Speaker 1 (00:01):
Well, hello and
welcome back to the Healthy
Living Podcast.
I'm your host, joe Grumbine, and today we're going to talk
about the podcast itself, andwe're almost two and a half
years into it, and I wanted togo back to the beginning and
talk about how this thing gotstarted and where it's headed,
(00:26):
and a little bit about me, thehost and some of the guests, and
really a lot of people areunaware of the significance of
this podcast, or at least whatthe significance could be, and I
just thought it would be a goodnot going to be a real long
episode, but we'll just get intoit a little bit.
And so, about two and a halfyears ago, I realized I was
(00:54):
entering a transition in my lifeand coming from many, many
years of a cannabis advocate andactivist and all of the
heartbreak and grief that thatbrought into my life, and I
realized that this wholecannabis world was not all it
(01:17):
was cracked up to be, and Ibegan seeking the truth about
things and started working withplant medicines.
This has actually gone backabout 10 years and I began a
journey working with peyote andother plant medicines.
That started opening my eyes tothings about people, myself
(01:42):
mostly myself relationships andtruth became more and more
important.
And you know I was doing thisother podcast called Cup of Joe.
I've done that, for I did thatfor over 10 years and I watched,
you know, an effort of tryingto make the world a better place
(02:03):
and supporting people thatneeded it and all of this.
And you know, as long as peoplewere getting something directly
from it, they'd be supportive.
But support falls off realquick as soon as somebody else
isn't benefiting.
And I realized that at onepoint and as my nonprofit, the
human solution was basicallycrumbling down because of just
(02:25):
lack of support.
Yeah, I started getting sometruths, some eye-opening
experiences, and so at one pointI realized you know what I'm
going to do, a different kind ofa podcast.
And you know, the Cup of Joe wasalways about building community
around the solidarity of peoplethat were persecuted by
(02:46):
cannabis prohibition.
And I always said from thebeginning, it wasn't even about
the plant, it was just aboutfreedom.
For me, I'm about freedom.
And then I realized it's morethan freedom, I'm about freedom
and the truth.
And then I thought about thisand know, seven years ago I
(03:07):
began this weight loss journeyand and really dramatically
changed my life.
All of these things are sort ofhappening at once, and out of
the old community, I startedseeing a new community forming
and different people anddifferent quality of people,
frankly, and people that hadintegrity that the old people
(03:31):
didn't have, less drama, lessproblems and more solutions and
I thought, wow, okay, we need tocultivate this.
And I thought, well, maybe thispodcast would be a way to do
that.
And so I just got started, likeI do and you know, asked
somebody who knew how to do thisto help set it up, and they got
(03:54):
me onto a platform.
And it's funny because for awhile, you know, they were
helping, a couple of people werehelping me and it just seemed
like it was pulling teeth.
Every time I gave a recordingto somebody to go and upload it
on the website, there was daysit took to get it done and and
always a problem uploading it.
(04:14):
Finally, I'm like, whatever,I'm gonna figure this out myself
turned out it was nothing andit was easier than I thought and
I've been doing it ever since.
And I thought to myself you'vebeen doing it ever since.
And I thought to myself, youknow where do we start?
What do we start talking about?
And I just said, well, anythingthat has to do with health.
And so we started bringing inguests and I just started asking
(04:36):
you know people I knew and youknow.
Dr Denise Canton was my firstguest and somebody who shared a
lot of experience with in thecannabis world and she's a
osteopath.
I thought she'd be make aperfect.
Actually, liz McDuffie was myfirst guest, but she decided she
(04:57):
didn't want it to be published,so we we never did, actually
haven't gone back to her.
Liz, I, when you're listening,I hope one day you decide to do
an episode with me, because wedo have so much to talk about.
Anyways, I started bringing inguests and we just started
talking and had a pretty widevariety of guests and different
people talking about science andpeople talking about Reiki and
(05:21):
people talking about you know, just different things.
And then over time, I thoughtabout it and I was like well,
I'm always trying to bring outother people's point of view and
I said but I've got a prettystrong point of view and at one
point I introduced myself as aguest.
I said, well, this opens thedoor to talk about anything I
(05:42):
want, as well as tying thingstogether, excuse me and I
thought that was going to be agood piece of the puzzle, and so
that opened up a lot andcreated a place for me to create
more content and really getinto some of these discussions.
(06:02):
And now, when we're talkingabout the truth and we're
talking about healthy living, Iwant to be really, really,
really clear.
I am actually talking about thetruth, so this podcast is never
directed towards a product orservice or you know.
