Paula Behrens (00:00):
Have you ever
felt like temptation sneaks in
just when you're trying to getcloser to God?
One small compromise, one wearymoment, and suddenly you're
questioning your strength andyour faith.
But here's the truth.
You're not alone and you're notwithout help.
In today's show, we'll bediving into how to recognize the
enemy's subtle schemes, how toanchor yourself in God's Word
(00:21):
and how to build aChrist-centered rhythm that
helps you stand firm everysingle day, because the goal
isn't perfection, it's realizingprogress in the power of Christ
.
But first funny story.
When I first began my seminarywork while serving two church
congregations full-time,everyone assumed I had my daily
devotional time perfectlyorganized.
(00:42):
But truth be told, there weremornings I could barely find
five minutes to catch my breath, let alone dive into deep
reflection.
One day, as I rushed out thedoor with mismatched shoes, I
realized that even in my chaosthere was a lesson.
Embracing God's grace andself-forgiveness, I realized
that true success in mydevotional life requires
(01:04):
prioritizing my spiritualpractices.
Are you finding it challengingto maintain your spiritual
practices or yearning for a morepeaceful, God-aligned day?
I'm Paula and I've been theretoo.
Balancing spiritual habits witha busy life can be difficult.
I long for a deeper connectionwith God but struggle with
(01:25):
consistency, then I found theperfect approach.
If you seek simple ways todeepen your connection with God,
this podcast is for you.
Friend, have you ever sat downwith your Bible, a cup of tea
and high hopes for a quietmoment with the Lord, only to
find your mind racing with to-dolists, your spirit distracted
or your heart dry?
I remember a season when myspiritual life felt more like a
(01:52):
checklist than a connection.
I had a book of prayers, aseminary degree and even my
favorite kneeling rail in myoffice, but truthfully, I was
just going through the motionsat that time.
I was hungry for more, morepeace, more presence, more of
God.
I was showing up with all theright tools, but none of the
soul-satisfying stillness Icraved.
My time with God becamesomething I did not something I
(02:12):
delighted in.
I craved intimacy with God, butI didn't know how to break out
of that cycle of routinespirituality.
Then the Lord gently remindedme, he never asked me for
polished prayers or perfectdiscipline.
He just wanted my presence andfrom that moment on I began
creating a space to simply bewith him.
I built a new rhythm, one thatwas deeply rooted in grace,
(02:36):
filled with scripture andsupported by the soothing
presence of his creation, including essential oils, that
helped me slow down and breathein deeply.
That sacred rhythm is what Inow share in the Aroma of Christ
Coaching Hour.
This one-on-one session is forthe person who's ready to stop
striving and start resting inGod again.
Whether you're spirituallyweary, stuck in a routine or
(02:59):
longing for a fresh encounterwith the Holy Spirit, this hour
is your invitation to beginagain with grace.
I'll walk alongside you tocreate a personalized devotional
routine that works with yourreal life, not against it.
Together, we'll craft apractice that helps you feel
grounded, nourished and deeplyconnected to God mind, body and
(03:20):
spirit.
You don't have to keep tryingto figure it out all on your own
.
There's a simple way to grow infaith and draw near to God, and
I'd be honored to help you findit.
Let's breathe in his peace.

Purpose in Christ, the podcastwhere we grow together in God's
Truth, one biblical step at atime.
(04:07):
Whether you're driving tosoccer, practice, folding
laundry or sitting together as afamily around the table, thank
you for inviting us into yourday.
Let me ask you somethingimportant.
Have you ever faced a choicebetween right and wrong and felt
the tug of temptation on yourheart?
Of course you have.
We all have, it's part of life.
And believe it or not, it'salso something Jesus experienced
(04:30):
.
In today's episode, we'rediving into what it means to
overcome temptation God's way, with practical tools for every
member of your family, from theyoungest listener to mom, dad,
grandma, tweens and even teens.
We're using a devotionalcompanion guide called
Overcoming Temptation, which ispart of our Faith Building Club
monthly membership.
(04:50):
Inside the club you'll findhelpful resources like this one
to grow your family's faithtogether.
In fact, we have a seven-dayfree trial going on at this time
.
More about that later.
So go ahead, breathe in thatcalming frankincense or lavender
essential oil, settle into thatcozy spot and get ready,
because this isn't just anepisode, it's a journey.
(05:14):
Let's start with a simple truth.
Temptation is something everyperson faces and it isn't a sin
to be tempted.
The real question is what youdo when temptation creeps in.
For our younger listeners, temptation might look like
sneaking an extra cookie whenmom says no or blaming the dog
for a broken toy.
For tweens, maybe it's thepressure to fit in.
(05:35):
Or for teens, maybe stayingsilent about your faith is your
temptation.
For adults, it may bedishonesty, frustration or even
a temptation to become bitter.
James, chapter 1, verses 14through 15 gives us a clear
picture, it says (05:51):
But one is
tempted by one's own desire,
being lured and enticed by it.
Then, when this desire isconceived, it gives birth to sin
and that sin, when it is fullygrown, gives birth to death.
Whoa, that is serious stuff.
(06:13):
Let's break it down for everyonelistening.
