mid-90s yes, you heard thatright, since the mid-90s.

insights gained over the years.
But recently I had a uniqueopportunity I attended not one,
but two major collisionconferences for some of the
largest repair groups in ourindustry.
Events that I've neverexperienced before and, honestly
, the immersion into theirculture, the celebration of
(00:42):
achievements, the palpable senseof community.
It was a humbling and, frankly, inspiring experience for me.

Hey everybody, welcome back tothe MindRidge podcast.
Today I want to talk aboutsomething that's truly resonated
with me lately, something Ifeel absolutely compelled to
share with you, the hardworkingshop owners and managers who are
the backbone of this automotivecollision industry.
Now, for those of you that knowme or have been tuning in for a
(02:27):
while, you know I've beenaround the block a few times.
In fact, I've been attendingindustry events since the
mid-90s.
Yes, you heard that right sincethe mid-90s.
It's a lot of conferences, alot of handshakes and a lot of
insights gained over the years.
But recently I had a uniqueopportunity.
I attended not one, but twomajor collision conferences for
(02:48):
some of the largest repairgroups in our industry, events
that I've never experiencedbefore and, honestly, the
immersion into their culture, the celebration of achievements,
the palpable sense of community.
It was a humbling and, frankly, inspiring experience for me,
and that's why I'm so excited todedicate this episode to you,
especially those of you thatmight be newer to the industry
(03:11):
or have never taken a plungeinto attending these kinds of
events.
My goal today is simple to shedsome light on the incredible
value and tangible benefits ofjoining a performance group.
Maybe, just maybe, I can piqueyour interest enough for you to
dip your toes in the water andsee what you've been missing.
Think back to the mid-90s.
The conference landscape wasdifferent.
(03:31):
Right, it was mostly the paintcompanies hosting events along
with NACE.
Before it came part of SEMA andoccasionally the local job or
trade show.
The focus was often on thelatest products, like maybe a
new 2K primer, an improved bodyfiller, maybe a new putty, and
while those things are important, they didn't always have the
(03:52):
sizzle to pull busy body shopowners away from their base.
Back then, many body shops aswe called them before the term
collision center really tookhold viewed taking time away
from fixing cars as a loss, notan investment.
Plus, the repair methods andtechnology was relatively stable
.
The urgent need to constantlykeep up wasn't the same as it is
today and, let's be honest, there was a certain pride, shall
(04:15):
we say, amongst many shopowners back then.
Some might even say areluctance, to share the idea of
revealing your secret sauce tothe competition.
Unthinkable Phrases like Idon't need anybody's help, I
know everything I need to know,or even the classic I'm doing
great.
I still have money in the bankafter paying all the suppliers
(04:36):
those were common sentiments.
Right, it was a differentmindset.
We're good on our own.
I don't want the shop down thestreet knowing my business
Listen, I handle all theestimates, I fix the cars and
the answering machine takes careof the rest.
Sound familiar?
But fast forward to the 2020sand the landscape has completely
changed.
Right Today, I truly believethere's essentially two paths
(04:56):
you can take in this industry.
Path A you can continue to goit alone.
You can try your best.
Stay on top of theever-evolving equipment needs,
the dizzying array of paintmaterial options, the constant
stream of training opportunities, the often complex DRP
(05:16):
requirements and concessions, the critical OEM recommended
repair procedures, stringentvehicle safety regulations and
the ever-changing environmentaland governmental laws.
Then consider the competitivepay landscapes, and the list
goes on and on and on.
It's a monumental task, aconstant uphill battle.
Or path B you can choose tojoin an industry group or a
(05:36):
paint company performance group.
You can surround yourself witha network of fellow shop owners
that have already navigatedthese challenges, who have
identified the best practicesand who have learned from their
mistakes, and who have found theanswers to the very questions
that might keep you up at night.
These individuals might nothave written the entire playbook
yet, but they're severalchapters ahead of you and,
(05:59):
crucially, they are willing toshare what they've learned.
Think about it you canliterally condense time, shrink
years of learning into days byimmersing yourself in the
collective wisdom of your peers.
The idea of sharing knowledgeand collective power isn't new.
When you have more than twopeople working together on a
concept or a business, thecombined focus creates something
(06:20):
truly powerful, what's oftenreferred to as a mastermind or a
third mind.
The old saying two heads arebetter than one is more than
just a cliche.
Interestingly, while theconcept of peer support can be
found in various formsthroughout history, one of the
earliest documented samples isfrom 1727, when Ben Franklin
(06:41):
formed the Junto Group.
This group consisted of 12members from diverse professions
who met weekly for 36 years topromote useful knowledge and get
this.
In the early 1900s, even USPresident Harding was part of a
mastermind group called theVagabonds.
Even US President Harding waspart of a mastermind group
called the Vagabonds, whichincluded industry titans like
Thomas Edison, Henry Ford andHarvey Firestone.
(07:03):
Talk about masterminds.
These were the individuals thatshaped the future of our
country.
If you're looking for acompetitive edge for your
business or a more effectivejumpstart to your personal
development, I'll make yourfirst step super simple.
It is a fact that an incrediblenumber of the most successful
business owners, nearly half ofthe Fortune 500 companies,
top-earning professionalathletes, entertainers and
(07:26):
industry leaders likeMicrosoft's Bill Gates, former
President Bill Clinton, oprahWinfrey, richard Branson,
amazon's Jeff Bezos andSalesforce's Mark Benioff all
have one thing in common theyall have at least one coach and
some have several that they workwith on a consistent basis,
someone that helps guide, mentorand support them, challenge
(07:46):
them, help them set and achievegoals that move them forward and
then hold them accountable tofollow through, driving personal
and professional growth.
Working with a coach has manysubstantial benefits.
Just for an example, 80% ofcoaching clients report improved
self-esteem or self-confidencethanks to coaching.
99% of individuals andcompanies that hire a coach
(08:06):
report being very satisfied and96% would do it again.
If, deep down, you know it'stime to make those improvements
in your business or yourpersonal life that you've kicked
down the road year after year.
If you're tired of knowingthere's a better version of you
waiting to shine, but unsure ofhow to bring that version to
light.
If you're tired of wanting toenjoy a more successful business
(08:27):
but not sure how to start.
And if you don't want to goanother 12 months without better
results, but you don't want togo it alone, then take the first
step.
It's super simple.