I'm never going to tell you togo anywhere to do anything.
(06:25):
What I'm going to tell you todo is judge for yourself, and,
and as I'm learning about truths, I'm learning that there's no
very few, just hard, fast truths.
Mostly truths apply to anindividual and their
circumstance and everybody elsein their own way, and the health
(06:53):
industry and the health worldhas been rife with fraud and
manipulation and hucksters andevery kind of problem, because
people want to be healthy, andthere's been millions, dozens,
hundreds, thousands probably ofmovies written about it and all
the different snake oil scams.
And you know, one thing I cansay is use discernment, use your
(07:18):
own experience, and, if youhave the ability, there's a book
that I would highly encourageyou to read or listen to, and
it's called the Structure ofScientific Revolution by Thomas
Kuhn and this is I'm not quitefinished with it, but just the
(07:43):
gist of it and the way it'sbrought about.
It really gets into truths andwhat that means.
And, frankly, anybody who isadamant about a truth or a
solution and they're trying tosell you a thing or tell you
that this is what you need to do, it's this thing, they're
probably full of shit.
(08:03):
They may be misguided, they maybe just wrong.
They may, more often than not,I think, people have an
experience and it happens tothem, or they see it happen to
somebody else and theyextrapolate that from from that
that if it happened, it willhappen again, and that is so far
from reality.
(08:24):
Things happen to individuals.
Um, there's anomalies, there'sall these different things that
happen and then we or even youknow correlation, being
misconfused with causality.
It happens all the time.
So you know, I make naturalproducts.
(08:45):
I've been doing that for a longtime and I've had people go oh
well, I took your capsule and itgave me diarrhea and I'm like
really, my capsule gave youdiarrhea.
That's funny because in theyears and years of all the
people taking my capsulesincluding myself I'd never once
heard about that.
So why don't you tell me aboutwhat you did earlier in the day.
(09:05):
Oh well, you know, I was outdrinking last night and then I
woke up and, you know, drank alittle more and then ended up
having a greasy cheeseburger, uh, for for lunch.
And then, you know, and and Iwas like, oh, but my pill gave
you diarrhea, okay, cool, andand this is a thing that happens
all the time, and I realizedthat things just aren't so darn
(09:30):
cut and dry.
So if you listen and look at thewide variety of guests, as the
show's gotten a little morepopular, I have more and more
guests that come and find me andI bring on all kinds of people
people that have businesses, people that have.
Some of these people are prettyfriends.
They're talking about thingsthat make no sense.
(09:51):
Some people are adamant aboutpublished studies are the only
way to get information, and myexperience says that there's
bits and pieces from everybodythat can bring truth.
And again, who's truth?
In reference to what?
In what lens is it being lookedthrough?
(10:11):
And this book that I wastalking about really gets into
those things and how we judgethings.
Anybody who judges a thing, Iguarantee you, is not looking
through the eyes of truth unlessyour judgment acknowledges the
different possibilities or howit might impact somebody.
So, as I'm growing and learningall of these things and going
(10:35):
through my own transformationand that's another thing People
that say I can help you, I'mgoing to help you, I can do this
for you the real truth is, theonly person that can really help
you is you, and that's reallywhat this show is about.
I want you to get a widevariety of information and,
(10:58):
frankly, there's going to besome bullshit that comes into
this show, but I hope thatthere's enough truth that
resonates through here thatyou're like oh wow, that guy's
way off base, or maybe thatdoesn't apply to me, guy's way
off base, or maybe that doesn'tapply to me.
I think, having enough pointsof view, enough voices, all with
(11:22):
this common thread, you startto see patterns, you start to
see things, you start to see theforest for the trees and I
think that that's really a bigpart of this.
And, most importantly, since Iwas a kid, I've been trying to
build a strong community.
I grew up with a big Catholicfamily, italian and, you know,
love my family, but you know, frankly, for the size of it,
(11:42):
we're not that close.
I'm not that close to them, most of them.
There's a handful of my family, that we stay connected and all
of that, and I love them and youknow I love my whole family.
That's not the issue.
But you know your family isreally who you choose to spend
your time with and that's wheretruths start to come in.
You know we make excuses.
(12:03):
I make excuses for all kinds ofthings because I'm the eternal
optimist and I want everythingto be good and I want people to
be their potential.
But when you start gettinghonest and truthful about things
, all of a sudden attention andaction becomes truth and words
become possibilities.
