Now let's jump into the episode.
So this week I wanted to do aquick conversation with you
about what it is to set a goal, and that is because we are now

(02:12):
in the third week of January andthis is usually the time where
New Year's resolutions go outthe window.
So many people on the 1st ofJanuary decide to set their
business goals or set theirpersonal goals and set these
resolutions that they are goingto be this way, that way, the
other way.
This year, you know, I'm notgoing to eat any chocolate.

(02:32):
This year, I am going to behealthy.
This year, I am going toexercise three times a week.
This year, I am going to, youknow, grow my business and
double my income this year Allof these goals that we set
ourselves at the beginning ofthe year that when we get to
December and we look back overthe year, we go what were my
goals again?

(02:52):
Or what was that resolution Iset in January?
Because usually it's so far inthe past that you can't even
remember what it was.
And this happens a lot.
And I think a lot of times weset ourselves up for failure
when it comes to these goalsetting sessions.
And that is why I was sodelighted to have a very special
guest come to the BusinessWomen Unlimited networking

(03:15):
meeting that I run for DebbieGilbert online.
This week I had Jenny Donatocome and talk to us about
motivation and how we canactually make sure that we are
setting goals that we are goingto achieve and that we are going
to be able to continue to worktowards for the rest of the year

(03:36):
rather than failing, becauseshe actually came on the day
that most people have given uptheir resolutions.
21st of January is like theD-Day for resolutions, having
gone out the window.
So if you're somebody who hasset goals and you're sitting
here listening to this thinking,oh gosh, that's already me,
I've already failed at my NewYear's resolutions.

(03:57):
I already forgot what mybusiness goals were.
It was three weeks ago.
I've been asleep since then,donna.
Then this is the episode foryou, my friend.
Let's jump in to it.
So one of the things that Jennysuggested was that we actually
scrap New Year's resolutionsaltogether, and I couldn't agree
more with this one.

(04:17):
I think it is really hard to seta New Year's resolution in the
traditional sense of the wordand actually be successful at it
, because oftentimes, when weset a New Year's resolution, we
are starting at the end.
You know, we're sayingsomething like I want to lose
weight or I want to be fit thisyear, and we jump to exactly

(04:41):
where we would want to be by theend of the year.
So exercising three times aweek, not eating a scrap of
rubbish, you know, always eatingthe good stuff, never making
the wrong choices, and we dothat for so long, and it's such
a jolt to the system that thesystem almost has a breakdown
and is like oh my God, what areyou doing to me?
And then your body just goesand by week three, your body

(05:04):
said, said no, this is not goingto happen, rather than doing
what we need to do, which issaying by the end of the year,
this is where I want to be, andthen making those changes across
the year that are going to helpus get there.
So if health and wellness isyour goal for the year, then how
do get there?

(05:24):
What are the changes that youneed to make and focus on
different things each month toget you to that point.
So by the end of the year, you're in a position where
you've made some really lastinghabit changes.
That means going into next year, you're going to be that fitter
, healthier version of yourselfthat you want to be, and that's

(05:45):
the problem is.
We can't make these changesovernight, as much as we would
like to snap our fingers and bedifferent, and there are very,
very few people that can do that.
But generally speaking, we arecreatures of habit and habits
are so, so hard to break.
Trust me, I know this one.
So I am a very habitual person, routine led, and when it comes

(06:09):
to health and wellness stuff forexample, my lunches I could eat
the same thing for lunch everysingle day.
Doesn't bother me and I willjust continue to eat that.
So if I work out that this iswhat I'm going to eat to be
healthy, then I will have thatevery single day.
I won't deviate from it becauseit's too much hassle, it's too
much hard work, it's too much,it's just too much to do it.

(06:31):
So I will have the same thingevery single day and it doesn't
bother me.
But for other people that wouldbe like a nightmare.
But those are the things thatyou're trying to break.
So for me, then, to change it upand have something different, I
am always resetting to mydefault.
It's really really hard to getaway from it.