Now bringing it back to ourindustry, there are several
types of groups that you can getinvolved with.
Today, there are large,performance-based structured
coaching organizations thataddress every aspect of running
a successful collision repairbusiness.
Today, there are groupsspecifically focused on the
unique challenges andefficiencies of small to medium
(09:09):
MSOs medium MSOs and then thereare the high performance groups
offered by major paint companies, such as Axel Noble's A-Coat
Select, ppg's MVP BusinessSolutions, exalta's Local
Performance Groups and BusinessCouncils, sheridan Williams'
Collision Corps and BASF'sVision Plus.
Now, many of these paintcompanies also host large
(09:30):
regional or national conferenceswhich, as I recently
experienced, are incrediblyvaluable in themselves.
Now, beyond the paint companies, there are also dedicated
coaching and mentoring groups, like Collision Advice's Spartan
300 group, and then theCertified Collision Group, dave
Luehr's Body Shop Solutions andCollision Hub.
Now, these offer a mix ofvirtual and in-person support,
(09:54):
with the first two of thesehosting major annual conferences
supported by vendors and otherindustry stakeholders.
From my own experienceattending many of these events,
both from the paint companiesand the coaching groups, I've
seen firsthand the keyadvantages and benefits of being
part of these organizations andI want to share some of those
with you.
Number one structured coaching, direction and focus.
(10:17):
These groups lay out clearroadmaps for growth in various
areas.
Whether it's processimprovements, advanced
estimating and blueprinting, front office training and
culture, or profitability's bestpractices.
Having that expert guidance anda consistent focus can propel
your shop forward at anincredible pace.
It truly makes a massivedifference.
(10:37):
Number two financial educationor growth.
You'll gain a deepunderstanding of the crucial
financial aspects of yourbusiness what to measure, how to
measure it and how to makenecessary improvements.
Learning to know your profitand loss statement like the back
of your hand and maximizingyour actual net profits becomes
a reality.
Having financial expertsdedicated to working with you
(11:00):
could significantly improve yourbottom line.
3.
Being held accountable.
Learning new strategies is onething, but actually implementing
them is another, and it's muchmore difficult.
These groups provide a crucialelement accountability.
Your coaches and your peerswill help you stay on track with
your goals and implement thechanges needed for success.
(11:22):
Accountability truly breedssuccess.
Number four continuing education.
In this rapidly evolvingindustry, continuous learning is
non-negotiable.
These groups foster a cultureof personal and professional
development, constantly feedingyou new information, innovative
ideas, strategic thinking andvaluable lessons learned from
(11:44):
both successes and failures.
It keeps you hungry for moreknowledge and growth.
Number five your network equalsyour net worth.
This is a fundamental truth inbusiness.
The most successful shops tendto have the strongest and most
extensive networks within theindustry, and that's not just a
coincidence.
Collision groups excel atfostering connections and
(12:06):
actively helping their membersexpand their own networks.
If you want to increase yourworth, connect with more people
in your business.
But there's one benefit that'sharder to quantify, harder to
put into words, but incrediblypowerful A feeling of belonging.
It's about being part ofsomething bigger than yourself
or your individual business thegenuine sense of brotherhood and
(12:26):
sisterhood that forms withinthese groups.
I witnessed this firsthand atmy conferences I recently
attended.
There was a distinct familyatmosphere in the air.
Most shop owners had forgeddeep friendships with other
members and the level of bondingwas truly remarkable.
New members were welcomed withopen arms and made to feel like
they belonged.
There was a genuine celebrationof each other's success and
(12:48):
deep respect and admiration fortheir coaches and leaders, all
driven by a shared commitment tocontinuous improvement.
Frankly, I see a level ofcommitment to excellence within
these groups that is oftenmissing in the thousands of
shops that choose not toparticipate in these
organizations.
So while I've outlined severalcompelling reasons to consider
(13:09):
joining a collision shopcommunity, perhaps the most
powerful driver is thefundamental choice you face.
You have two paths before you,and those choices will
undoubtedly shape your future.
There's incredible strength innumbers.
We can win together or we cantry to go it alone, but the
choice, ultimately, is yours.
(13:30):
Well, that's all I had for today.
Thanks for tuning in today.
I sincerely hope this has givenyou some food for thought and
maybe even sparked some interestin exploring the power of
performance groups.
Do your research, reach out tothese organizations and see if
one is the right fit for you.

smartest decisions you can makefor the future of your business.
