Welcome back to the podcast, everybody, I am excited to have

(00:21):
you here today.
Today, we are gonna be talkingabout naming your podcast, so
this is going to be aninteresting one if you are
obviously interested in startinga podcast.
If you are not, I would saylisten anyway, because this
could apply to if you're naminga blog or a YouTube channel or
you know, you're just namingyour business.

(00:42):
Even so, it can be useful, butlisten in to this conversation
and let me know what name youwould choose.
So, even if you haven't planneda podcast, what would you call
yours?
Let me know.
So, before we jump into today'sepisode, I do want to remind you
.
I'm going to bang on about itand you are going to get sick of
me, but I need to let you knowbecause there will be somebody

(01:02):
who's listening that didn'tlisten last week or the week
after.
You know, not everybody hearseverything or sees everything,
and you may not know that I amhaving a birthday celebration to
celebrate my fifth year ofpodcasting.
It is happening on the 3rd ofApril.
It is happening in my homecounty of Northamptonshire and
currently tickets are availableand there is an early bird offer

(01:24):
, so you can grab the tickets atan absolute bargain price,
especially for what we're goingto get for the day.
So I am bringing you fivespecial guests.
So last week I announced NicolaTonsaga is coming to speak with
us on that day, and today Iwanted to let you know about
another one of my speakers thatis coming, and that is the

(01:44):
wonderful Janine Coney.
Now, if you have been listeningto the podcast for a while, you
will have heard Janine on thepodcast.
She was here last year.
I absolutely love this lady.
I went on her podcast.
She doesn't live too far fromme either, so we have had, we've
got to meet in real life, whichis awesome, and she is going to
come and join us on the day toshare with us audience building

(02:08):
tips.
So that is one of the pillarsof this podcast is audience
building.
So she will be coming along totalk to us about audience growth
, audience building, how we doit and all the ins and outs.
So if you are interested inbuilding your audience and you
want to learn from a visibilityspecialist, then come along to
the day.
We have Nicola coming to talkto us about mindset.

(02:33):
I have four other no, threeother guest speakers to talk to
you about over the coming weeks, and then I will be also doing a
session on podcasting.
And we have these two specialcat sessions which I am eking
out.
I'm going to tell you aboutmaybe one of them.
Maybe in a couple of weeks time, I will tell you about one of
the cat sessions that we aregoing to do.

(02:54):
We're going to be having abeautiful afternoon tea buffet
and we are going to havebirthday cake.
So what more could you want?
We have got a fantasticphotographer, becky Kerr, coming
to take photographs.
She is also another sponsor ofthe event, so I am so, so
grateful that she is also goingto be sponsoring um.

(03:16):
She will be there on the day totake photos, so make sure that
you uh, put your lippy on, uh,give your hair a good brush
whatever you need to do to getcamera ready and she will take
some fantastic shots during theday.
I know that you will be able tosee on social media after the
event and be able to share withyour audience.

(03:38):
So it's going to be a fantasticevent.
It's going to be a lot oflearning, a lot of note-taking,
a lot of fun.
We're going to have twonetworking sessions, so we're
going to get to know each otherreally, really well.
It is an exclusive group ofpeople, so it's a limited number
of tickets available.
I would love to sell out sothat we have got as many people

(04:00):
there as possible, but it it'ssuch a nice, uh intimate space
that we can only fit a certainamount in.
So I'm really excited to havejust just under 100 ladies with
me on that day and giving usthat time to really get to know
each other.
So come along and join me forthat.
Then it's wwwdonnadeedcomforward slash birthday event and

(04:24):
if you go to that link, or ifyou just go to donnaeedcom, it
is a link on top of my websiteright now.
So go and grab your early birdticket if you haven't yet.
They are limited, so oncethey're gone, they're gone, and
I hope to see you in April inperson so I can give you a hug
and say thank you for listeningto the show.
Right, let's get on withtoday's episode.