(06:52):
Something as easy as having acouple of slices of toast for my
lunch is quick and easy, whereas you know, defrosting
some homemade soup or you knowmaking something from scratch is
effort that I haven't got timefor.
So when I am busy, it is so, soeasy to default to the toast

(07:12):
because it's quick, easy andit's ground in habit that is
easy for me to fall into.
So this is what we are battlingagainst.
We are battling against thesealmost.
It's almost like it's threadedinto your DNA that this is what
we are battling against.
We are battling against thesealmost.
It's almost like it's threadedinto your DNA that this is who
you are and what you do andyou're trying to change that.
It is not easy and it takespractice and it takes effort and

(07:37):
you've got to keep resettingbecause you will fall back into
old habits.
You will want to go back tothose old patterns.
It will naturally occur andyou'll slip up, but you need to
be able to do.
You know when people turnaround and say when you fall off
the wagon, you don't have towait till Monday to get back on

(07:58):
it.
That's the thing.
So when we're looking at ourbusinesses, it is so easy to
default to all of the thingsthat we normally do.
So I'm checking my emails, I'mposting on social, I'm making
this podcast.
Those are habitual things in mybusiness that I do.
So when I am busy, it is easyto default to those things

(08:20):
rather than sitting there andthinking okay, what are my goals
this year?
What am I looking to do?
So, for example, I'm doing thislive event in April.
There are a lot of things thatI need to consider that I have
never had to consider in mybusiness because I've never run
a live event before, which isall the more reason why you need
to go and grab your ticket andcome and support me, because I

(08:41):
need my friends there, so comeand support me and cheer me on,
because it is going to be.
It's going to be fantastic, butit is one of those things that
is just not something that I doall the time.
So, therefore, those habitsaren't there and if I'm not
careful, it would be really easyto forget things in terms of

(09:03):
what I need for that event, because I'm in my habitual state
of like I'm busy, I'm justgoing to get done, I just need
to get this done today and thenI'm done, rather than thinking
what are my goal targets that Ineed to hit?
So Jenny was talking to us atthe meeting about our word of
the year and using that ratherthan goal setting.

(09:23):
So, rather than saying, I wantto hit this many clients this
year, I want to hit this revenue, I want to go to this event, go
to that event or any of thosekind of goals that you might set
for yourself, instead, lookingat the overarching theme of your
year, what do you want youryear to be?

(09:44):
And for me, my word of the yearwas balance.
What does your word of the yearlook like in tangible terms?
So what tangible things can youwrite down to say that if I was
to achieve this by the end ofthe year, then I'll be able to
look back and say my year waswhatever your word of the year

(10:05):
is balanced for me and that wasa really good little task to do.
And then she talked aboutbreaking those events, those
targets, those tangible thingsdown into monthly milestones
that you need to do.

(10:25):
So if you want balance in yourwork life, what is one of the
things that you need to do there?
So I want to be able to haveFriday as my free day, so that I
don't necessarily do businesswork on that day and I don't do
any other kind of work on thatday.
So really, the way I splitFridays is I split it in half In

(10:48):
the morning.
If I've got stuff that Idesperately need to do, that's
time critical, then I will do itthen.
If I don't, then I claim thatback and have it with the rest
of the day as my own day.
So what is a way that I can dothis, a tangible thing that I
can do to help me bring thatpart of my balance into my life?
I can go in my calendar and Ican block Fridays out right now

(11:10):
as busy and then nobody is goingto be able to book anything on
a Friday, which means that Iwill not have any calls on a
Friday this year, which isalready miles ahead of where I
was last year, where I wouldlike look at my week, think, oh,
it's all really quite busy.
Oh, I'll just stick it in onFriday morning, when that's not

(11:32):
what Friday mornings were for.
So that is a really importantthing to kind of do is to
actually put the steps in placeto make those things happen.
So by doing that, I will haveFridays free.
So something else that I'mlooking to do as part of my
balance forming is to be out ofthe office by 6pm.
Now I can already tell you thatI am failing that right now.

(11:53):
As I'm recording this becauseit is late and I am not, I am
not out of the office.
It's 5.30.
I wanted to be out of theoffice by 6.
I have got to edit this and putit up before I can leave the
office.
So I know I'm not going to beout of the office by 6 o'clock
tonight.
However, that is not my goalright now.
It's my goal by the end of theyear to not be in the office at

(12:18):
6pm at night.
So this is something that I'vegot to work at.
I've got to create space in mydiary, which I have done this
week.
It was only this week that Istarted to change my work hours
around a little bit to give mesome extra time to hopefully
help with that.
So that's going to be somethingthat we see coming to fruition

(12:41):
over the next few weeks,hopefully.
So what is it for you?
What are those tangible thingsthat you need to do to help you
attain your word of the year?
And write them down and startputting those in your diary as
action steps to take.
Another thing that you mightwant to do when it comes to

(13:02):
setting your goals andintentions for the year is to
create a vision board.
Now, I did a vision board lastyear and it was actually quite
magical that, as soon as an,it's almost like you put all
these things on the vision board, but it's not necessarily that
you want all of those thingsenough to make it happen.

