The first words of John's Gospel launch us into eternity - "In the beginning was the Word" - before bringing us face-to-face with the astonishing reality that this eternal Word "became flesh and made his dwelling among us." Unlike the synoptic Gospels that rush through parables and miracles, John slows everything down, inviting us to linger in sacred moments and see Jesus through fresh eyes.

Written by "the disciple whom Jesus loved," this Gospel pulses with intimacy and wonder. From the wedding at Cana where ordinary water becomes extraordinary wine, to the garden where the risen Lord speaks Mary's name with such tenderness that her grief transforms to joy - John reveals a Jesus who knows us personally and loves us completely.

Throughout this bird's-eye journey, we explore the four beautiful sections of John's Gospel: the majestic Prologue introducing Jesus as the eternal Word; the Book of Signs showcasing seven miraculous works that reveal His identity; the Book of Glory focusing on His passion and Resurrection; and the poignant Epilogue where Jesus cooks breakfast on the shore and restores Peter after his denials. We ponder His seven powerful "I am" declarations - bread of life, light of the world, good shepherd, resurrection and life, way, truth, life, and true vine - each addressing our deepest human needs.

This Gospel speaks directly to our modern spiritual hunger. Are you feeling empty? Jesus is the bread of life. Lost? He's the good shepherd. Stumbling in darkness? He's the light of the world. The invitation of John's Gospel isn't just to learn about Jesus but to experience Him - to believe and receive the abundant life He offers. As John himself writes, "These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." Dive deep into this transformative Gospel and discover how Jesus is calling your name today.

Paula Behrens (00:01):
Have you ever wondered what makes the Gospel
of John so different from theother Gospels?
How did John develop such adeep connection with Jesus and
what does it mean for your lifetoday that Jesus is the Word
made flesh?
Friend, this isn't just history, it's an invitation into joy,
intimacy and a life in His name.
Stay with me because togetherwe're going to take a bird's eye

(00:23):
journey through the Gospel ofJohn that will change the way
you see Jesus forever.
But first funny story.
When I first began my seminarywork while serving two church
congregations full-time,everyone assumed I had my daily
devotional time perfectlyorganized.
But truth be told, there weremornings I could barely find
five minutes to catch my breath, let alone dive into deep

(00:46):
reflection.
One day, as I rushed out thedoor with mismatched shoes, I
realized that even in my chaosthere was a lesson.
Embracing God's grace andself-forgiveness, I realized
that true success in mydevotional life requires
prioritizing my spiritualpractices.

(01:07):
Are you finding it challengingto maintain your spiritual
practices or yearning for a morepeaceful, God-aligned day?
I'm Paula and I've been theretoo.
Balancing spiritual habits witha busy life can be difficult.
I longed for a deeperconnection with God, but
struggled with consistency.
Then I found the perfectapproach.

Friend, have you ever sat downwith your Bible, a cup of tea
and high hopes for a quietmoment with the Lord, only to
find your mind racing with to-dolists, your spirit distracted
or your heart dry?
I remember a season when myspiritual life felt more like a
checklist than a connection.
I had a book of prayers, aseminary degree and even my
favorite kneeling rail in myoffice, but, truthfully, I was

(01:55):
just going through the motionsat that time.
I was hungry for more, morepeace, more presence, more of
God.
I was showing up with all theright tools, but none of the
soul satisfying stillness Icraved.
My time with God becamesomething I did not something I
delighted in.
I craved intimacy with God, butI didn't know how to break out

(02:15):
of that cycle of routinespirituality.
Then the Lord gently remindedme he never asked me for
polished prayers or perfectdiscipline.
He just wanted my presence andfrom that moment on, I began
creating a space to simply bewith him.
I built a new rhythm, one thatwas deeply rooted in grace,
filled with scripture andsupported by the soothing

(02:36):
presence of his creation, including essential oils that
helped me slow down and breathein deeply.
That sacred rhythm is what Inow share in the Aroma of Christ
Coaching Hour.
This one-on-one session is forthe person who's ready to stop
striving and start resting inGod again.
Whether you're spirituallyweary, stuck in a routine or

(02:58):

(03:20):

I'd be honored to help you findit.

