You can run around here naked as a thereand not worry about running into anybody.
This is Roman.
What a guess.
This is his family.

(00:25):
I'm waiting for the hitsto rotate around and vomit.
Peach Soup.
They're about to spend one weektogether in the great outdoors.
We weren't invited.
Ah, that'll be tickled todeath to see us who invited him
anyway, but this is no holiday.
The man is an, this is war.

(01:01):
You wouldn't know a good time ifit fell out of the sky, landed on
your face and started a wiggle.
Are you gonna argue or areyou gonna enjoy yourself?
Dan Royd,
John Candy, the great outdoors, outdoor fun for the whole family

(01:24):
that had to hurt.

Katie (01:46):

you lovely listeners to returningguest Jared Stein from the Hyperspace
Podcasting in the 25th century.
Jared, thank you for comingback to join me for season two

Jared (02:20):
Well, Katie, thank you for having me.
It's a pleasure to be hereand I can't wait to talk about
the great outdoors.

Katie (02:28):
Indeed.
Tell us what's going on, what's newin, in your world of podcasting.

Jared (02:33):
Well, the hyperspace me and the guys have kind of struggled to
get it together since since December.
I think the last episode we put out wassort of like this, this Christmas episode.
And um, uh, we do also do sort ofreaction and review shows whenever Disney
Plus puts out a new Star Wars TV show.

(02:55):
And we put out one ofthose earlier this year.
So we've done a series of episodeson the latest Star Wars TV series.
but.
For the past probably six weeks orso, it's been pretty quiet at the
Hyperspace studios, but always,we're always talking about, cranking
it up again and starting to do it.
But, sometimes life happensand, and things get in the way,

(03:20):
but it's not going anywhere.
We're certainly going to becontinuing to do episodes,
well into the future.

Katie (03:27):
Glad to hear it.
I mean, you gotta continue onuntil at least the 25th century.

Jared (03:32):
century, I

Katie (03:33):
Yeah.

Jared (03:33):
I

Katie (03:34):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (03:35):
that's non-negotiable,

Katie (03:36):
Right.
Well, I had inquired inthe Breakfast Club episode.
I, my school did not have Saturdaydetention, and neither did Ryan, my guest
Ryan's, we had afterschool detentionand I was like, is this a thing?
Is there detentions on Saturdays?
Did your school havedetention on Saturdays?

(03:58):
Jared.

Jared (03:58):
No, not, not that I, I, I never had to go to detention.
I was a nerdy good kid.
So, it, but it was mostly after schoolor, in school suspension they called it.
Or you had to come to school on a school
day and set in detention.

Katie (04:15):
Which is a weird scenario.
You're like double punishing I meanlike you might as well educate the
child if they're gonna be there.

Jared (04:23):
Yeah.

Katie (04:23):
rate, my friend Kelly,
She informed me that her school didin fact have Saturday detention.
So thank you Kelly forletting the Retro Made Show.
Know that and I'd love tohear from other people.
Anyway, yeah, detention Saturday.

Jared (04:40):
Wow.
That, that's, that's a fate worsethan death for, for a school kid.
Saturdays are
sacred.

Katie (04:49):
Without further ado, should we spin the wheel for this new segment?

Jared (04:55):
to this.

Katie (04:57):
We're gonna open the time capsule.
You guys, we're going back to June of 1988
I'm gonna spin on your behalf.
Let's see what we, what we hit on.
Oh, it's a good one.
VHS Vault.

Jared (05:09):
Okay.

Katie (05:10):
Okay.
Oh, 1988.
It's a good year.

Jared (05:15):
Yep.

Katie (05:17):
Can you name the five top video rentals?
So this is not at the bigscreen video rentals of 1988.
Uh, Woman discovers love, passion, andthe art of dancing at a summer resort.
Of course,
A gritty action movie featuringa mismatched cup duo.

Jared (05:39):
tango and
cash.

Katie (05:42):
No, that was 89

Jared (05:43):
Oh, crap.

Katie (05:44):
or it came out in 89.
It was in la Battling criminals in la

Jared (05:48):
Weapon.

Katie (05:49):
Yes.
Intense psychologicalthriller about an affair.
That spirals.
Yes.
Good.
You're good.
Mm.
Let's see what, can I give youa hint that won't give it away.
It is a prohibition era.
A crime saga.

Jared (06:08):
The Untouchables.

Katie (06:09):
Yes.
Last one.
Supernatural romantic comedy.
Three women
dabbling in witchcraft.
Left.

Jared (06:23):
is it the Cher?

Katie (06:25):
Yes.

Jared (06:26):
with
Jack.
The Witches of Eastwick.

Katie (06:29):
Yes.
Very good.
Very good.
Very good.
Jared.
The hints are too easy.
I, I, I need to find harder hints, but Yeah, you did very well.

Jared (06:38):
I, you know what?
I probably would not have landed onthose had it not been for your help.

Katie (06:45):
Let's spin it again.

Jared (06:46):
okay.

Katie (06:50):
Pages of the past.

Jared (06:54):
Interesting.

Katie (06:54):
Uhhuh I'm trying to find one that's not so easy.

Jared (06:58):
Are, is this about books?

Katie (07:00):
Or magazines, like
books.
Back to the bookshelf.
Pages of the past.
Okay.
, which early young adulthorror books by RL Stein

Jared (07:12):
Goosebumps

Katie (07:13):
Very good.
Very good.
Let me do another one.
I didn't
which SATIRICAL magazine still goingstrong in 1988 continued to feature
Alfred e Newman with sharp witted humor.
I think this is, I wouldn'thave got that one, so very good.
Yeah, I wouldn't, I'm unfamiliar with it.

Jared (07:32):
Okay.
I used to to
read it on

Katie (07:35):
Okay.
All right.
Let's spin another one.
Return to tune time.

Jared (07:44):
Oh.

Katie (07:48):
Oh, there's so many.
Okay.
Which trio of high pitched musicalrodents continued their antics in 1988.

Jared (07:58):
Where are
the chipmunks coming

Katie (08:01):
and

Jared (08:02):
Stronger than ever before.

Katie (08:04):
Dang.
You're

Jared (08:04):
chipmunks.

Katie (08:05):
it.

Jared (08:06):
Alvin Simon,
Oh yeah.

Katie (08:09):
You're good.
Yeah.
Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Okay.
I will, we will do this, this one more, which Mischievous Orange Cat battled
dog catchers and rival cats in 1988.

Jared (08:22):
Is it Heathcliff

Katie (08:24):
And yes, it's Heathcliff
it know what was this?

Jared (08:29):
Well, that was the
Marma.
Duke was the dog,
but

Katie (08:33):
were right.

Jared (08:34):
okay.

Katie (08:35):
Heathcliff, but this cartoon, if you remember, it was like the
first half was Heathcliff and thenthe second half was like another group
of, they were called something else.
Do you remember, second halfwas like these ragamuffin cats.
Do you remember?

Jared (08:55):
I don't remember this.

Katie (08:56):
They were called?

Jared (08:57):
cliff, and Marma Duke.
That was the, I.
What I remember, but

Katie (09:02):
Together?

Jared (09:03):
well, they, they sort of had a, an hour, like Heathcliff had 30 and Marmaduke
had 30, but I guess they, they ditched
Marmaduke at some pointfor these other cats you're

Katie (09:12):
No, no.
It was just within theHeathcliff half hour.
It was split.

Jared (09:18):
well I don't remember this.
I'm stumped,

Katie (09:22):
It was Heathcliff and the Cadillac Cats.
Remember there was one cat that hadlike a, like a newsy boy hat on with
a cane and a scarf, and they rodein like a, like a 57 Chevy type car.

Jared (09:39):
man.
I have no memory of this.
How do you plan on getting us to the city?
Trust me.
How do we up you guys?
Ow.
Look out.
Wow.
Hey.
Oh.

(10:03):
Now what?
Now?
We need a lot of hot air to blow it up.
Yeah.
Mongo some hot air.

Katie (10:30):
Heathcliff and the Cadillac Cats, who remembers this?
Okay.
We'll spin it one more time.
We'll get another, another category.
Oh, this'll be an easy one.
Primetime.
Rewind.
Okay.
They're not very tough, these arethe top Prime time shows in 1988.

Katie-1 (10:53):
Do you have any

Jared (10:54):
Um,

Katie-1 (10:55):
With the

Jared (10:56):
yes.

Katie-1 (10:57):
Okay.

Jared (10:58):
I'm gonna say Cosby Show.
Cheers.
Family ties.

Katie-1 (11:06):
not

Jared (11:06):
Uh Oh, not family ties.

Katie-1 (11:09):
88.
I think.
Family ties.
I don't know.
I think it?

Jared (11:11):
Family Ties was still going.

Katie-1 (11:13):
it?
Okay?

Jared (11:13):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (11:14):
the top anymore,

Jared (11:15):
Dang.

Katie-1 (11:16):
but you have
Cheers Cosby Show.

Jared (11:19):
Cheers.
Cosby Show.
Man in 88.
The, A team.
I dunno.
I'm standing firm on
Cosby Show and Cheers.

Katie-1 (11:33):
Okay.
The other
ones we have the centralcharacter is brash, sarcastic,
and an unfiltered view of life.

Jared (11:43):
Brash, sarcastic, in an unfiltered view of life.

Katie-1 (11:46):
humor.
So like the touch tone for the show.
It's biting, humor and unvarnished.
Look at everyday struggles, balancing family dynamics.
If

Jared (11:59):
I,

Katie-1 (11:59):
trying

Jared (11:59):
I couldn't guess.

Katie-1 (12:01):
a little vague

Jared (12:05):
Um,

Katie-1 (12:06):
Roots.

Jared (12:07):
oh
Roseanne.

Katie-1 (12:08):
Yes.
Yes.

Jared (12:09):
Okay.

Katie-1 (12:10):
And another one is
a college-based spinofffrom a beloved sitcom.

Jared (12:14):
This was a different world.
I.