(04:46):
So when we are talking about aname for your podcast, you might
be thinking what's in a name.
A rose by any other name wouldsmell as sweet.
However, it is really importantto have a strong name for your
podcast because it is the firstimpression that your listeners
have.
You'll know, if you've been along time listener, that this

(05:07):
podcast has had a couple ofnames, and that is because the
audience changed and alsobecause I'm not going to lie.
I did not set my podcast upright in the beginning because I
didn't know.
I didn't know what I didn'tknow.
There was nobody to help me,there wasn't anybody doing

(05:31):
courses and programs like what Idid, except for you know very
big name in the industry and andthe course was just way out of
my realms at that time.
I couldn't justify the cost ofit because I had bought another
big program at that time.
So it was just like I'm justgoing to have to wing and a
prayer it.
And I didn't.
I didn't do my due diligenceand the name I thought was a

(05:53):
clever name.
It was my company name, it wasnice and easy, but unfortunately
that led people to think thatit was a members only podcast.
So then I had to change it andthen the audience changed
because that business didn'twork out.
So I changed the name of thepodcast again and I've sat there

(06:13):
and I've thought about it overthe years and will I change it
again?
I don't think I will, justbecause I think that I'm quite
settled in where it is now andwhat it does.
So, mindset and action abusiness podcast that is what my
podcast is called and I thinkit is very accurate to what we
do here.
We talk about mindset, we talkabout taking action in terms of

(06:36):
that kind of back end systems ofyour business and, with you
know, amplifying your voice, building your audience.
Those are the things we talkabout.
So that is how my podcast namesort of came about and evolved.
But for you, I don't want youto make that same mistake I did
in naming the podcastincorrectly in the first place.

(06:58):
So it's really important toreally have a session where you
sit down and you really thinkabout this.
So we're going to go throughall of the things that we want
to address and think about whenwe're choosing a name.
But I do have a free brainstormto help you.
So it's a guided brainstorm tohelp you come up with your
podcast idea.
We'll talk about some of thestuff that we've got in here.

(07:20):
I'll probably mention a fewthings that aren't in that
brainstorm, because I did it awhile back.
I should probably go and updateit, but it will definitely help
you to put pen to paper andstart brainstorming a name.
So if you go to donnaeedcom, forward slash what name or one
word donnaeedcom forward, slashwhat name.
You'll be able to download thatfree brainstorm.

(07:44):
So why your name matters?
Your name, the name of yourpodcast, is part of the brand of
your podcast.
So it's very important that itevokes the right feeling and the
right message to your audienceso that you attract the right
people to it.
So when you're looking at yourpodcast, you can either do it

(08:05):
one of two ways.
You can either have it that itis connected to your business
and your business brand, so thecolours follow through, the
fonts follow through and it'sjust an extension of your
business, or you might want tohave it as a separate,
standalone brand that isrecognisable and then you filter

(08:25):
people into your business inanother way.
So for me it is.
It's connected.
So if you go to my website, youwill see the colours on my
website match the colours of mypodcast graphic.
Although I don't have, you knowit's not strong on the colour
on the podcast graphic, so Ikeep it all together so that the

(08:45):
branding is the same.
Obviously, the name is differentbecause I wouldn't call podcast
Donna Ede the Donna Ede show.
I wouldn't do that because I'ma relative nobody.
And so who's going to want tolisten to me?
So don't use your name unlessyou are Jasmine Starr or Joe
Rogan or any of those huge namesthat can get away with it,

(09:08):
because they already have amassive audience.
So if you've got hundreds ofthousands of people following
you all over social media, byall means use your name if
that's what you want to do.
But I would steer clear of itif you are not a huge name,
because people will be attractedto the name when it's a big
celebrity type name.
But if you are somebody who isnot well known, then new

(09:32):
audience members are.
They're not going to know whatthe podcast is.
They're not going to know whoyou are, what you're about, what
it is that they're going toexpect.
So your podcast name reallyneeds to reflect what it is that
the listener is going to getwhen they listen to the podcast.
So that is the first thing, andthen also it's really important
to consider seo in your podcasttitle.