And if you stop and think aboutthat and you start being honest
(12:27):
, you probably have a lot ofpeople in your life that really
aren't that into you and youmake excuses for them.
Oh, I know this person and andI think this person's important,
so I'm gonna justify that I'mtheir friend.
But the truth is, when actionsreally get involved, you start
(12:47):
to recognize and you start totake these filters out and it
becomes really apparent who'sinto you and who's not.
And if it's more work to buildor maintain a relationship than
you feel it ought to be, well,it probably is, and if you feel
a little stung because thatperson didn't respond well, they
(13:08):
probably aren't into you and wedon't want to hear it.
We don't want to feel it.
But if you get honest, all of asudden things start changing
your perspective and outlook andwhere you spend your attention
starts to change, and I know ithappened to me at one point.
You know I talked a little bitabout this experience where my
(13:29):
most recent journey began with acombo session and my eyes
opened up to all these thingsthat I was holding on to and I
began purging, purging.
I purged my whole business, Ipurged my people, I purged huge
amounts of resources that Ithought were important and just
started getting rid of stuff.
(13:49):
And it was the craziest thingbecause in its place just
started coming all these mostbeautiful people and
opportunities and awareness andI started working on myself
deeper and deeper and throughall of this, I get diagnosed
with fucking cancer and boom, everything changes.
(14:12):
All my priorities have changedand all the different things
that are important, and all of asudden the truth starts coming
more and more clear.
And this podcast has gotteneven more amazing, and so we
launched a whole section onovercoming cancer and other
(14:33):
obstacles, and I chose to takethe truth of my experience and
teach people how to find theirown truth, and that's really, I
think, where it's evolved to.
And so we now have an amazing, beautiful community, and I know
some of you that are listening, maybe for the first time.
(14:54):
I want you to know what this isabout, and it's not just me
blathering on about things Ithink are important or trying to
get you to think a certain wayor do a certain thing.
What I want you to do is startto look at yourself and
prioritize.
Figure out what is it that youreally want.
Why are you here?
Maybe you found this onaccident and maybe there's a
(15:16):
reason for that.
Maybe I'm talking to youdirectly.
I don't know.
I just know that I'm driven tohave this conversation and I
believe it helps people, and itcertainly helps me to clarify my
thoughts, and maybe that's theonly reason I do it.
I don't know, but I really knowthat this community is growing
now and the wealth of knowledgeand the understanding that I've
(15:42):
received from this.
From October 14th, when I wasfirst diagnosed, I didn't know.
I thought I knew about cancerbecause I helped people for 30
years providing cannabis oil andthe things that I thought I
knew about cancer because Ihelped people for 30 years
providing cannabis oil and andthe things that I thought I knew
.
Oh, my god, did I thought Iknew?
I thought I knew a lot of stuffand I I witnessed things and I
(16:02):
made it.
I made excuses for things and Ilooked at things in a light that
that reflected what I wanted tosee, and and I found things in
data that supported my beliefsand I didn't look for things
that opposed them.
I didn't do any research to tryto find contraindications and
problems with my work.
(16:23):
I just was always looking forthings to validate and because
of that, I held certain thingsto be self-evident and they
weren't, and I've come to findout, through some rigorous
research and trials and errors, that things are not always what
they're cracked up to be, andI'm not to say that these
miracles don't happen, and many, many, many people, including
(16:46):
myself, have been healed by this.
But that doesn't meaneverything is for everybody and
it doesn't mean things that arereally good for you can't cause
problems, and I think that'swhere the real truths come in.
I see people doing extremeactions and I am certainly one
of them and you know, I justrecently found out as a result
of my fasting that I wasdepriving myself of a key
(17:09):
nutrient that was locking out myimmune system's ability to see
this cancer, and all the workI've done with oxidative therapy
and all the fasting andeverything, and if I was to go
forward with this chemo that Iwas about tomorrow to begin, it
wouldn't have worked rightBecause I was deficient in a
(17:29):
mineral and because of thediligence and all the different
people I was talking to andlistening to and keying in on my
own body and receivingdiscernment, I got this
information and it's beentransformative and I believe now
I have the tools in place toreverse this thing quickly and
(17:51):
I'm so looking forward to towatching this happen.
There's two places that you canget value from this podcast.
One is just listening to it andyou know, look through.
There's there's 170 episodesand there's probably something
for everybody.
I recently upgraded some toolsthat are going to allow for
(18:16):
bookmarking and betterannotation, and so for people to
find a good thing that they'relooking for it's going to be
easier and easier.