Katie-1 (12:18):
Mm.
of them is not a sitcom,it's a news program.

Jared (12:23):
Uh,
60 minutes.

Katie-1 (12:25):
60 minutes,
And the last one, one of myfavorite shows of all time, if
you listen to the show, Jared.

Jared (12:34):
In 88.

Katie-1 (12:35):
Mm-hmm.
If I give you a hint, it'll give it,
away.

Jared (12:40):
Dang it,

Katie-1 (12:42):
Let me see.
Ooh, God, any,

Jared (12:46):
hour long or 30 minute long.

Katie-1 (12:47):
minutes.
It's a sitcom.
Really great chemistry among the cast.
Super funny.

Jared (12:55):
Well,
A famous sitcom in 1988.

Katie-1 (13:00):
I'm trying to find a hint that won't give it away, but let's see.
It's women.
Four women.

Jared (13:09):
For, oh, the Golden Girls.
Oh, gosh,

Katie-1 (13:12):
The Golden Girls.

Jared (13:15):
yes.
Okay.

Katie-1 (13:17):
All right.
All right.
Well, that's enough of the time capsule,

Jared (13:22):
Well, how old were you?
How old were that's, that'sa tacky question in 88.

Katie-1 (13:27):
I was

Jared (13:28):
I'm, I'm, Wow, okay.
I was 13.
Okay.
So, gotcha.

Katie-1 (13:34):
Yeah.

Jared (13:35):
The Golden Girls at seven?

Katie-1 (13:36):
Yeah, I was watching any of these shows.
I mean, I probably also watch 'causeit's been on in syndication forever too.
So,

Jared (13:45):
Yeah, that's true.

Katie-1 (13:46):
yeah, I mean, really a lot of the stuff that I cover on
retro made, I caught it later, then it's original release.

Jared (13:55):
Gotcha.

Katie-1 (13:56):
All right.
So I'm doing a whole season

Jared (13:58):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (13:59):
John Hughes, the director, the writer.

Jared (14:03):
I mean, pretty much a quintessential eighties presence in,
in a lot of, teen, kid centered films.
He came to my I came to JohnHughes through Ferris Bueller.

Katie-1 (14:19):
Okay.

Jared (14:20):
That was that was my first exposure.
And Ferris Bueller was one ofthose that, that was, a VHS staple.
And I think I recorded it off ofHBO and just wore that VHS tape out.
I don't, I, I think I, it wasn'tuntil later, maybe into the nineties

(14:42):
when I would start to see hisname pop up and be like, oh crap.
Well, home alone.
And, and things and Christmasvacation and things like that where
I was like, oh, wow, this guy did alot more than just Ferris Bueller.
And, but, he, he is, he def he defthere's a, he has a distinct flavor,

Katie-1 (15:04):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (15:05):
Hughes.
And it's it's, it's speaks to, Ithink it speaks to Gen XA lot, sort
of, 'cause Ferris Bueller was sort ofcentral in my, my childhood and teenage
years as something to try to emulate.

(15:25):
But yeah.
But I, I don't think it was, it wasn'tuntil, later that I, I realized sort
of the impact that he had and howmuch he was actually involved with.
So, but yeah, definitely justquintessential 1980s writer.

Katie-1 (15:42):
Same.
I don't think I realized until laterthat he was kind of the mastermind
behind all of these movies that I loved.
And you're,

Jared (15:48):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (15:49):
you're spot
on.
When you say he, a certainflavor, know, that, that

Jared (15:54):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (15:55):
John Hughes
mentioning Ferris Bueller.
Is that your, is that yourfavorite John Hughes movie?

Jared (16:01):
I would've to say Ferris Bueller probably is my, my, my
favorite John Hughes, and I know thathe, he wrote and directed that one.
And but of so many of these.
He just wrote, he did not, hedidn't direct, but they, they
all sort of feel similar, likemaybe he could have directed them.

Katie-1 (16:23):
I
In some cases it
was just a matter of a time conflict.
So he

Jared (16:28):
yeah.

Katie-1 (16:28):
and then there are
Themes.
There are, he's worked with the samedirector for a handful of films.
So

Jared (16:33):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (16:34):
there's, some themes in that
way.
Well, so speaking of which, the Great Outdoors is the
movie we're discussing today,

Jared (16:41):
Yes.

Katie-1 (16:41):
it was not directed
by John Hughes.
So let's get

Jared (16:45):
Correct.

Katie-1 (16:45):
Outdoors.

Jared (16:52):
do it.

Katie-1 (16:53):
June 17th, 1988, pg.
It's in, Let's see, it's a 6.6,
which is lower than the other oneswe've covered so far on season
two, but still, still very good.

Jared (17:05):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (17:06):
Obviously written by John Hughes.
He actually, I was mentioning he hadintended to direct it, but scheduling
conflicts didn't allow for that.
And this is, he teamed up with HowardDeutsch, am I saying that right?
Is it.

Jared (17:22):
I believe so.
Yeah.
I mean, that's how I would pronounce it.

Katie-1 (17:26):
And this was the third and final film that was written by John
Hughes and directed by Howard Deutsch.
Do you know what the other two were?

Jared (17:34):
W was one of them 16 candles?

Katie-1 (17:38):
No, he, John

Jared (17:40):
No, he, he directed that,

Katie-1 (17:41):
but it's in a similar vein,
They're both teen,
teen movies.

Jared (17:49):
I think I know, but

Katie-1 (17:51):
P

Jared (17:51):
I, I could

Katie-1 (17:52):
pretty

Jared (17:52):
pretty in pink.

Katie-1 (17:53):
and then some kind of

Jared (17:55):
Okay.

Katie-1 (17:55):
And then, and then this one, which is interesting,

Jared (17:59):
Yeah, this, this seems like one of these things is not like the other.

Katie-1 (18:03):
Indeed.
This might surprise you, Jared.
I had not seen this movie before.
I'm pretty

Jared (18:09):
What?

Katie-1 (18:09):
I

Jared (18:10):
Oh, oh man.

Katie-1 (18:11):
I feel like I've
maybe seen pieces of it, butnever the whole thing through.
It maybe wasn't one that ran alot on USA or TBS or something.

Jared (18:22):
Well, this, the great outdoors for me is, is one we spoke offline
earlier about my, my buddy Alan, who's gonna come see me very soon.
Since this movie came out intheaters probably once a week
for the past, 30 something years.

(18:44):
This movie is part of our lexicon.
It's, it's in our vocabulary.
I don't think a week goes by wherewe don't mention the old 96 er,
or

Katie-1 (18:54):
Oh,
I forgot about that.

Jared (18:56):
one of the things we do all the time is there's a little exchange
between John Candy and Dan Aykroyd inthe movie where he goes, was that a shot?
No, that was the truth.
That was a shot.
That was a shot.
We, we, we quote that backand forth to each other
all the time

Katie-1 (19:15):
I love

Jared (19:16):
and, and it's, so I would say actually of all the movies, even Ferris
Bueller that I said was my favorite, theGreat Outdoors is a part of my, almost,
it's, it's up here

Katie-1 (19:28):
mm-hmm.

Jared (19:28):
In my everyday life that I will just throw things like that out.
Like when they're, the steak,whenever I eat a steak, I will say,
well, there's nothing on left onthat plate, but Fat and Grizzle,
Like they talk whenthey're eating the 96 er.
And I think that's why of, when you askedme which movie I'd like to talk about, I
picked The Great Outdoors because it's,it's just something that's, and I haven't

(19:52):
watched the movie sat down and watched it
in probably 20 years,

Katie-1 (19:56):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (19:56):
always lives here,

Katie-1 (19:58):
I love that.

Jared (19:59):
so,

Katie-1 (20:00):
I forgot about the,
that even, is it possible to consumethat amount, that amount of food?
Like the, the steak scene?

Jared (20:07):
well the, you see people on YouTube, of course, who
consume massive amounts of food.
It's like a challenge thatthese restaurants put out.
I think it's probably possible.
Whether it's remotely good for youor healthy is probably debatable.
I, I think

Katie-1 (20:28):
I don't know if it's even
debatable.

Jared (20:30):
No, no.
It's, you, you would be vomitingwithin, an hour of consuming that.
But I think you could probably be done,I, it looks like John Candy is the kind
of guy who could have put that away,

Katie-1 (20:41):
If anyone, yeah, that's true.
Because there's
competitive eaters, I

Jared (20:45):
Yes.

Katie-1 (20:46):
Yeah.

Jared (20:46):
And they're, they're

Katie-1 (20:47):
Mm-hmm.
'Jared: em in water and just hot, hot, hot, you know, and hot dogs too.
Another thing, lips and assholes, that, that's something else that every
time I see a hot dog, hey, Hey, howmany, that's lips and assholes, right?
Now, Do you?
eat hot dogs?

Jared (21:04):
Occasionally, but, but, but we get the, we get the good stuff.
We get like the I.
What the kosher ones, the,
Hebrew nationals.

Katie-1 (21:12):
yeah.

Jared (21:13):
that are made with the finest cuts of beef.

Katie-1 (21:16):
Sure.
The finest lips and

Jared (21:18):
Yes, exactly.

Katie-1 (21:20):
Okay.
I got
it.

Jared (21:21):
So, but yeah, that's again, that's something else that just pops in my head
every time I see a hot dog or something.

Katie-1 (21:29):
That is hilarious.

Jared (21:30):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (21:31):
don't recall
ever having, I'm sure I did,

Jared (21:34):
Uhhuh.

Katie-1 (21:35):
ever having eaten a hot
dog.

Jared (21:37):
Oh my gosh.
Now I know, I know that you,you are a vegetarian, correct?

Katie-1 (21:42):
actually,

Jared (21:43):
Okay.

Katie-1 (21:43):
I eat vegan hot dogs

Jared (21:46):
Oh, yeah, yeah.
I've now, I've had my share of those.
'cause my, my wife, she likes the, thevegan sausage links and, Morningstar
stuff and that kind of stuff.
But, that's, I don't know.
I don't do, do plants have lipsand assholes, because that's
kind of what it tastes like to me
when I have one of those.