Temptation starts in our hearts.
It's not the cookie or the meanfriend or the phone screen that
causes us to stumble.
It's our own desire and itgrows if we don't stop it.
Temptation is like a snowballrolling down a hill it starts
small but it picks up speed andturns into sin and eventually
consequences will follow.
But the good news is this wehave a way to stop it before it
(06:37):
grows.
Imagine your heart like agarden.
If temptation, like a weed, starts to grow, you can pull it
out before it chokes out theflowers.
With God's help, we can do justthat.
Now here's what's amazing,Jesus himself was tempted.
He gets it.
In Matthew, chapter 4, verses 1through 11 right after he was
(06:57):
baptized, he went into thewilderness.
He was hungry, alone, tired.
And guess who shows up?
That's right, Satan.
Satan tries three things.
First, he tries to appeal toJesus' hunger, tempting him
saying, turn these stones intobread.
Then he tries to get Jesus totest God's protection saying,
(07:17):
throw yourself down from thetemple and see if God will
protect you.
Finally, Satan offers Jesuspower saying, worship me and
I'll give you everything you see.
Each time Jesus resisted byquoting the Bible, God's word
saying, it is written.
Hebrews, chapter 4, verse 15reminds us, we do not have a
(07:39):
high priest who is unable tosympathize with our weaknesses,
but we have one who was temptedin every way, just as we are.
Yet he was without sin.
Right now, if you are willing, Iwant you to pause and ask
yourself (07:52):
What's one temptation
I've faced recently.
Jesus said to his discipleswatch and pray so that you will
not fall into temptation.
The spirit is willing, but theflesh is weak, which tells us
two things.
First, that we need to stayalert so we can recognize
(08:14):
temptation when it presentsitself.
And second, we should pray, asking God for strength before
we actually need it.
Scripture also tells us tobring everything to God with
prayer and he will give us peace.
So let's get practical.
As you pray, diffuse or apply adrop of lavender or
frankincense to your wrist.
These oils are known to calmthe mind and help you focus.
(08:36):
Let them be sensory remindersthat God's peace is present.
In Psalm, chapter 119, verse 11we hear: I treasure your word in
my heart so that I may not sinagainst you.
This means we're not justreading the Bible, we're hiding
God's word deep inside.
So when temptation shows up, weare ready.
(08:57):
Just like when Jesus said it iswritten, we can also speak
truth over the lies oftemptation.
So it's like this.
Temptation says (09:05):
It's okay to
lie, no one will know.
But God's word says (09:09):
The Lord
detests lying lips (Proverbs 12:
22).
Temptation says (09:15):
Be mean.
They deserve it.
God's word says (09:18):
Be kind and
compassionate to one another (
Ephesians 4 (09:22):
32).
Ecclesiastes 4, 9 through 10tells us: Two are better than
one, for if they fall, one willlift the other.
You see, God never intended forus to face temptation alone.
That's why we have church, that's why we have faith
community groups, Christianfriends and our own family.
(09:43):
Having someone to be honestabout your struggles with opens
the door for that someone tohelp you back up again.
When you fall off your bike.
What do you need?
You need someone to pick you up, dust you off and say, you've
got this.
Ephesians, Corinthians 6 (09:58):
18
says
immorality.
All other sins a person commitsare outside the body, but
whoever sins sexually sinsagainst their own body.
Fleeing from temptation meansrunning away from anything that
can harm our hearts, our bodiesand our faith.
And one of the most powerfulstories about fleeing is in
(10:20):
Genesis, chapter 39, whereJoseph runs from Potiphar's wife
.
Sometimes the best response totemptation is not to fight, it's
to flee.
Now fleeing might look like, turning off the TV show that's
not God honoring, walking awayfrom gossip at lunch, saying no
to peer pressure, exiting a chatroom that makes you feel uneasy
(10:42):
.
It's okay to walk away.
In fact it's wise.
In Galatians 5, 22 through 23,we hear: But the fruit of the
spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness andself-control.
Did you catch that last one?
Self-control, that's yoursecret weapon.
The Holy Spirit doesn't justhelp us say no to temptation.
(11:05):
The Holy Spirit within us helpsus want better things.
When temptation comes, thefruit of the Spirit is already
there to help us respond withlove, patience and especially,
self-control.
Let's wrap up by saying thisclearly and confidently.
With God, we can overcometemptation.
(11:29):
Here's a quick recap.
These are the action steps.
One (11:32):
Pray and depend on God.
Talk to him all day long.
Two (11:37):
Know scripture.
Let the Bible be your sword.
Three (11:41):
Learn from your
community.
You are not alone.
Four (11:45):
Flee from temptation.
Run like Joseph.
Five (11:48):
Grow the fruit of the
Spirit, especially self-control.
Let's guide our children andgrandchildren and also remind
ourselves that in this world wewill face challenges and
temptations, but Jesus hasalready triumphed over the world
.
And remember we are never alonein our struggles.
So the next time you're temptedto lie, yell, give up or do
(12:11):
something you know is not God'sbest for you, stop and pray,
remember God's word and reachout to your support team.
Victory is not only possible,it is promised.