All right, it's time to getstarted.
Grab your Bible, dust off yourjournal and cozy up to your
favorite beverage and let's divein.
We are about to step into one ofthe most beautiful journeys in
all of Scripture, a bird's-eyeview of the Gospel of John.
If you've ever longed to feelcloser to Jesus or to see him

(04:07):
not just as a figure in history, but as the living Son of God
who calls you by name, thisstudy is for you.
The Gospel of John is differentfrom the other three Gospels
(Matthew, Mark and Luke).
Those books move quicklythrough the parables and
ministry events.
John though, slows everythingdown.
He invites us to linger, tolean in close, to see Jesus with

(04:27):
fresh eyes and to believe.
Take a deep breath right hereat the beginning.
Inhale slowly, hold it for amoment and exhale.
Let your heart be still.
This isn't just another Biblestudy.
It's an opportunity toencounter Jesus anew.

(04:49):
Many scholars believe that whenJohn referred to the disciple
whom Jesus loved, he wasactually speaking of himself.
That little phrase tells ussomething important.
This book is written by someonewho truly knew Jesus' love and
wanted us to know it too.
He even tells us exactly why hewrote.
In John, chapter 20, verse 31he says, These are written that

(05:12):
you may believe that Jesus isthe Messiah, the Son of God, and
that by believing you may haveLife in his name.
Life, that's the word thatpulses through John's Gospel.
Life in his name, eternal lifethat starts the moment we
believe.
Friend, if you've ever felt dry, weary or stuck, this Gospel

(05:35):
will refresh your soul.
Pause for a moment and whisperto yourself, life in his name.
Say it again, but this time asa prayer, Lord, I want life in
your name.
John's Gospel falls into fourbeautiful parts.

(05:55):
First, the prologue in chapter1, where we meet Jesus as the
eternal Word made flesh.
Then comes the book of signs, stretching from chapter 1, verse
19, through chapter 12, whereseven miraculous works reveal
who Jesus is.
Next is the book of glory, chapters 13 through 20, focusing

(06:15):
on Jesus' passion, death andResurrection.
And finally, the epilogue inchapter 21, where Jesus meets
his disciples on the shore andrestores Peter.
Let's take a sweeping butinteresting journey through each
section.
The prologue in chapter 1 isbreathtaking.
It begins not with a manger ora star, but with eternity.

(06:37):
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and
the Word was God.
Can you feel the majesty ofthose words?
Before time began, beforecreation, Jesus was there.
He is the eternal Word, theLight shining in the darkness.
And John tells us that thisWord became flesh and made his

(06:59):
dwelling among us.
Pause for just a moment and letthat truth sink in.
The God of the universe choseto step into our world, not from
a distance, not reluctantly, but personally and lovingly.
Picture it, the eternal Godwrapping himself in human skin,

(07:22):
walking into our story, bringingLight that no darkness can
overcome.
Take a deep breath and whisperin your heart, the Light shines
in the darkness and the darknesscannot overcome it.
From chapter 1, verse 19, allthe way through chapter 12, John

(07:44):
shows us seven miraculous signsof Jesus.
These are not just random actsof power.
They are sermons in action.
At a wedding in Cana, Jesusturns water into wine.
An ordinary moment becomesextraordinary.
Doesn't that sound like our ownlives when he takes something
plain and fills it with joy?

(08:04):
Later he heals the official'sson simply with his word,
showing that his authorityreaches across time and space.
Then we see him at the pool ofBethesda, speaking to a man who
had been paralyzed for 38 years.
Jesus restores what seemedpermanently broken.
On a hillside, with thousandsgathered, he multiplies five

(08:27):
loaves and two fish untileveryone is satisfied.
It's a picture of the bread oflife, feeding our deepest hunger
.
On the water he walks in themidst of a storm, showing that
fear and chaos are no match forhim.
Then comes the man born blind.
Jesus not only gives sight, butreveals that true blindness is