Katie-1 (22:05):
Oh, well,
Depends.
They're, they're not all created
equal.
And it

Jared (22:08):
true, true.

Katie-1 (22:09):
I think the
fixins kind of make it,

Jared (22:12):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (22:13):
but actually, I do recall as a child eating corn dogs.

Jared (22:17):
Okay.

Katie-1 (22:18):
anytime a restaurant has a vegan
corn dog, I will order it because

Jared (22:22):
Yeah.
And we used to get those when my daughterwas smaller, we would get the vegan like
corn dog pups, they called them, you know?

Katie-1 (22:30):
yeah.

Jared (22:30):
just like the little bite sized corn dogs.
Yeah.
Th Now those were good.
I, I would sit down and eata plate full of those things,
but yeah.

Katie-1 (22:39):
Hot dogs, man.

Jared (22:40):
Crazy.

Katie-1 (22:41):
the, so I hadn't seen Great outdoors all the way through Jared clearly
has, even though it's been 20 years.
But for the rest of you, possible youhaven't seen it, or if it's been 20 plus
years for you, it follows Chet Ripley, played by John Candy, loving family man,

(23:01):
eager for a peaceful lakeside vacation.
His plans are upended when hisoverbearing brother-in-law, Roman Craig,
played by Dan Aykroyd, unexpectedlyarrives with his family as the two
clash over their different lifestyles.
The trip turns into a series ofcomedic disasters from water skiing
mishaps to an infamous steak eatingchallenge that we just talked about,

(23:24):
and a showdown with a baldheaded bear.
Through the chaos, both familieslearn a little about each other and
themselves making for a hilarious andheartwarming getaway the great outdoors.

Jared (23:37):
What a great summary.

Katie-1 (23:39):
Now, I did notice that Dan Aykroyd was the first, build

Jared (23:45):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (23:46):
John Candy.
I don't think I realized that.

Jared (23:48):
Yes, he Was

Katie-1 (23:49):
Was he a bigger
At the time?
Maybe?

Jared (23:52):
Well, possibly.
I would say Candy and Arodwere on very equal footing.
As far as, comedic stars, I thinkprobably, Arod, had a great success with
Ghostbusters, but, it'd been years sinceGhostbusters had come out at that point.
But
maybe
he just had a better agentand negotiated top billing.

(24:13):
So, and by all accounts, John Candywas a very sweet man who probably
wasn't gonna fight anybody on it.

Katie-1 (24:21):
just gonna say the same.

Jared (24:23):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (24:24):
it's funny 'cause we're
just coming off of Uncle Buck, like

Jared (24:27):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (24:27):
was Uncle Buck

Jared (24:28):
Classic Love Uncle Buck.

Katie-1 (24:30):
and it was 89, this is 88.
And

Jared (24:32):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (24:33):
was just, it was wild for me to watch the Great Outdoors where
he's playing like literally theopposite character from Uncle Buck

Jared (24:41):
Yeah, he's, he's the, the, the, the family man and who wants to make
his vacation per, it's odd too thatthis, this movie is very, it's very like
National Lampoon's vacation adjacent.
It almost could be aClark Griswold adventure
almost.
It,

Katie-1 (25:01):
point.
It's

Jared (25:02):
it's,

Katie-1 (25:02):
mixed with What about Bob,

Jared (25:04):
yeah.
Yeah.
Like where you have the, the, theuninvited person that you don't want
there who comes crashing your vacation.
But I got to thinking about that.
I was watching it last night.
I was like, John Hughes, a yearlater we'd do another vacation movie
with Christmas vacation and maybe,he just, maybe John Hughes just

(25:24):
liked misadventures on vacation.
And
this was,

Katie-1 (25:29):
Well,

Jared (25:30):
was another adventure.

Katie-1 (25:32):
There was a lot.
Yeah.
'cause all the Lampoons movies, this,

Jared (25:36):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (25:37):
Uncle Buck
is, it's not really vacation, but mishaps.
It's either that or teen movies.
It's like one or the other,

Jared (25:43):
Yes.
And, and this is this movie, actually, I think it has a
little of both of those flavors

Katie-1 (25:50):
Good

Jared (25:50):
because you cut away to the Teen Romance a lot, which when I was a kid,
I always thought kind of slowed thingsdown and watching it again, I was like,
eh, it still kind of slows things down.

Katie-1 (26:05):
It kind.
you're you're right.
It, know, and it's interesting becauseI noticed so we'll get into the cast
a little bit, but, so there's JohnCandy's family has, it's two boys, right?

Jared (26:15):
Yes.

Katie-1 (26:16):
And one of them's name's Buck

Jared (26:18):
Buck and Benny.
Was it
be Benny?
Yeah.

Katie-1 (26:23):
yeah, yeah, you're right.
B Buck and Benny Ripley

Jared (26:27):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (26:27):
is the one that has, they're in
this this like vacation town, this like

Jared (26:31):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (26:32):
type of town.
And so
there's a townie that he,know, kind of falls for.
the only, I think I did have tensionwhen he keeps looking at his watch.
He's supposed to meet Cammy

Jared (26:43):
Yes.

Katie-1 (26:43):
or something,
And
he, they're still

Jared (26:46):
he,

Katie-1 (26:47):
for
John Candy to eat this gigantic steak.
And it's like, He's like, oh myGod, I'm gonna be late meeting
Camie and she's gonna be mad.
And I'm like,
if only he,
had a phone to text

Jared (26:56):
yeah.
Oh

Katie-1 (26:58):
It would

Jared (26:58):
man.

Katie-1 (26:59):
you

Jared (26:59):
phones would, cell phones would ruin 90% of the movies that
came out in the eighties these days.

Katie-1 (27:07):
Indeed.

Jared (27:08):
Like you would just get around every particular e,
every conceivable plot point.
You could, if you had acell phone in those movies.

Katie-1 (27:16):
you could have just texted that person

Jared (27:18):
Sure.
Hey, yeah.
My dad's eating this giant steak.
I, I, I can't get outta here.
So, but yeah, no, no.
Cell phones.
He's going to pay phonesthroughout the film,

Katie-1 (27:29):
and he has to

Jared (27:29):
He,

Katie-1 (27:29):
up at her job And be

Jared (27:31):
yes.

Katie-1 (27:32):
And go find her
in the wild.

Jared (27:34):
You know what's funny about Cammie is that as a teenager I always got sort
of flipped her and Tia from Uncle Buck.
Like I would always transpose the two.
Is that the same girl?
Yeah, yeah.
Very, very similar.

Katie-1 (27:49):
Good
Yeah.
They look very much similar.

Jared (27:51):
yes.
Yeah, they do.

Katie-1 (27:53):
Maybe

Jared (27:54):
And

Katie-1 (27:54):
maybe that's his deal.
I don't know.
Or not John Candy.
John

Jared (27:57):
John Hughes.
Yeah.
And even when I sat down to watchthis last night, I was like, I.
Was this the same girl from Uncle Buck?
Wait.
And then, pulling up IMDB immediately, and you're like, oh, okay.
Well she looks a little different.
I mean, but they are very similar looking.

Katie-1 (28:12):
they are.
Well, let's see.
Lucy Deacons is the, the, the woman who,

Jared (28:18):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (28:19):
at the time who played Camie.
She was the local girland the a and w waitress.
what I found very interesting isthat she is not an actress anymore,

Jared (28:29):
I saw this.

Katie-1 (28:30):
she, she was most known, aside from this movie, she starred
as Millie in the Boy Who Could Fly.

Jared (28:38):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (28:38):
And she
originated the role of LilyWalsh on As the World Turns.
I've never seen that show, but

Jared (28:44):
Wow.

Katie-1 (28:45):
have.
But she
is now an attorney

Jared (28:48):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (28:49):
Denver.

Jared (28:50):
Holy cow,

Katie-1 (28:51):
It says,
Partner in the Denver law firm, duning, deacons, and Gura.

Jared (28:57):
man.

Katie-1 (28:57):
Maybe I

Jared (28:58):
you should have,

Katie-1 (28:58):
her at the

Jared (28:59):
you should have, you should have gone and grabbed her and said, Hey,

Katie-1 (29:02):
Can you?

Jared (29:02):
we're doing a great outdoors podcast.
So that's amazing.

Katie-1 (29:08):
Yeah.
So that's, that's Lucy Deacons as Cammie.
She was very cute.
I liked

Jared (29:13):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (29:13):
liked her character.

Jared (29:15):
Yeah.
And I, she was, when I was a kid, I, Iwas 13 when this came out and I saw it
in the theater, so, that the, the buck,he was a little older than me, but I
did, even though I thought the romancekind of slowed things down, I, I, I, I
related to him a little bit because, I was13 and, I was, I liked girls a lot and,

Katie-1 (29:40):
Did

Jared (29:40):
um, Yeah.
And and I, so I was, I would see himand be like, I would think, I remember
thinking man, I wonder if I could, I.
Talk to a girl like that if we wereon vacation somewhere, and, and I was
so, I was kind of pulling for him.
But anyway, I, I don't know wherethe heck I was going with that, but

Katie-1 (29:59):
Well, it's

Jared (29:59):
you know, I,

Katie-1 (30:00):
like you're on vacation

Jared (30:02):
yeah,

Katie-1 (30:02):
your family, and he's he
didn't want

Jared (30:04):
yeah,

Katie-1 (30:04):
of embarrassing, when

Jared (30:05):
sure.
Exactly.
And you, I, I felt, I, I could relateto Buck in that moment where John Candy
were, where Chet's trying to hug his son.

Katie-1 (30:18):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (30:18):
And now I relate to that as a father, because, my daughter's
like, dad, don't be dumb.
Don't be gross.
I was like, I just wanna give you a hug.
What's the problem?

Katie-1 (30:28):
you're

Jared (30:28):
And

Katie-1 (30:28):
old for a hug.