(09:55):
So this is something I talkedabout with jules White and we
did a podcast audit.
She did a little podcast SEOaudit of my podcast and she
pointed out that my podcast namebeing Mindset and Action, which
is what I had as my name, doesn't really cover it and the

(10:17):
tagline really cover it.
And the tagline a businesspodcast to grow and streamline
your business that cameafterwards.
It's not in my name.
So when it comes to SEO andsearchability, if somebody puts
in business podcast, my podcastwouldn't have come up because
mindset and action doesn't sayanything about business.
So I did add that first part ofthe tagline a business podcast

(10:37):
into my name on my host so thatthere would be that connection
on SEO.
So you do have to think aboutthat, because podcasts aren't
run by like social mediaalgorithms.
It's not the more somebodylistens to you, the more you're
going to show up.
It's not that you know you'renot fighting with those

(10:57):
algorithms that are completelyunknown to you, the more you're
going to show up.
It's not that you know you'renot fighting with those
algorithms that are completelyunknown to you.
It's SEO based.
So you need to have any textwithin your podcast name with
your podcast titles and thingslike that.
They need to be optimized forSEO.
So if you don't understand SEO,I would highly recommend doing
a short course in SEO.

(11:18):
Definitely reach out to Jules.
I leave her links down below.
She has some fantastic podcast, specific SEO stuff that she
does.
So go over and check her out.
But SEO is really important.
So when you're considering yourname, think about the SEO
impact that will have.
Does it say what it says on thetin?
Is it something people willsearch for?

(11:39):
So a good name also is easierto share and remember.
So if you make it somethingthat is memorable, easy to spell
, don't, you know, don't make it.
Don't make it so that it's it'sa weird spelling of something
because it looks good.
That is not going to help you.
You need to make sure that itis something that people could

(12:03):
type in to Google and would typeinto Google to be able to help
with that discoverability.
So let's talk about things thatyou should avoid when naming
your podcast.
Try to avoid being too vague.
So calling your podcastsomething like the talk show and
that doesn't say anything aboutwhat you're talking about.

(12:26):
Okay, so I'm going to listen tosome people talking, but I've
got no idea on the topic.
So don't leave it vague.
And that's again why I had toadd in that a business podcast
to mindset and action, becausemindset and action that could be
quite vague.
That could be that could relateto the health industry.
You know you've got to get yourmindset sorted before you can
make body changes and thenyou've got to take action if you

(12:48):
want to see change in your body.
So that could well beappropriate for a health and
wellness podcast as well as abusiness podcast podcast, and it
could probably fall into othercategories as well.
So make sure that you aren'tbeing too vague or generic in
your title.
Don't use complicated words.
Again, think of the spelling.

(13:09):
Is it something that iscomplicated to spell?
Try not to use long wordseither I'll come back to that in
a second and don't use insidejokes.
So if you've got like anickname or something within
your audience, you know, don'tuse that because that's going to
be an absolute nothing toanybody else.

(13:29):
When it comes to the length ofthe words, you've got to think
about your podcast graphic.
Your podcast graphic is tinywhenever it is seen.
I think Apple asks it to be 600by 600 pixels.
And when you think about thatas a size, it's small.
And then when you see, if yougo onto any of your podcasting

(13:50):
apps and look at the size of thegraphics on there, they tend to
be pretty small until you clickinto the podcast and then it
might get a little bit biggerand be more readable.
But you want it to be reallyobvious what your podcast name
is on that graphic when it is atthe really small size, because

(14:10):
that's where most people aregoing to see it.
So you want it to be readable.
And if the word's too long, ittakes up too much space and you
have to then make it smaller.
And if it's smaller it's hardto read.
So have something that you cancreate at a larger level.
So for mine, mindset and actionI put it over two lines.
It allows me to make that quitebig so anybody can read that on

(14:35):
the smaller graphic.
Okay, so think about that.
Think about making it short, sharp and snappy, something that
you can really blow up big onthat tiny, tiny graphic so that
people can read it.
Again, you know, don't use yourname for the reasons that we've
said.