(13:25):
So you've got to want it enoughto make it happen.
There were words of affirmationthat I put on there.
There were little quotes that Iput on there, so one of them
was what is for me will come tome and that I am enough, just as
I am.
And romance, the day wasanother one, which is something

(13:45):
that I want to bring in thisyear as well.
So I didn't do enough of itlast year, but when I did it was
magic.
So these little things, but ofeverything that I put on the
vision board, two things reallystood out to me was my trip to
Paris that I wanted to do, andvisiting London, being in London

(14:07):
more, because I really enjoygoing to London for the things
that I have gone to London for.
So I wanted to do those twothings.
And if you have been listeningfor any length of time, if you
were listening last year, youwill know that I went to Paris
in June last year for mybirthday.
So I made it happen.
It was almost instantly after Ifinished my vision board that

(14:28):
it was within a couple of weeksthat I actually booked Paris.
So it was like I put it on myvision board I wanted to make it
happen.
I knew that if I didn't justbook it it wouldn't happen.
So we booked it.
It was magical and I loved thefact that that happened.
And then London I did a trip toLondon with my mum and my sister

(14:50):
to go to Kensington Palace.
So I did that trip with them.
I got the new part-time rolethat I now do as well as my
business, and that part-timerole involves me being in London
quite a bit.
So I was in London um, I thinkit was four time for four days

(15:13):
in December.
We went on the 6th of December,I was there on the 16th and the
17th of December.
I was there on the 16th and the17th of December and it might
have been another day as wellthat I was down there in
December.
Then I was there in September.
I went to an event in London inJune or July I think it was in

(15:34):
summertime, so I went down then.
So there was a lot of Londonactivity this year, both
personally and professionally,which was fantastic.
So those two things got verymuch ticked off.
Now there were other things onthere, like health related
things, and I did start workingwith a nutritionist last year.

(15:55):
So there is definitely thingsthat I can tick off that were
very much focused on andachieved, which was amazing.
So if you want to create avision board to help you
visualize these tangible goalsthat you're writing down to help
you achieve your word of theyear.
Then I am going to send you tothe show notes.
Go to the show notes and I willhave linked there for you my

(16:20):
episode with Vanessa Buck.
Vanessa Buck is the visionboarding queen.
She absolutely loves the powerof vision boards and she shares
it with everybody.
So if you want to learn visionboarding, she is the lady to go
to.
I will link her episode in theshow notes for you.
You can go over there.
You'll find the links in theshow notes of that episode to go

(16:43):
and connect with Vanessa.
So make sure you do that.
Vision boards are very, verypowerful.
So that is another great way ofbringing your thoughts, ideas,
beliefs to your mind.
And that is a powerful thing.
Because this was another thingthat Jenny said at the meeting

(17:05):
and I was so, so grateful forher saying it, because it was so
important and that's why I wantto repeat it to you guys is she
said that your brain is verypowerful, and we all know this.
If there's something that we'vebeen learning as a sort of a
species over the last sort ofdecade or so, is how powerful

(17:30):
the brain is, and one of thethings she said was that if you
ask your brain a question youask your brain a question your
brain will go and find theanswers and it will go and find
evidence to say that what you'resaying is true.

(17:51):
So if you make a statement oryou ask a question, your brain
will go and find the answers andthe evidence to support it.
So, for example, if you turnaround and say to your brain
gosh, you are so fat and lazy, your brain will go and find

(18:12):
evidence of that.
You didn't go out for your walktoday.
You didn't drink the water thatyou said you were going to do.
You couldn't be bothered to goto your parents house when you
said that you were going to go.
You couldn't be bothered tomake your dinner, which isn't
going to help you.
Like all of these things, yourbrain is going to bring to your

(18:33):
mind as negative reinforcementsthat what you said is absolutely
true, whereas those thingsmight be true, that those you
did those things, you might nothave gone to your parents
because you just did an eighthour day and you were exhausted
because you had to use a lot ofbrain power to work out

(18:53):
something complicated at work orin your business.
You may not have gone for yourwalk because you were in that
eight hour day.
You just didn't have a momentto stop and you got so
distracted by what you weredoing or you were so engrossed
in what you were doing youdidn't know the time.
You might not have cookedyourself a dinner because you

(19:13):
were tired.
But your brain is not going toshow you the logic of that, it's
just going to show you theevidence that you're right.
So if you want your goals to becoming true, you can't be
negative with yourself.
You have got to look at thepositives.

(19:34):
So you know, ask yourselfdifferent questions.
Ask yourself the differentquestions.
What did I do today to help theme of tomorrow?
Well, you got up on time, andyou don't normally do that.