Jared (30:30):
no.
Exactly.
And so it's funny how.
The movies that you grow up with, they, they sort of change as the years go on
and you start to relate to other people.
Like watching that movie lastnight, I mean, John Candy's
probably was probably younger thanI am now when he made that movie

Katie-1 (30:48):
A hundred

Jared (30:49):
and.

Katie-1 (30:49):
was probably in his thirties.

Jared (30:50):
Yeah.
And I'm watching that going, I canrelate to this wanting my daughter
to enjoy herself or, that goofy sceneat the beginning when he's trying
to fool around with his wife andhe's like, Hey, the kids are gone.
What?
We got the house to ourself.
Come on.
What are you doing?
These are all things you thinkabout sometimes when you,

(31:11):
you got kids running around.
But it's, it's just funny how I start, especially having not watched it in
so long how I was like, holy crap.
I, I'm, I think I'm Chet Ripley right now.
I'm, I'm more Chet thananybody else in this movie.
So that's just one of those crazy things.

Katie-1 (31:31):
It is.
Chet Chet's, John Candy, Chet

Jared (31:35):
yes,

Katie-1 (31:36):
Candy.
Dan Akroyd plays
Roman Craig, his brother-in-law.

Jared (31:39):
yes.
And.

Katie-1 (31:40):
about, oh, go
ahead.

Jared (31:41):
No, I'm sorry.
I just, and I, I kept forgettingthat, John Candy's wife and
Annette Benning are sisters.

Katie-1 (31:48):
That's how they're Yeah.
good

Jared (31:49):
Yeah.
And because the whole, I mean, even lastnight watching, I was like, wait a second.
What, how, what is their relationship?
How are they, oh and, but theydon't really go much into that.

Katie-1 (32:00):
they

Jared (32:00):
they, they share a, they share a few scenes where it's like, okay, well
they're, they're talking sister stuff.
But for the most part, the, thefocus is on John Candy and Dan Roy.

Katie-1 (32:11):
Yeah.
I even.
Similar to you, Jared, when I was watching it.
'cause there was a scene where John Candyis explaining, why he picked going to this
particular Lake, lake resort in Wisconsin,I think is where they are supposed to be.
And he's
like, oh, I came here with my dad and I,at first I said, why is he saying my dad?
Because I thought they were brothers or so

Jared (32:32):
You thought that that

Katie-1 (32:33):
And

Jared (32:33):
and Kandy were brothers?
Yeah.

Katie-1 (32:35):
no, no.
That's why he's saying my dad,

Jared (32:38):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (32:39):
their, it's
their spouses are related.

Jared (32:42):
Yes.
Correct.

Katie-1 (32:44):
So we
were talking about Buck.
He he's played by Chris Young.

Jared (32:51):
What's Chris Young up to these days?
Well, wow.

Katie-1 (32:54):
nothing past
1998, apparently he didlook kind of familiar to me.
He was in several, apparentlyMax Hedge room episodes.

Jared (33:03):
Okay.

Katie-1 (33:03):
And a 1990
TV show called Married People.
But his he must just bea regular, regular dude.
Maybe he's

Jared (33:12):
Yeah,

Katie-1 (33:13):
maybe he's hanging out with Lucy Deacons

Jared (33:15):
he, he may be there in Denver.
You never know.
He, he might still befollowing her around.

Katie-1 (33:19):
it's highly likely, I think.
Yeah.
So that
is the older brother.

Jared (33:25):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (33:26):
So John
Candy, Chet Ripley, he's married toConnie, played by Stephanie Pharisee,

Jared (33:32):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (33:33):
a lot of episodic TV shows.

Jared (33:36):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (33:37):
the other movies she
was in were sideways in Temple Grandin.
She has a familiar face,but I, I didn't, I was

Jared (33:44):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (33:44):
like, oh, she's in blah, blah, blah.

Jared (33:46):
I think she's, this movie's the only thing I've seen her in.

Katie-1 (33:50):
Okay.
And then we have the beautiful AnnetteBenning playing, Roman's wife, Kate Craig,

Jared (33:57):
Yes,

Katie-1 (33:57):
know who Annette Benning
is.

Jared (33:59):
of course.
Yeah.
That was, this was a kind ofan early role for her, I think.

Katie-1 (34:04):
A good point.

Jared (34:05):
this was before she was Annette Benning.

Katie-1 (34:08):
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's funny 'cause I.
really

Jared (34:12):
I.

Katie-1 (34:13):
like she really is beautiful and for,
it, I think when she goes on later tohave shorter hair, it throws me off

Jared (34:19):
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.

Katie-1 (34:20):
I feel like
she's been around longer than
she has been.
Maybe, I don't

Jared (34:23):
Yeah.
Also very Annette Benning's characterat times reminds me a lot of Marcy
from Uncle Buck.

Katie-1 (34:32):
Lori Metcalf's

Jared (34:33):
Yes, yes, yes.

Katie-1 (34:34):
really?

Jared (34:35):
she, she does, I mean, she's not as kinda weird as.
As Marcy is, but I don't know it.
There's a similar thing.
They both, have dressed nicely in niceclothes and everything and that's just
something that comes up because, thisis, it's, it's almost like you've got
the, the, this, this candy series ofyears from plane trains and automobiles

(34:59):
to this, to Uncle Buck to home alone.
It's, it's, it followsthis, this trajectory.
And sometimes I transposecharacters from these movies.

Katie-1 (35:09):
that totally makes sense.
Yeah.
And I can see that like
rich lady clothes, she, theyall have matching Louis Vuitton

Jared (35:16):
Yes,

Katie-1 (35:18):
when they
show up in the Mercedes.

Jared (35:21):
yes,

Katie-1 (35:21):
like clearly.
And then it's like
rich people food.

Jared (35:25):
Yeah.
With the lobster tailsinstead of the hot dogs and.

Katie-1 (35:28):
and.
goat cheese pizza.
That

Jared (35:30):
Yeah.
He goes,

Katie-1 (35:30):
been like

Jared (35:31):
he was, and he asked, he's like, what?
What?
What did you say?
He, she goes, oh, we're just having pizza.
It's pizza.
No, you said something else.
Is it goat pizza?
What is this?
So that was, that's always fun.

Katie-1 (35:44):
it.
But don't you remember thatbeing like on fancy menus, like
a goat cheese in things like

Jared (35:50):
You're like goat.

Katie-1 (35:51):
food from the

Jared (35:52):
Yeah, goat cheese.
Man, that in gray.
Poupon, come on.

Katie-1 (35:57):
Yes.
Yes.
Okay.
So there's two sonsthat the Ripley's have,

Jared (36:03):
Yes.

Katie-1 (36:04):
one.
Benny
is he played Zach GirlsJust Wanna Have Fun.
And then he was in a lot of one-offepisodes of pop, like popular TV shows,
but just like a one-off character.

Jared (36:16):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (36:16):
his name is Ian
Gidi.

Jared (36:18):
Yeah.
He's kind of a hottie now.

Katie-1 (36:21):
Is he?
Ooh,

Jared (36:22):
I saw,

Katie-1 (36:22):
it

Jared (36:22):
I saw him on IMDB and I was like, well, this is, this
guy's kind of handsome looking.
And then, and then I,then I saw who it was.
I was like, holy crap.
That's the little brother

Katie-1 (36:32):
Let me see.

Jared (36:34):
on IMDB.
His picture is, he looks pretty nice.
I, he looks like, I dunno.

Katie-1 (36:41):
You

Jared (36:41):
like a male model.
He's like a male model looking guy.

Katie-1 (36:44):
You know what it is?
It's, I think he must be Italian.
And I have a

Jared (36:49):
Okay.
Oh, there you go.

Katie-1 (36:51):
he's

Jared (36:51):
That, yeah, he's definitely Italian.

Katie-1 (36:54):
dark.
Yeah, you're right.
I'm gonna have to find him in some stuff.

Jared (36:58):
Maybe he's in Denver too.
Hey

Katie-1 (37:01):
maybe.
And then the, then the,
Spooky redheaded

Jared (37:07):
Oh, the, the twins.

Katie-1 (37:09):
of Roman and,
and Kate.
Her

Jared (37:13):
Yeah,

Katie-1 (37:13):
and Kate.

Jared (37:15):
they are.
They, they go out of theirway to make them really weird.

Katie-1 (37:21):
They per, they do, they do because like in and of themselves,

Jared (37:24):
I mean, they're, they're like cute.
They're like cute kids, but, butthey, they, the way they act and
the way, everybody reacts to them.
It's like, oh, theselittle kids are strange.
And chet's like freaked out by 'em.
And, the, the two sons don't reallylike their cousins very much.
They're just like

Katie-1 (37:41):
their own father is weirded

Jared (37:42):
yeah, yeah.
He does it.
That's, that's part of the, his, hisarc in the movie is that, he's, he's
always, he's an absentee father.
He doesn't really get involved with them.
So it's, it's, it'sreally strange, I think.
Are they, are they still
acting?

Katie-1 (38:00):
No,

Jared (38:01):
No.

Katie-1 (38:01):
did one other thing.
So they are identical twins.

Jared (38:04):
Yes.

Katie-1 (38:05):
and Rebecca
Gordon play Kara and Mara,or is it Cara and Mara Craig?
Either way,

Jared (38:11):
Okay.

Katie-1 (38:12):
do you

Jared (38:13):
Same, difference.

Katie-1 (38:14):
Well, I, I, because I feel like in one instance he said Cara,
and in another instance he said, Kara,

Jared (38:19):
Well,

Katie-1 (38:20):
not sure.

Jared (38:21):
they, he probably did, and they're just like, well, you know

Katie-1 (38:24):
They

Jared (38:25):
who, who knows?

Katie-1 (38:26):
the, the mosquito coast

Jared (38:29):
That's right.

Katie-1 (38:30):
19, 86, which I have
no idea what that is,

Jared (38:32):
That's a Harris.
It's a Harrison Ford movie.

