinto everything, just give us a little
synopsis, a little bio, realquick about who both of you guys are.
Who wants to go first? First? Okay, okay, hey'a'm
(18:37):
I'm Pierre L. Ray Johnson.I'm the founder of POJ Agency, and
I have an innovative branding farm forthought leaders and I help um corporate executives
game changers just to monetize their brandand take everything to the next level through
social media, digital marketing and alsoproduct development. Okay, are you originally
from Euston. No, I'm not. I'm originally from Atlanta, Georgia's all
(19:00):
right, Georgia. Oh okay, yes, okay, yes, I know
you do, I know, Iknow you love and we have mister Rod.
Now he is not a stranger toface the v How you doing,
Hey, I'm doing well. Myname is Rod Batson. I'm a rich
step I'm from the Katie, Texasarea, but I'm known how the Homemade
(19:22):
ice Cream U a local ice creamshop that hires individuals with special needs.
UM. I also own a medicalsales company called Caliber Medical Products, where
we manufacture and distribute implanting, somebiologics. And my newest venture is a
central speech and ABA to clinic forkids with autism. UM to shout out
on the FISA and my business friendto Eddie on that man. You know
(19:45):
what? So that is a goodsegue to our first question because you just
named what three companies. So youjuggle a lot, whereas I'm sure Tierra
you juggle a lot and that's justwith you know, your business. You
know what I'm saying, So,um, what are some ways y'all?
Like, first of all, um, and I can tell you right now
(20:08):
my mental is all messed up andwe're just in what the for a fifth
month? So how do y'all juggleso many? Like? What are some
ways or what is your routine?I would say on juggling you know your
many businesses? You know, forme, it's it's been um. Surrounding
(20:30):
myself around positive people and genuine peoplehas really helped me a lot and not
trying to just so much be inthe in crowd more and so just be
around quantity. Uh. You know, coming up, it was all about
quantity, like quantity I mean, and now it's more about quality. For
me, It's not about how manypeople I surround myself with. It's about
the good people I surround myself in. And I think like, um,
(20:52):
like the how the heroes, justgoing inside how they and being around you
know, individuals session needs and seeingthe energy that they have, an energy
that you know reflects off of them. That kind of stuff is what keeps
me going, you know, alongwith shutting realistic goals that are obtainable and
achievable in a way where I canstill get rest and sleep and still be
(21:12):
a father to my kids without justburning myself out. So I think those
two things have helped me a lotwith juggling multiple businesses. Man, what
about you ta? Okay? Sofor me, outside of this praying and
saying folk push for real would beto shit everything down, Like I have
(21:33):
to take at least an hour ortwo hours throughout the week this is about
okay. I have to absolutely donothing, don't think about anything, don't
answer any phone calls, don't checkany emails. Because there's so much things
going on, and there's so manydreams that I have in so many businesses
that I want to build that sometimesI can find myself feeling stagnant and everybody
looking at me like, girl, are you crazy? You're doing so much
(21:53):
stuff. I'm like, I haven'teven reached the surf things of what I'm
trying to do. I have tolike sat down and recalibrate to make sure
I'm good, my mental is good, and to make sure i'm not you
know, I'm not tired, Likeokay, see you're just checking on myself,
like are you okay? Today, you know what I'm saying, making
sure I'm good, So just completelygiving myself time to just shut down and
(22:14):
just you know, think, thinkabout everything else, not just my business.
Right, So when you shut down, like, do you like turn
your phone off? Like what isthe I don't have such a heart,
y'all turning my phone off? Okay, I don't know phone off? You
really turn it off? I donot to, sorry, But when I
was working in corporate America, Iremember one time my boss was telling me
(22:36):
like, hey, this, umthis, like this business will run with
or without you, and I wasjust like, dang, like that makes
sense. So the reason why I'mlike, okay, I can give myself
an hour sometimes even a day everynow and then is because the world's still
gonna keep moving. If it's anemergency emergency, the people gonna how to
reach you. You know what,y'all, y'all, I have such the
hardest I have the hardest time sayingno, like like I have actually gone
(23:03):
to counseling for it, like I, um, well, my last counselant
session, like I you know, and I think that's what just runs me
down. And I'm look, look, I'm getting stuttering I'm starting out,
it's so hard for me to belike, no, I can't, I
can't. I feel like that's likea defeat or like yeah, oh no,
(23:25):
do y'all have that problem or I'msure now I struggle. I struggle
with that. I definitely struggle withthat. I'm a people's pleaser, and
so it's very, very very hardfor me to say no. That's that's
something that I actively struggle with today. And it could be a good and
a bad thing. No. Youknow, God blessed us to be able
to bless so many, so youknow, He's sends a lot of individuals
in different tasks your way, youknow. But but it can be a
(23:48):
struggle too because at times were alreadyspread, then you still want to make
sure that other people are straight. So that's a constant battle. I know,
yes, for sure. So whatabout you see it? Um Well,
for me, like I used tostruggle with saying no all the time,
but I have a little bit morebalanced now because I realize that I
can't ask a lot of people thethings that they can ask me, and
(24:11):
so like that helps me to likekind of like set up my boundaries.