(19:54):
You went to bed on time and yougot a good night's sleep.
You managed to get a quick walkin between calls earlier.
You know these are all thingsthat you know.
Your negative brain might turnaround and say you didn't do
enough, but your positive brainwill tell you that you are

(20:15):
making these incremental changes.
So that's another thing tothink about when you are looking
at your goals, your vision forthe year and just how you're
talking to yourself, because itmakes a huge difference.
So that is it for today.
I really wanted to just bringyou this session this week

(20:36):
because we all know that.
You know it was Blue Mondaythis week and I want to sort of
address that as well.
And it does tend to be a weekin the month of January where it
all starts to go a little bitwrong.
We had all the good intentionson January the 1st and then all

(21:01):
of a sudden, by the third weekin January, those intentions
have gone out the window.
And there is a very good reasonfor this, I think, and that is
because we start our new year inthe middle of winter and I
think it's silly and I wish wecould change it, but
unfortunately January the 1st isnot going to change.

(21:21):
It's always going to be Januarythe 1st and nobody is going to
do what I would like them to do,which is change the new year to
March the 1st.
So in the Western calendar, newYear's Day is January the 1st
and that is what it's going tobe, and unfortunately we are all
programmed, almost like in ourDNA, that that is the start of

(21:45):
the new year and that is when weneed to make these changes and
because of that we put thisadded pressure on ourselves.
And it's just, it's the wrongtime of year to do it, because
we are mammals and a lot ofmammals hibernate for the winter
, but we don't.
We don't.
We have to live through it.

(22:05):
And we're awake, but we'rereally tired and we're pretty
lethargic, especially afterChristmas and all of that good
stuff.
We are cold, we just want to bewarm and we're a bit sluggish
and it's just not the best timeto make all of these really big
changes.
And I feel like, if we're goingto make these changes, doing it

(22:30):
Jenny's way, where she's sortof saying look, where do you
want to be at the end of theyear and let's start working
towards that, rather than weneed to be this right now and
then we've got to hold fast andkeep it going until the end of
the year, is a gentler way ofgetting to where we want to be
and it is also something thatyou know is bred into us by

(22:54):
marketeers.
So Blue Monday was somethinginvented by the travel industry.
No offense to my travel agentfriends Absolutely love you guys
, but it was a term coined bythe travel agency world to get
you to book summer holidays.
Oh, you're feeling blue thisMonday.
Book your holiday and you'llfeel better.
And so it's a marketeer's day.

(23:16):
It's not actually apsychologically proved day where
people are more sad than anyother.
It was a marketing day.
It was something that I saw onMartin Lewis's Twitter, I think
that he put out saying don'tgive them the credit for it,
because they are, because a lotof people are looking at it as

(23:39):
this sort of mental health daywhen it's not.
It's a marketing day.
So you do have to take care ofyour mental health.
This is a especially vulnerabletime for people who struggle
with their mental health.
I will put my hands up and sayit has not been the best of
times for me these last fewweeks.
I feel like I am very, veryslow coming back into the new

(24:02):
year.
I had a lovely Christmas breakand I just I'm just struggling
to get myself moving this year.
So it's all been a very slowcomeback and I'm trying to be
gentle with myself.
And it's not because of BlueMonday, it's because it's
January.
It's been grey for weeks.

(24:22):
I can't remember the last timeI got to see the sun, and it's
just a real big struggle for mepersonally.
So if you are somebody who isstruggling like that, or if
you're not struggling like that,I would love to hear from you.
I would love to hear where youare with this time of year and
how you feel about it, becausemy feeling is we should start

(24:44):
our new year in March and thatwould be much better, which is
why I kind of go with myfinancial year April to April.
So March is the time where Ikind of treat it as my December,
where I'm doing all of the okay, what are my goals for the year
?
What am I going to do?
What do I want to achieve?
What can I start putting inplace?
Because then that leads me intoApril, which is the beginning

(25:07):
of my financial year.
So that works better for me.
But I would love to know fromyou how you guys work, how you
find this time of year.
If you struggle with it, whatdo you do to help?
I would love any tips and youknow, if I get some, I might
share them in another episode.
But if you are all good andgroovy, ready, rocking and
rolling, I would love to knowwhat you're up to.

(25:28):
What are your goals for theyear?
What are you working towards?
What are your goals for theyear?
What are you working towards?
So that is it for today'sepisode.
Thank you so much for joiningme.
Come and join me over in thefacebook group and let me know
all those details.
Don't forget to go and grabyour ticket for the event.