(14:55):
Don't make it too long becauseit can be hard to remember.
So for me it's Mindset in Action.
That's easy for people toremember.
It is Mindset in Action, abusiness podcast.
That is the full title of thepodcast, but I never finish the
title because it's too long.
So I use it for the SEOpurposes, but I don't use it

(15:17):
when I'm talking about itgenerally.
So when people tell people mineis mindset and action.
Now, another mistake that I madeand this was obviously a couple
of years into my podcast iswhen I created it as mindset and
action, I used the ampersand tofor the and, because I really
like the ampersand, and thatgoes back to my very first

(15:40):
photography business and thedesigner that I had.
Do that.
Shout out to James.
He created my very firstbusiness logo for my photography
business.
He is the pink octopus graphicdesigner and it had an ampersand
in it which really beautifullyjoined my two initials, d and E,

(16:05):
and it was really clever how hedid it and I've always loved
the ampersand.
Ever since.
Now the ampersand that I use inMindset in Action the font it
doesn't show up as a D and an E.
It looks more like that figureof eight, so it's not the same
one, but I've always loved usingit for and unfortunately that

(16:25):
means that when somebody typesin mindset and the word and and
then action, my podcast doesn'talways come up because they
haven't used the ampersand.
So that is a problem.
Um, I could, I suppose, changeit, but it does upset me a
little bit.
So don't use symbols and don'tuse anything that's too

(16:51):
complicated too long.
Don't ignore SEO, because it isa really popular way of people
finding and searching for you.
You've got to think of thedirectories as if they are
search engines, and that is whatpeople will do.
They will go onto their podcastapp, they'll decide what they
want to listen to.
They will go and they will lookat what podcast can I listen to

(17:16):
that talks about XYZ, and theywill type that in the XYZ and
that will bring up podcastepisodes.
So if your podcast is in themix with that SEO title, then
you're going to get pushedforward.
So really important.
And then something else that isreally really important to
consider is like trademarkingand copyright issues issues.

(17:45):
Please, please, please, checkyour name with trading standards
.
Trademark whoever you need togo to for registered trademarks
and copyright, because if youuse somebody's name that is
already trademarked, you couldget in trouble.
Now do?
I suggest you trademarking yourown name.
I don't think there's much tosay about it, in all honesty, in
terms of being for it, and thatis just because of the way that

(18:07):
trademarks work.
So for those of you who don'tknow and you know I'm not a
trademark expert by all means goand do your own research.
Talk to an expert about itbefore you decide.
But trademarks have to beregistered in all the countries
that you want to to have thattrademark in.
And there's been a big, bigissue with Uggs on this.

(18:31):
Fact is that the Ugg boot wasmade by a company in Australia.
They created Uggs since 1974 orsomething was their brand name.
They've got the brand name inAustralia, but another company
in America saw it, took it over, created their own Uggs and then

(18:54):
sold them and got the trademarkin every other country.
And now there's a big battlegoing on between the you know,
the longest time creator of theboot and the one that has the
most um trademarks around theworld.
So the Australian company hashad to change it um so that they

(19:16):
now don't use the word UGG um,but they were the first ones to
to create it it and that isupsetting.
So you have to think about it.
And the thing is with trademarksis if you get a trademark then
you have to fiercely defend thattrademark.
So if you find somebody else isusing it, you have to approach
them and tell them they can'tuse it because you've

(19:37):
trademarked it or else it makesa mockery of the whole system.
So that can lead to you havingto write letters that you don't
really want to write to peopleto sort of tell them that they
can't use your name.
So there is a lot of issuesthere.
I would say make sure that it'snot trademarked by anybody else
before you use it for yourpodcast and then you know you

(19:59):
don't.
You can trademark it or don'ttrademark it.
The issue with not trademarkingit is that somebody else could
come along, make a podcast ofthe same name and trademark it
and then ask you to change yourname, or you trademark it and
then somebody else comes along, uses it and you have to chase
them down to get them to changeit.
So it's like half of one, sixof the other.

(20:22):
You know it's that kind ofissue.
So I haven't got minetrademarked.
Please don't go and createanother podcast with my name now
, because I've said that, but Idon't own the trademark to that
because it can be expensive and,you know, making sure that
people don't then go after thatcan also be expensive if you've

(20:43):
got to tell them, send them acease and desist letter and
things like that.
So it can get complicated, butmake sure that it's not
trademarked by anybody elsebefore you use it.
So then, on some things that youshould definitely do, you know,
make it clear and relevant toyour audience, those people that
you want to listen.