And I did go to like therapy, and I talk to like my bishop
a lot, and so like youknow, you have to stat with like
your boundaries get none negotiables. Andeven though I am very nice and I
do help a lot of people,I have to ask myself first, like
can I ask them for the samething? Number one? And number two
is do I really had a timeto do that? And a lot of
time is no. So like overthe past like sixty days, I've really
(24:34):
just been like, Okay, Tiara, you can't do that. There's nothing
wrong with that because you really arebusy. Like sometimes people like okay,
well I can, I can squeezethis is but like, no, you
really can't. Like you really gotto tell yourself, I came out do
this today and it's gonna be okaybecause it's gonna get done. It might
get not to get done at thattime, but like it's gonna be okay.
So when you ask that question, like well this person be willing to
do this for me too, oram I over ex sending myself too much?
(24:56):
It's like sometimes you gotta take thatpause and really ref like dame,
like am I really gonna be ableto do this today? If not,
I kind of give people. Idon't necessarily say no, but I'll give
them an alternative. I give themsomething that I can't do to better accommodate
myself and them. Man, that'sa Let me that too. Let me
write that down. What you're saying, are willing to what? Are they
willing to do the same? Anddoes my com Does my com allow me
(25:22):
to give you one hundred percent ofwhat you need? If not, how
can I better accommodate myself and you? Oh? I hope y'all write notes
because this is because I'm writing mynotes down. Are they willing to do
the same? That is like? That is oh moving forward, I'm definitely
gonna have to use that when thatis good? Right there? You mentioned
two um important things, and Iwant to know you alls take because y'all
(25:45):
know growing up, uh, itwas kind of taboo for us to go
to counseling or to go to therapy. We just had to pray about it,
talk to God, go to church. Um, I'm a firm believer
and talking to that third party, and you know, going to church,
you say you can talk to yourbishop. You know, do y'all believe
(26:06):
in therapy? Are you know? What are some ways or you know any
recommendations on therapists you know, areyou know what form of therapy do you
use to cope with your mental onedollar saying I believe in therapy. I
think it is I think take careof your mental health is is very essential,
and I wish our community put moreemphasis on that. I think even
(26:29):
if you're not going through something, speaking to a third party can help you
unlock things within yourself that you maynot even no need to be unlocked.
So I really am a firm believeron therapy. But like anything, it's
what you put in. You know, you can't go to a therapist and
think that they're going to have themagic, you know, recipe for your
success or whatever may have you. It's really what the energy and efforts and
(26:52):
the truth that you put forth inthose sessions. But to answer you,
I think it's I think you sharinga counselor therapist is amazing and I wish
more people did it, you know, not just when they're struggling. Actually,
man, for real, what aboutyou, t I think therapy is
definitely needed sometimes about like my therapist'sgonna fire me. But I think it's
(27:14):
um. I think it's easier totalk to people that you don't know.
I don't know why that is,because it's like it's like you did a
clean slate. They can't judge you, like you can't see it. Like
I can tell her whatever, andshe's not gonna be like a girl like
you know, she's not gonna giveme a bias a pen. So I
think it's good to have a completestranger that you could talk to that you
can walk out like knowing like Okay, I just tell her everything, Like
(27:34):
even if you say something, it'snot gonna affect me, you know.
So like having somebody just to talkto that's like trained for that. Because
we're business owners, so we're likeexperts and what we do, Like therapists
go to school. They're experts andwhat they do, so they know things
and exercises that we don't know.So just like we require our clients and
customers to pay us for something orthey look to us for things, like,
(27:55):
therapists are like built for this.So it's like I could pour all
my problems out on this first andfeel great. So I definitely think that
therapists are needed for sure. Yeah, I definitely got ya for real.
Definitely definitely. Um. Another question, have y'all had any moments um where
you kind of like second guests yourcareer or your career decisions, you know,
(28:21):
and well, you know, Idon't answer this swamp, I think,
okay, I wouldn't say second guestsbecause with anything comes trials, trip
relations. I think a lot ofpeople check and guest things in their life.
When they use social comparison and theyuse other people's success, is like
if they use other people's success asa form of self sabotage instead of motivation.
(28:45):
And so for instance, I havehow the Homemade and we do well
sometimes and sometimes you know some uthird struggles and you get online and you
see the line that Turkey leghood, you know if different restaurants and you're like,
man, what are they doing? They're killing us, Like I want
to shut this down and try somethingelse, right, But you're using another