Katie-1 (38:36):
Oh,

Jared (38:36):
mosquito coast.
It has Harrison Fordand River Phoenix in it.

Katie-1 (38:40):
really?
How have

Jared (38:41):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (38:41):
that?

Jared (38:42):
No, it's it's a pretty good movie.
Check it out sometime.

Katie-1 (38:47):
We have Wally and Juanita, they're the co-owners of Wally and
Juanita's Perks Pine Lodge Resort.

Jared (38:53):
Yeah.
Funny, funny characters.

Katie-1 (38:56):
they are
super funny So Robert Prosky playsWally and did you ever watch the show?
Veronica's Closet With Kirsty Alley?

Jared (39:05):
No, but I, but

Katie-1 (39:07):
aware of it?

Jared (39:08):
I, yes, and I have seen that actor in a ton of things.

Katie-1 (39:13):
I don't remember who actually now I can, I think I can.
He, so he played a charactercalled Pat on Veronica's closet.

Jared (39:19):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (39:19):
judge in the
94 version of miracle on 34th Street.
He was in

Jared (39:24):
Okay.
Yes.

Katie-1 (39:26):
Sergeant Jablonski on Hill Street Blues, which I've not seen that

Jared (39:30):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (39:31):
but that must
be, have been a regular on that show.

Jared (39:35):
Yeah, he, he's, he's had a, he had a career that went back decades.
He was in, you'll, he even pops up.
I mean, he's, he's in a lot of thoseold, like black and white TV shows
from, like the sixties and stuff.
So yeah,

Katie-1 (39:50):
All

Jared (39:51):
just one of those faces, those character actors
who pops up in everywhere.

Katie-1 (39:56):
I

Jared (39:57):
So,

Katie-1 (39:57):
Uh, Is played by Zoe Ann Zoan, Zan, ZOA.
UNNE, Leroy or Leroy?
I'm making it French.
I don't

Jared (40:13):
Okay.

Katie-1 (40:14):
That's quite a name.
I apologize.
Ms.
Leroy, she's

Jared (40:18):
I,

Katie-1 (40:18):
known.

Jared (40:19):
yeah, I don't, I didn't really recognize her from anything.

Katie-1 (40:22):
She seems to play a waitress or a nurse in like random tv.
Like one,
not just like an episode here and there

Jared (40:29):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (40:29):
TV show.
And it's seemingly likea waitress or a nurse

Jared (40:33):
Okay.

Katie-1 (40:34):
So that's her.

Jared (40:35):
Gotcha.

Katie-1 (40:36):
about Lucy Deacons in
Denver, and then there wasthe the waitress with the 96

Jared (40:42):
Oh, the, the old 96 er?

Katie-1 (40:44):
er?

Jared (40:45):
Yep.

Katie-1 (40:45):
The waitress at that lodge is Nancy Lenahan,

Jared (40:49):
Okay.

Katie-1 (40:50):
she's very familiar.
Did,
didn't you think she was recognizable?
Did you recognize her from anything?

Jared (40:56):
Nothing, immediately jumped out at her, at me.
But I, I don't know.
She's probably been in otherthings I've seen, I'm sure.

Katie-1 (41:03):
She is kind of one of those character actresses.
She's been in a lot of tv.
She was most recently inbless this Mess TV show,

Jared (41:11):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (41:13):
My name

Jared (41:13):
Okay.
Oh wow.

Katie-1 (41:15):
Earth Grace Under Fire.
So she was, had pretty decentsized parts in all of those shows.

Jared (41:22):
Gotcha.

Katie-1 (41:22):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (41:24):
Wow.

Katie-1 (41:24):
Thomas Newman.

Jared (41:27):
Thomas Newman.
It was, I think it wasappropriate for what.
Where it was used, I know they used a lotof like songs and stuff in this movie.
But the score was, the scoresort of reacted to the sort of
the goofiness that was going on.
I think it would, I think it didwhat was required of it, but I, I,

(41:48):
I wouldn't say it's a classic filmscore by any stretch, but, it was
it, it was fine.

Katie-1 (41:54):
I, I think I, agree.
Like I I definitely, you, youall know who Thomas Newman is.

Jared (42:00):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (42:01):
scored like the Green Mile American Beauty Cinderella, man.

Jared (42:06):
Yeah,

Katie-1 (42:06):
Shawshank Redemption

Jared (42:08):
yeah,

Katie-1 (42:09):
and Finding Nemo and then the Great Outdoors.

Jared (42:12):
Yeah, Crazy.

Katie-1 (42:13):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (42:14):
One of the Newman Brothers, David Newman is also a composer

Katie-1 (42:18):
Oh, what did

Jared (42:21):
they're,

Katie-1 (42:21):
is he known for?

Jared (42:22):
David Newman.
Oh, goodness.

Katie-1 (42:24):
that's okay.
I

Jared (42:25):
I would have to look it up, but they, they, they are brothers
and they are quite, quite prolific.

Katie-1 (42:31):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (42:32):
and still, still composing film scores as far as I'm, I'm aware.

Katie-1 (42:36):
Oh, good.

Jared (42:37):
So,

Katie-1 (42:38):
glad that they're alive and
well,

Jared (42:40):
yeah.
Yeah, they are.

Katie-1 (42:41):
Very good.
$24 million to make

Jared (42:46):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (42:46):
and it grossed.
43.5
million, which I'm not sure.
So I was reading that it, thiswas the 25th biggest film at the
American Box office for that year,

Jared (43:03):
Okay.
That,

Katie-1 (43:06):
doesn't seem to

Jared (43:08):
That,

Katie-1 (43:08):
43 0.5
million.
that,
doesn't seem to go, does

Jared (43:12):
that's, that's not, that's not a huge
That's,
not a huge take.

Katie-1 (43:16):
that's

Jared (43:16):
It didn't even double its money.

Katie-1 (43:18):
that's what I, thought, so

Jared (43:20):
I I

Katie-1 (43:20):
don't

Jared (43:20):
do know that this film is one of those films that took off on VHS,
like once it hit, once it hit the videorental stores, people discovered it.
And I think it's because of the videostores that this, this movie has
become some somewhat beloved by people.

Katie-1 (43:39):
You're absolutely right.
It was panned by critics,

Jared (43:42):
Yes, of course.

Katie-1 (43:43):
but you're, you're
right.
Over, over the years,it's become more beloved.
Yeah.
All

Jared (43:48):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (43:49):
You had mentioned some of your history with this, that you,
you speak in the great outdoors,

Jared (43:54):
yes,

Katie-1 (43:55):
Versus,
How was it revisiting it yesterday?

Jared (43:58):
it was fantastic.
I, the.
I was, I was laughing at,out loud at parts of it.
And, and parts that I didn't reallynecessarily remember and aren't burned
into my brain, but just like some ofthe stuff Aykroyd was doing, like when,
when he, he's telling the bear storyand, and, and then he he goes, oh,

(44:19):
Jesus Christ, I'm 20 pounds overweight.
You trying, he goes, I'm half drunk here.
Whatcha are trying to do, kill me?
It's just I can hear like maybeone of my uncles saying that, it,
it's just, I, I don't know whythat, that made me laugh so much.
But a lot of the stuff Aykroyd wasdoing, I thought was really funny.

(44:41):
And, and then too, John Candy, justlike when he's, he's just exhausted.
Like when he, his, he, the horse runsaway from him and he's trudging through
the woods and he comes, he's all redand sweaty and he's just like, Hey, hey.
Yeah, I, I don't know.
That stuff was just cracking me up.

(45:03):
And then of course it's, the,the greatest hits, the stuff
that lives in my head always.
It was fun to, to see that.
And I was like watching him eatthat steak and I'm like, well,
he's, he's trying to do it in smallbites, the bites were really small.
And I was like, well, that'sprobably the, the smart way.
If you're gonna try to do somethinglike that, that's probably the
way you should try to do it.

(45:26):
But he.

Katie-1 (45:26):
Eating an elephant.
One small bite at a time.

Jared (45:28):
exactly.
Just a little bit.

Katie-1 (45:30):
Yeah.

Jared (45:31):
And then I, I had a good time and I actually, I put it back on this morning
as I was just sort of walking arounddoing stuff around the house and I don't
know, it was, it was com It's comfortable.
It was like, it was like puttingan old comfortable jacket on 'cause
it's like so much stuff I remembered.
But like I said, those bits that weresticking out to me that did not before,

(45:51):
just reacting to it as a, as now asan adult with, with a kit of my own
and, and sort of seeing it throughthat lens now it was interesting.
For me, it, it, it holds up.
I mean, it's, it'sdefinitely, it's eighties.
And like I said, the I think that the,the teenage story sometimes bogs it

(46:12):
down a little bit, 'cause I, I wasthinking last night I was like, okay,
let's get back to Candy and Aykroyd.
But very slapstick and goofy, especially the stuff with the bear,

Katie-1 (46:22):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (46:23):
Towards the end.
But for the most part I was like, yeah, I, I still really enjoy this.
There was things in it that Iwas wondering about they, they,
they call it the bear dumpwhere they just go watch Bears
rifle through garbage.

Katie-1 (46:38):
I forgot about that.
That's.

Jared (46:41):
I was like, I was like, is this a thing?
Is this a real thing that people do?
And I couldn't help but,but wonder eh, do people.
Do this at like campsites, likethey just go to where the trash is
and watch the Bears root through it

Katie-1 (46:55):
There were several instances where it's unrealistic in so many ways.
Like when the bear breaks the doordown and is on top of John Candy,

Jared (47:03):
keeps pushing him.

Katie-1 (47:04):
I'm like,
that would kill him.
Like

Jared (47:06):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (47:07):
right?

Jared (47:08):
like there was a stunt man under there.

Katie-1 (47:10):
I don't

Jared (47:10):
so I
How did they pull that off?

Katie-1 (47:14):
of the bear, it's Bart the Bear.

Jared (47:16):
It is, that's your legends of the Fall bear.