(08:47):
spiritual an inability torecognize him as the light of
the world.
And finally, outside the tombof Lazarus, he calls: Lazarus,
come out and the dead man livesagain.
Pause here and ask yourselfwhich of these signs touches my
heart most deeply today?
Is it the transformation, healing, provision, power over

(09:15):
fear, light in darkness, orresurrection life?
Alongside all these signs, Jesusmakes seven bold declarations,
each beginning with I am.
He says.
I am the bread of life, I amthe light of the world, I am the
gate, I am the good shepherd, Iam the resurrection and the

(09:36):
life, I am the way, the truthand the life, and I am the true
vine.
Each statement echoes the voiceof God in the Old Testament,
when he told Moses, I am who Iam.
So which of these do you mostneed to hear right now?
Do you need bread because youfeel empty?
Do you need a shepherd becauseyou feel lost?

(09:58):
Do you need resurrectionbecause you feel stuck in
despair?
Maybe you need a vine becauseyou're weary and long to stay
connected.
Whisper that statement quietly.
Let it be an anchor for youtoday.
From chapter 13 onward, Johnslows the pace.

(10:20):
Nearly half of his gospel isdedicated to the final week of
Jesus' life.
It's often called the Book ofGlory.
In the upper room, Jesus kneelsand washes the disciples' feet.
Can you picture that?
The Son of God stooping lowwith a towel around his waist?
What love.

(10:46):
He gives his friends a newcommandment: Love one another as
I have loved you.
He comforts them with promisesof the Holy Spirit, the advocate
who will guide and remind them.
And in John 17, he prays notjust for the disciples sitting
around him, but for you and forme.
Imagine that, Jesus prayed foryou on the night before he went
to the cross.
He prayed that you would be onewith him, safe in his love,

(11:07):
filled with his joy.
Can you receive that truth?
Jesus prayed for you.
Then come the arrest, the trialand the cross.
But in the Gospel of John, evenmore so than the other Gospels,
Jesus emphasizes he is incontrol and that he willingly
lays down his life.

(11:28):
And then, in chapter 20,everything changes.
The stone is rolled away.
Mary Magdalene weeps in thegarden, but when the Risen Jesus
speaks her name, she knows it'shim.
Thomas doubts, but when he seesthe scars he declares, my Lord
and my God.
Pause and imagine Jesus callingyour name with the same

(11:51):
tenderness he used with Mary.
Can you hear it?
Your name spoken with love bythe Risen Lord.
The Gospel closes in chapter 21with a gentle scene.
The disciples, still uncertain,go fishing.
At dawn, Jesus meets them onthe shore, cooks breakfast and

(12:12):
shares a meal with them.
And then he turns to Peter.
Three times Peter had deniedhim.
Three times Jesus asks, do youlove me?
And each time Jesus restoresand recommissions him, feed my
sheep.
Jesus does not leave us in ourfailures.
He meets us, restores us andcalls us again into his mission.

(12:33):
Take a moment right now and askyourself, where do I need
Jesus' restoring love right now?
The Gospel of John weavestogether beautiful themes.
It proclaims that Jesus is God.
It calls us to believe not justwith our minds but with our
whole hearts.
It paints contrast betweenLight and darkness, inviting us

(12:55):
to walk in the Light.
It shows us that true glory isfound at the cross and it
invites us into intimacy withChrist, to lean against his
heart, just as John did.
And friend, John's words are notlocked in the past.
They are alive for us today.
If you are weary, John says, rest in the shepherd's arms.

(13:17):
If you are uncertain, John says, look to the way, the truth and
the life.
If you are stumbling indarkness, John says, step into
the Light.
If you are thirsty, he says, drink of the living water.
This gospel is more thanhistory.
It's an invitation, aninvitation to believe, to

(13:39):
receive life and to live withjoy.
Every story, every sign, everyword whispers the same truth,
Jesus is the Son of God and inhim is Life.
Take one more deep breath, inhale his love, exhale your
worries.
As we've seen today in theGospel of John, everything

(14:00):
points us to Life in His name,Life that is full, free and