(21:04):
You know what is going toattract them.
Do some research, do somemarketing, test marketing around
it.
Like, talk to your audience.
One of the things that I teachpeople in my launch ready
strategy is to actually get youraudience's input on the name.
So maybe come up with, you know, five or six names that you

(21:25):
like and think are okay.
Run them through that Don'tlisten.
You know, make sure that you'renot infringing on anybody's
trademarks, make sure that it'sSEO appropriate, et cetera, et
cetera, and then put it out toyour audience, like I'm looking
at starting a podcast.
These are the names that I'mlooking at.
Vote for your favourite and getthat input, and that can really

(21:45):
help to open your eyes to whatmight be best for you in terms
of your name and it also helpswith the promotion of your
podcast.
And I go into that a lot morein my launch ready strategy,
which is available on my websiteIf you wanted to go and take a
look.
That will help you to reallypower through and get your

(22:06):
audience building before yourpodcast is even launched.
So consider those keywords, aswe were talking about.
What is it that people aregoing to be searching for?
Use that in intel that you getfrom people voting as to what
makes more sense for them.
You'll have to give them ashort description of what the
podcast is going to be about sothey can make the appropriate

(22:27):
choice.
Keep it short, keep itmemorable.
You know two to four wordsmindset and action three words
right there in the middle.
You know.
Make sure that it is short, sharp and easy to remember.
Make sure that it is notalready a podcast.
Like I say, it's not just thetrademarks you need to look out
for, but search the podcastplatforms and see if the podcast
of that name exists, becausejust because it hasn't got the

(22:50):
trademark, then you're good togo, great.
But if there's another podcastthat is using that name, even if
they've not trademarked it.
You don't want to be competingand getting confused audiences,
so you want to make sure thatthe podcast name isn't being
used so that you can get yourclean audience and you haven't
got people that are coming overfrom theirs thinking you're

(23:10):
their podcast or people that youwant on your listening to yours
, going to their podcast, especially if they're two
different things, like I said, mindset and action.
That could be two verydifferent things, could be more
than that, and you don't wantpeople going on to that other
podcast thinking that it's yoursand then getting the
information that you're notactually putting out there.

(23:31):
Say it out loud is it easy tosay and pronounce because you
are likely to be saying it a lot, so it needs to really roll off
the tongue, nice and easy foryou.
One of the things that I havenoticed is that when I put my
podcast transcript out or whenthe AI does the transcript for

(23:53):
me, it will often put mindset inaction and I don't think I
sound like I'm saying in, butwhen I say mindset and action an
action, it's my accent theyhear the N sound of the and and
they think that I've said in.
So make sure that you aresounding, pronouncing it

(24:15):
correctly and that it is easyfor you to say, because
otherwise you're going to getpeople thinking that it's called
something that it's not,because otherwise you're going
to get people thinking that it'scalled something that it's not.
And then, yeah, like I say, test it with your audience
friends, get feedback on it andmake sure that it is hitting
right with the audience that youwant to aim it at.
So key points are really toavoid it being vague or long,

(24:37):
hard to spell.
Choose something that is clear, catchy and searchable.
Don't forget you can grab myfree brainstorm guided
brainstorm worksheet so that youcan go through that, tick all
the boxes and get a name chosen.
You can get that at donnaeedcom.
Forward slash what name, go andgrab that.

(25:00):
And yeah, if you are thinking ofpodcasting, you want to start a
podcast, then I do have myeight week program, which you
can join at any time.
I do have a DIY version comingout towards the end of this
month, so do keep your eyes openfor that.

on the wait list or you want tojoin the eight week group

(25:23):
program.
And yeah, that is it for today.
I just want to again justremind you to go and grab your
ticket for the event.
It is DonnaEcom forward slashbirthday event.
All of the links will be downbelow for you, so go ahead and
click those links.

(25:43):
there, my guests would love tosee you there, and I will see
you next week with a guest.
We're having a guest on theshow next week, so I will see
you then.