Katie-1 (47:18):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (47:19):
I thought of that because I listened to your and, and Ryan's show
that you did about Legends of the Fall,

Katie-1 (47:26):
on his

Jared (47:26):
z flicks.

Katie-1 (47:28):
Zw

Jared (47:28):
ZZ flicks.

Katie-1 (47:30):
So

Jared (47:30):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (47:30):
guys.

Jared (47:31):
So, I, I was gonna bring that up because that is the
bear from Legends of the Fall.

Katie-1 (47:37):
He was like a, the bear of my childhood.
Bart was in a lot of things.

Jared (47:41):
Yeah,

Katie-1 (47:42):
him being in various movies.
I don't know, Bart The Bear was like a big

Jared (47:46):
well, I guess if you need a trained grizzly bear,
I mean, that's a pretty niche.
You just, you go to those peoplelike, Hey I need a grizzly bear
for this film, and I don't want todie trying to film with a wild one.
So what's Bart doing?

Katie-1 (48:03):
Well, yes.
Okay.
So the, so I don't know where I wasgoing with that other than there are
a lot of things with this that aren'tactually realistic in, and I don't
know how things were in the eighties, but nowadays would be clear signs.
Do not feed the wildlifedon't leave trash out.
Like

Jared (48:20):
Yes,

Katie-1 (48:21):
your, the bear will rip your
car door off to get food inside.

Jared (48:24):
Yes.

Katie-1 (48:25):
not interact
with the bears in any way.

Jared (48:28):
Yes.
And yet they, they people go to a fieldto watch Bears ri rifle through garbage.
And
John Candy's throwing candy bars at 'em.

Katie-1 (48:38):
Come here, bear.

Jared (48:39):
He goes, what do we got?
We got a zag nut here.
It's just,

Katie-1 (48:44):
Oh man,

Jared (48:45):
It's ridiculous.

Katie-1 (48:46):
it is.

Jared (48:47):
And one thing I wondered about Bart, they obviously had to
put like that makeup appliance on hisforehead because he's, he's bald, like
right above his eyes and his nose.

Katie-1 (49:00):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (49:00):
And that's what I was looking at going, man, how the
heck did, did they get that on him?
And, and how does it stay on him?
What, what do they do?
I mean, he's not they're notsetting Bart in a makeup chair and
saying, okay, let's just put thisappliance on your forehead, buddy.
Let's see how this works.

Katie-1 (49:21):
Well,

Jared (49:21):
Um.

Katie-1 (49:22):
Exceptionally well trained.
He maybe

Jared (49:24):
I guess I would not, I would not wanna be putting
makeup appliances on Bart's head

Katie-1 (49:30):
Or on his backside.
I

Jared (49:32):
on his butt.
His,

Katie-1 (49:33):
you messing with their
backsides,

Jared (49:35):
that's true.

Katie-1 (49:35):
Very, even a
dog might bite you, you

Jared (49:38):
Oh yeah, exactly.
And he had a, that big old giant bare ass

Katie-1 (49:42):
mm-hmm.

Jared (49:43):
bear, his bear's bear ass, that big old butt.
When he got shot again by
John Candy,

Katie-1 (49:52):
With

Jared (49:52):
but

Katie-1 (49:52):
birdshot, buckshot, I don't know,

Jared (49:54):
with, with a, it was a lamp.
He picked up the lamp because rememberthe, the lamp was the shotgun and, and
apparently it was loaded, of course,

Katie-1 (50:04):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (50:05):
even though it was a functioning lamp.

Katie-1 (50:07):
the, the owner, the co-owner of this, this little resort.

Jared (50:12):
Yes.

Katie-1 (50:12):
oh, and their dog too had porcupine needles

Jared (50:17):
needles all in its face.
Yes.

Katie-1 (50:19):
about.
quirky and they're like, oh, have youever given your dog a bath before?
Like they

Jared (50:25):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (50:25):
in the

Jared (50:26):
They're like, they're like, Hey, she loves porcupines but
hates humans and she's in heat.
Too bad you're not a dog.
That's what that reminds me ofwhen he goes up to the to the
counter and that there's that horn.
It says, blow me for service.
And it's like,

Katie-1 (50:43):
that.

Jared (50:44):
goes, he's like, eh, blow me for service.
Oh, that's interesting.
The whole thing about, puttingyour mouth on this horn
that's hanging there, it just,

Katie-1 (50:53):
have.

Jared (50:54):
sure.
It's like, Hey, who cares?
Yeah.
Let's do this.
And then he he gives it agood old he bellows into it
and, disturbs the whole place.
But I, I thought that was funny.

Katie-1 (51:05):
One of my favorite parts actually was the opening scene.
It was so like classic eighties, like thecontrasting drives to this, this cabin

Jared (51:16):
Yeah,

Katie-1 (51:16):
of the families.
Even the music was contrasting.
I, I, I quite liked that.

Jared (51:22):
whether um,

Katie-1 (51:23):
favorite parts
actually.

Jared (51:25):
singing YY Yak, when, which is sort of goes to, you go a year later
and Chevy Chase is, they're singingChristmas carols as they're driving.
And

Katie-1 (51:37):
And the

Jared (51:37):
that's

Katie-1 (51:38):
wagoner, it was very reminiscent of

Jared (51:39):
yes.

Katie-1 (51:40):
the wood grain station wagon in

Jared (51:43):
E Exactly, yes.
And at some points in the movie, youalmost could literally swap out Chet
with Clark Griswold, it seems like.
But I, I do remember that, I, I watchedthis on VHS for years with my parents.
'cause my mom loves John Candy and, every time she would watch this scene,

(52:05):
she'd be like, oh, that's your dad.
'cause my dad would like to singand stuff when he was driving and,
try to get the, everybody involved.
And everybody's just sort of like, okay.
Although in this movie, the kidswere, everybody seemed to be
having a good time when they'resinging along with, with the song.
But that's, that's a memory Ihave is that, my mom would just

(52:26):
always laugh uncontrollably at,John Candy doing this stuff.

Katie-1 (52:30):
Aw,

Jared (52:31):
And, and to this date, my dad still sometimes will go
Big bear, big bear, big bear.
Like at the end when he's allout of breath and he is trying
to explain what was going on.
Sometimes my dad willjust do that randomly.

Katie-1 (52:46):
your whole

Jared (52:46):
Uh,

Katie-1 (52:47):
Has the great outdoors.
You speak

Jared (52:48):
yes,

Katie-1 (52:49):
outdoors.

Jared (52:50):
yes, exactly.
That's, that's just, it's oneof those just through lines
through my family, I guess.
Everybody likes the great outdoors.

Katie-1 (52:58):
That was another scene where if only they had a phone that would've
eliminated the need for the scene whenthe girls, the weird redheaded girls get

Jared (53:09):
Yes.

Katie-1 (53:09):
a, in a

Jared (53:10):
And mine.

Katie-1 (53:11):
And
John Candy goes to get help whileRoman be finally steps up to the plate

Jared (53:18):
yeah, he's the hero.

Katie-1 (53:20):
But then he's like, oh, okay, we're just gonna go back to the cabin.
But he doesn't, John Candydoesn't know that, and

Jared (53:25):
Exactly.
He's out getting the ropes and stuff and

Katie-1 (53:29):
bear's down there.
So

Jared (53:30):
he goes,

Katie-1 (53:31):
only Roman could have texted him and be
like, I got him.
We're headed back.

Jared (53:35):
yeah, exactly.
Again, you wouldn't havea movie at that point.
But yeah, that was that was funny.
And how, I'm not sure that an abandonedmine shaft full of dynamite would be just
sort of so accessible, like with, withthe, the crappy little three pieces of
wood they had over the covering of it.

Katie-1 (53:56):
enter.

Jared (53:57):
Yeah.
Do not enter.
Oh gosh.

Katie-1 (54:00):
how did

Jared (54:00):
And then,

Katie-1 (54:00):
down there and up?

Jared (54:03):
yeah, well the, the bear got up because

Katie-1 (54:06):
The

Jared (54:06):
Chet pulled him up and because he's oh.
He goes, Jesus, Roman, can you help me out here?

Katie-1 (54:11):
I watched this two weeks ago.
That's why I'm like,oh yeah, that's right.
But how did it, Yeah.
Oh, wild.
Yeah.

Jared (54:16):
But I actually, I did some, some research or I, I googled it, it
while the movie was playing becauseDan Aykroyd was, seemed, he was very
concerned that it was old, wet, dynamite.
And apparently old wet dynamiteis extremely dangerous.

Katie-1 (54:33):
Really,

Jared (54:34):
Yes.
That,

Katie-1 (54:35):
that.
What dynamite

Jared (54:37):
yeah.
And, and it was even like the, themovie was scientifically accurate
because if you noticed on the dynamiteboxes, a lot of 'em had these crystals.
It looked like salt onthe outside of them.
And that's where the dynamitesweats and that's nitroglycerin

Katie-1 (54:54):
Oh,

Jared (54:55):
and that's what happens when dynamite gets when, when
dynamite is aged and gets wet.

Katie-1 (55:02):
ah.

Jared (55:03):
It starts to sweat like that.
And it is incrediblyvolatile in that state.
And I would wager to say everything thatDan Aykroyd was doing down there, like
moving around, they, they would've beenblown to pieces just because there was
a lot of old wet dynamite down there.
And apparently you can'teven, you can barely jostle

(55:26):
it and it would just explode.
So,

Katie-1 (55:29):
I mean

Jared (55:29):
but

Katie-1 (55:30):
for the great outdoors with the,
all the

Jared (55:32):
oh yeah,

Katie-1 (55:32):
with the bear, the

Jared (55:34):
Oh, the skis, oh God, that, that's skiing scene is hilarious.
He's I'm gonna die.
I'm gonna die.

Katie-1 (55:42):
No meaning like I I mean, I don't know if they were like, who cares?
Because the stunt personwas a very, clearly a

Jared (55:49):
Not,

Katie-1 (55:49):
skinny

Jared (55:50):
Not, John Candy.