I've also, within the last sixmonths, added a bunch of
subscriber content, and that'swhere we just go deep and get
more real and more painfullytruthful about things, more raw,
(18:41):
and it's also a way for peopleto show support for the
community and it's how thispodcast pays for itself.
Now it actually literally isself-supporting, and that's the
first step to a healthycommunity.
A healthy relationship canstand on its own.
It doesn't need to be fed bysomething, and I learned I think
that's where I got this cancerwas feeding so many people and
(19:02):
so many things and trying tohold things up, and I gave
myself away to the point where Ididn't have any left, and so
that's happening now.
We have this subscribersituation, so you can pop in for
three bucks a month and haveaccess to all the subscriber
episodes and I frankly would sayit's worth it.
That's where I'm sharing therest of my journey to help the
(19:25):
details of it.
Now I'm getting into topicalthings.
We'll we'll be discussing allthat on the outside, but um and
and it creates a place forsomebody to have a very raw and
candid information or or podcastthat's only shared with the
people that support the show.
So I think that's another levelin in this new community that
(19:46):
I've built.
It's built on trust and loveand and we have made ourselves
vulnerable to each other in waysthat you know my cannabis
community never offered.
It was always fraught withskullduggery and divas and hurt
feelings and harumph and allthis bullshit and and and.
Today we weep in front of eachother and we, we bear our souls
(20:10):
and we, we work to makeourselves better together and we
raise each other.
And we, we bear our souls andwe, we work to make ourselves
better together and we raiseeach other up.
And it's so different from whatwhat I've experienced before.
And so that's the second way isto support the show by
subscribing.
And the third way, maybe themost important, is to share
yourself, to become a, or maybea guest multiple times.
(20:34):
And you know I didn't go tocollege.
I've lived a dozen lives.
In this one life I've been apioneer, a seeker of knowledge,
a willingness to try things.
I'm pretty fearless andcourageous.
I've stepped into somedifficult things willingly and
(20:54):
knowingly, and I keep going.
And now, with this battle, Iknow that I feel like I'm
getting close to the end of itin the good way, and I feel like
soon I'll be able to come outof the fire once again, forged
again and able to carry moreweight and do more good, and
only this time.
I now have a community thathears me and values my
(21:18):
experience, and I'm so lookingforward to the things that I can
do when I can take the energyfrom my own healing and share it
with everybody else.
And what I've learned throughthe years is as a teacher I
realized that you can learnthings and learn things and
learn things.
But when you really get it, ithappens.
(21:41):
When you teach somebody else, when you have to share the
information and communicate it,it changes the way it sits in
your brain.
It changes the way you go fromsort of getting it or believing
a thing or knowing it tocompletely getting it, to where
now it's part of your fabric andyou don't have to stop and
(22:03):
check your notes and you don'thave to worry about did I say
the right words?
And all this thing.
You go and teach a thing andall of a sudden you just speak
it.
It's like the musician who justknows how to play the music, as
opposed to the guy who'spracticing and learning.
And so if you're interested inbeing a guest, you know, as
you're looking at this, you'llrealize that the range of topics
(22:27):
and hosts and guests are justso wide.
Anything that's connected tohealth, I said let's put it out
there and put it into the mix,and the more information we have
, the more the truth has theability to be sifted out.
And you know, I've rejectedsome guests, people that had
agendas that I just didn't thinkbelonged here or really wasn't
(22:51):
about health.
But most of the time, if we canfind a way to tie it together,
let's bring it in.
Maybe your experience will helpsomebody else, or maybe sharing
your experience will helpyourself.
Sometimes, saying things outloud that we've thought about or
(23:12):
read about or whatnot, andhaving that conversation out
loud brings it to life, and sothat's what this podcast is all
about.
I hope this has been informative, I hope you find it interesting
and I definitely welcome anyfeedback.
In this process I have beenbeaten to shit.
I don't have a whole lot tooffer but my words and thoughts,
(23:34):
and right now I've never beenin a more vulnerable spot in my
life.
But it's okay.
There's something reallyfreeing about surrendering and I
don't talk about, you know, myspirituality much, my
(23:58):
spirituality much.
But through all of this journeyI have become closer and closer
to my Creator and I do realizethat all these things that I'm
doing are guided and supportedand that this is my work, and I
appreciate everybody who's cometo join and be a part of this,
and I just hope that it can makeyour life richer, all right,
(24:19):
thank you.
This has been another episodeof the Healthy Living Podcast.
I'm your host, joe Grumbine, and I thank you for your support
.