Katie-1 (55:52):
It was so obviously not

Jared (55:54):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (55:54):
the opposite of John Candy.

Jared (55:56):
could you imagine John Candy on those skis today?
Now today's technology, they couldhave made that happen probably.
But yeah, back then it's obviouslya skinny water skier who's in
good shape, maybe wearing acouple of extra layers of clothes.

Katie-1 (56:11):
Like his Ja the jacket

Jared (56:13):
Yeah, they, they try to bulk him up a little bit.
But you know, you look at his legsand it's like that guy, he's in shape.
He knows what he's doing.

Katie-1 (56:21):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (56:21):
junk candy.

Katie-1 (56:22):
And it went on and on, and on and

Jared (56:25):
Yeah.
They just kept going.
But one thing that made me laughout loud last night was he was like,
calling Roman a bastard and theythought he was saying, go faster.

Katie-1 (56:35):
Oh yeah.
Yeah.

Jared (56:36):
He was like, you bastard, you bastard.
And his wife's like, hesays, go faster, faster.
He goes, okay, let's do it.
So I, that made me laugh.
Crazy.

Katie-1 (56:49):
Did you recognize the guy again I don't know what the
purpose of this character was.
The guy who gets hit by lightningmultiple times at the bar, he's like the
stuttering guy with this, the streak.

Jared (57:02):
Yes.

Katie-1 (57:03):
did well, I,
I was like, that, what was thepurpose of him being in this movie,

Jared (57:08):
I don't know.
Maybe to tell him there wasa storm coming, I guess.
'cause you know he's runningthrough the woods and he gets
struck again by lightning.

Katie-1 (57:16):
I Did smile though, because Did you recognize him
another John Hughes movie?

Jared (57:25):
Well, now you've got me thinking.

Katie-1 (57:27):
Immediately when I saw him, I was like, oh my God, it's
Gary's dad from Weird Science.

Jared (57:35):
Holy crap.
It is.
Maybe
it's the pear that
I didn't recognize.

Katie-1 (57:40):
Yeah.

Jared (57:41):
Wow.
There you go.

Katie-1 (57:43):
was just like a,
they wanted to make arole for him to be in this

Jared (57:46):
Sure.
Come on in, be the guy who getsstruck by lightning all the time.

Katie-1 (57:51):
I quite enjoyed the raccoons

Jared (57:53):
Yeah.
With the, the subtitles.
Yeah.
That was actually very clever.

Katie-1 (57:59):
it?
It was, and even I let it run allthe way through to the, there was a
post credit scene with the raccoons.

Jared (58:08):
Oh, no kidding.
I just watched it throughthe dance sequence.
I didn't

Katie-1 (58:12):
there was a raccoon scene at the end, I can't even remember
what it was, but there was a, afinal post credit raccoon scene.

Jared (58:21):
Wow.
And that, that kind of stuff wasabsolutely rare back in those days.
I mean, now they do it all the time, buta post credit scene in 1988 is unheard of.

Katie-1 (58:34):
Yeah, I'm, that's a good point.
I'm trying to think if there were any.
So now because of that, I'm like, well,I better let the credits roll and watch
till the very, very, very end for the

Jared (58:43):
I just, well, in another John Hughes film, Ferris Bueller
had had another scene at the veryend where Ferris walks out and goes,
you're still here?

Katie-1 (58:57):
yeah.

Jared (58:58):
it's over.
The movie's over go home.
And, but with Ferris, there was awhole scene that played throughout
the credits with the, the principalgetting on the bus and it, it, and
that played throughout the whole thing.
So it was, you would've satthere and probably watched it

Katie-1 (59:17):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (59:17):
and not just be watching credit scroll on a screen.
But yeah, maybe that was just a hugething Hey, yeah, we'll just put something
a little extra in here at the end.

Katie-1 (59:26):
for people who stuck around.

Jared (59:27):
Yeah, sure.

Katie-1 (59:28):
appreciated it.

Jared (59:30):
Now I'm gonna go watch it after we're done here to see what was they said?

Katie-1 (59:34):
Well he also, another thing, he uses the same names we

Jared (59:40):
Well,

Katie-1 (59:42):
here,

Jared (59:43):
yeah,

Katie-1 (59:43):
a chat in weird science, buck

Jared (59:47):
Buck.

Katie-1 (59:47):
B and Uncle Buck
what's the story?
John Hughes.
You just

Jared (59:51):
Yeah,

Katie-1 (59:52):
just like chat and Buck.

Jared (59:54):
I guess so.
Or maybe, he just gets into a, getsinto a creative rut and he's like,
okay, well this guy can be buck.
What the heck?
Who cares?

Katie-1 (01:00:03):
I mean unless he, like in real life, unless it's a nod to people
he knows or something in real life,

Jared (01:00:08):
That makes sense to me.
I think maybe, maybe that's, thatthat could be part of it, that he
would just put maybe his buddy's
names into his own moviesas just as a nod maybe.

Katie-1 (01:00:23):
Do you remember when you first watched this movie, did you
track immediately did you predict thatRoman was broke when you were a kid?

Jared (01:00:33):
Well at, at 13, I saw this in the theater, so I didn't, that I wasn't
picking up on that, of course, I, I wasn'treading too much into it, so I didn't
really, see it coming, but watchingit now if I think they drop a couple
of breadcrumbs that you can say, well, something's not adding up with Roman.

(01:01:00):
And so yeah, it's a little more obviousto me now as an adult watching it.
But as a kid, I didn't,
I didn't have any idea.

Katie-1 (01:01:08):
That does make sense.
I just had the, I, because I've onlyseen it as an adult, I saw it coming
a mile away because they did, toyour point, they gave us breadcrumbs.
But,

Jared (01:01:17):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (01:01:18):
yeah, I was,
but I was like, the whole time, I'mlike, how are they gonna resolve it?
How is this gonna come up?

Jared (01:01:24):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (01:01:25):
that

Jared (01:01:25):
one thing I did forget when, when Dan Aykroyd tells him that story about
how, he was, heard, him overheard him inthe bathroom on his wedding day saying,
that Roman is one crooked son of a bitch.
And I'd forgotten I guess, that he made that up

Katie-1 (01:01:42):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (01:01:43):
because I just assumed, I, I totally forgotten in the movie that
later he fenced to just making that up.
And that didn't happen at all.
But, I think for a long time I justthought, oh yeah, I guess John Candy
just lost his patience completely.
And he could have certainlysaid something like that, but.
Last night, I think was thefirst time I realized that,

(01:02:04):
oh, wait, he didn't say that

Katie-1 (01:02:07):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (01:02:08):
and Aykroyd was being a jerk.

Katie-1 (01:02:10):
like

Jared (01:02:10):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (01:02:11):
in the movie.
Chet is

Jared (01:02:13):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (01:02:14):
a nice, like a good
hearted person that you'relike, that seems odd,

Jared (01:02:18):
Well, he, Chet, he, he can be pushed and, and I think we saw
him at his lowest I want him outtahere, that he is ruining everything.
He's a jerk.
I don't like this.
And it just, I, I think for, for most ofthe time, he handled it remarkably well.
If you just had somebody who youwere like, oh gosh, you know that

(01:02:41):
whatever, friend you have who you'rejust, you need a break from, and then
all of a sudden they're like, Hey.
We're gonna hang out allweek, and you'd be like,
That's great.

Katie-1 (01:02:52):
I would, oh, I would've been so pissed.
'cause it was, they didn'tknow it was an unannounced

Jared (01:02:59):
Yes.
Yeah,

Katie-1 (01:03:01):
had very carefully, picked this place for a week and then it's your like
in-law brother that you don't like anyway.
Yeah,
Oh.

Jared (01:03:10):
sure.

Katie-1 (01:03:10):
to keep your mouth
shut in that

Jared (01:03:12):
Yes, absolutely.
But, he held it together prettywell throughout most of the film.
I mean, when, when he first showsup, videotaping with the giant
camcorder on his shoulder, of

Katie-1 (01:03:25):
They're, they're

Jared (01:03:26):
undressing his, undressing his wife.
It's like, okay, that's thatprobably would've been it for me.
But it's, it's one of those things.
Even back then, seeing it as a kid Icould relate to oh gosh, that would be
the worst if somebody you didn't likeshowed up to just ruin your vacation.

Katie-1 (01:03:45):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (01:03:46):
So, and not to mention the fact that he kept changing everything.
He got a jet boat insteadof the pontoon boat,

Katie-1 (01:03:52):
right.

Jared (01:03:53):
and he, he wanted, and his sons would rather hang out with Uncle Roman
than him and, and all this stuff.
So just a, just a nightmare scenario.

Katie-1 (01:04:07):
They both played their parts very well, and I

Jared (01:04:09):
Y Yes.

Katie-1 (01:04:10):
Benning played.
Yeah.
I, I really think that the, even the kids were all right.

Jared (01:04:16):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (01:04:17):
the adult actors
really, think, played the family dynamics, like just little things I picked up, I
was like, oh, that seems pretty realistic.

Jared (01:04:29):
Yes.
Yes.
I, I thought everybody did a great job andI, I sort of, I liked Aykroyd was, he was
definitely, attempting some certain way ofspeaking, like really yeah, that's right.
He, not that he talks like that, butjust sort of this obnoxious yeah.
Shit that's I gotta go introduce Mr.
Thick Dick to Mr.

(01:04:49):
Urinal cake,
you
know?

Katie-1 (01:04:52):
you that's a pretty good impression.

Jared (01:04:55):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (01:04:55):
What it's, what is it like,
like
shyster, stockbroker

Jared (01:05:00):
Yeah, just sort of like a, a car salesman type of guy, Hey, he's already
gonna talk like this, it's and then JohnCandy is, he's pretty much, I mean, John
Candy has a, he has kind of a baselineand, he, he turns it up a little bit this
way for Uncle Buck when he's, he has tobe completely clueless in a goofball.

(01:05:20):
But then he does have sort of likethe family man, Clark Griswold
persona where he, he's sort of thisput upon person and, and, and he, he
amps and then he goes the, he goesas kind of a different way with it.
Although I think his character inplanes, trains on automobiles is a
little more like buck than, than his, than his character in great outdoors.

Katie-1 (01:05:43):
Definitely.

Jared (01:05:44):
Although his character in planes has more of a sad story than, than, buck
who's sort of a loser by choice and, andhis character in planes is, is he's, he's
really trying to, to be a better guy,
but,

Katie-1 (01:06:01):
but

Jared (01:06:02):
and

Katie-1 (01:06:02):
have a, bit of a lack of self-awareness

Jared (01:06:05):
Oh, a hundred percent.
Yeah.
And, but in this movie, he's sort of,he's, he's very, he's very even keeled.
I think he, he's the straight man

Katie-1 (01:06:15):
is,

Jared (01:06:15):
movie.

Katie-1 (01:06:16):
which I first, I, because I hadn't seen this, and when I was
doing the research for this, I waslike, oh, Dan Aykroyd is playing
the bill Murray, Bob, I guess

Jared (01:06:27):
mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (01:06:28):
why.
'cause I had just seen Uncle
Buck is probably

Jared (01:06:31):
Yeah.

Katie-1 (01:06:31):
and so I was like, oh, Yeah.

Jared (01:06:34):
Yeah.
That's, that's pretty crazy.
And it's all, like I said, sometimesthat's why I interchange characters
and attributes because all these movieshappened within a four year span.
It's like the

Katie-1 (01:06:48):
I, I, yeah, you're right.
And even it's sort of like the
casting is well, just, they'rekind of interchangeable to

Jared (01:06:54):
Yep.

Katie-1 (01:06:55):
I was reading that
both Chevy Chase and Bill Murraywere considered for the part of Roman

Jared (01:07:01):
Yes, yes.
Chevy Chase was shootinganother funny farm,

Katie-1 (01:07:05):
which are very similar movies that came
out two weeks apart in June of

Jared (01:07:10):
that's,

Katie-1 (01:07:11):
Funny Farm and The Great
Outdoors.

Jared (01:07:12):
that's,
wild.
And all with this pool ofactors who, who all sort of
intermingle in other movies too.
So it's, it's easy to, that's why Iget this era confused a lot because
it's, Chevy Chase, Akroyd, billMurray, John Candy, they're, they're
all sort of weaving in and out ofeach other's orbits at this time.

Katie-1 (01:07:34):
They are, they are.
I was also reading that this only,it was a three week production
shoot, seems very small.
Like

Jared (01:07:43):
That's very short.
Goodness gracious.

Katie-1 (01:07:45):
know a lot about movie making,
movie making, but I waskind of surprised by that.

Jared (01:07:49):
Well, they definitely shot a lot of it on a lot of it seems well, I mean the
indoor stuff, I guess that could have beenon that was probably on a stage obviously.
But they were out in this place inCalifornia that they were shooting.

Katie-1 (01:08:03):
Yes.

Jared (01:08:03):
And John Hughes, I always think, john Hughes does confuse
sort of the geography of theplaces that he's, he's shooting.
Because I think to me, the place theyare looks very much like a California
wilderness with, with the mountains andall the, the big trees and everything

(01:08:26):
now in Wisconsin does have mountains, but they're not as pronounced as
what you see in the great outdoors.
And it's the same with the beginningof national Lampoon's vacation.
They're, they're supposedto be in Illinois somewhere.
Illinois has no mountains whatsoever.
It's like all farmland.
And they're, they're driving aroundlooking for the Christmas tree.

(01:08:48):
And these, this, this mountainouswilderness at which they actually shot.
Up,
Around Winter Park in Colorado.
Yes.

Katie-1 (01:08:57):
Okay.

Jared (01:08:58):
there's, John Hughes likes to substitute a lot of these,
these very mountainous areas, buthe wants his people in Chicago to
be able to commute to them easily.
So he, he just, he gives thegeography those attributes,

Katie-1 (01:09:12):
Yeah.
And

Jared (01:09:13):
but

Katie-1 (01:09:13):
I love one of the
parts, think my love for Chicago.
Is rooted in John Hughes from mychildhood, because I, I absolutely
love the city of Chicago, which is
why I think partially, I thought itwas funny that the raccoons were like,
oh, we're gonna be eating good tonight.
The license plate says Illinois, if

Jared (01:09:30):
Yeah,
yeah, yeah.
We got Illinois plates and I, I, me too.
When I was I 20, when I was20 in 95, me and my buddy,
alan, the, the guys I've, I've talkedabout before, and another buddy of mine,
Josh, we we, we went to Chicago and we'regonna do the the Ferris Bueller tour.

(01:09:50):
We just went up there for four daysand we, and we were also big fans of
the Fugitive movie with Harrison Ford.
And, and a lot of that's in Chicago.

Katie-1 (01:09:59):
I haven't seen it in a long

Jared (01:10:00):
So we picked these locations from The Fugitive and Ferris Bueller,
and we walked around, we went toWrigley Field and watched some
Cubs games and just had a blast.
And, that's mostly becauseof Ferris Bueller's Day off.
And, and it's funny that JohnHughes, his movies, and it's funny

(01:10:22):
that these characters in the greatoutdoors, they, you never see them
in Chicago, but they're from Chicago,
And it's.

Katie-1 (01:10:31):
purposefully show us the license plates.

Jared (01:10:33):
Yes.
So I think he, he hasa great affection for,
for the, the city of Chicago thateven if his characters aren't
going to be there, they're gonnabe some connection back to Chicago.

Katie-1 (01:10:46):
It's, it's his trademark.

Jared (01:10:48):
Yeah,

Katie-1 (01:10:49):
Mm-hmm.
you
you pointed out that theyactually shot in California.
The movie setting is

Jared (01:10:56):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (01:10:56):
place

Jared (01:10:57):
Yes,

Katie-1 (01:11:00):
Awa.
It's like really long.
It's,

Jared (01:11:02):
it's, strictly for laughs.
I think

Katie-1 (01:11:05):
But it's shot in bass Lake was where they were in California.
And according to the locals, some saidthat Annette Benning was kind of demanding

Jared (01:11:16):
I read that as well.
I.

Katie-1 (01:11:18):
that Dan Aykroyd was mostly polite but very aloof and kind of
difficult to the actual townspeople.

Jared (01:11:25):
Uhhuh.

Katie-1 (01:11:25):
But big shocker.
John Candy has a reputation forbeing very approachable, friendly

Jared (01:11:31):
Mm-hmm.

Katie-1 (01:11:31):
and gotten along
very well with everyone.
And the townspeople saidhe was a joy to work with.
So that was
good to hear.

Jared (01:11:37):
Yeah.
He, he seems like a, a teddy bear,

Katie-1 (01:11:40):
Mm-hmm.

Jared (01:11:41):
And, and it's good to hear that people would that people
had that experience with him.
'cause that's sort of howyou picture him in your head.
If I ever met John Candy, I wouldhope he would be nice to me.
And it sounds like that's the way he was.

Katie-1 (01:11:55):
Yeah, I'm

Jared (01:11:56):
So that's, that's cool.
Yeah.

Katie-1 (01:11:59):
title, I guess was
Big Country.

Jared (01:12:02):
Big country.

Katie-1 (01:12:04):
What do you

Jared (01:12:04):
I.

Katie-1 (01:12:04):
about that?

Jared (01:12:07):
NI think the Great Outdoors is a much better title.
Of course.
That's what I've livedwith for 30 plus years, so
I
I, like the, the Great Outdoors.

Katie-1 (01:12:16):
I think I agree with you.
Mm-hmm.

Jared (01:12:19):
could, sounds like it could be a Western or something.

Katie-1 (01:12:22):
Yeah.
or like a, something.
about like Music Star or

Jared (01:12:26):
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah.

Katie-1 (01:12:28):
you're right, you're right.

Jared (01:12:31):
I think The Great Outdoors is, is a perfect name for this film.

Katie-1 (01:12:35):
Thanks to Jared for
joining me to reminisce about1988 the Great outdoors.
Do you have any closing thoughtsfor us about this movie and then
tell us where we can find you.

Jared (01:12:48):
Well, thank you Katie for having me today.
It is a pleasure.
I'm on the cusp of my 50th birthdaylooking back on a seminal film for
me thinking back how I was ha veryhappy I get to share these stories of
me and my friend just still quotingthis movie to each other, to this day.

(01:13:12):
And it, it's, it is funny that this, this particular movie and, and not
really any of the others, but this is onethat that has just kind of followed me
around and lived in my head for so long.
And it was, it was a lotof fun to to talk about it.
Loved it.

Katie-1 (01:13:32):
It was fun for
me too.
I can't believe I hadn't seen it.
And my God, the next time we podcasttogether, Jared, I swear to God so
listeners, every time Jared and I do a

Jared (01:13:42):
Yes.

Katie-1 (01:13:43):
I have some
sort of technical issue.
My power went out for backdraft.
My internet went out for this.

Jared (01:13:51):
Yes,

Katie-1 (01:13:52):
There's the

Jared (01:13:52):
And so,

Katie-1 (01:13:54):
we
had stru, we had a
struggle Get even gettinghere today, like it was,

Jared (01:13:58):
yes

Katie-1 (01:13:59):
against us.

Jared (01:13:59):
let, me say that I also completely forgot that we're doing this a week late
because it popped up on my phone lastweek and I was nowhere near my house.
And I was like Katie.
But I'm so happy that wefinally got it together.
We conquered the gremlins thatwe're giving you technical issues,

(01:14:23):
and we got this sucker down.

Katie-1 (01:14:25):
We

Jared (01:14:26):
So who knows what will happen next time.
I mean, good grief,
maybe an earthquake or something.
I couldn't even imagine.

Katie-1 (01:14:34):
there man.
Don't do it.

Jared (01:14:36):
Sorry.
Sorry.
